The stability of a police station and its smooth running is evidence of the quality of its leadership core. At the helm, the Station Commander must possess the necessary skills to pull strings and ensure that all sections work in synergy. Attention to detail, enforcing discipline and being fearless or a lack thereof are some of the tools that could make or break a police station. Moreover, such a leader must be trusted by the community. This is made possible by concerted efforts to keep the lines of communication flowing freely, approachability, and above all; incorruptibility. One such person is the newly appointed Station Commander of Reitz SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Moipone Msutu. With an impeccable 28 years` experience, it is small wonder that she comes so highly recommended. Growing up, little Moipone had always had a passion for policing and keeping others safe, a virtue she acquired through being the elder child. She has fond memories of growing up in Maokeng Kroonstad where her mother and a very strict uncle raised her. Both disciplinarians, they were responsible for moulding her into the leader she is today. As a God-fearing family, they instilled in her a sense of community and service to the people. It was only much later (in 1987) that the police uniform beckoned. She trained at Hammanskraal where
the basics of policing were taught and her evident passion to fight crime was shaped. Three years later she started ascending police ranks and became a Lance Sergeant, Sergeant in 1995, Inspector in 1999, and Captain in 2005. Lt Col Msutu is welltravelled, having worked at stations such as Kroonstad, Kagisanong (Bloemfontein), Bloemspruit (Bloemfontein) and recently Deneysville. A true leader is seen by possessing diverse skills. Her vast experience is as a result of having served in different capacities. In a career spanning over two decades, Lt Col Msutu has served in the Community Service Centre (CSC), conducted investigations, worked in finance, inspectorate and registry. According to her, her first love remains Social Crime Prevention, an environment she mastered for well over 15 years of her career. As an epitome of such a balance, she is not only an uncompromising lioness when it comes to police operations but also an administrator par excellence with an unbelievable work ethic. The mother of two, and many others she has touched in a special way, is passionate about imparting her knowledge to the new generation of police officers. She had this to say about the new crop, especially females: “The SAPS is a family of many generations with a rich history. I am where I am today because those who came before me were
unselfish enough to invest their time in me. This same baton will be passed on for many years to come. Our task is to level the playing fields and ensure that women take their rightful place in the organisation. However, it will not be delivered on a silver platter. Female officers, who are just as capable as their male counterparts, must prove their worth. Discipline and commitment will take them far,” she says with much emphasis. Every policing environment has its unique challenges. The town of Reitz is no exception. Upon assuming office, she immediately embraced the challenges of assaults, burglaries, and stock theft which are prevalent in the area. At the mention of these, her eyes enlarge. She has vowed to mobilise both her personnel and the community against these monsters. “The majority of residents are law-abiding citizens who are just as disturbed about crime as me. Surely, such common ground ignites a partnership. We will not sleep. Everyone will become involved. Streets will be patrolled, both property and persons will be searched, illegal liquor outlets shall be shut down, and all order will be restored. Through partnerships with the communities (farmers, business, schools, churches, and residents), I am confident that we will win. I look forward to the challenge,” she said.

