It is hard to believe but here we are in 2024. It seems like yesterday when we were coming into the new Millennium of 2000 and wondering if the world was going to implode. How fast time flies and now we are approaching the 100th anniversary of the founding of Rehoboth Beach Country Club. As we look to the coming year, I’m reminded of “New Year’s Resolutions” and the work we are doing on the Board. Rather than resolutions, which seem easy to break, I would like to focus on my “intentions” as your President for the coming year:
To continue to build an atmosphere of hospitality, warmth, kindness, and cooperation in our RBCC community. Clubs are created to meet members needs and research has shown that internal interactions between members, staff and club leaders are of immense value which lead to member loyalty. Members who have a high degree of friendships, positive attitudes and behaviors tend to form strong loyalty toward their club. Continuing to cultivate a welcoming, friendly, trusting environment between members and staff will serve as a foundation in accomplishing my other intentions.
To address issues in Club governance which will be legally sound, prudent, and efficient. The Board of Governors has been through so many ups and downs over the years that the Bylaws have become cumbersome (now 45 pages where most top Clubs are 12-15 pages) and our Certificate of Incorporation (COI) is outdated and not consistent with current IRS requirements for a not-for-profit Country Club. To assist in remedying these issues we have appointed an Ad Hoc Committee of Club leaders who will work on the COI, and we’ve hired a lawyer specializing in Club Bylaws to work on revisions. We are hoping in the next several months to have changes to present to the membership.
To prepare for the future of RBCC, with a strategic and long-range plan addressing both the needs, wants, and wishes of the community. In the Spring, we will start holding Town Hall meetings, focus groups and educational gatherings to review the plan and identify the cost. A Strategic Plan is a fluid and changing process, as we integrate input from both our membership and Talon Tribe.

Sharon Covington Board President
To provide a fiscally sound approach to meet these needs, wants, and wishes. Of all our intentions in the coming year, this will require the most energy (and honesty) to help Members understand the critical challenges ahead. You will be hearing from the Board about the need for “capital dues” to fund the estimated $18M over the next 10 years needed to replace and repair existing Club assets we enjoy. This is separate from any “aspirational” wishes Members might have, such as an upgraded golf course, new fitness center, or expanded outdoor dining, all of which were identified in our Spring Member survey. Capital dues are used to fund things the Club is obligated to take care of for maintenance. Your current monthly “operating” dues only fund your Member experience throughout the year, covering such things as fluctuations in cost of food and beverage, staff wages and benefits, etc. Incurring long-term debt necessary to replace capital/obligatory requirements is expansive and reactive. You should know that capital dues are considered “best practice” in country club management and two-thirds of all country clubs charge capital dues, in addition to and separate from operating dues. Capital dues will be a critical need for our future fiscal stability.
As I think of these intentions, which are all interrelated, and potential challenges they present, it reminds me of another Ted Lasso quote:
"Taking on a challenge is a lot like riding a horse, isn't it? If you're comfortable while you're doing it, you're probably doing it wrong."
Challenges are never comfortable—they stretch us in ways we’re not use to. However, while RBCC has clear financial challenges ahead, I believe we have never been at a better place as a BOG, membership and Talon Tribe to take this on. And being an optimist like Ted, I have full confidence we can work together to achieve our goals this year!

