Sometimes, though, it’s not about where we land, but when. As wondrous as the teleport system may be to take us from place to place, it also may be used to visit a different point in time. Time travel has tickled humanity’s fancy ever since someone expressed the wish to go back in time to “fix” a mistake. And not just any mistake, but one so big, fateful, and momentous, that it changed that person’s life forever.

If the only thing keeping you from time travel is the lack of the right outfit to blend in, you should know that there are also shopping opportunities at the sim where you can find time-appropriate garments. As an added benefit, all proceeds from sales there go to benefit The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. So, you’re not really shopping as much as you’re donating, see?

e all have been there: you clicked the wrong landmark and ended in a godforsaken sim, besieged by bloodsucking vampires who want to recruit you for their family— or, at least, sell you an anti-bite potion. Perhaps it’s the other way around: you land in a beautiful sim, surrounded by gorgeous people who only want to cater to your every whim. What happens next is anybody’s guess.

Who hasn’t had at least one such “uh-oh” moments in their life? A moment that, looking back in time, we can pinpoint as the source of nearly all of our grievances, woes, and hardships. And the more consequential that moment was, the deeper and more ardent is our wish to go back and have a second chance, a “re-do”, if you will. “If only I had done this and that, if only I had said the word, done the deed…” And we think that with our current level of experience and knowledge, we could do so much better: we could make the right choices, and our lives would have taken a better direction. Nothing, of course, guarantees we would do better if given that second chance. After all, most of those bad choices we regret now were made not by our rational mind, but under the heat of our emotions. Thus, when confronted by the same situation, we would likely react the same way we did the first time, no matter how our experience and knowledge warn us about the dire consequences. But we were talking about teleporting back to the past in Second Life. Is that even possible? Apparently yes, if Hill Valley is any indication. This is where Marty McFly landed after his unwitting T I M E T R AV E L

That’s the kind of time travel we all wish for, right? So, what are you waiting for? Take the TP to Hill Valley and, just like Marty, try to set your future life in the right direction. But beware: should you fail, you may cause your disappearance from the very life you’re trying to fix.

Hill Valley is part of Creations Park, which channels 100% of all proceeds and donations to the Foundation. Creations Park is the brainchild of Barbie Alchemi, whose RL mother suffered Parkinson’s but found some relief by doing things in Second Life the disease didn’t allow her to do anymore in RL. That’s why some years ago, Alchemi decided to establish the sim and team up with the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Besides Hill Valley, Creations Park also hosts a party yacht; a romantic garden; a chakra temple; and the Savoy Club, a themed ballroom where you can enjoy the music of the 30s and 40s, learn how to dance, and even find a partner to practice! You may access all these places from the main landing point, where you will also find interesting shopping opportunities. A final piece of advice: when you’re visiting Hill Valley, be sure to turn on your speakers and hit the play button. You’ll be delighted with a great selection of oldies but goldies from the fifties. And now that you’re at it, don’t forget to complete the hunt for the infamous Sports Almanac, which would come to cause so many headaches in the second installment of the Back to the Future saga. have good news and bad news: the good news is that it is autumn, and the bad news is that this means SL and the northern hemisphere are closer to winter. However, the silver lining is that in SL, autumn means it is time to redecorate your home or even change up your house altogether. I love the changeover of seasons in SL, and I am super excited about the autumn colours. I think it is my favourite time of year. Today I am going to show you a cool tiny home that shows your house doesn’t need to be big for you to have fun decorating. I loved decorating this home and finding ways of creating separate ‘rooms’ within a very confined space. It also meant that I could create outdoor spaces to sit and enjoy fall in all its glory. The home is from Kazza. It has been on offer in the Happy Weekend sales, and each week they have added items that are purpose-built to fit into the space. I have enjoyed seeing the creations and how they have utilised all available nooks and crannies in this fabulous home.

The rest of the furniture and decor I have added from my inventory to give the house those homely touches and to make the home look lived in. I will be moving in tomorrow and using this house as my new SL abode— that is how much I love it! I also wanted to create an outdoor area that gave the whole home an ‘off the grid’ feeling, complete with a pool and a vegetable garden. Sadly, I had so much to show that you won’t get to see the rest of the land area in the photos, but you can imagine it there. I have also ensured that the outside area has plenty of fruit trees to offer shade as well as food. In fact, I have created this space with a New Zealand feel, as that is where I am from. It is green with ferns, trees, and rolling hills— just like home. I hope you enjoy creating your own home away from home here in SL. Go exploring, find new stores, dream big, and let your imagination go wild this fall.

The house itself was, of course, the first item, and this was followed in succession by the bed and stairs, the couch that fits in the lounge area, the kitchen and dining area, the pool, the two-seater couch for the dining area, and the bathroom. There is more to come, but in the meantime, I have used the mezzanine area to create an office space. I have no idea what Kazza will bring out to go there, but I am excited to see if their ideas match mine.

kamaustra is methodical, meticulous, and calculating in practicing her craft. She’s a burglar. Her specialty is robbing

banks.

