From The Headmaster

Once again busyness has been the hallmark of the term with a plethora of exciting and challenging activities both inside and outside the classroom. The expansion of the Godfrey Searle Choir to incorporate girls, the new timings for the Years 5 and 6 residential trips, the new dynamic resulting from the expansion of the Senior Leadership Team have somehow managed to make this whole term feel even more exciting than usual.

As you look through the coming pages, like me you will be reminded just how hard the staff work to give the children a great, rounded educational experience. From the array of sporting fixtures, to the concerts and the vibrant lessons there has been the usual purposeful buzz resonating through the school from the end of the Summer holidays right through to the exhilarating build up to Christmas.

As ever, I thank my colleagues for all their hard work, creativity and care for your children.

Our Assemblies 5B FIREWORKS ASSEMBLY

5GN HEROES ASSEMBLY 5GN performed a brilliant assembly based on Heroes. I played the part of Teddy Evans on the Endurance expedition. I had scurvy, Tom Crean was a hero because he went on an 18-hour trek to save me and my companion.

I really enjoyed the assembly because we had already done work on the expedition so I knew all about i.e. also took part in the dance that was to the song I need a hero by bonnie Tyler. All of the girls in our class took part and we made it all together.

Bibi In our school assembly about Heroes I took part as the narrator whilst my school friends acted out the parable of Feeding the Five Thousand. I enjoyed

taking part as a narrator because I like speaking and saying a lot of text in front of an audience.

Luca I took part in year 5GN’s assembly about Heroes, I found out that you don’t have to be a superhero to be a hero.

I also wrote a couple of lines about a Paralympian horse rider called Natasha Baker and how she is my hero because she is top of her sport and does not let her disability stop her achieving her best.

Along with all my friends I really enjoyed our assembly and would like to thank all the teachers who helped us put it together.

6A SNOWDON ASSEMBLY On the 4th of October 2017, 6A performed an assembly about their trip to Snowdon. The trip was enjoyed by all and the assembly gave the rest of the school the opportunity to see all the activities that took place.

Ori 6A’s class assembly was based on their trip to Snowdonia. They reenacted the activities, and talked about team well-being, individual wellbeing and environmental well-being.

6R TUDOR ASSEMBLY Back in October, 6R performed their assembly to the school. It was all about Tudor entertainment.

First we opened with the famous three witches scene from ‘Macbeth’.

We talked about how Tudors enjoyed attending public executions at the weekends and the different sports that the wealthy would play. Tennis was a popular sport but was played inside and with different rules to today.

Finally, we added in a bit of comedy with a quick summary of the plot of Macbeth. From the smiles on faces, everyone seemed to enjoy it.

INTRODUCING GIRLS TO THE CHOIR This has been a historic term for The Godfrey Searle Choristers. Having been in existence for over 100 years for boys trebles only, The Godfrey Searle Choir has taken the significant step of introducing girl choristers.

We welcome the ten girls from both RGS and RSM, delighting in their progress and the added dimension that they bring to the choir.

The choristers have been as busy as ever, enjoying a cathedral tour to Portsmouth and Chichester in half term as well as singing in some lovely concerts, all on top of their normal routine of matins and evensongs. This month alone they have performed in a fund raising concert for a Sri Lankan orphanage and another for the Reigate organisation ‘Loveworks’ where they entertained elderly residents with some Christmas music. The choir has been singing evensong at St Mark’s whilst the organ has been restored at St Mary’s. They have enjoyed an improved attendance but always welcome further listeners. If you would like a restful end to a busy day, please join us for some beautiful singing at 5pm on Thursdays, St Mark’s Church, Alma Road.

DOTTY FOR ‘CHILDREN IN NEED’ To support Children in Need, the children came bedecked in spotty almost everything: clothes, legs, faces, bags and blazers. A huge amount of money - a whopping £890 - was raised through selling merchandise and through donations. Thank you to everyone who made Children in Need so much fun and so successful!

