Gordy Dining Center, opened in 1985, was funded by Evelyn Gordy '24 in memory of her husband of 53 years, W. Frank Gordy. The Gordys were a force for good in Atlanta, and are best known for The Varsity restaurant they opened in 1928 at North Avenue and Spring Street in midtown. Today, Nancy Simms, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gordy, continues her service on the Reinhardt University Board of Trustees and her son, Gordon Muir, serves on the President's Advisory Council.

Dear Reinhardt Family,

I write to share with you the many blessings God has given Reinhardt in the past year. Because of your support and encouragement, our beautiful University in a Park is truly on the rise with success in every area.

Academics are on the Rise Reinhardt’s faculty continue to excel in teaching and research with over 161 publications and performances, 58 presentations, 21 honors and awards, and 82 acts of service outside Reinhardt. Read more about faculty accomplishments on pages 14-18.

This past spring, Reinhardt received a $1.5 million grant from The Goizueta Foundation for the Center for Innovative Teaching and Engaged Learning. This Center will provide ways for faculty, students and the community to learn together best practices for teaching and learning in the 21st century.

Excellent faculty create environments for students to thrive. Student accomplishments include 265 publications, performances and presentations, 285 honors and awards, 124 internships and clinical experiences, 39 service while learning projects, 75 study abroad events and 94 capstone projects.

This fall, we welcomed our largest enrollment ever with our entering class boasting the highest academic profile in Reinhardt’s history. The class of 2022 includes 32 Sharp Scholars (a 77 percent increase), 68 Honors students (a 46 percent increase) and 158 Academic Scholars (a 62 percent increase). Reinhardt’s first-year students hold the highest average GPA ever of 3.28.

Student Life is on the Rise Reinhardt is launching a new initiative – Living-Learning Communities – where firstyear students can choose to live in communities focused on faith and spirituality, performing arts, honors or education. These learning communities allow our students the opportunity to build a

solid personal and academic foundation within the community in which they live. Seventyfive students chose to participate in this new initiative, and we anticipate adding more Living-Learning Communities in the future.

More information about Reinhardt students and student life, including the new Reynolds Wayside Chapel, can be found on pages 19-31.

Our student-athletes were winners on and off the field earning an overall average GPA of 3.2 with Women’s and Men’s Soccer leading the way with 3.69 and 3.61, respectively. From Reinhardt’s 22 teams, we had eight NAIA All-Americans, 130 Academic All-Conference and 106 Eagle Scholars (3.75 GPA or higher).

Men’s Lacrosse won its second NAIA National Championship in consecutive years and football was national runner-up. Read more about our impressive athletic program on pages 32-35.

Fundraising is on the Rise Our faithful alumni, donors and friends continue to support our vision, “To create a unique Reinhardt Experience where each student thrives.” In 2017-2018, the Advancement Office raised almost $4.8 million and increased the total number of donors by 6.6 percent. You can read profiles of generous donors and new advancement initiatives on pages 36-38.

Reinhardt’s future is on the rise as we prepare for a new strategic plan and capital campaign.

The very first Shamrock Stroll .5K in downtown Jasper was a huge success raising money for the Pickens Scholars program.

Everyone had a great time at the stroll and party in the park and contributed to the program that provides scholarships to Pickens County students attending Reinhardt University.

Family celebrates special moment at graduation Graduation was extra special for one graduate, Benjamin Wheeler ’18, and his family as the Golden Anniversary Class of 1968 was recognized and celebrated; that class included his grandfather, Hugh Sheffield ’68.

“A lot of my family has studied at Reinhardt.

I have a grandmother that graduated, and my grandfather attended when it was a two-year school. I find it pretty awesome, and honestly a coincidence because I was actually delayed a year or two from graduating,” Benjamin Wheeler said. “It’s not every day that you can say you graduated exactly 50 years after an immediate family member from the same school. I’m definitely glad to be able to share the moment.”

Benjamin was scheduled to graduate in 2017 with his twin brother, Joseph, but he was delayed a year. Because of the delay, he was able to share the day with his grandfather.

“It’s ironic, but it is wonderful,” Sheffield said.

“I told Benjamin last year that this would be my 50th anniversary and also the year he graduates.”

The Sheffield and Wheeler family shared a celebratory moment with President Mallard prior to the ceremony.

