program. This final report reflects how the creative processes through 3 of the "Bridging Possibilities" program that enlightened and enriched youth. These results from 52 young lives and what they experienced together. Demonstrating the power and importance of inspiring and empowering our youth with the essential tools so that they are able to make better life choices, find their gifts and know that they matter! Allowing them to lead a more meaningful productive life and become tomorrow's leaders in Arizona and around the world, for a brighter tomorrow for all.

W

hat: Release the Fear, a non-profit health and human services organization, teaches Arizona’s youth the

life skills needed to combat the effects of Peer Pressure, Gang involvement, Bullying, Abuse, and Violence in our society and to make better life choices. Release the Fear (RTF) has worked with thousands of at-risk youth and adults in Arizona and around the world, offering experiential programs that help reverse the paralyzing effects of fear and diminished self-worth. Our programs encourage youth to explore safe and healthy lifestyles and to overcome disabilities through the development of leadership and social skills through evidence-based curriculum that meets National Common Core standards. H

ow: These programs stimulate whole-brain thinking and develop metacognitive thought processing by utilizing

new applied-knowledge teaching methods. These programs demonstrate options that awaken a creative consciousness and expose the unlimited potential of critical thinking and problem solving to help participants develop better cognitive behavioral skills. Our trained facilitators guide participants through interactive creative activities and analytically explore the connectedness to their lives. Release the Fear utilizes inquiry-based learning experiences, an educational practice where the teacher/facilitator uses controlled questioning to serve as a learning guide in order to move students towards new understandings. Educational research shows that student retention increases when new learning is discovered through inquiry practices, as the student is able to take ownership of these findings. The teacher/facilitator must act as guide while being an expert questioner, thinking of the end objective at all times and posing questions to allow students to reach objectives on their own. When this is done, students are able to create new thought patterns which connect and build on their applied knowledge and personal life goals.

Without these essential life skills, the still- maturing minds of detained youth view their future as bleak with no hope for a “normal” life.

A

pproach: Through experiential programs, we encourage participants to develop valuable core life skills, better

critical problem solving, and a healthy sense of understanding of self and others. Through the RTF programs, participants discover that anything is possible, that they have a purpose in life. They see why they do matter to the world, to the community, and most of all to themselves.

T

ransformation: The Maricopa County Juvenile Probation Office released a 2010 report demonstrating the value of

Inside Out Bridging Possibilities workshops on 357 of their juvenile population. Thirty percent of incarcerated youth recidivate—meaning three out of ten will again find themselves in conflict with law and society and back behind bars.

For the incarcerated youth who participated in just one Release the Fear workshop, that recidivism figure dropped by 23 percent. For those who were able to benefit from multiple workshops, it dropped by 16 percent nearly half. That is an impressive impact on any child’s future as well as the community in general..

Release the Fear, Inc. has worked with youth in Arizona and internationally, in such places as Guam and El Salvador, instilling positive life changes for thousands.

Average of 450-500 Arizona youth per year have found themselves in secure care or behind the fence at Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) Out of that a three year longitudinal study was conducted 2012-2015 on 928 youth that participated in the Release the Fear program.

For nine years, Release the Fear has had the opportunity to interact with over 8,500 troubled youth; these youth now know they have a life purpose. They know their wishes and dreams can come true. They know they are worth it and that they matter!

Our evidence-based curriculum has helped .

troubled kids in schools, jails, detention, and treatment centers. Through the creative processes of art, music, and communication, we teach kids cognitive behavioral skills to build self-esteem. They learn tools to help them succeed in school, conflict resolution, and to address peer pressure, and bullying.

Between the years 2007 and 2015, Release Fear has shown constant improvement upon youth’s pre- and post-reporting’s learned about perceptions of themselves.

In addition, during the years of 2012 and 2015, Release the Fear has contributed to an overall improvement of youth’s self-reported willingness to assist another if bullied. Despite a decline of reported learning’s about proactive options to prevent being bullied, their learning consistently remained over 78 percent.

Release the Fear’s mission, since 1996, is to counter the effects of violence in our communities by turning fear, anger, and hate into acceptance, hope, and self empowerment, bridging endless possibilities through the creative process.

Through stories, activities and artwork, Release the Fear’s Workshops will help students to:

Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

Participant Responses Participants are asked to reflect on several of the activities and then share with the group.

The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I? : Awareness, everybody has the same problems. Teamwork, cooperation. Our similarity is going to determine what we need to work on. Our changes that we make. / Skilled guitarist, dancer, author, gamer. Band class and guitar class. Helps socially, creativity./ Honesty, empathy, teamwork. The teachers can trust you more.

