I

’m not a green activist by any means. I’m quite good about recycling as much as I can. I use the car less, eat less meat and walk a lot more than I used to. More of a ‘yes, I see what you mean’ kind of person. And the IPCC’s climate report last month – described by the head of the United Nations as ‘Code Red for Humanity’ – made for uncomfortable and worrying reading.

It gives a stark warning of a future where the world is hotter, there are more extreme weather events such as this summer’s devastating floods in Belgium and Germany, and to a lesser extent in the UK, and the searing temperatures and raging fires in Greece, Turkey and Canada.

The report says deep cuts in global greenhouse gas emissions could stabilise the world’s rising temperatures. It’s a vivid illustration of why decarbonising the way we produce and use heat and power is necessary.

Yes, the UK’s carbon emissions are not as high as those of some other global polluters and we’re definitely going in the right direction – but the emissions from our homes are not a drop in the ocean. And if we want to prevent our oceans rising any more, haven’t we got to do something?

Gas Safe Register has been contacted by gas engineers who, in some instances, have lost thousands of pounds after paying out to secure exclusive gas servicing work in their area that didn’t ever materialise.

We’ve been told that this is how these schemes operate: a company contacts you by phone or email, offering you exclusive and substantial guaranteed work in your postcode area.

firm, says it’s giving you a contract to exclusively provide landlords’ gas safety record checks and maintenance of gas appliances in that area.

But here’s the catch: you’ll be asked for a fee to secure the ‘exclusive’ contract, often around £2,000. Gas engineers have told us that they don’t ever receive any such work. When they try to contact the company, they can’t get hold of them – and they can’t recoup their money.

These companies pop up regularly and change their name frequently. Their addresses are often serviced offices and any phone numbers provided are not in service or go through to virtual assistants only.

If you believe you have been the victim of fraud, report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or go to www.actionfraud. police.uk. Reports of fraud and any other financial crime in Scotland should be reported to Police Scotland via 101. You can report scam text messages by forwarding them to 7726.

Remember: if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

What happens when you report illegal gas work?

Reporting illegal gas work when you find it can benefit your business finanacially as well as strengthening your own reputation. When you make a report, a Gas Safe regional investigations officers will aim to visit the property and inspect the gas work within 10 working days.

The officer usually spends two to three hours on site and makes a full report of their findings to your customer and HSE (or other bodies, where appropriate) within 10 working days of the site visit.

These reports are very detailed and record every gas-related defect on the work, as well as photographs and information about what needs to be done to correct the faults, to provide the evidence that the enforcement agencies need to take enforcement action, including prosecution.

The report may be disclosed to other agencies, if appropriate, such as local authority Environmental Health or Trading Standards.

Enforcement The HSE will review the report and decide on the most appropriate enforcement action, in line with its Enforcement Policy.

Enforcement action may result in: • a Warning Letter: the first stage of enforcement • a Prohibition Notice: this orders the worker to stop working on gas immediately • Prosecution: this may result in a fine and/or imprisonment of up to six months in the Magistrate’s Court and/or up to two years in the Crown Court or Sheriff Court.

Gas Safe Register does not have enforcement powers but it is responsible for investigating and

compiling the evidence of illegal gas work that is then used by enforcement agencies to bring prosecutions.

National Investigations Coordinator Ronan Howard says: “We take all reports of unregistered work seriously.

Where it has been alleged that specific gas work has been undertaken, we will always endeavour to visit the property, undertake an on-site risk assessment and refer our findings to the enforcing authority for consideration.

“Because we are the registration body, not the enforcement agency, we do not make the decision as to whether enforcement action will be taken against an individual or business.

“While investigations are ongoing, we are limited in

what information we can provide – but just because we cannot provide sensitive information, this doesn’t mean that action isn’t being taken.

Suspended sentence for illegal gas fitter who caused gas escape in care home A kitchen fitter has been given a suspended prison sentence after a range cooker that he fitted at a care home suffered a substantial gas escape.

