Grethe Balle's 100th anniversary

Grete Balle is a Danish artist, known especially for her textile works and colorful paintings, which combine abstract forms with poetic elements. For more than half a century, she has explored color, form, and materials, often with a playful, almost lyrical approach that makes her works both decorative and thought-provoking. She is particularly known for her woven rugs –large, tactile works where threads, texture, and tone blend into vibrant compositions. Each rug tells its own story: about the rhythms of nature, about human relationships, and about the places we move through every day. She has had significant exhibitions in both galleries and museums in Denmark and is recognized for putting her personal mark on Danish art from the 1960s onward.

Grete Balle celebrates her 100th anniversary in 2026 with a series of exhibitions including in Kalundborg, Copenhagen, Silkeborg, and on Lolland:

Cozy provincial towns

Høng is the second largest town in Kalundborg Municipality. Here you will find a shopping center with several grocery stores and chain shops, and you can take the local train to Slagelse – or to Tølløse. Høng has several educational institutions, including Høng Gymnasium and HF and the Zealand Agricultural School, as well as a continuation school.

The village of Løve, a few kilometers from Høng, can boast an impressive and wellmaintained Dutch windmill, which has set opening days throughout the summer. There is also a thingstead here, where disputes were settled in the old days, and the town also offers the Rose Plant Nursery, which is owned and operated by Torben Thim.

In Gørlev, the former sugar beet factory is the town's landmark. One of the former buildings now houses FermHub Zealand, which is an internationally oriented industrial biofermentation platform, aimed at helping startups, knowledge institutions, and established companies working with biosolutions.

The active business association in Gørlev organizes eight market days every year throughout the summer at the town square, where there is music, a good atmosphere, and the sale of the classic 'black herring,' a local specialty.

Twice a year, in week 27 and week 37, two large horse and flea markets are held at Søkrogen 4, attracting thousands of visitors.

The music café in Gørlev

In Gørlev, there is an old cinema building that has long since ceased to function as a cinema. But in 1982, a group of volunteers started founding a music association, Musik Caféen, and in 1987 they were able to move into the old cinema building. Since then, 10-15 concerts and events have been held there. The building also houses Gørlev Film Club, as well as Gørlev Pensioners' Association.

At Musik Caféen, you can experience Amin Jensen on May 29, Creedence Experience on August 28, and Marie Frank playing on September 25.

Kirke Helsinge

Friends of Kirke Helsinge Sports Club hold a large – and very well-attended – flea market every year in July at the town's sports field. Throughout the year, volunteers collect items, and when the ribbon around the sports field is lowered exactly at 1 p.m., people rush in, eager to find unique and distinctive items.

This year, the flea market will be held on Saturday, July 18.

Gørlev Dog Forest

At the end of Rørmosevej, you will find Gørlev Dog Forest. Here you can walk your dog, and it has the opportunity to play with other dogs. The area is owned by Kalundborg Municipality but is managed by volunteers.

Just after the dog forest, you will find the trail that goes around Gørlev Lake. The dog forest was inaugurated in March 2020.

Gørlev Sea

Gørlev Lake has over the years received a wealth of facilities. Here you will find a shelter site with a fire pit, grill and benches, a nature playground and a boardwalk, as well as a handicap-friendly multi-toilet.

The walk around the lake is 700 meters and has varying surfaces. The route starts and ends with a bridge right by Gørlev Dog Forest, and you walk both on a gravel path and on a boardwalk, where you will also find tables and benches as well as a floating dock with a tackle box, where you can try to catch small creatures in the lake.

Høng Exercise park

In Høng, there is a well-stocked library, and in connection with the library, there is a playground that is suitable for small children. Here you can find a small zip line, sensory swings, a Tarzan course, and various fitness machines that adults can enjoy. There is also a campfire hut, and if you like climbing, you will also find a climbing wall in Høng Culture and Movement Park.

The People's Meeting in Høng

Every last Saturday in August, you can experience a genuine people's meeting when the area in and around Høng Center is transformed into a people's meeting. Here, a voluntary association has for the past ten years organized a people's meeting with plenty of debates and current topics.

The people's meeting is also a showcase for the associations in Kalundborg Municipality, which have booths at the people's meeting.

This year, the people's meeting will take place on Saturday, August 29.

Oplev Café Liv og Det skæve Folkekøkken

In Høng, you can find two completely unique dining establishments. Namely Café Liv and Det skæve Folkekøkken, which are located just a few hundred meters apart.

At both establishments, young people with developmental disabilities work, having a meaningful and exciting workplace here.

Café Liv is decorated in a very special way, styled like 'grandma's living room.' Here, all tables are set with lovely tablecloths, coffee sets, and cutlery, most of which come from recycling. The address is Hovedgaden 18.