Look at their true self instead of listening to rumors. Makes people trust more. / Community, courage, honesty. It helps you see and understand that others have been in similar situations. You see that the people you stereotype Are the same as you and you virtually stereotyping. Stand up for what’s right for yourself and others.

Creative story telling: Character traits and teamwork. You can apply the six character traits by respecting teacher rules, being responsible about your actions and work and how you treat others. Because if you have these six traits them you won’t bully others and you will try to prevent others from bullying. Because without this you can’t succeed. / Trustworthiness and teamwork. If an incident happens, you can be honest. Being able to trust yourself to speak up. Being able to develop a proper relationship. / Teamwork. School sports. Could unite kids in school and life. Helps work to either one. / How others have struggled in their life. Accepting feedback from others and applying it. Taking emotions from the bully and not use it on others. Remembering that you are the most important person in your life because you will choose who you will be.

Reflective Take Away Assignment: It made us question are we who we want to be. Helps us understand other’s feelings and emotions. We’ll think about who we want to be not what other people want us to think. Today’s a new day and I’m a new person. I’m going to be who I want to be. / Self- respect. More self-esteem and confidence. To know you are a better than that. You will be and feel more positive. / Empathy, honesty, and selflessness. If you put yourself in your teacher’s shoes, you can understand the stress that the teachers feel with our peers. Allows you to pressure peers positively and be able to accept feedback from fear you are trying to control. We would be able to appreciate the feelings of others that allows us to help them better. / Self-esteem, empathy, courage, change, motivation. Others point of view to improve and also motivate you to get good grades and build courage at

school. Get to know yourself, motivate you to work under stress and to have the courage to go with your own decisions. To encourage yourself to do better and see in other people’s point of view, and to always have a positive outlook.

Mirror Work: Look at Yourself in the eyes (ONLY) and tell yourself that you love or like yourself just the way you are: It makes me feel weird because I’m upset with myself right now. / I love myself the way I am. / It makes me feel great. / Fun, I feel happy. / Makes me feel happy and get my day going. / It makes me feel comfortable and courageous. It makes me feel to have more pride in myself. / Cautious. / Comfortable. / Indifferent. / I smile in spite of everything. / Kind of like a liar. / Good and happy. / Happy and relaxed. / It makes me proud and happy. / Like I can accept who I am.

Hero: Who is Your Hero and Why do you think are they important? What characteristics or qualities, would you or do you, look for in a Hero? My friend Levi. He helps me through hard times and is smart, caring, and always knows what to do. / My mom is my hero because she is always there when I need her. Because she’s been there, she supports me. She is my mom. / My parents. Because they love me no matter what. / My dad, he helps me when I need help. Because he is always supportive of me. / My brother. Always there for me in good or bad. / My hero is a band called Sublime. They find a way to make music about very serious topics and kind of make light of the subject. When I listen to Sublime, I feel like I can handle anything that comes my way. / The “Corps”. Because it saves innocent people’s souls and brings them back to their rightful homes. / My father and mother. They always love me no matter what. / Batman. They are important because he worked hard to get where he is and his powers were not a gift. / Batman and my mom. Because she supports me in the decisions I go with. / Because I love her and she loves me. Just like God does. / My parents. They’ve cared for me and stayed with me through some really hard times. / My mom is important because I love her and she does everything for me. / Superman.

Because I love his sense of humor. / My family because they are always there for me and have my back and will never give up on me no matter what. Because my family, I will always need them. / Ichigo Kurosaki. He is willing to sacrifice for his family, friends, and anyone who is in need of help. He doesn’t take note of his limits, and is willing to go to any extent to save someone.

Through the Hoops: Skills or Tools Learned: Teamwork, determination, awareness. In school you’re going to have to use teamwork on assignments, have determination to get through school work. By being aware of the situation so you can determine to fix the situation. Use determination to reach and complete obstacles in life and to be more aware of any milestones that appear in your way. / How to navigate through obstacles from life. When we fail a test we know later on how to improve on it. By studying and asking for help. Knowing the right thing to say or do when dealing with bullying. This helps in life because out of nowhere someone can pass away and you can navigate through the hoop by learning that everything happens for a reason. / Working with others, trust, awareness, patience. Classes, activities with peers and teachers. Team up and stand up for each other. Be able to cooperate with people in school, jobs, or anything. / How to be patient with others. When something is not going our way, we have to be able to cope. Learning how to be patient. That there will be hoops and bumps in our life and we overcome them.

Seeing Beyond: Critical thinking, creative. Math, science, writing, takes imagination and creativity. Thinking outside the box. To get through certain situations. / Critical thinking, teamwork, context clues, trust, helpfulness.

