Kestell bookshop owner’s murder case involves minors KESTELL: Four suspects arrested in connection with the murder of a well-known Kestell bookshop owner, Johann Ramage, involved two minors. Police spokesperson, Loraine Earle, says the suspects, aged between 15 and 46, were arrested yesterday and are expected to appear in court soon. The suspects from Tlholong Township outside of Kestell, were arrested in Kestell and Harrismith. The 77-yearold bookshop owner’s body was found last week in his house at the back of his shop. He had multiple stab wounds and a wound to the head.

items stolen have also been recovered, however, cannot reveal what they are, pending investigations. The body of Ramage had been discovered by community members. She said when community members who usually bought newspapers from him noticed that he was not at his post, as usual, they went to look for him and found that a window was forced open and he was lying dead on the floor. Ramage was staying alone with his dog. Acting Provincial Commissioner, Tholie Afonso, has condemned the incident and applauded the police for the arrest.

Doctor Dokter Hippocratic oath Hippocrates of Kos is commonly known as the “Father of Medicine”. He was the son of Hippocrates I. He founded the Hippocratic School of Medicine in ancient Greece. He established medicine as a profession. The Hippocratic Oath was coined by Hippocrates and required a level of chastity, charity and swearing to pagan gods.

Many would argue that it is not relevant to modern medicine and most doctors do not take this or any other oath. There are derivatives of this oath that are taken by medical graduates in some medical schools. Several requirements and prohibitions of the oath poses problems for the modern medical profession. The oath prohibits the use of a “knife” which is a key instrument in everyday medical practice. It requires doctors to swear by the Greek gods. Doctors may not treat close relatives or sexual partners, which many doctors do. The oath is also a potentially binding contract, which in the current legislation-heavy society could be another avenue for dissatisfied patient to sue the doctor.

Medical doctors are already starting to practice medicine in a defensive way as to avoid malpractice lawsuits. Medical malpractice has become a big problem for doctors in South Africa, where certain specialities already see doctors leaving their profession due to excessive medical indemnity insurance and the risk of humiliation.

The future of medical oaths Physicians oaths are meant to provide ethical and moral guidance. A generalised oath is probably inadequate due to the number and diversity of medical specialities in modern medicine. Dr. Howard Markel recently noted: “It is unlikely to become superannuated. It serves as a powerful reminder and declaration that we are all a part of something infinitely larger, older, and more important than a particular specialty or institution . The need for physicians to make a formal warrant of diligent, moral, and ethical conduct in the service of their patients may be stronger than ever.”

Die geleentheid raak jaarliks net groter en die organiseerders het weer die jaar nie teleur gestel nie. Volgende week Vrydag tree Steve Hofmeyr op. Zak Steyn en Francios Bouwer tree ook op asook weer op Saterdag aand. Die doel van Agri dag is Om fondse Nou ja, daar is die derde Maandag van die jaar al terug te ploeg in die gemeenskap van Clocolan. Instansies in die Clocolan soos byvoorbeeld die amper verby. Op die eerste Maandag het ons Ouetehuis, Skool, Kleuterskool, Kinderhuis, en verskeie ander instansies wat finansieele bystand almal vir mekaar allerhande mooi seëninge toegewens vir die nuwe jaar. Ingredients 1 cup uncooked rice 2 1/2 cups shredded chicken breast (I used a Rotisserie Chicken) 1 cup mixed frozen vegetables 1 onion, chopped, 1 tablespoon butter Fresh lemon for serving 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped Butter Sauce 4 tablespoons butter, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper 1 tablespoon soy sauce A little salt and pepper Instructions Cook the rice In the mean time, fry the onion in the butter and steam the frozen veggies until cooked (you could also just microwave them for 2 minutes) Drain the rice once cooked and add the onion and vegetables. Mix through. Shred the chicken breast and add to the rice. To make the sauce, add all the ingredients to a microwaveable bowl or cup and heat for 1 minute or until the butter has melted. Stir well and pour all over the rice and mix through.

