PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As we leave the beautiful weather we had in October and ready ourselves for the busy holiday season ahead, I want to talk about some of the happenings going on now at RBCC. We just completed another amazing Lady Blue Hen Golf Tournament, with 9 colleges participating and, as hometown fate would have it, was won by the University of Delaware The tournament was a wonderful success due to the leadership efforts of Volunteer Coordinator, Rudy Blancke and our 65 Member volunteers, as well as our golf team and grounds crew. A heartfelt thank you goes out to these individuals for their hard work in putting on such a spectacular and successful tournament.

I hope you will enjoy seeing, as much as I do, the wonderful fall decorations around the Clubhouse that the Talon Tribe, under Andra’s creative direction, have put together to celebrate fall. So, as we shift away from our “high season” with many of our Members heading south for the winter, please know we will have many great Club activities for those of us nestled in Rehoboth to keep us entertained!

As many of you may be aware, the Board, Management and Finance Committee have been working diligently on an unexpected increase in this year’s projected budget deficit. Quite simply stated, our revenues were below what we expected and our expenses higher than projected, plus we had to make some accounting adjustments suggested by our new auditing firm. Click here to read John McCooey, our Club Treasurer’s, update on this for a more thorough explanation.

When facing this problem, I remembered another of Ted Lasso’s words, “There are two buttons I never like to hit: that’s panic and snooze.” The Club overall is strong and doing very well. I have complete confidence in our ability to get back on track due to the fact we (the Board and Management) are not snoozing and haven’t hit the panic button. Identifying where the problems occurred and carefully analyzing the data, allowed us to take necessary action to minimize the budgetary gap. There are broader issues the Board will need to continue to address, including

the financial challenges of having almost 20 Member categories, with only a little over 40% of Members paying full dues with operational dues well below industry standards. Keeping the membership informed, educated and engaged in any decision is a top priority.

Finally, I hope we have a big turnout for our first RBCC 5K Turkey Trot on Friday after Thanksgiving at 9am benefitting our own 1925 Eagle Foundation. Join by clicking here! Barry and I will be participating with all 15 of our kids and grandkids in this fun walk/run event so I hope to see you there. It will be the first kick-off event supporting the Foundation and is open to the community, so please join in and spread the word.

Happy Thanksgiving to All!

GENERAL MANAGER’S UPDATE

moved up to 143 from 148. So, for us, this is a head-scratcher that is pushing us deep into the survey comments trying to understand how to fine-tune in the off-season and beyond.

The summer-like temperatures in the 70s and even 80s for this time of year are something no one is complaining about, although let’s admit it, they took us by surprise. Unless you’re an avid golfer, tennis or pickleball player then this is probably something you’ve been praying for, and it can now be added to your list of things to be grateful for this year.

Being an election year, and a polarizing one nonetheless (but I’ll quickly move on from this subject ), you would think that is what would be on everyone’s mind around here, but instead, we’re trying to make sense of the contrasting events around us and the challenges they’re posing. Devastating hurricanes in Florida and the Carolinas while we've been begging for rain for more than a month here, is the first example that comes to my mind. Then, it’s the mixed results we received from the Club’s Annual Membership Survey, summarized on page 8, versus the updated Platinum Clubs ranking. Why does it seem to us like these two items contrast? Because, while the Club’s previous surveys tracked us with the 4th highest industry NPS (63 in 2023) and exponentially better than the industry average for private clubs (44), this year’s survey dropped RBCC to an NPS of 41. This indicates we’ve reached a year when it feels like we’ve hit a “plateau” in terms of the levels of satisfaction. However, on the other hand, the Club’s ranking in Platinum Clubs of America, which is the top 150 country clubs,

It could’ve been the fact that the survey was sent out while the leadership was working on clearly understanding this year’s budget deficit and the actions needed to correct the course. Or it simply could have been that the Members are developing an appetite for even higher standard for their membership experience which time and more analysis will tell. The Board and the Management Team continue to work on multiple initiatives that would align RBCC with the aspirations of the entire membership and implement more of the industry’s best practices, making sure that we continue to be the most reputable club of our area.

What doesn’t change is the Talon Tribe’s continuous push for better, and you’ll see this in all the Member events that are in the works for this month and December. Attending the events is the best way to show support for the Club’s most valuable asset…our staff. Reducing positions throughout all departments as one of the actions to close the deficit gap for this fiscal year was undoubtedly the hardest thing I did since my return, especially when everyone gave their best to deliver the must-have membership experience we promised. The offseason will be a time when we come together and make sure we strengthen our bonds and show genuine gratitude to the people of the

Talon Tribe, because they are the ones who make the Members’ and their guests’ club visits memorable. Without them, all our strategies will be just ink on paper, and sometimes we just take them for granted. I hope you will join me in thanking them for their hard work and dedication and remind them that they’ve made the right choice when they decided to become part of the Talon Tribe.