Writing mostly because you have to think hard and ask questions about the assignments. Figuring out how to understand what clues are given. You have to think before you ask Use your surroundings. Ask questions when you don’t understand./ Content, clues, deductive reasoning, teamwork. Math how to do the problem right. Science how to use the scientific method. English deciphering what the author’s meaning. Using other people’s help to get the advantage needed to be successful. Imagine being a forensic scientist; you have to use everything around you to get the answer you need. Teamwork is needed everywhere you go. Home ,work, and recreation, if you want to be your best, getting help from other people allows you to see improvement. / Teamwork, patience, critical thinking. Science, because you make theories based on observation. English because to improve description.

Math because you think critically about your answers. You will always be thinking about choices, have to be patience with others and work with them.

Drawing One’s Fears, Hopes, and Dreams and Sharing: See each other’s struggles and fear. Help motivate us to do our best. By connecting with them, help understand each other’s reasoning. Help us see the similarities and differences in each other, understand where they come from. / Courage, communication. Courage: being able to go into an advanced class. Communication: being able to communicate issues. Courage: being able to stand up to the bully. Communication: Being able to say something about others. Courage: be able to take chances.

Communication: being able to communicate in your job./ Visualization, determination, perspective, understanding. You use it to visualize your education goals and be determined to meet it. Understand what must be done. You can visualize what others are feeling and understanding what you can do to change it. Because you visualize your dreams, be determined to meet them, see other’s views of what you’re doing and understanding what must be done to meet those goals. / Understanding, perceptiveness, courage and facing your fears. Doing what you have to do now to get to where you want to be. You need courage to stand up. Being aware of yourself and respecting yourself for who you are.

Describe A Time when you had an experience that you perceived (thought/saw) as a negative, but through time or something you did, you perceived (thought/saw) the experience as a positive one. Draw on the other side of paper, a picture of how you felt about this experience. Draw how you felt at the beginning and how you felt when the change took place. Then, write about it below: Getting into treatment it felt like hell and now that it is needed to be treated. / When I was at school and I got a bad score, I was mad. But then the teacher said we could retake the test. / I used to steal from the store, and I got in trouble and all I could think of was how I got caught. In the end I saw it as an opportunity to reverse my actions because of the consequences. / This place, coming here I thought it would be awful, but I actually love it. / Negative.

Not trusting anyone. Positive: finding that one person to trust and to talk to and that person is Joseph. / I went to SEF. It was boring and I was in there for seven months. After a couple of months I realized it was the next step in moving on in my life. / When I had to do the dot test but l later saw that it was to help see things differently. / I thought to myself on why be mad and sad about life when there is a good side to it. / I was bored and didn’t want to participate. Then it made me feel like having fun. / When I got shot it was a negative because I was hurt but it turned out to be positive because I realized that it was a lesson from God and that what I was doing wasn’t right and that it can be worse next time. / When I saw a boy fighting with his father. My first thought was what an evil kid, but then I saw he was protecting his mom. / I left my mom’s house and was angry and sad for a long time. Then I realized I could get help I needed because I went there. / I always saw math as a negative because it was always hard and I always got bad grades in it. / Treatment, I was nervous. I felt like an outcast but over time I realized it’s here to help. / When I had a ps1 I was playing it all the time. Then one day I bumped the tv and it fell and broke. I was mad because I couldn’t play games anymore but later I was happy because I spent more time outside.

Through stories, activities and artwork, Release the Fear’s Workshops will help students to:

     

Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I? : Communicating, different points of view. Working for who you want to be and goals. To not be the bully, step up for people and ourselves. How to deal with sticky situations. / Breathe, take a step back, don’t judge, everyone has their own story. Don’t jump to conclusions. Don’t stereotype. Breathe, don’t get worked up.

Ex. Workplace job.

Creative story telling: Character counts. Set an example, inspire and educate. I would understand they must be feeling insecure. Be that person. / We all have our own differences. Use all the character count. Tolerance, patience, love, you can turn away. You can use all the character counts can be use in many ways.

Through the Hoops: Teamwork, open-minded, trust. Don’t be afraid ask or offer help. Help somebody, see beyond the bully. Always a helping hand. / Trust others and ask for help. You can trust teachers, take detours, learn from your mistakes. When you had your eyes closed, it was like who is going to be there in your life.

Knowing that we all have hoops to deal with or conquer.

Reflective Take Away Assignment: Care about yourself, love you, okay to look up. Confidence, don’t believe what they say. Not letting what people say bring you down. Everyday, know yourself, know your worth. / We all of heroes and difference in heroes and ourself. Don’t let people cloud your judgment of sunshine. You do what you believe in; what would your hero do. Be creative, look at yourself and think more beautiful things about you.

