The landscape of private higher education in the United States is changing. Increased scrutiny about the value and cost of schools, a national-leaning toward vocational education; the free-tuition movement, and the variety of choices for students including dual enrollment, online education and rise in community and technical colleges are but a few of the factors contributing to a difficult climate for universities like Reinhardt.

Aware of this evolving landscape, Reinhardt will adapt and change as needed as we lift up our vision to create a unique Reinhardt experience where each student thrives. We will hold true to our bold mission of a holistic education educating the intellectual, spiritual, personal, social and physical dimensions of our students. We will continue challenging students to think and respond critically and creatively, to write and speak clearly and persuasively, to reason quantitatively, to engage in collaborative problemsolving and to view the world with compassion and hope. Reinhardt knows our value in the higher education market, and we will continue focusing in the areas Reinhardt has always metwith excellence.

First, Reinhardt will continue to provide personalized education that can be customized to the individual student. Because of the personal relationships that develop at Reinhardt, faculty advise their students in ways that bring more benefit than just the selection of courses including advising them on career choices, international study options, internships and parttime work opportunities. Faculty will continue partnering with students in service-learning projects and undergraduate research activities as they continue to serve as wise listeners when students face personal challenges.

Second, Reinhardt will continue to be entrepreneurial and innovative. Because Reinhardt is not hampered with the bureaucracy of public institutions, we have the flexibility to partner with businesses, nonprofits and industry, adapting our programs to their needs. Additionally, faculty will continue to engage in conversations, teaching and research across disciplines broadening the lens of their students to value the expertise of others and view the world as connected, complex and ever-changing.

Third, Reinhardt will continue to provide a transformative education. Over the last four years, I have heard many alumni tell their Reinhardt stories about how their time at Reinhardt changed their lives.

Recently, I had dinner with an alumnus who had been raised in the foster care system. When he came to Reinhardt to play basketball, it was his third school.

Reinhardt believed in him, challenged him, encouraged him and showed him a pathway forward for a very successful future in sales. He now is in his early 40s, has two children, has moved back to the community, and is eager to share his story with current students and to support the University financially.

Finally, Reinhardt will continue to provide community.

Throughout our history, what alumni value most often is the feeling

of community, often referring to Reinhardt as their family. Here, students develop the confidence they need to try new things, experience new adventures, thrive in positions of leadership, becoming exposed to new ideas and ways of thinking. They develop life-long friendships, not only with their peers, but with the faculty who teach them and the staff who nurture them.

Wendell Berry, American writer, wrote, “The thing being made in a university is humanity. What universities ... are mandated to make or to help to make is human beings in the fullest sense of those words - not just trained workers or knowledgeable citizens, but responsible heirs and members of human culture.”

This is the Reinhardt Experience.

We are accepting the bold mission to develop humanity and those of you reading this letter are co-creators of this mission. Imagine a group of runners running the race of their lives. The stands are full of caring, committed, enthusiastic fans cheering them on.

That is Reinhardt. Students running the race of life and learning, and faculty, staff, fellow students, alumni, donors, community members, family and friends cheering them on.

The Value of Healthy Choices Reinhardt’s Student Health Center creates balance in a hectic academic life.

C

ollege may be time to prepare for a career, but it’s also the time to prepare for the future. While priorities remain in academics, the holistic education students receive at Reinhardt University goes far beyond the textbooks, often translating into a busy schedule of researching, athletic practices, performance rehearsals, extra hours in the laboratory, student organization meetings—not to mention squeezing in a moment to attend a campus event to make lifelong memories with friends.

It can be a challenge for students to find a healthy balance amidst rigorous schedules, and that’s where the Student Health Center steps in.

Reinhardt’s Student Health Center offers a number of services provided through the campus nurse, Kristy Hough, and the campus counselor, Adam Powell.

Both Hough and Powell offer their services confidentially, a valuable resource for students to openly and honestly discuss their needs. Nurse Hough treats minor illnesses and injuries, assessing and referring more serious problems to other health care resources, checks blood pressure and administers over-the-counter treatment. Powell offers a variety of counseling services to individuals, couples and groups. As part of the

University, they also work to educate students on a healthy lifestyle.

Hough said her position at Reinhardt is unique because her job description is broader than past nursing positions, and she’s able to collaborate with other offices on campus to teach students, faculty and staff what it means to be well.

“I embrace the ability to make a difference on campus and enjoy showing students how to take control of their own personal health and wellbeing, something I hope will stick with them throughout their lives,” said Hough.

“I enjoy being able to teach and watch students grow and learn instead of the ‘treat and street’ mentality of the hospital. You can actually see what your seeds have sown in the community.”

Due to the size of Reinhardt’s campus, Powell is also able to see the difference he’s making in the lives of students.

“I appreciate the close-knit atmosphere of the campus, as well as the opportunity to make a noticeable impact. The small community feel extends from departments across campus and with the students,” said Powell. “This also allows you the chance to see how you’ve impacted others.”

That impact often comes in the form of education, especially in terms of the choices students make and how those choices allow them to take control of their personal health.

“I try to include teaching in all aspects of your time in our health center,” Hough said. “Whether it is blood pressure, blood sugar, strep testing, healthy eating, sleeping habits, I try to help the student understand what exactly is going on in their bodies and why. Everything we teach at the Student Health Center is backed by American Nurses Association best practice standards. We also provide students with fun activities throughout the year to help engage them in conversations about their health.”

One event that engaged students in conversations about their health

included the Health Fair, where local health resources joined Hough and Powell in the Bannister Glasshouse to raise awareness and provide information on a variety of topics.

Opportunities like the Health Fair contribute to Powell’s favorite part of his job, which he said is “the chance to engage with students and assist them toward achieving their goals and overcoming obstacles.”

“I love helping others to reach their optimal ability, realize their potential and make improvements toward a healthy lifestyle.”

In addition to education, Hough also feels she is learning alongside the experiences she has with students.