Year 2 History Enquiry This term we have loved learning about London, especially about the Tower of London where we used our enquiry skills to ask and answer questions.

We found out that historians ‘enquire’ in order to be curious and find out more about a particular subject. We used enquiry-based questions beginning with ‘who…’, ‘where…’, ‘what…’, ‘how…’, ‘when…’ and ‘which…’ to help us be curious, encourage us to find out more and then to find out answers to these questions ourselves.

Here are some of our questions, including ‘why is there a moat?’, ‘how long did the tower take to build?’ and ‘which kings lived there?’

YEAR 2 ROYAL TEA PARTY Year 2 celebrated Queen Elizabeth II Coronation with a royal themed tea party! The children stood and sang The National Anthem before watching the Coronation. The children enjoyed eating a tea of shortbread, cupcakes and squash and had fun playing party games.

YEAR 2 WATERPROOF INVESTIGATION One of our many scientific experiments in Year 2 this term was to test different materials to see if they were waterproof or not. The children found the task very interesting and were surprised by some of the results!

Kindergarten Chronicle In Kindergarten we had a very busy term exploring our topic Our Wonderful World. Our Stunning Starter involved looking at our baby photos and talking about Ourselves. Everyone loved looking at our classroom display of the children’s self portraits and trying to guess who the babies were!

Mr Culverwell came in to visit us with his guitar, and the children enjoyed singing along to classics such as The Wheels on the Bus and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

After half term we moved on to learning about The World Around Us. We focused on a different area of the world each week and the children engaged in a variety of multicultural activities. We travelled to Asia, Australasia, Africa, the Americas, Europe and the Polar Regions.

We welcomed a number of visitors into our classroom to talk about areas of our wonderful world. Mrs Covey and Saba talked to us about their amazing visit to Kenya. The children loved looking at the photos of all the animals and Maasai people.

They were especially fascinated by the tribal necklace they brought in to show us.

AUTHOR VISIT ZEHRA HICKS INSPIRES THE LOWER SCHOOL Lower school were very lucky in October to receive a visit from author and illustrator Zehra Hicks.

She read some of her books to Year 1 and Year 2 then carried out a mini workshop with them. They brainstormed ideas together for a comic strip then made their own. They were also fascinated to see one of her books translated into Hebrew.

Mrs Marshall came in to talk to us about South Africa where she used to live. The children enjoyed looking at photos of wild African animals and they handled some South African money. We also learnt all about Thanksgiving from Mrs Herman. A big thank you to all of our visitors.

On our Marvellous Middle dress up day, the children (and teachers!) came to school wearing costumes and traditional outfits from around the world. We had Guatemalan dresses, Egyptian Pharaohs, Scottish kilts and Welsh dragons to name but a few!

The children enjoyed making pizzas and designing their own flags. They also indulged in a picnic of tropical fruit and mango lassi.

We ended our term with our Fabulous Finish Christmas party which involved lots of glitter, music, dancing and a festive feast.

IMPRESSIVE MUSICIANS AT THE INFORMAL CONCERT On 21st November we held our first Informal Concert of the school year in the wonderful venue of the Recital Room at Reigate Grammar School. The audience were treated to a programme including pianists, flautists, singers, violinists, clarinettists and a harpist. The children delivered polished and moving performances and all that attended were impressed with not only the high standard of singing and playing but also the confidence with which the performances were delivered.

YEAR 2 MATHS PROBLEM SOLVING PLay DougH INvESTIgaTIoN

Year 1 Maths - Numbers This half term in maths we have been consolidating the children’s knowledge of number by visiting a number of areas including recognising, estimating, comparing and ordering numbers. The children have used practical activities and games and a variety of resources to help achieve the learning outcomes.

After half term we learnt about halving and doubling, and we had a really fun Maths lesson where we applied our new learning into a real life context – measuring ingredients!

Miss Peters gave us a recipe to make some playdough, but the recipe was for 4 people and our groups were of 2,6 and 8 children! Together, we problem solved using doubling and halving to make sure we used enough ingredients for everyone. We had a great time taking it in turns to find, measure and mix in each ingredient.

