Two in court for stock theft LINDLEY: Two other men aged 27 and 32 were arrested in Lindley recently for separate incidents involving theft of livestock. Members of Lindley SAPS had reacted to information about a man who was busy slaughtering sheep at a shack in Ntha on Saturday 20 January. He was found in the act and arrested. The second suspect was also found with sheep carcass and arrested. Both Jonas Motaung and Dawid De Wet appeared in the Lindley Magistrates` Court this week and their cases were postponed.

Sir William Osler - The Father of Modern Medicine

“He who studies medicine without books sails an uncharted sea, but he who studies medicine without patients does not go to sea at all.“ Sir William Osler was a Canadian physician and one of the four founding professors of John Hopkins Hospital. Osler was born on 23 July 1849 and died on 29 December 1919. He was a person of many interests and was known as a bibliophile, historian, author, and a renowned practical joker. He followed his father’s footsteps into ministry before he became interested in medical sciences. He enrolled in the Toronto School of Medicine in 1868 and received his medical degree in 1872. Following post-graduate training in Europe, he returned as professor in 1974. He rose through the ranks and in 1905 became Regius Chair of Medicine at Oxford, a position he held until his death. Sir William Osler’s greatest influence on medicine was that students should learn from seeing and learning from patients. In 1675 Isaac Newton said: “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.” Sir William Osler is one of those giants that formed the way medical students are trained in medical school today. His legacy lives in the way academic hospitals

His most famous work, “The Principles and Practice of Medicine”, was published in 1892. It describes the diagnosis and management of diseases known at that time. It is digitized and can be viewed at https://archive.org/stream/principlespract00osle# page/n0/mode/2up. The book describes the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases we see today. New technology and discoveries have changed the way we diagnose and treat, but a lot can be learned from 19th century medicine. As a General Practitioner I am many times faced with conditions where I have to rely on my knowledge, intuition and clinical expertise to correctly diagnose and treat disease.

However, as we approach the post-antibiotic era, it may be necessary for a modern giant to transform the way we practice and teach medicine.

Inspiration

Heuningdruppels Die volgende “G” in my 2018 lysie is gesondheid. Terwyl ek die afgelope paar dae olik is en gestrem word deur pyn en nie kan beweeg soos altyd nie en bietjie afhanklik is van ander om basiese goedjies gedoen te kry, is ek sommer baie bewus van die belangrikheid van hierdie “G”. Ek besef ek waardeer nie gesonde dae genoeg nie. Ek besef ek waardeer nie dokters en toegang tot mediese sorg genoeg nie. Ek besef ek het nie genoeg simpatie met mense wat siek is nie. Ek besef ons is almal ewe kwesbaar en ons gesondheidstoestand kan in ’n oogwink verander. Die sekerheid wat ek egter het, is dat ons kan uitroep na die Here uit ons siekbed, dat ons kan pleit vir sy aanraking en genesing, dat Hy elke stukkie van ons liggaam ken en dat niks vir Hom verborge is nie, dat niks vir Hom onmoontlik is om te genees nie.

Hoekom hy toelaat dat ons siek word, hoekom almal nie gesond word nie ... daai antwoorde het ek nie. Wat ek wel weet is dat Hy daar by jou is in jou siekekamer. Ek sien in my geestesoog dat hierdie teks waar word: “Whenever we’re sick and in bed, God becomes our nurse, nurses us back to health.” (Ps. 41:3, The Message) en ek kan Hom maar net hoor sê: “My genade is vir jou genoeg. My krag kom juis tot volle werking wanneer jy swak is.” (2 Kor. 12:9) ~ Wilna Botha

Wenke wat werk

Soutwenke 1. Plaas ´n rou aartappel in jou sop of bredie indien jy te veel sout ingegooi het. Die aartappel absorbeer die ergste soutsmaak.

Wanneer geregte te sout is, kan bruinsuiker ook help.

2.Gooi ´n paar ryskorrels in die soutpotjie om te ver-hoed dat die sout klonterig raak in klam weer.

3. Om sout wat in potjies vassit los te kry, plaas potjie eers ´n paar minute in lou oond.

4.Gooi ‘n droë ertjie in ‘n peperpot om te voorkom dat die peper saamkleef.

Kitchen delight Braised chicken quarters with bacon and mustard

Prep time : 15 mins

Cook time : 30 mins

Ingredients 45ml (3 tbsp) olive oil Grain Field Chickens Lemon and Herb Quarters 250g bacon rashers, chopped 1 large onion, sliced 15ml cake flour 250ml dry cider 45ml Dijon mustard 1 small head of cabbage 45ml butter

Instructions Preheat the oven to 180°C. Heat the oil in a roasting pan and cook the chicken until golden, for about 5 minutes on each side. Remove and set aside. In the same pan, add the bacon and onion and sauté until the bacon is golden, for about 3 minutes. Stir in the flour and cook for a further minute.

Gradually add in the cider and stir in the mustard. Add the chicken back the mixture and cover with foil and bake until the chicken is cooked through for about 40 minutes.

Steam the cabbage until just tender and toss through the butter. Serve with the chicken while still hot.

Body of a man found: suspects sought PETRUS STEYN: Petrus Steyn detectives are looking for suspect(s) involved in the murder of a man whose identity has been established. The body of a 40-year-old man was found near Thebe Primary School on Saturday 27 January. He had allegedly been stabbed with a sharp object. The deceased was last seen earlier the same evening on his way to a nearby tavern.

Investigators have not been able to unravel the murder so far. This is largely due to a lack of witness information which can lead to the perpetrator(s). We thus appeal to residents of Mamafubedu to come forward with information that can lead to justice.

Tweeling SAPS recovers sheep stolen in Vrede TWEELING: Two female Constables attached to Tweeling SAPS were conducting patrols at about 1:30 on the morning of 24 January when they saw a suspicious vehicle travelling on a gravel road separating two farms. The said vehicle sped off when ordered to stop. It was chased and successfully brought to a halt.

En so begin die stoute liefde… eers is dit net koffie en nou is dit heeltyd koffie en meisie weet van niks. Mens kan net wonder wat sal gebeur as die bom gaan bars. Klitsie hou die situasie dop.