Drs. Jonathan and Anne Good – each granted sabbatical leave for a semester in 2017-18 – enjoyed their own path toward the end goal: expanding their knowledge to share in the classroom at Reinhardt.

onathan Good spent fall 2017 in the Middle East, visiting Turkey, Israel and Egypt. His mission: to study the connections between St. George and al-Khidr.

“The formal reason for my trip to the Middle East was that I wanted to investigate the convergence of the veneration of St. George, the fourthcentury Christian soldier and martyr, and that of al-Khidr, the revered Muslim wali. That these two figures have, at certain times and places, been identified with each other, despite the traditional animosity between Christianity and Islam, is remarkable,” said Jonathan Good, as he shared his experiences in “First Floor Tarpley,” the Reinhardt University History Department’s blog.

He also gained information beneficial to his students, incorporating pictures and anecdotes from his travels. Good’s dissertation centered on how St. George became patron saint of England during the 14th and 15th centuries, publishing his book “The Cult of St. George in Medieval England.”

“That the English picked St. George is rather odd, because there’s nothing English about him. If he ever existed, and there’s no proof that he did, he would have been a military captain somewhere in the eastern Roman Empire in the early fourth century, just prior to Constantine, and who

was martyred in the Great Persecution of Diocletian,” he said. “From there he became hugely popular, and even experienced some convergence with the Islamic figure of al-Khidr.”

Good additionally worked on a second project, investigating how alKhidr and St. George were connected.

world of colonial South Africa in the early 1700s into a publishable book. She explored the life of Peter Kolb, a German mathematician and astronomer who observed the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa and studied his book “Caput Bonae Spei Hodiernum,” which describes various aspects of the Cape, such as physical environment, politics, social lives and detailed observations on the indigenous Khoikhoi people.

“My family lived in South Africa as part of a German-speaking community and when I discovered Kolb’s original book and several of the translations in the James Ford Bell Library – one of the best rare books libraries in the United States and housed at the University of Minnesota – it just seemed like the perfect fit,” she said.

Good said her break refreshed her spirit, and that having time to think, read and plan made her ready to the return to teaching this fall.

“Often people have the idea that doing research is separate from teaching. It has never been that way for me. I bring stories, methodologies and controversies from my research into the classroom all the time,” said Good.

“If I don’t do research, I feel like I’m stagnating, and I have nothing new to say – and that doesn’t make for happy classes. I find that I have returned to Reinhardt with new ideas for the classes I teach currently, as well as ideas for new classes I’d like to teach.”

She said she was grateful for her sabbatical and believes Reinhardt will benefit from faculty taking the opportunity.

“I think that Reinhardt will experience a continuous boost of creativity on many levels now that faculty have the opportunity to apply for sabbaticals as a regular part of their careers here.”

REINHARDT ANSWERS THE CALL FOR MORE PROFESSIONAL NURSES

Reinhardt University welcomed its second cohort of nurses during the White Coat Ceremony in August in Flint Hall at Falany Performing Arts Center. These student nurses will join the inaugural cohort as they study to become professional nurses.

R

einhardt University has answered the call for more professional, highly trained nurses as the need for health care services increases, enrolling more than 37 students in its first two cohorts in the newly established Cauble School of Nursing & Health Sciences.

According to the Georgia Nurses Association, a critical shortage of nurses is looming.

Citing an aging nursing workforce – with more than 50 percent of the workforce nearing retirement age – and increases in the population of ages 65 and older, statistics predict a potential shortage of 50,000 registered nurses in Georgia by the year 2030.

In addition to an aging population, the millennial generation has exceeded the size of the Boomer population, creating a need for more health care professionals, of which nurses are the largest sector, U.S. Census data shows.

With demand high, BSN nurses have a strong earning potential in the workforce. Employment website, Glassdoor.com, reports the average salary for a nurse having completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing is nearly $72,000.

“At Reinhardt, students learn the skills they need to pursue a career in nursing in an atmosphere that educates the whole person in a unique setting

emphasizing its historic liberal arts tradition that teaches them to think critically, hone communication skills and build teamworking abilities,” said Dr. Glynis Blackard, founding dean of the Cauble School of Nursing & Health Sciences.

Nursing student Clay Cowart selected Reinhardt to get individualized attention to prepare him for a career in caring for the elderly.

