The Evangelic Church The neo-Gothic Evangelic Church was planned by Ludwig Hoffstadt and erected in 1881. The protestant town church was built as one of the earliest and until today largest Protestant churches in southeast Upper Bavaria in at that time modern „neo-Gothic“ style.

The Salzmaierhaus

� Erected in the 15th century this building housed the Salt Works Administration until 1840.

In front of the building, a marble block sculpted

by Alfred Essler evokes the “Salzamtschreiber” (Magisterial Saltwriter).

A Historical Walking Tour.

Bad Reichenhall’s oldest church was documented as early as 1144. Its Romanesque church arches and the Gothic organ choir have been preserved. The church interior was remodelled in Baroque style in the second half of the 18th century. Next to the church, ran the old city wall.

This pedestrian zone was laid out in 1992 in the heart of a historic part of town. Original sections of the newly rediscovered town stream were integrated into the new town stream. ��� � � � � � � � � � � �� �� � �� �

Originally Romanesque, the St. Agidius Church was first constructed in 1159 and rebuilt in Gothic style in the 15th century. It is dedicated to Saint Agidius an anchorite and helper in need.

Agidius Square The square is flanked by the “Altes Feuerhaus” (old fire department) that now houses an adult education institute, a gallery, the municipal music school and a small theatre.

The “Old Town Hall” was built in 1849 by the architect Lucas, a student of the famous Gärtner, and decorated with frescoes in 1924. From left to right these frescoes portrait Charlemagne, St. Rupert, Emperor Frederick I and King Ludwig I of Bavaria.

They are accompanied by Charity and Justice.

Kitty-corner from the building is the “New Town Hall” a streamlined structure building in the style of the Inn and Salzach Rivers located.

In 1905 the Wittelsbach fountain was placed in the centre of the square (sculpted by Karl Koller, Munich), representing the four Bavarian State regions and Bavaria’s social structure.

A TOWN STEEPED IN HISTORY

850 years – a town steeped in history The roots of Bad Reichenhall date back very far down memory line. In 1159 Reichenhall for the first time was termed “town” (civitas). Moreover its 4000-year-old history of salt is noticeable all over the town.

This history is present at every turn in numerous buildings, roads and squares and nowhere else it can be sensed better than during a walk through the town. You will feel like on a time travel to the past. Feel cordially invited to discover the historic saline town and health resort on a walkabout.

The Old Salt Works and the Salt Museum For thousands of years Bad Reichenhall’s livelihood has been based on salt. After the devastating town fire of 1834 that totally destroyed the medieval salt works, King Ludwig I commissioned the architect Johann Daniel Ohlmüller to construct what is now referred to as the “Old Salt Works”. The central part of the salt works is formed by the main pumping hall and by the spring works chapel, a gem building in neo-Romanesque style.

Fourteen meters below in the main pumping hall the brine springs flow through marble canals. Still in operation today, a mid-19th century pump incessantly forces the brine to the surface through the main spring shaft built by Erasmus Grasser in 1507.

Across from the Old Salt Works is the former salt refinery administration building located – an important architectural monument. It was constructed in 1839 by the architect Friedrich von Gärtner in neo-classicistic style.

St. Nicholas Church Parts of the Parish Church of St. Nicholas, a three-naved Romanesque basilica, were repeatedly destroyed by fire and subsequently rebuilt.

The frescoes of 1862 above the altar are the artwork of Moritz von Schwind and depict the Holy Trinity and the four patron saints St. George, St. Nicholas, St. Corbinian and St. Pancras. Along with these the stations of the cross in the side naves are this artist’s sole remaining sacred works.

Predigtstuhlbahn The cable railway which was finished in 1928 is considered as the oldest originally maintained and perennial working cabin cable railway in the world.

Together with the historical mountain hotel it is the high-ranking engineeringly historical monument. In about 8 minutes and with a 5 cm strong wire rope a dodecagonal pavilion gondola floats to the 1614 m high crest of the “Predigtstuhl”.

