Experience the utmost in luxury and tranquility at Vatulé. Vatulé is situated in La Punta (The Point) on the south side of the St. Regis and Four Seasons Resorts. Inside the gates, guests have full access to two Jack Nicklaus golf courses, a tennis club, a fitness center, the Residents Beach Club, Kapuri Beach Club, and the Seabreeze Beach Club at the St. Regis.

Vatulé overlooks the Pacific Ocean hosting sunset and island views along with the best surf view in all of the Punta Mita development. Vatulé is the only home with visible sunsets every evening of the year and it is elevated over the golf course so it maintains its privacy. Vatulé offers two living and dining rooms, a shaded outdoor living/dining area next to the pool with a wet bar and grill, an office, and two rooftop terraces, all with Pacific views. Vatulé boasts a 72-foot infinity pool and a jacuzzi that seats14 people. It has an expansive 50 yard playing field for lawn games, which overlooks the 17th fairway – Nicklaus’ favorite hole.

Vatulé was designed for outdoor entertaining with 27 outdoor speakers that provide ambient sound throughout the 1.5-acre property via Control 4 operation. Vatulé has plenty of outdoor areas with shade including a daybed palapa and four pool-side 2.5X2.5 meter adjustable umbrellas. WiFi is accessible throughout the property.

can’t think of a year when the holiday season was more needed than this. A time to relax and reflect as we come together with loved ones and cherish our blessings – because even in the face of sorrow and challenges, those blessings still exist. Despite uncharted waters in our world and upheaval in our nation, happiness is all around us – you just need to know where to look.

In this issue, we’re looking to our friends and neighbors to applaud all things Cherry Creek via our first annual Peak of the Creek Awards (page 58). We asked our readers to cast their votes over the past few months and also did a bit of sleuthing ourselves as we picked the best and brightest of 80206.

Dining, shopping, culture, beauty, wellness – it’s all being celebrated throughout this issue. We hope you’ll help us in honoring Cherry Creek’s best – from the mom and pop shops to the exciting new brands that grace our streets – we’re shouting their names from the rooftops.

We’re also finding light and levity in our fashion feature, Back at the Ranch (page 48). We packed up cozy looks from Cherry Creek’s boutiques and headed for the hills where we shot this dreamy editorial on a stunning 6,000 acre Colorado ranch. It was a day filled with friendships, both new and old, plenty of laughs and even a herd of elk as we ventured from one location to the next. We hope it inspires a little mountain getaway of your own this season, as well as an appreciation for the beauty of Colorado - something that we’ve learned can be compromised in the blink of an eye and something that we most certainly should treasure.

Reveling in one of our family’s biggest blessings – the arrival of our second son earlier this year.

Next, we chatted with the powerful non-profits that call Cherry Creek home. In Solid Foundation (page 77), we explore the missions behind these organizations, as well as the incredible good they are doing both in Denver and beyond. It is both encouraging and inspiring to see the impact being made right here in the heart of Cherry Creek each and every day.

FRENCH BLISS After months of waiting, Hermès devotees can officially rejoice. The ultra-luxury design house has once again opened its doors in Denver, this time in an expanded 3,500 square foot space on the top floor of Cherry Creek Shopping Center.

As Hermès’ only standalone address in Colorado, the store marks a significant expansion from its previous incarnation in terms of both scale and collections offered. The space itself is a thoughtful marriage of the natural Colorado landscape and the opulence for which the Parisian brand is known. According to the company, the interior is a streamlined, contemporary evocation of a mountain cabin, where natural materials like lambswool felt and pale oak add warmth and texture. Architecture aside, the fashions available are on point, and range from the beloved Hermès silk scarves and ties, to the coveted enamel jewelry, to an entire salon for women’s ready to wear and shoes.

A clinic just for men has arrived at the corner of Steele Street and 3rd Avenue in Cherry Creek North.

The Medical Man Cave was developed by Dr. Steven Motarjeme, a triple board certified physician with 25 years of experience. The retailer specializing in men’s custom-tailored suits, jackets, tuxedos, shirts, slacks and more, is currently doing one-on-one, appointment only consultations, and offering virtual appointments for clients who don’t feel comfortable with in-person fittings. BALANI offers a truly personalized experience, starting with an appointment with a professional clothier where customers are able to browse the brand’s selection of luxury wool, cashmere and silk fabrics sourced from Italy and the U.K. The BALANI team will then take over 30 measurements to ensure the perfect fit. CYL (Change Your Life) Sauna Studio, also known as The Sweat House, has opened its doors on Third Avenue between Josephine Street and Columbine Street. What’s Cooking Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ is opening their second location in Denver at the base of the Coda residential building at 100 Steele St. in Cherry Creek. With more than 700 locations worldwide since being founded in Yokohama, Japan, in 1997, the restaurant where customers cook over a grill at the center of their table features the likes of filet mignon, pork belly, garlic shrimp, short rib, chicken, assorted veggies, ramen and soups. Its tabletop barbecues have an open mesh grill (unlike the hubcap-style grill found at many Korean restaurants) fired with a gas flame, and downdraft ventilation built into each table so that smoke and fumes are drawn away from diners. The company also provides cooking tips on its menus, so you can quickly become proficient. Gyu-Kaku is slated for a 4,600 square foot space and is expected toIA open sometime in 2021.