“I chose Reinhardt to receive one-on-one attention to make me a successful nurse and to expand my career possibilities to continue to work in gerontology and end-of-life care,” Cowart said.

On a national level, the nursing shortage in the United States proves to require up to 1 million nurses by 2020, according to a recently updated study from East Tennessee State University. And, reports The American Nurses Association, there will be more registered nurse jobs through 2022 than any other profession in the country.

With its recent approval from a national certification body, Reinhardt is able to offer its RN to BSN online – as well as its other online offerings – in 49 U.S. states, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing can be completed online with clinicals completed at any approved facility nationwide.

hen Dr. Steve Morse met Hank McCamish – Atlanta businessman, dedicated philanthropist and namesake for Reinhardt University’s McCamish School of Business & Sport Studies – at a Georgia Public Policy Foundation meeting, he was not anticipating becoming the dean of that very same school more than 20 years later.

“Reinhardt’s reputation, the outstanding business faculty, the McCamish School’s success and its growing programs, at both the undergraduate and MBA level, certainly piqued my interest in being affiliated with this outstanding program,” Morse said.

He envisions the business school growing and continuing its efforts of developing students as whole people through their faith, education and leadership. He also hopes to build on the strength of faculty and students to prepare graduates for the changing and diverse business field.

“Both undergraduates and MBA students have the unique opportunity to learn from our dynamic professors that have a wide variety of real-world work experience to share with our students in bridging the gap between both real-world business experience and textbook concepts,” said Morse. “This unique combination of experience by our professors generates graduates that have highly desired skills in leadership, communication, technical and managerial abilities employers seek today.”

The variety of experience from Morse’s career will aid Reinhardt’s efforts to

provide students with experiential learning opportunities in the community.

Morse earned a Bachelor of Science in agriculture and applied economics from the University of Georgia and his Ph.D. in the same concentration at The University of Tennessee.

He knows what characteristics and skills students need to possess to work in the industry through the consulting projects and hands-on and applied research he completed for many business enterprises and nonprofit organizations.

“These experiences provided first-hand knowledge of the characteristics and skills employers are looking for in business graduates, in addition to how to develop business courses that provide these skills.”

Marsh becomes Dean of the Price School of Education After serving as the interim dean of the Price School of Education, Dr. Nancy Marsh was officially promoted to the role to the lead the school beginning July 1. Marsh joined the University in 2010, serving as an adjunct faculty member. In 2015, she came on board full time as an assistant professor of early childhood education. And, in 2017 she was appointed the interim dean – a position she served in for one year until her promotion this past July.

W. Jeff Bishop is an expert in the field of southeastern Indian history, and he is using that knowledge to lead the Funk Heritage Center at Reinhardt University as the museum’s director. Bishop joined Reinhardt University in July 2018. He was previously the executive director of the McRitchie-Hollis Museum and Historic Train Depot located in Newnan. In addition to his experience as a museum director and professional historian, he worked with the National Park Service, developing an interpretive brochure and map for the NPS Trail of Tears National Historic Trail website. He developed wayside exhibits and sign plans for the Trail in sites throughout the northwest Georgia and researched the history of the homes of Chief John Ross House and John Ridge. As the president of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association for a decade, Bishop has many friends in this area.

VULCAN TEACHING EXCELLENCE AWARD Dr. Martha Shaw, professor of music and director of choral activities, was presented the Vulcan Teaching Excellence Award. This annual award is given through the Georgia Independent College Association and sponsored by Vulcan Materials Company’s Southeast Division. “I am humbled and grateful to be honored by my colleagues for my work at Reinhardt,” Shaw said. “We have so many great teachers who give their lives and hearts to this institution, and I am thrilled to work with them. My students are smart, kind, talented and teachable. They make working here a joy.”

UNITED METHODIST EXEMPLARY TEACHER AWARD The United Methodist Exemplary Teacher Award went to Dr. Aliya A. Donnell Davenport, assistant professor of biology. The award goes to a Reinhardt University faculty member who exemplifies excellence in teaching; civility and concern for students and colleagues; commitment to values-centered education; and service to students, the institution and the community.

JANE ENGLAND TEACHING EXCELLENCE AWARD Dr. Ken Wheeler, professor of history, was honored with the Jane England Teaching Excellence Award. The Jane England award is dedicated to the identification of a full-time Reinhardt University faculty member who has completed a meritorious service activity to the University in an area of teaching and advising, service to the University and community, or professional development.

