Foundation. This mid report reflects how the creative processes through the "Bridging Possibilities" and our Train the Trainer programs, enabling us to expand our reach to enlightened and enriched more youth. These results from 157 young lives and what they experienced together through the "Bridging Possibilities" Character Education program. Demonstrating the power and importance of inspiring and empowering our youth with the essential tools so that they are able to make better life choices, find their gifts and know that they matter!

Allowing them to lead a more meaningful productive life and become tomorrow's leaders in Arizona and around the world, for a brighter tomorrow for all.

W

hat: Release the Fear, a non-profit health and human services organization, teaches Arizona’s youth the

life skills needed to combat the effects of Peer Pressure, Gang involvement, Bullying, Abuse, and Violence in our society and to make better life choices. Release the Fear (RTF) has worked with thousands of at-risk youth and adults in Arizona and around the world, offering experiential programs that help reverse the paralyzing effects of fear and diminished self-worth. Our programs encourage youth to explore safe and healthy lifestyles and to overcome disabilities through the development of leadership and social skills through evidence-based curriculum that meets National Common Core standards. H

ow: These programs stimulate whole-brain thinking and develop metacognitive thought processing by utilizing

new applied-knowledge teaching methods. These programs demonstrate options that awaken a creative consciousness and expose the unlimited potential of critical thinking and problem solving to help participants develop better cognitive behavioral skills. Our trained facilitators guide participants through interactive creative activities and analytically explore the connectedness to their lives. Release the Fear utilizes inquiry-based learning experiences, an educational practice where the teacher/facilitator uses controlled questioning to serve as a learning guide in order to move students towards new understandings. Educational research shows that student retention increases when new learning is discovered through inquiry practices, as the student is able to take ownership of these findings. The teacher/facilitator must act as guide while being an expert questioner, thinking of the end objective at all times and posing questions to allow students to reach objectives on their own. When this is done, students are able to create new thought patterns which connect and build on their applied knowledge and personal life goals.

Without these essential life skills, the still- maturing minds of detained youth view their future as bleak with no hope for a “normal” life.

A

pproach: Through experiential programs, we encourage participants to develop valuable core life skills, better

critical problem solving, and a healthy sense of understanding of self and others. Through the RTF programs, participants discover that anything is possible, that they have a purpose in life. They see why they do matter to the world, to the community, and most of all to themselves.

T

ransformation: The Maricopa County Juvenile Probation Office released a 2010 report demonstrating the value of

Inside Out Bridging Possibilities workshops on 357 of their juvenile population. Thirty percent of incarcerated youth recidivate—meaning three out of ten will again find themselves in conflict with law and society and back behind bars.

For the incarcerated youth who participated in just one Release the Fear workshop, that recidivism figure dropped by 23 percent. For those who were able to benefit from multiple workshops, it dropped by 16 percent nearly half. That is an impressive impact on any child’s future as well as the community in general..

Release the Fear, Inc. has worked with youth in Arizona and internationally, in such places as Guam and El Salvador, instilling positive life changes for thousands.

Average of 450-500 Arizona youth per year have found themselves in secure care or behind the fence at Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) Out of that a three year longitudinal study was conducted 2012-2015 on 928 youth that participated in the Release the Fear program.

For nine years, Release the Fear has had the opportunity to interact with over 8,500 troubled youth; these youth now know they have a life purpose. They know their wishes and dreams can come true. They know they are worth it and that they matter!

Our evidence-based curriculum has helped .

troubled kids in schools, jails, detention, and treatment centers. Through the creative processes of art, music, and communication, we teach kids cognitive behavioral skills to build self-esteem. They learn tools to help them succeed in school, conflict resolution, and to address peer pressure, and bullying.

Between the years 2007 and 2015, Release Fear has shown constant improvement upon youth’s pre- and post-reporting’s learned about perceptions of themselves.

In addition, during the years of 2012 and 2015, Release the Fear has contributed to an overall improvement of youth’s self-reported willingness to assist another if bullied. Despite a decline of reported learning’s about proactive options to prevent being bullied, their learning consistently remained over 78 percent.