Why does she do it? “Because I’m a criminal,” the streetwise felon answers with a crowbar in hand, smashing an ATM machine’s cash box and loading ill-gotten gains into a brown paper bag. “This is what I do,” she shouts over her shoulder while running into the night. And another day falls in Second life’s Sinful Society, where survival means avoiding the wrong side of town. That’s not easy: in Sinful Society, there is no good side of town. But if you loved playing cops and robbers as kids, then you will be euphoric playing the same game as adult avatars.. “I have fun here,” Akamaustra notes with a smile, her brown bag of green money held with clenched fists. “I would never do anything like this in real life but love it the second one.” Others do business here as well, some legal and others… eh, happy to be here. Indeed, hundreds of Second Life citizens are members of Sinful Society. They portray men and women of questionable virtue and assume roles both good and evil. Police— many outstanding officers, others as crooked as worms on a pancake griddle —criminals, jail mates, gang members, defense attorneys, and even the curious walk these streets. “We love for people to play here in character,” says Angel Sosa, one of the four co-owners of the sim of law and sometimes order. “We have amazing people who come to Sinful and bring a

lot of good fun to it.” Co-owner Jessiealina (Jessie) agrees: “Everyone gets into character.” Players create their character and personality and the degree of good or evil. They also dress the part, providing their own clothes to match who they are. Jessie adds, “they all leave happy and laughing and come back the next day for more. I think a lot of people are here to let off steam instead of doing it in RL.” The site was founded, created, and co-owned by Angel’s husband, Don Sosa. The final co-owner is Nathan, Jessie’s husband. Angel brags about her spouse, Don. “He makes all the stuff here, including scripts and codes.” He has created one of the most realistic portrayals of ‘the hood’ in Second Life. The group has about 500 members, with 30 to 50 onsite on any given day. They create role plays based on missions which may include auto theft, kidnapping, robberies, bank heists, and other misdeeds. Many land in jail— serious jail, as there is no escape. “The prison allows you to pay bail to get out,” says Don Sosa. “Trying to teleport out only gets you teleported back in with more time and penalties added to your stay.” Criminal court is held here. “I do both defense and prosecution,›› says Sinful life attorney Zarah Mae Sterling. “But I think I like being a prosecutor the most.” On average, her caseload is about 5-7 a month.

At this writing, Attorney Zarah is in Sinful Life Court defending herself from assault charges. “However, I’ve got dozens of witnesses, including the other party’s family, that are going to testify on my behalf,” she states. We wish her well. There is a bright side to this virtual world of urban blight: Sinful members love to party. When the missions are done, roleplays completed, the good and the bad come together for a good time, reminiscing, reliving the missions, and simply having fun together. “We have a lot of events every week,” Angel says. “There are dances, game rooms, a bar, bingo, and more. The members enjoy it.” The site also rents apartments. “We have 40 rental units, and only three are vacant,” adds Angel. “That’s how busy we are.” Just as the TV town of Mayberry took on a personality, so do the streets of Sinful— only more ominous. There is the Sinful Society Supermarket, where shoplifters go to hone their skills. Nearby is perhaps the most thriving store on the sim, the Ammu-nation gun shop. Other stores and shops in need of paint dot the skyscape, including the Southern Fried Chicken Diner— “Old Fashion Good” —and a dry cleaners. It takes a few visits to learn your way around. Just follow the gunfire, and you won’t get lost. At the end of the day, missions are accomplished and all are friends again, enjoying and laughing about the day’s encounters. Such is life in Sinful Society, where crime just might pay— depends on how good you are at it.

hen Zuri Lyric recently reopened Lazuri, many Second Life residents were thrilled. Finally, they got a chance to see some of her new work and some popular previous jewelry releases updated in mesh. Walk past those new releases, and you’ll find her older collections— and a small glimpse into Second Life’s pageant and modelling history. It also doesn’t take long to see that one model features prominently in the promotional art for the various pieces. That model’s name is Lolita Paragorn. Paragorn began her Second Life on January 23, 2010, and her very first memory was asking, “How can I detach this skirt?” From the impressive body of work on the blog she started in 2011— just one year later —it appears she more than figured it out. Even back then, she had an undeniable eye for fashion and a strong sense of personal style. The grid would soon take notice. She entered her second life with determination, setting high goals for herself and wasting little time in pursuing them. Paragorn started with her first passion: modeling. The very first picture on her Flickr feed is of her MVW modelling certificate signed by model gurus Kay Fairey and Frolic Mills. That set her up with official training, laying the groundwork to reach even higher and, in 2013, she had a landmark year in her modeling career. That was the year Lolita Paragorn became a contestant in the Miss Virtual World Pageant 2013 (she represented France). She recalls that experience fondly: “I was so honored to work with very grateful designers, and I’m proud to recognize PHOTOS: LOLITA PARAGORN

