hen a sudden change left me searching for a new home in Second Life, I found myself embarking on a grid-wide hunt to find a place that actually suited my needs. PROBING THE UNDERBELLY OF A DIGITAL REALM Coco St. George

Y

ou’re just minding your own business, and suddenly a perfect stranger asks you a very intimate question. How do you react? If you are like most people, you would probably ignore that impertinent person and keep doing whatever you were doing. But if you happen to be in Second

to avoid. That shouldn’t come as a surprise: social media has elevated the use of euphemisms to a new level, almost creating a whole new language aimed at avoiding hurting anybody’s feelings—or tickling a too-sensitive area. We, of course, won’t hesitate to call things by their right names. No, sir, we won’t mince words when discussing the most thorny or risqué topics. We won’t waste time sugarcoating the gritty and crude realities of our world. And if someone asks about our deepest desires, our darkest fantasies, or our wildest dreams, we will answer in full detail. After all, we’ve all been there, right? If only out of curiosity, maybe just to have a quick peek. Or maybe we only wanted to understand what everybody else was talking about.

Life, chances are that you not only will understand why they are asking you that question, but also take the time to elaborate a reasonable and thoughtful answer. This is where I’m supposed to insert an NSFW warning. Be aware that we’re going to visit places whose names are pronounced only in whispers, lest the well-behaved crowd shush us. It’s not that those are secret places nobody has heard about. On the contrary, they are some of the most frequented and crowded places in Second Life with visitor counts reaching into the hundreds of thousands. Why shouldn’t we talk about them? People may have qualms when it comes to discussing private matters, intimate questions, if you will. That’s why you may see influencers on YouTube and TikTok talking about “s*x,” “seggs,” or any other euphemism for the word they’re trying AFTER HOURS

And so, we roamed beaches, forests, and caves; we tried out the furniture in stores, even when we had no intention of buying that appealing sofa, with dozens of options and even more poses. We still remember the signs posted on the walls, inviting visitors to try the beds, provided they kept their clothes on. O tempora, o mores! The more enterprising people will even create alts to visit such places without compromising their reputations in the very probable case they bump into an acquaintance. Because, of course, our friends are doing the same! Creating an alt just to have a “quick peek” at the underbelly of our digital world may sound like overkill. But we need to consider that after signing up for a new account on secondlife.com, those “quick peeks” soon turn into lengthy visits. And we all know what happens next. Bit by bit, the occasional escapades to the dark corners become your main activity. You start by exploring naturist communities (since your prudish upbringing keeps you away from nudist beaches), where you discover that your default avatar won’t take you as far as you’d like to go with that sultry elfin who giggles at your

every comment. Not that the items in the welcome package in our Library won’t look great in most instances, but you realize that you won’t seal the deal if you can’t take off your underwear. No, you need the best-looking avatar money can buy: a mesh body and head, and at least a 2K skin, complemented by as many dapper and pretty outfits as your budget allows. Yes, by now you want to keep up with the new friends you’re making in those remote confines of the grid. At this point there’s no going back and you know it. You not only buy the multi-option sofa that you so successfully tried at the store, but also a house on your own piece of land to be safe from prying eyes. You’ve learned to appreciate your privacy and a rental surrounded by nosy neighbors just won’t do for you. But If you think that that’s all you need to enjoy the hidden delights in the shady sims of SL, that’s because you haven’t considered the question of your private bits. Provided they are unassuming and low-maintenance, girls can go about their business with no need to accessorize. That doesn’t mean that there are no accessories on the market for the lady of refined tastes. On the contrary, the shelves are brimming with all kinds of items and women get to choose among a wide range of products designed to enhance, intensify, and amplify the most intimate of experiences, both physically and visually. The gentleman, on the other hand, finds himself forced to complete his anatomy if he wants to taste the joys of the shrouded garden of pleasure. That complement, though, doesn’t necessarily have to be a burden on his finances, already depleted after the purchase of mesh bodies, mesh heads, outfits, and whatnot. If he is not too demanding—or rather, if his partner is not too demanding—he can always visit a freebie dungeon to find something that will get the job done. But you may be a fashionable, stylish, and sharp sybarite who wouldn’t touch a freebie with a tenfoot pole. For you, only the high-end offerings of the most exclusive creators may satisfy your appetite for luxury and good taste, while delivering the state-ofthe-art performance you expect from any item you use. Rest assured that there will be no want of the most advanced devices that will let you explore the most intimate corners of the chamber of delights.

