Unveiling

And just like that it’s springtime. The dreary winter snow begins to melt, the trees begin to bud, and the temperatures begin to rise. With it, new life is infused into the air, both literally and metaphorically.

There’s no better place to celebrate springtime in Colorado than Cherry Creek. Patio dining, flowers in bloom, colorful fashions, and afternoon strolls with family and friends (both two and four-legged) are just a few of the things we cherish about our neighborhood this time of year. In Ten Things to Love (page 60) we explore all things spring in Cherry Creek.

In this issue, we also unveil our first ever Dining Guide (page 77). From bucket list restaurant experiences to casual dining, to takeout, cocktails, and even dessert, we’ve uncovered the old classics and hidden gems that make Cherry Creek the most dynamic dining scene in the state.

From there, we head south to The Broadmoor (page 35) where we explore the great outdoors in true luxury. Join us as we take a trip to the storied resort’s myriad outdoor respites – The Ranch at Emerald Valley, Cloud Camp, and the Broadmoor’s Fly Fishing Camp. It’s the wild west as you’ve never seen it before.

We’re also peeking inside a stunning home in Cherry Hills Village (page 50), learning more about Denver-based jewelry designer Lindsay Bloom Backman (page 48) and getting to know local merchants like HW Home’s Ron Werner (page 38) and motherdaughter duo Michelle DeHaven and Allie Marchese of Haven Collective (page 40)

Here’s to ditching the winter doldrums and welcoming spring in style.

Gratefully yours,

BRYANT PALMER

Bryant Palmer first met the team at CherryArts in 2015, when he helped them plan and produce a September arts festival at the construction site of what would one day become Stanley Marketplace. That festival ran for five years, with Bryant as the point person at Stanley, where he handled marketing, communications, and community building from that project’s inception through the summer of 2021. During that time he also launched his own marketing and PR agency, Oh Hey Creative, and now works with CherryArts and many other arts organizations and food and beverage businesses throughout Colorado and beyond. “I built my business around two of the things I love the most: art and food,” he says. Besides running Oh Hey, Bryant spends his time playing tennis, reading books, and traveling with his husband, Jay Gallagher, especially to his former home in New York City and Jay’s parents’ place in Vermont.

Read Bryant’s tips for navigating the Cherry Creek Arts Festival like a pro on page 71.

IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Denver-based Nadia Watts has opened a chic new pop-up shop - the coveted designer’s first - in the former Ginny Williams Gallery space in the heart of Cherry Creek North. Watts, whose great-great grandfather was famed lamp designer and fine jewelry heir Louis Comfort Tiffany, recently launched a special collection with Kravet; Nadia Watts: The Gem Collection. Inspired by the iconic colored glass of her family heritage, the collection Kravet X Nadia Watts can be found at the Cherry Creek pop-up, along with vintage and modern furnishings and accessories personally curated by Watts.

SOCIALLY SPEAKING

Utah-based artist Brad Overton has made a name for himself with his contemporary, realist paintings. From his latest collection that features pop-art style interpretations of Coors Banquet cans, to his imaginative, extremely realistic paintings of vintage western toy figures, we are all in on Brad Overton and love following his Instagram page.

CIAO, BELLA

Italy’s largest furniture house is saying, “Benissimo!” to Cherry Creek North as Natuzzi Italia prepares to become a new neighbor. The northwest corner of 1st Avenue and Detroit Street intends on using its 7,200 square feet to entice guests with their high end, made-in-Italy sofas, armchairs, bedroom, dining room, and living room décor and accessories. There’s a reason that, in 1993, Natuzzi Group became the only foreign furniture company to list on Wall Street, and the 64-year-old brand will now be front-andcenter to locals who appreciate the finer things in life when it comes to their home. Whether it’s leather, fabric, marbles, metals or woods, award-winning, international designers are at your service.

TRES MAGNIFIQUE

A touch of Paris is joining the neighborhood this spring when Roche Bobois Paris settles in to the corner of 1st Avenue and Fillmore Street in the unit previously occupied by Hermès. A world leader in furniture design and distribution, Roche Bobois works closely with renowned designers like Marcel Wanders, Kenzo Takada, Ora Ito, Cédric Ragot, Sacha Lakic, Christophe Delcourt and Stephen Burks and with haute couture fashion houses such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Missoni and Christian Lacroix Maison. Offering a broad range of exclusive made-to-order designs and manufactured with a high level of customization in small European workshops, collections include sofas, armchairs, cocktail tables, dining chairs, sideboards, beds, wardrobes, storage and accessories including lighting, cushions and rugs.

FIT TO BE THAIED

The dining scene in Cherry Creek just got stronger. Le Colonial, a fine dining restaurant marrying Vietnamese and French cuisine, plans to open in 6,500 square feet of the seven-story project at 255 Fillmore Street later this year. “We could not be more excited about bringing our beloved Le Colonial restaurant to the vibrant and great neighborhood of Cherry Creek,” says Le Colonial co-owner Rick Wahlstedt. Le Colonial boasts of offering its guests “a romantic, dreamy and escapist atmosphere reminiscent of Saigon in the 1920s.” Having dined at their Chicago location, we can vouch for an unforgettable dining experience and a menu featuring the likes of pan seared chicken dumplings, seafood ceviche, crispy shrimp & pork rolls, naoi style monkfish, and sate spiced filet mignon, to name a few.

GO FISH

The award-winning group that introduced Uchi in the RiNo District with its non-traditional take on Japanese cuisine is slated to open Uchiko in early 2024. The corner of Fillmore Street and 3rd Avenue where the Ginny Williams Gallery sat for years will transform into a full cocktail bar, private dining room, outdoor patio seating and sushi bar, and will seat approximately 175 people. Uchiko, which means “child of Uchi,” will focus on its forte of raw fish and wood-fired items as well as a Japanese whisky selection, yakitori grilled options, and customized classic cocktails. “It’s now time for Uchiko to start spreading its wings outside of Texas,” said Hai CEO Tony Montero. “The Denver community has been extremely welcoming to us since we opened Uchi in 2018 and Cherry Creek is such a charming and dynamic neighborhood, we thought it was the perfect setting for Uchiko.”

BEST SANDWICHES…

When my wife suggested we feature the best sandwiches of Cherry Creek for our latest rendition of The List, I almost cried and suggested that we renew our vows. Twist my arm to sample the best in the business. I was not disappointed. The sandwich game is alive and well in the neighborhood with something for everyone. - Kevin Marr

The Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich

DEL FRISCO’S GRILLE

The perfect brioche bun that’s soft and freshly made. A flawless piece of fried chicken. Everything on this sandwich is perfectly placed. Shaved lettuce, pickles, and….that….sauce! Spicy

Truffle Citrus Mayo to be exact. Del Frisco’s Grille always nails the sauces with their dishes, regardless of the order. This sandwich needs to be eaten. This needs to be celebrated. A spectacular meal from a restaurant where spectacular seems to be the norm.

SNARF’S SANDWICHES

Start with the bread. Soft, flaky, baked fresh on-site. White, wheat or gluten-free. While it’s not always about the bread, it’s kind of always about the bread. It’s the perfect proportion to host the main event, which is mouthwatering Italian spicy meat and cheese with the likes of salami, pepperoni, capicola, mortadella and provolone. Lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and onions solidify this foot-long masterpiece. Sure, you can get a smaller sandwich at Snarf’s, but why the hell would you go and do that? Director of Marketing Helen Wood adds, “It’s not uncommon for us to have East Coast transplants tell us our Italian is the closest thing in Denver to one they can get in a New York deli.”

