Easter Sermon Special 2017

(Joh. 19:10) Wat Jesus hom antwoord is vir my so aangrypend en wys so duidelik dat Jesus se kruisdood God se verlossingsplan vir die mensdom was. “Jesus sê toe: Jy sou niks aan My kon doen as God dit nie so wou gehad het nie.” (Joh. 11:11) God wíl dit so hê. Dis God.

There's a detail in the Gospel of John that not only describes Jesus' resurrection, it helps us see it. What does it look like to rise from the dead? Society's Idea of Resurrection We've all seen the TV dramas in the operating room when the heart monitor suddenly goes flat with the ominous and unceasing tone. Then the shock paddles are brought in and the formerly and technically dead person is brought back to life. Maybe it's like that—jolts of electricity running through the body. Or maybe it's the way most of us feel on a particularly early morning when the alarm clock goes off. We jump out of sleep, but as we switch the near blinding light on, it takes a few moments to rub the sleep out of our eyes. We have a sense of weakness in our hands and fingers as the blood starts to get going again, until we can eventually stagger to the bathroom to turn on the shower. Maybe it's like that, only greater—we need a couple of hours to regain control of our faculties and get some strength to just sit up. What Really Happened on Easter Morning? Something tells me that Jesus didn't stumble out of the tomb. Something tells me He didn't cough and gurgle, or need the blood flow to return to His extremities on Easter Sunday morning. Sure, His death was messy. Undignified. Bloody. Gruesome. Embarrassing even. But His resurrection? That was different. Can't you just see it? I love the fact that John, right in the middle of his Easter morning account, drops a little detail into the narrative that not only describes the resurrection of Jesus, but helps us see it. Feel it. We see Mary coming to the tomb—hopeless and despondent, her faith dying with Jesus. We hear the night sounds starting to fade as the sun begins to rise. We sense the stillness—even the emptiness—of the air. We see her tears and feel the crushing weight of her even greater grief as she discovers in the darkness of the morning the stone rolled away. We hear her shrill cries as she sobs out her testimony to Simon Peter and John that grave robbers have come and stolen the body. One Curious Little Detail Then comes the running. We hear the panting.

By Micheal Kelly We feel the hot breath. We see the younger of the two outrun the older. Then, by the first rays of light, we see along with, first, John and then Peter, that the tomb is indeed empty. That's when we get the detail: "The wrapping that had been on His head was not lying with the linen cloths but was folded up in a separate place by itself" (John 20:7). It's a curious little detail to include, don't you think? John was there; he saw the whole thing. It's possible that the memory was so ingrained into him that he wanted to record every last detail. But maybe too, buried in this little detail, is a commentary about the nature of the risen Lord. Jesus was raised to life, and when He was, He took on the dignity befitting Him. He simply got up in an unhurried manner. Like the Lord of All Creation that He is, He took a few moments to put things in order, even going so far as doing something like making His bed. Jesus didn't stagger and stumble, bleary-eyed and numb from the coils of death; He rose as a conquering hero. And He strode out of the tomb like He owned the place. Because He does. Out of Death and Into Life This is not like the resurrection of Lazarus whom Jesus pulled out of death. Just a few chapters earlier in this Gospel, he came out of the grave "bound hand and foot with linen strips and with his face wrapped in a cloth" (John 11:44). Jesus Himself gave the order to "loose him and let him go" because Lazarus couldn't do it himself. Jesus took a few moments to give us a little glimpse into the fact that centuries before the cross and the tomb, creation was broken by sin. It was set in a spiral of disorder where up was down and left was right. Everything was flipped on its head, but when He stepped out of the tomb, He announced to that broken creation that He was setting everything back the way it was always supposed to be.Out of disorder and into order. Out of death and into life. Out of brokenness and into wholeness. And maybe that reordering started with that simple act of taking what might have otherwise been a wrinkled, tattered mess and folding it up neatly. Then He walked out into the light …

12 things you should know about diabetes 1. What is diabetes? Diabetes is a chronic disease that develops when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body becomes unable to use the insulin it produces effectively. 2. What is insulin? Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that enables cells to absorb glucose from the blood and use it for energy. Diabetes leads to raised levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood (hyperglycaemia), which are associated with long-term damage to the body. 3. What are the main types of diabetes? There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune condition that usually occurs early in life (infancy or childhood), while type 2 generally has a later onset (during adulthood) and is often associated with poor lifestyle choices. 4. What is the most common type of diabetes? Type 2 diabetes is the most common, accounting for at least 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide. Its prevalence is increasing dramatically. 5. What is the prevalence of type 2 diabetes both worldwide and in South Africa? Type 2 diabetes prevalence in South Africa is estimated at between 4.5% and 5.6% in individuals aged 20-79 years. This translates into 1.3-2 million diabetes patients. In sub-Saharan Africa as a whole, the figure is estimated to be 12.1 million adults - with only 15% having been diagnosed. Worldwide, 285 million people were living with diabetes in 2010 – approximately 4.6% of the world’s population. The International Diabetes Federation anticipates that these figures will increase to 438 million (7.8%) by 2030. 6. What are the symptoms/warning signs of diabetes? The onset of type 1 diabetes is usually sudden and dramatic, but type 2 diabetes often has no, or minimal, symptoms, which is what makes it an especially insidious condition that may be present for a long time before it is diagnosed.