Sprinkle parsley over and serve with slices of lemon and a fresh green salad

AGRICULTURE

Zwane visited Guptas days before first funds started flowing to Estina High level Free State politicians‚ including Mosebenzi Zwane‚ visited the Gupta compound in Saxonwold days before funds started flowing to the Vrede Dairy Farm Project‚ which has been exposed to have been a looting ground for the Gupta family. The Sunday Times revealed this weekend that of R220-million paid by the Free State department of agriculture to Estina in support of a dairy farming project meant to uplift the poor‚ only R2-million was used to pay for services relating to the farm. This stems from court papers filed in support of a preservation order application by the NPA's Asset Forefeiture Unit on Thursday last week. In June 2017‚ The Times reported on a string of visits by high level politicians and state officials to the Gupta family home in Saxonwold. The meetings were found scheduled on the Outlook calendar of Sahara Computer’s CEO‚ Ashu Chawla. Among these visitors was Zwane‚ then the MEC for rural development and agriculture in the Free State‚ who was scheduled to meet Tony Gupta on April 6. The first payment was made to Estina on April 18. The Gupta’s entertained other visitors that day – including Free State department of agriculture head Peter Thabethe and MEC for Treasury in the Free State Elzabe Rockman. All three declined to comment when approached in June last year. Email and text queries sent to a spokesperson for Zwane this weekend were not responded to and Thabethe also did not respond to detailed questions. A spokesperson for Rockman said on Sunday that the provincial treasury had seen media reports pertaining to the preservation order but had yet to see the papers‚ and would only comment once they had received it. They did not respond to specific questions over the visits to the Gupta homes. At least R180m flowed to Gupta companies or individuals linked to the family‚ according to the court papers. R10-million was paid directly to Atul Gupta by Estina. The details are revealed in affidavits attached to a preservation order applied for by the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU)‚ which was on Thursday last week granted by the Bloemfontein High Court.

The Sunday Times report details how investigators with the AFU found that R19-million had been paid to Stanlib for a fleet of luxury cars and R30m had been diverted to be used as a down payment on the Gupta’s now infamous Bombardier private jet‚ ZS-OAK. Data from the leaked Gupta emails show that the same day R10-million from Estina found its way into Atul Gupta’s personal bank account. It was moved out again almost immediately.

Contained in the emails are thousands of daily bank transfer approval requests. On December 20 2013 key Gupta man Ashu Chawla is asked to approve‚ among others‚ a transfer of R37.7-million from ‘AK Gupta’ to Islandsite Investments. From there‚ the funds are moved yet again. R23m is paid from Islandsite to Oakbay‚ the flagship company. Oakbay then pays the same amount on to JIC Mining Services‚ the largest company within the mining division of Oakbay Investments. JIC contracted to several platinum mining companies in South Africa‚ providing legitimate mining services. R15million is also paid from Islandsite to Sahara Computers‚ which in turn pays R4.1m to Annex Distribution. Over the next few weeks multiple payments are made from Sahara’s account to various suppliers and other Gupta businesses. A further R13m is moved from Oakbay to Islandsite to JIC on January 6 2014 and a week later R3m is moved from Aerohaven Trading‚ another company that Estina monies was paid to‚ to Oakbay and again on to JIC. From there the trail grows cold according to data in the leaked emails.

No data is available to show where the money flows from JIC. This type of money movement has been described by experts as ‘layering’ – an effort to move funds while obscuring the origin. According to Oakbay financial statements mining‚ which includes JIC as the biggest money maker‚ contributed to 45% of Oakbay’s total R1.2bn revenue for the year ended February 2016. Islandsite and Oakbay‚ in which President Jacob Zuma’s son Duduzane held shares‚ is among the companies now slapped with the preservation order. Courtesy Times

Ek het in Petrus Steyn groot geword waar ek aan die Hoerskool JA Malherbe gematrikuleer het. My pa, Basie, was ‘n onderwyser en hy en my ma, Lettie, was vir meer as 10 jaar koshuisouers.

Ek kon op vyf jaar vlot uit Volksblad lees en ons as gesin was woord- en taalmense. My ouers en broer, Bennie, is ook baie musikaal. ‘n Wonderlike musiekonderwyser, mev. Marie Wels, het ontdek ek is musikaal en so het ek buitengewoon begin presteer in musiek en vir al my musiekeksamens van Unisa lof behaal. Musiekstudies by Kovsies het noodwendig gevolg. Daarna skoolgehou in Parys en Petrus Steyn, by Hoerskool Voortrekker vir 10 jaar en laaste in Heilbron. In 1994 was musiekonderwys in gedrang en het ek besluit om ‘n nuwe loopbaan uit te woeker. Omdat ek toe reeds vir Volksblad bydraes gelewer het vir Stop van Myne is ek binne 10 minute aangestel toe ek by die Bethlehem-kantoor oor ‘n pos navraag gedoen het. Dit was ontgetwyfel van Bo beskik toe ek werkloos en benoud was oor ‘n toekoms.

