It is not hard to believe the incredible events at Release the Fear since the RTF Sculpture was unveiled in 2005 in Phoenix. And here it is 6 years later……

The energy and synergy at RTF has been focused on our many programs since then. These programs work with youth in schools and correctional facilities to help them “Release their Fears” and instill in them the hope for the future, all through creative and educational experiences.

And what pride we have in our new location at Grace Chapel in downtown Phoenix. I will always remember the fun and sweat the RTF Board and Friends employed to make it a first-class place to visit, especially on First Fridays. It was the same energy and commitment that made the Sculpture possible.

This is an organization which is grass-roots, committed, dynamic, growing and very special. How can we thank Robert Miley, our Founder and Artistic Director? We can’t. It is his vision and perseverance that has driven all of us to success. Helping youth has always been the glue to our energy and commitment to RTF. But I also want to recognize the hands-on work of the Board of Directors and the Advisory Board to also move our mission to fruition. RTF was an infant 6 years ago…..please join us in our future development as we grow!

Anti-Bullying & Conflict Resolution Education = Life Skills for Disadvantaged Youth

What: Release the Fear, a non-profit health and human services organization, teaches Arizona’s

youth the life skills needed to combat the effects of peer pressure, bullying, abuse and violence in our society and learn to make better life choices. Release the Fear has worked with thousands of at-risk youth in Arizona to decrease the enticement of gang involvement by offering experiential programs that help reverse the paralyzing effects of fear and diminished self-worth. Our programs encourage youth to explore safe and healthy lifestyles and to overcome disabilities through the development of leadership and social skills through evidence-based curriculum meeting Arizona education standards.

How:

These programs stimulate whole-brain thinking and develop metacognitive thought processing by utilizing new applied-knowledge teaching methods. These programs demonstrate options that awaken a creative consciousness and expose the unlimited potential of critical thinking and problem solving to help participants develop better cognitive behavioral skills Our trained facilitators guide participants through interactive creative activities and analytically explore the connectedness to their lives. Release the Fear utilizes inquiry-based learning experiences. Inquirybased learning is an educational practice where the teacher/facilitator uses controlled questioning to serve as a learning guide in order to move students toward new understandings. Educational research shows that student retention increases when new learning is discovered through inquiry practices, as the student is able to take ownership of these findings. The teacher/facilitator must act as guide while being an expert questioner, thinking of the end objective at all times and posing questions to allow students to reach objectives on their own. When this is done, students are able to create new experiences which connect and build on their applied knowledge and personal life goals. Without these essential life skills, the still-maturing minds of detained youth view their future as bleak with no hope for a “normal” life.

Approach: Through experiential programs, we encourage participants to develop valuable core life skills, better critical problem solving, and a healthy sense of understanding self and others. Through the RTF programs, participants discover that anything is possible, that they have a purpose in life, and why they matter to the world, to the community, and most of all to themselves.

Transformation:

The Maricopa County Juvenile Probation Office released a 2010 report demonstrating the value of Inside Out: Bridging Possibilities workshops on their juvenile population.

Thirty percent of incarcerated youth recidivate—meaning three out of ten will again find themselves in conflict with law and society and back behind bars. For the incarcerated youth who participated in just one Release the Fear workshop, that recidivism figure dropped by 23 percent. For those who were able to benefit from multiple workshops, it dropped by 46 percent—nearly half. That is an impressive impact on any child’s future.

Release the Fear, Inc. has worked with youth in Arizona and internationally, in such places as Guam and El Salvador, instilling positive life changes for thousands.

How Our Dedicated Volunteers View the Work

I volunteered for Release the Fear this past summer at Estrella Jail.

We worked with the juvenile girls that were awaiting sentencing. I had no idea what to expect going into the three day workshop but I came out with a new perspective and appreciation for the smaller things in life. I met several girls, each with their own fears, dreams, and reservations. I could tell they were hesitant at first to the process of opening up and sharing their feelings. It was amazing to witness their transformation from day 1 to day 3. Each exercise brought them more and more together and also revealed their own individual strengths. Dreams were being dreamt and goals were being realized. Beauty salon owners, cosmetologists, doctors, and pharmacy technicians were all being born at Estrella. The organization helped each girl realize what their true goals were in life. The workshop not only helped them to realize that there is a bright and colorful world to be lived outside of those walls, but also that their dreams ARE possible to attain. Just because they call it a dream, does not make it unrealistic. I cannot think of a more deserving organization than Release the Fear. The organization can truly impact thousands of people’s lives. Showing someone the light when all they see is darkness is truly a gift and that is what Robert does for every person he helps; he gives them the gift of light. I am truly blessed to have been given the opportunity to witness it.