FACULTY RESEARCH & SCHOLARSHIP AWARD The Faculty Research & Scholarship Award was received by Dr. SimonPeter Gomez, assistant professor of political science, political science program coordinator and faculty senate parliamentarian. Every academic year, the school deans identify a Reinhardt faculty member who has contributed significantly to their academic discipline. The contribution is usually scholarship published by a peer-reviewed journal or an academic publishing house.

Such work distinguishes the faculty members in his or her field and brings a strong academic reputation to Reinhardt University.

FACULTY ARTISTIC AWARD Jym Davis, associate professor of art, was bestowed the Faculty Artistic Award. Reinhardt University’s community of fine and performing artists contributes to the enrichment of our campus culture through musical performances, theatrical productions, literary readings and art exhibitions. The Faculty Artistic Award is given each year to a deserving faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in artistic production or performance both on campus and in his or her field of expertise.

WHY REINHARDT? FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE HELPS IMMERSE NEW STUDENTS INTO REINHARDT CULTURE

When incoming freshmen and their families hear orientation leaders chanting “it’s great, to be, a Reinhardt Eagle!” they see and hear the excitement of current students eager to introduce new students to campus. Newcomers may not realize the preparation required for one day of orientation; something that pays off down the road.

Walter May, dean of students, believes students feel engaged on campus when they make meaningful connections with faculty or staff members, an experience initially received at New Student Orientation with SOAR and Eagle Bound that are carried into the First Year Seminar, making a significant impact on student persistence.

“For Eagle Bound weekend to be successful, student affairs works together with each department on campus, providing students a well-rounded experience to meet all their needs in preparation for their first year of college,” May said of the weekend of events leading up to the first day of class.

Early childhood education freshman, Reagan Cipollina, said First Year Seminar has given her a great look into Reinhardt University, learning the campus and traditions of the school.

“Even though I have only had a few classes so far, it has helped me learn more about campus and helped me adjust to my other classes,” Cipollina said. “I'm excited to see what this brings during the rest of the semester.”

May said the purpose of the First Year Seminar is to assist new students in making a successful transition academically and personally.

“The course offers students the chance to become connected to the many resources and opportunities on campus and shows them where they belong, while communicating the University’s expectations,” he said.

The First Year Seminar is taught by a variety of valuable campus resources, such as director of public safety, Jay Duncan, and campus pastor, Rev. Jamie Hudgins.

“The faculty teach in a way that helps students develop and explore various issues, and allows their perspectives to grow through coursework,” May said.

Both orientation and the First Year Seminar require many moving parts and helping hands to succeed. Fortunately, Reinhardt maintains students, staff and faculty that exude passion and commitment for the future generations of Eagles.

Ian Schumacher’s ’19 quirky, funloving personality is just about as large as his stature. The 6-foot-2, 285-pound tackle for the Reinhardt Eagles football team has found his place at Reinhardt. And, it’s not just on the football field.

Affectionately known on campus as “SHU,” Ian came for football but stayed for everything Reinhardt embodies: a strong education, community and faith. “Students, faculty and staff are able to be transparent with each other,” he said. “I’ve made relationships with so many people that Reinhardt just became home for me.”

While some students may seek out a college or university with thousands of students and one that may get prime coverage on ESPN on a regular basis, Ian says Reinhardt is everything he was looking for.

Anya Cutter ’20 came to Reinhardt knowing only one friendly face, but the tiny but mighty musical theatre major found her own place in the spotlight.

Anya had been studying under Reinhardt professor of music and director of choral activities, Dr. Martha Shaw, since she was 10. “At first, I chose Reinhardt because of Dr. Shaw,” Anya recalls. “I visited and realized this was the perfect school for me.

The small class sizes, the opportunity for stage time and major roles, and the success of the music program all drew me in.”

What she found at Reinhardt was a family — she even refers to faculty and staff as her “chill moms and dads” and students as her “brothers and sisters.” “Everyone wants you to succeed. It’s college. It’s a time of development. They want to see you grow and you can really tell!”

Anya’s home away from home is one she recommends everyone come see — from the banks of Lake Mullenix and the grand Reinhardt University Theater to the coziness of the Admission House and the bustling newly expanded Gordy Dining Center, anyone can find a special spot on campus.