125 Adams Street eatsnarfs.com

A Proper Turkey Club LOCAL JONES

Good for Local Jones for rolling out a classic. This is definitely a proper Turkey Club, and this delicious rendition disappeared from our plate rather quickly. Start with the buttery grilled bread. You could end there too because that’s an all-star move. They nailed it and made the traditional three pieces manageable and not overpowering. Couple this with crispy warm bacon, lean River Bear turkey, cool lettuce and tomatoes and an amazing aioli sauce. In a word, “BOOM.” Accompanied with their “I can’t-stop-eating these” shoestring fries, this meal took us back to some fond Club sandwich-eating memories. This deserves to be on the list, and we’ll be back for another one soon.

Turkey Pastrami

CULINARY DROPOUT

If you put out a pastrami sandwich then you’re going to get our attention. And, in this case, we’re glad you did. The spice of the turkey pastrami, that hint of Swiss, the tanginess of the Thousand Island dressing and the crunch and sweetness of the coleslaw made for phenomenal chemistry, all the while sandwiched between a pretzel roll that not only kept it all together, but took it to another level with its baked-in-house flavor. Take it a step further by not only ordering the fries, but also putting a few in the sandwich. That’s right. We said it. Make a great sandwich greater with a few French Fries and thank us later. Dijon mustard is also offered on the sandwich, however we did without. Either way, it’s a guaranteed winner.

URBAN EGG

This is a must-try. Phenomenal flavors. And we applaud any restaurant that gets creative like this and goes for it with a permanent spot on their menu. It’s a murderers’ row of ingredients mixed in with a few surprises that make it thoroughly authentic and all Urban Egg. Grilled ham. Swiss. Applewood smoked bacon. Dressed greens. Tomato. Black Peppercorn Mustard Aioli. A fried egg. And currently our favorite piece of bread in the neighborhood in the form of a pressed baguette. Sometimes, too much on a sandwich can get tricky. This is not one of those times. The ingredients are all friends and they complement each other to a point where you need to eat this to believe this.

OMG Grilled Cheese

POSTINO 9CO

This is an appropriately named grilled cheese. “OMG” is the PG-rated response that we gave out loud after the first bite. Layered gruyere. Whipped brie. Goat cheese. White cheddar. And then they introduce the cow and the goat to the pig with some smoked bacon. All of this is served on what they call their Postino Loaf, which has roots with one of our favorites….sourdough. They couple it with a creamy tomato soup dip. This sandwich is cheese royalty and it seems like a royal family where everyone gets along. At least it sure tastes like it.

Famous Meatball Sandwich

NORTH ITALIA

Braised meatballs, marinara, scamorza cheese. There’s a reason that the meatball sandwich at North is legendary. This is not your grandmother’s meatball sub - it’s an inventive take on a classic that is undoubtedly more sophisticated than the run-of-the mill deli iterations. Herb Schiacciata bread gives it a twist, elevating the Italian favorite to new heights. Try it with the house made parmesan herb fries - they’re worth the extra calories.

WILD LUXURY AT THE BROADMOOR

@ CHERRYCREEKMAG
- DIRECTION -

A TRIFECTA OF COVETED WILDERNESS EXPERIENCES

Standing on the foothills as the gateway to the Rocky Mountains is The Broadmoor – one of the West’s most historic and iconic resorts. Originally a casino in the late 1800’s, when cowboys roped up their horses for a getaway of drinking and gambling, the property became a luxury resort in 1918, but in its DNA is certainly “Where the West Begins.”

The grand dame of Colorado’s historic resorts, The Broadmoor has long been one of our favorite retreats. This year, the resort is helping guests take a vacation on the wild side with a new all-inclusive option that links the resort plus all three of its wilderness properties: two nights at Cloud Camp, two nights at the Ranch at Emerald Valley, two nights at Fly Fishing Camp and one night at the main resort.

Here’s where you can take the reins of the West but retire to modern luxuries at the end of day. And there is a spa to take care of those dirty hands. Situated on 5,000 acres, The Broadmoor has a trio of luxe wilderness properties (Cloud Camp, Fly Fishing Camp, and The Ranch at Emerald Valley) and three attractions: The Broadmoor Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway, Seven Falls and The Broadmoor Soaring Adventures zip line experience.

One can spend the day fly fishing, horseback riding, on exhilarating cattle drives, hiking, relaxing in hot tubs, and exploring the ancient sport of falconry. Or, for the less wild at heart, golfing on the resort’s two championship courses or taking in a pickleball lesson or tennis drill.

36 SPRING 2023

THE RANCH AT EMERALD VALLEY

Nestled among the lush beauty of Pike National Forest (100,000 acres), the Ranch at Emerald Valley is a special retreat where guests can hike scenic trails, fly fish in private lakes or explore the mountains on horseback before returning to 13 luxurious private cabins. Broadmoor chefs are at the ready to serve five-star meals. Guests experience unsurpassed service and premium lodging that goes above and beyond in every respect. This is 2023, not 1883.

THE BROADMOOR RESORT

It’s the smell of oak. Jazz emanating from hidden ceiling speakers. Stunning décor bursting with custom woodwork, paintings of the Colorado outdoors and history of yesteryear, crystal chandeliers, gold floral wallpaper, and 20foot floor-to-ceiling drapes. Fountains pepper the grounds with their soothing splashes, orchestrating yet another dreamy soundtrack with a mountain backdrop studded in majestic pine. This is the legendary Broadmoor.

The Broadmoor campus itself has more than a dozen restaurants, cafes and lounges; nearly 800 rooms, suites and private accommodations; a Forbes Five Star spa; two championship golf courses; award-winning tennis; 19 beautifully curated retail boutiques, and a myriad of additional activities like rock climbing, as well as a host of family-oriented programs for every season.

The Spa at The Broadmoor offers an oasis from the stresses of daily life, offering unique services that harness the qualities of nature and cater specifically to the needs of Colorado’s climate, like an oxygen room aimed at reducing the effects of altitude with 88 percent pure oxygen.

CLOUD CAMP

Cloud Camp is a hideaway atop Cheyenne Mountain 3,000 feet above, and 10,000 feet above sea-level offering 360-degree views that provide a picture-perfect backdrop for guided nature walks and luxurious lodge living. This unique site features 15 one- and two-bedroom cabins, a unique fire tower suite, and six guest rooms within the lodge. Guests at Cloud Camp also enjoy an array of included activities, such as mule rides, disc golf, hiking, and cooking classes - making it an ideal destination for private getaways as well as groups, family reunions, and corporate retreats.

What was true back in the early days is still true today: The Broadmoor mixes adventure with relaxed luxury and Western hospitality, framed by stunning scenic views and inspiring mountains. What’s your impression of the people, the neighborhood, and working in Cherry Creek North?

Cherry Creek is one of Denver’s unique neighborhoods. It’s well known across Colorado and continues to attract people as the most dynamic shopping district and Denver’s highest concentration of locally owned stores. It’s a true Denver gem that cannot be replicated. Our HW Home Flagship store opened here in 2004 - nearly 20 years ago. We are grateful to witness the evolution in quality, style, and locality in our neighborhood. These attributes really make CCN one of the best neighborhoods in Colorado.

Do you have any neighborhood favorites?

Obviously, I am biased. Each time I walk into our store, I smile. What really makes me smile and what confirms my thesis is how often I hear people in HW Home saying things like: “This store is so beautiful, I love everything in here, everyone here is so nice and helpful.” Our goal from day one was to bring designer-centric style, merchandise, and quality to the retail street for everyone to enjoy and afford. As for food, I confess a minor obsession with the chicken parmesan pizza at Quality Italian.

