THE GRAND CANYON Article and Photography by: Sammie Audion The famous Grand Canyon holds two billion years of Earth’s biological history for those who look. The Colorado River has engraved a winding path through many layers of rock over a period of approximately 5–6 million years, exposing unique combinations of geologic color and erosional forms 277 river miles (446km) long, up to 18 miles (29km) wide, and a mile (1.6km) deep. For thousands of years, Native American tribes have built settlements within and along the canyon, and they inhabited some of the many caves. García López de Cárdenas from Spain, who arrived in 1540, is said to be the first European to have viewed the Grand Canyon. Not only is the immense size of the Canyon mindboggling, exploring the region is highly informative and can certainly help put humans in perspective compared to the big picture some call “Life, the Universe, and Everything.” But that perspective alone is not all there is to the Grand Canyon: fun and adventure await the visitor. The views are unforgettable to say the least. One of the best ways to experience the beauty of the Grand Canyon is through

the trails, whether you take hiking or riding ones. One example would be the Cape Final Trail, a 4.0 mi. / 6.4 km round-trip— approximately two hours of amazing hiking time. Moreover, bike rental stores let you take fun rides downhill along the canyon, and at an arranged time you will get picked up to get back. But keep in mind that you are in a very dry and hot region especially, during summer. Plan carefully and bring plenty of water! So, what in the world does that have to do with Second Life (SL)? The Grand Canyon exists in SL, too. Granted, you cannot possibly reproduce the enormity of this Natural Wonder of the World with pixels. However, things are certainly waiting to catch your attention at this virtualized version. How about riding a dirt bike or a Jeep down the canyon? But be warned— this ride is not as simple as it appears. This will require skill; yes, I admit, I failed! The edges of the wall might get uncomfortably close, your Jeep might get stuck, or worse, you might plummet.
Luckily, no one really hurts themselves in the process. If visiting the Grand Canyon, either make sure you have enough time on your hands or plan to come back Perhaps the balloon rides— perfect for a romantic for a second or even third trip. There is so much to get-away —might be more to your liking. Of course, be seen. Make sure to visit the saloon or the souvenir you need to make sure your date has the stomach for shoppes. After all, it takes time and effort to keep a the breathtaking views. You can, of course, hike or— place like this running, and the owners appreciate if so inclined —enjoy the excitement of a helicopter any form of support. Enjoy this virtual adventure; if ride. Something unique to the digital version is the we ever needed an excuse to stay in SL, COVID-19 eagle ride. Seeing the Canyon with bird’s eye view is has granted it. When climbing down the canyon, stunningly beautiful landscapes, stupendous waterfalls, and even some small lakes can be found. How about camping? Tents are already setup and ready if the day should come to an earlier end than planned.

Therefore, why not indulge in this romantic illusion of some good old times paired with a little raunchiness? Be aware that this Cuban dream is closer to the naughty, erotic tango than a nice Rockabilly romance. This homestead is set to adult – hence, not exactly the ideal destination for a family vacation. While our creative minds create an idealized composition when provided with the right and colorful details, what might it do to the big picture? Could it be that if we are provided with the right overall view, our mind will come up with the reasoning and the details? Of course,, given that said big picture meets the right sport for frustration, dreams, or desires. Just imagine this would be paired with peers that share in and confirm what non-peer might consider unreasonable. The basic preset of a cult is born giving room for a tribal mindset (us against the others). Scary! Now, this is not to say keeping a general big picture of something or put something in a bigger context is a bad thing of course. It’s just do say, if we let our mind to play tricks on us, it might like to play. Which can of course