How is Toro different than your other restaurants? How is it the same?

The spacious outdoor patio really makes this space unique.

Toro is Latin cooking without borders, as we use ingredients from Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina – a range of South and Central America. And then there are the Asian flavors, some Japanese. I like to blend these flavors to create a nice, warm, eclectic and bold cuisine at Toro. Unique to Toro is the long ceviche bar where guests can sit and view our chefs creating beautiful, fresh ceviche dishes. Since Denver is very health-oriented, our ceviches are very light, but pack a lot of flavor. We offer a variety of dishes at Toro, using locally sourced, fresh ingredients.

If I only get to Toro one time, what must I try?

The cocktail menu focuses on Latin-spirits, including rums, tequilas, mezcals, and cachaças. I would definitely recommend tasting the Mercado Margarita with tanteo habanero tequila, passion fruit, lime, agave nectar and a beautiful hibiscusrosemary foam. Food wise, I would recommend the 14 ounce Sakura Pork Chop from our grill section, the Amarillo Ceviche is stunning, or our Colorado Bison Filet Anticucho, which comes with chimichurri, and a charred corn salad.

Are there any menu items specific to fall and winter that you’re excited about?

Our butcher board is continuously rotating with locally cured meats and cheeses, seasonal jam, artisan honeycomb, pickled veggies and more. Our lunch and dinner menus are seasonal in order to source fresh fish, vegetables, and more.

“They are two of my favorites as I have enjoyed preparing these dishes with my son, who was assisting me in the kitchen at Toro during the opening,” Sandoval smiles.

We’ve personally been to Sandoval establishments in Denver, Scottsdale, Laguna Beach, and Avon, Colorado, so we had to scratch the itch and find out all things Toro with the man behind the plan.

How did your latest restaurant end up in Cherry Creek?

This location happened because of our partnership with DiamondRock Hospitality Company, who owns the JW Marriott Denver Cherry Creek. This is a perfect opportunity to create a restaurant that reflects the area. It’s walkable and features an open air environment, beautiful artwork and a fresh landscape.

The dining scene here boasts plenty of amazing restaurants. The energetic Cherry Creek community is the perfect place to serve unique cuisine. How did the name “Toro” come about?

The restaurant’s name is a nod to Toro’s focus on fusing Latin and Asian cuisines as the word “toro” translates to “bull” in Spanish and “tuna” in Japanese. Throughout the restaurant, guests will find three bull murals by local artist Patrick Kane McGregor.

What are your expectations for Toro? What do you hope diners will associate with it?

I want Toro to serve as a festive, beautiful, expansive space in which to dine and gather. Every seat and every room has a great, energetic view.

What are your favorite dishes to pair with your Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, respectively?

I typically drink the Cabernet with my favorite steak…a bone-in ribeye. My friend, Craig Andrisen, is my Pinot Noir connoisseur, so he tells me (and everyone else) what goes with Pinot. In my case, he tells me that I like it with pasta and red sauce, and I tend to agree with him. As for the Chardonnay, I’m trying to eat more fish now, so I enjoy them together. Like many people, I do like the Chardonnay chilled on a warm day because it’s crisp and refreshing.

Stanford holds a special place in your heart. Was it a no brainer to create a collection of wine with The Farm that pays homage to your college days?

Stanford was an instrumental piece of my formative years.

The friendships I made there, and the experiences I had there, are irreplaceable. So, when we discussed our first collection outside the Elway Reserve, it was the first thought that came to mind. I believe the wines are as special as the place itself.

Have you ever thought about the parallels between football and wine? The patience, the focus, and the hard work required that leads to a great glass of wine or a big win on Sunday against the Raiders?

Whatever the event, one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever walk the planet has plenty of reasons to celebrate and just as many options, but his favorite target of late is his wine. We uncorked a bottle with this living legend and got down to business about all aspects of his business, including 7Cellars’ newest release, The Farm Collection.

Why wine? Why not whiskey or tequila?

Wine is something that is closely tied to food, more than any spirit. With the success of my restaurants, I thought the two blended together nicely. Additionally, my children were drinking more wine as they got older, and it was a great conduit for us to connect and communicate.

You’re a perfectionist. A competitor. What measures did you take to ensure that 7Cellars, and of course The Farm Collection, was in keeping with your reputation and career path?

That’s true. If I’m going to associate my family name with a brand or a company, then I do want it to be a positive association, and of the highest quality. We ensured this by initially connecting with a great wine maker in Rob Mondavi, Jr. His history, knowledge and reputation in wine was unparalleled.

How did a meeting and eventual partnership play out with Rob Mondavi, Jr.?

It was facilitated by our partner, OneHope wines. Rob listened to our vision of what we wanted to create. Similarly, we respected his story and values and ultimately what he represents. It has been a great partnership.