“I embrace the ability to make a difference on campus and enjoy showing students how to take control of their own personal health and wellbeing, something I hope will stick with them throughout their lives.”

Kristy Hough CAMPUS NURSE Kristy Hough started at Reinhardt in Fall 2018 to learn and grow in the higher education nursing field. She graduated from the University of South Florida with a bachelor’s in Biomedical Sciences/Pre-medicine in 2006, and from Pasco-Hernando State College in April 2007 as a Registered Nurse. Hough has worked in Intensive Care Units in Florida, Texas and Georgia.

“I love how the students will challenge our thinking and make us strive to be the best in our professions. I am learning new things every day, not only in the field of nursing, but in all fields we offer on our campus,” said Hough. “My heart is so full here at Reinhardt.”

Hough wants students to know that all Student Health Center services are free and confidential, and that students’ health is her number one priority.

“I want to be here in every facet of college life to give our students the knowledge to make good, healthy choices. I want our students to know no matter what they are facing with their health, whether a new diagnosis or not, they can overcome and conquer.”

CAMPUS COUNSELOR Adam Powell started at Reinhardt in Fall 2018 after experiencing the atmosphere of the campus and recognizing the opportunity to make an impact. He holds a bachelor’s in Marketing from James Madison University and a master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of North Carolina. Powell has worked in the health and wellness, fitness and counseling industries, secondary education, and both small and large universities.

From backpack to briefcase RU Leads teaches students critical leadership skills

“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.”

T

hose were some of the words President John F. Kennedy was prepared to deliver on that infamous day in Dallas, Texas in 1963, and they ring true more than 50 years later.

While the academic programs at Reinhardt University prepare students to enter their future career fields confidently with the education they receive from experienced professors, the Office of Student Affairs is complementing classroom learning with development of soft skills and leadership through a program launched last year.

RU Leads serves to develop students professionally and personally in order to help them transition from the classroom

setting to the workplace, a program that demonstrates Reinhardt’s holistic approach to education.

Dean of Students Dr. Walter May believes students participating in RU Leads develop a better understanding of key soft skills because the program provides opportunities to learn and practice how they can complement existing skills.

“Many students are so focused on developing expertise in their field of study that they may neglect to realize how important it is to actively work on skills like teamwork, communication, time management and

conflict resolution,” said May. “These skills are critical in the workplace and being able to demonstrate them can really help a student stand out in today’s competitive job market.”

PayScale conducted a survey revealing 60 percent of employers reporting that young employees aren’t prepared for the workplace due to insufficient critical thinking and soft skills.

With hard skills often the focus in the classroom, the RU Leads program offers lessons on soft skills, such as interpersonal skills, social skills, communication skills, attitudes, teamwork and leadership abilities.

SO MUCH MORE THAN A LEADER “At Reinhardt, we believe that soft skills training has a positive impact on workplace outcomes for our graduates, such as recruitment, retention, productivity and job satisfaction.

Developing our students’ soft skills builds their leadership capacity in a sustainable way,” said May. Director of Vocation and Career Services Karen Mathews said the events – which included a fall conference, monthly workshops and an end-of-the-year etiquette dinner – were created with all students in mind, but they can specifically enhance the leadership abilities of students in leadership positions on campus.

“The target audience was all students with a specific focus on student leaders, work-study students and any who desired to build their leadership acumen,” said Mathews.

Based on their research, RU Leads invited special guests, faculty and staff to explore a variety of topics critical to success in today’s workplace, such as developing grit, finding purpose, creating a healthy balance and networking.

RU Leads not only incorporates Reinhardt’s efforts to educate the whole person, it also carries out the goals of the Quality Enhancement Plan, “Where in the World RU Going?,” which highlights High Impact Practices through internships, study abroad, service learning and research opportunities to give students real-world experience, strengthen their understanding of the world and provide them a good foundation for success.

“Learning about, practicing and demonstrating soft skills are important for more than just our students’ careers; it’s important for succeeding in their everyday life,” May said.

JAMIE JOHNSTON | ASSISTANT DEAN OF STUDENTS

C

ompetition drives her personally, but descriptions of her paint a picture that reflects passion, beauty and truth.

In her daily work, Johnston is always ready to be a listening ear, give a pep talk or solve a problem.

“Jamie has continually sought out challenges and opportunities to grow during her time here at Reinhardt and is a dedicated student advocate who wholeheartedly supports the mission of Reinhardt,” said Dr. Walter P. May, dean of students.

Johnston championed reprogramming and services offered through Student Affairs, led the recruiting and onboarding of a new team in Student Affairs and has made great strides in helping students who need a little help finding their way.

And she does it all with a great attitude and a smile.

“I could be helping a student through our early alert system who simply needed a listening ear or campus resource or a student that made a bad decision and had to go through our conduct system. These

situations allow me to help students realize their own potential, helping them identify their roadblocks and navigate through or around them.”

While she has inspired others to stay positive and be their best, Johnston finds her inspiration in her strong relationship with her grandfather.

“My biggest inspiration is my Grandpa Hornke. He was my very best friend. He always gave the best advice and hands down was my No. 1 supporter,” she said.

If he were still living, Grandpa Hornke would be proud of his “sidekick.” After only a year on board at Reinhardt, Johnston earned the promotion of assistant dean of students and this summer was named one of the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce’s “Top 10 in 10 Young People to Watch.”

Even though she spends a lot of time helping around campus, she finds time to enjoy being with her husband and their two chocolate labs, Emma Jo and Reese.

Looking back on her own experiences as a Reinhardt student, keynote speaker Alicia Ivey encouraged the class of 2019 to look within themselves for success, to work hard and to remember that the possibilities are endless. Ivey shared her story of grit and perseverance that led to her successful career as president/CEO of Goldbergs Concession and president of Phoenix Drilling Corp.

“If you remember nothing else from today, engrave this in your being: Success lives in you. I challenge each of you – each and everyone here today – to be successful (because you can); live on purpose (because it is His will); love deeply (because we must); and finally, whenever you have the opportunity, and don’t be afraid to make the opportunity, share your success.”