Exeter Crown Court heard that on 24 December 2020, Mark Whitham, from Barnstaple, fitted the new gas cooker at the residential care home in North Devon after damaging the existing gas cooker while he was fitting out a new kitchen.

Over the next 24 hours, staff at the care home had problems using the cooker and contacted their usual Gas Safe engineer.

The engineer found a substantial escape from the gas supply to the cooker and reported the installation under RIDDOR. The HSE investigation found

eBay to halt sales of patch CO detectors eBay will remove all black spot/ patch CO indicators from sale or advertisement, after a request to do so by the All Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group (APPCOG).

APPCOG wrote to the online marketplace recently, requesting it “to take immediate action to prevent any further ads from being listed in the future. This is because these alarms do not work and give a false sense of security to home occupiers.”

After receiving the letter, the sale of black spot detectors was urgently reviewed by eBay’s Prohibited and Restricted Items team, in accordance with eBay’s Product Safety Policy. Alasdair McGowan, head of Public Affairs and director of Government Relations at eBay UK, has confirmed that all listings of black spot CO detectors will be removed and that eBay UK will: •U pdate its filters to flag these products if they are listed in future ads, and •C onduct manual sweeps to remove current ads for of black spot and patch CO detectors.

Barry Sheerman MP says: “The APPCOG parliamentary

members and myself are delighted to hear that any listings of black spot/patch indicator carbon monoxide detectors will be removed from sale or advertisement in accordance with eBay’s Product Safety Policy.

“I would like to express my thanks, and those of APPCOG, to Mr McGowan and the Prohibited and Restricted Items team for taking such swift action on this important consumer safety issue.”

Amazon has already taken steps to remove patch CO detectors from its platform.

The government plans to expand the requirements for CO alarms so that it will be essential for landlords to install an alarm with an audible or alerting indication in order to keep their tenants safe.

that Mr Whitham was not Gas Safe registered and did not follow the manufacturer’s instructions when he fitted the cooker.

Mark Whitham of Fallow Fields, Barnstaple, Devon, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulations 3(1) and 22(1)(a) of the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 1998. He was sentenced to six months in prison for each offence, suspended for 12 months.

He was also ordered to undertake 120 hours of unpaid work, and pay £2,000 costs.

Speaking after the hearing,

HSE inspector Simon Jones said: “Mark Whitham undertook gas work, which he knew he was not registered to do. In this case Mark Whitham’s unregistered gas work put the lives of vulnerable people at real risk from fire and explosion.”

BPEC helps Malawi maternity clinic The BPEC Charity has helped fund the installation of a new clean water supply to the Chikwina village maternity clinic in northern Malawi.

The clinic now has fresh water from a tap so that staff can clean equipment, wash laundry, prevent infection, and give new mothers and babies clean water for drinking and washing. Previously,

water had to be drawn from a borehole a 15-minute walk away.

“BPEC is delighted to have been able to invest in such a worthwhile cause, which is already having a major impact on the Chikwina community,” says Neil Collishaw, CEO at BPEC. “We know that access to clean water can literally save lives and made providing water and sanitation to the Chikwina clinic a priority,” says Dean Buchanan, trustee at international development charity Datum Foundation. “We were delighted to receive a life award grant of £1,500 from the BPEC Charity towards the cost and can’t thank them enough.”

‘Difficult winter ahead as Covid impact continues’ Covid-19 continues to cast a dark shadow on the industry and the effects will be felt long into the future, says Actuate UK, the alliance of UK building engineering services.

Construction output remains high but is threatened by the twin threats of a skills shortage and long Covid, both of which could have a devastating impact on a volatile industry this winter.

Actuate UK is warning the sector to be vigilant and follow good practice guidance to prevent long-lasting impacts on businesses. It adds that

businesses and the government should start planning now to avoid winter disruption.

Fiona Hodgson, CEO of Actuate UK member SNIPEF, says: “As the restrictions ease, Actuate UK urges industry to strike a balance when considering the health of its workers and the need to move the economy forward.