Year 1 Maths - Time To develop the children’s concept of time, they were tasked with making and designing an analogue clock. Year 1 then had great fun playing the game ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf?’ to consolidate their understanding of time, particularly o’clock. Their clocks came in really useful when telling the time during the game and the school day. Unfortunately, Mr Wolf underestimated how good the children were at telling/setting the time and, before long, he had been caught!

YEAR 4’s TRIP TO INDIA On Wednesday 20th September Year 4 embarked upon an exciting trip to India!

This is my account of that journey.

I entered my classroom and found that it had been transformed into an airplane! My teachers were dressed as cabin crew, and our chairs were lined up in rows and columns.

The first class of the plane was very spacious with tables and, unfortunately, I was sat in second class where it was rather cramped. (Thankfully, I had great company). Tables had been turned upside to look like luggage compartments!

The RSM cabin crew carried out safety checks after watching the safety video. We had a smooth take off; we were on our way! We played the games we had packed in our luggage and made a stop at the mysterious playground in the sky (it was break time!)

After playing for some time, we continued on our exciting journey.

We truly enjoyed the inflight food. We arrived with a smooth landing. Hooray, we were in India. aqsa

As I turned around the corner, I saw children running around. Suddenly someone blew a shiny thing and immediately everyone stood still, lined up and went inside. So then I bravely and quietly walked in. First I saw a tall stick with a thin tissue at the top. On the tissue was a picture of a castle. Next, I saw a plastic bear staring at me, with its mouth open and I thought it was a little creepy. Later children came rushing out and one of them saw me and came over to look at me impressively. I curled into a ball and they went inside again. After that, I saw a house shaped thing with seats inside.

As I walked further, I saw a hedgehog-sized door attached to a tree. I walked back and saw a wooden gate with holes in it. I decided to crawl under it and I saw a small creature.

EARLY YEARS GREEN SHOOTS FaNTaSTIC FIREwoRk DISPLay! Green Shoots experimented with brushes and glitter to create a fantastic Firework Display. Great teamwork!

gINgERbREaD PEoPLE Green Shoots made Gingerbread People as their Fabulous Finish to their ‘All about Me’ topic. They each made two biscuits which they decorated themselves. They ate one for their snack and took one home to share.

HIbERNaTIoN HouSE

Year 1 Maths Measuring Year 1 children have been estimating, comparing and measuring length as one of their maths topics this term. They began the whole experience with following a recipe to make dough with which they would make a family of worms! Next they used their estimating skills to make a family of worms of varying lengths and used non-standard units, cube towers, to measure how long they actually were and then order them from shortest to longest worm.

Following this, standard units of measure were then introduced in the form of metre sticks.

The children thoroughly

enjoyed using the metre sticks to measure objects in the playground and classroom to determine whether they were shorter, longer or about a metre in length. Next time you are buying a carpet or a piece of furniture you would do well to ask a child in Year 1, as they have shown that they can use appropriate vocabulary and measure so accurately!

As part of our Hibernation topic, the Green Shoots children helped to set up our Hedgehog House. They put straw and leaves inside and some food outside ready to welcome any visiting hedgehogs to our garden. The children also put some sand outside the entrance and are checking daily to see if there are any footprints.

YEAR 3 GOOGLE EARTH ON THE iPADS In our Combined Humanities lessons, we have been exploring Rome using the iPads and we have used ‘Google Earth’ to help us to view this historical city in different ways.

I enjoyed it when we went onto ‘Google Earth’ to look at Rome and the colosseum.

It was great fun!

YEAR 1 BUNNIES

Year 3: ‘Stunning Start’ Pizza Making

During our Combined Humanities topic of ‘The Wild and Wonderful World’ Year One investigated the mysterious trail of lettuce leaves! Why were they there, who had left them and how could we solve the mystery? It was important that we made sure we worked as a team, were courageous and used our senses to investigate. After following the trail we found Bunny, we made sure to consider the view of the garden from Bunny’s perspective before heading back to the classroom to create our own garden scenes. Well done Year 1, you worked wonderfully as a team!