Impactful Nursing Experience

G

eorge Seddon left for Ecuador this summer with skills he learned from the Cauble School of Nursing & Health Sciences and returned with a stronger understanding of the importance of meaningful bonds.

“When we have the opportunity to remove our figurative masks and lay down our pretentious identities and instead risk laying bare our true selves to other people, we build meaningful bonds that enrich our lives,” the senior nursing major said. “These mission trip experiences have shown me the beauty of living in close relationship with other people, a closeness which is difficult to replicate in the business of our daily lives here in America.”

Seddon was one of the two students selected by the Abbie DeLoach Foundation to work with Nurses for Nations. The goal of the trip was to address the physical and spiritual needs of the communities Seddon and his mission team were serving.

“With this goal in mind, we conducted house visits, set up clinics where people could receive medical assessments, medicine, corrective eyewear and prayer,” Seddon said.

“Over the course of a week, our team came into

contact with hundreds of people seeking healthcare for a variety of reasons, two of the major reasons being infections and intestinal parasites.”

Seddon, who is scheduled to graduate this December as part of the first Cauble School cohort, said he is thankful to the Abbie DeLoach Foundation for giving him the opportunity to serve and for its mission of carrying on Abbie’s legacy.

After graduation, Seddon hopes to continue his work as a nurse with aspirations of being part of an emergency room team.

“To begin my career as a nurse, I hope to start in a Medical Surgical unit,” he said. “However, as my career advances and I gain more experience, I may transition over to the Emergency Department so I can gain more experience caring for patients in critical situations.”

TRAUMA DRAMA Live simulation promotes Donate Life Month

W

hen tragedy strikes a family and they lose a loved one in a traumatic way, the first thing on their minds is not typically saving the life of another.

That’s why Reinhardt University and the Cauble School of Nursing & Health Sciences partnered with Life Force 3 and LifeLink to bring the important message of organ donation to campus in April.

“The exercise was one of learning and practice for our student nurses, much like they do on a regular basis in their classes. It was also an event

for community engagement and awareness, not only for Reinhardt but for organ donation and the dangers of texting and driving, as well,” said Dr. Glynis Blackard, founding dean of the Cauble School of Nursing & Health Sciences.

The simulation included a fictious character – a Reinhardt student named Chuck Mercer – who was texting and driving while traveling to meet his friends in Canton. He crosses the centerline of Ga. 140, hits a truck head-on and sustains a brain injury on impact.

The more than 150 guests in attendance exited University Theater to witness Life Force 3 bring the patient to “Reinhardt University Medical Center,” a fictitious hospital where Mercer was taken.

As radio traffic is communicated, the Life Force 3 air ambulance approached University Theater and landed in the parking lot near waiting Reinhardt student nurses ready to receive the patient.

The actual patient is “Apollo,” one of the Cauble School of Nursing & Health Sciences’ high-fidelity simulators used daily by student nurses in simulation class.

Over the next hour, Dr. Austin Flint – a longtime Canton physician and Reinhardt University Trustee – served as the Emergency Room doctor alongside student nurses and Reinhardt nursing faculty doing all they could to save the patient’s life. When they realize all efforts have been exhausted, LifeLink is called to speak to the family, played by faculty members Brian Osborne and Kimberly Parker.

Representatives from LifeLink, the organ procurement organization in Georgia, took a moment to share their message about organ donation. Tim Hand, a LifeLink family coordinator, said he and the 19 others like him across the state try to give hope to a grieving family.

“It’s a kind of hope that through their loved one’s passing and through their death, they and their story will continue,” he said. “The final chapter of that patient is not one of a motor vehicle accident. The final chapter is one of giving someone life or giving someone sight and giving somebody else hope.”

ONLINE PROGRAMS ENRICH REINHARDT'S LEARNING EXPERIENCE

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN SPORT ADMINISTRATION AND LEADERSHIP

Georgia now has its first 100 percent online sport-based master’s degree program at a private institution.

This fall brought the first cohort of Reinhardt’s Master of Science in Sport Administration and Leadership.

“We saw a need for a fully sport-based online master’s program in the state of Georgia, and students already are responding,” said Dr. Joe Mullins, sport studies & PE program coordinator. “The program provides advanced skills for sports professionals looking to enter

leadership or administration positions in all aspects of the sports industry.”

As Georgia’s first fully accredited online master’s degree related to sports offered at a private institution, students can complete their degree in only one year. And they will benefit from a unique opportunity: earning their graduate degree with the flexibility of completing courses online while having the ability to work closely with faculty.

The program consists of eight, threecredit courses online and a six-credit hour professional capstone experience, in which students may choose to complete a 180-hour internship or a master’s project demonstrating excellence in the field.

Program outcomes include exhibiting leadership behaviors consistent with ethical sport administrators and applying communications and technology competencies required of sport administrators. Graduates from this program will also be able to analyze current and historical issues impacting sport administrators and integrate solutions to develop positive organizational cultures. Additionally, they will be able to comprehend the broader role of sport in society.

he online Associate of Business Administration, Bachelor of Business Administration, Associate of Science in Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Healthcare Administration and RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing are all customized for the online learning atmosphere.

“Our online degree programs allow working professionals who are not able to come to an in-person class to receive the same education 100 percent online,” said Provost Mark Roberts. “Reinhardt is always responding to the needs of the community and answering the call for working professionals who want to further their education.”

Through the help of multiple corporate partnerships, Reinhardt University professionals are collaborating with local organizations to give their employees the option of earning a Reinhardt education while working full-time.

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Educational Pathway agreement was formed just over a year ago, and nine CSO employees have taken advantage of the partnership.

Since the inception of the first Educational Pathway, partnerships have been formed with Chick-fil-A Canton, the Cherokee Marshal’s Office and Cherokee County, and more are forthcoming.