“Step on our beautiful campus and walk our streets. Go into The Falany and Flint Hall. Sit in a class,” she said. “It doesn’t take long to realize that Reinhardt has something special that not many other schools have.”

With a full-time job, ease and convenience was on Hannah Hise’s ’14 mind when she wanted to earn a degree to accelerate her career. Reinhardt wasn’t new to her. In fact, she earned her first degree in music in 2009. It’s also a place where she met her husband. It was home.

“I enjoyed my time there so much that I did not hesitate considering Reinhardt when searching for a place to earn my second degree,” Hannah said.

But, being in class again all day was not an option.

She was working full time and needed something that would work within her schedule.

Hoping to expand his opportunities, Jordan Hunter ’17 — a welder by trade — headed down a traditional path toward earning his degree. But, it didn’t work for him.

“Being a full-time worker and father made it extremely difficult for me to attend regular classes,” Jordan said.

That’s when Diane Petty Cagle stepped in.

The associate professor of business and coordinator of Reinhardt’s online Bachelor of Business Administration saw Jordan’s potential and knew he just needed a different format. The online BBA was new to Reinhardt and Jordan was one of the program’s first students. He was able to keep his welding job — one he loved and one that was a family trade — while he earned his degree.

rom internships to study abroad opportunities and everything in between, Reinhardt University’s launch of its Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) “Where in the World RU Going?” was a smashing success last spring as students learned more about what the University has to offer outside the classroom.

High Impact Practices strengthen students’ independent thought, imagination and creativity, and lifelong learning skills.

INTERNSHIPS Internships allow students to gain hands-on experience in their chosen field. The experience can show them they have chosen the right career path or that they might want to pursue a different direction. Karina Rodriguez ’18 spent a summer working in the Information Technology Department of Las Vegas, Nevada-based Caesars Entertainment. This past August, Rodriguez accepted a position with Caesars Enterprise Services in the communication office.

“My internship experience was very unique since Caesars Entertainment is based in Las Vegas; I was a remote intern working with a three-hour time difference and in a newly introduced internship position in IT,” she said. “I worked tremendously hard to network with upper-level management and enthusiastically asked for more projects.

I challenged myself to learn new things that were not necessarily in my focus area but that allowed me to broaden my role and become more effective 28 | REINHARDT | FALL 2018

within the organization. Throughout my yearlong internship, I also made sure to regularly seek input on my job performance and express my desires to come on full-time after graduation.

“Beyond gaining valuable work experience in your field, internships provide an opportunity to apply your skills and classroom knowledge to a real-world setting,” she added. “This experience gives you an edge in both the classroom and as you transition into the job market.”

EDUCATION THROUGH TRAVEL Many Reinhardt students had the opportunity to explore outside their comfort zones during the 2017-18 academic year with trips to Nigeria, Greece, Italy and Ireland.

Greece: Art and theatre students traveled to Greece with professors Brett Mullinix and David Nisbet, experiencing firsthand the lessons in their classes leading up to the summer trip.

“While photos in textbooks are great, they can never replace going there and experiencing it,” said Carlie Harmon ’18. “Being able to walk around the old Minoan and Mycenaean pathways and almost see what it was like to live like them…being able to match information to an actual experience is so much easier than trying to cram information for a test and remember it past the final grade.”

Nigeria: President Kina S. Mallard traveled with faculty members, Dr. Anne

Good and Tunji Adesesan, and student Deborah Dahn ’18. The December 2018 trip was the culmination of a dream of Adesesan, a longtime Reinhardt faculty member.

“The whole thing started with a dream. Then it became a vision and then it became a reality,” Adesesan said.

Over the years, Adesesan, with the help of students, created the African Descendants Student Association and began collecting books to send to Nigeria. That endeavor led to Edwin Clark University receiving 50,000 books from Reinhardt, something that helped Edwin Clark receive accreditation.

Dr. Mallard forged a friendship with Edwin Clark Vice Chancellor Dr. Tim Oyebode Olagbemiro, and she was invited to give a matriculation address.

But that quickly turned to an hour speaking engagement and publication of her manuscript. The trip afforded the group a first-class guided trip through Nigeria. They met with local schoolchildren, were in company with a king and were bestowed gifts along the way. But, above all, it allowed them a chance to see and experience another culture.