“This survey gives us grave concern about the long-term effects of Covid on our industry.

Building services are the lifeblood of all major construction projects, with heating, lighting, ventilation and digital infrastructure essential

to successful project delivery.

“Yet we continue to hear from members there are simply not enough skilled installers to meet current demand. With fewer apprentices being recruited during the pandemic, this has exacerbated the issue and we are deeply concerned this will impact on government targets and future projects.”

Andrew Eldred, of Actuate UK and ECA’s director of Skills and Employment, said: “The pandemic has had repercussions for training; the number of new entrants into the workforce has declined. The

difficulties of gaining practical experience, along with reduced numbers starting apprenticeships, have taken their toll.”

The spectre of long Covid throws another shadow, with recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showing that 385,000 people in the UK have lived with symptoms for a year or more.

Andrew adds: “While life may return to ‘the new normal’ for many in the coming weeks and months, for others, the long-term impact of the pandemic will remain a very real barrier to work.”

New head for HHIC

‘2 million green jobs by 2030’ says government A Green Jobs Taskforce has declared that every job has the potential to become green as the government sets out its ambition for 2 million skilled green jobs by 2030 and build back greener from the pandemic.

The government has welcomed 15 new recommendations from the independent Green Jobs Taskforce. Its Ten Point Plan reckons up to 90,000 highly skilled green jobs will be supported within this Parliament, and up to 250,000 by 2030. This includes supporting 60,000 jobs in offshore wind, 10 September 2021

40,000 new jobs in zero-emission vehicles, and 50,000 jobs in greening the UK’s buildings – all by 2030.

The Taskforce’s findings and recommendations on how the government, industry and skills sector can best deliver the green jobs and skills of the future include: • Publishing a detailed Net Zero Strategy and using policy to promote good green jobs, skills and competitive supply chains • Industry, the education sector and the government working together to ensure green

careers advice and pathways into good green jobs •B uilding on the government’s skills reforms to support people to work in the green economy.

The report assesses how the jobs market and the skills sector should adapt to support net zero, from training engineers and construction workers who are building offshore wind farms and nuclear plants, to the retrofitters who will make homes more comfortable and energy efficient, and car mechanics servicing electric vehicles and vans.

UK Energy & Climate Change Minister and co-chair of the Green Jobs Taskforce Anne-Marie Trevelyan says: “We need to invest in the UK’s most important asset – its workforce – so that our people have the right skills to deliver a green industrial revolution and thrive in the jobs it will create.”

Gillian Keegan, Minister for Apprenticeships and Skills and co-chair of the Green Jobs Taskforce, says: “We are focused on delivering the talent pipeline businesses need for green jobs now and in the future.”

New sustainable home centres for Daikin Daikin UK has opened Sustainable Home Centres in East Anglia and Essex, giving homeowners the opportunity to see Daikin’s air source heat pump technology. The centres also put people in touch with a trusted installer in their area.

Partnerships have been set up with East Anglia Renewables Centres, a sister company of local air conditioning and air source heat pump provider EOC Services, and with CB Heating in Essex.

For heating engineers, the partnerships mean they will be able to win projects and source products as well as accessing training and resources to help enhance the services they offer, says Daikin – and to ensure the long-term competitiveness of their business as fossil fuels are phased out.

Young Person in LPG is a new initiative that champions the talent of people aged 30 and under working in the industry. Awards will take place at the Liquid Gas UK Annual Conference in York in November in two categories – Rising Star of the Year, and Apprentice of the Year.

Government kick-starts the UK’s hydrogen future The publication last month of the Hydrogen Strategy recognises the important role that the low-carbon gas could play in heating our homes.

Here, we set out the highlights and take the industry’s temperature on what they think of it.

T

he government has fired the starting gun on the race to put hydrogen into 3 million homes by 2030 with the publication of its long-awaited Hydrogen Strategy.

The strategy recognises that hydrogen will play a critical role in decarbonising the UK’s heating, as well as in shipping, lorries and trains, suggesting that 20-35 per cent of the UK’s energy consumption by 2050 could be hydrogen-based.

