Our 17th season was remarkable. We were delighted to bring you entertaining, engaging and timeless performances. While it would be hard to top the incredible performances of last season, I’m so excited for this upcoming season and the fun it brings with it. I truly believe that this, our 18th season, will be the most remarkable season we have had at the Falany Performing Arts Center. I can’t wait for you to experience the performing arts with us.

Now hosting in two venues, I know that each of you will find a performance that speaks to you. This upcoming season has some amazing artists like the Black Market Trust and the Atlanta Chamber Players, as well as captivating jazz performers, blue grass artists, tribute shows, and renowned classical musicians. And, of course, the students from our own University will showcase their incredible talent in several shows. Our 18th season really does offer something for everyone.

We had wonderful performances in the new Reinhardt Theater, and hope you have enjoyed this new performance space just as much as we have. We look forward to seeing what the next season brings to that unique and delightful space.

We thank you for your friendship and support. We look forward to seeing you at our first event, The Coasters, on Sept. 7, and we hope that you will join us over the summer for our new summer series.

The Vienna Boys Choir

Audiences and critics worldwide have praised the talented singers of the Vienna Boys Choir for its celestial voices, rapturous harmonies, pure tone, irresistible charm, and, above all, a wide-ranging repertoire spanning centuries. With a rich history dating back more than 500 years, the Vienna Boys Choir has been associated with many of the world’s great composers, including Mozart and Bruckner; Franz Schubert himself was a chorister. Today, there are 100 choristers from 31 nations between the ages of 10 and 14, divided into four touring choirs. Between them, the four choirs give around 300 concerts and performances each year in front of almost half a million people in virtually all European countries and in Asia, Australia and the Americas.

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra CELEBRATING ITS 75TH SEASON The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra consistently affirms its position as one of America’s leading orchestras by performing great music, presenting great artists, educating and engaging audiences. The Orchestra is known for the excellence of its live performances, presentations, renowned choruses and its impressive list of GRAMMY® Award-winning recordings. The leading cultural organization in the southeast, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra serves as the cornerstone for artistic development and music education in the region. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performs more than 200 concerts each year for a combined audience of more than a half million in a full schedule of performances, which also features educational and community concerts.

The Coasters

PERFORMANCES The Coasters are an American Rhythm & Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll vocal group that had a string of hits in the late 1950s. Beginning with “Searchin'” and “Young Blood,” their most memorable songs were written by the songwriting and producing team Leiber and Stoller. Although the Coasters originated outside of mainstream doo-wop, their records were so frequently imitated that they became an important part of the doo-wop legacy through the 1960s. The Coasters' hits also comprised a major portion of the song score for the 1994 musical revue Smokey Joe’s Café, a retrospective of Leiber & Stoller songs that received one GRAMMY® Award and seven Tony Award nominations following its 1995 Broadway debut. From “Yakety Yak” to “Charlie Brown” to “Poison Ivy,” these monumental songs helped induct The Coasters into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

The Joe Gransden Big Band At 42 years old, Joe Gransden has already performed worldwide and released 14 CDs under his own name. Renowned first for the hard bop approach of his trumpet, Gransden’s singing voice has been compared to that of Chet Baker and Frank Sinatra. The Joe Gransden 16-Piece Big Band is quickly becoming one of the busiest groups on the jazz scene. Originally formed in 2009, Joe and the guys have continued to build momentum and are performing numerous shows around the country. A rising star in the jazz world, they are not one to miss.

Beginnings: A CHICAGO TRIBUTE

“Beginnings” is a celebration of the music of Chicago, performed by world-class musicians and vocalists who recreate the sound, excitement and emotion of three decades of hits from Chicago’s hey-day. Member credits include performances with platinum recording and Hall of Fame rock and soul artists including: Peter Frampton, Don Henley, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, Warren Haynes, Blood Sweat & Tears, Spyro Gyra, KC & the Sunshine Band, Will Lee (The Tonight Show Band) and the Broadway hit musical “Rock of Ages.” The music of 2016 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees Chicago spans more than four decades and includes five No. 1 albums and 20 Top-10 hits. One Night in Memphis:

Get ready for a night of rockabilly, country, gospel and pure 1950s rock and roll with “One Night in Memphis” – a high energy concert that takes you back to Dec. 4, 1956, the night when four of the biggest names in early rock and roll gathered together for an impromptu jam session at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis. This tribute to that memorable night in Memphis when Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis recorded at Sam Phillips’ Sun Studios features nationally acclaimed cast members who have an uncanny sound, look and feel of the original legends; the production also features an authentic and energetic rockabilly backup band.