"Little January Tapped at my door today
And said, "Put on your winter wraps, And come outdoors to play."
Little January Is always full of fun; Until the set of sun.
Little January Will stay a month with me And we will have such jolly timesJust come along and see" - Winifred C Marshall, January
t also means contented, carefree, untroubled, and satisfied. I chose to focus on the latter ones, because at the turn of the centuries, the Members, Talon Tribe, and the Club leadership need to be aligned in their vision, and their compasses need to all show the same true North when encountering such great milestones.
So, at least in my book, contended, carefree, untroubled, and satisfied are all goals for our Members and the Tribe. Hence, the surveys (the one in April and the one you are hopefully completing now), the Capital ReserveStudy and the strategic plan are all tools used to achieve the above-mentioned goals. To float in the state of mind of happiness, the leadership of the Club is committed to setting some ambitious goals and all your support is needed throughout this journey.
The Capital Reserve Study has shown that the Club will need over $15M for its obligatory capital needs over the next ten years. That means, we need that amount to service, repair, or replace the current asset list.
course on weekends being dictated by the lottery system which are all topics I have discussed in previous articles. Our current Capital Reserve has around $3M, thanks to the strong initiation fees collected during the COVID-era effect, so we are not starting this journey empty-handed. We are also free of the irrigation loan that only two years ago was $2.26M, and is now history. Let’s not forget we must fulfill payment of the $9M remaining of our renovation loan and your statement includes this reminder every month.
I've saved this information for January and February, when time allows you to have a good read by the fireplace if you stayed in the area, or between fun activities if you’ve migrated to sunny Florida for the winter season. It is also the time when the budget is approved for the upcoming fiscal year, and we are exploring all avenues of dialogue: the feedback channel on the website, directly to the club leadership, focus groups and town hall meetings, videos, articles and updates on the club website, and my favorite Coffee with C.
Happy New Year, dear Members! Thanks to you, we have closed another chapter in the Club’s history, and now we are entering RBCC’s 99th year of existence with the excitement of celebrating a whole new century in 2025. Whether you have recently joined or whether you have club stories dating back to the 50s and 60s (some of our Members do, believe it or not!), you each are entrusted with the stewardship of this beautiful place for its next unwritten chapters.
Just like yourselves, the Talon Tribe feels that responsibility equally as much, so when I wished you a “Happy” New Year, I was very analytical of the word itself and its meanings Sure, the most common synonyms are merry, cheerful, blithe, exuberant, euphoric, but
Additionally, the Club will also need reserves to fund aspirational capital projects. I purposefully categorized the capital needs by obligatory and aspirational not “needs and must-haves" because if we don’t prioritize aspirational needs, we could become stagnant thus affecting the storied history of our Club RBCC has taken that approach many times, most significantly when it decided to move from the downtown location with 9 holes of golf and a small quaint clubhouse, to its current location with added acreage and amenities, then growing into today’s record number of families calling it home. With over one thousand memberships in one hundred years, it’s time we open the dialogue and agree on the path forward, as this number seems to be close to the maximum capacity for the current footprint and amenities offered. Examples of this include parking becoming a challenge in-season, the pool feeling crowded on certain weekends and access to the golf
Coffee with C is every first Saturday of the month at 9am in the Clubhouse, where we’re having open conversations and opening cans of not necessarily worms in a relaxed and casual atmosphere. The next one is Saturday, January 6, and the following is scheduled for February 3. I hope I'll see you there in person or online on Zoom to answer your questions and take your suggestions.
Meanwhile, enjoy the Club’s offerings during these next few months, since the Tribe made sure there are plenty of attractions for our Members during this not-so-normal warm winter. As always, we hope to see you around the Club as you remain the reason we’re still looking at more fruitful years to come, so let’s all cheer for a happy, kind and prosperous 2024!
There has been a lot of exciting news coming from the Talon Tribe. In December at our quarterly all-employee luncheon, we celebrated the winner of the Quarterly Tribe Vibe Award and Talon Tribe Supervisor of the Year.
The Quarterly Tribe Vibe Award winner is Lyndsay Jackson who works in the Clubhouse Maintenance department. Some things her coworkers said about Lyndsay:
“She is one of the most positive and upbeat employees at the club. She is always smiling, pleasant and happy. She is an asset to the club, and I am glad she in part of our Talon Tribe.”
“Since the day Lyndsey started at RBCC she has been outgoing and welcoming. She has shown many of the Core Values, but the best part is inclusion.”
The Talon Tribe Supervisor of the Year was presented to Margaret Maggitti. Margaret is the morning Sous Chef who not only prepares food for the Membership, but also feeds the very hungry Talon Tribe lunch each day During peak season, she feeds 100+ employees between 10:30 and 11am. Not only that, but Margaret also participates in the Safety Committee and is on the Talon Tribe’s emergency response team.
Thank you, Chef Margaret and the culinary team for always fixing up the BEST employee lunches and accommodating requests. The Tribe is spoiled when it comes to our food offerings!

The last piece of excitement for the new year is Jerry Schreck’s transition from Director of Culinary Operations to Director of Food & Beverage. Beginning in January of 2024, Jerry will step into overseeing both the Culinary and Front of House operations. Jerry’s expertise in staff training and development will lend itself to his new role as he continues to elevate the Food & Beverage experience at the Club. Don’t be surprised when you see much more of him in the dining rooms, swapping the chef’s coat for a suit jacket.