Release the Fear’s mission, since 1996, is to counter the effects of violence in our communities by turning fear, anger, and hate into acceptance, hope, and self empowerment, bridging endless possibilities through the creative process.

Thanks to The Diane and Bruce Halle Foundation, 22 young lives from Quentin Elementary School experienced their Possibilities.

Through stories, activities and artwork, Release the Fear’s Workshops will help students to:

     

Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

Participant Responses Participants are asked to reflect on several of the activities and then share with the group.

The following responses are from the students who range in ages from 11-12.

The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I? : Character traits. Try your best. Caring. Responsibility and citizenship. / Being responsible.

Turning in work. Bully can take responsibility and say it was them. Be responsible at work. / To be fair or it is going to haunt you. You need to be fair so you won’t get beat up. Nothing will be fair if you don’t start anything.

Successful. The color of our skin. / Opening up and expressing yourself. When someone is emotional you can accompany them. Ask a person what is happening. To care for those in need.

Creative storytelling: Caring for others. Not to be so judgmental. Standing up for each other. To be fairness. / Trustworthiness. We need to trust our peers and teachers. Trust people to respect your decision when you tell them to stop. Trust people that deserves and earned it. / To not judge people cause you don’t know what is going on. It won’t make people feel bad. How will it help there will be less people that don’t stand up for themselves. People go up since it due and shy can. / What people are going through. Why we should not judge others on how they look. Will help them out more because we know what they been through. Not being judgmental.

Through the Hoops: Friendship and working together. It helps us in teamwork and being trustworthy in other students around us. It would help us have citizenship and respect in other. / Teamwork, trust. We are able to trust people to do things in our school projects. We are able to trust people to help us with our bullying problems.

To work with people to build our teamworking skills. / Teamwork, trust people. With teamwork, we can accomplish our goals and work. If we all stand together, we can make a change. Use have to work together. 2 wrongs don’t make a right. / Trust, teamwork, confidence, cooperation. Teamwork to work with us. You can trust your friend that they will be there for you. It helps you trust others around you.

Reflective Take Assignment: Self-confidence. Speaking up. Having confidence in yourself. Public speaking and express your opinion. / Confidence. Confident enough to say the answers to questions in class. Confident in your decisions. Have confidence in yourself to become successful. / We talked about confidence and who’s our hero. Because sometimes when we think of our hero it could help us in school to do better. Because when we are mad or something we could think of our hero. Because we might wanna be just like our perfect heroes when we grow up. / Learned to believe in ourselves and to influence others. Encourage yourself and others to do better. It will let you have confidence. To believe in ourselves.

He writes all the songs for Twenty One Pilots. They write songs about depression, anxiety, and other problems. They’ve helped me and lots of other people. / St. Vincent Du Paul. My hero is my older sister. She is 22 and she went to volunteer at St. Vincent Du Paul and it inspires me to go out and volunteer, help out other people, and just help around. / Oscar Torres. He has inspired me because he is really successful and awesome. / My mom and dad are my heroes because they help me through the hardest time. They are important because they have been with me my whole life. / My hero is Michael Jordan.

He encourages me to play basketball and has sportsmanship. / Because he is a ninja and I always wanted to be a ninja. / I chose my mom because she is a single mother and she could support a family of three and herself. They are important because she gives me what I need to survive. / Because I take care of myself and think about my actions before I do it.

Seeing Beyond: Ask good questions and express our opinions and take risks. By thinking and using your brain and having more self-courage in ourself and others. Public speaking and taking risk in thing. / Take risks, intelligent decisions. Sometimes you have to take risks but make sure it is smart. We have to always make smart choices. / Ask questions, make wise choices. All subjects and you need to ask questions to clarify the assignment. It can apply to everything to make wise decisions on how your future like school, work, family. / Teamwork, trust. When doing assignments or projects all subjects. Whenever you have to depend on each other.

Whenever you’re helping in pairs or groups.

Drawing One’s Fears, Hopes, and Dreams and Sharing: We learned not to give up and believe in yourself that you can accomplish your dream. Public speaking and sharing with other. To be fearless and not caring for other.