Just around the corner, at Østergade 4, lies Det skæve Folkekøkken in the old canteen of the now unfortunately burned-down Vilhelm Petersen Machine Factory. Here, you pick up your food at the counter in true canteen style.

Løve Mill

The history of Løve Mill goes back a long way. The first mill is dated back to 1861, but the mill burned down in 1881 and was rebuilt the same year. In 2013, an extensive renovation began, which lasted for several years. Behind Løve Mill, there are a number of volunteers who tirelessly work to preserve and operate the mill.

Throughout the summer, the mill is open, where you can see it in operation if there is enough wind. Children can grind their own flour on small mills.

It is possible to purchase the mill's own flour. Every year a well-attended Christmas market is held, and it is also possible, by appointment, to visit the mill outside normal opening hours. Read more: loevemoelle.dk

Tingstedet i Løve

In the old days, people gathered at the assembly sites to settle important matters and disputes. Within a square of large stones, the assembly men sat on planks, while others stood outside and stepped in when they were to speak. The assembly sites were often sheltered outside the village, preferably by a mound – as at Løve, where the mound, however, disappeared in 1909 after gravel excavation.

The Løve Hundred assembly was moved several times: in 1685 to Sæbygård, in 1752 back to Løve, and in 1839 to Høng, where it was accommodated in the newly built courthouse by the village pond.

Today, the old assembly site in Løve is a tourist destination with memorials for the region’s prominent persons. Through QR codes, one can hear their stories, presented by the Local History Association in Høng. Here there are also tables and benches, so one can enjoy a packed lunch surrounded by fields and birdsong.

Roser in Løve

At Plantevej 3 there is a Rose Nursery www.roses.dk. Here you will find a collection of over 1,000 different roses as well as sales of perennials, climbing plants, bushes and trees, garden equipment, books, and much more. There is also a visitor garden and a rose garden with, among other things, wild roses, historic roses, climbing roses, and modern park and bed roses.

Ring riding in Løve

An old tradition is upheld in Løve. Every year, ring riding is held here with participation from both local riders and those coming from outside, competing to knock down the small rings.

This year, ring riding takes place on Saturday, August 15 at 1 PM in Vestre Løve.

Kløvertrails starting in Høng

On Rosenvænget, on the way to Høng Hallen, is the starting point for 4 hiking trails around the area.

Skolestien is the green route of 2.7 km, which passes by 6 schools, Høng Ting- og Arresthus, the village pond, and Høng Main Street.

Bystien is the blue route of 5 km, which mainly goes through Høng town and to Høng Forest. Skovstien is the red route of 7.5 km, which goes through the entire Høng Forest and along Bødstrup Stream.

Løvestien is the black route of 10 km. This route is called Løvestien because the trail, among other things, goes to the district town of Løve. A large part of the hike takes place on trails in Høng as well as in the open countryside, where the route passes close to Finderup Church. The hike goes, among other things, along the Ho Chi-Minh trail, Kirkestien, and Hemod Lannung's trail.

Nostalgic train ride through West Zealand

Vestsjællands Veteran Train kicks off the 2026 season with a spring excursion on May 3 between Høng and Tølløse.

The association consists of volunteers of all ages who restore and maintain carriages, locomotives, and the veteran railway throughout the year.

During the season, family-friendly trips are arranged such as the Summer Train, Madam Blå Train, the Halloween Train, and Santa's Train.

The five-kilometer stretch between Høng and Gørlev is Zealand's only standard-gauge veteran railway outside the commercial railway network – and Denmark's first veteran railway on a former DSB line.

The association has run veteran trains here since 1993, when the railway was still owned by DSB, and every summer the trips attract many happy passengers.

Reersø

Reersø Ornum

Reersø - and surroundings

Close to Reersø, you can find Bjerge Beach, which is a large summer house area. Here there are two campsites and a wellvisited pub.

Reersø is a very special area. Reersø was, in fact, an island until the 1600s, but today it is connected to the rest of Zealand by land.

Reersø is particularly known for the story of when Queen Margrethe I shipwrecked north of Reersø and washed ashore on a plank. Here she was received by the local farmer Hans Hansen, who, without knowing her identity, gave her shelter for three days.

Only when Hansen drove her to Kalundborg Castle did the queen reveal who she was. As a thank you for this exceptional hospitality, she exempted Reersø from tithe tax and gave the islanders a large meadow area at Ornum - exactly the place where she and Hansen had rested during the journey.

On Reersø, you can find several dining options: Café Vilhelm, Café Vejlen, Café Woey Woey, and the old, fine Reersø Inn, which is strategically placed right across from Reersø Church.

Reersø is also known for hosting many artists who live and exhibit in Reersø. There is also a cozy harbor, a campsite with many activities, and a small harbor museum.