Did you know that the Club can send upwards of 1,000 emails at a time when sending “bulk emails” such as statements? The vast number can cause email accounts to flag an email as “spam.”
In order to assure that you receive your RBCC monthly statements is to have the email address accounting@rehobothbeachcc,com saved in your contact list on your desktop, laptop and phone.
Another way you can receive your monthly statement is by visiting the “My Statement” section on the Club website under Member Central of via the ForeTees App. Statements are posted to your Member account by the 6th of each month.

As many of you know, Rehoboth Beach Country Club is committed to enhance the Club experience through the eyes of its Members. In order to do this, RBCC started the season with a membership survey to gauge the daily member experience, current facilities, services and amenities, and receive valuable feedback. Now with the winter season in full swing and 2023 behind us, we want to hear how we did in comparison to the beginning of the season. With the help of Club Benchmarking, another survey was sent on December 20 to all active RBCC Members and spouses from Club Benchmarking. Below are some topics you should know:
We want to hear from EVERYONE. Whether you have been a Member for one year or 35 plus years, we want to hear from you so that we can truly understand the Club's demographics and trends. Each adult in a two-person household will receive their own survey.
We are LISTENING.
The Board of Directors and Talon Tribe are genuinely interested in your experiences, insights, and suggestions. We want your honest feedback. Your survey responses will remain anonymous and confidential as they will be managed by the Club's outside consultants, Club Benchmarking.
You should have received an email from Club Benchmarking with a unique link to access the survey. The survey is organized by the departments of the Club. It will take approximately 15 minutes to complete, and the email will come from the Club Benchmarking consultant, Mike Morin, who will tabulate the results. If you have not received the survey email yet, please check your spam folder or junk folders. The sender is "Club Benchmarking." If you still do not find it, send an email to surveys@clubbenchmarking.com and be sure to include "Rehoboth Beach Country Club" as the subject.
This survey enables all Club Members to have a voice in the strategic planning of RBCC. Your responses will directly impact decisions regarding programming and initiatives in addition to helping the Board of Directors and Talon Tribe prioritize improvements that will be implemented over the coming years.
All surveys must be submitted by midnight on Sunday, January 7 to be counted in the results. The survey allows you to save your progress and return to the survey as needed. Instructions will be provided with the survey.
The Board of Directors and Talon Tribe hope to hear from as many Members as possible as your input is important to all of us. We want to thank you in advance for your time and effort in providing your valuable feedback.

Upgrading the offerings in food service at the Halfway House as well as the Eagles Deck pool kitchen are also points of focus moving into next season.
Two things that we will continue to build upon in 2024 are the diverse wine dinners we introduced the last two years and the very successful Sunday cookouts.
It was a great 2023 and the entire food and beverage team thank you for all your support throughout the year. That said, we can’t wait to get going with plans for next season. As you’re reading this, I have moved into an overall F&B supervisory role as Food and Beverage Director as of January 1. The goal is to work with Spaska to create an even stronger frontof-the-house team executing great Member events and managing daily operations. I will also be continuing to support Chef Carolyn and her team to continue bringing top-notch service and innovative menu items with the strong and passionate back-of-the-house group that has been assembled.
Looking into 2024, an area of priority is the Bayside Grill and Bayside Grill Patio concept introduced last year. We are working with the House Committee on making that a space that everyone will want to be at year-round. I always think about this famous quote when beginning a difficult task. “The hardest part is starting. Once you get that out of the way, you’ll find the rest of the journey much easier.” That is the philosophy we have for that space going into ’24. Last season was our first step. We are now taking continual steps to decide upon décor and offerings that will draw our Members and increase the overall member experience.
But before we get to the outdoor season keep an eye out for all the calendar events for January and February. The Leuta Wine Dinner will be on Saturday, January 20 and the 2nd Annual Monticello Wine Dinner will be on the Saturday of President’s Day weekend. A demonstration on “Soups and Stews” will take place in early February so there is a lot to still look forward to this winter.
See you around the Club!