GARDENING CLUB YEAR 2 Gardening elective working hard to clear one PHONICS FUN area ready for planting spring bulbs. Keep an eye on the area in spring and see if you can see the first shoots appear.

Now what word can I make now? Year 2 had lots of fun exploring with sounds and making words. They needed strong phonological awareness for this challenge and a lot of team skills as well. Well done Year 2. You came up with lots of words!

YEAR 2 MATHS MEASURING INVESTIGATION Year 2 had enormous fun hunting for items to measure with their rulers.

They took the job very seriously and tried to find items without bumps in them so that they could obtain an accurate measure in centimetres.

anti-Bullying Week All Different, All Equal!

Pupils and teachers enjoyed the start to Anti-bullying Week with a lively assembly from Year 6, Mrs Gower and Mrs Page. The theme of the week was All Different,

All Equal. Throughout the week children created some fantastic posters celebrating differences.

Children listened and responded to stories celebrating differences and discussed bullying in their classes.

Well done to everyone for enthusiastically taking part in all the antibullying activities.

I found it very exciting and the best part was trying new foods that the Romans would have eaten. anna

Did you know Romans used a stick with a sponge on the end to clean themselves after visiting the toilet? They even shared the sponge with other Romans!

I enjoyed looking and learning about the remains of the Roman Villa. The mosaics looked old but they were still very effective!

I got to hold an ancient Roman saucepan that looked like a guitar shape and I also liked holding a real-life roman candle which they used to fill with oil.

YEAR 1 - WHAT MAKES A GOOD SENTENCE? Year One are very good detectives and their mission this half-term has been to investigate what makes a good sentence.

Armed with magnifying glasses they can readily spot nouns and are using them along with adjectives to write some super descriptive sentences.

Year4 Stunning Start India On Wednesday 20th September Year 4 had their stunning start to their India project, by pretending to go on a flight there (to New Delhi). We packed our suitcases with things that we would really need for India.

I put in my monkey, muesli and Top Trumps.

I sat next to Sofia McL and Mia. At first, we played Sofia’s magnetic hangman. Mia and Sofia did a really tricky one on passports. Talking of passports, we made our own passport; the drawing I did was awful! After that it was break time. It was really annoying, because I had just dealt at Top Trumps.

We pretended we had a playground in the clouds! After that, we took off again, and played more hangman, then it was time for a

snack. We had cartons of juice and three cookies each, and then it was time to land.

We never did get to play Top Trumps!

That night, we pretended we were going to posh Indian hotels with enormous cakes and swimming pools with water slides. amelie

YEAR 5 TRIP TO HINDHEAD

Year 1 Art: Looking At Monet The children have been looking at The Wild and Wonderful world through the medium of art. One artist who was famous for creating garden scenes was the impressionist painter, Claude Monet. After hearing about his life and artistic techniques, the children set about recreating one of his famous paintings from his garden in Giverney. To recreate Monet’s blurred painting effect, they used their fingers to dab paint onto their canvases. Can you guess which painting it is? Look out for the Year One gallery exhibiting their creations!

YEAR 3 PROBLEM SOLVING Year 3 love a problem solving challenge – some like to work independently whilst others prefer working with friends. They were successful solving the magic square today but the most important thing they learnt according to Amy was “Don’t give up!”

RESidEnTiaL T yEaR 6: RESIDENTIAL TRIP TO

Snowdonia This was our first venture to Snowdonia in September and the idea was to firstly build solid relationships between the form teachers and the senior pupils in the school at the start of this important year. Even more importantly it is to develop leadership skills which would be of benefit, not only to the children but to the school as a whole because the senior pupils within the school take on leadership responsibilities for the academic year. The trip was a tremendous success and, as ever, focussed on individual well-being, team well-being and environmental well-being. The word clouds show some of the ideas generated through our discussions but the teachers and children’s comments below speak volumes too.

