From the moment that Réhahn came to Vietnam, he was drawn to the natural beauty of the landscapes, the friendly people with their warrior spirits, and the ever-present history. Yet, he knew that this was just a snapshot of what Vietnam had to offer. With each subsequent visit and each photograph taken, he found that he desired more. He wanted to understand the deeper narratives that wound through every region and every family tree. He knew that within each person he met lay an individual story, which would create a different kind of experience.

One that would encompass both the wonders of the land as well as the essence of the people who inhabited it.

Dès l’instant où Réhahn vint au Vietnam, il fut attiré par la beauté naturelle des paysages, par ce peuple accueillant avec des âmes de guerriers, et par l’histoire toujours présente. Pourtant, il savait qu’il ne s’agissait que d’un court aperçu de ce que le Vietnam avait à offrir. A chaque visite et à chaque photographie prise, il réalisa qu’il désirait plus. Il voulut comprendre les récits plus profonds qui avaient marqué chaque région et chaque arbre généalogique. Il savait que dans chaque personne qu'il rencontrait se trouvait une histoire personnelle, qui créerait une expérience d'un genre différent.

D'un genre qui engloberait à la fois les merveilles de la terre ainsi que l'essence des personnes qui y habitent.

“Vietnam, Mosaic of Contrasts Volume III” is not only an atlas of Réhahn’s travels into the heart of the country, but it also reveals an evolution of the artist himself. When Volume I was published in January 2014, Réhahn dove directly into the unfamiliar. Even though he didn’t yet understand the language, the inspiration came from the joy of new encounters and new lands. Published two years later in 2016, Volume II marked a deeper comprehension of the culture and a lifelong connection to the people he photographed.

« Vietnam, Mosaïque de Contrastes Volume III » n'est pas seulement un atlas des voyages de Réhahn au cœur du pays, il dévoile également l’évolution de l’artiste lui-même. Lorsque le Volume I fut publié en janvier 2014, Réhahn plongea directement dans l’inconnu. Même s’il ne comprenait pas encore la langue, l’inspiration lui vint de la joie procurée par de nouvelles rencontres et de nouvelles terres. Publié deux ans plus tard en 2016, le Volume II fit preuve d’une plus profonde compréhension de la culture et de l’éternelle connexion avec les personnes qu’il a photographiées.

The 3rd Volume of this unfolding collection shows that the land can transform the man as much as man transforms the land. Within the pages of this book, alongside fine art photographs, you’ll meet the tribal people that Réhahn encountered during his 9-year trek through every province in the country to document all 54 recognized ethnic groups for The Precious Heritage Project. This series inspired the photographer to go beyond the artistry of his work and to think like an anthropologist, a historian, a geographer and a sociologist, in order to understand the depth of the history and traditions present in each individual culture.

Referred to as someone who "captures the souls of his models" (Wanderlust Travel Magazine, 2018), Réhahn is more than just a man behind a camera. Behind each click is a story, a culmination of an experience. His unique combination of fine art photography and documentary styles takes the viewer along on the voyage to catch a glimpse of authentic interactions with people, their smiles, their wisdom, their daily lives. Published in hundreds of articles in the international press such as BBC, National Geographic, and GEO, the artist’s photographs have become some of the most recognizable images of Vietnam over the last decade. In 2018, Réhahn was honored by Vietnam's Secretary of the Party Nguyen Phu Trong, who has since become the President of Vietnam, when he gifted the artist’s portrait of "Madam Xong" to French President Emmanuel Macron during an official ceremony to celebrate 45 years of friendship between the two countries.

Décrit comme une personne qui « saisit l’âme de ses modèles » (Wanderlust Travel Magazine 2018), Réhahn incarne bien plus qu’un homme se tenant derrière un appareil photo. Derrière chaque cliché se trouve une histoire, le point culminant d’une expérience. Vietnam’s national dress, the ao dai, consists of a long tunic over silk or cotton pants. It is slit up the sides to the waist, to create a softer line and allow for comfort and ease of movement.

L’habit national du Vietnam, le ao dai, est constitué d’une longue tunique portée par-dessus un pantalon de soie ou de coton. Elle est fendue sur les côtés à hauteur de la taille, afin de dessiner une ligne plus délicate et de créer un confort et une facilité de mouvement.

Students in Hoi An tend to favor simple white or blue fabrics, devoid of embroidery or embellishment, while office workers throughout the country wear ao dai on a daily basis for their company uniform. For special occasions such as Tết Lunar New Year, weddings and graduations, both men and women in all regions of the country wear a colorful array of ao dai styles ranging from simple cotton to silk embroidered with cranes, dragons or other significant motifs.