As RBCC heads into the start of 2024, it is another year closer to its centennial and only one year away. The Hospitality Committee along with the Talon Tribe are hard at work planning a year of memorable events and experiences throughout 2025. Included in these efforts is the Centennial Club Book, entertainment, and unique touches to make the year more personal for all. If you have any Club photos or one-of a-kind memorabilia you’d like to share, contact Bethany Ackerman, Membership and Communications Director, by calling 302-227-3811 ext. 230 or emailing membership@rehobothbeachcc.com. Some examples of items that we are looking for are Club photos, awards, stock certificates and post cards. If you prefer not to donate the item, we would be happy to photograph the item for you. We may display donated items throughout the 2025 year.

If you’d be interested in sharing a Club story with the Centennial Club Book writer, we’d love to hear from you! Contact Bethany to set up an appointment with the writer.

Although the weather might be a bit chilly throughout the next couple of months, please remember that the Golf Shop will remain open year-round. We continue to stay stocked with merchandise albeit slightly less than we normally would have in anticipation for the new spring merchandise in March/April. If you need anything, stop by the Shop and if we don’t have it in stock, we are always able to order items for you. Also remember that we can be instrumental in helping to order bulk merchandise for parties or businesses. If you are ever in need of bulk orders, stop by the Shop and speak with one of the Professionals.
Happy New Year to all! With 2023 now a thing of the past we look forward to 2024 and making this year the best at RBCC. There are many exciting things that will happen in the coming months as we prepare for the 2024 season. The staff will be attending the annual PGA Show in Orlando, Florida at the end of the month. January timing puts us in place to purchase for late Summer/Fall of 2024. Alli & Nick have spent much of the 2023 fall season purchasing for spring/summer and that buy is now complete. As always if we find additional items at the show, we are not shy to bring them into the shop. Alli has completed a buy plan for the shop that we will follow in her absence this winter.
Throughout the months of January and February, we will use the time to deep clean many areas of the operation including the Golf Shop, Cart Barn and the area behind the Cart Barn. We are continuously looking at ways to make all areas of the Club’s property to the standard that our membership would expect. We will be constructing a new bag drop area this winter that will include a covered gazebo that our Tribe will welcome you from each day. We highly recommend utilizing the bag drop this year. Not only is this a service our staff is energized to provide, but also utilizing the bag drop area helps keep foot traffic out of the parking lot which is safer for everyone with how busy our parking lot can get in the height of the season.
We hope to be able to release some information pertaining to a revamped calendar of events for 2024 and beyond. The Golf Committee has been hard at work analyzing many various data points to help make the in season calendar the most impactful for everyone. The goal of the committee was to increase the opportunity for tee times on the sheet especially during the days that most of the membership is at the club (Friday – Monday). As we move through the winter season, we will give additional details of what this will look like.
Again, Happy New Year to the entire membership and we can’t wait to make 2024 the best year yet!

Keeping up pace of play.

As we ring in a new year, many of us start off with new year resolutions. As golfers, one resolution we can all share is keeping up pace of play while out on the course! Whether you are an experienced player or just starting out, here are a few tips to make sure you don’t fall behind while out on the course:
As a new golfer, it’s okay to play in a scramble format with your group, even if the format isn’t an official scramble.
You don’t have to be the furthest away to hit (as long as it’s safe.) Ready golf! Go directly to your own ball, even if it’s ahead, (as long as it’s safe.) Carry a few clubs with you when walking to your ball. When starting out, it’s okay to not putt out.
It’s okay to pick up in the middle of a hole and enjoy the outdoors and scenery – It’s okay to skip a hole and take a break.
Here’s to faster play in 2024! Cheers!

The work on the 19th hole has been completed and handed over to the RBCC greens department to finish. Our progress has been a little slow so far as the project at 5 tee became a little more involved so completing that became a priority before moving on to 19. The two big rainstorms that flooded the course before the holidays delayed progress also but, weather permitting, we will be concentrating on the 19th hole project in January. We will be working on cleaning out the bunker and rebuilding it first, and then move back towards the tees from there.
The tee box project is moving along nicely, but as I mentioned above, 5 tee ended up becoming a bigger project. Par three teeing ground should be maximized so that the tee markers can be moved enough to let divots recover. Due to the size and quantity of the divots, this is a bigger issue on short holes. Once we squared up the tees on 5, we found that the trees ended up encroaching on the right side of the extended tee area, so they had to be taken down. The space was then repurposed with the ladies and senior golfers in mind. A new tee box was added where the trees used to sit. This tee box now gives a clear path to the green without having to hit over the bunkers. This improves the playability of the hole for ladies and senior golfers. The beds were removed and sodded with fine fescues, which will add a more natural look to course and provide food and nesting grounds for the wildlife.
The tree work will start once the ground freezes as it minimizes damage from felling and clean up.
It feels like the leaf season is dragging on! The aforementioned storms made the course too wet to get the sweepers out but we will keep working around the weather and get them up Other than that, the course is slowing going to sleep for the winter. Coming from Pennsylvania, I am surprised how long the cool season turf is hanging on, but it is ready for the cold weather to arrive and be bedded down until spring.
As always if you have any questions, please email me.