Watter klere? Nie eers te praat van die dinge by die werk nie! Soms maak ons liederlike verkeerde besluite deur te vinnig iets te sê wat ons liewer moet los, of soms bly ons stil toe ons moes praat. Ons leer ook ons kinders keuses maak deur net die verkeerde dinge voor hulle te sê, bv negatiewe rassistiese of politieke praatjies. Nee, kies is moeilik, en boonop moet ons binnekort gaan stem! Wel, ons kan (en moet) die Here ken in al ons keuses, maar ek dink dit gaan eerder oor 'n lewe waar die Here deel uitmaak van alles, as om insident vir insident oor 'n saak te bid vir 'n antwoord. Ek glo nie dat die keuse oor tande borsel op daardie vlak hanteer hoef te word nie, dis totaal onbelangrik. Ek dink nie die Here wil "micro management" in ons lewens toepas nie, daarvoor gee Hy vir ons die wysheid om sinvol en met verantwoordelikheid ons besluite te neem, en dan seën Hy ons in daai besluite. Soms gebruik ons die gedagte van "ek wag op 'n antwoord", as 'n verskoning om niks te doen nie. Ons vra lank gelede vir 'n dame om net vir een aand in 'n gebedspan te wees, toe sê sy sy gaan eers daaroor bid. Natuurlik is daar niks daarmee verkeerd nie, maar ek het gewonder of die Here sal dink dat iemand liewer nie moet bid nie. Die punt is, na BAIE jare is daar steeds nie 'n antwoord nie. Net so het ons iemand gevra om by 'n bediening betrokke te raak en die gedagte van "ek wil eers daaroor bid", was voorgehou . Ja, NATUURLIK is dit 'n ernstige saak en mens moet daaroor bid, maar ek wag ook al baie jare vir die antwoord. My punt is, soms moet ons net doen. Ek het vir 'n goeie vriend eendag gevra hoe hy hieroor voel. Sy antwoord was: Willem, as die Here 'n deur oopmaak en my roep, doen ek dit eers en vra dan vrae, dis 'n beter fout om te maak as om niks te doen nie. ~Willem Botha

A stunning bread that will make your table beautiful. Preparation time: 40 Cooking time: 45 Ingredients 260 ml white bread flour 20 ml instant dried yeast 50 ml brown sugar 15 ml grated lemon rind 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 200 ml lukewarm milk 200 g icing sugar 60 ml lemon juice 75 g filling: chopped glacé cherries 50 g candied fruit 50 g sultanas 100 g flaked almonds 60 g brown sugar 10 ml ground cinnamon 5 ml ground mixed spice Method 1. Combine the flour, yeast, 3ml salt, sugar and lemon zest in a large mixing bowl. Add the eggs and milk and stir until everything comes together to form a smooth dough. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic, or use the dough hook on a food processor. 2. Place the dough into a lightly oiled bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Allow to rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size, then knead again for a few minutes. Mix the filling ingredients and add half the mixture to the dough. Knead until the ingredients have been incorporated into the dough. 3. Divide the dough in half and roll into two tube shapes of the same size and length. Press two of the ends together and then twist the two pieces together until you get to the other end. Bend to form a circle on a greased baking tray and press the ends together. Leave to rise again until the dough has doubled in size. Bake in a preheated oven for 35 to 45 minutes until golden and cooked through. Remove from the oven and leave to cool. 4. Mix the icing sugar and lemon juice. Drizzle over the bread and sprinkle with the remaining filling mixture. Serve sliced with butter.

Die eerste "IEC" registrasie naweek het aangebreek en hier is die kans uiteindelik om te registreer om in vanjaar se plaaslike verkiesing te stem. Nog nooit het 'n plaaslike verkiesing soveel aandag gekry soos hierdie jaar se verkiesing nie. Rekord berig op 'n gereelde basis oor die agteruitgang van ons dorp. Ons almal word geraak deur die slaggate in die paaie, die leë krane en krag wat kort kort af is. Elke stem tel in die komende verkiesing. Die party wat jy voor wil stem sal dalk nie die verkiesing wen nie maar danksy die proporsionele stem sisteem wat ons land gebruik kan jou stem help verseker dat die party 'n plek op die Munisipale raad bekom. Dis 'n feit dat daar 'n groot getal inwoners is wat nie gaan registreer nie maar gou kan kla as daar 'n probleem is met Munisipale dienslewering. Kom ons registreer om te stem en wys watter mag ons as gemeenskap se X het. Ons inhoud het die week uitgebrei met 'n paar nuwe rubrieke wat vandag hul debuut in die uitgawe maak. Ons poog voortdurend om ons aanbod uit te brei om aan ons lesers se behoeftes te voldoen. Baie dankie aan Lele Mbeki se leiding hiermee. Geniet die week wat kom. Van die vroegste tye af was dié deel van die Vrystaat waarin