J

uly July July. If it wasn’t petrol and taxi fare increases, it was Covid-19 cases at their highest. July was a true test for all of us. However, all isn’t in vain. The016 is here to keep you informed about those doing well for themselves despite everything that’s going on around them.

Let’s start with our cover star. I approached Yinga because of her love for storytelling. I wondered what it would be like to tell her story and thankfully, she agreed to do a feature. Yinga is the proud founder of EyeOfYinga which is an entertainment company. They offer knowledge in the film and TV industries. Having worked for BET, advertising company Ebony and Ivory, Yinga is well on her way to becoming an all round film and broadcast guru.

Now for the featured stories in this issue. I linked up with Ivy Tshabalala who is The Cooking Enthusiast. She lets us know all about her journey with food. Also, we have Kgotso Ahutu who is the owner of OMK Personnel. He is passionate about HR and decided to take a leap of faith when he started his company from scratch. In our poetry corner feature this month, we have the beautiful Makhosazana Ndebele also known as M@ck@Y dE Poet. She gives us two poems this month.

Let me not give too much away. The point is to tease.

The ink master Ryza Phatzo is an illustrator, graffiti and tattoo artist.

In 2011, he started his own company called True Black Body Arts Studio and hasn’t looked back eversince.

True Black Body Arts Studio has become one of the most renowned tattoo studios in the Vaal.

Having had a graffitti background, Phatzo says Hip-Hop has had a lot of influence over his art.

eet Ryza Phatzo, illustrator, graffiti and tattoo artist and an avid Hip-Hop lover.

Phatzo is a creative and entrepreneur who has been leaving a permanent mark on his clients, literally.

Although shy in person, Ryza is also very humble. He doesn’t seem like a man of many words but his work definitely speaks on his behalf.

He says he has always been passionate about graffiti and tattooing.

“Graffiti is my first love and tattooing is my passion and livelihood.

I use my illustration skills in both tattooing and graffiti. I have always loved art and music”, he says.

Phatzo says music has always been his strongest influence growing up.

“In the early days of my encounter with Hip-Hop, I saw a graffiti piece and I completely fell in love with the art form.

From there on I started painting murals locally and then a few business people commissioned me for signage, advertising and custom artwork for their businesses.

In that period, I discovered that I could turn my artistic skills into a pro career. I then moved to Joburg

in search for greener pastures and was really fortunate to land a job at a multimedia production company. I learned to design and illustrate using design software which helped furnish my graffiti output. Then I became a popular graffiti artist in the media industry and I lived entirely off my talent. Hip-hop was always the center of my life even when I was not aware I had influence in the neighborhood and overseas through graffiti.”

“I did research around the studios in the Northern suburbs and got tips on the ins and outs of the industry.

I also enrolled for a primary skin care course, a dermatology short course to understand the do’s and don’ts regarding health and safety care in skin alterations and how to contain and sterilize my apparatus and tools. I also studied online business tutorials to help run my business.”

The search for a professional local tattoo studio “I had my first child and I wanted to have his name inked on my body but I could not find any local professional tattoo studio.

At that point, through Hip-Hop icons and artists, I had grown an intense interest in tattoos. I wanted to have my tattoos done by a professional. On my failure to acquire a pro tattoo artist locally, I saw the need as I also knew people who would have loved to get real tattoos done. In 2010, I took the decision to become a tattoo artist.

Phatzo then started conducting his research to make sure he knew as much as possible about the pros and cons of being a professional tattoo

The establishment of True Black Body Arts Studio “I established the company in 2011. On the opening year the reception was overwhelming. My clientele included celebrities, academics and professionals. I received financial help from a friend to open the first black professional tattoo studio in Newtown. I practiced for seven years in Joburg but decided to focus on bringing a studio to the Vaal in 2017. In 2018, I built the studio in Sebokeng”, says Phatzo.

Favourite part about his job “I love the job because I love spending time and learning new things from people.

As a tattoo artist, I get to meet people from

different walks of life and that presents me with the opportunity to learn so much. I always want people to walk away happy with the quality of my tattoos.”

I always advise people to ask questions regarding their curiosity, perception and expectations. The best way to sell tattoos is through word of mouth and people I have tattooed have helped sustain the business since inception.”

anana born Ivy Nandi Tshabalala is a beast in the kitchen. Her easy and healthy dishes will have you turning heads in your own kitchen. Ivy is a self-taught cook, makeup artist, mother, wife and daughter to name a few. Is there anything this superwoman can’t do?