Most memorable HW Home moment you’ve witnessed so far? This was more of a socio-economic unofficial study. Last summer I arrived early one Saturday to wash our windows. They were filthy and, as everyone knows, we’ve been dealing with a labor shortage. I believe that leaders lead by doing. Let’s say it was my version of the television show “Undercover Boss.” My employees didn’t realize their boss was the window washer for about 45 minutes, which was expected as I didn’t announce myself nor make a fuss. I simply went to work in my ball cap and sweatshirt. The real revelation was in how people walking down the street responded to/treated the window washer. Of the 300+ people who passed by me, only two said hello. One had washed

HW HOME

The moment you step into HW Home in Cherry Creek, you immediately know that you’re going to experience something special. The attention to detail. The thoughtful placement and tactful choices of product and accessories, ranging from furniture, books and home decor and everything in between. It all conveys the warm, inviting sense of….well, home. In our latest installment of Man About Town, we sit down with the W in HW Home, Ron Werner, to learn more about the business, his perfect day, and why home is where the heart is.

windows and commented that he knows it’s hard work. One woman entering my store looked up and asked, “Don’t you own this store?” to which I responded, “Yes and our windows were dirty.”

I concluded my four-hour experiment with a couple takeaways. First, we always need to treat all human beings as people with kindness. That saying hello and smiling to as many people as we can each day will improve our world, and that window washing is hard work. It’s important to step out of our comfort zones to see the world from a new perspective.

What’s the last movie that you’ve enjoyed watching? Where the Crawdads Sing. Pay attention to the end of the movie!

Do you read? Do you have a book or website that you’re enjoying at the moment?

I am re-reading Theodore Herzl’s The Jewish State

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Above all, be honest, work hard, and treat people like human beings.

DEL FRISCO’S GRILLE

We’re married. We work together. We see each other all the time. So, what could we possibly talk about while out for dinner? In this case, food. And lots of it. Join us at Del Frisco’s Grille.

He: I have been looking forward to this dinner. So much so that I have been studying the menu online. So, as Matt Damon said in Goodwill Hunting, “Let’s do it. I’m pumped. Let the healing begin.”

She: I cannot believe that I have never had dinner here. So excited to explore – everything looks amazing.

He: Where have these cheesesteak egg rolls been my whole life? I’m coming back for these again, and this sweet and spicy chili sauce that accompanies it is incredible.

She: My butternut squash bisque is equally incredible. It’s cold out tonight and this really hits the spot without being too heavy at the start of a meal. The nutmeg I taste reminds me of the holidays. Which is perhaps the only redeeming thing about this streak of cold weather.

He: These sticky garlic ribs are another star. These are those great St. Louis ribs, nice and tender with this Gochujang honey glaze. Beautiful start with the appetizers, and, as is my tradition at a steakhouse, the wedge salad is a must as well.

She: Agreed. So far, this is my favorite item. I love the way they infused crispy garlic – it’s a great texture in addition to flavor.

He: You can’t think Del Frisco’s and not think about a steak. This New York strip is terrific, but I’ll tell you what…what might steal this scene are the mashed potatoes with this marvelous horseradish butter. I’ve never experienced this flavor before with my mash. This is eye opening and it goes great with the steak.

I am a filet girl, and theirs does not disappoint. Glad I ordered it Oscar-style as well. The bearnaise sauce, asparagus, and crab meat is the perfect addition. But if I am being really honest, per usual, my favorite dishes are the sides.

He: Speaking of, did I just unknowingly embarrass you in front of our server over Brussels sprouts? My apologies, Bets!

She: Ha! No, of course not. I just felt a little silly ordering a third side on my own, behind the truffled mac and cheese and your potatoes. But I’ll suffer embarrassment for these crispy Brussels sprouts any day. The bacon and balsamic glaze really takes them over the top.

He: Moving on to dessert. The GM here, Gavin Berry, raves about the lemon cake, and now I understand why. Neat story about how guests came here once and the cake wasn’t available, so they hunted it down at the Del Frisco’s in Greenwood Village.

She: Yep. It’s a destination dessert!

He: It’s hard not to notice the CLMBR studio sign across the street. I wonder if that’s both literal and figurative in my needing to work out tomorrow.

She: I also love this Nutella bread pudding. It’s rich, decadent, and downright flawless.

He: This is a good date spot, and it seems like every table and booth is hosting one. Low lights. Romantic. An attractive restaurant interior. Meanwhile, through the open kitchen (which I LOVE because I’m a looky-loo), you can see restaurant staff busting their ass to deliver everyone a perfect evening. Lots of respect for that.

She: I couldn’t agree more. And with two wild little boys at home, it’s a nice respite. Great food, great ambiance and great company. What more could we ask for?

CHUCK JONES OF LOCAL JONES

When you’re at the helm of the designated watering hole at a premier hotel like Halcyon, you’re going to have some amazing skills, incredible experiences, and more than a few good stories to tell. Chuck Jones is the man behind the bar at Local Jones (no relation). So, what better opportunity in keeping up with the Joneses than to learn a few things from Chuck in our latest edition of Bar Cart?

What’s the best drink we’ve never had?

The Killer Bee from the Sunshine Beach Shack on the island of Nevis. Nevis is a special place for my wife and me, and this drink brings back great memories. It is the perfect rum cocktail with passion fruit, honey, and black pepper.

Is there a cocktail with a particularly interesting backstory that you appreciate?

Gin & Tonic, for sure. I love the story that in order to get British soldiers to drink quinine (malaria prevention), the trick was to add gin. With that, the drink was born and has endured for decades as one of the most classic cocktails there is.

How did you get into the industry?

I was a lifeguard making five dollars an hour, and my buddy was a server at Bennigan’s. One day when we were meeting up, he showed me the $100 he made that shift. I immediately reported to Bennigan’s and sweet talked my way into a server’s job.

What’s the vibe at Local Jones? Friendly, fun, homeaway-from-home, and an unpretentious neighborhood bar that offers sophisticated cocktails alongside old classics. It’s the best of both worlds.

What’s the funniest or strangest thing you’ve ever overheard from a patron while behind the bar? Closing out the bar when I had a couple at the end of the bar, the lady let me know that she was a former Playmate. As I was finishing the night, I heard some giggling and the next thing I know, a very large brassiere landed on my head.

Is there a particular drink that you love to make? Classic stirred Sazerac

What’s the oddest drink order you’ve ever received? Scotch and warm milk

Where do you get your inspiration?

I like to create experiences for my guests, turning a person’s day around. For example, I have one couple that has one hour, every Tuesday, that is their only time without the kids. I strive to make that one hour special and memorable.

What’s a springtime cocktail that you recommend? My go-to is a Salty Dog, but the fan favorite of our guests is “Tell Me I’m Pretty.”

Take the Local Jones vibe home with this delicious cocktail recipe, perfect for beginners and mixology aficionados alike…

WHAT WE’RE CURRENTLY WATCHING + READING

SHRINKING

I’m normally buying whatever Jason Segel is selling, and my man delivers yet again in this thoughtfully dark comedy about a grieving therapist who starts to tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, Segel, with the accompaniment of a fantastic cast of characters, finds himself making huge changes to people’s lives - including his own. The real treat is Harrison Ford, whose comedic timing, dry wit, and curmudgeonly attitude steals each and every scene he’s in.