Ireland: Another trip, this one to Ireland, allowed students to explore the Irish culture alongside professors from the School of Mathematics and Sciences and the School of Arts and Humanities.

Prior to the trip, students planning to go to Ireland took courses including Diverse People, Organizational Behavior, History of Ireland, International Business and Travel Writing.

“Each class gave me new insight into the history and culture of the country I was about to visit, and they helped prepare me to interact with the people there,” said sophomore Nataleigh Long.

SERVICE LEARNING Service learning is a key component of Reinhardt’s values of Faith. Learning. Leading. It gives students the opportunity to serve others through manual labor, faith or companionship.

On any given day, Reinhardt athletes can be found reading to children at R.M. Moore Elementary or Clayton Elementary School in the Waleska community. In fact, Reinhardt’s softball team was honored in August with the Outstanding Team of Service award for their more than 400 hours of service in the community during the 2017-18 academic year.

In addition to community service, the Office of Campus Ministry hosts a mission trip every year to allow students the chance to serve. Last spring, students traveled to Sebring, Florida, where they assisted with construction for the hurricanestricken area.

Once you are ready to look for a job, Mathews also works to provide access to career fairs and the College Central Network electronic job board.

Mathews wants students to know that her office is not just open to those who are looking to be employed by the end of their senior year. She hopes to enable students to know themselves and their purpose and does this through resources such as Focus 2 Personality and value assessments.

“We are not here just to help you ‘get a job,’ we want you to know yourself, your unique talents and gifts,” said Mathews. “When you understand yourself, how you are made and the unique purpose for which you were created, you will be better prepared to identify the career path that will bring you a lifetime of satisfaction.”

RESEARCH While Reinhardt University is not known as a research institution, students can still spend time alongside esteemed faculty strengthening their skills. Every year, students work on research projects in their fields and many are selected to present at the Convocation of Artists and Scholars.

Outside of the University, students present at conferences, like the Southern Sociological Society Annual meeting in New Orleans. Tyler Gaines ’18, now a student in the University of Georgia School of Law, presented his research from the 2017 study abroad trip to Cuba, at the annual SSSA meeting.

“While I was in Cuba, I researched American perceptions of the nation before and after traveling to the nearby island.

I wanted to discover if the U.S.’s history of rough political relations with Cuba affects modern-day American perceptions of the country,” Gaines said. “I found that Americans tend to leave Cuba with a significantly better perception of the country, its citizens and its culture.”

Nicolle Amaya ’18 presented research on “The Impact of Travel of Monolingual People.” Amaya also graduated in May with a degree in social services, criminal justice and cultural diversity.

“Being a student in the Social Sciences department includes having the opportunity to go on trips like this, where you get to study abroad, do research and then have a chance to present in a regional conference, in New Orleans, no less,” Amaya said. “Not many schools give you this one-on-one attention. I’m really lucky to have found Reinhardt.”

A Stop Along the Way

A

place to stop along the way, to reflect and pray – that is the purpose of the Reynolds Wayside Chapel nestled just off the walking path in the center of campus.

Gifted to the University in honor of his family, Garland Reynolds, longtime University architect, put great thought into the design.

“We wanted to establish more of a Methodist presence architecturally on the Reinhardt campus and Dr. Mallard asked if there was anything I had in mind,” he said. “I gave it a lot of thought and came up with this.

It’s directly on the path that all students take

from the dining hall to the library.”

The picturesque outdoor chapel captures the essence of John Wesley, founder of Methodism, and mirrors Reynolds Square in Savannah. Reynolds Square was designed in 1773 by Gen. James Oglethorpe and later named for John Reynolds, the first Royal Governor of Georgia. It is where John Wesley’s home was believed to have been before he returned to England.

The cross, which sits atop a stone monument bearing a well-known hymn, is constructed of olive wood imported from Italy. The cross itself was constructed by a company owned by famous country music singer Zac Brown.

Reynolds wanted the cross to be something special to Reinhardt, so he worked with Brown’s company to ensure something iconically Reinhardt was included.

“I asked, ‘Can you do something to put the Reinhardt logo on ends and tops of this cross,’” Reynolds recalled. Those who look closely will see the recognizable “double Rs” from the Reinhardt University logo.