“Our Educational Pathways agreements are a great option for organizations, whether public or private, to support their employees’ goals of earning their degrees,” said Julie Fleming, vice president for enrollment management and marketing. “While many management positions require advanced degrees, organizations can foster support for their employees to further their education and therefore promote within.”

ince starting his career at Reinhardt University in 2012, Dr. Mason Conklin continues to prove himself as a valuable asset to the music program and the University as a whole.

Conklin began his journey at Reinhardt teaching piano lessons and as an adjunct professor for music theory. Two years later, he taught a full-time course load, and in 2015, signed a contract with a tenure track. Fall 2018 brought an even bigger transition as Conklin stepped into the role of director for The Goizueta Foundation-funded Center for Innovative Teaching and Engaged Learning (CITEL).

“My new position has given me the opportunity to become re-amazed with the incredible faculty we have at Reinhardt. I get to interact with more of the faculty, and it is invigorating to be a part of such a diverse, talented and innovative community,” Conklin said. “This vibrant group is doing amazing things with our students, and I’m thrilled to be able to assist our faculty as they seek out opportunities for our students to share their academic accomplishments.”

During his days as a music professor for the School of Performing Arts, Conklin often adapted his courses to utilize the latest technology, allowing students to take him outside the classroom. He even spent the time to create a website for his piano students that provided what they needed as they practiced. Conklin’s ability to provide necessary connections with his music students is a skill that now translates on a larger scale as he connects Reinhardt University with the community in search of engaging opportunities for students and innovative resources for faculty.

“When faculty are able to develop and learn new things, and they can bring those to their courses, it really invigorates a person’s teaching. It injects some new life, some new perspectives to the classroom experience and that will affect the student.”

One of Conklin’s career aspirations included moving into an administrative position, and while he had not quite seen

himself working in faculty development, he always wanted his service to the art of music to allow musicians to focus on their music. His desire to serve Reinhardt’s faculty carries a similar tune.

“I’m looking to be of service, expanding on and contributing to the amazing work our professors do and trying to do it in a way that doesn’t increase their burdens.”

Part of Conklin’s job description includes overseeing the Quality Enhancement Plan, where he focuses on high impact practices, such as internships, studying abroad, undergraduate research and service learning. All the while, his new position maintains his enthusiasm for Reinhardt.

“Every day I’m learning something new, and every day I’m encountering new challenges that I hadn’t quite thought about before but that are fun puzzles to contemplate and to get through.”

With his new role in higher education, Conklin’s perspectives of the University continue to grow.

“The higher education sector is undergoing a time of change and upheaval as colleges and universities compete for students and other sources of funding. As a smaller school, Reinhardt has proven to be a nimble adapter in this climate responding to the developing needs of our region, and our faculty are adept at handling new challenges and finding new niches where we can grow and provide a highly engaging academic experience.”

Conklin hopes his efforts spark the curiosity of faculty and students alike with the resources provided by the Center. While continuing to learn, he often finds himself turning to those colleagues for guidance when entering unfamiliar territory.

“I’ve learned to take advantage of mentor relationships to help guide me through these processes, and I’ve learned that most of the time, the most efficient path forward is to consult my colleagues. There have been many times when my imperfect understanding of an issue is clarified with a quick sit-down with a more experienced faculty member.”

Laucella joins CITEL as Assistant Director

T

hroughout her years in higher education, Lydia Laucella’s interest in bettering education blossomed. Her new role as Assistant Director of Reinhardt’s Center for Innovative Teaching and Engaged Learning (CITEL) allows her to explore and implement improvements to the educational experience for all involved.

Over the last five years, Laucella taught First Year Seminar courses and Elementary Italian at Reinhardt University and several first-year courses at Kennesaw State University. She feels her collective experiences as a part-time faculty member provides insight into ways to serve Reinhardt’s faculty with the CITEL. “As a former part-time faculty member, I understand the unique struggles that part-time faculty can sometimes face when working in higher education,” said Laucella.

Developing outreach opportunities piqued Laucella’s interest for the position. She began the foundational steps during her work as a professor.

“In my own courses, I experimented with different pedagogical approaches to innovative teaching and engaged learning, which helped me to eventually find my own path in teaching. But, I also became experienced in these approaches, so I worked as a faculty mentor and found that I wanted more agency to facilitate faculty and students in their teaching and learning journeys.”

As assistant director, Laucella will support faculty through training, one-on-one consultations, workshops and resource documents that cover course design, new and innovative pedagogies and, of course, creating engaging learning experiences in the classroom.

“I am a visionary, and my biggest hope for CITEL is that we can develop wide-reaching, dynamic conversations with our faculty, students and community and extend these conversations so we become a beacon of innovation and engagement in our region, even nationally.”

With Reinhardt’s knowledgeable and talented faculty and dedicated student body, Laucella feels honored to hold her position and humbled to serve the University.

“Through the funds made available by The Goizueta Foundation, we have supported 20 students with almost $10,000 to allow travel to regional conferences, national competitions and to support undergraduate research,” Conklin said. “Additional funds have assisted our professors as they present in international conferences, attend specific training workshops in their field and help frame the conference experience for students traveling with them.

“I’m particularly excited about funding new equipment that will help the Digital Media Arts program tell the amazing stories of our faculty and students. CITEL will be showcasing the innovative teachers at Reinhardt and in our surrounding community as we get ready to host our first Teaching and Learning conference next summer,” he added.

Looking into the new academic year, Conklin said the CITEL will focus on spearheading efforts to increase High Impact Practices in course offerings.

“We are really excited about the service learning project that Dr. Walter May is implementing in our Freshman Year Seminar course this fall,” he said. “Reinhardt is partnering with Junior Achievement of Georgia to bring financial literacy to sixth-, seventhand eighth-graders through simulations. Our first-year students will be assisting in these simulations, gaining valuable service experience and enhancing their own understanding of personal finance through the process.”