Reitz geleë is, bekend as die Riemland. Die Riemland is geleë in die noord-oostelike deel van die Vrystaat en beslaan die distrikte Kroonstad, Heilbron, Lindley, Bethlehem en Reitz. Die benaming Riemland is ontleen aan die feit dat talle transportryers sowel as die vroegste wit bewoners van hierdie gebied baie grootwild geskiet, die velle gebrei en rieme daarvan gemaak het. In 1866 het ’n Kroonstadse firma meer as 150 000 velle van blesbokke en wildebeeste na Europa uitgevoer. Dit alles het bygedra tot hierdie gebied se benaming. Dit word vertel dat die bewoners ook die koppe van grootwild wat geskiet is, op miers-hope en uitstaande klippe geplaas het om sodoende die rigting van die omliggende dorpe aan te dui, want die gras was lank en ruig en dit het in ’n groot mate die uitsig belemmer. Voor 1875 het Reitz deel gevorm van die enorme plaas Lange Spruit van ’n ene meneer Hendrik Bastiaan Davel. Hendrik Davel het Lange Spruit van die Vrystaatse regering gekoop omdat dit in daardie stadium onbewoon was en aan die Staat behoort het. Hy het dié plaas, wat 16 519 morge groot was, omstreeks 1873 kontant gekoop teen R1 per morg. Sowat 3 591 morge van dié plaas is in April 1875
deur landmeter-generaal Charles Pritchard afgemeet en Davel het dit aan Johannes Gysbert (Jan) Roos vir R800 verkoop. Hierdie afgemete gedeelte van die plaas Lange Spruit is toe Stompkop genoem. Vir baie persone het transportry in daardie dae ’n goeie inkomste gelewer en al gou het Stompkop ’n gewilde staanplek onder transportryers geword tydens hul lang togte oor hierdie gebied tussen Potchefstroom en Pietermaritzburg. Spoedig het ene Singer dan ook ’n winkeltjie in die omgewing geopen. Om die toeloop na sy winkeltjie te laat toeneem, het Singer reëlings getref om ook die in- en uitgaande pos te behartig. So het sy plek toe die naam van Singer’s Post gekry. Kort daarna is daar ook ’n smidswinkeltjie geopen asook ’n hotel en ’n tweede winkeltjie, die van Kamann. Geleidelik het die bewoners van Stompkop en omgewing tot die besef gekom dat, indien ’n dorp gestig word, dit baie probleme sou oplos. Op ’n vergadering op 24 April 1884 op die plaas Stompkop van Jan Roos, was daar 74 persone teenwoordig. Die behoefte aan ’n dorp in hierdie omgewing het steeds ernstiger geword en daarom is besluit om ’n dorp te stig waar ’n kerkgebou opgerig sou kon word. ’n Kommissie is op hierdie vergadering deur die bewoners
saamgestel om die hele saak noukeurig te ondersoek. Die eienaar van Stompkop, Jan Roos, het hier ook sy bereidwilligheid te kenne gegee om ’n gedeelte van sy plaas vir dié doel te verkoop. In hierdie stadium het daar egter ’n onverwagte probleem opgeduik. Die bewoners van hierdie gebied was in twee kampe verdeel ten opsigte van die presiese plek waar die te stigte dorp tot stand moes kom. Een gedeelte van die bewoners wou hê dat dit op Singer’s Post, op Jan Roos se plaas, Stompkop moes wees. Die ander groep bewoners wou hê dat die dorp op die walle van die Liebenbergvleirivier, waar reeds ’n wolwassery, ’n meule en ’n hotel was, geleë moes wees. Hier was reeds ’n damwal in die rivier gebou en baie bewoners het hul skape se wol hier skoon gewas voordat dit na die markte gestuur is, sodat dit beter pryse kon behaal. Die dorp sou dus óf op Stompkop óf by die wolwassery aangelê word. Om eensgesindheid oor die presiese plek waar die dorp opgerig moes word, te verkry, was ’n netelige dog ernstige probleem. Ten einde te besin oor die wenslikheid al dan nie op die oorlog teen Brittanje voort te sit, het die leiers van die twee Republieke besluit om op generaal Louis Botha se plaas, Waterval in die distrik van Standerton, te vergader

Omdat die Boeremagte weer ’n paar oorwinnings oor die Engelse behaal het, is daar op genoemde vergadering besluit om wel met die oorlog voort te gaan. Na die algemene vergadering van die Vrystaatse krygsraad op die plaas Spijtfontein tussen Reitz en Lindley, op 3 Julie 1901 is president Steyn en sy regering terug na sy eie kommando wat na Reitz begin beweeg het. Sommige van die regering se heliograwe was buite werking en president Steyn het besluit om ’n paar dae in Reitz te vertoef ten einde die heliograwe te laat herstel. Hy het aan kommandant Davel toestemming gegee om die Boere-krygers ’n paar dae verlof te gee. Onder hulle was ’n verraaier, Jan Steenkamp, wat die president se posisie dadelik aan die vyand, wat ook in die omgewing was, verklap het. Met die hulp van Steenkamp het generaal R.G. Broadwood en sy troepe na Reitz vertrek om president Steyn te probeer vang. Maar gelukkig het generaal De Wet verkeerde inligting na die vyand laat deursypel om hul op ’n dwaalspoor te bring. Toe die Engelse uitvind dat generaal De Wet ook in die nabyheid was, het hulle besluit om hom te agtervolg, want as hulle dit kon regkry om hierdie vermaarde Boere-generaal te vang, sou hul beker van geluk oorloop. Aan die ander kant sou dit feitlik ’n nekslag vir die Boere beteken. Die middag van 9 Julie

