Foundation. This report reflects how the creative processes through the "Bridging Possibilities" and our Train the Trainer programs, enabling us to expand our reach to enlightened and enriched more youth. These results from 270 young lives and what they experienced together through the "Bridging Possibilities" Character Education program. Demonstrating the power and importance of inspiring and empowering our youth with the essential tools so that they are able to make better life choices, find their gifts and know that they matter! Allowing them to lead a more meaningful productive life and become tomorrow's leaders in Arizona and around the world, for a brighter tomorrow for all.

W

hat: Release the Fear, a non-profit health and human services organization, teaches Arizona’s youth the

life skills needed to combat the effects of Peer Pressure, Gang involvement, Bullying, Abuse, and Violence in our society and to make better life choices. Release the Fear (RTF) has worked with thousands of at-risk youth and adults in Arizona and around the world, offering experiential programs that help reverse the paralyzing effects of fear and diminished self-worth. Our programs encourage youth to explore safe and healthy lifestyles and to overcome disabilities through the development of leadership and social skills through evidence-based curriculum that meets National Common Core standards. H

ow: These programs stimulate whole-brain thinking and develop metacognitive thought processing by utilizing

new applied-knowledge teaching methods. These programs demonstrate options that awaken a creative consciousness and expose the unlimited potential of critical thinking and problem solving to help participants develop better cognitive behavioral skills. Our trained facilitators guide participants through interactive creative activities and analytically explore the connectedness to their lives. Release the Fear utilizes inquiry-based learning experiences, an educational practice where the teacher/facilitator uses controlled questioning to serve as a learning guide in order to move students towards new understandings. Educational research shows that student retention increases when new learning is discovered through inquiry practices, as the student is able to take ownership of these findings. The teacher/facilitator must act as guide while being an expert questioner, thinking of the end objective at all times and posing questions to allow students to reach objectives on their own. When this is done, students are able to create new thought patterns which connect and build on their applied knowledge and personal life goals. Without these essential life skills, the still- maturing minds of detained youth view their future as bleak with no hope for a “normal” life.

A

pproach: Through experiential programs, we encourage participants to develop valuable core life skills, better

critical problem solving, and a healthy sense of understanding of self and others. Through the RTF programs, participants discover that anything is possible, that they have a purpose in life. They see why they do matter to the world, to the community, and most of all to themselves.

T

ransformation: The Maricopa County Juvenile Probation Office released a 2010 report demonstrating the value of

Inside Out Bridging Possibilities workshops on 357 of their juvenile population. Thirty percent of incarcerated youth recidivate—meaning three out of ten will again find themselves in conflict with law and society and back behind bars. For the incarcerated youth who participated in just one Release the Fear workshop, that recidivism figure dropped by 23 percent. For those who were able to benefit from multiple workshops, it dropped by 16 percent nearly half. That is an impressive impact on any child’s future as well as the community in general.. Release the Fear, Inc. has worked with youth in Arizona and internationally, in such places as Guam and El Salvador, instilling positive life changes for thousands.

Average of 450-500 Arizona youth per year have found themselves in secure care or behind the fence at Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) Out of that a three year longitudinal study was conducted 2012-2015 on 928 youth that participated in the Release the Fear program. For nine years, Release the Fear has had the opportunity to interact with over 8,500 troubled youth; these youth now know they have a life purpose. They know their wishes and dreams can come true. They know they are worth it and that they matter!

Our evidence-based curriculum has helped .

troubled kids in schools, jails, detention, and treatment centers. Through the creative processes of art, music, and communication, we teach kids cognitive behavioral skills to build self-esteem. They learn tools to help them succeed in school, conflict resolution, and to address peer pressure, and bullying.

Between the years 2007 and 2015, Release Fear has shown constant improvement upon youth’s pre- and post-reporting’s learned about perceptions of themselves.

In addition, during the years of 2012 and 2015, Release the Fear has contributed to an overall improvement of youth’s self-reported willingness to assist another if bullied. Despite a decline of reported learning’s about proactive options to prevent being bullied, their learning consistently remained over 78 percent.

Release the Fear’s mission, since 1996, is to counter the effects of violence in our communities by turning fear, anger, and hate into acceptance, hope, and self empowerment, bridging endless possibilities through the creative process.

