Thanks to the foresight of Pendergast Elementary School

District and Arizona Department of Education for bring to us Character Education. This 2015- 2016 report reflects how the creative processes through the "Bridging Possibilities" and our Train the Trainer programs, enabling us to expand our reach to enlightened and enriched more youth. These results from 149 young lives and what they experienced together through the "Bridging Possibilities" Character Education program Demonstrating the power and importance of inspiring and empowering our youth with the essential tools so that they are able to make better life choices, find their gifts and know that they matter!

Allowing them to lead a more meaningful productive life and become tomorrow's leaders in Arizona and around the world, for a brighter tomorrow for all.

W

hat: Release the Fear, a non-profit health and human services organization, teaches Arizona’s youth the

life skills needed to combat the effects of Peer Pressure, Gang involvement, Bullying, Abuse, and Violence in our society and to make better life choices. Release the Fear (RTF) has worked with thousands of at-risk youth and adults in Arizona and around the world, offering experiential programs that help reverse the paralyzing effects of fear and diminished self-worth. Our programs encourage youth to explore safe and healthy lifestyles and to overcome disabilities through the development of leadership and social skills through evidence-based curriculum that meets National Common Core standards. H

ow: These programs stimulate whole-brain thinking and develop metacognitive thought processing by utilizing

new applied-knowledge teaching methods. These programs demonstrate options that awaken a creative consciousness and expose the unlimited potential of critical thinking and problem solving to help participants develop better cognitive behavioral skills. Our trained facilitators guide participants through interactive creative activities and analytically explore the connectedness to their lives. Release the Fear utilizes inquiry-based learning experiences, an educational practice where the teacher/facilitator uses controlled questioning to serve as a learning guide in order to move students towards new understandings. Educational research shows that student retention increases when new learning is discovered through inquiry practices, as the student is able to take ownership of these findings. The teacher/facilitator must act as guide while being an expert questioner, thinking of the end objective at all times and posing questions to allow students to reach objectives on their own. When this is done, students are able to create new thought patterns which connect and build on their applied knowledge and personal life goals.

Without these essential life skills, the still- maturing minds of detained youth view their future as bleak with no hope for a “normal” life.

A

pproach: Through experiential programs, we encourage participants to develop valuable core life skills, better

critical problem solving, and a healthy sense of understanding of self and others. Through the RTF programs, participants discover that anything is possible, that they have a purpose in life. They see why they do matter to the world, to the community, and most of all to themselves.

T

ransformation: The Maricopa County Juvenile Probation Office released a 2010 report demonstrating the value of

Inside Out Bridging Possibilities workshops on 357 of their juvenile population. Thirty percent of incarcerated youth recidivate—meaning three out of ten will again find themselves in conflict with law and society and back behind bars.

For the incarcerated youth who participated in just one Release the Fear workshop, that recidivism figure dropped by 23 percent. For those who were able to benefit from multiple workshops, it dropped by 16 percent nearly half. That is an impressive impact on any child’s future as well as the community in general..

Release the Fear, Inc. has worked with youth in Arizona and internationally, in such places as Guam and El Salvador, instilling positive life changes for thousands.

Average of 450-500 Arizona youth per year have found themselves in secure care or behind the fence at Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) Out of that a three year longitudinal study was conducted 2012-2015 on 928 youth that participated in the Release the Fear program.

For nine years, Release the Fear has had the opportunity to interact with over 8,500 troubled youth; these youth now know they have a life purpose. They know their wishes and dreams can come true. They know they are worth it and that they matter!

Our evidence-based curriculum has helped .

troubled kids in schools, jails, detention, and treatment centers. Through the creative processes of art, music, and communication, we teach kids cognitive behavioral skills to build self-esteem. They learn tools to help them succeed in school, conflict resolution, and to address peer pressure, and bullying.

Between the years 2007 and 2015, Release Fear has shown constant improvement upon youth’s pre- and post-reporting’s learned about perceptions of themselves.

In addition, during the years of 2012 and 2015, Release the Fear has contributed to an overall improvement of youth’s self-reported willingness to assist another if bullied. Despite a decline of reported learning’s about proactive options to prevent being bullied, their learning consistently remained over 78 percent.

Release the Fear’s mission, since 1996, is to counter the effects of violence in our communities by turning fear, anger, and hate into acceptance, hope, and self empowerment, bridging endless possibilities through the creative process.

Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

Participant Responses Participants are asked to reflect on several of the activities and then share with the group.

Who am I? : Honesty, learn more. Tell the truth. Ask nicely, speak up. Not steal, observing, jobs. / Being honest.

Reflective Take Away Assignment: Caring and trustworthy. You make more friends when you’re nice. In jobs nobody wants to be that guy. (That mean guy). We’ve learned by being a better person. It will help you become more confident and happy. It can help with bullying or help build a better friendship. Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

Who am I? : Responsible, kind, trustworthy. Being responsible to homework, more respectful to good. Stopping it, beat them up, tell them to stop. Being responsible and worth, live life, let it go on. / Basketball player, singer/actress, military, leader. GCU, ASU, ASU, ASU. Stop it, help it, tell an adult. Help, learn more. / Trustworthy, honest. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Ask for help, tell an adult. Lead to your goals, succeed in life. / To be more responsible. By being respectful. That they protect me. / My mom is a super mom. I think my hero is my mom because she helped with pushing me to be the best I could be and to put a roof over my head. / Super Mom. She is important because she takes care of me and she makes sure I’m successful. / Because they have supported me my whole life. / Family, dad, mom. Seeing Beyond: Using your imagination, looking at things in a different perspective. In science there is a hypothesis and to use an educated guess and imagination. To use your senses and like you being an author and an artist, you have to use your imagination. / Looking at staff in a different point of view. A little bit of every subject. In a job you have to use your imagination to try to get a better spot. / How to use your other sense.

Writing, reading, science, math, everything, every subject. When you are working, you have to use your imagination. / How you use other senses. Science we had to extract what the object is. Like if you have a present.

Drawing One’s Fears, Hopes, and Dreams and Sharing: Don’t stop following your dreams, keep going. It will help you get to your dream to go to college. It get to your fear and that is what is stopping your dream. It will build up and your dream will be on track and keeps your life organize. / Don’t let your fears stop you from reaching your goals. You know if you are doing good. You would not let them get in your way. The bully might have the same fear and not have the option of being at the same clear place we are so they force the fear on others, so they don’t think they’re alone. It might help your mind of what you want to go. / Don’t let your fear get in the way of your goals. You won’t get an education. Because they might have a fear. Try to stay positive and stay with your goals. / Don’t let your fear stop you from getting to your goal. If you stop going to school cause of bullying it will stop you by not achieving your goal. Stay positive and you will face your fear. It would get a good education if you get through your fears.

Reflective Take Away Assignment: Not everything is a negative experience. If you see something a bad thing it might not always. Just be a positive person, don’t look at everything negative. / You should try to see how the positive in the negative. In school it help put aside the drama and makes you enjoy the time you get. If something very bad happens, you know how to deal with it and you find out how to make the bad into a not so bad situation. / We learned how to follow expectations and how to talk when a group is up. Help be respectful to teachers.

Respect our elders. / We learned to do things more positively. Good for tests. Bad situations can be good once.

Describe a time when you had an experience that you perceived (thought/saw) as negative, but through time or something you did, you perceived (thought/saw) the experience as a positive one. I saw a homeless person with a baby. I felt so bad that she doesn’t have anything to give to that poor baby. It very sad to see that. I saw this lady give her child away to someone. That really made me cry. / I had bad grades on my report card and showed it to my dad and they weren’t that mad because I told the truth and didn’t lie about the grades so he wasn’t mad. P.S. I got math sheets to do but they were pretty easy. / I used to have a phone and go in bathroom and play on my phone because I was grounded. And now I don’t do it cause I’m grounded. / One time I was on the city bus and there was a old lady and the bus was full so she had to stand up and I felt bad for her so I got up and I let her sit down. / In December of 2015, I had to get 12 teeth extracted. I thought it was going to hurt super bad but actually I didn’t even feel it. Now my mouth is better. Well, better than it was. / I saw someone picking up trash to help the communities. / I lied to my mom. I thought I was going to be in trouble but I told her the truth and I wasn’t in trouble because I was respectful to her. / When I was younger, me and my brother Aiden were playing indoor baseball. We broke a glass lamp, but my mom didn’t care cause she bought a new one. / I broke a vase and I didn’t lie about it so I didn’t get in trouble. / From the start of this program I thought it was bad, but it turns out good. The negative part and why I think we were doing bad was because I had my friends in this class but then turns out fun and good. / At the beginning I was skiddish but now I’m used to it and like the program. / Responsibility. When I was responsible is when I went to work and I had to do truest. / When I came to the thing Release the Fear it was negative until the next day. / I helped an old man across the street, being respectful to our school, being kind to others. / When I was sick and my mom told me to get the bags out the car and it was a PS4.