Watch it on Apple TV +

THE PALE BLUE EYE

If Christian Bale is going to take the time to do the project, then I’m going to take the time to watch it. In my opinion, he’s one of the great actors of his generation. Bale stars as a world-weary detective who’s hired to investigate the murder of a West Point cadet. Stymied by the cadets’ code of silence, he enlists one of their own to help unravel the case - a young man the world would come to know as Edgar Allan Poe. Harry Melling explodes as Poe, giving the audience an equally intoxicating figure opposite Bale, and the twist at the end gives the film one last, lovely splash. Watch it on NETFLIX

TAR

I loved this movie, even if I had questions after the fact that a smarter viewer or film critic would pick up. But that’s the beauty of art, everything is subjective and, in the case of Tar, I found everything highly addicting and flawless in this slow burn of a psychological drama set in the international world of Western classical music. The film centers on the always perfect Cate Blanchett’s Lydia Tár, widely considered one of the greatest living composer-conductors and the very first female director of a major German orchestra. The Oscar nominated editing and cinematography were stars in their own right, while the gradual build that is this house of cards grips you in wondering what’s next and what’s the end game. Nominated for six Academy Awards was not a mistake. A lot of talented people brought their A game to this unforgettable film. Watch it on Prime Video

LINDSAY BLOOM BACKMAN BLOOM JEWELRY

Lindsay Bloom is the founder and designer of Bloom Jewelry, a coveted collection of accessories that mix raw materials and gemstones with polished metals. Known for her signature wire-wrapped look as well as her contemporary diamond collection, Lindsay has established a nationally known presence on the jewelry scene. As an artist, entrepreneur and mother, she always finds herself seeking balance and beauty– both in her designs and in life. Here, we chat with Lindsay about her process, her inspiration, and the future of Bloom Jewelry.

Talk a bit about yourself and your background.

I grew up on the East Coast and went to college on the West Coast, which is where I met my husband, who’s a Colorado native. We have been living in Denver for the past 18 years and have two energetic boys (9 and 11). My work and home life are my Yin and my Yang: complete opposites that are both a lot of work but spark so much joy.

Tell us about the evolution of Bloom. How did you discover your love for jewelry design?

As a teenager, I apprenticed with a jewelry designer and quickly fell in love with the design process, working with my hands, and learning about gemstones and the infinite possibilities at my fingertips. That passion followed me through college, when I moved to Los Angeles and had the Jewelry District in my backyard. I wrote a business plan for college credit and officially started the journey, turning a childhood dream into a career. Living so close to the district gave me access to what felt like an underground world. I was also able to make connections with TV personalities and stylists, giving me great initial exposure to grow the Bloom brand.

Where has your design inspiration come from?

While we research the season’s Pantone colors and upcoming trends, the real inspiration lies in the materials we find that are new and interesting and exciting to work with. I love to travel, which influences the design process as well. I’ve created a coastal collection in a remote fishing village in Mexico, a turquoise and leather collection in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and an indigo-andivory-inspired collection after an influential trip to the Greek Islands.

What, specifically, is inspiring you right now?

The “beachy” trend in accessories is really inspiring me right now. Having grown up on the Connecticut shore, I’m a beach girl at heart. Using elements like coconut, rattan, wood, and freshwater pearls, this collection is chic yet textured and organic. My favorites are the airy rattan hoops and cable bangles.

Do you have a favorite gemstone or metal to work with?

If I had to narrow it down by what is in abundance in my personal jewelry box, turquoise, emerald, opal, pearl, lapis and labradorite. Our favorite metal to work with is 14k Gold-filled because it gives you the quality to last a lifetime like 14k but a friendlier price point.

48 SPRING 2023 artist in residence

Talk about the design process. Do you have a favorite part of that process?

Our design process begins when we head to the world’s largest gem show in Tucson, Arizona. This is my favorite part of the job. It is real-life treasure hunting. We do our homework ahead of time, researching color and trends for the upcoming seasons. But the inspiration really begins in the search. A true gem scavenger hunt unfolds as we seek rare, new, and unusual textures, cuts, and shapes of gemstones. What we find at the show will inspire the collections to come.

What can you tell us about your next collection?

We have personalized gifts for Mother’s Day with our build-your-own charm bar exclusive and our birthstone collection. And for summer bangle bracelets are back as well as beach inspired jewelry. Silver is also making a statement this year, so we have many of our best sellers now offered in sterling silver or two-tone silver mixed with gold. And currently I’m loving our Green Opal collection, which after a long winter is a refreshing pop of color. These opals were my favorite find on our last gem buying trip. They just feel special and put off happy energy.

Do you have a favorite design from your archives?

The Signature Bangle, and our Triple Wrap Hoops. All of my bridesmaids were gifted these pieces to wear in my wedding 15 years ago, and they are still timeless best sellers in the Bloom Collection today. I wear my bangle every day which is cool when you think of all the adventures it has accompanied me on! The hoops are lightweight, and the cut of the wire makes them reflect light, so they have a sort of shimmer to them.

As an artist yourself, who are your other favorite artists?

I love supporting local and these are both Colorado artists.

Samantha Louise Fine Jewelry

I specifically love Samantha’s “Totem rings” she creates for people using these custom bands to narrate individual stories, adventures and memories.

Cora Sexton Wheeler of CSextonW Studio

Cora and I met through a joint trunk show and I immediately fell in love with her both as a person and as a talented artist. Her use of color and texture in her three-dimensional artwork varies from landscape, to floral, to tapping into her native Colorado mountain roots. She is currently making a custom piece for us.

CAPE COD MEETS CHERRY HILLS

Some homes exude a beauty so authentic, so classic, that they overwhelm us with a sense of nostalgia from the moment we enter. The residence at 17 Mockingbird Lane is one such home. After purchasing the stately abode in the coveted enclave of Old Cherry Hills, the homeowners engaged two of the city’s best - architecture and interior design firm Chalet, and builder Haley Custom Homes – to reimagine the lovely but undoubtedly dated Cape Cod.

Throughout the process, every distinctive detail was meticulously chosen to create a vibe that was equal parts sophisticated and serene. “The homeowners took great care to ensure exceptional quality while still making the space feel warm and comfortable,” explains listing agent Ann Kerr of Kentwood Properties.

Mission accomplished. The entire home was overhauled and brought up-to-date by way of light, neutral colors and a focus on rich textures and quality finishes as opposed to busy prints and bold colors. White-on-white walls and millwork throughout lend cohesion and levity to the home, allowing its classic Cape Cod architecture to take center stage.

BY BETSY MARR | ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN : CHALET COLORADO | BUILDER: HALEY CUSTOM HOMES

One of the most dramatic changes was the home’s kitchen. What was once a boxed in floorplan with outdated finishes became a gourmet showstopper. The footprint was opened, giving room for the kitchen to function as a true chef’s Shangri-la, replete with a coveted Lacanche range in powder blue. Natural, light wood beams were added – a dramatic change in both look and feel. Wallto-wall French doors were built that lead onto the twoacre property’s gorgeous patio. The breakfast nook, which boasts a fireplace evocative of a French chateau brims with charm while the newly built butler’s pantry and prep kitchen wows in both form and function. Navy cabinetry, satin brass hardware, a farmhouse sink, and mosaic penny tile are as timeless as they are on trend.

Nearby, the home’s large great room is cozy and inviting. A bright sunroom with private patio is a perfect workfrom-home space, while the main floor owner’s suite with a pristine spa-like bath and dual closets with laundry epitomizes luxury living. Upstairs are four additional gabled bedrooms, completely renovated baths, a separate laundry room, and an oversized great room perfect for watching movies and playing games.

Outdoors, the almost two-acre lot boasts a private pool with its own half bath, lush landscaping, and a custom fire pit.