Red Cedar Review is an acoustic band based in Charleston, South Carolina. Performing a blend of folk, country-blues and bluegrass, they create an energy that invites the listener into the stories told through their music. In July of 2018, Red Cedar Review released their debut album, “The Highway,” a mix of traditional bluegrass standards alongside guitarist/vocalist Brad Edwardson’s original songs.

The Grinch 2018 MOVIE Join the Falany for a fun-filled afternoon with a movie on the big screen, crafts, snacks and Santa Claus. In this updated animated movie, The Grinch attempts to undermine the annual Christmas celebration at Whoville with the help of his loyal dog and reindeer. He disguises himself as Santa Claus and tries to steal all the presents, but his cover is threatened by an earnest young girl. (Rated PG)

An Isaacs' Christmas The Isaacs, a multi-award-winning family group who began singing 35 years ago, are based out of Hendersonville, Tennessee. The vocalists are mother Lily Isaacs and siblings Ben Isaacs, Sonya Isaacs Yeary and Rebecca Isaacs Bowman. Playing their own acoustic instruments and joined by other band members, The Isaacs have a unique style that blends tight family harmony with contemporary acoustic instrumentation that appeals to a variety of audiences. Their musical style has been influenced by many genres of music including bluegrass, rhythm and blues, folk, and country, contemporary, acoustic and southern gospel. They perform frequently at the Grand Ole Opry and are active members on the Gaither Homecoming Videos and Concert Series. The Issacs travel internationally throughout the year and perform to welcoming fans in countries such as South Africa, Norway, Holland, Scotland, Ireland, Israel, Canada and many more.

Black Market Trust Black Market Trust is an American Traditional Pop/Vocal Jazz group from Los Angeles that combines the sounds of the legendary American crooners and vocal groups with the fire and energy of Gypsy Jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Consisting of five world class musicians who have traveled the globe recording and performing on the world’s biggest stages and with music’s most renowned artists, Black Market Trust capitalizes on its experience and pedigree to deliver a high energy, crowd pleasing performance filled with some of the best songs ever written. The live show features material from The Great American Songbook infused with Django’s romantic and virtuosic flavor. Add some intricate vocal harmonies, a dash of Rat Pack-style comedy and it’s clear to audiences why Black Market Trust has quickly earned a reputation as one of the premier live acts performing in music today. Be transported as they meld two distinctly different vibes – one of a gypsy campfire, the other a slick metropolitan nightclub – into a cohesive, stylish sound.

THE BEACH BOYS TRIBUTE

Sail On! The Beach Boys Tribute is a show that focuses on performing songs by America’s Band, The Beach Boys, to sheer perfection. Members of Sail On! have performed with musicians from Brian Wilson’s band, The Zombies, Earth Wind and Fire, Cheap Trick, Mark Lindsay and produced recordings for Micky Dolenz. The group’s young look and authentic sound can only be compared to the original Beach Boys during the prime of their career, creating a wide touring show unlike anything else.

Jukebox Saturday Night Jukebox Saturday Night is a music review of the great Big Bands during the 1930s, 40s and 50s. This fun-filled event for all ages captures the exciting sounds of great melodies and lyrics performed by an energetic group of instrumentalists and vocalists. This show will keep you moving in your seats, tapping your toes and clapping your hands. Jukebox Saturday Night celebrates America’s Swing Era performing the greatest hits as recorded by Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Jimmy Lunceford, Harry James, Artie Shaw, Cab Calloway, Benny Goodman, Bunny Berigan, Count Basie and more. Vocal selections will include songs made famous by Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Bob Eberly, Helen O’Connell, Rosemary Clooney and other vocal idols.

To Johnny Cash

James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash celebrates the life and music of the “Man in Black” with strong conviction and stunning accuracy. Garner and his band faithfully recreate Cash’s biggest hits, such as “Folsom Prison Blues,” “I Walk the Line” and “Ring of Fire,” and incorporate historical accounts and personal anecdotes about America’s most beloved singing storyteller in this not-to-be-missed musical event. The show is a fun, classy and toe-tapping trip down memory lane honoring Johnny Cash’s life and music, and the boom-chicka-boom sound of his signature backing band, The Tennessee Three.