The effectiveness of Release the Fear’s workshops on the reduction of recidivism rate for the period of March 2009 thru March 2010 Statistics from Maricopa County’s Juvenile Probation Department demonstrate that, while the overall recidivism of incarcerated youth hovers around 30%, youth participating in one IOBP workshop recidivate only 22.8% of the time, and those participating in multiple IOBP workshops recidivate at only 16.2%. Due to the rippling effects of IOBP and similar workshops, we have learned that seven times the number of participants realizes positive impact because of the workshops.

Vanderbilt University researcher Mark A. Cohen recently revised earlier (1998) estimates of the value of saving a high-risk youth. By age 18, Dr. Cohen now estimates the value as $2.6 to $5.3 million at age 18, clearly demonstrating the valuable economic impact of Release the Fear’s IOBP workshops and recidivism rates.

hese measurements demonstrate a change in participants awareness, knowledge, skill, behavior,

choices and actions. Besides the Pre and Post quantifying results of the “Bridging Possibilities” programs, we also engage participants in a group reflection after each exercise. Besides the findings of how these exercises will help them in their daily lives at home or school, there are many subtle yet significant impacts we deliver through the programs. For instance, students taking turns being team leaders to abstract inquiry from their peers. For some of these participants, it is the first time in their life they had to take on this role as leader and /or even communicate on that level. They share with us that this helps them with their own confidence and the understanding of others.

We also give reflective take away assignments day one of the workshop and also day two. These assignments our given to strengthen what the participants have experienced from that day, as tools and thought to carry them forward into the following day and share with their peers their findings.

After day one for example: Mirror work: Look at Yourself in the eyes and tell yourself that you love or like yourself just the way you are. Write in a couple of words, how does it make you feel?

WHO IS YOUR HERO, Someone World-Famous or Someone You Know, or anyone in between?

First do a Drawing of Your Hero on the Back, then write about them. Why do you think they are important? Many incredible revelations come from this reflective assignment. One particular participant at one of the detention centers shared with our trainer Michael; This student was a big 17-year-old guy, who said that he boxed in high school.

Michael asked him how the mirror work made him feel?

He replied;” tickle”, Michael asked, what do you mean tickle?

He said when he looked in the mirror, and said those words “I like you or love you just the way you are”, he got a tickle. He said, ”he realized that he always wanted someone to say those words to him his whole life and realized he can say them to himself.”

All the students are encouraged to continue this twice a day for one-week to assess the difference of how they feel about themselves.

The other part of this assignment is to identify your Hero, many of them, for the first time are able to identify someone close to them that they consider a Hero.

The balance of this assignment, after the sharing with group the next day is to share with the person that they’ve never shared with that they there are their Hero. Many of the heroes are moms and dads, brothers and sisters... they according to majority of participants, never heard that they were their hero.

This long term Bridging of understanding of their supporters/hero’s is instrumental to help carry experiences of this workshop forward.

Because young people are usually thought of only as individuals receiving services, we often forget that many youth are also capable of giving something back to a program or organization. Activities such as youth leadership programs, parent and youth advisory councils, and mentorship’s give both youth and parent the opportunity to participate in programs in ways that help them and others reach their personal and professional goals. As demonstrated in the Mikayla’s story, shared success story from this program.

Release the Fear, Inc. – Inside-Out -The Bridging of Possibilities

Why this program services important and what they mean to the Community.

Ray, a 2007 graduate of a Release the Fear’s Inside-Out: Bridging Possibilities workshop, was recently interviewed for a promotional video for Release the Fear, Inc. (RTF). At 15, he had watched as his cousin was murdered for drug money. At 17, he participated in the workshop.

In his interview, unscripted, he said, “Before taking the workshop, I didn’t really pay attention to the name Release the Fear.

I had that mentality – I thought, what fear? I’m not scared of nothin’.

Then I went in there and realized I’m scared of more than I think. I was actually scared of people. I realize that now. So I’ve actually learned how to be more sociable, because there’s a lot of conversing and social networking in that class – it’s a lot of ‘hands-on’ and togetherness.

“Since the program, I realize what I can do, and I have confidence in that. Release the Fear made me realize that I can go as far as I want to – I just have to do it. I have a job and I have goals. I have a strong relationship with my son. And I’m going to have good advice for him, because my experiences with Release the Fear gave me wisdom that I can share with him.”

Ray is not a composite of a Release the Fear client. Ray is a real person. At 22, he is a provider and a writer. Each morning, he uses the public transportation system to travel from his home in Goodyear to his work in Mesa at a call center. He returns each night to spend time with his son and read to him. Then he writes poetry, goes to bed and begins again the next day. And Ray does this with hope and with confidence that he is creating a better life for himself and his son.

Ray now believes HE AND HIS SON, HAVE A FUTURE.