The pair traveled to Washington, D.C. to study original documents from the 18th Century at the Folger Shakespeare Library. Gray also was the recipient of the inaugural CITEL Engaged Learner Award last spring.

Biology major Collin Durant ’19 attended the Association of Southeastern Biologists annual meeting in Memphis, Tennessee April 3-6 to present his research on spring ephemera. English major Jessica Fanczi ’19 attended the National Conference for Undergraduate Research in Kennesaw on April 12.

First-year students Beth Day, Beau Wilkins and Rose Nielsen took their research to the 2019 Conference of the Southern Regional Honors Council in March.

Wilkins, along with psychology seniors Alessandra Viera and Pablo Gomez-Grau and first-year students Ben Gossett, Brandon Wix and Victoria Ross, attended the 65th Annual Psychological Association Conference in Florida.

The CITEL afforded School of Performing Arts students and faculty the opportunity to compete in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition in June. After being selected through the Southeastern Region NATS competition, Hannah Reich, Nick

DiPuma, Gage Nesbit, Victoria Hill and Mary Allia Endredi ’19 attended the National Student Auditions and the NATS National Summer Workshop at St. Olaf College in Minnesota.

The three-day trip also included workshops for faculty and students that focused on diction and provided voice instructors with intensive sessions on languages such as Russian, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and lessons to refresh German and French. Assistant professor of music Dr. Reverie Berger, adjunct professor of music Pedros Carreras and Dr. Rebecca Salter, associate professor of music - applied voice, accompanied the five students not only for support, but to gain knowledge to bring back to their classes.

“Both faculty members and students are grateful to have received grant funding from The Goizueta Foundation,” said Salter. “Attendance at these workshops has allowed faculty to expand their knowledge of lesserperformed languages and they are all excited to incorporate their new skills and repertoire ideas into their teaching in years to come.”

“I hope to have a career as both a performer and voice teacher, and this competition provided me information relevant to both,” said Reich. “Competing offers an incredible opportunity to learn more about my own voice and gain valuable feedback through the comments I get.”

etired educator Karen Hawley enjoys being in the classroom, and her part-time collegiate teaching career is now a full-time job. Hawley starts the Fall 2019 semester with a promotion to assistant professor of education and coordinator of Reinhardt’s Master of Education program.

Hawley spent more than 30 years in education, beginning as a classroom teacher. She developed into fulfilling leadership roles of assistant principal and principal.

Hawley joined Reinhardt as an adjunct professor teaching in the Price School of Education before being chosen to lead the Master of Education program.

“The mission of the M.Ed. program at Reinhardt University is to transform professional educators into distinguished responsive classroom teachers, action researchers and instructional leaders to make a profound difference in the lives of students,” Hawley said.

The Master of Education 18-month program allows teachers to continue their career while expanding their abilities to take on new challenges.

It also allows teachers to select a STEM or Gifted Endorsement for their degree.

The program Karen Hawley is designed for certified Early Childhood Education (P-5) professionals who completed one year of full-time classroom experience and want to earn a master’s degree in a professional learning community. Students take one face-to-face class and one online class per eight weeks in a cohort, hybrid learning model, where students take all 11 required courses together.

Reinhardt receives federal grant for STEM education

VULCAN TEACHING EXCELLENCE AWARD The recipient of the Vulcan Teaching Excellence Award was Dr. Anne Good, associate professor of history. The annual award is given through the Georgia Independent College Association and sponsored by Vulcan Materials Company’s Southeast Division. “Winning this award means a great deal to me. It is a wonderful feeling to know that a student remembered my work in and out of the classroom and cared enough to nominate me,” said Good. “We have so many talented, interesting faculty members at this University—it just makes me very happy that the committee saw merit in my work.”

The National Science Foundation has chosen Reinhardt University to receive nearly $1 million in grant funding to enhance science and math education. The NSC awarded the University the five-year Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program to create the STEM Teacher Education and Development Program.

Over five years, Reinhardt is expected to receive $930,000 for the STEM Teacher Education and Development Program and will fund student scholarships, teacher stipends, research and a STEM Summer Camp.

District teachers. It also opens up scholarship opportunities for students who receive their associate’s degree in a related field from Chattahoochee Technical College and enroll at Reinhardt to finish their bachelor’s degree.

“We are designing a program that is going to develop high school math and science teachers,” Associate Provost Jacob Harney said. “The Scholars will gain teaching experience by working side by side with certified teachers and professors as instructors in a STEM Summer Camp.”

The scholarship funds will be distributed to eligible Reinhardt juniors and seniors who major in STEM biology or math. The Reinhardt graduates will then take their knowledge to a Title I public school in Cherokee or Pickens County and teach for at least two years.

Every academic year, the school deans identify a Reinhardt faculty member who has contributed significantly to their academic discipline. The contribution is usually scholarship published by a peer-reviewed journal or an academic publishing house. Such work distinguishes the faculty members in his or her field and brings a strong academic reputation to Reinhardt University. “Collaborating with my students to research and write the article on the racial integration of Reinhardt is a highlight of my professional career.

The work we did together combined my love for teaching and for the historical past in an uplifting way,” said Wheeler. “It gives me great satisfaction to contribute to our selfknowledge, to make aspects of our university and this place better known and better understood.”

FACULTY ARTISTIC AWARD The Faculty Artistic Award was received by Bill Walsh, coordinator of the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. Reinhardt University’s community of fine and performing artists contributes to the enrichment of our campus culture through musical performances, theatrical productions, literary readings and art exhibitions. The Faculty Artistic Award is given each year to a deserving faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in artistic production or performance both on campus and in his or her field of expertise.

CITEL INNOVATIVE TEACHING AWARD Dr. Cheryl Brown, professor of sociology, is the first recipient of the Center for Innovative Teaching and Engaged Learning Innovative Teaching Award. The mission of the CITEL is to foster a campus culture that values collaboration and interaction among teachers and students in order to nurture innovation and the practice of teaching and to emphasize the role of engagement in learning. Giving of one’s self for the good of others is a sacrifice not all are willing to make. It takes a special person to serve, giving of their time, their compassion and their knowledge.