Marcus Culverwell, headmaster The Year 6 children thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Snowdonia. The residential gave children the opportunity to work collaboratively in order to overcome the challenges presented to them throughout the week. After a long Summer break, the week-long trip presented the group with the chance to bond with their new teachers and classmates.

The activities were fun, challenging and required input from every member of the group. Gorge walking was one of the more popular activities, every child braved the elements to ensure they made the most of the activity. There were a range of activities available throughout the week which were always met with enthusiasm. The climb up Snowdon brought the group together, as the children were required to show their leadership qualities and encourage their team during the climb. tim austin, 6a Form teacher

Experiencing the wonders of North Wales with my new class was an incredible way to get to know them; their decision-making, their approach to challenges, their communication with peers and adults revealed far more to me that a first week of the school year spent in a classroom ever could.

Whilst away, the children wrote a daily blog which gave them an opportunity to reflect on what they learnt each day about themselves and the environment. Those who were initially apprehensive about activities were enthusiastically reporting how they would love to have the chance to do them again.

I think I have learnt a lot about how nature really effects your life and it is vital to a healthy life for me and other generations.

Today my group were really working as a team. We were continuously encouraging each other ….. we also learnt how to trust each other in difficult situations.

We all cheered and hugged and congratulated everyone for their achievements.

I really did not want to go all the way to the top but I faced my fears ….. and I saw the amazing view of all the mountains and it was beautiful.

We had a serious and interesting conversation about climate change ….. that really got me thinking.

Gorge walking was one of the best experiences in Snowdon. When I first stepped into the water, it was the coldest my feet have ever been! I tried climbing out but while I was trying I slipped and fell face first in the mud.

Mrs Salmon encouraged me to carry on. After a while we came to a waterfall and we had to jump into the water. At first I thought I was never going to do that in a million years but then I said to myself, “Why don’t I try the small jump?”. So I did and I felt so proud.

On our final day we climbing Mount Snowdon. There was a sharp bitterness in the cold! I enjoyed being part of a team and I worked with my friends to climb along the stretching rocky path. I think I was good at encouraging people to move a little faster as we needed to continue to move in order to battle the atrocious weather. The view at the top was amazing although there were quite a few clouds surrounding us.

Upper School Concert

We are learning about how different energies are produced. We have learnt how to wire a circuit to light up a lightbulb. We found out that a broken circuit will not provide the battery power to light the bulb. Learning about safety in the home was also a key part of our topic for example making sure not to overload plug sockets. isabella

Years 3 & 4 Dance I really enjoyed all the dances because they were upbeat and it was great to have a variety of performances rather than only music. I also really enjoyed going up on stage and performing in front of an audience. ella

Year 5 and 6 choir sang ‘Ring Christmas Bells’ and ‘Little Road to Bethlehem’. I was really pleased with how Ring Christmas Bells sounded because it was hard to learn and Mrs Glynn Jones said she wouldn’t do it again next year, and bottom line didn’t work! emmeline

Year 4 Dance

Year 5 sang ‘Winter Solstice’ which I liked because it was in cannon and it sounded like the winter. It sounded beautiful. Although, participating with the Drill Team was my favourite part.

I really enjoyed participating in the Boys Academy dance to ‘Santa Clause is Coming to Town’ because I liked the theme of Robots and how it was arranged as if we were teaching robot how to dance. harry

Year 1 Scavenger Hunt As an introduction to our Autumn term Combined Humanities topic of ‘The Wild and Wonderful World’ Year One went on a senses scavenger hunt to investigate and observe the environment around them. It was wonderful to hear the children’s already acquired knowledge about the flora and fauna, physical and human features and they thoroughly enjoyed collecting evidence that was on the ground to bring back to the classroom for closer scrutiny!

YEAR 2 SPELLING In Year 2, we have recently added a new stage to our spelling learning – an ‘explore’ stage where, before we take our spelling tests we explore our new sounds and the spelling patterns within it.