Public speaking and to have a dream and a plan. / Persistence. Work towards our dream. If you are being bullied, don’t let the bully control you. Persistence will help you achieve the higher. / We learned about each other’s fears, hopes, and dreams. First we need to go to school to get to our dream first. You can face your fear by standing up to the bullying. When your days are dark, so you would have to find the light. / Imagination. To have a plan in life. You can have a plan to go into college. If someone is bullying you, don’t give up your dreams, hopes, and fears. Knowing dreams, hopes, fears helps plan out your life cause you know what they are.

Reflective Take Away Assignment: Learned how to change negative to a positive, public speaking. Public speaking, classwork, confident. Public speaking, changing negative to a positive. / Positivity. Being positive in whatever you do. (work, projects, etc.) When you’re positive, you’re happy aka positivity = happiness. / Changing a negative to a positive. If we fail like a test a project, we can remember to get back up and try again. When you have a negative situation, you have to see the positive in it so nothing can stop you don’t let the haters bring.

Keep going. Never give up. / To take something positive out of a negative. When you do your work in class, you don’t have homework. You have to go to work so you can get paid.

Describe a time when you had an experience that you perceived (thought/saw) as negative, but through time or something you did, you perceived (thought/saw) the experience as a positive one. On Friday I wanted to go see Civil War, but instead I celebrated my little sister’s birthday and at the end I ended up going to see the movie anyway. / I went to the movies but I wanted Starbucks but I got to pick the movie. / I lost a football game in the championships and I was sad but now I look at it as that you can’t win them all. / Yesterday I had to call home to change my pants, but at the end she was not mad at me. She took me to the movies. / I was at my Nana’s for 5 days then on December 15th, 2008, we went to a hospital and I ask why are we here and she said we are going to see a friend and I was like hhhh cause I thought it would be boring. We went into this room and I saw my mom and dad. My mom was holding a baby. I was surprised, then my mom said, “Say hi to your little brother.” / One time my brother tackled me then I told my other brother that he tackled me. Then he punched him in the face. / When I was thinking about food and had to decide Panda or Burger King and when I had decide t was so hard. So I chose Panda and it was good. / The first time I went to Castles and Coasters, I was scared to go on any rides. / The first time I went to Castles and Coasters, I was kind of scared to do the ride that goes down fast. / I wanted cereal but I did not want to get it. Then my mom calls me to go eat a big breakfast. / I don’t know when but I stayed home and had to go to Taco Bell but instead we got In and Out. / When I stayed home with no TV, but my mom brought me a lot of food. / I wanted to play soccer but then I play football. / I wanted to eat cereal but I didn’t want get fat. So I got waffles. / I wanted to go the movies, but I went to spend a night at my cousin’s house. / I was losing a soccer game, then the good kid on the other team got hurt, we ended up winning. / I once broke a vase by dropping it on purpose. I was scared at first. I might be in trouble but my mom said she hated that vase and she will give it up anyway and I felt like I am relieved. / My phone was dead but I had fun with my cousin. / I missed hanging out with my friends for the day, but the next day I had the whole day with no work. / We went to go and get pizza but it was closed so we went to go get tacos but I didn’t like tacos but when I tried it, it tasted so good.

This workshop took place on May 10-12, 2016 - # 2 of 14 Opening up possibilities for the young minds of Arizona’s youth for a brighter tomorrow.© “Bridging Possibility” workshops.

Through stories, activities and artwork, Release the Fear’s Workshops will help students to:

     

Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I? : Motivation, bravery, faith. Gets work done. Motivation can help you succeed if you’re a different color. Makes you a better leader. / Acceptance, respect, equality. Understand others. Less judgmental. Making new friends with others. / Acceptance and to trust. To be open. It’ll allow you to get to know someone before judging. Allow you to accept easily. / Smart, athletic, fun. You can ty your hardest and motivate to succeed. You could go beyond what is expected. That tool is a motivation because it can help me get stronger in life.