You’re a self taught cook. What inspired you to start experimenting with cooking?

Ivy- I always loved improvising with ordinary dishes that I grew up eating and my family would enjoy them, I loved that so I thought why not share this love I have with other people through my cooking.

I like that your dishes are easy to make. Why is that important?

Ivy- I believe that cooking is not for everyone, so following long and complicated recipes is not ideal as it it would be for me, so simple dishes are a way to go so that they accommodate everyone.

When did you start learning how to cook?

Ivy- When I was 11 years old and that was after my mother passed away. She was the cook in the house so I thought why not step in her shoes but do a better job than her.

Your dishes include veggies as well. Why should people balance healthy eating?

Ivy- With so many modern sicknesses and lower percent of oxygen in the atmosphere, it’s important to help our bodies and it’s organs to function effectively and that is by consuming your vegetables and fruits.

What makes ‘The cooking enthusiast’ different from other cooks?

Ivy- The cooking enthusiast lives in the kitchen. She prepares food not only to sell and make profit, she also enjoys volunteering and sharing that love in her dishes even at ceremonies, lunches and gatherings.

Do you find cooking therapeutic?

Ivy- Of course, for me cooking is a way to nurture others and that makes me feel good because I know there are dishes that have a sense of immediate gratification.

What lessons has cooking taught you about yourself?

Ivy- That it’s important to focus on what is working for you, what makes you happy and people the around you. For me that is being in the kitchen and cooking with love.

Have you ever burned a recipe before?

Ivy- Yes [laughs] and that would cost me to start cooking afresh.

What have been your challenges ever since you started cooking?

Ivy- Shortage of ingredients in the markets at the area we live in and having to travel far for those ingredients we don’t have around. Another challenge is trying a new dish that doesn’t turn out as I anticipated.

How do you choose which dishes to cook?

Ivy- It depends on people I cook for. I choose according to their preferences or favourites.

What advice would you give to an aspiring cook?

Ivy- If you love it, live it and don’t stop learning and acquiring more knowledge about what you love doing even if you feel like everyone nowadays is doing it. That shouldn’t be a stumbling block for you to do what makes you happy.

Ivy- The positive feedback I’ve been getting from following my passion is what I loved most and, also seeing people benefit from doing what I love is the greatest feeling.

Have your family and friends been supportive of your cooking?

Ivy- Very much, they always encourage me to enter cooking Where do you see your business competitions, open a kitchen in the next 3 years? whereby I create meals every Ivy- Having kitchens and day. They recommend me to catering for important events cater for parties and events like business meetings, parties and weddings.

Why the name ‘The cooking enthusiast’?

A lot of people are afraid of Ivy- Because of the excitement following their passion. and eagerness I possess each I admire you for starting your time I’m ready to cook or try a journey. What have you loved new recipe. the most about it?

THE ALL ROUND STORYTELLER

oziyinga Precious Kunene is the perfect combination of beauty with brains.

The 23 year old Vaal born creative and entrepreneur has always had a story to tell, from film to photography.

Kunene has worked at Originators.tv editing their promos for BET channel 129.

She has done some work for Actor Spaces. Freelanced for Advertising Company, Ebony and Ivory .Kunene’s recent work was in the short film “Have things changed” which gained a lot of momentum for giving young creatives a platform to showcase their talent.

Yinga, as she is commonly called, grew up

in Sebokeng Zone 7B until she was 12 years old. Kunene and her family used to move around quite a bit.

They have lived in Sebokeng, Evaton West, Vanderbijlpark, Vaal Park and Arconpark.

“I am defined by my learning, where I grew up with my family and how that impacts me to this day. I am still a kid in front of my parents. My siblings, Ayanda and Njabulo Kunene, say I am a bit crazy.”

Kunene defines herself as self motivated, disciplined, kind and one to always tell the truth.

“I am the most unique version of myself, and which version you get to see depends on the nature of interaction.”

Upbringing Yinga was the entertainer in her family.

You know that child that was called to dance for everyone at family gatherings?

Yinga was that child.

She would even be given money after dancing.

“The power of music completely took over me and I could go on and on losing myself in that bliss. I was a bit shy too. If being an introvert was a religion and had a God, it would be me. I was dangerously creative.

Yes, I was all in for arts”.

She says she used to put in a lot of effort in any school projects.

She always tried to make them as fancy and innovative as

possible.

