A

ugust is my birth month so best believe I’m excited about this issue. I am proud of the amount of hours that were put in to produce this issue. This month, I learned that there’s a big enough stage for all of us to shine and that I shouldn’t be ignorant in realizing how much this magazine helps those who read it. I am thankful for all the messages I get from readers who love what we do here. Thank you all. I appreciate you. You inspire me to do more.

In this issue, you will find many things. Firstly, I want to thank Summary who is our cover star. I was nervous about a pproaching him for a feature but it was all in my head. He carries so much knowledge. He is a well of wisdom. Funny as he is, he also gets very educational and starts speaking words of affirmation.

For his shoot, we walked the street of Orange Farm. Kamohelo Mogoere was our photographer. What was beautiful was how we got stopped every few minutes because an old classmate or a childhood friend had seen him. He is loved and respected by his community. It was truly wonderful to see.

To Summary, thank you for being so humble. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to tell your story.

This issue includes a dedication to some incredible women who are doing beautiful things in their respective fields. In celebration of Women’s Month, we celebrate them. We are inspired by them.

Also, Zandile Finxa is back with some delicious food. She’s a qualified recipe developer who has been gracing us with her easy and health recipes. We love learning how to cook from her because she explains complicated recipes so effortlessly. She gave us five recipes to try out this month.

Resego Dingalo is a TB survivor. South Africa has the 5th highest TB cases in the world. This young woman beat the odds and gives us her testimony. She explains when she was diagnosed, what her treatment was like and how she is now that she has fully recovered. We celebrate her for her bravery. Her story is one of faith and I hope our readers will take away some powerful lessons from Resego’s experience.

To my reader, thank you for taking the time to read what the team and I produce every month. Thank you for supporting our dream. We hope you learn about the Vaal as much as we do every single time we search for authentic stories. Till next month.

range Farm born Summary has a love for making people laugh. The comedian, entertainer and dancer who describes himself as observant and highly opinionated is a prime example that one should never forget where they come from.

“I love mankind for what it is and the goodness it has, not for what it has turned out to be at this days and age. I stand for respect and humbleness because that is a base or a foundation of a healthy relationship for humanity. In short, I am a very reserved person even though my character says otherwise.”

Growing up, Summary was a naughty, very energetic and funny child. He used to give his mom a headache as he had no time for studying because he was lazy. He wasn’t friends with books at all which would cause him to fail at school.

However, even though he was a child, he never disrespected his parents.

“I was naughty but not disrespectful. I just didn’t do what a child was expected to do like studying and being at home.”

Being a creative in virtual times With Covid-19 being upon us, how has Summary been coping? How has Covid-19 affected his gigs?

“I have been coping very well even though at the beginning I had anxiety about the pandemic thinking what’s going to happen with us as artists but eventually I calmed down and knew that at this time worrying will bring more stress and depression. So I just let thing be and kept myself safe and my family. Covid-19 has affected gigs drastically because we do events and now we can’t do anything.

Summary has been very active on his social media pages during the lockdown, which has been well received by his audience. Why does he think it’s important for artists to adapt especially when they can’t go out and perform during this time?

“What’s not growing is dying therefore as an artist you have to grow and adapt or else you’ll perish. It is vital that an artist keeps their head up high during this time and not let this kill their creativity because sometimes if you don’t show up then you put your brand at risk. You could lose your audience and you could end up not gaining new clientele so being active on social media keeps the brand afloat in the market. gain more audience which brings business. So be active and engage with your audience. Also, it helps keep stress away.”

What lessons has Summary learned now that he is a public figure?

“Don’t look outside look within.

Everything that you want is within not outside. The people out there want the same thing as you so they won’t give you best advice or help. Be humble, work hard and act dumb until you can stand on your feet. Don’t do what other artists do, fame chasing, living a luxurious life when you don’t have enough money to sustain or maintain that life. Don’t let fame be the reason why you doing it.

Don’t compete. Be you even when it’s tough to be you because being you is the truth that will set you apart from the rest.”

August is Women’s month, what are your thoughts on Gender Based Violence?

“One thing I know is that there’s no reason to kick or punch a woman. If she beats you, don’t hit back. Women should never settle for a man who hits them. If he does, please stay away from such a man. If she hits you brother leave her as well. Just don’t hit her back because it makes things worse.”

He advises men to open up or seek professional help instead of resorting to violence.

“We can’t afford to lose more women due to all this violence done by men. There’s no reason to kill or hit a woman. If she cheats, leave and find counseling or talk to someone you trust. Men don’t talk and sometimes this makes matters worse so we need to open up.”