In Reersø, there are a large number of listed houses. Here you can find Reersø Museum or Andræjs House, which was established in 1926 in a leasehold house and describes rural life for poor people in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Around Reersø

Reersø is a unique peninsula with lots of history and exciting places to visit. There are several places to eat and a very special town environment with many protected houses and many small cozy flea markets.

But the nature is also something special. You can walk around Reersø - a trip of eight kilometers, which offers steep cliffs and a rich birdlife. Along the way, you will pass several good fishing spots and bathing beaches.

Why are there tailless cats on Reersø?

In addition to beautiful nature and a cozy environment with a harbor, inn, and campsite, Reersø is also known for its tailless cats. The story goes that a ship from the Isle of Man, where they have tailless cats, was shipwrecked off Reersø, and only the ship's cat made it ashore and became the ancestor of Reersø's tailless cats. They are known for being strongly built with short noses and long hind legs.

Susanne Anker - local artist

At Fyrreleddet by Dalby Beach lies Anker's House. The artist Susanne Anker lives here, and she has done so for several years. She has transformed her home into a gallery where people can come and get inspired.

It is open by appointment, and visitors are welcome both as individuals or as groups.

Susanne Anker's works, which often have nature themes, are an integral part of the home's decor, and on the garage wall there is a large colorful floral motif, serving as an eye-catcher for the artist's work.

Completely free shelter spot at Preben's

Preben Kristensen has established a truly wonderful shelter site in connection with his home close to Dalby Beach. Here you can stay overnight for free in the shelters, of which there are several on the site; one is even located high up in a tree.

The site also has a unique caravan where you can also stay overnight if you have small children with you, or if the weather is bad. The site also has a real outhouse.

Mullerup Harbor

Mullerup Harbor is a beautiful small harbor on the west-facing Great Belt coast. The harbor is relatively sheltered, without major current and wave impact.

The marina has space for 92 pleasure boats. It was founded in 1838 and has over the years undergone extensive renovation and today appears as a modern, privately owned harbor that can serve boat owners, anglers, and others connected to the water.

And when hunger strikes, help is quite close. At Skipperkroen, one can choose from many different dishes throughout the year. In addition, the lovely beach, a nice playground, and a mini-golf course also contribute to making Mullerup Harbor a popular destination.

The Tissø area

Tissø, originally Tyr's Lake, is one of Denmark's largest freshwater lakes. It was formed during the melting of the Ice Age. Archaeological excavations around the lake have revealed traces of humans dating back to the Iron Age and the Viking Age.

Many of the finds can today be seen at Kalundborg Museum and at the Tissø Viking Center in St. Fuglede. The Viking Center is simultaneously an ideal starting point for hiking and cycling trips in the scenic area collectively called Naturpark Åmosen. It is possible to cycle all the way around Tissø, and along the way, one can take a detour to Klinteskoven. Here, one can find, among other things, the remains of a former pike hatchery, the old inn Klintehuset, and an old ice cellar.

East of Tissø are several excursion destinations: Denmark's oldest functioning country inn Bromølle Kro, Kattrup Manor and the surrounding forests, the village of Buerup with its own brewery and handicrafts - and a fine church - Birkegården's beautiful gardens as well as the two hills Ørnebjerg and Kløveshøj, from where there is a great view over the landscape.

You can also visit Sæby Church with frescoes dating all the way back to the 12th-13th century. The frescoes depict scenes from the New Testament, virtues and vices, creation and the fall of man, as well as Judgment Day.

Ruds

Buerup Church

Buerup Church was built in 1887 by landowner Christian Selchau of Selchausdal and donated to the residents of the northern part of Sæby Parish. The church was municipally owned from 1887 to 1969, when it became privately owned. In 1920, Buerup was separated from Sæby as an independent parish.

The church is located in a beautifully hilly landscape on land donated by landowner Frederik E.H. Bernstorff-Mylius of Kattrup. The church is constructed of red bricks according to designs by architect Vilhelm Klein and consists of a tower, a nave with slightly projecting transepts, and a chancel with an apse to the east. The building is characterized by a mixture of styles, seeking inspiration from medieval Romanesque and Gothic church architecture. The pointed tower is characteristic of 19th-century church construction in Denmark.

Blueberry Farm Café

A couple of kilometers from Reerslev along Tranemosevej, close to the Ice Age Route, you will find Blueberry Farm Café, which in season also has a blueberry field where you can go out and pick the fine berries.

Blueberry Farm Café was born out of a vision to create a place where nature, food, music, and community can meet. Therefore, musician Shane Donnelly and Frederikke Tom-Petersen converted two existing barn wings into a café and music venue, where you can experience a combination of country pub atmosphere with café coziness and self-picked blueberries.