The intellectual father of this construction is the inventor of the modern rope floating technique, Louis Zegg. Till the post war-period the area around the Hochschlegl was known as a popular skiing area.

Luitpold Bridge Mentioned in 1050 for the first time, the bridge since mediaeval times has been one of the most important passages across the Saalach. Built from 1888-91 and named after the Bavarian Prince Regent Luitpold it was seriously damaged by a floodwater in 1899. South of the bridge the relicts of the former log drifting facility can be visited. For the salt works a lot of firewood was needed. By means of the log drifting facility the wood was washed down from the mountains.

Saalach power station In 1914 commissioned and meanwhile protected, the hydropower station was originally used for the power supply of the newly electrified railway between Salzburg and Berchtesgaden. Till today the turbines and generators are originally maintained and deliver a power capacity of 40 million kilowatt hours. The barricade is located in Kibling while the main power station which is connected to the barricade through an underground tunnel is located in Kirchberg.

Kirchberger Schlössl In the sources of 1130 first mentioned as the archiepiscopal manor supplying Kirchberg Castle, the farmyard was extended around 1500 and rebuilt in baroque style in 1732. The amply passageway which connects the two halves of the building is typical for the estate built in the style of Inn and Salzach River.

Gruttenstein Castle

The medieval castle of Gruttenstein still includes the three-storey central building, a high Gothic construction with portions built in Renaissance style.

To the south, the second remaining tower – the Powder Tower (Pulverturm) – rises along the historical city wall.

The Ludwigstraße / Pedestrian Zone The 1976 opened and 2001 to 2005 newly formed pedestrian area is the shopping paradise in the heart of the city.

Upper Town The St. Sebastian quarter has preserved old house facades and the medieval defence walls of the 13th century. Florianiplatz is a typical alpine square surrounded by a majority of gabled houses with protruding saddle roofs. The neighbourhood is one of the town’s oldest.

The tower named after Saints Peter and Paul is one of fourteen ancient fortified towers.

The sources of the city wall lead back to the first half of the 12th century. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times and lost its importance not until 1809 when it proved to be helpful during a siege by the Tyroleans.

Theraphy centre of modern spirit After the demolition of a Grândhotel a municipal therapy centre arose under the architect Max Littmann, a late art nouveau building with the intention to offer all resort aspects of the city in one place. Main themes of the architecture are water and its healing effects.

The core of the therapy centre was formed by the so called “pneumatic rooms”.

In 2006 the reopening took place whereas the offers were adjusted to the requirements of the health sector.

In the sources of the 11th century first mentioned, the “Achselmannstein” was considered as a nobleman domicile with castle alike imprint through the late Middle Ages and the early modern times.

In 1846 after there was erected a new building in this place, a “brine and whey centre” opened – the basic unit of the today’s health resort Bad Reichenhall. The present architecture originates from the time between 1909 and 1911 as the hotel complex was built up in the style of the Italian Belle Époque to the first Grândhotel of the state health resort.

In this form it was one of the top ten hotels in Germany for decades.

The Minster and Monastery of St. Zeno The 12th century St. Zeno Minster is a three-naved basilica constructed in 100 years’ time during the Staufer era. Among its numerous architectural treasures one should mention the Romanesque doorway and the Lord’s Prayer in ancient German in the vestibule. In the Baroque wing of the monastery you can find a Romanesque cloister with a ribbed Gothic design.

It includes the Ludwigstraße, Salzburgerstraße and Kurstraße.

The Spa Facilities The Kurpark was laid out in 1870 by the landscape architect Carl Effner. The neo-Baroque State Spa Building was constructed by Max Littmann in 1900. In 1910 the court architectural advisor Drollinger erected the alpsbrine open-air inhalatorium Gradierhaus. It was built for the process of filtering salt. The structure is 160 m long, 13 m high and houses 100.000 bundles of blackthorn twings. In 1912 he built the Wandelhalle with its concert rotunda.