SEASON The Atlanta Chamber Players Founded in 1976 as a mixed ensemble of strings, winds and piano, the Atlanta Chamber Players (ACP) have earned a national reputation as a pioneer among chamber groups and are widely respected as a cultural treasure in the southeast. Over the past 43 years, the ACP has performed critically acclaimed concerts in cities throughout the United States, Europe, and Mexico and has reached many thousands worldwide through radio broadcasts. The ACP has a long-standing commitment to performing the music of living American composers, and has premiered more than 125 works to Atlanta audiences, including world premieres commissioned from Michael Gandolfi, David Amram, Anne LeBaron, John Harbison, Adam Schoenberg and Mark Gresham.

Liverpool Legends

Liverpool Legends are four talented musicians and actors who were handpicked by Louise Harrison – sister of the late George Harrison of The Beatles – to recreate the band that changed the face of music forever. Louise's involvement with Liverpool Legends makes them the only band in the world with a close, direct biological link to the original Fab Four. Liverpool Legends perform songs spanning the entire career of The Beatles and on through the solo years. With precise attention to every musical detail, along with costume changes, vintage instruments and special effects, Liverpool Legends will make you feel like you are watching the real thing. Together, these four lads will bring “A Complete Beatles Experience.”

Join the Falany for a fun-filled afternoon with a movie on the big screen, crafts and snacks. Twelve-year-old Ted lives in a place virtually devoid of nature – no flowers or trees grow in the town of Thneedville. Ted would very much like to win the heart of Audrey, the girl of his dreams, but to do this, he must find that which she most desires: a Truffula tree. To get it, Ted delves into the story of the Lorax, once the gruff guardian of the forest, and the Once-ler, who let greed overtake his respect for nature. (Rated PG)

Bee Gees Gold THE TRIBUTE

John Acosta as Barry Gibb has performed in Bee Gees Tributes all over the world. His portrayal of lead singer Barry Gibb is with a zest for detail, like no other. From the look to the falsetto, you will close your eyes and say it’s Barry. Acosta’s Bee Gees Gold, The Tribute is the ultimate salute, and an experience of seeing the Bee Gees in their prime, live once again. With the detailed vocal stylings of Acosta (Barry), Daryll Borges (Robin) and Jeff Celentano (Maurice) as the brothers Gibb, there are a sensation that will make you blurt out, “Wow, I have just seen and heard the Bee Gees.” Backed by a live band, the Vegas Bee Gees tribute recreates the look and sound of the Bee Gees from the 60s to the late 70s, with their unique falsettos that made them legends.

Sweet Potato Pie Sweet Potato Pie has been entertaining audiences for over a decade with their classy blend of Americana, bluegrass, country and gospel music mixed together in a style they call “sweetgrass.” Radio and TV are well acquainted with their “angelic” vocals from appearances on PBS, the Food Network and worldwide radio broadcasts. Hailed as the “Lennon Sisters of Bluegrass,” their show revolves around their beautiful three-part harmonies, hard driving instrumentals and down-home humor. With classic songs from Patsy Cline, Bill Monroe, The Judds and many more, along with their chart-topping original songs, you are in for a sensational night of family entertainment.

Adam Kossler,GUITARIST American guitarist, Dr. Adam Kossler, will perform works by Shostakovich, Rodrigo, Domeniconi, Merlin and more. Kossler is a top prizewinner in a number of competitions, including the Boston Guitarfest, Columbus Guitar Symposium, East Carolina Guitar Competition, MANC Guitar Competition, Texas International Guitar Competition, Music Teacher National Association Competition and the Appalachian Guitarfest Competition. Kossler’s international performance career has taken him throughout the U.S., Canada and Central America. He has been a featured artist with numerous concert series including the John E. Marlow Guitar Series (Bethesda, Maryland), Isle Newell Concert Series (Appalachicola, Florida) and the Seven Hills Guitar Series (Tallahassee, Florida).

Quey Percussion Duo For more than 15 years, Quey (pronounced “Kway”) Percussion Duo of Gene Koshinski and Tim Broscious has shared its passion for music and the art of percussion with a global audience. Their work with reputable composers such as Emmanuel Séjourné, Alejandro Viñao, Casey Cangelosi and many others has helped expand the repertoire. QPD serves as Artists in Residence at the University of Minnesota Duluth where they teach chamber music and co-direct a graduate percussion program. QPD is endorsed by Pearl/Adams, Sabian, Innovative Percussion and Remo.