Reflective Take Away Assignment: Positivity. You think positive and later on, there is a positive outcome. You think positive about your own choices and do the right thing. Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I? : Respect. Stay on task. If you respect someone you won’t do it or you will stop it. We would apply it in our job communities and with people we don’t like. / The only person to accomplish goals. Concentrating in school.

Intervene. Do what I need to do. / Helping and honesty. Help people who need it. Telling somebody. Be productive in the community.

Creative story telling: Fairness and citizenship. Be fair to everyone and not be rude. Help by being mutual with everyone. Be fair to everyone. / Be detailed. Be detailed on your assignments. Find out the real situation. Be detailed in your job and school to get a good reputation. / You’re able to do certain responsibilities. Overcome fears in school. Hero: Who is Your Hero and Why do you think are they important? What characteristics or qualities, would you or do you, look for in a Hero? Because it makes me tell myself that I can do it. No matter what happens or comes up to the problem. / Because I’m the only person that can keep myself going and give up, also I am the most important person in my life. / King Tut is my leader because he was a young and good leader. / Because he is my primo and he helps me. / Mom because she’s been there all my life and has comforted me when I was feeling some type of way. / My grandfather because he was always there when I needed him. / My mom. Because she’s always been there for me and picked me up off my feet. Through the Hoops: Skills or Tools Learned: Teamwork. School, sports, school clubs (chess etc.) People have your back. Teamwork helps to force a bully. You can’t do everything alone. You need a team to help fulfill a dream. / Teamwork. When playing sports. When someone needs help you need teamwork. When you’re at work or at home. / Teamwork, cooperation. Staying focused, keeping a positive mind set, and using teamwork and communication. Having self-confidence. It will make you more confident, happy, and courageous.

Seeing Beyond: Feeling. Touching. Science, art, playing charades, touching things you can’t see. / Using senses. Science because you need to have as much knowledge of the thing. When you eat. / You use touch. You can use touch to feel what you’re holding. You feel what you are describing.

Drawing one’s Fears, Hopes, and Dreams and Sharing: Everyone has fears and good times in their lives. It makes it all equal. It would join us all. It will help you to make more friends and be made truthful. / How opportunities are always open. By getting a degree. Trying to help when you get a chance. When you get rejected there’s another fish in the sea. / Focusing on our dreams. Cope in bad environments. Focus on the good. Focus on the things we might need.

We can remember a time when we did not listen to our intuition or inner voice. Who am I? : Some of us have things in common and to respect each other. To have certain expectations for myself and what I want and how I want to treat others. Because it shows that we all have thing in common and that we can help others. Even though we all come from different backgrounds we have things in common. / We are equal in some way. Through the Hoops: Cooperation, self awareness, responsibility. Helps with expectations. More aware of situations and warning signs if we’re in the wrong. We all can remember a time when we did not listen to our Intuition or Inner Voice. We would like you to think of an example when you did follow your Intuition? What can you learn from this situation? I was at school and I was tired and I put my head down but my inner voice told me be prepared. I guess well I was down the principle walked in. Listen to myself. / I didn’t think before I did something and got in trouble. Go with your gut feeling. / When I got out of here with great attitude but fell off and f’d up. To stay focused and not get mislead. / When I was asked to do something bed and my voice kept telling me no but I did it. Follow my inner voice. / When it was telling me to hide and when I did the cops passed by. To listen to the inner voice when I can or as much as I can. / I stopped and thinked bout what was gonna happen so I didn’t do what I was gonna do. / That doing something that I shouldn’t be doing is bad, wrong. / Yeah when my inner voice told me to do good on parole but I didn’t. What I can learn is to listen to your inner voice. / When everyone asked me to smoke I followed my intuition and it helped me out. That I need to follow my own intuition. / When I was inside my house something told me to go outside and when I went I found someone almost dying in front of my house so I called 911 so I can help them. I can learn about myself. / Not to rob this house and I didn’t but my friends did and it was a cops house. Don’t rob no more.