Wishing everyone a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving!

TALON TRIBE UPDATE

It’s the time of year for gratitude. I try each day to find three things for which I’m grateful and mark them down before turning into bed. Some days there is variety in my gratitude, but other days I fall back on my greatest hits: my husband, my children, and the community I’ve chosen to cultivate around me, including the Talon Tribe There are members of the Talon Tribe that I spend more time with than my husband; and they are some of the most genuine and caring professionals I’ve had the honor to work with. The respect and appreciation I have for each one of my coworkers is enormous and I have a feeling that you would agree with me.

I hope as we move into the holiday season together, you will remember the things that the staff of RBCC have done for you over the past year, whether it be to celebrate your birthday with you, to serve you a nice cold beverage on a hot day, to give you some pointers on the driving range or to encourage your back swing on the tennis courts.

In the next couple of weeks, you’ll be receiving an email communication regarding contributing to the Talon Tribe’s Holiday Fund. We are grateful to the RBCC Membership for making the holiday gift an annual display of appreciation to our staff and helping to make their holidays even cheerier.

FINANCIAL OPERATIONS

Since joining RBCC, I have been working diligently to help simplify the readability of Member statements and process to make payments. The statements now are broken down by spending per person on the membership account. The bottom of the statement and the top, now reflects the total amount due on the account. In the bottom left corner, there is a minimum left to spend where a Member can track their food and beverage spending for the fiscal year (April 1 to March 31).

You may access your statement at any time from the ForeTees App or Club Website. Statements are sent via email between the 1st and the 5th of each month. In order to avoid late fees payments must be received before the 25th of each month. This includes the Club receiving personal checks or bank checks by the 25th of the month as processing times can be delayed.

As a reminder from the September Board Brief, an announcement was made that "the Club will discontinue paying the processing fee for Members paying online with a credit card effective November 1." To date the Club has absorbed over $70K to provide this service to Members. The Club will be instituting a credit card processing fee of 3 percent starting in November. All recurring payment plans that use a credit card and were set up prior to November 1 will be moved to inactive . Members that want to continue to use a credit card after November 1, can do so by logging into the Member Website, visiting "My Statements," set up recurring payment and acknowledging the new fee. Effective at the same time, debit cards will no longer be a payment option. Members can still pay via ACH without any additional fee.

If you have questions regarding setting up a recurring ACH payment, please reach out to the Members Services Specialist Mary Veenema by calling the Club at 302-227-3811 extension 237.

MEMBERSHIP & COMMUNICATIONS

for 50+ years, I’d still love to know what your driving force was for joining RBCC and what has made you want to continue to be a Member. It is truly this information that excites me to learn and help continue to build lasting memories, connections and continue to drive loyalty like our 50+ year Members have done.

Celebrating Over 50 Years of

Betty Mann-Beebe

Michele Rollins

James Robert VanPelt

Robert White

While Mary and I were having a brainstorming session regarding membership retention and engagement ideas for the centennial year, we asked ourselves, “I wonder how many Members have 50 years of membership or more?” During this time, we were running reports on Member demographics, locations, and years of membership, and something shocking came across my desk.

Mary walked in and gave me a list of Members with 50 years of membership or more. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw that the list spanned across an entire letter size page. If asked at Trivia how many Members I thought would be in this category, I would have certainly gotten the answer wrong. So before reading on or counting the names to your right, what do you think?

I am not going to open up this next paragraph with the answer because that would be too easy. Instead, as we enter the month of November and associate it with Thanksgiving and gratitude, I have to say my heart became full. Seeing this number made me appreciate this group of people and their dedication and loyalty to RBCC over the last 50+ years! I’d love to have a conversation with each of them and understand what has driven their loyalty to RBCC over these years. Honestly, even if you haven’t been a Member

As we move into the Club’s Centennial, if you have a story, RBCC memory, pictures or any paraphernalia to share, I would LOVE to hear and see what you have to build it into the Club’s centennial year! Feel free to email me or call the Club to connect.

As a final reminder, the 2025 Handbook Listing has been sent to the membership. The form is available on the Club Website and available for pick up in the Clubhouse from Mary Veenema, Member Services Specialist. Handbook listings will be due no later than December 1 Failure to return the completed form could result in the publication of inaccurate listings. Also, if you have finished this article and not counted the names, I will not let you know the number is twenty-seven Members!