Frank Huang, PIANIST

Described by “New York Concert Review” as a “thoughtful and accomplished performer” and that his playing was “impressive for its maturity and refinement,” Frank Huang has gained international recognition for his artistry and technical command. Others have also acknowledged his talents, as the Chopin Foundation of the United States, Northwest Chapter has commented that “Huang plays with authority and panache,” while El Comerico of Lima, Peru praised his interpretation of Mozart’s Piano Concerto, K.482 “with the utmost sensitivity.”

Luther Enloe, GUITARIST Possessing a distinctively resonant sound quality, lyrical phrasing and technical finesse, classical guitarist Luther Enloe has received acclaim for the expressive command of his live performances from both concert presenters and audience members alike. As printed in the “Smoky Mountain Sentinel,” “Luther captivates his audience through the beauty and intensity of his performance, while he engages even those audience members who are less than fans of classical guitar.” Enloe’s programs offer an exciting variety of Spanish and Latin American masterpieces, as well as contemporary works from the U.S. that can be appreciated by all audiences. Marine Corps Band, Reed Quintet Five members of “The President’s Own” Marine Corps Band will be featured in a reed quintet. Clarinet, oboe, saxophone, bass clarinet and bassoon combine to form this unique blend of woodwind instruments sure to entice listeners with their virtuosity and technical prowess. Established by an Act of Congress in 1798, the United States Marine Corps Band is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization. For more than 200 years, the Marine Corps Band has been an integral part of countless events that have helped shape the nation’s identity and unique artistic culture. Now well into its third century of bringing music to the White House and to the American public, “The President’s Own” continues to affirm that the arts are an invaluable bridge between people.

The Reinhardt Chorale is a select choral ensemble under the direction of Dr. Martha Shaw. The group performs as part of the University performing arts series and in churches throughout Georgia. In May 2018, the Reinhardt Chamber Singers – now known as the Reinhardt Chorale – traveled to Italy where they studied music of the Renaissance with the organist of the Vatican and performed in that prestigious venue and in other locations in the country.

The Reinhardt University Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Daniel Kirk, is comprised of advanced and versatile musicians who perform the finest large ensemble and chamber music literature, including world premiere performances from today’s most innovative and exceptional composers. Collaborative programming showcases our student-musicians interacting with Reinhardt's outstanding faculty and visiting guest artists from around the region. At each unique concert experience, audiences join the Wind Ensemble on a journey that uses music to explore a theme, idea or place. The University Wind Ensemble enjoys close community and sharing their musical gifts with audiences while maintaining their primary focus of nurturing musical growth through performance.

The Reinhardt University Concert Choir, also under the direction of Dr. Martha Shaw, is the largest choir at Reinhardt University. Membership is open to the student body and members of the surrounding community. In 2015, members of the Concert Choir performed Randall Thompson’s Testament of Freedom in Carnegie Hall in New York City. The Concert Choir performs several times yearly at the Falany Performing Arts Center.

Whether it is music from the 1920s or the 2010s, the Reinhardt University Jazz Ensemble performs music in an authentic way. Whether it’s a performance with a full-sized big band or a combo, our students will amaze you with virtuosic improvised solos, tight ensemble sounds and exciting shout choruses.

The School of Performing Arts showcases its talented faculty during these concerts. A variety of styles from Baroque through Broadway are performed by the outstanding music faculty on various instruments and through song. Recitals will be announced throughout the season via email, social media postings and at Reinhardt.edu.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre is an extremely focused degree concentrating on the major components of musical theatre – acting, singing and dancing. The ultimate goal of the degree is to prepare students to work in the performance industry. As performances will be held in the University Theater, guests will want to purchase tickets in advance, as seating is limited. Anticipated performances are She Loves Me (Fall 2019) and Chicago (Spring 2020) pending obtainment of performance rights.

Students in the University Theatre Program focus their studies on all aspects of theatre production – acting, directing, technical design and literary analysis. Rigorous rehearsals and intensive training not only prepare these students for careers in the field, but also improve their ability to communicate effectively, to think creatively and to collaborate well with others. As performances will be held in the University Theater, guests will want to purchase tickets in advance as seating is limited.