them for that.” She followed that up with fulfilling dream number one: to represent Purplemoon Creations (the high fashion label created by Poulet Koenkamp) by becoming Miss Essence of PurpleMoon. It was not an easy contest, but you can tell she is very proud of her performance in the talent portion (she did a French cancan dance wearing a mix and match styling). Winning that contest set the stage for achieving her next dream: becoming part of The Fantasy Angels model group (the Second Life equivalent of the elite Victoria’s Secret Angels). While she affirms that modeling remains her first priority, adding to her blog Escapades is a close second. Paragorn began blogging as many residents do: both to show off her stylings and as a suggestion “to follow the modeling career”. “SL is a world where we can extend our imagination; it is a means to push our creativity.” All of her blog work exemplifies that credo. She is almost a chameleon, with so many looks being presented and each done with a keen eye for details. The looks she creates shows her own personal style as well, which she defines as “classic, chic, elegant, simple,” and of course, French. While Paragorn does admit that the short deadlines sometimes associated with blogging are a challenge, she can generally complete a blog post in a few hours. She knows that it’s perfect when the details all work together to give her a “WAHOO!” moment. When she releases new posts, it is with the goal that people will see it and think, “This pic is very nice.” Considering she has 9.7K followers on Flickr, I would say she is definitely succeeding.

While she does have a rather impressive number of past and present sponsors (at least 50) and tries to blog every day, Paragorn still makes a goal of giving herself free time. She knows that “it’s impossible to do it all.” That’s when she and Renato (her SL partner) go to concerts, explore new sims, speak with friends, and of course, go shopping. In her words: “I follow the SL evolution. I keep my style and improve it”— shopping is a big part of that. The most impressive thing about Lolita Paragorn isn’t that she is a modeling and blogging success story but that those successes haven’t gone to her head. When about being admired for her style and talent, she responds with a very humble, “I don’t know if I have admirers, but I like what I do on Second Life.” To that, all that can be said is so do we, Lolita, so do we. n May 2021, BOSL & VR Magazine published an article on depression and mental health. In this follow-up piece, we will be taking a closer look at the lives and experiences of three Second Life residents that know all too well the ravages this illness can have. As National Family Day (US) is on September 28, it’s interesting to see how family relationships played a role in each of their lives, both as a trigger and as a source of strength to overcome their depression. Thank you to each of them for being brave enough to share their deeply personal accounts.

rom a working mother whose depression stems from childhood:

“I can´t breathe, my heart thumps like hell, I start crying and then come the questions: ‘Am I good enough?’, ‘Did I do it all?’ All the self-doubts seem to come up in that moment as well as this horrible fear that I am not getting it right. It partially comes from my mother, who had very high standards which created a fear that I wasn’t good enough. These criticisms were never countered with her saying ‘I love you’ or ‘I’m proud of you.’ Now that I am a mother myself, the fear of never being good enough caused me to push my own son away. It was only through medical intervention (counseling, medication, hospital stays, and help from family) that I was finally able to pull myself out of it. While my son knows that I still have bad days and need some ‘alone’ time, I am happy that I am finally able to give him parental affection. Tucking him in at night has become a bonding ritual. The most important thing is to make sure that he knows that his mother loves him. I would hate for him to think otherwise.”

rom someone who has experienced the loss of a parent, and that increased their symptoms of depression:

“My struggle with depression intensified when my father died suddenly. Since then, I have recurring nightmares of being with him that last day before he died, when he softly whispered to me ‘I want to go home.’ I cannot shake off his words; to this day I still hear them. The guilt and sadness that I did not spend more time with him or grant his wish is tremendous and deep. To deal with those emotions, my doctor prescribed medication. For a while, they helped, but I chose to stop taking them at the end of 2020. The result was my crawling into a very deep chasm of pain and sorrow, as well as feeling uncentered and out of control. Thoughts of not being on this Earth by jumping off a tall freeway bridge near my home were very tempting. Not wanting to hurt my husband and cause further pain to my widowed mother, I was able to stand against those thoughts and return to taking my medication. While there are some trigger moments— especially in SL —I am doing better now.”

he death of a family member also plays a role in increasing depression. However, theirs manifested differently:

“My severe depression got its start the day my estranged brother died. There was always a hidden hope in my heart that the rift would be mended, and my family restored. But the day I heard he was killed was the day all hope went out of me. Without that, any sort of positive thinking was impossible. At first it was just devastating sadness. But over time, it took a turn into something I didn’t know was a symptom of depression until recently. Anger. Now a man can be angry, and that’s acceptable. A woman, though? Women are supposed to be sweet and agreeable. But inside, I am so often in this cycle between seething with rage and absolute despair— but it all stems from depression. It’s become worse over time; now when I get upset, I have severe panic attacks. The part that troubles me the most is that it’s like my self-control is diminishing; that I am losing my sanity and will never regain normalcy. It’s a very frightening place to be. I am so thankful to my family who help me find calm in the storm.”
