Many adjectives describe the BOSL Innovation Pavilion. “Opulent”, “lavish”, “exciting” come to mind. “Quiet” does not. But it is today. On this January morning, the stage is dark, life is calm— quite the contrast to last December when Ann (Annough Lykin) was proclaimed Miss Virtual World 2022. Today, she returns to this very stage where the magic happened. In a time of reflection, she looks back at the journey to this point, the New Year ahead, and what it means to wear a crown. The calmness is a striking opposite of the Miss Virtual World event. Admittedly, part of the fun is the frenzy. Well, unless you are a contestant. “There is so much going on during the contest and right after, you barely have time to breathe,” says Ann, as we talk from a cheese and cracker laden table near the stage where glamor melds with excitement. Two words commonly heard backstage during the pageant are “stress” and “anxiousness”. Ann explains, “the words have different meanings. Stress is managing complicated outfits, creating complex yet awesome outfits in a short time, having the right poses, and feeling ready for the stage.” Stress can also be a good thing that keeps you on schedule. “Anxious is often the fear of the unknown,” she continues. “Being on a runway is not stressful to me, but I am always nervous that something can go wrong. So I’m anxious but not stressed.” Ann is not new to Miss Virtual World. Nor is she a stranger to the inner workings of a pageant. She has competed before, including once representing Finland in 2011 and now Germany in 2021. This year’s crown holder covers many bases. She is from Germany, currently lives in the UK, and speaks English and German.

But like many of us, Ann’s real world merged and sometimes clashed with the second one. “Over the years, I learned a lot as a blogger, photographer, model, and former agency owner,” she recalls. “But there comes a time when real life is challenging. About five years ago, I started spending less time in SL. I sorted out my real life and moved from Germany to the UK.” Once settled in her new world, Ann pondered the second one that she had left. “I was curious how Second Life would feel, what, if any, changes had taken place.” She logged in, met old friends, and started right away to— as she says —“feel back at home.” The second time was the charm; so was the Second Life. Over time, she resumed work in the SL modeling business and joined a few agencies. A good friend encouraged her to re-enter contests. “I don›t know how much I influenced her, but I have seen Ann’s skills and thought it would be a great idea if she participated in prestigious contests such as MVW,” recalls Margot LaSalle, cohort and co-model. “She pays attention to detail when it comes to styling, and she has a natural grace in her posing. Not to mention that she creates poses herself.” Margot adds, “What I appreciated first in Ann is her intelligence. She catches things on the fly. She is also a perfectionist and always strives for something better. She’s a professional.” Ann heeded Margot’s advice, did personal soul searching, entered the contest, and before you could say lights, camera, action, the curtain rises. After months of work – rivaling RL endeavors in time commitment and dedication – it was on with the show. All eyes were on the BOSL Innovation Pavilion. Short version: She won. “I am of course, happy— very happy,” Ann says,

022 recalling the day her name completed the sentence “and the winner is—”. “All the work I put into the contest paid off. What I managed to achieve was not exactly ‘wearing a crown’ but to prove to myself that I have it in me, that I can make it work, and that people like what I come up with.” Winning is one thing, but as they say on late night TV info-commercials – ‘wait, that’s not all.’ With the crown comes responsibilities. “As Miss Virtual World, my job is to represent BOSL. I also will organize charity events,” she adds. “I have some rough ideas, but it is more the headline yet than the details.” Her desire is to represent/create charities that are not related to a specific country but are of interest to all, such as events helping children, animals, and nature. As for real world interests and hobbies, Ann smiles: “SL is my hobby.” Her other SL pursuits include landscaping, building/decorating, photography, sailing sims, and exploring the vast cyber world. In the real world, she enjoys travel, motorcycling, bicycling, and long walks. Life is busy, but Miss Virtual World is up to the challenge. Ann takes a down-to-earth approach to winning the title. A model in demand, she is not into the “show biz,” glamor, and glitz trap that sometimes befalls others. Her friends, including Margot LaSalle, note “Other people with half of Ann’s skills fly in the clouds, but she is down-to-earth, open to suggestions. She studies, analyzes, and delivers. I think that is a huge plus for MVW and BOSL.” Indeed, it is also a plus for Ann Lykin, model, friend, and crown wearer for the 2022 reign of Miss Virtual World. Good luck in the year ahead. THE PERFECT DATE Coco St. George