Mirror Work: Look at Yourself in the eyes (ONLY) and tell yourself that you love or like yourself just the way you are: Good, confident, nervous / At first award because I haven’t done it before. After doing it though made me feel different good. / I feel weird. Like it hard to explain but it feels like its not true or its not me saying it. / Important / It feels weird because I really don’t say pretty stuff about myself. I don’t take compliments as well as I should. / It made me feel alright. / Confidence, happy to be who I am. / Makes me feel better, I tell myself the greatest things I love to hear and it changes the energy around me.

Hero: Who is Your Hero and Why do you think are they important? What characteristics or qualities, would you or do you, look for in a Hero? Maya Angelou Super woman / Jax my little brother. He is a miracle to me and my family. Because he is a miracle. / My mom is my hero because she is my rock. She has my back no matter what I do. She always tries to make my life easy and to make sure I am happy. If I didn’t have my mom when I was younger I wouldn’t be here or I wouldn’t be the same girl I am now. / She is important because every bad thing she’s been through she made a good outcome very positive, bravery, really strong. / My grandmother. ‘“cause they are everything to me. ‘Cause I had role model as a mom and she always tries or makes me get on the right path / Malcolm X. I look up to him because he was the type of person that did not care what the situation was he always wanted to deal with it the best what he could and fought for what he believed in.

Brilliant and how he looked at things / My mom. They know me and love me for that My mom is someone who understands exactly who I am. She is always there to help me through any situations and knows what I am going through. / Myself, because I saved myself. Because I’ll always be there for me and lift me up.

Seeing Beyond: Creativity, not just assuming. History, English, mostly all see beyond the words, be able to imagine. Image. / Creativity, assumptions. English, math, history, science, art, reading. Go after your dream.

Drawing One’s Fears, Hopes, and Dreams and Sharing: How to set your mind to it. You have dreams and goals, and school will help you. They could have dreams as well. Wanting to move forward. / Everyone has a different past. Think before saying. Know before acting. Allow people to be themselves around you.

Reflective Take Away Assignment: Seeing from their point of view. Trust what you think about the people and situation. Trusting your first gut feeling. / Listen to your gut. If something’s off, tell someone. Be sober when you make decisions.

Give an example of when you did listen to your Intuition or Inner Voice. What was the result of listening and following that Intuition: When not to go to the Party in my freshman year. Filled with drugs and alcohol and could ‘cause harm. Friends tried to pressure into me going I stood my ground. A lot of shows who are my real friends and a lot about Peer Pressure. Change my outcome of my life. / I listen to my inner voice when I am faced with the choice if I should stay in school or not. I am gonna graduate hopefully next year. It’s best to listen and not just do because you think it’s the right thing at the moment. / I feel that if I don’t listen to my inner voice I won’t be happy with the decision. That you should trust what you belief. / When I was wanting to start high school again. You may not see everything but that does not make it impossible. / When I needed to do something. Right the inner voice told me to do the right thing. On how to do better. / Sometimes I’m not always right, but I can learn from my mistake. And sometimes I need to follow in instincts. That I’m not always right on. / I really don’t want to finish high school. When I was a freshman but I didn’t want to be a failure so I stayed and I ended up being good at school and see myself being successful. Always trust instinct, don’t give up, follow dreams. / I listen to my intuition everyday, it’s crazy because whatever I think and feel about something I always end up being right, it’s almost like I sense the future. Trust my gut the worlds higher power is looking out for me. / One time I was taking a test and was confused because two of the options was similar and I trusted my inner voice and ended up getting the correct answer with just trusting my inner voice and going with my first thought. You can learn that trusting your intuition or inner voice isn’t so bad.

Who am I? : Honesty, acceptance, equality. Get along with others, get to know other’s for help. Understand, be able to tell someone. Takes you to success, accept who you are. / communication, confidence, expressing, compatibility, honesty. We can relate to others with deeper conversations. Deeper understanding, we can throw ourselves out to protect another. Helps us connect with other people, express dreams or ideas, help people who need help. / Similarities, knowing they’re not the only one. Honesty, courage, responsibility. Honesty because you can apply it on a test or exam. Responsibility because you can be responsible to do the right thing by standing up for yourself. You will be expected to have these traits and especially in the work place.

Reflective Take Away Assignment: Self-confidence, courage, self-image, responsibility, self-concept. It helps you to have confidence in clubs. You can take and it will also help in classes. If you are confident about your own decisions and morals, then peer pressure is not an answer. It will help with confidence in yourself and it will also help you find good. / Self honesty, seeing the difference with self-confidence, wanting to change. Acceptance of a difference, being confident in yourself when others can’t. Respecting your own opinion so you can make better decisions. To be able to live life satisfied, to prevent depression, being able to accept yourself. / For the mirror assignment it makes you see that you are unique and special in your own way.