I’m not sure that I drew that exact parallel, but there’s no question that there are similarities in their respective processes. For instance, both football and wine are methodical, time-consuming processes. The Broncos don’t just show up on Sundays and win games, no more than the wine just shows up on your table and tastes great. The steps necessary to be great in each are mired in many details.

Both have numerous people behind the scenes who impact their success. Both face unaccounted obstacles throughout.

And finally, both are helped by a little good fortune along the way.

TONY JORDAN STATE & LIBERTY When State & Liberty opened on Fillmore Street late last year, it didn’t just bring unrivaled bespoke fashions to Denver’s men with athletic builds, it also brought a manager to Cherry Creek in Tony Jordan. Jordan’s style, substance and strut were way too much for us to overlook, so we sat down with the Chicago native to learn about his favorite spots in Cherry Creek, his passion for fashion and whom you could expect to see at his ultimate dinner party.

What have you learned so far about the Cherry Creek neighborhood?

It’s a vibrant area with folks who understand how to live life well. I’ve never seen more Olympic-ready octogenarians in one place in my life!

What kind of clientele are you encountering and what kind of fashion and style are they gravitating to?

At State & Liberty, we cater to the man whose lifestyle supports staying in top physical shape. That guy wants to feel as good as he looks. It’s what allows him to be successful! We source beautiful fabrics from Europe and Asia to create clothing that has the specific fit usually only reserved for custom tailored clothing.

Favorite neighborhood haunts?

Aviano Coffee, Sol and Quality Italian are my go-to’s. Elevated at the top of the Halcyon was fun on summer nights. Although I wear mostly State & Liberty gear, I grew up on luxury clothing. Hermès, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom are always there for my essentials.

Best dressed celebrity, present?

Pierce Brosnan. It’s like he only picks roles where he knows he’ll be dressed in the best clothing!

Best dressed celebrity, past?

George Hamilton. Just like the famous Rat Pack, dressing like a gentleman in the best menswear says a lot about you.

What is your earliest men’s fashion inspiration?

When I was 12-years-old, my dad gave me my first stack of GQ and Esquire magazines. He also taught me how to care for my clothes and shoes. I knew about fine wool and leathers from Italy and Spain before I was 14, thanks to him.

How did your passion begin?

As a teenage athlete, I was asked to model in runway shows sponsored by luxury department stores and boutiques. When I turned 16, one of those shops hired me and taught me how to sell Armani, Zegna and Canali. It has never stopped.

What looks are you particularly excited about for fall and winter?

Well-made turtleneck sweaters and breathable layered clothing.

Topcoats made in performance cloth that keep you both warm and dry. Lace-up dress boots with Vibram soles.

Three must-have items that every man should have in his closet?

A great fall and winter topcoat is key. A navy blazer is more important than a suit. Last, but not least, cognac tan or brown leather dress loafers. The most versatile shoe you’ll ever wear.

What an awesome question! I recently watched a documentary on Alexander McQueen and find both him and his fashion fascinating. Mother Theresa because I feel that she would leave you both inspired and consoled. Victoria Beckham because I think she is the epitome of “cool” and I absolutely love her sophisticated style.

JFK, Jr. because he’s so dreamy and would be fun to look at. And Lady Gaga because I want to be her best friend, I think she would be a blast to hang out with.

What made you open Denver Darling?

My business partner, Abby Miller, and I always discussed opening a store together.

After having lunch in Cherry Creek one day, we stumbled across the adorable house that is now our store. We knew we had to jump on the opportunity. Within a month we signed a lease and were on a flight to Dallas to attend our first market.

Favorite lines you carry at Denver Darling?

From the beginning we have carried Commando and our faux leather leggings are one thing we can’t keep in stock. They are flattering on everyone! Unpublished is the main denim line we carry now and I’m a sucker for a great fitting jean that doesn’t cost a fortune. And English Factory because it has that feminine touch that lots of other boutiques don’t carry. Draper James (Reese Witherspoon’s cute southern line) and 525 America are also two favorites!

Favorite way to relax on a weekend?

I love cuddling up in a faux fur blanket, eating ice cream, and watching mindless TV shows. It’s my way to recharge for the week ahead.

Items you are coveting for fall/winter?

We are all about the loungewear right now. I can’t get enough of the cozy joggers and cropped pullovers.

I’m also on the hunt for a chic trench to cleverly hide my loungewear and a stylish pair of sneakers as I’m finding myself wearing more flats than heels these days.

What is your favorite thing about Cherry Creek?

I am fortunate enough to live in Cherry Creek North so I love the accessibility of it. I can walk to work, brunch with my girlfriends, my favorite stores...you name it. Owning a store in the neighborhood has also expanded my appreciation for the community. For me, it’s the best neighborhood to live and work in.

Favorite Cherry Creek restaurant?

Cherry Creek Grill because it is consistently delicious and you can’t beat the Macho Salad. The wine list is also amazing.

Describe your personal style.

Very classic. I am a huge fan of a great staple piece that can last for years. I tend to gravitate towards clean, tailored looks.

My style, as well as Denver Darling Boutique’s, is feminine with an east coast flair.

Who is your style icon?