Early next year, the government will launch a hydrogen sector development action plan that sets out how it will support companies to secure supply chain opportunities, skills and jobs in hydrogen. And it will consult on how to design a £240 million Net Zero Hydrogen Fund, which aims to support the commercial

deployment of new low-carbon hydrogen production plants across the UK. It will also consult on how to help reduce the cost of producing hydrogen, favouring a model similar to that which established offshore wind production.

Other measures set out in the strategy include: • Outlining a twin-track approach to supporting multiple technologies, including ‘green’ electrolytic and ‘blue’ carbon captureenabled hydrogen production, and committing to providing further detail in 2022 on the government’s production strategy • Working with industry to develop a UK standard for low-carbon hydrogen, giving certainty to producers and users that the hydrogen the

UK produces is consistent with net zero while supporting the deployment of hydrogen across the country • A review to support the development of the necessary network and storage infrastructure • Working with industry to assess the safety, technical feasibility, and cost effectiveness of mixing 20 per cent hydrogen into the existing gas supply, which could reduce emissions by 7 per cent.

But the future role that hydrogen could play decarbonising heat won’t be finally decided until 2026. The government says it’s working with the HSE and Ofgem on hydrogen heating trials, the results of which, along with the results of a wider research and development testing programme, will guide its decision. If these are positive, it says hydrogen could be playing a significant role in heating people’s homes and businesses, powering cars, cookers and boilers by 2035.

“We are optimistic that we will see hydrogenready boilers feature prominently in this autumn’s Heat and Buildings Strategy.”

“While we are working with the industry to bring hydrogen solutions for home heating, homeowners, installers and housebuilders should look to start their decarbonisation journey with heat pumps. We are eager to see

more clarity on heat pump funding and hydrogen within the long-awaited Heat and Buildings Strategy in September.”

However, the Environmental Audit Committee criticised the fact that funding and the definition of low-carbon hydrogen have still not been ironed out.

The committee chairman Philip Dunne MP said: “It is disappointing that only now are the necessary consultations being launched on how to overcome funding issues and how to define low-carbon hydrogen.

“These critical issues should have been ironed out in advance of this Strategy.”

First look at the hydrogen home Homes with appliances running on 100 per cent hydrogen are now open for people to see for themselves – and Registered Gas Engineer took an exclusive tour to find out more.

T

he semi-detached houses in Low Thornley, Gateshead, are the first chance for people to see zero-carbon hydrogen appliances in action.

The first thing that struck us is that it all looks so, well, normal.

Inside the two properties, built by a partnership of Northern Gas Network and Cadent working with the government, are familiar-looking new boilers, hobs, cookers, fires and even a barbecue. Boilers from Baxi and Worcester Bosch are up and running, along with fires, cookers and hobs developed by companies working on the Hy4Heat projects.

The showcase homes are intended to last for three years, although they could go on for longer, exhibiting the use of hydrogen appliances in a real-world setting.

Baxi and Worcester Bosch have both been working on hydrogen boilers for some time, investing in research and development to create prototypes with support from Hy4Heat, the government’s programme to establish whether if it is possible, safe and convenient to replace natural gas with hydrogen and

prepare for community trials.

The 100 per cent hydrogen boiler from Worcester, for example, is fundamentally its Greenstar 8000. The boiler flame is almost invisible and, because no carbon is emitted, is detected via UV. The only changes inside are the burner, which has been adapted for hydogen’s faster flame speed; the gas mixing valve, and the control board plug. And, of course, the only products of combustion are oxygen, water vapour and very low levels of Nox – lower than the amount given off by natural gas boilers currently.

In the event that the government gives the green light to running on pure hydrogen, these are the only components that would need to be changed in hydrogen-ready boiler in a process that should take around an hour.

Another advantage of hydrogen-ready boilers is the lack of disruption to the rest of the home during conversion.