P

ublic service is a key building block of a successful community. Good hearts and great skills, coupled with strong leadership, create a solid foundation for future leaders to build upon.

JoEllen Wilson is one of the strong leaders who Reinhardt invested in and is credited as being one of the building blocks on which Reinhardt’s current leadership stands. The Bartow County native came to Reinhardt as a student in 1959, graduating with her degree in liberal arts two years later.

Reinhardt quickly found a place in her heart, and she would spend 30 years pouring herself into the future of the University in roles fostering alumni relationships,

transitioning university presidents into their roles, working in student affairs and fundraising for the University as the vice president for advancement.

Outside of Reinhardt, Wilson found herself volunteering for many organizations and providing support in the community.

Her appointment to the Canton City Council more than 20 years ago was happenstance, following her neighbor’s passing.

The Mayor and Council chose her to fill his seat.

“I soon found a passion for helping my constituents, who are my neighbors,” Wilson said.

Wilson spent the next 20 years learning, asking questions and most importantly, listening, many of the tasks she thinks

are important components of making decisions for the city.

“I do not like controversy but find myself involved in zoning disputes and policy modifications almost weekly.

This requires studying many different opinions and aspects, listening carefully, reviewing documents and finally, making a decision. Always, there are those who oppose a decision. I try to defer on the side of what is best and right for the majority of citizens.”

She understands the cause and effect relationship of what the decisions of the governing body have on the community, and she encourages those seeking to get involved in public service to truly understand that what they do or decide has an impact outside council chambers.

“Anyone aspiring to public service must realize their work affects everyone in some way. Making such significant decisions requires knowledge and good common sense,” she said. “There is great responsibility on the shoulders of each person elected to office.

The job does not assure you can please everyone. It means you must think ahead, while reflecting on the past. It means learning everything possible about an issue in order to make a decision reflecting future reality. It means listening to new ideas and hearing from citizens who have prior knowledge. It means being informed and knowing the proper manner in which to use information.

“In short, public service requires making decisions that are best for the present and the future.”

Reinhardt alumnus Frank Reynolds ’95, ’10 was called to serve in a way that requires him to put his life on the line. The Sheriff of Cherokee County may have earned a fine arts degree from Reinhardt, but it was his calling that led him to a career in public safety.

“I don’t think I pursued a career in public service, rather, I think it pursued me,” he said.

Reynolds came to Reinhardt in 1989 to pursue a liberal arts degree. He stayed for a few semesters before leaving to work full time, only to return to earn his associate’s degree in 1995 and then complete his bachelor’s degree in 2010.

The need to work full time forced Reynolds to take breaks from classes but the backing he received from Reinhardt faculty helped him finish what he started.

The late Curtis Chapman, who taught art at Reinhardt, was a beacon of support for the sheriff. “He was very encouraging to me to finish my associate’s and then to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

“Curtis was a Reinhardt icon and still lives in the hearts of alumni,” Reynolds said.

Even though his degrees are unrelated to his career, he said his Reinhardt degrees have opened doors that he does not believe otherwise would have been an option.

“My major was not specific to my profession, but having my degree allowed me to have job opportunities that I would not have had otherwise,” he said. “I was once an apprentice.

Reinhardt was my tool box, its curriculum my tools, and its professors my blueprint. Now, I am the master craftsman.”

Reynolds began his career in law enforcement in 1994 with the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office, serving for 11 years before working for the Department of State. When he returned from duties overseas, Reynolds went to work at the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office. He served in a leadership role as captain, and in 2016, he ran for election for Cherokee Sheriff.

“As a Georgia Constitutional Officer, the sheriff is responsible for maintaining and operating the jail, courthouse security, issuance of warrants and general law enforcement services,” Reynolds said.

SUPPORT FOR SERVICE To succeed as a leader, a strong support system is necessary.

Both Wilson and Reynolds have had cheerleaders on their

sidelines encouraging them every step of the way.

For Wilson, her husband, John, whom she met at Reinhardt, has been by her side through her service to Reinhardt and the community. In the political arena, Wilson said one of her greatest cheerleaders and mentors was former Canton Mayor Cecil Pruett.

“One of the many mentors guiding my life in service on Canton City Council was Mayor Cecil Pruett. As a selfless, tireless and compassionate individual with great vision, he not only inspired me, but many others while serving as Canton’s mayor,” Wilson said.

For Reynolds, his wife, Dr. Jennifer Reynolds, whom he also met at Reinhardt and a strong community leader herself, is the backbone of his support system. He says he is fortunate to have many professional and personal connections to lean on when he needs good advice or an ear to vent.

“I believe I am the person I am due to the people that I have surrounded myself with personally and professionally. I like to find admirable qualities in all people and then emulate their successes. But if I were to choose anyone, I would say my parents, Roy and Eileen Reynolds.”

Public Safety Institute offers wealth of knowledge from seasoned faculty Reinhardt faculty know how important education is to a career in public safety because they have filled those roles in their careers.

While the Public Safety Institute is led by Director Trey Drawdy – who has decades of experience in law enforcement himself – many of the PSI faculty like Woodstock Police Chief Calvin Moss, Canton Police Chief Mark Mitchell and Milton Police Chief Dr. Rich Austin are current leaders in law enforcement agencies across the metroAtlanta area.

Cherokee Sheriff Frank Reynolds said the best advice he can give those interested in pursuing a career is to be equipped with the tools necessary to succeed.

“Ensure that you have the education, training and experience in the desired field to give you a strong foundation,” he said.

“Put people first. Understand that being in public service does not make you a leader, it gives you the opportunity to be one.”

Reynolds also knows how valuable higher education is in law enforcement. So much so that he, along with Training Capt. John Gunning, worked with Reinhardt leaders to establish an Educational Pathway for Cherokee Sheriff’s Office employees. The agreement allows CSO employees to earn

their associate’s and/or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a bachelor’s degree in organizational management and leadership.