Gordon Fraser (privaat-sekretaris van die president) het aan President Steyn gesê dat hy bekommerd is dat indien die Engelse hulle sou agtervolg hy, die President, nie vinnig op sy perd sou wegkom nie. Dit was algemeen aanvaarde verstandhouding dat die president nooit oornag het op die plek waar hy dieselfde dag aangekom het nie. Generaals AP Cronjé en JB Wessels het hom probeer oorreed om verder te gaan. Kommandant Davel se verkenners het berig dat Broadwood en sy soldate sowat 8 km buite die dorp sou oornag. Bowendien was veldkornet H Serfontein en sy kommando tussen die dorp en die vyand. Daarom het Steyn hom veilig gevoel om wel in Reitz te oornag. Na die pas afgelope beraadslagings en omswerwinge was die president daardie aand baie uitgeput en dit het verder gelyk asof ’n lomerigheid, soos soms in die verlede, hom oorval het. Die meeste burgers het ook aan die plaaslike gemeente behoort en baie van hulle het ook tuishuise op die dorp gehad – wat nog nie almal deur die Engelse verwoes is nie – waar hulle die nag sou deurbring. Die tent waarin president Steyn die nag sou slaap, is voor die huis van Reitz se landdros, landdros Rossouw opgeslaan en hy, sy oudste broer, Pieter, sowel as generaals Cronjé en Wessels het in die tent geslaap. Dit is onduidelik waarom die president
nie in die huis geslaap het nie, maar waarskynlik sou die Engelse hom makliker in die huis kon vaskeer en om dit te verhoed, het hy verkies om in die tent te oornag. Davel en Thomas Brain het hulle vir die nag onder ’n wa digby die president ingerig. President Steyn se sekretaris, Rocco de Villiers en Gordon Fraser, Alec McHardy, Paul Kamann en Hendrik van Jaarsveld het in landdros Rossouw se huis geslaap. Sommige van die perde is gekniehalter en dié van die president sowel as ’n paar ander is in ’n stal, sowat 400 meter van die tent af, geplaas. Baie na aan die president se tent het sy getroue Griekwa-agterryer en kok, Ruiter, geslaap. Hy was deurentyd in die nabyheid om president Steyn van diens te wees. It must be exasperating for the opposition. Despite competition from more modern and refined rivals like the VW Amarok and Ford Ranger, the ageing Toyota Hilux last year remained not only South Africa’s favourite bakkie but the best-selling vehicle of any kind. With a ladder frame chassis that’s stronger and a body that’s more torsionally rigid than the outgoing version the new Hilux is tougher and more rugged, but at the same time it’s been made more refined with enhanced sound proofing and a modern new interior. The well-appointed double cab Raider versions are more SUV- than bakkie-like in their greatly upgraded cabins, and the suspension’s been revamped for a more comfortable ride and increased wheel travel. The keen offroad ability of the 4x4 versions has been retained but it's easier to manage with shift-on-the-fly all-wheel drive engagement and a downhill assist control which allows steep descents to be tackled without having to touch the brakes. Built for the local and export markets at Toyota South Africa’s Durban plant, the new Hilux gets a contemporary new look with wraparound headlights. It possibly looks softer than before but it’s still tough as nails beneath. MODERN INTERIOR The interior of the high-spec double cabs I drove at this week’s media launch has taken a leap into the 21st century with USB and aux music inputs, a 7
inch tablet-like touchscreen for the audio system, and a full colour TFT multi-information display in the instrument panel. The patterned black cloth upholstery that’s offered standard is attractive and seems durable. The cabin’s grown to offer more head, shoulder and rear knee room while the load capacity has increased. Towing capacity has been increased across the range (except the entry level petrol model), with the 2.8 GD-6 4x4 models able to lug up to 3.5 tons. Trailer Sway Control (TSC) helps keep it all pointed in the right direction.. All versions come standard with ABS brakes, a driver airbag and electric windows, and the gizmos available on upperspec models include active traction control, climate control, up to seven airbags, cruise control, daytime running lights and a reverse camera among others. 1. What is diabetes? Diabetes is a chronic disease that develops when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body becomes unable to use the insulin it produces effectively. 