I have two. As a little girl, I would regularly go to the library and pull every book I could find with photos of Jackie O as I loved her timeless, effortlessly chic look. I was obsessed with everything she wore from her gowns to her Cape Cod ensembles.

My mom had a very similar polished, elegant look which I loved. She was always more dressed up than down. You would never find her on an airplane in jeans.

Most beautiful place you’ve visited in Colorado? In the world?

I absolutely love Telluride, I think it’s the prettiest part of Colorado. In the world....I was lucky enough to travel to the Amalfi coast with my family a couple of years ago.

I was having lunch in Portofino, looked around and was literally in awe. I felt like I was in a painting. There’s a certain magic there that’s indescribable.

Do you “collect” anything?

Hotel key cards. Many of them have photos of the hotel or of the city where you are and they are a great memory for me of my travels!

Situated on 2.5 acres facing the iconic Cherry Hills Country Club, this custom home designed by Semple Brown Architects of Denver is one of only 28 homes adjacent to the course. The sellers traveled to the Hill Country of Texas for architectural inspiration and translated their discoveries into the design of the home. For a fashionable Cherry Creek couple, city living was the answer to their urbane, on-the-go lifestyle. And while they loved the luxury finishes, opulent amenities and incredible convenience of their new building in the heart of the neighborhood, they wanted to put their own stamp on the place they’d call home. With that, the homeowners enlisted designer Shannon McElroy of Carla’s, A Classic Design, to create a space with plenty of personality and sophisticated charm.

in nearly every space. However, instead of blanketing entire rooms in wallpaper, McElroy and her team created accent walls using bold graphics in neutral colors. This helped each area achieve a sense of individuality without making them busy or overdone. In particular, she cites the dining room as a stand out moment. “It is definitely my favorite room in the home. We fell in the love with the wallpaper, which has a bold, large pattern so, in return, we kept everything else very simple while still adhering to our credo of high style,” she says.

“The home was beautiful, but very homogenous and simple.

We gave it character through modern, glamorous touches in both the furnishings and accessories,” McElroy explains.

“Simple lines and a consistent color palette worked to make the already open floor plan even more cohesive from room to room.” Indeed, the penthouse residence, which is more than 3,000-sqaure feet, is overflowing with thoughtful touches and high-design elements.

The entire home boasts wide plank hardwood floors and natural stone appointments that exude luxury, as does the expansive outdoor living space and sweeping views. On the large patio that overlooks bustling Cherry Creek North, a black and white palette was used on sleek, modern sofas and a geometric coffee table. Accent chairs in a complementary geometric pattern mimicked the table’s silhouette while also offering comfortable seating for al fresco entertaining.

Nearby, the contemporary kitchen is simple yet sophisticated, with custom bar stools in a playful pattern that ties in the turquoise used in the main living space. Lacquered bedside tables, a wallpapered accent wall and a modern crystal chandelier evoke a strong sense of old Hollywood glamour. Yet the crowning jewel of the master suite is undoubtedly the overthe-top boutique style closet.

Another stand out space? For McElroy, it is the home office – a room that’s more relevant than ever. “I love the office. It has great style but remains incredibly masculine,” she reveals.

A Classic Design A family business that’s helping you love where you live

The history of Carla’s A Classic Design is actually a “her-story.” The story of Carla McElroy. It begins a number of years ago in Dallas, Texas—when Carla was a young wife, mother and commercial designer.

In spite of her significant career successes, she felt long work-hours pulling her away from her family.

Carla longed to combine the loves of her life (interior design and the raising of her family) so she opened A Classic Design in the garage studio of their home, where she was able to design for her customers while caring for her children. Her tasteful design sense and passion for exceeding the customer’s expectations built her little shop into a highly successful business.

Soon, her husband was transferred from Dallas to Denver, and Carla began her business all over again – this time in Colorado. In 2002, Carla opened her first retail storefront, and by 2010 she made the move to a lavishly loaded, 6,000 square foot showroom at The Streets at Southglenn, also slightly changing the company’s name to Carla’s A Classic Design.

Today, as she slowly steps back, the business is helmed not only by Carla herself, but also the very family that inspired her to start the business years ago. Her daughter, Michelle, serves as designer and marketing director. Her son, Wes, spearheads the inventory and delivery department. His wife, Shannon, is a designer and Carla’s sister, Kelly, is also a designer. A family owned business in every sense, Carla even built a nursery and playroom in the back for her grandchildren. “Many of our customers have watched my grandchildren grow up at the store,” Carla says with a smile.

The corner of Detroit Street and Second Avenue is always bustling with the health-conscious dining crowd that makes Colorado one of the premier demographics anywhere in the world.

As for the salad itself, we kind of love them all The Organic Tuscan Kale Salad, Chopped Salad and the Seasonal Ingredient Salad (along with some added protein) are favorites. Regardless of your choice, True Food is always looking out for both your tastebuds and your health.

Come for the coffee. Stay for the avocado toast, smoothies and breakfast burrito. Our favorite cup of Joe is pressed at St. Paul Street and Second Avenue between Hapa Sushi and Rise Nation with an accompanying menu that makes breakfast, brunch or lunch a no-brainer. And while it’s not a coffee house per se, we’ll put their brew up against anyone’s on the block.