Enjoy your holiday season and we hope to see you at the Club soon!

Men’s Oaky Dinner

On Saturday, November 16, we will hold our 2nd “Men’s Oaky Night.” Big red wines, tomahawk ribeye steaks, bourbons and fine cigars are the stars. Our first event last March was great, and we are expecting a much larger crowd. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres kick-off at 6:30pm and the event price is $120 per person.

Prime Rib Night

While we are in full fall swing, there is still plenty to do this month with events and dining specials! Starting off with our weekly offerings, moving into November events, and a la carte dinner specials:

Bingo

Bingo has taken over Wednesday nights in October and will continue through April. Look for interesting burger features every Wednesday evening. Come for a cocktail and dinner at 5:30pm before bingo starting at 6:30pm.

Ladies Fall Wine Dinner

On Friday, November 8, the very popular Ladies Wine Dinner will be held. The culinary team has created a superb four-course seasonal menu paired with some great wines by Cosi. Bring friends and reserve your place for what will surely be a memorable evening. The welcome reception starts at 6pm and the cost is $75 per person.

Thanksgiving Cooking Class

On Thursday, November 14, Chef Carolyn will host her first “Thanksgiving Cooking Class” at RBCC. Her “Soup to Nuts” demo will give the attendees some new inspiration in preparing their feasts. This is overwhelmingly Carolyn’s favorite holiday of the year so bring a friend and enjoy learning tips and tricks for Thanksgiving menu items and more. The class will begin at 6pm and is $35 per person.

“Prime Rib Nights” have become our most popular Saturday night features. The Chef includes other specials along with the tender beef so mark your calendars and gather friends for the evening.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgivings at RBCC have gone through some logistical changes through the years and last year we have found our sweet spot Takeout meals have become popular and the a la carte component, with seating in all downstairs dining areas, had a great feel and vibe throughout the service. Check out the a la carte Thanksgiving menu priced per entree, the takeout options on the RBCC website, and make reservations to dine in with us or takeout!

Lobster Night

Last but not least, on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, we will offer another Lobster Night on the 30. There is a lot going on in November and surely an event for everyone.

topped with creamy burrata cheese, housemade pumpkin seed walnut brittle, and crispy onion straws. I could eat this salad every day!

Back by popular demand is the classic French onion soup and our slow-braised short ribs— perfect comfort foods for a chilly day.

We look forward to seeing you soon at the Club to enjoy these new flavors and cherished traditions. Thank you once again from all of us

on the RBCC Culinary team.

Greetings from the kitchen, and happy holiday season!

First, I want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all RBCC Members on behalf of the culinary team. We’re proud of our successful summer season and are thrilled to share a wonderful holiday season with you and your families. This November, we have an exciting lineup of traditional and fun events: a Thanksgiving Cooking Class, a Ladies Fall Wine Dinner, a men’s oak-inspired dinner, a "build your own pasta" night, and of course, our Thanksgiving celebration! You can find details about these events in your weekly Eagles Tracks email or on the Club’s events calendar.

We’re also offering new Holiday Catering Packages designed to meet all your needs. We hope you’ll think of the Club when planning holiday parties and family gatherings during this special time of year!

Now, a little about our menu: fall flavors are among my favorites, and I’ve crafted our à la carte dinner menu to feature both classic fall dishes and new, soon-to-be signature items. One standout is the crab-crusted Norwegian halibut, served on a bed of fresh pappardelle pasta with bacon, peas, and a red pepper cream sauce—a Member favorite! Another seasonal delight is our roasted beet salad,

Pat Mastrian, PGA Director of Golf

Normally I am writing to you in October and mentioning the crisp Fall air that has moved in bringing that feeling of the winter season to come. As I write this article, it is 80 degrees outside. Rain has been extremely hard to come by this year and long-term forecast (don’t hold me to it ) does not show any signs of improving. Many of our Members have embarked on their southernly travels, while others remain at RBCC to take advantage of this beautiful weather, not to mention, the fantastic course conditions we have! As I wrote last month, the staff is now beginning the preparations for 2025, an extremely important year at the Club. Our golf calendars are soon to be finalized and Alli has completed the Spring merchandise buy. We can’t wait to begin celebrating with all of you!

We still have plenty of time left this fall and winter to take advantage of some upcoming sales. The merchandise operations are currently soaring to the highest heights that the club has ever seen, with fantastic soft good and hard good offerings that Alli, Nick and the team have worked towards over the past year. Rounds remain level at all-time highs and the Golf Committee continues to work towards creating as much availability as possible. We continue to work towards providing Members with experiences to cherish with family and friends.