When we are exploring our new sounds we get to share ideas, investigate and pay lots of games to consolidate our learning – it’s great fun!

P U d n U Ro TEDDy bEaRS PICNIC aND bEES! Reception children all received a surprise letter from their class teddy bear at the beginning of the term, inviting them (and their teddy of course!) for a picnic! We quickly discovered our teddy bears’ favourite food was honey and promptly set about making honey sandwiches – Yum! Yum! This was followed by a visit from Mr Gallo, a local beekeeper who told us all about bees and how important they are. He even brought some real live bees with him! Thankfully these were safely contained and the children found seeing the bees fascinating and listened carefully to what Mr Gallo had to tell us.

gRaNDPaRENTS vISIT aND FLaPjaCkS We have also had the pleasure of being visited by our Grandparents. We loved having them in the classroom with us and they seemed to appreciate the sticky flapjacks we made, almost as much as we enjoyed making them!!

bISCuIT bEaR aND bakERy vISIT We have thoroughly enjoyed reading the book Biscuit Bear by Mini Grey and after half term, we ventured out to buy our very own Biscuit Bear from our local bakery. Once there we used the money we had brought and carefully carried in our pockets to buy our sweet treat. The children had a great time and really enjoyed the real life experiences this gave them, so much so we acted it all out again once we returned! Later, we made and decorated our own salt dough Biscuit Bears.

DIwaLI As part of our curriculum area “Understanding the World”, Reception have been learning all about the Hindu festival of Diwali.

The children had fun making diva lamps out of clay and enjoyed painting their lamps in lovely bright colours!

Year 1 Trip To Wisley Year 1 had a fantastic day out at Wisley Gardens on 1st November to support their topic learning this term on ‘The Wild and Wonderful World.’

The weather was amazing so the children were able to spend virtually the whole day outside using their senses to observe the flora, fauna and seasonal changes in the gardens. The children learnt even more about plants and the different types of trees and thoroughly enjoyed making crowns out of the Autumn leaves and other things they collected off the ground on their walk.

They were amazed by the sheer size of the Glasshouse and experienced the different climates within this setting which allow for the cultivation of a whole different variety of plants some of which you would not see unless you travelled to different regions of the world. The children were very excited with the idea of planting an acorn and many have already started sprouting!

YEAR 5 WORKSHOP: THE SHACKLETON EXPERIENCE On Monday 9th October 2017 Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud youth Theatre company came in to give Year 5 an amazing workshop about Shackleton. My favourite part was running through a blizzard, the workshop people threw fake snow in our hair it was an amazing experience and overall it was an awesome and interesting! The year 4 will love it when they hopefully do it.

On October 9th 2017 Yvonne Arnaud Theatre came to our school.

Year five and I went down to the sports hall. We played games like north, south, port and starboard.

Pulling a boat with one man on and five men pulling.

Also we played a game where you run under two sheets that are being flapped and then you run past someone holding a bag full of shredded paper and they throw it at them acting out a blizzard.

On Monday 9th October 2017 Year 5 had a tremendous experience from the Yvonne Arnaud theatre company.

First we started off by getting dressed into clothes that crew from Shackleton’s experience might of wore. Then we got named into jobs that the crew had to do, I was a third officer.

Did you know when Shackleton was running out of food for breakfast he looked at a biscuit, for lunch he sucked the biscuit and for dinner he ate the biscuit?!!!!

It was an amazing and an interesting experience, best workshop ever!!!!!

Year 5 Antarctic Expedition On the 9th October 2017 Year 5 travelled on an expedition to Antarctica. With 41 crew, 30 dogs and 13 ponies the ship was packed!

I got the job of an able seaman so when James and I climbed the rigging we got thumbs up from Shackleton. We sailed from Plymouth to Argentina from there we traveled to Antarctica. Sadly when we got there we missed Besal Bay and drifted away by 8 miles. Oh yes I forgot I to tell you what are ship was called, it was called Endurance.

