he night is beautiful at Tresors Speciaux Café. With twinkling lights in Old World charm, the romantic eatery transforms an ordinary evening into a dinner in Paris – just a mouse click away.

Other entrees include ribeye steak with garlic butter and lobster mashed potatoes, or filet mignon on crab cakes – the same as eaten in real world homes, in your dreams, before awakening to crackers and peanut butter.

Tresors shines as all that is good in culinary Second Life and would be an asset in the real world. But for now, let us enjoy its cyber presence.

The menu changes often. Breakfast, brunch, lunch and desserts are available too. Just ask. Special requests are honored.

Yes, the food is pixelated make believe but the atmosphere is real. And unlike real world diners, guests here meet, greet, and eat in COVID-free comfort.

Diamond adds, “I give you the ambiance and romance of Paris with excellent service. If you need décor for your event, I will do that too. The experience is tailored just for you.”

“May I offer you a glass of wine?” host / owner of this quintessential French finery, Diamond Hades inquires. A Texas resident with Parisian inspirations, her ideas for what a restaurant should be in the real world are displayed in the second one. “People come here for the roleplay experience, just as if they were having dinner in real life,” Diamond says, as we accept glasses of vino from a sterling silver tray.

Guests teleport to a paved deck with glittering tiny lights scattered over footpath tiles. The front entrance is flanked by two Eiffel Towers, illuminated in a manner befitting the City of Lights.

In addition to checking in, the main entrance has a relaxing lounge area where one can have a glass of wine while waiting for a friend, date, or to be seated. All of the above would be a nice option too.

She continues, “I take their order and I serve them. They receive an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. Dining options include ginger glazed salmon, beef tenderloin over lemon couscous, beef tartare with grilled vegetables, and Brussel sprouts tossed in rich olive oil.

Facing the front desk, take a left, for small parlors and seating for two to two dozen. Keep walking to an outdoor area for receptions and social gatherings for larger groups. Balloons are everywhere, color coordinated to match the décor and hanging plants flank arched doorways. The many chambers, hallways, brickwork, and masonry, is typically found in 200-year-old French villas. Yet Tresors is a year old.

“I wanted to give couples, families, and their friends, some place beautiful to have a meal together,” says Diamond. “Tresors is a place I have always wanted to visit. So I created it here in SL.” For those wanting a more realistic canopy of stars, a rooftop wine bar is available. It offers great views of skies above or downward gazes at the world one floor down. The bar opens into an adjacent full seating dining room with flowers and furnishings totally different from the ground level facility.

As one might expect, anniversaries and dates are popular here but so are rezz day celebrations, birthdays – both RL and SL - and any other reason one feels a need to celebrate. Last month (August) Tresors seated 50 people. From large groups to couples wanting alone time, virtual reality’s fine dining experience makes it happen.

S

ooner or later, we all must face harsh reality, pay the consequences of our actions, and end up in jail. The reasons for losing our freedom may be as numerous as the situations that arise around us, and thus, being behind bars is hard to avoid since there cannot be a one-fits-all solution.

We may lose our freedom, but that does not mean we should lose our style— no, sir! So, if we inevitably find ourselves in the juncture of doing time, we might as well choose to do it in a wellrenowned institution. And if we are talking about world-wide famous correctional establishments, the first name that pops in our heads is Alcatraz, the infamous high-security prison located in the small rocky island of the same name, off the Bay of San Francisco.

Alcatraz! Its sole mention was able to send shivers down the spine of the most notorious criminals, among them Al Capone, Arthur Baker (son of the celebrated Ma Baker), and the Anglin brothers. If you decided to pay your debt to society there, you’d be rubbing elbows with the crème de la crème of the underworld.

But the island was not always a home for criminals.