Through stories, activities and artwork, Release the Fear’s Workshops will help students to:

Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

So I ate the candy and it ate it all and I got in trouble because my dad saw me and he got mad. / I remember a time where I wanted to go to Mexico but I had 2 options one of them was my education and the other one is my family. / When I wanted to get money from my parents to buy my self my favorite candy. / One time I was got to my soccer and I saw a soccer ball and I wanted to get it but my intuition said you should find the owner and give it back. / Years ago in a situation listening, when someone didn’t accept to come to this country. My intuition told me ask if I was able to take her place and since that day I am living is this country. / I saw a piece of candy and I saw my devil and my angel. I wasn’t listening to my good instinct and followed my bad feeling and I stole it. / When a jar is at the top of the big and tall box my inner voice tell me do not get it but I went for it and I got hit badly.

Mom. My mom has been through a lot in her life, but always comes out strong no matter the challenge she prevails. Honest, discipline, smart, caring, important, difficult, stubborn, amazing. / Mom. I think my hero is important because she takes care of me and buys things for me and pays for the house I live in. / I think that my hero is important because whenever I’m feeling down I know that I can always go to that person and they are always trying to get the best out of me because they know I can do good and I am very thankful for that. / My mom takes very good care of me! Seeing Beyond: We learned how to use our imaginative mind. Reading because when there’s no pictures in books, you have to imagine in your mind what’s happening. You have to picture yourself accomplishing your goals./ Harder to feel than to see. Make hypothesis and predictions. It helps you visualize your dreams.

My gut was telling me to stay with my first answer but I didn’t and then I got it wrong. The next day I didn’t listen and I went when I barely ate. That my inner voice does matter. / I remember when I felt like I had to clean my room and I went to go clean my room. I can learn from this situation by following your intuition or inner voice. / One time I followed my intuition when I went camping and sat down by the camp fire and I knew I was supposed to be a certain distance from the fire because it was hot. I learned from this situation by knowing that intuition can help you in other situations.

Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I? : Talk to each other and trust each other and we’re common. Make and help friend. Know you are not alone. Change the feeling the bully contains. It helps find new friends and coworkers during job. / To get to know each other. Connections with other people. Find stuff in common. Building bonds with many people. / We have similarities. We can make more friends. The person who is being bullied will probably stop. They know that we are not alone and lots of people are like you. / To be honest. If you’re honest other people will be honest.

Being honest to a lot and say your being bullied. That won’t be as many consequences.

Creative storytelling: Responsibility and if you don’t use it in your daily life it can turn out to be a mess. In school you can keep track of your grades to make sure you could get honor roll or a better reward. You can be responsible and set a program to try to stop bullying. In life your responsible you can get a job and get a house and many other things. / 6 pillars are important. Your life will be better everywhere. Show them the 6 pillars.

Better reputation. / It helps you speak out and be more confident. There’s a better chance of getting a good grade and a better education. It can help other people defend themselves when they get bullied because they can speak up. It applies in life because it helps you become more mature and you can be trustworthy. / To be caring.

Care for friends and teachers. If you caring to them that be caring to you. To learn to be caring to people even if they are not nice to you.

Through the Hoops: Teamwork, senses, look for guidance. Group work. Supports having friends to help you.

When you’re in danger you can use your senses to get out of it. / Teamwork, help yourself and others. The teamwork could affect the bully. There will be “hoops” in life. / We learned how to do teamwork, use senses, and look at other people. It’s easier because you have other friends that can help you. Working with others can be helpful to get rid of bullying. They know that people are not alone and working with others is better. / Learning

Reflective Take Assignment: Think about our self, family, friends, help. Find great friends. It helps to know it’s your personal opinion. Seeing Beyond: We learned how to be more descriptive. When you get in trouble & you have to go to a different class & you have to tell the teacher what you did. In life you have to be very descriptive of what you want to do.