When we drifted away we set up our ocean camp we built an igloo for the dogs but soon we abandoned ocean camp sadly we ran out of food for the dogs and had to shoot them. After that we set up patient camp. We had barely any food left so we had to narrow our food down to the bare limit. For breakfast we looked at a biscuit for lunch we sucked it and for dinner we ate it! At the end we had to run through a blizzard and got to safety! My favourite part was the blizzard. Next years Year 5 will really enjoy this.

TRIP TO CHâTEAu DE LA BAuDONNIèRE

noRMandiE At 5am on Sunday 6th August we set off by coach to Portsmouth, then Brittany Ferries to France, followed by coach again to the Château, arriving late afternoon. We had a brilliant week, everyone thoroughly enjoying themselves. By the end of the week, everyone was also a lot more confident speaking French. Let the children comment themselves: My favourite activity was the canoeing as we did different activities in our canoes on the lake. It was fun to work in pairs. I fell in! alexander, george, Matthew and henry I enjoyed how the instructors spoke in French as I really liked trying to speak French. I liked asking for things in French It was a great learning experience.

Orlaith and Ori I really enjoyed the food because I tried new things and enjoyed them. If we ran out of something, we went to the kitchen and asked for more eg ‘Je voudrais encore du pain, s’il vous plait!’ I enjoyed speaking French at breakfast and I can now ask for things in French at home. annis-Clara and Caitlin My favourite activity was aéroballe because it was exciting. I like basketball and trampolining which is basically what aéroballe is.

We had a tournament and I won! I loved it!

Billy, Byron, Luke and Oli I really enjoyed the market and then we went to the goat farm.

We could go in with the goats. The farmer let us try the goat’s milk. It was warm and I’m not sure if I liked it. He also let us taste some goat’s cheese. I bought some to bring home for my family. harry and thomas My favourite was the climbing wall. I reached the top and rang the bell!

Matthew My favourite bit was when we had the talent show at the end of the week. It was amazing. A group of us did a dance. It was so fun! sophia and Lexi The assault course was my favourite because we got dirty and cold.

Everyone got involved. It was the best fun I have had in quite a long time. I would definitely do it again!

CRACK CHRISTMAS The children in Kindergarten and Reception were unable to sit still with excitement as they retold the Nativity in a very wriggly way! The Wriggly Nativity saw dancing stable animals strut their stuff, camels bumping up and down through the desert and skipping lambs dancing around the manger.

CKING S CONCERTS school in this Christmas story needed decorating so Mrs. Potts, the school caretaker, along with her band of trusty mice took it upon herself to make some beautiful baubles for the bare tree that would help the children to remember the true story of Christmas. With snoring sheep, bassoon playing inn-keepers and Kings who relied on “cat-nav” to get to their destination, this quirky nativity bought the house down.

YEAR 3 ROMAN COLUMNS FROM CLAY I enjoyed making my Roman column because it was exciting to feel the clay and I thought our columns looked amazing!

Year 6 Macbeth Workshop On the 27th October, Year 6 went to RGS to be in an interactive version of the play Macbeth. It was really fun because you thought you were actually there.

The actors were loud and emphasised the key parts. I enjoyed how creative it was.

Joe On Monday the 27th of November, Year 6 went to RGS for an interactive remake of Shakespeare’s play Macbeth by the Young Shakespeare Company. It was a lot of fun to see how the actors creatively adapted the story.

Kiran Year 6 went to RGS to watch and act in a Macbeth drama production. Some people got to act in it (I played Malcolm). It was a fun experience and they acted it out in a way that 10 and 11 year olds would understand.

Phoebe On Monday 27th November, Year 6 were involved in an interactive performance from ‘The Young Shakespeare Company’ of the tragedy of ‘Macbeth’. We were all involved and had a crucial part in every scene. For example, some children played specific roles, whereas the entire year group created the atmosphere through sound

effects: the heath was created through humming for the mystery of magic, patting our legs to be the driving rain and howling and growling to represent wildlife.