Both the ACJ and BCJ programs are offered in a 100 percent online platform.

The Public Safety Institute’s Academy allows students to earn an associate’s degree while completing basic mandate to be a police officer in the state of Georgia.

For those identified as potential leaders in the agency, the Sheriff can select those candidates to earn their Master of Public Administration with Reinhardt’s Executive Command and Leadership Program (ExCL).

Reinhardt has worked with the Georgia POST Council so officers can earn POST credits while they are earning their degrees.

“Our programs are unique in that we marry POST certified training with higher education, which leads to an all-around better prepared professional,” Drawdy said.

“For the last decade, our mission has been to provide responsive academic programs that meet the training and educational needs of those who lead lives of sacrifice.”

A leap of faith from an uncertain path has catapulted alumnus John Sullivan into international success.

W

hen Sullivan ’89 attended Reinhardt, a two-year college at the time, he lacked direction as a student. He was unsure where he would end up or where he should put his focus.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I was in school at Reinhardt, and I wasted a lot of time and effort trying to figure it out,” he said.

He now develops relationships with people worldwide as vice president for Birkman, a human capital consulting company.

Sullivan’s testimony is one of encouragement: he believes students should never give up, they should maintain hope throughout all of life’s unpredictability, despite not knowing where their journey will lead.

“Do the thing that you are not prepared to do. And if you fail, and you will with varying degrees, learn from it and move forward.

You will not ultimately fail unless you give up. Never give up. Never never never never.”

After completing his Reinhardt degree, Sullivan earned a bachelor’s degree in international

With his four-year degree in hand, he was faced with uncertainties.

But he took a leap of faith and accepted a job in China without knowing the language and with limited knowledge of Chinese culture. The time he spent abroad was also prolific, as his more than a year in Shanghai developed into decades of working with people in more than 50 countries around the world.

At Birkman, Sullivan helps employees of international companies learn about their skills and personality strengths to allow them to become more effective team members.

While he makes many connections on a global scale,

one of the greatest challenges in Sullivan’s career is maintaining his personal ties, finding ways to stay close to the people he cares about, whether they’re at home or living in different time zones.

“Despite the passage of time and the different directions of my life and those of my friends and family, I am proud to maintain close ties with these people in my life,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan prioritizes time for those important to him, including his alma mater, where he stays connected through his presence on Reinhardt’s Alumni Board of Governors.

“Some of the best friends in my life have been and continue to be people I met at Reinhardt.”

hen business professor Walter Beck met Nallely Juarez ’09 and Sandra Garcia ’12, he saw significant potential in both sisters that motivated him to do what it took to recruit them to Reinhardt University.

Since graduation, the sisters have taken positions in local school districts, Garcia at Gilmer High School teaching math and Juarez at Clear Creek Middle School teaching Language Arts.

“Both have become a credit to the community, giving back more than they ever received,” Beck said of the Goizueta Foundation scholars.

Juarez has long held a passion for teaching, and feels her involvement with the Student Government Association, including her vice president of administration position in 2007-2008, provided a solid foundation for her career. She also attributes her teaching methods to the professors who impacted her.

“Reinhardt inspired me to ensure that education transcends the classroom. My professors at Reinhardt often recited that ‘one size cannot fit all students’ and it simply became my philosophy,” said Juarez. “I am able to see the uniqueness in every child,

which I use to find the best ways to meet his or her needs.”

Juarez also tutored in the Student Success Center, a position on campus that aided her sister’s career decision. Garcia’s path was not as clear, as she started as a music major in the School of Performing Arts and didn’t know she would end up leading a classroom.

With experience tutoring math, she joined her sister in tutoring other students, and in addition to her knowledge of the Price School of Education, her interest grew in becoming an educator.

“I gave it a try and began taking math courses with Dr. Richard Summers. His wisdom and intelligence made me fall in love with math even more, and I decided to major in mathematics while also finishing the secondary math education program to earn my teaching license,” said Garcia.

Juarez and Garcia spent meaningful time at Reinhardt during their education and making the journey together made it even more special.

“Some of the best memories of my life with my sister took place at Reinhardt as we went to the Echo Garden or walked to the Glasshouse through the beautiful scenery that is Reinhardt University,” Garcia said.

THE GOIZUETA FOUNDATION Established in 1992 by the former chairman and CEO of The CocaCola Company, Roberto C. Goizueta, The Goizueta Foundation has provided financial assistance to students attending Reinhardt University since 2003.

Today, The Goizueta Foundation continues to support Reinhardt students each year through an endowed fund held by the University.

AAC names Joey Johnson ‘Coach of the Year’ Reinhardt men’s head soccer coach Joey Johnson received an honor from the AAC for the second year in a row that recognizes the leadership and guidance he provides his team.

Johnson was named “Coach of the Year” for the men’s soccer 2018 season. “For me as a coach, individual honors reflect the commitment, efforts and unified investment of the players and staff throughout the year,” said Johnson. “It is a privilege to accompany them on this journey as we seek to arrive at our full potential together.”

James Miller tabbed Regional AFCA ‘Coach of the Year’ Reinhardt head football coach James Miller completed his second season at the helm of Reinhardt’s football team with a 9-2 record and another trip to the NAIA Football Championship Series. As a result of his hard work and dedication, the American Football Coaches Association named him “Region 1 Coach of the Year.” In his two years at Reinhardt, Miller amassed a 21-3 record, two conference championships and an appearance in the NAIA National Championship in 2017. “Coach of the Year is an honor and privilege to receive because I coach great players and have a great staff that put in a lot of time and effort into everything,” Miller said. “I really appreciate everything the players and coaches do for our program. I’m blessed to work with such great people.”