THE HISTORY OF POLKA DOTS Polka Dots— retro-classic and so much fun to wear. While this pattern has been around for centuries, it was not always considered playful. The seemingly lighthearted pattern was once associated with the plague. The lighthearted polka dot pattern has an interesting history in fashion, and in this uncertain time, BOSL thought it would be fun to look at how this pattern evolved. In Medieval Europe, wearing dotted patterns was taboo because without machines, evenly spacing the dots was incredibly difficult. Uneven dots on fabric reminded people of the rashes caused by plagues like leprosy, smallpox, and the bubonic plague. They also reminded people of handkerchiefs spotted with blood from tuberculosis. These diseases were so common in those days that people could not help but see the similarities, perhaps on a subconscious level. Dots were considered to be bad omens and a pattern that should never be worn. This negative association continued through the Renaissance. Many non-Western cultures had their own uses for circles on fabric. Dots could convey male potency, triumph of the hunt, and magic. White dots are used during male-initiation rites in some Central African cultures, and circles play a role in both Islamic and Hindu art. The first time the term “polka dot” appeared in the context of fashion was in the 1840’s when they began to appear on bow ties and kerchiefs. Fashion historians believe that flamenco dancers started to use embroidery embellished with moonshaped mirrors made by the Romani people.
Article By: Sita Writer Photography by: Sammie Audion As dotted fabrics in Europe became more popular and evolved with machines in the 1800s, they were known by many names. Raised dots on tulle were called Dotted-Swiss; the French had quinconce, named for the pattern on a five side of dice; and the German had thalertupfen for the Thaler coin, their country’s currency. The Spanish word for dots is lunares, or “little moons.” Most fashion historians agree that the polka dot as we know it today emerged in the mid 19th century. The modern term “Polka Dot” comes from the polka dance craze that swept through Europe and America during this time. No one is sure where the word “polka” comes from, though there is some evidence that it refers to the traditional dance of a Polish woman (though the dance is thought to be Bohemian in origin), while another theory is that polka comes from the Czech word pulka, or “half ”, in reference to the dance’s small steps. Clever businesses took advantage of the polka dance craze and polka dot mania and began to manufacture clothes and accessories using this popular pattern. While the connection between this dance and the pattern isn’t totally clear, both are thought to evoke the cheerful, light fun that is reflected in the dance. During the rise of the dots, dandies like Beau Brummel— known for taking five hours to get himself ready anytime he left for an event popularized the pattern through their liking of dotted scarves and bow ties. The first time the term polka dot appeared in print was in 1857; a women’s lifestyle magazine, Godey’s Lady’s Book, promoted a polka dotted scarf, and with their article, the cat was out of the bag—polka dot popularity was here to stay. America began to really fall in love with the polka dot pattern when Miss America wore a swimsuit with polka dots in 1926; however, it wasn’t until the 40s that the polka dot craze really took hold.

During this time, Frank Sinatra’s song Polka Dots and Moonbeams brought about a resurgence of polka dot mania, with new clothes and items being manufactured. In the 50s, polka dot dresses reached their highest peak in popularity— there was even polka-dotted kitchenware! Polka dots even reached the haute couture runways in Paris. In 1954 Christian Dior debuted his new line, New Look Collection, that featured polka dots. In 1960, the hit song “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” by Brian Hyland catapulted polka dots to their prominent place in pop culture. Not to be left out, in 1961, Walt Disney introduced the beloved Minnie Mouse in none other than a red and white polka dot dress. From this point through the rest of the 20th century, polka dots were popular and associated with everything from Rockabilly counter
to the Boho fashion of the 70s. Today, polka dots have a retro vibe because of their iconic popularity in the 1940s and 1950s. I like to think of polka dots like Marc Jacob thinks of them: “There is never a wrong time for a polka dot.”

CAELAN HANCROFT-A UNIQUE WAY Article By: Yhishara Cerise|Photography: Caelan Hancroft In December 2007, Caelan Hancroft was asked by her real-life boss to investigate Second Life for a work-related project. While she initially intended to log in only for the time it took to complete her assignment, she found herself staying. At first, it was the shopping that held her interest. In time, she became a blogger, then began working for other SL brands in a variety of supportive roles. Those experiences laid the groundwork: “creating and working for myself was just a natural progression.”

Her persistence and determination paid off. After only a few months, she opened her own store called Cae with five original collections: Starfish, Knotted, Entangled, Enchanted, and Elegance. THE OTHER ROOMS I have really enjoyed bringing you this series about my home, inviting you in to see what I do when decorating my own spaces. Looking at my home through your eyes and what you would notice and not notice was also an adventure. I will confess that in this last part of the trilogy, I have added some April flavours to my usual decor. I am hoping you will spot them! You are going to see three spaces in my home today: a mezzanine walkway, the formal lounge, and the area outside my bedroom. Remember: all these areas are inside my Apple Fall Scandinavian Barn. I am enjoying this home so much; it has worked as a home that suits any season. So, follow me up the stairs out of the living room. Here, I have created a space to sit and enjoy the sun and the view. Two distinct sitting spaces are in this area. The first is practical, with hooks for coats and bags but with some entertainment extras like the records and player. The cat seems to have found a sunspot to lie in, as well! The other sitting space is a bit more comfortable: a great place to curl up with a book and a cup of tea or a glass of wine. It also has a little space to stretch out on the floor in comfort. I love having little nooks to sit or lie in— I am very much like the cats! Now, let’s head through to the other part of this mezzanine, the space outside my bedroom. I love this view, both overlooking the formal lounge and out the big windows. I do actually have a comfy chair here as well, but it didn’t fit in the photo!
Article and Photography by: Arya Braveheart Once you have finished enjoying the view, let’s head downstairs, through the living room and into the formal lounge. I have a black-and-white theme going on in here, and it is a great place for all the knick-knacks and decor items. The shelving lets me keep all those bits that you don’t really have anywhere else to put! Yes, I do have a thing about cats and teapots. How else do I get to show them off? Take a seat, and I will go and make you a coffee. Relax and take in the view. I hope you have enjoyed this tour of my home as much as I have enjoyed sharing it with you. I also hope it has inspired you to get in and redecorate your home or skybox. Splurge out and get something that suits your style. It will be worth it. Lastly, have fun with it and keep your eyes open for furniture and decor that you will enjoy. I was excited to learn more about her work and what sparks her inspiration.