For example, you have to be descriptive when someone asks you what you want to study in for college. / Descriptions matter. All subjects because everything needs more specific details. Describe what you want. / You can be more descriptive and creative. It applies in reading, writing, and science because when your teachers ask for your summary or essay you can explain it specifically. If you want a certain job you can describe what you want or what you need so it can be easier to inform others. / How to be descriptive. Help you describe what you need help with. With you trying to get a job.

Drawing One’s Fears, Hopes, and Dreams and Sharing: How to think of fears in a positive way. To work hard for your dream. To look at the positive side. So you know what you want to achieve. / It helped us to draw our fears, dream, and memory to make it better. Applies because it helps us with our dreams. He is an amazing football player. One of the best in history and he grew up in a dangerous neighborhood and family but he still pushed for success and that got me motivated so if I doubt myself, I ask myself “What would Adrian Peterson do.”

Because he gives people motivation to do things and inspires people to do things in the big world and that’s what makes me look up to him because most football players are jerks or always want to fight on the field. / Mom. She is my hero because I was made by her and she provided for me my whole life. / J.K. Rowling. She wrote for herself. Even after being rejected by tons of publishers, she kept trying. She didn’t let success change how she wanted things done. / He was in a helicopter shot down and he did crash. Because he help the country. / Alex Morgan is an American soccer player and Olympic gold medalist and won the FIFA World Cup. She is a forward for the Orlando Pride in the NWSL and the United States Women National Soccer. Shortly after graduating early from the University of California Berkeley where she played for women. I think she is important to me because she shows all the girls in the world that not only boys play soccer but girls can too! .

This workshop took place on June 8-9, 2016 - # 9 of 12 Pendergast Opening up possibilities for the young minds of Arizona’s youth for a brighter tomorrow.© “Bridging Possibility” workshops.

Through stories, activities and artwork, Release the Fear’s Workshops will help students to:

     

Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication Bridge Understanding Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I? : Honest. Telling the teacher the truth. Tell the teacher. Telling your boss the truth. / Common sense.

Read directions on the papers before you do. Tell an adult. Be successful without distractions. / Responsibility, respectful, safe, and hard work. Fit in and talk. Trust some friends. Creative story telling: We learned how to have citizenship. Wisdom and confidence to make more friends, and they will like for what you are. Everybody is equal. It’s helped by knowing no one is different. To your co-workers so they treat you the same.

Reflective Take Away Assignment: That just by looking in our own eyes. Having courage and confidence because of our accomplishments. Because you made positive decisions. Having the courage to speak up because of confidence. One could realize how much they accomplish it makes you feel great in different ways. / Selfconfidence. Be the best you. / Who our hero is and why they are our hero. So if someone was not good at something you can help them out. You can ask someone for help and calm down. The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I? : Speaking in front of others. If front of assemblies. Being upstanding. Presenting ideas to coworkers. / Can’t be shy. Presenting project, making new friends. Kids and people more often. Talking to people in school or jobs.

Creative story telling: We learned six pillar character counts. If somebody is not being respectful, they could miss something important. People will start to realize everyone should be treated the same. If you’re responsible you will be wanted in your job. If not things will be terrible. / Getting a better understanding in a fun way. Makes the activities more fun. You can be able to give presentations on why to stop bullying. To embrace your ideas to others and help them understand it.

Reflective Take Away Assignment: You can learn acceptance for who you are. You don’t have to change who you are. It’ll help respect your decisions. Growing up and still being you. / How to appreciate yourself more. When you are being bullied you know not to believe what they say. Whatever you do you are you. If you’re a girl and has been working longer than someone and they get paid more.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I? : Honesty, Vulnerable, Honest Feelings. Getting to know classmates, make a game. Teachers about bully, speak up, know about bullying in past. Strengthen how to stand up to bullies. Do with family, build confidence, surprised by other people history or actions. See how people feel scared to be judged. Learned to portray character traits. / We are alike and different. Think differently. How skin color is different from other people. Knowing people that are alike.

Creative story telling: Sympathy towards others. Subs, students, staff, show people how they look. Show how to be respectful to adults and parents. Show others how to be respectful. / We learned how to work with others and helping them. Help teachers and classmates. Not listening to a bully and not be a bully. By helping other people and what they need help on.