Give an example of when you did listen to you Intuition of Inner Voice. What was the result of listening and following that Intuition? What can you learn from this situation? It found that my inner voice motivates myself. When I did not want to go to school but, my inner voice told me to go. How to keep myself motivated. / When that voice was talking to me I was to worried about doing what I wanted, I had a gun pulled out on me. To follow your gut feeling when it is talk to you. / I was playing poker and had a snack on the line and something told me to go all in and I won. That you should listen to your inner voice because it can help you. / When I went on the run it was good because I stayed out longer but I could of just done good. Keep listening to it

Through stories, activities and artwork, Release the Fear’s Workshops will help students to:

Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication+ Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I? : Responsibility. Doing homework. You help that person. Makes you look better by showing them. / Study, persevere, price, velocity, equations. Pushes us to work hard, strive. You won’t back down, never give up.

College, get to your goal, you’ll succeed. / We learned more about people. We have to socialize. By speaking up with others. You can make new friends. / To be respectful and helpful. Through the Hoops: Trustness, teamwork, bravery. The teacher can trust you to tell what’s going on, cooperate.

Trust people to have your back, brave enough to stand up to the bully. Being brave enough to try to get that job. / Teamwork, trust, partner work. Give people your trust, trusting peers. People have your back. Ownership, you can’t always do it yourself. / Trustworthy. If something happens and the teacher ask you an important questions, he/she can. Drawing One’s Fears, Hopes, and Dreams and Sharing: We learned people’s big hopes and things they want to accomplish. Learning what other people want to be and create friendships. Keep your dreams in mind. / That they trust us to understand their fears. Because some people are afraid of public speaking. This can help with bullying because some people are afraid of bullying. Hero: Who is Your Hero and Why do you think are they important? What characteristics or qualities, would you or do you, look for in a Hero? Mom. Because she gave me life and is always there for me. / Dad because he works hard to take care of everybody and he helps me. / My parents because they’re always there for me. / Luisi. I think Luisi is important to me because he has the most personality than any other person. / My dad, he motivates me. Trustworthiness. I watched my brother and sister. I was trusted with a fragile boy. I was trusted with a computer. / My dad is important to me because he works hard for his family and doesn’t complain. He is honest and responsible and that’s why he’s my hero. / My hero is Jesus Christ because he’s always there for everyone no matter what and sets a good example for everyone. / My parents. They support me and love me. / My sisters. They are important because they help me get through many hard times. / Shriek is important because he was awkward and shy and didn’t like to talk about his feelings. / Salice Rose is my hero because she’s herself and doesn’t care what others say. / My hero is my mom because I learn things important. / My hero is Dylan O’Brien because one day I texted him telling he was my hero and was the reason I kept on going on my dream of acting and he answered back telling me to keep trying and to never give up. He still sometimes gives me advice. This person is important because he is a great actor and he is the reason I keep going and trying to make my dream come true.

Through the Hoops: Skills or Tools Learned: Communication. We could help others in weak areas for help in return. You could communicate to an adult. Communication helps with relationships. / Citizenship. Trust people to help you. Helping each other. Helping others showing we care. /Trust and communication. Communicate and trust peers. Seeing Beyond: We learned to see other people’s points of view. You can apply this in school because you get to see other people’s way of learning. Observe right from wrong. / To use your sense of imagination to think about what something is. Science because we could use our imagination in observations. To imagine the consequences of your actions. / Work together and fairness. Science to help make a hypothesis. You work with other people. / Imagination. Plan so we can be ahead for when something important will arrive. What your goals are and planning ahead.

Drawing one’s Fears, Hopes, and Dreams and Sharing: We learned about other’s dreams. School is setting up for future. Don’t let others ruin your dream. Because it’s you. / Persevere through the hard times. Persevere to set your goals. Leave bullies alone. Go through your fears. / Memories and fears can stop your dreams. Continue in school. It felt great and amazing because I chose to stand and did not refuse to do what asked. / A time when I was this was when my friend was sad and I helped her feel better. It felt great to see her smile. / I was trustworthy and caring when I took care of my brother and sister when my mom and dad were gone. / A time when I was trustworthy or caring is when my friend was going through a rough time and she needed someone to talk to. / Well when one of my heroes was having problems, and I decided to stand up for her and helped her get through. / I was trustworthy when my friend told me a secret and I was caring by listening to her.