The hotel’s signature piece is an oversized mixed media painting by Los Angeles street artist Hijack, but we love the hotel’s elevator cabs best. Featuring immersive photographic installations inspired by whiskey from Denver artist Paul Bokering, the art is unexpected both in medium and in placement, perfectly encapsulating the property’s entire vibe.

The Jacquard Hotel & Rooftop

The art at The Jacquard, all of which was curated by Nine dot Arts (Halcyon, Moxy) is intended to reflect the collection of a world traveler. One of the marquee pieces in the collection, which is visible from the street, is a 16-foot suspended neon sculpture with an LED component by Denver-based artist Scott Young. The color-changing sculpture titled I Have Seen Things You Would Never Believe extends from the ceiling of the hotel’s second floor. Our favorite, however, is BB by Patrick Kane McGregor. The a larger than life, handpainted homage to French actress and fashion icon Brigitte Bardot greets hotel guests upon entering the porte cochere.

Owned and curated by man about town Aaron LaPedis, Fascination Street has been a favorite amongst Denver gallery-goers for more than 30 years. A seasoned author, television host and art aficionado, LaPedis’ gallery features original paintings, sculpture and limited edition artwork by the finest regional, national and international artists.

Now in its 30th year (which for the first time since its inception was cancelled in 2020), the Cherry Creek Arts Festival is considered the crème de la crème of public art events.. For three days in early July (typically 4th of July weekend), art lovers come out in droves to peruse and purchase pieces from more than 200 artists.

We admit to being beyond curious about the soon to open Clayton Hotel and Members Club.

And while we’ll have to wait until March for the property’s official reveal, The Clayton gave us an artistic taste of what’s to come in August via its unique collaboration with eight local pop and graffiti artists. The result is an impressive large scale installation of 14X6 feet pieces at The Clayton’s Cherry Creek North construction site. The artwork, which benefited local nonprofit Birdseed Collective, will eventually be auctioned off at the Clayton Founding Member’s party. In the meantime, it’s a welcomed, colorful addition to the street.

About 10 years ago, a very hot brand at the time had announced some limitededition pieces. One of them was a platinum version whereby they were only making 50. Because of the history we’d had with the brand, I was one of only two retailers in America to be allocated a piece. I offered it to a very good local client who gave me a $10,000 deposit. It retailed for around $80,000.

Shortly thereafter, a customer from Marabella, Spain, found out about the piece and contacted me, desperate to acquire it. I explained that it was already sold and he said, ‘There’s got to be a way to buy it from the guy.’ So, I contacted my client and asked, ‘How would you like to double your money?’ He said that would work for him, so I told the new buyer from Spain that he’d have to pay $20,000 over the original asking price.

It all worked out and we moved on. My customer from Spain was thrilled to add this to his collection.

Soon after, I attended the Geneva show where all the new products are launched.

The global CEO for the watch company came up to me and said, ‘I have a problem.

I need that watch back that you were allocated.’ I said, ‘I can’t. I’ve already sold

it twice.’ He said, ‘I have an ultra, mega, high profile VIP customer who wants this watch and you’re one of the only people in the world who has one. Figure it out and find a way.’

I don’t know who the interested buyer was, but I’ve heard rumors that it was F1 racing legend Michael Schumacher.

I contacted my buyer in Spain and told the chap, ‘I’ve got a problem. The CEO of the company has personally asked me to reach out to you and see if there’s any way we can talk you out of this piece.’

He said ‘No’ and that he really wanted it. I told him to tell me what his wish list would be. A day later, he told me he’d be willing to walk away from this piece if I got him three rare, special pieces – a ‘holy grail’ collection, if you will. The CEO said he could get those pieces for my Spain client.

I sold the watch three times, and yet I never saw it. In fact, to this day I still have not seen that watch.

We buy watches all the time. Someone had brought in a Breitling. We bought it and thought nothing of it, putting it away for 30 days as the state of Colorado requires. A month later, we took a closer look at it and saw that there was an engraving on the back of the watch that read Harry B. Combs. I also saw that the dial had the Rolls Royce logo on it, which is very unusual. You see Breitlings with Bentley logos, but I’ve never seen a Breitling with a Rolls Royce logo.

We started to do some research and it turns out that Harry B. Combs was a very well known, highly regarded aviation and aerospace pioneer. He was instrumental in creating flight schools before and during World War II, and worked with the FAA to create a bunch of rules and regulations that are still in place. He was the Chairman and CEO for Learjet for a number of years and he was the senior advisor nominated by JFK to work closely with NASA prior to the moon missions. He was also a close friend to astronaut and senator John Glenn, and was nominated into the Aerospace Hall of Fame in 2003, which was when he was presented with this watch.

This watch, unbeknownst to us at the time, has this amazing story.

We recently sold the piece to someone who very much appreciated both the watch for what it is as well as for the unique story behind it.

Who brought the watch to us? I don’t think it was from a family member of Combs because the seller had received it 16 years ago from his girlfriend at the time. How she got it, I have no idea.