Rainbow bowl Ingredients: - Chia Pudding in Coconut yoghurt - Cherries - Rolled Oats - Marula Nut Butter - Strawberries - Blueberries - Cinnamon infused honey - Frozen mango - Dried Fruit, seeds and nuts

Baked falafel Makes 8/9 Ingredients: - 1 tin of chickpeas, drained - 5 tbs chickpea flour - 1 tbs nutritional yeast (optional) - 1 tsp onion powdeer - 1tsp cumin, ground - 2 tbs parsely, fresh

- TT salt and pepper - Olive oil for drizzling

Method 1. Mash chickpeas and add in the rest of the ingredients (this method can be quicker by pulsing in a food processor).

2. Use a spoon to scoop portions of the chickpea mix, roll into balls and gently flatten.

3. Lightly drizzle oven tray with olive oil, place the chickpea portions 4. Bake at 190 degrees for 20 minutes, turn halfway.

5. Served with oven baked fries, celery, olives and dill mayo.

Falafel topped with tahini and sesame seeds.

Celery and split pea soup Ingredients: - 1 onion, chopped - 1 cup of slpit green peas - 3 garlic cloves, minced - 1/2 head cauliflower - 1 tbs fresh ginger, finely minced/grated - 3 tsp parsely, chopped - 1 tbs onion powder - TT salt and pepper - 1 tsp tumeric - 1 lt vegetable stock - 1 tsp cimin - Canola oil for sauteing - 1 cup of celery with leaves, chopped

Method 1, In a pot over medium heat, add drizzle of oil. Saute the onions until softened 2. Add in garlic, cooking for about 2 minutes before adding in the ginger, onion powder, tumeric and cumin.

Cooking for a minutes or two to ensure spices are all well incorporated.

3. To this mix in the celery, split green peas, cauliflower and parsely. Topping off with the stock.

4. Cook for about 30 minutes (the veggies will be soft). Season to taste and blend until smooth.

Note: Please allow the liquid to cool before using a cup of blender. Once blended, it can be reheated to serve.

LIFE STORY

Surviving

Tuberculosis Tuberculosis is a disease caused by bacteria that are spread through the air from person to person. It mainly affects the lungs. If not treated properly, TB can be fatal. People infected with TB bacteria who are not sick can take medication to prevent TB disease from developing in the future. TB has been a serious public health issue in South Africa.

According t o the Copenhagen Consensus Center, about 450 000 people develop the disease every year, and 270 000 of those are also living with HIV. TB is South Africa’s leading cause of death. About 89 000 people die from it every year; that’s ten people every hour.

Resego Dinaglo is a TB survivor. This phenomenal woman was diagnosed last year and has come back to tell her story.

We celebrate and congratulate her strength, courage and bravery. She’s an inspiration to us and to many others who could not live to tell their story.

Who is Resego?

I’m a hard working and dedicated young lady born in the Vaal. I enjoy working with people and I enjoy learning new things. I am vibrant and shy at times.

Music is my life as I’m also a chorister. I am committed in the Lord’s work. I have a very unique laugh.

When were you diagnosed?

My late uncle was diagnosed with TB. Remember this is airborne and by the time he was sick we took care of him at home without knowing much about it.

I started having back pain, losing weight, fatigue, loss of appetite and I was sweating a lot. With all this said I was diagnosed with TB (Pulmonary Tuberculosis) via x-ray in early December 2019.

What did TB teach you about yourself?

This taught me to fend for myself and not take to heart how people looked at me or take heed to any of the things they said behind my back. However, I really had a supportive, loving and caring family, neighbours, colleagues and congregation that stood by me through it all. It wasn’t easy but they made it bearable and I’ll forever be grateful for that. Words simply can’t describe how thankful I am as I gained siblings, younger and older than me. Their support helped me be stronger than before.

How was it like being told you had TB? It was really difficult and heartbreaking at the same time because I didn’t know why this was happening t o me. But then I remembered that I am a warrior who could conquer anything through faith, prayer and belief that the Lord was still with me. The very first step was to accept it and believe strongly that I shall recover.

How did you find ways of incorporating TB in your daily routine?

Having to incorporate it in my daily routine wasn’t easy at all because I couldn’t do much for myself anymore.

People around me who didn’t know already had their own diagnosis; I could sometimes feel the way they looked at me. I had to take a lot of medication for six months. Hygiene was of most importance because my immune system was too fragile and so I had to start a healthier lifestyle which included vegetables in every meal and I also had

What challenges did you face along the way?

Facing other people was a major obstacle. Well, we all know how society can be. I couldn’t do much for myself and it affected my self esteem drastically.

Now that you have fully recovered from TB, what would you like to teach others about it?

TB is curable. You as an individual need to have self discipline and you have to do things accordingly. These include taking medication at the exact time daily. Going for your check-ups is also important. I urge people to research about TB and learn how to live with it. I believe that everything has a start and an end but how you choose to reach your destination is within you.