This workshop took place on May 9-12, 2016 Opening up possibilities for the young minds of Arizona’s youth for a brighter tomorrow.© “Bridging Possibility” workshops. Through stories, activities and artwork, Release the Fear’s Workshops will help students to:

Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations. The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public. Participant Responses Participants are asked to reflect on several of the activities and then share with the group. These responses are written in their words without edit. The following responses are from the students who range in ages from 11-12. The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)? Who am I? : Character traits. Try your best. Caring. Responsibility and citizenship. / Being responsible. Turning in work. Bully can take responsibility and say it was them. Be responsible at work. / To be fair or it is going to haunt you. You need to be fair so you won’t get beat up. Nothing will be fair if you don’t start anything. Successful. The color of our skin. / Opening up and expressing yourself. When someone is emotional you can accompany them. Ask a person what is happening. To care for those in need. Creative storytelling: Caring for others. Not to be so judgmental. Standing up for each other. To be fairness. / Trustworthiness. We need to trust our peers and teachers. Trust people to respect your decision when you tell them to stop. Trust people that deserves and earned it. / To not judge people cause you don’t know what is going on. It won’t make people feel bad. How will it help there will be less people that don’t stand up for themselves. People go up since it due and shy can. / What people are going through. Why we should not judge others on how they look. Will help them out more because we know what they been through. Not being judgmental. Through the Hoops: Friendship and working together. It helps us in teamwork and being trustworthy in other students around us. It would help us have citizenship and respect in other. / Teamwork, trust. We are able to trust people to do things in our school projects. We are able to trust people to help us with our bullying problems. To work with people to build our teamworking skills. / Teamwork, trust people. With teamwork, we can accomplish our goals and work. If we all stand together, we can make a change. Use have to work together. 2 wrongs don’t make a right. / Trust, teamwork, confidence, cooperation. Teamwork to work with us. You can trust your friend that they will be there for you. It helps you trust others around you.


Reflective Take Assignment: Self-confidence. Speaking up. Having confidence in yourself. Public speaking and express your opinion. / Confidence. Confident enough to say the answers to questions in class. Confident in your decisions. Have confidence in yourself to become successful. / We talked about confidence and who’s our hero. Because sometimes when we think of our hero it could help us in school to do better. Because when we are mad or something we could think of our hero. Because we might wanna be just like our perfect heroes when we grow up. / Learned to believe in ourselves and to influence others. Encourage yourself and others to do better. It will let you have confidence. To believe in ourselves. Because he takes care of me, makes me laugh. / My mamma. My hero is my mom because she’s the only reason am here. / My mom and dad! My hero is my mom and dad because they always put clothes on my back and a roof over my head. / My hero is Aileen because she is brave and she support me. She is important because when I got bully and she was there for me even when the teacher talked to me about the bully she was there. / I pick my mom because she always feed me. And always have clothes on my back. Good. / My dad is awesome. My dad is my hero because he pays for my food. / Tyler Joseph. Tyler does a lot for people. He writes all the songs for Twenty One Pilots. They write songs about depression, anxiety, and other problems. They’ve helped me and lots of other people. / St. Vincent Du Paul. My hero is my older sister. She is 22 and she went to volunteer at St. Vincent Du Paul and it inspires me to go out and volunteer, help out other people, and just help around. / Oscar Torres. He has inspired me because he is really successful and awesome. / My mom and dad are my heroes because they help me through the hardest time. They are important because they have been with me my whole life. / My hero is Michael Jordan. He encourages me to play basketball and has sportsmanship. / Because he is a ninja and I always wanted to be a ninja. / I chose my mom because she is a single mother and she could support a family of three and herself. They are important because she gives me what I need to survive. / Because I take care of myself and think about my actions before I do it.

Seeing Beyond: Ask good questions and express our opinions and take risks. By thinking and using your brain and having more self-courage in ourself and others. Public speaking and taking risk in thing. / Take risks, intelligent decisions. Sometimes you have to take risks but make sure it is smart. We have to always make smart choices. / Ask questions, make wise choices. All subjects and you need to ask questions to clarify the assignment. It can apply to everything to make wise decisions on how your future like school, work, family. / Teamwork, trust. When doing assignments or projects all subjects. Whenever you have to depend on each other. Whenever you’re helping in pairs or groups. Drawing One’s Fears, Hopes, and Dreams and Sharing: We learned not to give up and believe in yourself that you can accomplish your dream. Public speaking and sharing with other. To be fearless and not caring for other. Public speaking and to have a dream and a plan. / Persistence. Work towards our dream. If you are being bullied, don’t let the bully control you. Persistence will help you achieve the higher. / We learned about each other’s fears, hopes, and dreams. First we need to go to school to get to our dream first. You can face your fear by standing up to the bullying. When your days are dark, so you would have to find the light. / Imagination. To have a plan in life. You can have a plan to go into college. If someone is bullying you, don’t give up your dreams, hopes, and fears. Knowing dreams, hopes, fears helps plan out your life cause you know what they are.