Low and behold, we noticed it from a humble little inscription on the back edge. It just goes to show that you never know what you might uncover by doing a little homework on a watch.

watch stories, taking pictures in different scenarios and asking each other what watch everyone is wearing that day. They are all over the world talking about watches.

A big-name person behind the scenes in the entertainment industry – not an actor or a director – but a big mover and shaker, had just started having a love for watches. I met him in the store and his first purchase was a very typical first purchase – a stainless steel Rolex. From that one purchase, it has almost been a twice-a-month process of him discovering new watches, deciding what he wants to buy and coming in to get it. Cherry Creek is an epicenter for progress in Colorado. From its rapidly changing retail landscape, to the addition of four new hotels in the last decade alone, to luxury residences on almost every block, the neighborhood is perhaps the most ever-evolving and arguably most relevant in Colorado’s robust business community.

What many don’t realize, however, is that Cherry Creek is an incredible powerhouse in the state’s nonprofit community as well. Five of Colorado’s largest family foundations call Cherry Creek home. Join us as we explore the names behind the hundreds of millions of dollars in grants made to Colorado’s nonprofit organizations each year, all from the confines of 80206.

Adolph Coors Foundation Est. 1976

H

aving awarded an impressive 6,800 grants totaling $274 million since its 1976 inception, the Adolph Coors Foundation supports organizations that promote the western values one might associate with a Colorado-bred, multigenerational brand like Coors. Namely, self-reliance, personal responsibility and integrity. This was the vision of founding donors Joe and Bill Coors four decades ago, and it continues today with three generations of the Coors family sitting on the board of trustees.

Ultimately, the foundation aims to fund causes that encourage the same entrepreneurial spirit upon which the Coors family’s success was built. “What really sets Colorado apart is the independent spirit and generosity of our citizens. It remains a land of opportunity for those who want to roll up their sleeves and work for it,” the foundation says. “This way of life made it possible for the Coors Family to participate in the American dream for more than 100 years, and we want to make sure this country remains the land of opportunity for others, too.”

As such, the foundation places a high priority on programs that encourage self-reliance. From helping youth to prosper, to encouraging economic opportunities, the Adolph Coors Foundation places a premium on entrepreneurship.

According to the foundation, traditional areas of support include one-to-one mentoring programs for youth, paid on-the-job training, and a variety of self-help initiatives. The foundation also has an interest bringing integrative medicine into the medical mainstream, an initiative brought to life by a

$10 million donation from Bill and Rita Coors in 2011 and one inspired by Bill’s longtime passion for and belief in wellness, the mind-body connection and alternative medicine. In each of its giving areas, the foundation seeks evidenced-based results.

Over the years, this mission has translated into a monumental impact on organizations like Junior Achievement, Boy Scouts of America, Save our Youth and Children’s Hospital as well as a number of integrative medicine projects at leading facilities like University of Arizona.

In 2014, the foundation built and moved into its new, permanent headquarters at 215 St. Paul Street in Cherry Creek North, where it continues to thrive year after year.

In 2019, the Adolph Coors Foundation awarded 114 grants totaling $8.88 million.

Merle Chambers Fund Est. 1997

M

erle Chambers has long been an advocate for social justice. From the time she was a student protester at Cal Berkeley during the civil rights and free speech movements of the late 1960s, to her days as one of the first female CEOs in the oil and gas industry, Chambers has been a trailblazer for equality. Recognized for her vast accomplishments in oil and gas exploration and production, Chambers undoubtedly pioneered women’s leadership in the historically maledominated field. In fact, Chambers has been inducted into the Rocky Mountain Oil and Gas Hall of Fame, Colorado Business Hall of Fame, and Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame. After selling Axem Resources, the highly successful oil and gas company she built from the ground up, it was only natural that she set her sights on philanthropy. In 1997, she founded the Cherry Creek-based Merle Chambers Fund (formerly the Chambers Family Fund) with a commitment to long-term economic opportunity for women, and social justice.

Today, the foundation has a clear mission – to increase access to opportunities that improve the chances for success and quality of life for those who are most impacted by economic, social and political injustice. In short, the foundation supports causes that work to achieve social justice and women’s economic security. And by providing grants to organizations like Colorado Children’s Campaign, Bell Policy Center, Rose Community Foundation, Clayton Early Learning, Parent Possible and the Women’s Foundation of Colorado, the Merle Chambers Fund does exactly that.

Yet the fund does not accept grant submissions. Instead, they research and identify organizations and projects that are well-positioned to advance social justice and women’s economic security. “We believe that systems and policy change will positively impact nonprofits that provide direct services,” they explain. “With limited resources, we focus our grantmaking on policy, advocacy and systems change.”

In 2019 alone, the foundation awarded more than $1.2 million in grants to nonprofits seeking upstream solutions and impactful change, almost all of which were in Colorado.

Global Down Syndrome Foundation Est. 2009

W

hen John and Anna Sie’s first grandchild, Sophia Kay Whitten, was born with Down syndrome, life took on new meaning. Although they were retired, the Sies tackled Down syndrome and its associated issues with the same unrelenting passion that fueled their earlier business endeavors in the telecommunications and entertainment industries. Under the astute leadership of their daughter and Sophia’s mother, Michelle Sie Whitten, The Global Down Syndrome Foundation (GLOBAL) was established.