Bitten by the media bug Yinga worked her first job in the media space in 2018. This was while she was a third year student at Boston Media House.

“My colleagues became friends. My boss Mr Keith was more of a mentor to me. He taught me a lot about editing. Also, the feeling of seeing your work on TV is surreal.

I knew my worth from that moment.”

The first ever camera Yinga bought was the Canon 750 d. Yinga says it was easy to use, easy to carry and it was a great companion to her as a beginner.

Support structure “I think I am an extremely lucky person.

My family supports my career 100%. My mom, Nompumelelo Kunene, didn’t understand at first but she’s my number one supporter. My dad, Themba Kunene, wanted to be an actor back in the day so I think he is excited because he might get a role soon” [laughs] Yinga expressed a great deal of gratitude to her Aunt Renny Mbhele.

“She drives me to most of my gigs. She doesn’t mind waking up at 3am to drive me to Johannesburg for my gig with a call time of 6am. I appreciate her efforts.

Most of my friends are in the creative space too so they definitely support me. Lucky to have such people in my life. I don’t take this stuff for granted.”

Schooling Yinga initially wanted to go to AFDA but says the fees were ridiculous.

“Boston Media House made sense according to my parent’s budget. I had an amazing experience schooling at Boston Media House (Sandton campus). I made a few friends who I’m still in contact with.

I’ve even collaborated with some on some projects.”

Work Yinga was part of the “Have things changed” team. This was a short

film where Yinga worked as a camera operator and assistant editor.

“I thoroughly enjoyed working on this short film. So impressed by everyone’s work ethic.

The Vaal has got some dope creatives.”

For this passion project, Yinga says everyone on the team was driven by the art of storytelling.

“Everyone contributed their skills and brought their A game on set! I learned new things from everyone who was part of the crew.”

One of the best lessons Yinga has learned is to take ownership of your own success.

“No one will work as hard for you to reach your dreams. You have to do it yourself ntwana,” When faced with having to choose between photography, video editing and being a DOP, Yinga had no problem choosing her favourite of the three.

“I love being a Director of Photography/ Videographer and I can stay up all hours of the night editing videos.

Also, I love taking photos although I don’t think I take photography as seriously as I should but it [photography] feels like a passive feature to my videography or maybe I intertwine them both so well and I don’t focus on one over the other. Video editing is my favourite.”

Motherhood “Being a mother and

following your dreams at the same time can be so difficult and exhausting but it is rewarding nonetheless. I love my son and he inspires me a lot.”

Motherhood can be daunting at times.

Especially when we have had to work from home.

That dynamic on its own is a different world altogether. How does Yinga balance motherhood and work?

“Balancing my career with motherhood isn’t always easy but it can be beyond fulfilling to have the best of both worlds.

Plus, my family helps me out a lot and I am grateful for that.”

Yinga established her very own company called EyeOfYinga which she founded in 2018.

“That’s my baby. I built it from scratch and I am doing a great job at building this multimillion entertainment company [laughs]. The eye stands for one sided vision. Metaphorically, it translated as I only see my vision and no one else’s.”

One wonders what the challenges in terms of the funding of films are when it comes to the film industry.

“The process of getting funding for a film will reveal how much you want/need to bring it to life. You need to package your film as a business and prove you can make a return on investment.

Now that’s easy. The hard part is actually getting

the funds. Either it will take months to a year to get processed or you don’t get a response at all when you email.”

Often creatives are known to hide their feelings. Ironic right?

Creatives sometimes feel they will be judged for simply being human.

“There is an emotion called sadness and I feel it too. Generally, I act like a big ball of sunshine and I’m really silly and chatty. I’m not quiet and if I have an opinion I’ll most likely voice it. I like making people laugh.

Cheerful as I am, that doesn’t mean I’m always happy.”

Yinga concluded by saying she wants to be remembered for being herself.

“Being remembered is not so important to me but if such a thing were to come about, I hope my Vaal people have a few laughs, curses and cheers about time shared with me. Whether it’s a project we pulled off that changed our lives, or fun things we did. Some random argument or something that came through me that was way ahead of its time. I want to be remembered for simply being me 24/7.”

Now that you have some time to write, here are a few tips to get you started Tip #1: Know your subject well.

You have to know what you are writing about and know it well. This can range from anything you have had a personal encounter with or have recently learned. Just make sure you can answer questions should you be asked for clarity.

Tip #2: Be well informed.