As students need quiet time for prayer, reflection or meditation, they now have an outdoor space to turn to – to realign their thoughts, purpose and faith.

HAGAN SCHOLARSHIP Founded by Methodist laymen in 1883, Reinhardt University’s Methodist affiliation can be seen across campus and beyond. Children of Methodist pastors and those who plan to go into ministry have the opportunity to earn scholarships. The Hagan Scholarship provided $220,000 to Reinhardt University students in 2017-18, including junior Mason Smith, whose father is pastor of Redwine UMC in Oakwood, Georgia.

“The scholarship has helped me focus on my studies and not have to worry about finances,” Smith said, adding he is a Communications and Media Studies major with plans to go into sports media.

RECOGNIZED LEADER & ‘RISING STAR’ W illiam Charles Popp – simply “Coach Popp” to the Reinhardt community – is more than a coach, and the recent announcement of his being named Athletics Director of the Year by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is a testimony to that fact.

Hired in 2004 to start the baseball program, Popp has overseen the growth and development of the athletic program, which now numbers 23 teams and approximately 550 student-athletes.

Being named NAIA athletic director of the year comes on the heels of another proud, “perhaps prouder,” according to Popp, recognition as the Reinhardt Eagles athletic program earned the coveted Duard Walker AllSports Trophy from the Appalachian Athletic Conference for 2017-2018.

The Walker Trophy recognizes the member institution with the most successful all-around sports program for the year, and it is an honor that Reinhardt had never received.

With Reinhardt’s department-wide record-breaking season, the Eagles were awarded the Appalachian Athletic Conference Duard Walker All-Sports Trophy for the first time in school history. The Duard Walker All-Sports Trophy recognizes member institutions with the most successful all-around sports program for the year. “It has been a long-time goal of the department to win this trophy, and thanks to the hard work from our coaches, student-athletes and staff, this goal came to fruition,” said Bill Popp, vice president for athletics & athletic director. Popp said the department’s motto for the year was #22Teams1RU, and this award is an embodiment of that. “I could not be prouder of the entire Reinhardt family,” said Popp.

With just shy of one-half of the 2017-18 baseball season completed, Popp donned a coach’s uniform and led the baseball team to its first-ever appearance in the NAIA World Series. During that twoplus month period, Popp once again was up-close-and-personal with a team of young men who had a goal and did the hard work required for success as a team.

“It was a very rewarding spring,” said Popp. “My best days are those when I get to witness student-athletes who are leaders, are succeeding in the classroom and are developing as people who will succeed in their chosen profession.”

Lacrosse team claims back-to-back national titles They were the first in Reinhardt University history to bring home a national title. And the Reinhardt Men’s Lacrosse team is the first to bring home back-to-back NAIA National Titles.

It was an overtime score by freshman Dillan Bousquet that closed out the final game giving the Eagles the 8-7 win and the 2018 NAIA National Championship title. “When we entered overtime, Coach Snow told us what we were going to do: ‘Starnes is going to win the faceoff, and when we get a touch, we will call timeout.’ That’s exactly what happened.

After calling our play out and breaking down [in the huddle] on ‘heart’ we were ready to win,” Bousquet said. Reinhardt completed the 2018 campaign at 16-1 and as the NAIA’s top team in men’s lacrosse after dropping the Crusaders to 22-1 on the year. Every game throughout the postseason dating back to the Appalachian Athletic Conference Championship against Montreat, North Carolina on April 20 played dramatically.

The game against the Crusaders was no different as Reinhardt clawed their way back from a four-goal deficit for the secondconsecutive game to claim victory. Head coach John Snow said the win was a total team effort and well-deserved.

Last year, the Lady Eagles Volleyball Team made the NAIA Volleyball National Championship Opening Round for the first time in school history.

ince Coach Brian Goodhind came to Reinhardt University last year, the Lady Eagles Volleyball Team has burst onto the scene. From a 9-20 record in 2016 to 29-7 in Goodhind’s first year, the team’s 2018 run is proving to be their best. The 2017 Appalachian Athletic Conference champions are pushing for postseason play as they were sitting at an undefeated record of 14-0 in AAC play and 23-4 on the season.