Reflective Take Away Assignment: Learned how to change negative to a positive, public speaking. Public speaking, classwork, confident. Public speaking, changing negative to a positive. / Positivity. Being positive in whatever you do. (work, projects, etc.) When you’re positive, you’re happy aka positivity = happiness. / Changing a negative to a positive. If we fail like a test a project, we can remember to get back up and try again. When you have a negative situation, you have to see the positive in it so nothing can stop you don’t let the haters bring. Keep going. Never give up. / To take something positive out of a negative. When you do your work in class, you don’t have homework. You have to go to work so you can get paid. Describe a time when you had an experience that you perceived (thought/saw) as negative, but through time or something you did, you perceived (thought/saw) the experience as a positive one. On Friday I wanted to go see Civil War, but instead I celebrated my little sister’s birthday and at the end I ended up going to see the movie anyway. / I went to the movies but I wanted Starbucks but I got to pick the movie. / I lost a football game in the championships and I was sad but now I look at it as that you can’t win them all. / Yesterday I had to call home to change my pants, but at the end she was not mad at me. She took me to the movies. / I was at my Nana’s for 5 days then on December 15th, 2008, we went to a hospital and I ask why are we here and she said we are going to see a friend and I was like hhhh cause I thought it would be boring. We went into this room and I saw my mom and dad. My mom was holding a baby. I was surprised, then my mom said, “Say hi to your little brother.” / One time my brother tackled me then I told my other brother that he tackled me. Then he punched him in the face. / When I was thinking about food and had to decide Panda or Burger King and when I had decide t was so hard. So I chose Panda and it was good. / The first time I went to Castles and Coasters, I was scared to go on any rides. / The first time I went to Castles and Coasters, I was kind of scared to do the ride that goes down fast. / I wanted cereal but I did not want to get it. Then my mom calls me to go eat a big breakfast. / I don’t know when but I stayed home and had to go to Taco Bell but instead we got In and Out. / When I stayed home with no TV, but my mom brought me a lot of food. / I wanted to play soccer but then I play football. / I wanted to eat cereal but I didn’t want get fat. So I got waffles. / I wanted to go the movies, but I went to spend a night at my cousin’s house. / I was losing a soccer game, then the good kid on the other team got hurt, we ended up winning. / I once broke a vase by dropping it on purpose. I was scared at first. I might be in trouble but my mom said she hated that vase and she will give it up anyway and I felt like I am relieved. / My phone was dead but I had fun with my cousin. / I missed hanging out with my friends for the day, but the next day I had the whole day with no work. / We went to go and get pizza but it was closed so we went to go get tacos but I didn’t like tacos but when I tried it, it tasted so good.

This workshop took place on May 10-12, 2016 - # 2 of 14 Opening up possibilities for the young minds of Arizona’s youth for a brighter tomorrow.© “Bridging Possibility” workshops. Through stories, activities and artwork, Release the Fear’s Workshops will help students to:

Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations. The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public. Participant Responses Participants are asked to reflect on several of the activities and then share with the group. These responses are written in their words without edit. The following responses are from the students who range in ages from 12-14. The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)? Who am I? : Motivation, bravery, faith. Gets work done. Motivation can help you succeed if you’re a different color. Makes you a better leader. / Acceptance, respect, equality. Understand others. Less judgmental. Making new friends with others. / Acceptance and to trust. To be open. It’ll allow you to get to know someone before judging. Allow you to accept easily. / Smart, athletic, fun. You can ty your hardest and motivate to succeed. You could go beyond what is expected. That tool is a motivation because it can help me get stronger in life. The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations. The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public. Participant Responses Participants are asked to reflect on several of the activities and then share with the group. Through stories, activities and artwork, Release the Fear’s Workshops will help students to:

Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication+ Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations. The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public. Participant Responses Participants are asked to reflect on several of the activities and then share with the group. These responses are written in their words without edit. The following responses are from the students who range in ages from 12-14. The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)? Who am I? : Responsibility. Doing homework. You help that person. Makes you look better by showing them. / Study, persevere, price, velocity, equations. Pushes us to work hard, strive. You won’t back down, never give up. College, get to your goal, you’ll succeed. / We learned more about people. We have to socialize. By speaking up with others. You can make new friends. / To be respectful and helpful. Listen to the teacher/teammates. Talk them out of it. Be respectful to others. / Being open, they’re consequences to everything. Being open-minded can express yourself in school. Telling how you feel about something. Noticing someone is in trouble. Being open could help so you won’t be isolated in life. Creative Storytelling: Acting, reading, imagination, creativity. Opens up your mind, helps you feel happy. Lots of ideas to get them to stop bullying. Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations. The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public. Participant Responses Participants are asked to reflect on several of the activities and then share with the group. These responses are written in their words without edit. The following responses are from the students who range in ages from 12-14. The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)? Who am I? : Be yourself. Don’t care about what people say. It wouldn’t affect you. It won’t affect your style. / Courage. Testing and presentation. Stand up and tell the teacher. Don’t give up. / Not to be a follower. I think Luisi is important to me because he has the most personality than any other person. / My dad, he motivates me. Trustworthiness. I watched my brother and sister. I was trusted with a fragile boy. I was trusted with a computer. / My dad is important to me because he works hard for his family and doesn’t complain. He is honest and responsible and that’s why he’s my hero. / My hero is Jesus Christ because he’s always there for everyone no matter what and sets a good example for everyone. / My parents. They support me and love me. / My sisters. They are important because they help me get through many hard times. / Shriek is important because he was awkward and shy and didn’t like to talk about his feelings. / Salice Rose is my hero because she’s herself and doesn’t care what others say. / My hero is my mom because I learn things important. / My hero is Dylan O’Brien because one day I texted him telling he was my hero and was the reason I kept on going on my dream of acting and he answered back telling me to keep trying and to never give up. He still sometimes gives me advice. This person is important because he is a great actor and he is the reason I keep going and trying to make my dream come true.

Someone who doesn’t get into trouble, someone I can look up to and say, “I hope that’s me one day.” / I think she is important because she encourages everyone to follow their dreams and it doesn’t matter how rich you are. Caring, genuine, honest, awesome. So awesome you want to be them. / Nora! Nora helps the city from Grim. She is very energetic while her best friend Ren is not. She is very powerful and fights with a giant hammer. She made a big difference, even though she’s not real. She is important because she protects people from Grim while risking her life. I learned that I should never eat anyone’s candy and that I shouldn’t ride broken bikes because it’s dangerous. / I switched Go-Karts with someone and their’s broke down. When someone says to do it, do it. / When I was a little younger than I am now, I was about to make a bad decision, but my inner voice said I shouldn’t do it. Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations. The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public. Participant Responses Participants are asked to reflect on several of the activities and then share with the group. These responses are written in their words without edit. The following responses are from the students who range in ages from 12-14. The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)? Who am I? : Not judgmental. To think about how people feel. To help make friends and be trustful. Everyone would want to be friends. Having friends that don’t judge you, and you doing the same. / Comparing. Honesty. Differences. Helps you in school by not getting in trouble. Being honest with them and getting help. We all can remember a time when we did not listen to our Intuition or Inner Voice. We would like you to think of an example when you did follow your intuition: When I got locked up I was mad and thought it was the worst but when I think about it now it saved my life and when I get out I’ll be stronger. / Go to school every day was negative for me but over time had a positive because I was getting my grades and my family was happy. / Wanting to fight but then I thought about it. / One time I went to jail and was very sad because I was going to do a lot of things when I got out. When I got out I was very happy. / When I wasn’t getting along with staff, I went up to him and talked to him to see what we can do so we can get along and we ended up talking it out. / Robbing a house, it went to a positive because now I’m getting my shit together. / When me and my friends stole from someone but gave the item to someone that needed it. / When I started going to school because it was boring but after all it’s kind of cool and makes knowledge for your brain / It was bad because I got laughed at but it turned into a positive because it got me out of my house. Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations. The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public. Participant Responses Participants are asked to reflect on several of the activities and then share with the group. Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations. The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public. Participant Responses Participants are asked to reflect on several of the activities and then share with the group. These responses are written in their words without edit. The following responses are from the students who range in ages from 16-17. The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)? We would like you to think of an example when you did follow your intuition: When I got my GED in Adobe. / When I can back to Adobe I felt like it was the end of my world and I just needed to leave because I can’t catch my next high in here. / Being here in Adobe and then I changed for the better. / When I had to stay here for a month before my birthday and what I got out of it is that I learned more about myself and got a lot of help for myself. / There was a time when I thought that I will never leave but I am leaving in eleven days. / When I got locked up but it was a good thing because it stopped me from a lot of things. / Me, being at Adobe and how I changed positively through time was my attitude towards things. / Meeting my sister and her mom. I thought it was a negative because I wasn’t use to having a sister, especially a younger one. But as time went by I’ve realized that Zoe isn’t just my family, she’s my pride and joy.