Radiators will work as they always have done, although Martyn Bridges, director of Technical Communication and Product Management at Worcester Bosch, says work is currently under way

reviewing whether joints on 22mm pipework may need to change from compression to soldered fittings.

Worcester and Baxi have both created their ‘hydrogen-ready’

boilers as a natural stepping stone to 100 per cent hydrogen.

Jeff House, head of external affairs at Baxi, says: “By rolling out hydrogen-ready boilers it is anticipated that we can prepopulate a large proportion of the

UK housing stock, thereby making an eventual future conversion faster, easier and lower cost.”

On to the living room then, where a warm glow was coming from the balanced-flue fire. When a hydrogen-powered fire starts up, first there is a purge to disperse the internal build-up of hydrogen before ignition. The HyFires consortium of three manufacturers have also working been on open-chimney and glass-fronted models.

Finally, it was time to put the kettle on. Here the flame does look a bit different from the crisp blue flame we’re used to seeing on hobs. As they get going, the sharp flames look distinctly orange – this is because no hydrocarbons are being burned, we’re told, and the flame is very sharp because hydrogen is a light gas and so the PoCs lift vertically. As long as the tea tastes the same, that’s all good with us. n

What’s the difference?

Jeff House, head of external affairs at Baxi, says: “While looking the same and sharing many of the same basic components, there are some key internal differences to accommodate hydrogen combustion in boilers. When combusted, pure hydrogen reacts differently from natural gas, with a faster flame speed and different Wobbe index range, therefore requiring some adaptations. There is no carbon element present, so it is not possible to use an ionisation current for flame detection.

“As such, there are a number of adaptations to the internal gas-facing components. In addition, the combustion dew point of hydrogen is different from that of natural gas, which means we see more condensate produced – this is dealt with through the usual internal trap and discharge pipe method.

“But there are no visible differences to consumers.

The boiler looks, performs and operates almost exactly the same as a natural gas boiler.”

What’s the latest on hydrogen?

Registered Gas Engineer rounds up the latest developments and thinking about how hydrogen could help to decarbonise the nation’s heating.

A

MicroGrid at Spadeadam in Cumbria is helping gas distribution networks understand how to transport up to 100 per cent hydrogen.

The MicroGrid was purposebuilt by DNV and led by Northern Gas Networks (NGN) as part of the H21 project. It’s made up of around 1km of pipework of varying pressure tiers and diameters, which will link to three demonstration houses featuring hydrogen boilers.

It is being used to carry out

rigorous testing and make recommendations for any operational and maintenance procedures that will need to be updated for a hydrogen gas network.

Purging, venting, repairs and maintenance will all be tested to validate the suitability of existing procedures, as well as validating gas flow and pressure modelling software. Pressure and flow within the test network can be monitored remotely, and testing will continue for nine months.

Competence The newly published Hydrogen Competency Framework by Energy & Utility Skills sets out how to ensure that installing and maintaining hydrogen appliances will be completed safely by hydrogen-competent Gas Safe registered engineers.

It provides details of the skills and competencies that will be required for gas engineers to work with hydrogen, recognising that although they will need relatively few additional skills, they will need to increase their knowledge and understanding of hydrogen significantly.

The required skills, alongside IGEM’s interim Hydrogen Technical Standard, form the basis of the Hydrogen Transition Training Specification – which will enable consistency of training and industry recognition – and the Hydrogen Assessment Module, which will enable a hydrogen competence category to be added to Gas Safe Register.

Looking at the detail Ryan Mallinder, Northern Gas Networks’ H21 project manager, says: “While the H21 project has already established that it is technically possible to repurpose the gas network to transport hydrogen, the MicroGrid starts to look at the more detailed aspects of operating a hydrogen gas network on a day-to-day basis and any changes we need to make

from existing natural gas networks.

“As well as furthering our research into operations, the MicroGrid can be used for engineers to learn any new skills and competencies needed for operating a hydrogen gas network.

It can also be used by suppliers to develop innovative new solutions and any tooling that may be needed as we move towards 100 per cent hydrogen networks.”