The season starts in March – it is open every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on the first Sunday of each month there is music. During the summer holidays, there are extended opening hours. Events and activities are posted on the website and on Facebook.

Fugledegård Tissø Viking Center

On the west shore of Tissø lies Fugledegård, which today is set up as a nature and information center. The area is open to the public, and there are both shelters and a birdwatching tower in the area, as well as a bird hide and a 'creepy-crawly' area right down by the water's edge. There is also the possibility to eat your packed lunch. Between the years 550-1050, one of Denmark's richest settlements was located here. One of the finds made at the site is a 1.8-kilogram neck ring, which, along with other finds, can be seen in Fugledegård's exhibition.

In the main building, you will also find a café, a shop, and teaching and meeting rooms, and there are regularly various activities, such as Viking days. Read more at: fugledegaard.dk

Nature park Åmosen

Nature Park Åmosen in West Zealand extends from the Great Belt to Store Åmose between Sorø and Kalundborg and offers both magnificent nature and stories from all of Denmark's history, especially around Tissø. Here, there are several birdwatching towers where you can see sea eagles, kingfishers, and cranes.

In the middle of Åmosen, between Løjesmølle Forest and Grundmosegård, there are three shelters with compost toilets where you can stay overnight for free – remember to bring your own water.

If you follow the Jyderup Path from Skellebjerg towards Jyderup, the shelters are a perfect stop. The nights can be cold, but a fire box provides warmth, and the morning brings birdsong, the brew of the bog woman, and a sky painted orange by the sun.

At Tissø, you can also visit the Fugledegård Interpretive Center, which offers nature experiences for the whole family and is located along the Sjællandsleden hiking and cycling route.

Nature Park Åmosen was the first nature park to be branded with the Danish Nature Parks label.

Gubbestenen at Klovby

The Gubbe Stone at Klovby near Ubby resembles a sliced bread roll standing on its end. The stone's full size beneath the surface is unknown, but it has a circumference of 11 meters, is four meters long, and rises two meters into the air.

According to legend, the Gubbe Stone was thrown by a troll or witch at Ubby Church and bears the giant's scratch marks.

The stone arrived here at the end of the last Ice Age, when the ice sheet advanced from the Baltic Sea area. Therefore, the stone's place of origin can be sought in the granite bedrock there.

The Gubbe Stone is located on privately cultivated land without public access, but it can be seen from the gravel tracks across the open fields between Sandagergård and Vibehøjgård east of Klovby.

The hiking and cycling path Værslevstien passes a few hundred meters east of the stone.

Reerslev Smithy - a working workshop

Tissø Flea market

Tissø Kræmmermarked is located at Sæbyvej 48. The place has been around for over 20 years and has a wide selection of stands. There are several large halls in use, and here you will find everything you didn't know you couldn't do without.

The Ice Age Route winds through Northwest Zealand and passes through the village of Reerslev, which is located about 15 kilometers from Jyderup. Here you will find Reerslev Smedje, a blacksmith's site worthy of preservation from the late 18th century, which functioned as the town's village blacksmith's shop until 2006.

Today, the blacksmith's shop is owned by a nonprofit association, where a group of volunteers continues to run the shop as a working museum.

When you enter the blacksmith's old, green gate and feel the coal smoke stinging your nostrils, you are back in time around 1950, where the blacksmith in the dark swings the large hammer against the glowing iron on the anvil, so that the sparks fly and the sound fills the room.

While the blacksmith heats the iron, the blacksmith's volunteers are ready to share stories with you about hard, harsh days, about joys and hardships.

The forge also has a small museum shop with blacksmith items and local specialties, and we almost always have coffee on the pot.

The first opening day is Sunday, May 3, 2026, when the forge will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. On this day you can also meet all the dedicated volunteers who make it possible for the blacksmith museum to open its doors and preserve an important part of our cultural heritage.

The season ends on November 1. Admission is free.

Tissø Kræmmermarked is open every Sunday all year round from 10 am to 3 pm.

Bike race Whit Saturday

The Tissø Rundt cycle race was a legendary race, in which a large number of companies from large parts of Kalundborg Municipality participated, and where the cyclists showed up dressed up and with pimped-up bicycles.

That part is a thing of the past, but a few years ago a local cycling club, Event4Cykling, teamed up with SuperBrugsen to revive the cycle race. It became two routes: One of 24 kilometers around Tissø, and a longer one of 80 kilometers, which went far and wide in the beautiful West Zealand landscape.

The race started in Gørlev, and when SuperBrugsen closed and Netto moved in, Event4Cykling reached an agreement with Netto to hold the race, which always takes place on Whit Saturday. This year it falls on May 23. Register here: event4cykling.dk/nettoloebet