Year 4 Maths Data Collection What fun we had collecting data for bar charts. We used stopwatches and tally charts to see how many star jumps, skips, push ups and other exercises we could do in a minute. We then put this into a frequency table and from this we then drew bar charts.

YEAR 4 WORKING WITH iPADS In Year 4 we have had a lot of fun on our iPads. Everyone was jumping with excitement as they heard we were getting iPads!!!

The first game we were allowed to play was Word Mania. We had to make as many words as we could in three minutes, our high scores were 1107 and 1556! Our year came 3rd in practice and first in round 1. We’re also in the final!

We managed to set up our email accounts and send each other an email.

We also love using our iPads in lessons such as Science and Combined Humanities. We have had an awesome time on our iPads, thank you for reading. sofia and erik

YEAR 2 PROBLEM SOLVING BEEBOT Clever Year 2 used their knowledge of positional language to program a Beebot robot. Each group needed to program the Beebot to visit each picture of the story of Dick Whittington in the correct order.

Sports Roundup CRoSS CouNTRy In September, we went to Lingfield school for a cross country race. Well done to Jayden in Year Five for coming first in his race and Buddy from Year Four who came second. We came second overall by the narrowest of margins with one point separating second and first.

It was a great effort by everyone.

FooTbaLL The Year 3’s had an amazing start to football at RSM, winning 12 matches in total. The Year 4’s continue to improve with 8 wins in the bag, this included a good performance at the Hawthorns tournament. The Year 5’s were exceptional and some players joined forces with Year 6 to compete in the Surrey cup. Although we were knocked out of the cup, we had a chance of silverware.

We went battling through the plate and got to the semi-finals but unfortunately were beaten by Aldro Prep School.

HouSE FooTbaLL To celebrate the end of an excellent football season the Year 3-6 boys and Annis took part in the inter house football tournament.

All of the houses played exceptionally well, showing excellent sportsmanship and teamwork. The winners of the Years 3&4 tournament were Malcolmson, with Searle finishing in a close 2nd.

In the Year 5&6 tournament the overall winners were Hobson and Malcolmson finished 2nd. Well done to everyone who played.

u11 HoCkEy TouRNaMENT IN EaST gRINSTEaD

On a bright sunny autumn afternoon, the U9A girl’s hockey team played their first tournament of the season at The Hawthorns School. Our first game was against St Georges Weybridge. They were a very well drilled squad and unfortunately we lost 5-0. We then managed two great wins against Micklefield and Hawthorns, well played girls. We had very two close matches against Danes Hill and FeltonFleet where we showed some great defending skills. Our last game was a hard fought and close game against Hazlewood where we managed to draw 1-1. This gave us 3rd position overall for the tournament on goal difference. Well played to the whole squad, great teamwork and perseverance throughout the whole afternoon. Thank you to Mrs Eveleigh and Miss Allan for taking us. sofia

u8 HoCkEy A huge well done to our U8 teams who finished their first season of hockey with a super match against Micklefield with the A’s winning 9-0, B’s winning 4-0, and C’s drawing 2 -2.

LINgFIELD u9a 7-a-SIDE HoCkEy TouRNaMENT On Thursday 9th November 2017 it was year 4’s U9A tournament at Lingfield College Prep. Our first match was against Royal Russell which we won 4-0. Then we played Caterham which we also won 2-1. Then we played Lingfield, which we won 1-0. Finally, we played Rose Hill which was definitely the toughest match out of all of them. It was tough because they are a very good side and we were really tired but in the end we managed to win 1-0. Everyone enjoyed it and played their best, Lizzy Fisher, Sofia McCartney, Emma Shipley and Sophie Davies played really well. Thanks to Lizzy Fisher who scored our winning goal!! When we had finished playing all of our matches it was time for a delicious tea and presentations.

We ended up coming in first place!! We all got a medal and we also got a shield. Thank you Lingfield for hosting such and exciting and amazing tournament and also thank you to Mrs. Eveleigh and Mrs. Walters for coming and coaching us, we all really appreciate it.