Seventeen Mockingbird Lane was sold by Ann Kerr in record time, for a record price.

THE REAL STATE OF REAL ESTATE

WITH FOUNDING PARTNER, COMPASS DENVER

Jeff Hendley

We sat down with Denver’s most recognizable realtor to set the record straight on what’s really going on in one of the country’s hottest housing markets.

The rocket ship otherwise known as the Denver real estate market continues to roar, but for how much longer? While other markets around the country show telling signs of waning, Colorado might end up being the exception. In fact, Denver housing prices are not only among the most expensive in Colorado, but they are also some of the most expensive in the

“In the past three years, Denver has attracted enormous wealth as buyers from California, Texas, and New York have flooded the market, bringing with them the liquidity and funds to push our ultra-luxury market to never-before-seen levels,” Compass Denver Founding Agent Jeff Hendley explains. “While the overall market has cooled, there are more in-market high end buyers than ever before.”

REAL ESTATE

Yet these buyers, despite their means, are still facing a shortage of properties to purchase. “Cherry Creek is very competitive. The most desirable listings sell above list price and go pending in around 3 days, with 25% of the total listings in 2023 selling above list price thus far,” Hendley says. According to DMAR (Denver Metro Association of Realtors), on average, homes in Cherry Creek sell after 8.5 days on the market.

“It’s been roughly three years since the market began its acceleration,” Hendley continues. “And with exceptions of the occasional pause and seasonal declines, it’s maintained its overall upward movement.”

The high-end continues to mark higher-highs but it’s more opportunity-driven than before. “Buyers continue to drive the market, but they’re buying for lifestyle instead of fear of missing out like in years past,” Hendley remarks.

As the central banks attempt to control inflation by increasing interest rates, they’ve also created a dip in the housing market. Yet in Colorado, an expected slowdown has yet to materialize.

Indeed, Colorado’s ultra-luxury market continues to thrive. “The luxury market did the opposite of what headlines were predicting,” Hendley says. “Instead of plummeting prices, we continue to see appreciation month-over-month.” Because luxury buyers rely less on credit, their buying decisions are typically less impacted by spikes in interest rates and more so by the stock market or inflation.

“We’ve experienced an incredible run in real estate since the market downturn early in the decade and the consumer sentiment continues to show signs of stability,” Hendley concludes. “Like any other industry that ebbs and flows, we will see a slowdown at some point in the future. But the overall outlook is overwhelmingly positive. As long as inventory is scarce, the market should continue on its trajectory.”

While the overall market has cooled, there are more in-market high end buyers than ever before.”

Art in Unexpected Places

With warmer weather comes long, leisurely walks around the neighborhood. And with that, comes a bevy of beautiful public art in Cherry Creek. From Bill Starke’s “Tower of Man” sculpture to Kelsey Montague’s “Wings” on Josephine Street, there’s something beautiful on nearly every block. We especially love the “Mariposa Lily” work by local artist @_growlove_ shown here.

The Windows at Neiman Marcus Marcus. Prada, Gucci, Chanel, Dior…the (designer) gang’s all here. Whether you’re gathering inspiration or shopping for your next investment piece, the retail superstar’s Denver displays are certain to surprise and delight.

THINGS TO LOVE ABOUT CHERRY CREEK IN THE SPRINGTIME

10 6

Trees in Bloom

As magical as the holiday tree lights are, we love the gorgeous reminder of spring that a tree-lined street in full bloom can create. Cherry Creek boasts more than 600 trees in its 16 block radius, just begging for a springtime stroll.

2 3 7

Patio Dining

You’d be hard-pressed to come up with a restaurant in the neighborhood that doesn’t have outside seating. There’s a reason for that. There’s nothing better than a delicious lunch outside while enjoying the comfortable temperatures, bright sunshine, wonderful company, and a well-deserved emergence from a cold and snowy winter. Throw in some epic people watching and, as far as we’re concerned, spring has sprung.

Milwaukee Street Tavern

The NBA and the NHL start to get serious with the upcoming playoffs, so you can expect extended play from the Nuggets and the defending Stanley Cup Champion Avalanche. We also can’t think about spring without thinking of baseball, and a place like Milwaukee Street Tavern is one of those great escapes for sports and suds.

60 SPRING 2023

Dog Bowls

Yet another example of the neighborhood’s renowned hospitality and its never-ending mission to make you comfortable whether you’re of the two-leg or four-legged variety. Dogs are such a special and welcomed sight in Cherry Creek North, and those water-filled dog bowls that you see peppered in front of various stores, restaurants and galleries are a testament to our love for canines.

Street Fashion

Time to shed the warm layers for a wardrobe of vibrant colors, men’s suits, women’s ensembles, eye-catching footwear, and whatever else the dapper and the stylish have in store for the fashion thaw. When every day in Cherry Creek is an impromptu fashion show from sidewalkto-sidewalk, it’s no wonder that there are so many stores and boutiques that cater to looking your best.

rsp i ng

Hats at Mariel

Denise Snyder is Denver’s undisputed curator of millinery, and springtime is when the hat displays at her Cherry Creek North boutique, Mariel, really come to life. Pastels, hot pink, chic black – whatever you fancy, Mariel will help you look equally fancy. Whether you’re headed to a Kentucky Derby soirée, one of the city’s many spring fundraisers, or are simply browsing, Mariel is the go-to for the city’s fashion-forward philanthropists.

Ceviche Classes at Toro

Date nights are exponentially more fun and promising when it’s not 12 degrees outside. Some of the best ceviche anywhere wants to jumpstart spring with classes at Toro Latin Kitchen & Lounge, and then see where the night takes you. People love to gather for food, and this is as unique and entertaining as it gets while setting the table for an evening full of possibilities.

Denver Botanic Gardens

Talk about an unrivaled venue for all things spring. The Denver Botanic Gardens might as well be another planet with its stunning array of plants, trees and foliage, with the grounds drenched in a rainbow palette that screams happiness, beauty, and the best that life has to offer. Raise the Bar

AMERICA’ S COOLEST

It was once a simple spot for an overnight guest to sip a nightcap. An unassuming corner in a lobby, a glorified station with neatly stacked house wines, a forgettable watering hole. But today’s hotel taverns have transcended the ho-hum to become destinations in their own rights. From the classic to the cutting edge, these hotel bars have made names for themselves as epicenters of American cocktail culture.

The Polo Lounge at Beverly Hills Hotel BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA

Synonymous with all that is glamorous, The Polo Lounge has been a favorite amongst the famous and those who wish to be near them for generations. As popular for brunch as it is for booze, Polo’s iconic status has seen many a well-known guest grace its white wrought iron stools – from Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn to modern day movie stars like Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston. In the evenings, patrons are treated to live piano tunes while Sunday brunch boasts its own jazzy musical stylings – along with a side of worldclass stargazing.

J Bar at Hotel Jerome ASPEN, COLORADO

When you’ve been known as Aspen’s favorite watering hole for over a century, it’s safe to say you’re a staple. Ski bums, socialites and celebrities– from members of the Tenth Mountain Division to the late Hunter S. Thompson –have all imbibed at J Bar after a day on the slopes. From the tilework floor to the hints of Chinoiserie, the bar’s interiors brim with the character one would expect from a 126-year-old saloon. Insider’s secret? The hand-carved Chippendale bar has been signed by every bartender who’s worked behind it since 1889.

