Welcome to our 19th Season! Our 18th Season was one we will never forget, as the world stood still amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and we were sad to see so many performances rescheduled, or even cancelled. We hope you will join us for our rescheduled performances as we come together once again. We are so ready to be better – together – for our 19th Season. This year, we are bringing first-time performances to the Falany Performing Arts Center, as well as a variety of returning artists.

Our past seasons in Flint Hall at the Falany have seen unforgettable performances, such as Doc Severinsen, The Vienna Boys Choir, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. We are looking forward to artists like The Platters, the Spivey Hall Children’s Choir, as well as family movies with great activities. Other performances include tribute shows, renowned classical musicians, and our first Bluegrass Festival – finally!

I want to give a special thank you to our Patron Members. As the performing arts have seen devastating impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic, we are thankful our Patrons continue to stand with us and support the performing arts in our community. Thanks to you, we are able to bring entertainment to the community, touch lives of local children, and grow the presence of the performing arts in North Georgia.

On behalf of the Falany PAC team and Reinhardt University, I want to thank you all for allowing us to be part of your lives. We thank you for your time, support, and friendship. I look forward to seeing you during the 2020-2021 season!

SEASON

“TRIBUTE TO THE KING” STARRING TRAVIS LEDOYT

THE TEXAS Gypsies

PERFORMANCES

Travis LeDoyt has been called “World’s Best Young Elvis,” and there are five good reasons why. He looks like Elvis. He sings like Elvis. He moves like Elvis. His personality and mannerisms both on and off stage are strikingly similar to Elvis, and he sells out nearly every show. To those people who think they have seen it all when it comes to Elvis tribute acts, this is the one that makes them do a double take. There is simply no way to describe Travis and his performance except unbelievable.

The Texas Gypsies are a collection of well-seasoned players comprised of GRAMMY® winners and musicians who have backed many of today's top jazz, swing, and pop performers. Some of these acts include: The Blues Brothers, The Jacksons, Paul McCartney and Wings, Ray Charles, and Ella Fitzgerald.

Travis flawlessly captures the essence of Elvis in his prime and restricts his shows to the hits and ambience of 1954-1964. Utilizing a three-piece band featuring guitar, bass, and drums (augmented with backing tracks for songs that require extra orchestration), Travis takes his audience back to the fun and excitement of an early 1960’s Elvis concert. For those who missed seeing an Elvis concert during those years, it is a chance to relive the excitement and aura of an Elvis show and the fun and energy experienced by the audiences.

They are known for their unique take on Classic Jazz and Swing music from the 1920’s Gatsby era to the 1940’s Big Band sound (Frank Sinatra – Dean Martin). They also perform the Parisian Swing or Gypsy Jazz style (Django Reinhardt) and the Western or Texas Swing sound (Bob Wills). Some of the Texas Gypsies’ musicians are from New Orleans, bringing in Bourbon Street Jazz songs and Mardi Gras music.

The Platters

PERFORMANCES

Multiplatinum, rock ‘n’ roll vocal and GRAMMY® Hall of Fame member, The Platters were originally comprised of founder and naming members Herb Reed, Tony Williams, Paul Robi, Zola Taylor, and David Lynch. In 1955, the quintet crashed through the racial divide that existed in the United States paving the way for them to become one of the preeminent vocal groups of all time. With classics such as “The Great Pretender,” “Only You” and their rendition of “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” The Platters’ vocal evolution continues to this day through the crisp, vocal stylings of members Wayne Miller, Adele “DD” Galinda Martin, Kenny Williams, Lance Bernard Bryant, all under the musical direction of Michael Larson. The talented vocalists who comprise today’s touring group continue to open the hearts and minds of new generations of music consumers to the rich vocal and historical tradition.

Saturday, March 13 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Adults: $40-$45; Seniors: $35-$40; Children: $10-$15

Purists Beware! Tray Dahl & The Jugtime Ragband is not jug band, ragtime, or Dixieland. It is an energetic amalgamation of all the popular styles of the 1920’s-30’s – jazz, a little blues, a bit of swing, a pinch of old-time gospel, and even classic show tunes – all immersed in an early 20th Century New Orleans sound. They get people’s feet stomping in a roaring 20’s kind of way. Their sound has been described by many as “speakeasy” or “prohibition era” music. Their songs match the early New Orleans jazz/blues instrumentation combo of tenor banjo and trumpet with upbeat Dixieland and swing tempos underlying a heavy dose of powerful 1920’s inspired vocals stylistically akin to Bessie Smith, Clara Smith, and Louis Armstrong. Their main influences include Louis Prima, Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong and the Boswell Sisters. They play songs composed by some of the best songwriters from the early and mid-20th Century alongside original tunes which are heavily influenced by their work.

Friday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Adults: $25 - $30; Seniors: $20-$25; Children: $10 5

The Landscape of Guitar

Performing fiery Spanish guitar pieces like “Malaguena” to the vocal harmonies of “Sounds of Silence,” this duo takes the art of guitars to another dimension with their new animated painting concert experience. A colorful backdrop of lush vibrant painted landscapes based on the guitar theme flows through the concert. Moving in 3-D, guitar birds fly through guitar mountains and over guitar rivers, cities, and oceans. The paintings come alive with music in this unforgettable surround art experience. Master guitarist Bruce Hecksel and singer-songwriter Julie Patchouli blend music from their two musical projects Terra Guitarra and Patchouli. Terra Guitarra is reviewed as “one of the top nuevo-flamenco groups in the world” – Zone Music Reporter. They have four, top-5 international charting albums including Of Sea & Stars winner of “Best Instrumental Album of the Year 2017.” Public Radio favorite Patchouli features Julie’s sparkling lead vocals, beautiful duets, and award-winning compositions. The Chicago Tribune says the duo’s “songs about harmony & healing inspire the human spirit.” See and hear “the harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel, the guitar brilliance of the Gipsy Kings and the colors of Van Gogh.”

7 Bridges is a tour de force of talent, combining incredible musicianship, vocal precision and a stage presence that has garnered them nationwide acclaim. The University Opera program develops and prepares students for professional roles in opera. As performances will be held in the University Theater, as well as in Flint Hall at the Falany, guests will want to check their tickets to ensure they know which location to attend.

Students in the University Theatre program focus their studies on all aspects of theatre production – acting, directing, technical design, and literary analysis. Rigorous rehearsals and intensive training not only prepare these students for careers in the field, but also improve their ability to communicate effectively, to think creatively, and to collaborate well with others. As performances will be held in the University Theater, guests will want to purchase tickets in advance as seating is limited.

SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN Smoke on the Mountain tells the story of a Saturday Night Gospel Sing at a country church in North Carolina’s Smoky Mountains in 1938. The show features two dozen rousing bluegrass songs played and sung by the Sanders Family, a traveling group enlisted by the church’s pastor to help bring his tiny congregation into “the modern world.” By the evening’s end, the Sanders Family have endeared themselves to us by revealing their weaknesses and allowing us to share in their triumphs.