Put consumers first A major new report by Cadent takes a consumer-centric angle on the path to the decarbonisation of the UK’s homes. Its Green Print – Future Heat for Everyone – says the ‘right’ answer to the transition of heating, including the role that hydrogen could play, will need to consider consumers’ wants and needs: • Ensuring they are central to decisions on the future of heat – this means mandating the changes that are needed and then allowing consumers to have their say about how that it delivered • Ending unnecessary ‘format wars’ – work should focus on where different technologies will be deployed and how to help consumers in the transition, rather than arguing about which technology will ‘win’ • Understanding people’s views on their heating and starting to engage with them early • Being upfront with consumers about how much transition will cost them and how it will be paid for.

Discussion about decarbonisation so far has ignored consumer behaviour, the report says in its foreword: “When consumers don’t feel confident, they don’t go ahead anyway, they simply don’t purchase.

“Decarbonising heat will only succeed if the market is designed for consumers. Significant barriers include cost, disruption, question marks about performance and a lack of clear process. Each needs to be overcome.”

Price promise on H-ready boilers A

hydrogen-ready boiler will cost no more than its natural gas equivalent, major boiler manufacturers have pledged.

Baxi, Ideal, Vaillant and Worcester Bosch also say that any hydrogen-ready boiler that was installed initially to run on natural gas will take no more than one hour’s labour to convert it to hydrogen.

change. “Consumers want to do their bit to reduce the impact of their homes and help deliver a greener future, but are concerned about the cost of some low-carbon technologies.

This price promise from the Big Four ensures that consumers will be able to access an affordable low-carbon heat and hot water solution.”

The price promise will force many industry experts to rethink their models, says Mike. “The Committee on Climate Change,

which advises the government, assumed that a hydrogen-ready boiler would cost £100 more than a natural gas boiler.

“This is another example of British companies leading the way on net zero. The manufacturers have been very clever in using existing components and technologies to keep the price of hydrogenready boilers down. What’s more, hydrogen-ready boilers will work in the same way as natural gas boilers, with no

changes required to pipework, radiators or the installation of a water tank.

“The boiler manufacturers have developed a boiler that works; they support a 2025 mandatory roll-out of the technology and now they’ve found a way to keep costs down. The Big Four boiler companies compete ferociously against each other, but they have come together for the benefit of UK consumers and the good of the planet.”

David Roberts was checking the gas supply pipework to an old fire point and found this gas fire isolation valve in situ. He made safe by removing and capping the supply to the fire using an appropriate fitting.

Ralph Gregory’s customer said they had insulated their condensate pipework but their boiler still wasn’t working.

Ralph could see why.

The wall to this property had been chased out to accommodate the boiler chimney and plume displacement kit, as found by Garry Coppard, who made safe.

Mark Warner’s customer had to agree that their water heater was beyond repair. Mark isolated the appliance in accordance with IGEM/G/11 and has now replaced it.

Chris Bonner’s photo shows the air intake duct of a boiler chimney completely frozen because of a dripping overflow pipe from the toilet cistern in the flat above. The problem and the cause have both been rectified.

Scott Barnfield was on a routine maintenance inspection when he saw that the chimney had rusted through the air intake duct of the boiler’s chimney, exposing the flueways. Scott made safe.

Derek McGuire was changing a sink and noticed a smell of gas.

The hob had been fitted using plumbing pipework.

Derek refitted it correctly and re-routed the electrical cables at the recommended safe distance from the gas supply.

Steve Williams found the source of a reported gas escape from this joint under the floorboards: 8mm pipework feeding a gas fire had been pushed into 10mm pipework and soldered.

Steve replaced the pipework.

John Vanes and Naim Aziz spotted this plumbing fitting used as an isolation device to a gas fire while they were carrying out a landlord’s gas safety record check.

The supply to the fire was disconnected and capped upstream of the gate valve using the correct fittings.

When Doug Forbes unearthed a wasps’ nest inside the boiler, he went beyond the call of duty and removed the nest without any additional costs to his service so that his customer was not ‘stung’.