GOLF DEPARTMENT UPDATE

As the tournament season comes to a near pause during the winter season, we do have some fun holiday events planned. I am sure you have seen them advertised in Eagle Tracks. Upcoming events include the annual Fall Crawl on November 23 (cross country golf tournament) and the annual 12 Holes of Winter (12 holes showcasing a different format on each hole) on December 14. If interested, registration can be found under Tournament Info on the Club website.

I want to finish this article by thanking all our seasonal staff who will be leaving us this month. Our staff really enjoys working together and providing you with fantastic services. Nothing that the golf operation accomplishes can be done without everyone’s hard work.

Finally, to the membership, we hope you have a fantastic fall season and remember to come to the Golf Shop for your holiday shopping needs or just to say hello.

GREENS DEPARTMENT UPDATE

Another month and more weather discussion! Following on from last month, the drought continues and - not counting the extreme week of rain in Julywe are now over 10” below normal since May! Thankfully the temperatures have broken which takes a lot of stress off the turf and means it needs less water (and other inputs) to provide optimum playing surfaces across the board. The Member-Pro and University of Delaware Lady Blue Hen tournaments came with high praise from the players and organizers, which helped verify how well the course is doing. As the season winds down, so will the growth which is a good thing as the H2Bs have returned to El Salvador, meaning we are down to the winter crew. The slower growth lets us extend the time between mowings taking some pressure away from maintaining the current conditions with a limited crew. The H2B program has been a huge success for the Club. They are a huge asset, and we cannot wait for them to return next year.

This year we started using the USGAs GS3 golf ball. This specialized ball is equipped with sensors that help us gather precise data on various aspects of the greens’ performance, such as:

Green Speed: The distance the ball rolls across the surface from a fixed point.

Trueness: How straight the ball rolls without deviating from its line.

Smoothness: The quality of the surface, which shows how bumpy the roll is.

Firmness: How firm and receptive the surface is.

and keep the greens more consistent. The numbers are not really for comparison from course to course as there are a lot of variables but are great for comparison across a single property.

Currently it is difficult recording an accurate green speed measurement. Since there are not many flat areas (coupled with the longer roll as they are faster) it is difficult to get a proper reading; you must take the average of three rolls in two directions that have to be within 6” of each other. The numbers themselves are arbitrary, however by using the GS3 ball it consistently gives us “our” numbers to aim for.

We understand that smooth, consistent greens are key to a great round of golf, and that’s why we’ve been focused on improving the quality of the greens. I have mentioned before that we have implemented a combination of grooming and brushing to enhance all the fine turf surfaces. While the fairways and approaches have been straight forward as the main goal is to stand the turf up, on the greens it has to go further as ball roll needs to be taken into account too. While the green speed reading is currently high, they are not rolling perfectly. A perfect putting surface should reward a good putt but challenge a bad one. I don’t believe in silly green speeds where the ball rolls off the green (that’s just crazy golf), but they should be enough of a challenge to where you have to think about it and if it’s on line it should go in. To get there we need to remove more grain. Since the greens are old there are a lot of strains of bentgrass on them from fine leafed ones to coarse ones. They all lay and grow slightly differently so the ball can “hang up” when its rolling from one to the other, which slows or stops the ball. We have made huge inroads on it over the last month or so and we will continue as long as we can while the turf is still growing. There will be slight fluctuations in the surface quality as we move through the different processes, but the end result will be fantastic for 2025.

And that’s how we’re improving the greens!

The accompanying app stores the data which allows this technology to fine-tune our maintenance practices to ensure the greens are performing to a consistent standard. We are still finding “our” numbers for the optimum conditions for RBCC. Once we know this, we can then manage to those specs

We hope you enjoy the improvements and look forward to hearing your feedback! As always, we’re committed to providing you with the best golfing experience possible, and we appreciate your patience as we work through the drought and refine our course maintenance techniques.

Happy golfing, and we’ll see you out on the course!

The graphs that track the information provide a lot of insight into the performance of the surface. You can easily see when the fall aeration occurred by the big dip in greens speed and the decrease (shown by a higher number) in smoothness. You can also see that while there are jumps in the graphs the ranges are tight. For example, due to the stress in August, the greens were maintained at a constant level and the range is within 12” (a difference of 6-8” is unidentifiable to a player so quantifiably the speed is very consistent). From aeration the range increases and pauses as we tried different practices and made progress with them. Each time we paused to let the turf recover, the speed levelled out and we can easily see what practices work best to achieve our goals.