Their first order of business was addressing the gross inequities they uncovered during Michelle’s pregnancy.

Namely, that there was very little in the way of research, medical best practices or what was possible over the next horizon for their granddaughter, and more importantly, that only 0.0006% of the National Institute of Health’s then staggering $31 billion annual budget went to research for people with Down syndrome. Shocked and determined to create change, the Sies went to work to ensure Sophia and the six million people like her were afforded the best quality of life possible. Since then, GLOBAL’s advocacy and lobbying in D.C. has resulted in a tripling of the National Institutes of Health Down syndrome research budget, from $27M in FY2016 to an estimated $113M in FY2020.

Today, GLOBAL, which is headquartered in the heart of Cherry Creek at Second and Adams, is the largest non-profit in the U.S. working to save lives and dramatically improve health outcomes for people with Down syndrome. GLOBAL has donated more than $32 million to establish the Linda Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome at Anschutz Medical Campus, the first Down syndrome research institute supporting over 200 scientists and over 2,000 patients with Down syndrome from 28 states and 10 countries. Working closely with Congress and the National Institutes of Health, GLOBAL is the lead advocacy organization in the U.S. for Down syndrome research and care. GLOBAL has a membership of over 118 Down syndrome organizations worldwide, and is part of a network of affiliates – the Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome, the Sie Center for Down Syndrome at Children’s Hospital of Colorado, and the University of Colorado Alzheimer’s and Cognition Center – all on the Anschutz Medical Campus.

Coloradoans might be most familiar with GLOBAL for its highly-publicized annual fundraiser, the Be Beautiful Be Yourself Fashion Show, with this year’s event taking place virtually on November 14th. Athletes and celebrities flock to Denver in support of the organization, with the likes of music legend Quincy Jones, Caterina Scorsone, Marian Avila, John C. McGinley, Matt Dillon, Kevin Dillon, Zack Gottsagen, Eric Dane, Amanda Booth, Beverly Johnson,

Denver Broncos Von Miller, Brandon McManus, Justin Simmons, Phillip Lindsay, and Jake Butt, Colorado Rapids Kellyn Acosta, Kyra Phillips and John Roberts and others making a red carpet appearance in the mile high city. The event has become the singlelargest Down syndrome fundraiser in the world since its 2009 inception.

And while true, the twist of fate that came in the form of Sophia Whitten 17 years ago was life-changing, for Michelle Sie Whitten and her husband, Tom, it has been an incredible blessing. “I come from a somewhat over-achieving family.

I don’t know for sure but I believe that if my daughter had been born typically, I might have put her and her younger brother on a similar track: focusing more on achievement than quality of life,” she shares. “I honestly believe that having a child who is differently-abled has made me an infinitely better parent – one who is clued into my child’s needs, strengths, motivators, and self-esteem. I enjoy every minute with both of my children! And now I really have patience for all children. What an amazing gift.”

Walton Family Foundation Est. 1987

W

hile most would associate the Walton family with their hometown of Benton, Arkansas, there’s a strong Denver connection as well. Several branches of the Walton family tree reside in Colorado including professional sports moguls Ann Walton Kroenke and Stan Kroenke. It makes perfect sense, then, that Cherry Creek would lay claim to being one of several home bases for the Walton Family Foundation.

Established by Wal-Mart founders Sam and Helen Walton in 1987, the foundation has gone from awarding just shy of $1.5 million each year in the late 1980s to $525 million annually in 2019. The focus of the foundation’s efforts largely fund K-12 educational initiatives and environmental causes as they relate to rivers and oceans.

Locally, the Walton Family Foundation funds such causes as the Denver Foundation, Colorado Succeeds, Colorado League of Charter Schools, Colorado Nonprofit Development Center, and Urban League of Metro Denver among countless others.

Family meetings that once took place in Sam and Helen’s living room now occur in the offices of the Walton Family Foundation, where a Board of Directors comprised entirely of family members still drive the organization’s focused approach to philanthropy.

“The Walton Family Foundation is, at its core, a family-led foundation,” the organization explains.

“Three generations of the descendants of our founders, Sam and Helen Walton, and their spouses, work together to lead the foundation and create access to opportunity for people and communities.”

With a belief that the best ideas can come from anywhere, the foundation maintains that it is open to new thinking from all over. “We partner with those who are closest to the problem because they’re usually closest to the solution.”

“When I was growing up, Denver was a very small town. A handful of men made all of the decisions, and a handful of families gave all of the money. It worked back then. But it doesn’t work that way now.” Marne Davis Kellogg ought to know. Born and raised in Denver, she grew up along the stately streets of Denver’s Country Club enclave where she knew everyone, and everyone knew her. True westerners, the Davis family arrived in Colorado in the 1860s and have been consistently active in Denver’s business and philanthropic communities since. In fact, Marne watched the Cherry Creek we know today unfold before her eyes. “When I was a girl, I walked to Kindergarten at the Bromwell School, only the neighborhood looked nothing like it does now,” she laughs. Fast forward to 2020, and Marne is the President of The Kellogg Organization, Inc., the management consulting and fundraising firm she helms with her husband, Peter. It’s a natural fit for the couple, who met when Peter was the Executive Director of the Central City Opera

and Marne was the Communications Director for DCPA. By 1981, they had formed their firm, which today serves clients locally, nationally and even internationally, helping to transform organizations like Rocky Mountain Public Media, African Wildlife Foundation, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and Denver Rescue Mission.