It is rare to go a day without seeing at least one example of this ever-present symbol of Vietnam’s living heritage.

Les étudiantes de Hoi An ont tendance à préférer de simples tissus blanc ou bleu, dépourvus de broderies ou d’ornements, tandis que les employées de bureau à travers le pays portent le ao dai tous les jours comme uniforme professionnel.

Pour les occasions spéciales telles que le Nouvel An Lunaire Tết, les mariages ou les remises de diplômes, hommes et femmes de toutes les régions du pays portent une palette colorée de styles de ao dai, du simple coton à la soie brodée de grues, de dragons ou autres motifs significatifs.

Each portrait in Réhahn’s Ao Dai collection celebrates tradition merged with modernity. The eyes of the women posed in these Fine Art portraits are often hidden behind the depths of their hats or facing away from the viewer as they go about their daily lives.

The portraits become less about the individual beauty of the woman and more about the details: the fluid lines of her ao dai, the geometric shape of her hat, and the negative space around her body. She is a vision that is utterly modern while still maintaining her connection to her ancestral culture. An allegory for Vietnam itself - a country with its heart firmly rooted in tradition while its spirit moves ever forward to the future.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF AO DAI IN VIETNAM Ao Dai have been worn since the reign of the Nguyen Dynasty, which dates back as far as 1744. During this era, Lord Nguyen Phuc Khoat, also known as Lord Vu Vuong, ordered a new style of clothing for both men and women, which featured pants worn under a long gown.

The garment was in fact inspired by the clothing worn by the Cham ethnic group, who occupied what was then the conquered country of Champa, currently Central Vietnam. The new garments were a way to show respect to the Cham and win over their support.

The ao dai’s enduring appeal likely has to do with its versatile shape and style.

UN COURT HISTORIQUE DU AO DAI AU VIETNAM Le Ao Dai se porte depuis le règne de la Dynastie Nguyen, qui remonte jusqu’en 1744.

Au cours de cette période, le Prince Nguyen Phuc Khoat, également connu sous le nom du Prince Vu Vuong, exigea un nouveau style de vêtement destiné à la fois aux hommes et aux femmes, fait d’un pantalon porté sous une longue tunique. L’habit puisa en fait son inspiration dans le vêtement porté par le groupe ethnique des Cham, qui occupait à l’époque les terres conquises de Champa, actuellement le Vietnam du centre. Ces nouveaux habits étaient un moyen de témoigner leur respect aux Cham et de gagner leur soutien.

La beauté éternelle du ao dai lui vient de sa coupe et de son style versatiles.

CHILDHOOD From the sweetness of first friendships to the wonder of play, these photographs aim to capture the essence of what it’s like to grow up in rural Vietnam. Each image is inspired by the secret world of childhood—a place where magic can overcome almost anything.

Many of the children in these portraits come from the diverse ethnic groups present throughout Vietnam. Some wear intricate tribal garments, others bask in the pleasures of sunshine, all offer up their joy for life without a second thought.

This diary of Réhahn’s journey through his new homeland presents the people, cultures and craftsmanship that make Vietnam such a rich place to visit. The photographer shares what he has encountered and learned throughout his first 3 years travelling in this country and shows a side of Vietnam that few people have the chance to witness.

Vietnam, Mosaic of Contrasts, Volume II is the second anthology dedicated to Vietnam with 145 new images. It is again a visual tribute to the people, both young and old, the exquisite landscape and the diversity of cultures in the country. This book takes you mainly to the North of Vietnam, an area which is notorious for its rough terrain, but famous for its rich concentration of ethnic groups.

I visited the north of Vietnam for the first time in 2011. I knew that I would see different ethnic groups but I was stunned by the diversity of the tribes, and the fact that they had all developed original cultures, dialects, customs and costumes.

Je me suis rendu dans le nord du Vietnam pour la première fois en 2011.

Je savais que j’y verrai différents groupes ethniques mais j’ai été stupéfait par la diversité des tribus, et par le fait qu’elles avaient toutes développé leurs propres cultures, leurs dialectes, leurs rites et leurs costumes.

I was suddenly immersed in these ancient cultures that were evolving in parallel with the globalised world. It was at this precise moment that I became filled with the desire to discover all 54 ethnic groups scattered throughout Vietnam. On a second journey a year later, I realised that these century-old cultures were slowly but inevitably dwindling, and it became clear to me that my new role as an artist would be to respectfully showcase and preserve that little known cultural diversity in order to foster knowledge and understanding.