2. What is insulin? Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that enables cells to absorb glucose from the blood and use it for energy. Diabetes leads to raised levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood (hyperglycaemia), which are associated with long-term damage to the body. 3. What are the main types of diabetes? There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune condition that usually occurs early in life (infancy or childhood), while type 2 generally has a later onset (during adulthood) and is often associated with poor lifestyle choices. 4. What is the most common type of diabetes? Type 2 diabetes is the most common, accounting for at least 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide. Its prevalence is increasing dramatically. 5. What is the prevalence of type 2 diabetes both worldwide and in South Africa? Type 2 diabetes prevalence in South Africa is estimated at between 4.5% and 5.6% in individuals aged 20-79 years. This translates into 1.3-2 million diabetes patients. In sub-Saharan Africa as a whole, the figure is estimated to be 12.1 million adults - with only 15% having been diagnosed. The onset of type 1 diabetes is usually sudden and dramatic, but type 2 diabetes often has no, or minimal, symptoms, which is what makes it an especially insidious condition that may be present for a long time before it is diagnosed. Where symptoms are present, they can include: frequent urination; excessive thirst; increased hunger; unexplained weight loss; tiredness/fatigue;
lack of interest and concentration; vomiting and stomach pain (often mistaken for something else); a tingling sensation or numbness in the hands or feet; blurred vision; frequent infections; and/or slow-healing wounds. 7. What are the risk factors for type 2 diabetes? Several risk factors for type 2 diabetes have been identified. How is diabetes treated? While type 1 diabetes requires regular insulin injections, the cornerstone of type 2 diabetes management and the first strategy that should be employed is diet and lifestyle modification in the form of healthier eating choices and regular exercise. Should that prove insufficient, there are a variety of different choices in respect of pharmacological treatments that can delay or even prevent the requirement for insulin injections. Your doctor will be able to advise you in this regard. 9. What are the latest advances in diabetes treatment? The latest advance in diabetes treatment is a class of drugs called incretin-based therapies, which include the GLP-1 analogues that target the gut hormone, glucagon-like peptide 1, levels of which are low in those with diabetes. GLP-1’s work via a different mechanism from insulin and other currently available antidiabetic drugs, regulating blood glucose levels while also helping to preserve pancreatic functioning, thus delaying disease progression. They have additional positive effects on the heart and blood vessels, thus reducing the cardiovascular risks associated with diabetes, for example heart attack and stroke. Because of its mode of action, incretin therapy does not carry the risk of hypoglycaemia that comes with insulin therapy. Perhaps most strikingly, these treatments promote greater feelings of satiety and hence reduced food intake. This means they help lower body
weight in type 2 diabetes. This is an important consideration, as excess weight and obesity are risk factors for type 2 diabetes and maintenance of a healthy weight is an important component of its treatment.Improving control of diabetes with currently available therapies frequently leads to increases in weight, except in the case of metformin. 10. Can diabetes be cured? No, but it can be well managed, allowing those with the condition to live long, essentially healthy lives. 11. Can diabetes be prevented? Type 1 diabetes cannot currently be prevented. The environmental triggers that are thought to generate the process that results in the destruction of the body’s insulin-producing cells are still under investigation. Type 2 diabetes, however, can be prevented in many cases by maintaining a healthy body weight and being physically active. There is substantial evidence that achieving a healthy body weight and moderate physical activity can help prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. 12. What are the complications of diabetes? Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are chronic, lifelong conditions that require careful monitoring and control. Bethulie a golden oldie! Bethulie – I have a personal affinity for the town where my grandfather met and married my grandmother. Though such personal ties add dimension, Bethulie, about two hours south of Bloemfontein, is an interesting stopping off point under any circumstances. On the Lake Gariep Tourism Route, it is rich in history – some of it of the darker sort. The town was the setting for the third-largest concentration camp of the Anglo Boer War, so a visit can be poignant. It seems to have been a place of other conflicts. At one stage the area was known as Groot Moordenaarspoort (big murderer’s pass) after a vicious clash between the Sotho and Griqua tribes. The San Bushmen were, however, the first inhabitants and in 1828 the London Missionary Society established a mission in the hopes of converting them. They called it Bethulie
(chosen by God). In 1832 Jean Pierre Pellissier, of the Paris Mission Society, replaced the men from London. and renamed his station Bethulua (place of worship). Pellissier’s home – one of the oldest pioneer buildings north of the Orange River – houses a museum. As a town sprang up around the mission, it was named Caledon, after the nearby river, but as there was a town in the Cape with the same name, another had to be found. Over the years it was called Bethulua, Verheullpolis, Heidelberg, then in 1872 it was changed back to Bethulie. What is delightful about the town, is that it has not changed much with time. Many of the roads are not tarred. It is easy to walk around the centre armed with a map of places of interest. A stop-over at the Royal Hotel offers a unique experience – it boasts racks and racks of
books. You might want to extend your stay if you come across a book you have been eager to read, but not able to track down elsewhere. The DH Steyn Bridge – a beautiful arched affair, which acts as a rail and a road bridge – is a stone’s throw away. At 1.15m long and 51.5m high, it is the longest bridge in the country, and claims to be the longest in the southern hemisphere. The Bethulie Dam with the Tussen-die-Riviere Nature Reserve, lends itself to outdoor activities such as game viewing, hiking, angling, boating, and fishing. Locals say a night gazing at the stars in this reserve can be special. The nearby Gariep Dam is one of South Africa’s top micro-light spots. The dam – more than 100km in length and 15km wide – is scenically beautiful with islands popping up out of the water. It is possible to do a fascinating tour of the 914m long and 88m high dam wall.

Mention the words tummy time to your mom, and she probably won’t know what you’re talking about. Because back in the day, “tummy time” (which is awake, supervised playtime on baby’s tum) didn’t exist as such, and it wasn’t something that she consciously had to do with you. Instead, it happened involuntarily when she put you down to sleep on your stomach or left you to lie freely on a blanket. But things have changed. “Let’s be honest, life is pretty hectic. As a result, babies are sometimes left to fend for themselves on their backs, in their prams or in their baby equipment. It’s the easier option – especially when they’re fussy – while mom or dad tackle a million and one things,” says Cape Town-based occupational therapist Kirsty Beamish. 1. Start early The earlier you start tummy time with your baby, the better, and the more chance there is that your baby will enjoy it. So put your newborn on your chest. In this position, the neck and backstrengthening benefits of tummy time are gained. 2. Prop her up For a slightly older baby, roll a towelling nappy under her chest to raise it up a little and make her more comfy. You can even use a breastfeeding cushion, a pillow or a small 55cm gym ball. Lie your baby across one and roll her gently over it from side to side and from back to front. 3. Time it right Time her tummy time for after naps and when she’s been fed – just not straight afterwards. A content baby is much more likely to cooperate and have fun on her tum than a fussy one. 4. Break it up Do as much tummy time as your baby can tolerate, and alternate tummy time with back time. Start with three to five minutes three times a day and gradually build it up. Eventually, your baby should be able to do about 30 minutes throughout the day, perhaps even more. 5. Play with her Distract your baby from the fact that she’s on her tummy and get down on your tummy too. Make eye contact with her, play with her – blow bubbles, play peek-a-boo or read to her. If you’re busy, place her at your feet on a blanket with a mirror as babies love looking at themselves. Lots of toys scattered around to look at and reach for work well too. And don’t forget about interactive playmats – a fabulous buy.