Thoroughbred Club at the Charleston Place Hotel CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA

It may serve as the lobby bar for the legendary Charleston Place Hotel, yet the Thoroughbred Club is anything but average. Nestled adjacent to the inn’s Georgian staircase and covered in wood paneling as rich as its history, the establishment is known for its afternoon tea service – a classic rite of passage for any Charlestonian. When five o’clock hits, bourbon cocktails abound. Try the Mouzon Mash, an ode to mixologists Mouzon Taylor’s peach farmer grandfather with its whiskey, muddled peaches, mint and lemon. Sip the evening away in Thoroughbred’s roomy banquettes where horseracing memorabilia evokes a decidedly equestrian vibe.

Proof on Main at 21c Museum Hotel

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY

Louisville is synonymous with bourbon, and Proof on Main is perhaps the city’s best spot for an authentic experience, with more than 50 labels available for sipping and sampling. Try one of the joint’s flights or throw back a bourbon mash before it goes off to be barrel aged. There’s also a world-class chef helming the kitchen and art from the museum-centric hotel’s rotating exhibitions adorning the eclectic walls.

Chandelier Bar at the Cosmopolitan

Finding a swanky lounge in Las Vegas is not exactly difficult. But finding one that is built on three tiers and encased in beaded curtains with more than two million crystals is a feat – even by Sin City standards. Chandelier Bar at the Cosmopolitan Hotel is a must for any Vegas trip. Make your way into the exclusive second floor bar where world-class mixologists work their cocktail magic as they serve up tasty libations and even churn Old Fashioneds into adult-friendly sorbet.

Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle

NEW YORK, NEW YORK

Few bars can rival the iconic Bemelmans in terms of an artful and enchanting history. Housed inside the classically cool Carlyle Hotel, Benelmans is best known for the masterpiece murals that adorn its walls, all of which were hand painted by the bar’s namesake artist, Ludwig Bemelman. If his name sounds familiar, it should. Bemelman was the creator and author of Madeline, the children’s book series set inside the Carlyle, as well as a successful cartoonist for The New Yorker, Vogue and Town and Country. The bar itself serves up champagne cocktails via white jacket-clad waiters and, next door at Café Carlyle, Woody Allen plays the clarinet with his New Orleans jazz band every Monday night.

CHANDELIER BAR AT THE COSMOPOLITAN

Ocho Lounge at the Hotel Havana SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

Perched along San Antonio’s famous Riverwalk, Ocho Lounge is fraught with Latin-infused character. Ocho is built on two levels, each with their own distinct vibe. Upstairs at Ocho is built into a glass and steel conservatory, opening up right onto the Riverwalk with both indoor and outdoor seating. Downstairs, a more traditional lounge setting abounds, with dim lighting, velvet couches and leather club chairs. Whichever you fancy, you’ll love the cocktail menu for its reinvented classics. Naturally, the focus is on tequila and Cuban rum. Also try executive chef Juan Bernal’s fare, which is rooted in the hotel’s Pan-Latin cultural influences.

Off the Record at the Hay-Adams

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

This chic little bar in the Hay-Adams hotel is as DC as it gets, and is a favorite amongst Washington powerhouses and aspiring young politicos alike. Either way, the drinks are superb – from a traditional dirty martini to more contemporary sips like the grapefruit muddled mojito. Slip into one of the plush red banquettes and eavesdrop on the capital’s most confidential cocktail chatter. Strictly off the record, of course.

Carousel Bar at the Hotel Monteleone

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA

A longtime NOLA hotspot and the city’s only revolving bar, this 25seat circus-themed merry-go-round, installed in 1949, invites guests to take a spin. Two thousand large steel rollers are pulled by a chain with a one-quarter horsepower motor that results in one revolution every fifteen minutes. Over the years, a carousel top, antiqued mirrors, a pewter bar surface and other details have been added. Two classic libations were created here: the Goody Cocktail, with white and dark rums, orange and pineapple juices, orgeat syrup and lemon-lime soda, and the Vieux Carré, a potent potable named for the French Quarter with rye, cognac, bénédictine, sweet vermouth bitters.

THE JACQUARD

An upscale cocktail menu and wine library with 750 bottles on hand, representing over 100 varietals makes Narrative stand out from the hotel bar pack. The Jacquard emits an aura of sophistication not only to its outof-town guests, but to its neighborhood patrons as well. Veuve by the glass and an incredible happy hour menu make this chic watering hole a favorite.

Kisbee on the Roof

THE JACQUARD

What is it about a rooftop that makes drinking so much more fun? The view? The sunset? Feeling like you’re on top of the world? Add that perfect cocktail, cold beer or glass of wine and life feels pretty darn good. Kisbee on the Roof, perched atop The Jacquard, is where people watching, sky gazing and bartending are the top items on the agenda. We love this posh hot spot for its sweeping 180-degree views of the Rocky Mountains and downtown, and its seasonal curated cocktail menu.

Revived from the ruins of the former Cherry Creek Post Office, B&GC celebrates the cocktail culture of post WW II America with vintage inspired décor and cocktails served the way they should be –thoughtful, tasty and just a bit stiff.

AN INSIDER’S GUIDE TO THE FESTIVAL

@ CHERRYCREEKMAG

Now in its 32nd year, the Cherry Creek Arts Festival is a beloved community tradition. One that’s become an integral part of the city’s cultural fabric with 150,000 visitors enjoying more than 250 of the nation’s top juried visual artists. In just three days, over $4 million in art is sold. We sat down with Cherry Arts PR rep Bryant Palmer to get a true insider’s tips to navigating the culture-rich weekend like a pro.

GET TO KNOW THE ARTISTS BEFORE FESTIVAL WEEKEND.

CherryArts is highlighting every artist attending this year’s festival on their Instagram leading up to the start of the July 1st to 3rd event. Look for their weekly posts that feature sample work and tags of participating artists. Or visit the festival website, where each artist is listed. Pick out a few favorites and then build your visit around finding their booths. Wandering the streets of Cherry Creek North during the festival is fun, but having a destination in mind is, too.

GO VIP.

CCAF offers a limited number of Festival VIP Club badges each year that grant access to the official festival lounge, which includes a lunch buffet, a private bar, and a peaceful, air-conditioned space that’s a perfect respite on warmer festival days, and a great place to run into artists taking a quick break. VIP badges include plenty of other perks too, like free valet parking and an invitation to the artist awards reception.

BE FIRST.

If you’d like the best opportunity to purchase original art before the most popular pieces have been sold, plan on arriving on the first day of the festival — Friday, July 1 — right at 10 a.m., when the festival officially begins.

ROCK ON.

Art is the main draw to CCAF, of course, but there are plenty of live performers to enjoy throughout the weekend, too. One of the best is always the concert for arts education, which this year is on Sunday, July 2, right after the end of the festival. The concert takes place outdoors in Cherry Creek North and proceeds specifically support CherryArts’ year-round programs that bring art experiences to Colorado school kids.

EMBRACE THE NEW.

Last, but not least, don’t miss the emerging artists booths. Each year, CherryArts selects several artists who are early in their careers, or less experienced with large-scale art shows. There’s something special about becoming an early collector of an artists’ work and following their progress over time.

72 SPRING 2023
“There’s something special about becoming an early collector of an artist’s work and following their progress over time.”

BUY SOME ART.

The most important rule for buying art is simple: buy what you love. There’s a good chance that art you purchase at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival will live with you forever, so pay the most attention to how it makes you feel, and whether it’s something you’d love to look at every day.

01. Beyond that, it’s often helpful to set a budget in advance, even a general one, for how much you’re comfortable spending. If you’ve determined that number, you may find it easier to browse with purchasing in mind. If you encounter a piece just outside your budget, it may be worth the splurge. Plenty of collectors out there will tell you that they rarely regret artwork they’ve purchased, but do sometimes regret artwork they didn’t purchase.