Where symptoms are present, they can include: frequent urination; excessive thirst; increased hunger; unexplained weight loss; tiredness/fatigue; lack of interest and concentration; vomiting and stomach pain (often mistaken for something else); a tingling sensation or numbness in the hands or feet; blurred vision; frequent infections; and/or slow-healing wounds. 7. What are the risk factors for type 2 diabetes? Several risk factors for type 2 diabetes have been identified. These include: obesity; poor diet and physical inactivity; increasing age; insulin resistance; and a family history of diabetes and ethnicity. In South Africa, those of Indian descent appear to be particularly susceptible to diabetes.Changes in diet and physical activity related to rapid development and urbanisation have also led to sharp increases in the numbers of people developing diabetes, a trend especially marked in black South Africans. 8. How is diabetes treated? While type 1 diabetes requires regular insulin injections, the cornerstone of type 2 diabetes management and the first strategy that should be employed is diet and lifestyle modification in the form of healthier eating choices and regular exercise. Should that prove insufficient, there are a variety of different choices in respect of pharmacological treatments that can delay or even prevent the requirement for insulin injections. Your doctor will be able to advise you in this regard. 9. What are the latest advances in diabetes treatment? The latest advance in diabetes treatment is a class of drugs called incretin-based therapies, which include the GLP-1 analogues that target the gut hormone, glucagon-like peptide 1, levels of which are low in those with diabetes. GLP-1’s work via a different mechanism from insulin and other currently available antidiabetic drugs, regulating blood glucose levels while also helping to preserve pancreatic functioning, thus delaying disease progression. They have additional positive effects on the heart and blood

vessels, thus reducing the cardiovascular risks associated with diabetes, for example heart attack and stroke. Because of its mode of action, incretin therapy does not carry the risk of hypoglycaemia that comes with insulin therapy. Perhaps most strikingly, these treatments promote greater feelings of satiety and hence reduced food intake. This means they help lower body weight in type 2 diabetes. This is an important consideration, as excess weight and obesity are risk factors for type 2 diabetes and maintenance of a healthy weight is an important component of its treatment.Improving control of diabetes with currently available therapies frequently leads to increases in weight, except in the case of metformin. 10. Can diabetes be cured? No, but it can be well managed, allowing those with the condition to live long, essentially healthy lives. 11. Can diabetes be prevented? Type 1 diabetes cannot currently be prevented. The environmental triggers that are thought to generate the process that results in the destruction of the body’s insulinproducing cells are still under investigation. Type 2 diabetes, however, can be prevented in many cases by maintaining a healthy body weight and being physically active. There is substantial evidence that achieving a healthy body weight and moderate physical activity can help prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. 12. What are the complications of diabetes? Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are chronic, lifelong conditions that require careful monitoring and control. In the absence thereof, very high blood sugar levels can cause long-term damage to various organs and tissues, including the heart and blood vessels (with potentially fatal complications such as heart attack and stroke), the kidneys (with the potential for kidney failure), the nerves (possibly resulting in limb amputations) and the eyes (with the potential for loss of vision).

Klitsie wil graag al my lesers 'n Geseënde Paasfees toewens!

Easter Eggs are a traditional sweet, made from chocolate or confectionery items, which symbolise the start of a new life - they mark the resurrection of Jesus Christ. On this special and sweet occasion, take a look at interesting fun facts and surprising numbers around Easter celebrations. Chocolate eggs, the most popular of Easter candies, were first made in Europe in the early 19th century and remain among the most popular treats associated with Easter. After Halloween, Easter is the second top-selling confectionery holiday followed by Christmas and Valentine's Day. Hot cross buns were among the earliest Easter treats, made by European monks and given to the poor during Lent. Among the sweet items, the red jellybean is an all time favourite with children. The largest Easter Egg ever made was just over 25ft high, weighing up to 8,968lbs and was made of chocolate and marshmallow, entering the Guinness Book of World Records. Around 16 billion jellybeans are made for Easter; many of them are hidden in baskets. If all the Easter jellybeans were lined end-to-end, they would circle the globe nearly three times. According to 76% of people, the ears on chocolate bunnies should be eaten first. Yellow Peeps are the most popular, followed by pink, lavender, blue and white. The tallest chocolate Easter egg measured 10.39m (34ft 1.05in) in height and was made by Tosca (Italy). It was measured at Le Acciaierie Shopping Centre, in Cortenuova, Italy on 16 April 2011. The chocolate Easter egg weighed 7,200kg and had a circumference of 19.6m (64 ft 3.65in) at its widest point.