In fact, its development initiated back in 1846 with the building of a lighthouse while the island and surrounding areas still belonged to Mexico. While the US government began to fortify the island with the intent of protecting the bay, the Civil War saw it converted to a prison for Confederate sympathizers. Alcatraz was officially labeled a prison in 1868, officially for military prisoners. In 1933, the Department of Justice bought the place to transform it into the high-security prison it would become famous as.

DOING TIME IN STYLE

The salty breeze from the surrounding sea took a heavy toll on the aging structures, so by the late 1950s, remodeling and renovation work began.

However, repairing the dilapidated buildings could prove prohibitively expensive. The mere cost of running the prison was excessively high; over three times more than other prisons. Thus, in 1962, the authorities decided to close the prison by 1963. It was later developed as a tourist attraction, drawing 1.5 million visitors a year.

Just because it’s closed now doesn’t mean you can’t do time in an ill-reputed prison like Alcatraz. Of course, since it’s an island, you’ll need a boat to reach it. No problem. You may take the ferry at the pier, and in no time you’ll be treading on the footsteps of the most memorable criminals. Remember, though, that you’ll be in the company of the worst ilk mankind has to offer, so you may want to blend in and keep a low profile, lest standing out puts a target on your back.

Oh, yes— it may be hard to believe, but there were several cases of inmates being beaten and even murdered by their fellow prisoners. Of course, the crimes only added a few years to an already harsh sentence, so it didn’t make a big difference.

Before heading to Alcatraz, you may want to rummage through your inventory or visit your favorite store to find place-appropriate garments. Remember, if looks can be deceiving, the right clothes will let you deceive your fellow inmates, blend in, and be safe in their company.

How long are you going to stay? Unlike the inmates’ court-ordered stays, you get to decide. If you get tired of being there, then you can always escape. Wait, you may think, wasn’t Alcatraz a high-security prison?

Sure, it was, but that only means you need to try harder to get out of there. Just like the Anglin brothers and Frank Morris did in June 1962. They dug a tunnel from their cells to one of the corridors; made papier-mâché heads to put on their beds, so the guards would think they were still asleep; and even managed to build a raft out of stolen raincoats.

Who said that necessity is the mother of invention?

To be honest, a debate continues over whether they succeeded to reach the mainland aboard that dubious raft or if they drowned in the cold waters under the heavy rain that night. But that shouldn’t discourage you— even if the odds are against all your efforts.

Why would you want to go there in the first place?

Well, word has it that while the living conditions were slightly above tolerable, the food was much better than in any other prison. Who could say no to Taco Tuesday, right?

ctober is upon us and that means it is time for ghosts, ghouls and things that go bump in the night. It is also one of my favourite months of the SL year. I love how inventive the designers get with their autumn and Halloween items. It makes for a wonderful month of the year.

This month I thought I would head back to the events around SL and see what the designers are cooking up in their creative cauldrons. Of course, as I write this, I am in September so the goodies are just beginning, but already I am seeing what is in store for us as the days get darker and the zombies arise…

The first items are from nӧveny and I tracked them down at The Darkness Event. I am pretty keen on acquiring both of these for my front yard. I love that you can change the textures to suit your own tastes. Perfect for scaring the neighbourhood kids when they come trick or treating.

The second items come from Ariskea and were on display at Anthem. These will be perfect to add a taste of fall flavours to your land. Add some apple trees and you have the perfect orchard look.

Speaking of cabins in swamps, this one would be perfect. It is from Steelhead and I am pretty keen to sit on that porch on the rocking chairs and while the hours away. I can watch the alligators and wait for trespassers.

if combines his love of aviation and art together on canvas conveying the breathtaking magic of flight though a history of challenges overcome by hard work and determination.

A member of the American Society of Aviation Artists, Bif ’s paintings have hung in several aviation museums. His work entitled “Glider Over Pike’s Peak” once held a prominent position at the Pentagon as a personal favorite in the Office of the Air Force Chief of Staff.

It is Bif ’s personal contribution to the beauty of flight that compels him to preserve on canvas this long and proud history for each new generation.