The last thing you want is to be told you don’t have enough knowledge about your subject so read up on it. Ask questions. See how other people are doing it and then find your own rhythm.

It’s okay to use other people’s ideas as inspiration but always learn to put your own twist on things.

Don’t copy

Tip #3: Prepare in advance.

Prepare your writing material in advance so you know what information you could be missing. This way, you will avoid having a gap in your work. It’s Tip #4: Tease your readers. easy to tell when someone is unprepared. Readers Have posts where you make readers want more.

Engage with them and tell them what’s coming deserve well prepared content. up next. This way, they will stay engaged and will ne anticipating more content from you as you Tip #5: Post post post. write/publish more of your writing material.

Post as frequently as possible. This is a great way to keep your audience engaged. Posting also opens the door for communication between you and your audience. Post content that is relevant. Post content that is supported by research. Post content that your audience responds to the most. Also, keep your posts as flexible and real as possible.

Kgotso Ahutu is the proud owner of an HR company called OMK Personnel. Ahutu says HR has always been his passion. In his advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, Ahutu says anyting is possible as long as you belive in yourself.

What motivated you to start your HR company?

HR has always been my passion, I have experience in all HR fields. Being just an employee was not enough for me, I wanted to make a difference mostly in these small to medium organizations with no HR department or can’t afford to have one.

What gap does your company fill in the market?

It creates employment, retains talent and helps companies to maximize on profits by having a powerful workforce.

What lessons has your business taught you about yourself?

Taking “No” for an answer is sometimes not an option.

How many people does/has your company employed?

I’’ve had two seasonal staff, who mainly assisted with specific projects.

What was it like to have to trust yourself with executing your dream?

The adrenaline was inordinate; I could not contain the level of excitement I had, to finally bring my long life dream to life.

When a person wants to start a business from scratch, there are always negative voices surrounding them. How did you silence those voices?

I’ve had this idea of having my own HR practice since Varsity, it was scary back then until I got into the industry. I just followed my passion.

How long did it take you to go from having nothing at all in the starting phase to being fully established?

Like I’ve mentioned.. It’s an idea that I had in mind for years but from the execution phase, I think It took me like a month.

What did it feel like to secure your very first client?

Petrifying and exciting, I knew I would do a great job but I felt a need to prove myself each an every little chance I got.

How important is it to always respect your brand?

Quite important, I’m my own brand. People need to believe in me.

What are the do’s and don’ts of starting a business?

Do’s: Push beyond limits, outdo yourself, network and just read a lot about your field & the economy.

Don’ts: don’t expect things to come easy, don’t give up easily. Don’t take advice like “stick to your own lane.”

What relationship does your business have with your personal life? What happened in your life for you to decide to start your business?

I had all this knowledge which I felt that other people could benefit from, you’d be surprised on how little people know when it comes to labour practices and general HR principles.

We are living in tough economic times because of Covid-19. How has your business been affected by this pandemic?

I still have my potential clients on my list which should’ve been my clients by now if it wasn’t for this Pandemic, it has put a few of my contracts on hold.

My name is Makhosazana Ndebele famously known as M@cK@Y dE Poet...

I am 21 years old and I am an Electrical Engineer student At Vaal University of Technology, a Poet at heart.

I am the founder of literature revolution bookclub in Rosa Parks library in Soweto.

I am the secretary of Creative Arts and culture group in VUT A member of the Words of wonder poetry family in Vanderbijlpark.

I am a vocal, open minded person who loves Art especially poetry . I enjoy being in spaces that truly make me feel alive. I started writing at the age of 10 if I remember correctly but by then It was all about scribbling down my feelings - nothing intense. As I grew up my writing became more intense as I wrote mostly about my personal experiences and pains.. I’d describe my style of writing as Descriptive because in most cases I find myself focusing on describing a character, an event, a place with great detail. I usually visualize what I see, maybe hear or how I feel about a certain thing for example Nature etc. I am, solely inspired by my unique perspective, sometimes what inspired me comes from a place of self examination.

Real names Boipelo Sesing aka Dynasty, Bokamoso Tshabalala aka Kayzee and Itumeleng Magongwane aka Shady are all from the Vaal. Foreiign Brief description: Lehlohonolo Ivory Mosikili , better known by his stage name Foreiign, is a Vaal born singer, rapper, song writer, beat maker and entrepreneur. He has collaborated with many artists and has produced for some as well. One of his projects was the January EP produced by fellow partner KritiQue and was well received by many.
