Learn How experience Changes the Brain Define Neuroplasticity Neuroplasticity is the ability of the nervous system to change in response to stimuli and can be seen from insects to humans.

How does it Work? The number of connections between neurons in the brain, called synapses, rapidly increases until we are three years old and then declines. The number of synapses we have as children has two primary causes. First, some connections will be strengthened while others are eliminated-- this process is called synaptic pruning. Second, some connections will become weak because they're only used occasionally or not at all. As adults, our brains don't possess the same plasticity that they did when they were children.

An example of Neuroplasticity Research has found that children with blindness have a reorganised brain. This means that their brain functions differently when compared with a child without this condition because of the lack of sight. It breaks down barriers in order to find alternate routes to get information across.

Methods to improve Neuroplasticity 1. Learning environments that offer plenty of opportunities 2. Sleep plays an important role in dendritic growth in the brain. 3. Regular physical activity has a number of brain benefits