02. Remember to talk with artists! One of our favorite parts of the Cherry Creek Arts Festival is how easy it is to meet and interact with the artists who’ve created the pieces we love the most. Ask about their background, their process, what inspired them to make the piece you’re considering. Knowing an artist can help make art you’ve purchased even more meaningful.

03. Sign up for artists’ mailing lists, too. Art collecting can be a lifelong pursuit, so if there’s an artist whose work you appreciate, stay connected with them, even if you’re not making a purchase from them this year.

IF IT’S HAPPENING IN THE CULINARY WORLD, IT’S HAPPENING IN CHERRY CREEK...

Who’s hungry? Maybe a better question is who isn’t hungry? We can always eat. The perfect diet is eating every two hours.

Here in Cherry Creek North and the surrounding area, we find ourselves happily enveloped in a flawless destination for hungry.

Sixty restaurants and cafes pepper this dynamic 16-block district, plus there are another 17 eateries and the like across the street at Cherry Creek Shopping Center. And don’t forget the dozen or so in bordering corridors on East 1st Avenue, East 6th Avenue and the booming and bustling 9th and Colorado (9+CO) neighborhood.

It’s an eater’s paradise in this section of Denver, and it’s an integral part to the reputation as one of the nation’s respected and reputable food cities.

Alex Seidel, a highly-regarded restaurateur, a critically acclaimed chef, and owner of the nearby award-winning Fruition Restaurant shares, “I certainly think that we’re becoming a food destination. Denver is growing. Tastes are growing. It was pretty much a meat and potatoes town when I moved here, but now there’s more of a sophisticated palate and a younger generation of eaters, so a lot has evolved in Denver. As the city becomes more sophisticated, so does the food.”

The award-winning fare from Colorado’s top chefs runs the gamut from just about every corner of the globe. Mexico, China, Italy, Japan, France, Thailand, India, Vietnam, Cuba, Central America, South America and the United States, to name a few, all have a place at the table. So, whether your stomach is rumbling from a local hotel or from a local residence, you’re minutes away from treating your appetite to something special and unforgettable.

Spicy. Sweet. Succulent. Savory. Fast casual. Fine dining. Health conscious. On the go or an hours-long affair. Special occasions. Family. Friends. The big game. Your favorite team. A magical date night.

Breakfasts here are a big deal. Everything you’d expect at your fingertips, but elevated. Restaurant lines are out the door on weekends if you don’t make a reservation beforehand. When people are willing to wait to get in, that’s all you need to know about the quality of cuisine and the experience that diners are left with when they come to Cherry Creek North to start their day. Just like the altitude, the bar is high here.

And where there’s a breakfast, there’s a brunch. Dishes that are so beautiful, they should be classified as an extension of the neighborhood’s magnificent art scene.

And where there’s a brunch, there’s a lunch. Check out our review of the neighborhood’s best sandwiches on page 30. But there’s so much more to lunch menus here. The entire point to this dining hub is to make you want to stay for a while. Escape. Enjoy. Indulge. Lunch time is always an unannounced but understood fashion show with plenty of people watching from inside or from the patios. Cherry Creek knows how to dress, but that’s another article for another time.

And don’t get us started on what dinners mean around these parts.

Steaks. Seafood. Sushi. Pasta. Salads. Tacos. Pizza. Gourmet burgers. Ceviche. Pork. Poultry. If what you’re looking for isn’t here, then it might not exist. We’re flavor country with a great appreciation for organic and gluten-free options from local farms providing the freshest, tastiest and cleanest of eating.

And don’t forget about the sauces. Our dining scene can get a bit saucy with some of the most delicious and mouthwatering creations your taste buds will ever experience.

All of this, and more to come. Restaurants want to be here as much as we food aficionados want them to be here, and some new all-stars will be opening their doors later this year. It’s the place to be. It’s the place to meet. And it’s definitely the place to eat.

TORO LATIN KITCHEN

THE ART OF FINE DINING

Fine dining isn’t hard to locate in these parts. The high demand and the heightened expectations for excellent food in Cherry Creek is just a given, so the neighborhood has been blessed with some fantastic options from chefs who are all about leaving their guests happy and coming back for more. Here are a few of our highly recommended destinations.

BAROLO GRILL

One of the top restaurants anywhere in Colorado. Serving authentic northern Italian food, its award-winning menu covers a lot of ground, but we’re partial to the braised beef short rib, lobster risotto, the Agnolotti alla bolgnese, the cavatelli with rock shrimp, and the fried doughnuts for dessert. And if you love your wine, no one takes their collection more seriously than Barolo Grill. The staff does annual trips to Italy to keep the dining experience inspired and genuine. Seasonally changing menus highlight locally-sourced ingredients from regional farms and artisans at this gift of a dinner destination.

TORO LATIN KITCHEN & LOUNGE

This is one of famed Chef Richard Sandoval’s scrumptious creations, located in Hotel Clio. Start with the best ceviche anywhere as well as those amazingly addictive sweet corn empanadas and settle in for an unforgettable evening. If tequila is your thing then you’re in the right place. Everything from salmon, chicken, steak, burgers and pork chops are highlighted, with our favorite supper selection being the Lomo Saltado, which is a beef filet with creamy jasmine rice, sweet and sour sauce, heirloom tomatoes, bell peppers and red onions. For dessert, go with the La Bomba chocolate sphere filled with cookie crumbles, seasonal berries assorted sorbets & ice cream.

QUALITY ITALIAN

You can’t go wrong here. Located at Halycon, a hotel in Cherry Creek, the mood and vibe are undeniably romantic and cozy with the glow of low dimmed chandeliers, leather booths, and the soft hum of music in the background. And then there’s the menu to fall in love with. Feast on fresh baked monkey bread with garlic salt, filet mignon meatballs, house made ricotta, lobster rigatoni, Brussels Sprouts Calabrese, the chicken parm pizza, and a variety of steaks (the restaurant and interior design are all meant to remind guests of a New York City steakhouse).

LOCAL JONES

Right across the Halcyon lobby from Quality Italian sits the hotel’s signature restaurant in Local Jones. They’ve got it all here – breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner with a range in cuisine that offers something for everyone’s tastes. Blueberry pancakes, avocado toast, and their Denver omelet (when in Rome) are just a few of the stars available for breakfast. Their Proper Club Sandwich for lunch made our best sandwiches list, while soups, salads, cheese and charcuterie boards, grilled lamb skewers, Brussels sprouts, buttermilk ranch fried chicken, braised short ribs, house made bucatini, steak and salmon highlight the dinner menu.

“AS THE CITY BECOMES MORE SOPHISTICATED, SO DOES THE FOOD.”
QUALITY ITALIAN

LOCAL JONES BAROLO GRILL TORO LATIN KITCHEN

KONA GRILL

Where to start? Kona is known as The Big Island, so Kona Grill appropriately enough has a Big Menu covering everything from extensive sushi and seafood offerings, an impressive lineup of steaks, stir fry, Pad Thai noodles, salads, flatbread, and a marvelous happy hour. They do brunch, lunch, and obviously dinner with popular dishes including jalapeno yellowtail sashimi, avocado egg rolls, the surf & turf, macadamia nut chicken, lemon garlic penne and the ribeye meatballs. And if you’re a margarita fan, you’ll love their Margarita Heaven program.