J’ai soudainement été plongé dans ces cultures ancestrales évoluant en parallèle d’un monde globalisé. C’est à cet instant précis qu’est née ma soif de découvrir l’ensemble des 54 groupes ethniques répartis à travers le Vietnam.

Lors d’un second voyage l’année suivante, j’ai réalisé que ces cultures vieilles de plusieurs siècles déclinaient lentement mais inéluctablement, et il m’a semblé évident que ma nouvelle mission en tant qu’artiste était de respectueusement montrer et préserver cette diversité culturelle méconnue afin d’encourager le savoir et la compréhension.

Over the course of 6 years, I managed to locate 45 of the 54 ethnic groups, and on the 1st of January 2017, I unveiled the Precious Heritage Art Gallery Museum in Hoi An. This evolving cultural space displays giant portraits of tribe members, the stories of these encounters as well as traditional costumes, often offered by the chiefs of the villages themselves.

Some of these precious items are among the last original costumes of those tribes.

En l’espace de 6 ans, je suis parvenu à retrouver 45 des 54 groupes ethniques, et le 1er janvier 2017, j’ai inauguré le Precious Heritage Art Gallery Museum à Hoi An. Cet espace culturel en constante évolution expose une série de portraits géants de membres de ces tribus, les anecdotes de mes rencontres ainsi que des costumes traditionnels, souvent offerts par les chefs de village eux-mêmes. Certains de ces précieux articles font partie des derniers costumes originaux de ces ethnies.

In September 2019, after nearly a decade of research, I met and documented the 54th ethnic group and officially finished The Precious Heritage Project. Though the initial goal of the project has come to an end, I am still motivated by the quest to represent as much of Vietnam’s incredible cultural diversity in the museum as possible. I will continue to travel to meet other sub-groups as well as returning on my steps to see how tribes that I already know have evolved over time. This country and its people have become part of my precious history even as I’ve learned about theirs.

En septembre 2019, après près d’une décennie de recherche, j’ai rencontré et documenté le 54ème groupe ethnique et j'ai officiellement terminé le Projet Precious Heritage. Bien que le but initial du projet ait été atteint, je reste motivé par l’envie de représenter autant que possible l’incroyable diversité culturelle du Vietnam dans ce musée. Je continuerai à voyager pour rencontrer les autres sous-groupes ainsi que pour retourner sur mes pas afin de voir comment les ethnies que je connais déjà ont évolué dans le temps. Ce pays et ses peuples font désormais partie de mon histoire précieuse, bien que j’ai appris la leur.

The newest addition to the museum is a room that will truly take you on a voyage “Into the Land of Indigo”.

Explanatory texts in the Indigo Room will teach you about the tribe’s sustainable process for making this non-toxic “paint” as well as textile techniques that have been passed down for centuries such as hemp harvesting and batik design. These techniques are an integral part of the culture, heritage, and in some cases, livelihood of these ethnic groups.

Indigo-dyed handicrafts and full-color portraits of the incredible women who spend their lives creating heritage textiles are on display in the room. La première chose que vous remarquerez en entrant dans la pièce sont les murs peints d’un bleu profond. Cette peinture murale n'est pas ordinaire. Elle fut élaborée à partir du même colorant indigo que certaines ethnies telles que les Dao, Nung, Hmong et La Chi utilisent pour fabriquer leurs textiles bleus d’une richesse incroyable. Les textes que vous pourrez lire dans la Salle Indigo vous expliqueront le processus durable de fabrication de cette « peinture » non toxique ainsi que les techniques de fabrication textile transmises depuis des siècles comme la récolte du chanvre et le dessin au batik. Ces savoir-faire font partie intégrante de la culture, du patrimoine et, dans certains cas, des moyens de subsistance de ces ethnies.

NORTHERN VIETNAM Northern Vietnam is a breathtaking destination. Réhahn travelled to the furthest reaches of the country to photograph tribes such as the Cong whose cultural heritage was largely left behind when they migrated from Laos to Vietnam. He’s been sung to by the Si La, whose silver coin lined costumes are said to bring good luck. He’s met the Dao and the Pu Peo, another in language, skills or traditional costumes. The Northern region the beauty, colors and contrasts of these mountainous villages draw Réhahn back again and again.

Many areas of Central and Southern Vietnam where the ethnic groups live have remained inaccessible to foreigners. Réhahn has worked tirelessly over the years to obtain entry into these remote regions. One highlight was having the privilege of meeting the O Du, the smallest ethnic group in Vietnam at only 376 people.