ebruary has arrived, and with it comes the date of dates, the Mother of All Dates: the 14th, St. Valentine’s Day. How are you planning to celebrate the day dedicated to love, to the joys of having a significant other with whom to share our lives? Don’t tell me you are going to sit out the holiday this year, only because you broke up with your better half a few days ago. Did you know breakups spike significantly on the days leading to St. Valentine’s? People wiser and more learned than me say that phenomenon is due mainly to stress. And the stress is caused by the obsessive fixation on the idea of having a perfect date on St. Valentine’s Day. We need to go back several centuries to find out why February 14th is devoted to love and dating. As the legend goes, in the third century A.D., a Christian clergyman by the name of Valentinus defied the law issued by the Roman Empire banning people from getting married in an effort to expand his army. The belief was that men were too unwilling to leave their wives or lovers to enlist. But Valentine was either a priest or a bishop (historians are not certain about which of several Valentines is the one who gave rise to the legend… or story. There are two top contenders.) Not only did he marry people under the Christian Rite, but he also did so for soldiers, to the dismay of the Roman authorities. Thus, he was sent from his natal Terni, in central Italy, to Rome, where he met with Emperor Claudius II. There, Valentine tried to convince the Roman emperor to embrace Christianity and, after he failed, Claudius asked him to renounce his faith. Valentine didn’t, and the emperor ordered his execution. He was tortured and then beheaded on February 14th, 269 A.D. Many years later, in 496 A.D., that day was

chosen to celebrate the patron saint of lovers (but also of beekeepers, the mentally ill, and against the plague and epilepsy). That’s one version of the legend; others seem to have nothing to do with romance, instead following Valentinus’ attempt to convert a disbeliever and succeeding after healing a child, only to be executed by the emperor for his faith. Some historians actually credit Chaucer with the idea of a romantic tie to Valentine’s Day. After hearing this, you may be wondering why you should be stressed about having a perfect date on that exact day. Precisely, you shouldn’t. So, call that partner you so hastily dumped and tell them that the pre-St. Valentine’s jitters are no reason to deprive yourselves of the joys and pleasures of a perfect date. A perfect date starts by choosing the right location. You could rummage around in your Landmarks folder. Or, you could save yourself the time and hassle— point your teleporter directly to Ville de Coeur, a big estate comprising several sims with a markedly Mediterranean theme. You’ll arrive at the quaint cobble-stoned Harbor Square, where you can find stores— in case you’re in a shopping mood —and small cafés to have a coffee and talk about all you need to say on a day like this. Or, you may just walk around, admiring the wonderful views you will have in any direction. If you are not into walking, you can use a Vespa to travel around sitting comfortably. You may also catch a carriage and enjoy the tour around the sim. Or even easier: hop on the tramway and enjoy the simple things of life, the fresh air of the country, the tree-lined roads, the scented flowers.

Perhaps you are into more adventurous activities, something more energetic than sitting and watching. If so, you may like a horse ride. Head to The Thirsty Horse, a stable that offers a wide variety of horses to ride, and pick the horse that tickles your fancy. Many, many more activities fill the eight regions that make up Ville de Coeur, like golf, bicycle riding, bowling, Tai-Chi, row boats, a fitness center, and beaches where you can surf, ride a jet ski, play volleyball, and, of course, swim. Despite the variety of activities waiting for you, the most important part of the day— as with any date —is the pleasure of being in good company. Yes, let’s say it right away: no matter how beautiful the place, how fun the activities, or how much you spend on clothes and accessories, the key to the perfect date is finding someone to share it with. A HINT OF ROMANCE Arya Braveheart

f you were hoping for a full-on Valentine’s Day scene, then I am going to apologise in advance. Today’s home contains hints of romance but is not overt in its appearance. It is subtle and, hopefully, suits everyone— whether you celebrate February 14th, or you believe that love should be shown all year round. You will also notice that I am going for a summer theme this time, because for half of the world, it is summer time! I am celebrating the Southern Hemisphere and hoping it gives you Northern Hemisphere people a glimpse of warm breezes, swimming, and cocktails to get you through those cold days.

perfect for those summer evenings. It is also among the trees, in my scene, which makes it very private, but still high enough to enjoy the view whatever that may be. There is decking right around the home on both levels, so you have plenty of places to put chairs, blankets, plants, or whatever you want. Enjoy your February, whatever it means for you. Make it a month for love and peace— that means appreciating the people around you. Tell them you love them and hug them when you can. Enjoy.

The house itself is from KAZZA. I have wanted to use this home for a while, so I am pleased to dust it off and share all of its attributes— especially its true sense of indoor/outdoor flow. I will also be using a lot of the KAZZA furniture, as it is made to go in the smaller spaces of this build. However, I have added other items and decor to give it my own feel and to splash some February love about. I am loving the flow of this house and the option to create spaces that go with that theme. The name of the build is InsideOut, and it reflects the living style of this very summer home. The house has two levels, and it sits off the ground. The ground floor I have utilised as the living and dining area. This level also houses the pool/BBQ area so it’s easy to access for those spontaneous pool parties! The second floor is for the bathroom and bedroom, and flows off into a small deck area