Alan FitzGerald CGCS MG Superintendent

The second event will be held on Saturday, February 24 at Grey Oaks Country Club in Naples Florida. RBCC Member Bev Billingsley has kindly offered to, once again, host fellow RBCC Members at her beautiful club. We will participate in a tennis round robin event followed by dinner and drinks at the outdoor dining facility within the club grounds. Thanks to all who have already contacted me to participate and those who are assisting with arrangements and in making this event special.
I am back in sunny, south Florida and slowly getting setting into my newly remodeled home (that is a long story for another day)! I hope you and your family enjoyed a blessed holiday season and are prospering early into the new year.
I have been playing a little more pickleball than tennis this winter and very much enjoying some court time with new friends. I trust and hope, you are spending some quality time on a court nearest to you this winter!
I want to be sure everyone has the 2 winter events marked on their calendar as I am hopeful, we can exceed the strong attendance we have enjoyed in years past. As a reminder, our first event will be held on Friday, February 16 at the Delray Tennis Center to watch the Delray Beach Open Professional Tennis Tournament. We still have a limited number of tickets available for attendance to the tournament so please contact me as soon as possible to secure your seat for the “Game, Set, Pour” event at the Delray Open. Your ticket includes a seat for the evening session preceded by drinks and appetizers at the facility.
I have been working with our team to put together a 2024 calendar of events and a varied and packed weekly clinic and drill schedule. We are continuing to build upon the enthusiasm of our new facility and growing the offerings so that there is something for everyone at the Racquets Facility.
I hope I have the chance to see you in Florida before returning to Rehoboth for the upcoming season. It is hard to believe, it is already right around the corner.

When choosing a racket, there are three elements that affect power and control: head size, weight, and string pattern.
Larger Head Size = More Power; Smaller Head Size = More Control. 1 Lighter Racket = More Power; Heavier Racket = More Control. 2. Open Stringbed = More Power; Denser Stringbed = More Control. 3

The Health and Fitness Speaker Series will also be making a comeback each month featuring the Club’s fitness class instructors. Stephanie Sullivan, a Master TRX coach, yoga instructor and nutrition guru is up first Friday, January 19 at 12pm with “The Sweet Addiciton-unveling the bitter truth of sugar.” Following her on February 16 at 12pm, Lesslee Dolan, a certified personal trainer, nutritionist and the barre instructor will dive into “Practical perspective on losing fat, while gaining muscle- Body recomposition for 50 plus group.” She will discuss how much you should be training, what to focus on, recovery and more.
Want to add a fitness goal to your new year’s resolutions, but not sure where to start? I would love to help you! On the next page you will see the sessions, packages and pricing for personal training. I enjoy assessing your current level of fitness, movement and limitations and then giving new exercises and techniques to help reach your fitness goals.
I hope to see you in the Fitness Center in 2024!

Lesslee, a native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, made Delaware her home 14 years ago. After building a successful salon business, she made a decision that would change the course of her life. Feeling frustrated by the toll the “aging process” was taking on her daily life, she returned to school to learn all she could about the benefits of exercise and nutrition as one heads into their 50’s and beyond. Her goal was to live her best life and help others do the same!
Lesslee, an award-winning trainer, is affiliated with the International Sports Science Association. She sat on the board of International Sports Science for two years, and was featured in Oxygen, Shape and Womens Health Magazine. She has over 13 years of experience as a Fitness and Nutrition Specialist, focusing on clients over the age of 50. With her "down-to-earth" and fun-loving style, Lesslee customizes workout experiences that are challenging, results-oriented, lively, and fun!
Lesslee’s core expertise in Pilates, Yoga, and Barre enables her to create multidisciplinary classes, and workouts designed to help with strength, mobility, balance, and overall body toning.