SECONDPIX

& DEMA FAIRPORT Compe Lockwood

W

e have all been there. It begins with a familiar Second Life frustration. You spot something stunning in a blog photo. You spend an hour hunting for it. Even after all of that work, sometimes you still never find what you were looking for – until now. SecondPix is your answer.

a living, breathing place. “SecondPix is the home,” Dema explains. “I wanted one place where every part of this community could exist together.” At its core is tagging—an elegantly simple feature that turns inspiration into immediate discovery. Bloggers post a photo, tag each product, and shoppers go straight to buy, whether on Marketplace or in-world. Community by design SecondPix is not another scrolling feed. It is a working hub for participation and credit. In Second Life, everything—clothes, buildings, landscapes, vehicles—is made by its Residents. “And on SecondPix, every single one of those things can be tagged,” Dema says. The result: creators are discovered, bloggers are recognized for their curation and styling, and shoppers get exactly what they came for—without the hunt.

The tool is the brainchild of its founder, Dema Fairport. “SecondPix started as a question,” she says. “Why does shopping in SL still feel like guesswork? “Why indeed. Dema may have the answer. “I built a platform where bloggers and stores can tag every product in their photos with a direct link where to buy it. One click, and you are there. No hunting. No guessing.” Dema frames the project as more than a tool—it’s a home. “It is not another social media platform or shopping app,” she notes. “It is a Community focused publication that brings everyone together!” SecondPix is designed for the people who make the world: bloggers, creators, event owners, magazines, and thousands of Residents who treat Second Life as S E C O N D P I X & D E M A FA I R P O RT

The community lives in two places. The site anchors the content, while an active Discord serves as the living room—where people ask questions, share feedback, and help shape the roadmap. “Both are very much alive,” Dema adds. Features have been sparked, refined, and launched based on Resident input. Magazines belong in the story From the start, SecondPix aimed to reflect the whole of its world, which meant magazines weren’t an addon—they were essential. “Magazines in Second Life have been telling our stories for years,” Dema the creator proclaims. “They’ve driven fashion trends, highlighted creators who might never have been found otherwise, and their interviews remind Residents that Second Life is not just a game.” Leaving magazines out would break a cultural throughline. Enter the Media section—available now. Under Discover, a dedicated SL Magazines filter lets readers browse publishers’ posts, and magazines obtain profile pages to share directly with readers and build

followings. A standout is Issuu integration: publishers can post their current cover, paste in an Issuu link, and readers can open and read the full issue without leaving SecondPix. Magazine profiles are publicly accessible, so even visitors who aren’t logged in can read. It places magazines “right alongside the rest of the community, visible to everyone,” notes Dema. From beta to boom SecondPix moved quickly from idea to impact. After a beta from May through early June, the official launch landed on June 8. The timing was driven less by a marketing calendar and more by community momentum. “Residents drove that,” Dema says. “Their feedback, their testing, their passion for what SecondPix could be.” Adoption followed: in its first months, the platform saw thousands of Residents join, hundreds of creators and brands come aboard, and tens of thousands of posts published—evidence, Fairport says, that “the community was ready for this.” A door that opens from the inside Account setup is intentionally simple and in-world. There are two requirements: be 18 or older and have a Second Life account. Verification happens where it matters. Sixteen years in Second Life taught Dema why that matters. “Sixteen years in Second Life teaches you things,” she says. “It teaches that this world is real in all the ways that matter. The creativity is real. The community is real. The passion people pour into every build, every outfit, every photo is genuinely extraordinary.” SecondPix leans into that identity: join, create a profile, contribute, discover. It’s a place made by and for Residents. What’s next: “I just launched groups on August 3, and am genuinely excited about it,” she notes. Groups imports, video, and commerce. SecondPix’s roadmap continues to meet practical needs and longstanding pain points. Groups, newly launched, enable curated spaces around photos and content— ideal for brands running contests, showcasing bloggers, and cultivating real communities. For creators with years of work on Flickr, a built-in import tool brings those archives into a richer, shoppable context. Video support is on the horizon,

a natural fit for a visual world that thrives on motion and atmosphere. A living world, a shared home The vision behind SecondPix isn’t about building another social network—it’s about amplifying what already exists in-world. “Second Life is like no other creative outlet in the world,” Fairport reflects. “It is more than a sandbox, more than a social space; it’s a living, breathing world full of extraordinarily talented creators.” SecondPix doesn’t replace that world; it gives it a home where inspiration connects to action and every contributor—blogger, creator, shopper, publisher—can be seen. That’s why the details matter: a tag on a product, a one-click path to a store, a profile page that showcases a magazine’s latest issue. They remove friction and elevate credit. Multiply that across thousands of posts and hundreds of creators, in a culture that still capitalizes the word Resident, and a pattern emerges: a place designed to make discovery easier, recognition clearer, and participation more meaningful. “SecondPix was built to be home for all of it,” Fairport says. “You join, you have a profile, and you are part of it… a place built by Residents, for its Residents to share their creativity.”