Jeff Bedard selected NAIA ‘Wrestling Coach of the Year’ After guiding the 5th-ranked Eagles to the 2019 NAIA Wrestling National Championships and a 12-2 overall record, the NAIA named Reinhardt head coach Jeff Bedard “Wrestling Coach of the Year.” “It’s a great honor and is definitely the biggest coaching honor I have won,” Bedard said. “I can’t thank my good staff enough: Coach Pitts, Coach Virnich and graduate assistant Coach Disastio. Our guys have bought into what we’re doing, and they made this happen for our team. I can’t thank the administration at the University and my boss, Bill Popp, enough for supporting our program and staff. The old saying, ‘it takes a village to raise a family,’ is true.” The team headed to Iowa with 11 wrestlers—the nation’s third-most number of wrestlers—trailing only seven-time defending national champion Grand View and Indiana Tech, who both took a full roster of 12 grapplers. During their season, Reinhardt’s wrestling team swept the entire slate of 10 weight classes for the first time in Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament history.

Roy Reynolds named AAC ‘Coach of the Year’ Roy Reynolds, head coach of women’s lacrosse, received his first “Coach of the Year” recognition from the AAC after the successful 2018-19 season. “Winning AAC Coach of the Year is the greatest honor I’ve been awarded in all my years of coaching. I give all the credit to my wonderful players for buying in and doing the work to win our conference.

I owe it all to my guys, as they bought into the team culture and work their butts off every day. I couldn’t ask for a better group of young men – extremely proud,” said Snow.

Brian Goodhind recognized second consecutive year as ‘Coach of the Year’ The NAIA Regional Awards named head women’s volleyball coach Brian Goodhind as the “Northeast Region Coach of the Year” for the second year in a row, a recognition from The American Volleyball Coaches Association. “Year two was another historical season for the team, and it was great for them to see all their hard work, on and off the court, shown in so many different areas: classroom, win/loss column, first-ever undefeated AAC conference record, second National Championship appearance and awards,” Goodhind said. “God has given me such a wonderful platform to shine His light and help young student-athletes become their best, not only on the court, but off it as well. The best award I receive is seeing them accomplish things they sometimes couldn’t even dream of and when they receive that degree. The awards keep coming when I see them grow into incredible adults, great jobs, marriage and families of their own. Those are things we as coaches truly take as our best accomplishments and being a part of that journey.”

A

fter Angel Cornista ’19 played volleyball for seven years, playing at the collegiate level became one of her goals. When looking at colleges, along with the volleyball program, Cornista was sold on Reinhardt’s small class sizes because she felt professors had the opportunity to provide students with their full attention. That was just the beginning of what she would learn to love about her alma mater.

Starting out, the natural challenges of becoming a student-athlete arose as she adapted to her new surroundings, professors, friends and teammates.

It didn’t take long for her team to feel like family.

“Just like any business, family or team sport, working with a team has downfalls. However, my teammates became my second family. As a team, we faced adversity head on, made amazing memories and lifelong best friends,” said Cornista.

The time and energy Cornista devoted to her athletic ability is one she said she’ll never regret. She loved playing on a team that supported one another on and off the court—and the field, during her year of lacrosse.

“Playing with a team in any sport allows an individual to learn how to work with others. This is when ‘I’ becomes ‘we,’ where ‘one’ stands for ‘all,’ and communication ties into the small real world.”

The volleyball team’s strong mentality certainly reflected throughout Cornista’s time as an Eagle: the ladies won the Appalachian Athletic Conference Championship (AAC) back to back in 2017 and 2018, and head coach, Brian Goodhind, won AAC Coach of the Year the same years. While she’ll always remember the wins, the lessons Cornista learned at Reinhardt will continue to resonate throughout her life.

“Playing volleyball, I personally learned to overcome adversity, to stand tall after a loss, to have a goal and fight to accomplish that goal. Playing a sport in college helped me grow, mentally and physically.”

Cornista’s coaches instilled values that also go beyond practices and games. During her first two years under Coach Jennifer Kandt, Cornista learned what it means to give back to the community. That mindset continued with Goodhind.

“He amplified the volleyball program with his knowledge, faith and community service.”

With the heart of her team and coaches, Cornista’s experience developed into an unexpected one.

“What I expected as a student-athlete ended up being 10 times better.”

Cornista’s Reinhardt experience took place outside the court and classroom, as well. She led new students as an orientation leader in 2018-2019 and coordinated social media for D.R.E.A.M.S., a student organization that promotes diversity on campus.

While she may have not been a student leader for four years, the commitment she made proved enough to earn the Student Leader of the Year recognition her senior year.

“My Reinhardt involvement was brief and although I was not on every organization, team or club, I found that whatever you invest in with all your worth, you will get out what you put in.”

With all her involvement, Cornista remained a dedicated student, earning her Bachelor of Science in sport administration and minor in graphic design. Her hard work resulted in representing the Class of 2019 at the spring commencement ceremony.

“Not only did Reinhardt itself help me grow, but the students, professors, faculty and staff, all helped me grow. I had amazing mentors that helped me understand my full worth and what I want to do in life but also what I am meant to do.”

Cornista’s Reinhardt journey is not over yet. She recently accepted the coordinator of athletic operations position with Reinhardt Athletics.

She said she feels the time she’s already spent at the University provided her with the tools she needed to get to where she is now.

“Reinhardt University offers many tools to help students thrive academically, the only question is, how will you use them?”

Even before I arrived on campus, I began hearing alumni stories of how Reinhardt impacted their lives, and students have shared what Reinhardt means to them. It’s easy to see why Reinhardt is thriving.

Reinhardt supports its students like family, and it is because of committed alumni and generous donors that we are able to provide tremendous scholarship opportunities to our students.

Homecoming festivities will start Friday, Nov. 1 with a community parade.

Festivities will continue Nov. 2 in downtown Canton for the Born to Run 5K benefiting the Cherokee Scholars program.

Registration begins at 7 a.m., Race starts at 8 a.m.

Register at Reinhardt.edu/5K. After the race, join us on campus for tailgating and then cheer on the Eagles as they battle on the gridiron against Cincinnati Christian University at 1:30 p.m.