Die Jaguares se vertoning en veral die van Sanchez moet geprys word. Vergeet van die dissipline die span gaan vanjaar nog vir baie opskuddings sorg. Terug by die Cheetahs pak die span die Stormers die naweek in Bloemfontein. Glad nie 'n maklike wedstryd nie en as ons na die statistieke kyk is die Kapenaars 'n berg wat ons nog nie kon uitklim nie. Hulle is: voorsitter Frans Badenhorst van Harrismith, ondervoorsitter Danny Claassens van Frankfort, tesourier, Alex Botha van Harrismith, sekretaris André Bester van Kestell, lede, Daan Meyer van Bethlehem, Suzette Olivier van Senekal, Sue Delport van Bethlehem, Sakkie Niewoudt vir Reitz en Petrus Steyn en Julian Bruyns van Heilbron. Een van die stigterslede van SAGES, Jan Nijhuys wat al die jare op die bestuur gedien het, het homself nie weer beskikbaar gestel vir ‘n verdere termyn nie. Schalk Strydom van Senekal was die uittredende voorsitter. Terselfdertyd het die jaarlikse takkampioenskappe plaasgevind en 28 spelers het deelgeneem. Tienie van der Spuy van Bethlehem was die wenner met 40 punte. Tweede was André Redelinghuys met 39 punte gevolg deur Danny Claassen in die derde plek met 38 punte. Jan Nijhuys van Bethlehem was vierde met 35 punte gevolg deur Bonny Mekoa van Harrismith in die vyfde plek met 34 punte. Die volgende toernooi vind op 7 en 8 Maart op Oppenheimer Park in Welkom plaas. Dit is die Sentrale Mini Nasionale Toern ooi tussen Oos - Vrystaat en Noord – Vrystaat. Die Oos – Vrystaatse span vir die toernooi is reeds bekend gemaak en bestaan uit: Poen Olivier, Suzette Olivier, Schalk Strydom en Koos Wium van Senekal, Frans Badenhorst en Linda Badenhorst van Harrismith, André Redelinghuys van Bethlehem, André Bester van Kestell, Chris Brits en Danny Claassens van Frankfort en Gerald Magoro en Bonny Mekoa van Harrismith. Die volgende kompetisie is die Takkompetisie wat op 17 Maart op Harrismith sal plaasvind.
We have come up with some great techniques and tricks to help you catch Carp on fly. Fish the Fly team member, Jason Macintosh, has given us some insights into how he catches Carp on fly. The key to targeting Carp on fly is using your sight. You need to look for the Carp, they like deeper slow moving pools, shallow areas, and areas with overhanging trees. You can often see them “finning” or “tailing” which indicates their presence. Otherwise you can look for groups of bubbles, this indicates that Carp are feeding on the bottom, and it is a good place to start looking for them. You occasionally catch Carp in the rapids and faster flowing waters while targeting Yellowfish. Your best bet is to walk and find the Carp. Be careful when you walk as they can spook very easily. If you are targeting Carp specifically on fly, we would recommend using a 6 – 9 weight rod and reel, with floating line and a tippet of at least 8-10lbs. Tapered leaders also help, as they absorb the shock on the fast runs the Carp tend to go on. A 6 weight is ideal for targeting Yellowfish and Carp at the same time, but you do need a bit of pulling power if you are looking for those monster 10 kilogram plus fish. So a 7 or even 8 weight is a good setup Method 1: Locate the Carp in the shallows or where you see them feeding as mentioned above. Use a Carp Fritz (Or similar fly – needs to have a black “buggy” body and a red tail, with dung-bell eyes) and cast your fly in front of the feeding fish. If the water is clear enough or if you don’t need one then do not use a strike indicator. If you feel more comfortable using a strike indicator, use one about 50 centimeters from your fly. Watch your leader or indicator for the take, and strike! Method 2: This method allows you to target other fish species as well. Use your Carp Fritz (Or similar fly – this time with a pink or orange bead opposed to dung bell eyes) as a third fly. Let me explain. Use a normal 2 fly nymph method, use a Mustard Caddis (Control fly) and a small GRHE as the point fly. Above the control fly add two split shots, about 10 centimeters apart. Now in-between the split shot tie a piece of leader, about one quarter of the length of your actual leader. Tie your Carp Fritz onto this. This method can be used in rapids and pools and when you are fishing blind. The best flies for targeting Carp on fly on can be seen listed below, obviously these are not all the flies, but they are some good ones to start you off with.