DEL FRISCO’S

GRILLE

Known for their steaks, they should also get credit for the rest of their kitchen creations whether it’s brunch, lunch or dinner. Their Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich for lunch made our best sandwiches list. Meanwhile, dinner here is always a big deal. The cheesesteak egg rolls are phenomenal, and that’s just getting things started. Sticky garlic ribs are another go-to. Flatbreads, crab cakes, ahi tacos, salads and soups pave the way for entrees that boast their signature steaks, pan seared jumbo scallops, a 14-ounce pork chop, lemon dill salmon, and penne a la vodka. And don’t forget GM Gavin Berry’s favorite lemon cake for dessert. Throw in the sidewalk patio or rooftop seating on a gorgeous day or night and you’ll see why this is such a popular spot.

NARRATIVE

The Jacquard Hotel & Rooftop’s signature restaurant has just landed a new executive chef in Jon Keeley, who brings with him some very impressive stops and experience in the restaurant industry. He hails from the 5-Star 5-Diamond Four Season’s Boston and the James Beard Award- winning Toro restaurant in Boston’s South End before helping earn a Michelin star for two consecutive years at Bon Soiree in Chicago. In displaying his elevated farmto-table culinary style, Keeley’s cooking mantra is, “Cook like you’re cooking for your mother on her birthday, and everything will be okay.”

801

CHOPHOUSE

By way of Iowa, this is a heavyweight division steakhouse in our book. Exceptional service. Delicious options whether you go the steak route or not. Located at the valet entrance of the Cherry Creek Shopping Center, this is an automatic good time and a spectacular dining experience. Appetizers that have seduced us include the charred Spanish octopus and roasted marrow bones. The Wagyu Japanese A5 is nothing short of a delicacy and is one of countless cuts that will have you booking your next reservation, while their options from the sea qualify them as a premier fish house in a premier steakhouse’s body.

URBAN EGG

There’s a reason that this breakfast masterpiece is always busy during the week and even more packed on the weekends. The dishes are full of superlatives and wonderful flavors. Our favorites include the corned beef hash, the huevos rancheros, and one of the best sandwiches anywhere (it made our best in Cherry Creek list) with the Urbano, which is a heavenly concoction of a pressed baguette, grilled ham, Swiss cheese, Applewood smoked bacon, dressed greens, tomato, black peppercorn mustard aioli, topped off with an egg your way. The menu has everything you can think of, and everything is perfect here. Great owners. Phenomenal management. Super talented chefs and fabulous service.

BLANCO COCINA + CANTINA

What’s so special about Blanco? Well, they straight up tell you. The laid-back party atmosphere, perfect for sipping the day away serves craveable dishes like cheese crisps (aka Mexican pizza) and the chimichanga – a Sonoran regional staple - with decadent fillings such as short rib machaca and braised chicken. Other show-stealers include tiger shrimp fajitas with spicy garlic butter, and tacos on handmade corn tortillas with slow cooked bbq, roasted corn slaw, pickled onion, and crema fresca. House-made margaritas are squeezed fresh all day long, like the jalapeño and pineapple margarita with chile verde liqueur and habanero bitters or a frozen Paloma with blood orange, grapefruit, and blanco tequila. In a word, BOOM.

You can’t walk a block without a casual dining option. Whether it’s True Food, Fortune Wok to Table, Cherry Cricket, Cucina Colore, Flower Child or Sweetgreen, the choices are endless and delicious. Here are a few of our can’t-miss recommended picks.
BLANCO COCINA + CANTINA CHERRY CRICKET CULINARY DROPOUT URBAN EGG

CULINARY DROPOUT

Right next door to Blanco is a special, out of the ordinary eatery that puts out some really appetizing and tasty plates. Brunch. Lunch. Dinner. Live music. An extensive dining area, a huge bar and outdoor section. Their turkey pastrami made our best sandwiches list, and we’re also big fans of the 36-hour pork ribs, the Gochuhang Brussels sprouts, pork belly nachos, and one of the city’s best desserts with their cinnamon apple brioche and vanilla ice cream known as monkey bread. Other crowd favorites include the pretzel bites and provolone fondue, their famous fried chicken drizzled with honey as well as ice-cold craft beer and an impressive list of house-made cocktails. As they put it, “Culinary Dropout is for anyone who loves damn good food and drinks.”

SNARF’S SANDWICHES

Award-winning gourmet sandwiches galore with the finest ingredients including premium meats and cheeses, crisp veggies, their own blend of giardiniera peppers and homemade, oventoasted bread available in white, wheat or gluten free. This a must-visit. They’ll put their Italian and their pastrami up against anyone’s, and they should. They’ve got shops around Colorado, St. Louis, and Austin, Texas, for a reason. This is not your typical sandwich journey, and their Italian has made our best sandwich list. They also offer fresh salads with homemade soups, kid-sized subs, vegetarian options and desserts.

CHERRY CRICKET

SPIRITS

Like our chefs, the ladies and gentlemen behind the bars of Cherry Creek are some of the best in class. Inspired menus, creative takes, and the latest trends are all part of the Cherry Creek cocktail culture.

“I draw inspiration everywhere from books, culinary dishes, visual art and music to travel and, most especially, from my peers and mentors,” explains Nicole Lebedevitch of Forget Me Not, the trendy cocktail lounge adjacent to The Clayton. “There is always something new to learn or try and master.”

If it’s a traditional cocktail you seek, ask and you shall receive. Bars like Del Frisco’s Grille, Quality Italian, 801 Chophouse, and Elway’s can shake a martini fit for 007 himself, while establishments like Forget Me Not, Local Jones (page 39), Chez Roc, B&GC, and Narrative offer a bevvy of au currant, handcrafted cocktails.

Then, there are the originals. Some call them dives, but we prefer classics. In the heart of Cherry Creek North is Cherry Creek Beer Garden, as well as Milwaukee Street Tavern, the subterranean sports bar that serves up beer and bar food better than anyone. And just on its outskirts are legendary watering holes like Choppers, Bull & Bush, The Bar Cart, and Campus Lounge. Cozy booths, beer on tap, sports on screen and a pool table or two are all at your disposal in Cherry Creek.

FORGET ME NOT

Steeped in comfort and character, Forget Me Not is the perfect place to unwind with friends. Swanky vibes inside, and a gorgeous patio with firepits welcomes quite a scene in Cherry Creek. Snack on a small plate or caviar service. Then try one of their many craft cocktails, or splurge and get one of three shareable drinks ($120) like the Fire Bird – for the table to enjoy.

BULL AND BUSH

A Denver landmark, Bull & Bush celebrates its 52nd anniversary this year. With legendary beer and spirits, great food, good music and a comfortable vibe, the bar has been in the same family for all of its 52 years, and is well into its second generation of ownership. Since the late '90s, Bull & Bush has also been a brewery and is known for its award-winning Impreial Stout.

CHERRY CREEK BEER GARDEN

Located adjacent to The Moxy Hotel, Cherry Creek Beer Garden is a pet-friendly place to drink beer, grab a bite and hang out in the rustically chic outdoor scene featuring multiple seating areas and firepits. The property calls it a destination for “smart people who prefer their craft beer in a can, so each one is cold, crisp and fresh.” We love this summer spot for good beer and even better times.

The Cherry Creek cocktail scene is one to behold. Chic rooftops, swanky lounges, wine bars, speakeasies, and even a dive or two dot the streets of 80206 (see page 67 for our favorite hotel bars in the district). But they all have one thing in common. A spirited (ahem) love for spirits.

Pictured Here: A 1930s advertisement from Hermès, featuring hand illustrations. At the time, the artwork was used to decorate the boutique’s window displays.