Reflective Take Away Assignment: Give ourselves positive praise, reflect on yourself/day, heros are people you admire/love and want to follow in their footsteps. Teacher, Think positive before a test, ask for help, study.

Don’t think too much, less likely to take things to heart, walk away. Show family and friends good attitude, positive at work and at school, push yourself to succeed, don’t overthink. / We have to have hope to reach our dreams. It will push you to complete our dreams. Help people to be confident. Your friends are pushing you to do something you don’t want to do. Self confidence helps you reach your goals.

Mirror Work: Look at Yourself in the eyes (ONLY) and tell yourself that you love or like yourself just the way you are: It makes me feel nice and happy about myself. / That I like myself because I am a good helper to my dad. Hero: Who is Your Hero and Why do you think are they important? What characteristics or qualities, would you or do you, look for in a Hero? My mom because she helps me with everything I need and when I need it. She gave me life and with her I wouldn’t exist. / My mom. She is smart but is not given credit for it. Most giving and loving woman. Somehow figures out how to do everything and make it look awesome. / Older brother. Helps me anytime. / My mom. She helps me learn new things or sports. / My dad. Through the Hoops: Skills or Tools Learned: Trusting each other, learn from other people. Working with others, share qualities. Cheering them up. Take them away from situation. Asking for help, relying on peoples help.

The students are asked to reflect on the following question: How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I? : Support, teamwork, communication. Helping others. Tell an adult. Communicate with others to reach your goals. / The skill that we learned is to be more open and social. When we would do school projects.

We could tell the bully to stop. We could meet more people and our jobs.

Creative Storytelling: Creative, perseverance, teamwork. Game, thinking of others. More people, less bullying. Being a good person. / A skill we learned was to be fair. To not be judgmental to anyone. It would stop bullying because no one would be judging anybody. We would apply it in life by treating everybody equally.

Through the Hoops: Work as a team, communication. Doing a group project. Helping the victim of bullying. By dealing with problems. / We learned how to communicate and work together. Group projects and homework. All of our friends can prevent it. When we have obstacles and have to get through them.

Mirror Work: Looking at myself in the mirror saying that “I love myself for who I am” makes me feel a lot more confident about myself. This activity helps me realize that I shouldn’t care that much about what people think of me. I should care more of what I think of myself. / Different. / It makes me feel great. When I do the mirror work, I feel better. So if I feel sad because someone made fun of me, it will let me know that you should be thankful for yourself. / It makes me feel good about myself and it makes me feel loved. When I do that I don’t have as much low self-esteem and it brings my self-esteem up. It makes me feel way more confident. / It makes me feel like if I’m in a happy place and that’s where I’m meant to be. / Proud of myself, happy, helpful. / Unique, special, good, proud. / At first I was like okay, so what. But when it was the third time, I really started to believe it.

Hero: My parents are and will always be my heroes because they are in my life on a daily basis. My parents also make me feel important and loved. My parents are important because they love me for who I am from being serious to goofy and annoying. / Victor Frankenstein. I think Frankenstein is important because even when he knew he could die or be arrested, he never gave up trying. / I think that Albert Einstein is important because he was the smartest person to ever set foot on Earth. Within out him we probably never find the equation to the speed of light. / Mum, Nayla (sister), Calum Hood (singer, bassist in SOS). Mum: She is loving, caring, hard working, the best person you’ll meet. Nayla: Awesome, funny, cool, hard working, very intelligent, my best friend. Colum: The love of my life. The person I adore the most. Cute, funny, sweet. Just best person ever. They are important because they saved me from my troubles and helped me out. They were always there for me when I needed a shoulder to cry on or a person to talk to. They will always live in my heart and I’ll always be thankful for them. / My dad is my hero because he is kind, smart, happy, and I love him. He is important because he is part of my family. / Dad. My dad is my hero because he help me through hard times and helps me pay for food if needed. He’s there when needed. / My mom is important to me because she cares for me. Also she has made me who I am. / My hero is my mom. She is my hero because she supports me in anything that I do. She makes sure I am good. She is important because she makes sure I have clean clothes to wear. She makes sure I am fed. She is the one who supports me in everything that I do.

Helps with anger issues. / We learned how to love ourselves for who we are. We won’t be afraid to show who we really are. We wouldn’t feel judged, but confident instead.