And while today, Marne Davis Kellogg is deeply ensconced in the nonprofit world, she’s had more than one calling over the years.

After graduating from Denver’s Kent School (then called the Kent School for Girls) Marne attended a finishing school in Paris before briefly studying sculpture at the University of Rome. From there, she became a Military Airlift Command flight attendant, serving on troop transports to Vietnam under the auspices of Braniff International in 1966. ill Daniels was a pioneer. And while yes, his connection to the University of Denver would make that statement true in and of itself, Daniels was a pioneer in a more literal sense, too. The well-known Colorado businessman was a visionary. A risk taker. A trailblazer. And most certainly a pioneer.

A legendary cable television entrepreneur and philanthropist, Daniels was born in Greeley during the Great Depression and raised in New Mexico. After returning from the Navy, he was introduced to television for the first time and was fascinated. Soon, he’d learn that it was scarcely available, if at all, in America’s small towns. With that, Daniels began building his first cable television system in Casper, Wyoming, which launched in 1954. Bill Daniels would go on to become a tour de force in the cable industry, and would be celebrated not only for his business acumen but also his strong ethics. He owned the American Basketball Association’s Utah Stars, launched one of the first regional sports networks, and became an owner of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Yet for all of his success in business, Bill Daniels was just as recognized for his generosity and compassion. Throughout his life, he made large philanthropic gifts, such as large donations to the University of Denver to incorporate ethics into its business school curriculum (now known as the Daniels College of Business), and launching Young Americans Bank to help children learn financial literacy. On a more personal level, he

Concert Hall and the construction of the Theatre Complex, and a stint as the Rocky Mountain Bureau Chief for People magazine, and Marne Davis Kellogg’s career path is most certainly storied.

If her name sounds familiar, it should. In addition to her nearly 40 year tenure with The Kellogg Organization, Marne Davis Kellogg is also an international best-selling author. From 1996-2007, she penned 11 mystery novels. Which meant a typical day for Marne was anything but typical. “When you write a mystery novel, everything has to work. The story has to be completely authentic, and so your research has to be meticulous,” she explains. For Marne, whose earlier stories followed a US Marshall in Wyoming, that research was oftentimes grisly. “I was spending my days at crime scenes, autopsies and exhumations in order to fully grasp the intricacies behind the stories I was writing – which typically

was known to leave anonymous envelopes of cash in mailboxes for people he read about in the newspaper that were down on their luck.

Bill Daniels spent the last few years of his life planning the Daniels Fund, and when he passed away on March 7, 2000, his $1.1 billion estate transferred to the foundation, which began making grants and scholarships that year. Bill identified funding areas that were important to him based on his personal experiences including Aging, Amateur Sports, Disabilities, Drug & Alcohol Addiction, Early Childhood Education, Ethics, Homeless & Disadvantaged, K-12 Education, and Youth Development, and scholarships for deserving students.

From its inception in 2000 through the end of 2019, the Daniels Fund distributed $877.2 million in grants and scholarships. That includes support of 2,814 nonprofit organizations with $654.8 million in grants. During that time, the Daniels Fund has also paid $204.6 million in scholarships for 4,149 Daniels Scholars, and an additional $17.8 million in scholarship grants for non-traditional students through the Boundless Opportunity Scholarship Program.

“Bill once said if you spent your life helping others and were remembered as an honest person, you would leave this world with a clear conscience and a smile on your face,” said Hank Brown, Interim President & CEO of the Daniels Fund.

“I would like to think that Bill would be smiling today to see the meaningful legacy he left in his community.”

“September 11th had a huge impact on me.

After that, I needed a break from such heavy subject matter,” Marne explains. With that, Kick Keswick was born, marking Marne’s most beloved character and an ensuing five book series. A jewel thief from Provence working at a London auction house, creating the Keswick persona saw Marne spending her days at the Sotheby’s magnificent jewels auctions and on the floor of New York City’s finest jewelry stores as opposed to the city morgue – a welcomed diversion. “I wanted to write about beauty. And while grand theft is still a crime, no one was killed in the Kick Keswick books,” she laughs. Those very books became a touchstone for readers

– a distraction that proved instrumental through trying times. “The most rewarding thing about writing was the letters I received from readers – cancer patients to Katrina victims – who said that my books helped carry them through. There’s something about a jewel thief that creates a sense of escape and being able to do that for these individuals was incredibly humbling.”

It’s that feeling of making a real impact – in changing someone’s life – that remains Marne Davis Kellogg’s driving force.

Whether that impact comes from writing or from her work in philanthropy, the sentiment remains the same. “The work we are doing is important. It is transforming lives. There’s nothing more satisfying than that.”