Goodhind credits the success to a team effort and a strong culture of family. “As a staff, we have come in and together – with the team – changed the culture here and it's truly such a blessing to watch these girls work so hard and accomplish the things they are accomplishing. I love my girls and they should hear it more of how proud I am of them,” he said.

Reinhardt Baseball Competes in Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series

or the first time in its 62-year history, the Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series welcomed the Reinhardt Eagles to Harris Field and Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho, after the No. 3 seed in the Bowling Green Bracket came out victorious over Campbellsville (Ky.) in the NAIA Baseball Opening Round sudden death final.

“The history that we just made… these eight seniors laid the foundation to lead us down the path that we have always wanted to be on, which is to be in Lewiston as national contenders with these great teams," said Athletic Director Bill Popp, who took the helm of the team halfway through the season.

“We tip our cap again to Oklahoma City; what a program, always good every year. We played a tough team in Antelope Valley, and we just knew there was going to be 10 great teams here, and we were thrilled to be a part of that.”

The Eagles (41-18) prevailed in the ifnecessary contest after the Tigers roared back from a deficit in the opening to win in extra innings. Conversely, Reinhardt came from behind in all three of its wins in the bracket.

Rain forced delays in the start time, increasing the eagerness in the players to get out there and get the job done.

But it was Oklahoma City that flew out of the gate and never looked back with nine runs in the first four innings. The Stars (51-9) put the World Series battle out of reach in the second frame with five tallies in the at-bat for a 6-0 lead, knocking starter Jason Gifford (9-4) off the mound after just 1.2 innings of work.

Reinhardt got the ball rolling in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back walks to lead off the frame, and then Sherman Graves broke open the scoring with an RBI-double. Jacob Cagle and Matthew Vaccaro followed up with two-straight hits to get within, 9-3, but three-consecutive outs ended the threat with two baserunners on.

Brennan Vincent (2 innings) was joined by Connor Hawkins, Johnny Croley and Heriberto Casasola – all three of which got their first World Series action and threw an inning apiece to finish the game.

Only three Eagles collected hits in the loss, led by Graves and Cagle (both 2-for-4 and an RBI).

Doubles duo Myrohn Miranda and Bruno Juarez were the first to get Reinhardt on the board with an 8-5 win. The Phoenix tied the score with a third-line 8-5 victory before the Eagles headed to singles play up by one (2-1) thanks to Fabio Pereira and Mario Belloni Tomas and their 8-5 triumph in No. 1 doubles.

No. 5 singles went wire-to-wire, as did the last four contests of individual play to finish, with the Phoenix again getting even at 3-3.

As both clubs continued to struggle with the conditions and the delays, Sam Alexander won his deciding third set to take the sixthline match, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1.

Pereira, who struggled with cramps, found an extra push from his teammates to fight his way through turned out to be the clinching points in his 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 positive decision.

The team mustered up the energy to put its best effort on display as Reinhardt played later that night against No. 2 Keiser (Fla.). The Eagles left it all out on the courts as they scored at least four points in each doubles competition.

The Seahawks, ranked second in the nation, wrapped up their spot in the final match after victories at both No. 5 and No. 4 singles, respectively.

A legacy supporting nursing B

elieving in the value of – and the increasingly critical need for – additional nurses to meet the demands of a growing Georgia, longtime Canton physician Dr. John A. “Jack” Cauble and his daughter, Sally Forest, have established both endowed and annual scholarship funds at Reinhardt University that will benefit nursing students now and long into the future. Dr. Cauble practiced medicine for 40 years, serving thousands of Cherokee County residents.

The University named its program the Cauble School of Nursing & Health Sciences earlier this year, and it has more than 37 students enrolled in two cohorts of Bachelor of Science in Nursing students who will graduate in December 2019 and 2020.

ormer anti-apartheid protestor and 27-year prison inmate, Nelson Mandela – who became President of South Africa in 1994 and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 – is quoted as having said, “It always seems impossible, until it’s done.”

Completing a three-year strategic plan that supported growth in enrollment, a 2.7 percentage point increase in first-to-second year retention, and many other priority initiatives (see Reinhardt.edu/StrategicPlan), and Raising more than $1.2 million in funding for student scholarships, and more than $4.75 million total for the year.

She also learned the value of planning for the future in such a way that the legacy of her parents, Glenn and Marjorie Hubbard, lives on today as a campus residence hall, the Glenn H. and Marjorie Hubbard Hall.