Koerantwerk begin by omgee vir mense. Om hulle met integriteit in te lig en so oor hulle te berig. Om berigte te skryf wat betroubaar en geloofwaardig is. ‘n Ingeligte leser kan immers die beste besluite neem. Daar is soveel hoogtepunte wat ek as joernalis beleef het – soos die gedurige, positiewe interaksie met mense.

Dis inspirerend as mense jou vertrou met inligting wat hulle nie gepubliseer wil hê nie of om ‘n netjiese berig te skryf uit deurmekaar notas. Die skryfgedeelte van koerantmaak is ‘n baie bevredigende ambag. Koerantwerk is ‘n geleentheid om jou gemeenskap te dien en in die kollig te plaas.

Die gemeenskapskoerant omgewing het baie verander die laaste vyf jaar. Deel jou opinie met ons oor hou sake nou staan en wat jy dink die toekoms vir plaaslike gedrukte media in die Oos-Vrystaat is.

Ek lees baie hieroor na. Die media ondergaan ongetwyfeld vinnige en groot omwentelings. Die New York Times moes in 2009 reeds geld leen om te bly bestaan. Iemand, ek dink Bun Booyens, voormalige redakteur van Burger, het ‘n jaar of wat gelede gesê daar word voorspel dat die gedrukte media in Amerika sewe jaar oor het, 10 jaar in Brittanje en 35 jaar in Suid-Afrika. Ek dink ‘n plaaslike gedrukte koerant in die OosVrystaat gaan nog lank oorleef. Inhoud is altyd koning van ‘n koerant en plaaslike nuus anker daardie inhoud. Dit is wat mense wil lees.

Streekskoerante het ‘n bestaansreg want plaaslike nuus sal nooit sterf nie. As die markte verstaan word en daar aanpasbaarheid is by ‘n gedrukte koerant, sien ek nog baie lig. Dit is ook so dat die gedrukte koerant(e) deel is van ‘n groot diversiteit in die media. Daar is ook die radio en die digitale koerante. Die media het mekaar nodig.

Ons is in die Oos-Vrystaat ekstra geseënd met presterende kunstenaars, musikante, dansers, fotograwe, skrywers, kultuurorganisasies . . . LENS is nie in kompetisie met enige ander platform in die media nie. Vir my as redakteur is dit ‘n voortgesette uitlewing as koerantmens en die blad groei positief. Ek behoort meer aandag aan LENS te gee!

En dan is jy ook nog bemarker en omroeper van Maluti FM. Vertel ons meer.

Ek het onlangs as omroeper bedank maar werk nog as bemarker. Die diversiteit van die media het nie grense nie. Gemeenskapsradiostasies in Suid-Afrika (teenoor kommersiele radiostasies soos OFM) beleef ongekende groei.

Het jy dit op ‘n kol oorweeg om die politiek te betree?

Ja, ek het. Ek het met die vorige verkiesing in plaaslike regering vir die DA se distriksraad gestaan en uitgeval. My passie was en is om deel te wees om Dihlabeng se vyf gemeenskappe beter te help maak. Om waghond te wees en saam met strukture wat betroubaar is te werk en te veg vir ‘n eerlike regering wat toegespits is op dienslewering aan belastingbetalers in die eerste plek, en nie op politiekery of om eie beursies te vul nie. Politiek hoort gladnie in plaaslike regering nie. Ek het intussen ‘n heenkome by AfriForum Bethlehem gevind as media-persoon op die bestuur – ‘n organisasie wat kookwater is en myns insiens meer doen as al die politieke partye saam in die Dihlabeng-munisipaliteit.

Waar sien jy jouself oor vyf jaar?

As dit die Here se wil is – steeds aktief in die media en oral waar ek ‘n positiewe verskil kan help maak. Kreatief-skrywend en bedrywig in my gemeenskap. Ek glo nie in “aftrede” of ouderdomsbeperkings nie. Ek het twee orrelposte wat vir my as musikant en Christen baie beteken.

Sondae leef ek my eers uit in die Anglikaanse Kerk en geniet die eeue oue Engelse gesange.

Na dit volg nog ‘n kerkdiens by die Hervormde Kerk en dan kom die Afrikaanse Liedboek aan die beurt. Ek is ‘n passievolle kerkorrelis. Vyf jaar vorentoe kan net beter wees, maar ek is in die Here se hande.