When Ross Booth was asked to find out why a strange smell was coming from the fire, he soon saw that the chimney had been blocked by a bird.

Gas safety on boats Gas safety on boats is a specialist but important area for those gas engineers who work within the field. Here, Gas Safe Register Technical Officer David Tickle gives an overview of the standards and outlines the guidance on safety, flues, tightness testing and regulators.

T

he standards that generally apply to leisure craft and narrowboats used on canals and inland waterways in the UK are BS EN ISO 10239:2017(1), which applies to LPG systems on small craft and PD 54823: 2016(2), which covers the design, commissioning and maintenance of LPG systems.

The maximum length of a narrowboat in the UK is 70ft (21.95m), and so the scope of the standards applies to leisure craft up 24m long. The principles and guidance can also be applied to a domestic houseboat longer than 24m that is permanently moored or used for partial navigation of a river such as the Thames or Norfolk waterways.

Tightness testing New installations: Any new pipework – including any

additions to an existing installation – is required to be tested initially using air as the test medium at a pressure of three times the normal working pressure. For propane, this would be 111mbar.

This is a similar approach to carrying out a strength test in commercial installation testing procedures.

Ongoing maintenance: Testing procedures using LPG should be used in the following circumstances: • Whenever work is carried out that may affect gas tightness • If a gas escape is suspected • Before re-establishing an existing gas supply.

Bubble testers/gauges: Boats, yachts and any other vessel manufactured after August 2008 must incorporate a simple means of tightness testing into the LPG system before the installation is

used (for example, after the exchange of cylinders). This could be a pressure gauge or a bubble tester. For existing vessels manufactured before August 2008, the installation of a bubble tester is down to the vessel owner’s personal choice.

Note: Gas Safe Register inspectors carry out a tightness test on installations in line with the relevant standards using a pressure gauge.

Cylinder storage LPG cylinders – whether full or empty – pressure regulation devices and safety devices must be stored in cylinder lockers or housing, and secured to prevent movement that is expected in the course of marine service.

The craft and any such storage areas shall be designed

to allow any escaping gas to drain/vent at a low level outside the craft, noting that gas is heavier than air.

There should be no potential sources of ignition in a storage compartment or locker and any electrical devices must have ignition protection in accordance with ISO 8846(3).

Regulators and OPSO control The regulator to be fitted inside the locker must be suitable for its application and able to deliver the correct pressure for the connected appliances. Boats, yachts and other vessels also require an over-pressure shut-off (OPSO) device to be installed to prevent uncontrolled pressure increase in the low-pressure side of the LPG system.

and leisure craft and most existing regulators/ OPSO devices are suitable.

However, the engineer should confirm with the regulator or OPSO manufacturer that they are suitable for the environment in which they will be used. Not all devices are suitable for marine use, and salt water can affect their safe operation. Suitability for purpose should also be considered and checked for appliances and flexible pipework.

Pipework materials Only solid drawn copper or drawn stainless steel shall be used for rigid pipework supply lines.

Jointing methods shall be metallic in construction: they can be brazed, hard-soldered, cutting ring-type fittings, compression fittings or manufacturer-specified fittings, such as pliable corrugated stainless-steel tube fittings.

Hoses and hose lines The materials must be suitable for LPG and able to withstand the stresses and exposures of a marine environment.

•H oses shall be kept to a minimum practical length and shall not be routed through an engine compartment.

•H oses shall have permanently attached end fittings.

•T hey shall be a continuous length and not be subjected to tension or kinking under normal use.

• Hoses used for an LPG supply line shall have no joints from within the cylinder compartment to the appliance, or accessible isolation valve located near the appliance – except where metallic supply piping is connected to flexible hose connecting a moveable appliance such as a gimballed stove.

Shut-off valves Each LPG system shall be equipped with a manually operated main shut-off valve located in the high-pressure side of the installation. This valve may be the cylinder valve or incorporated in the pressure regulation device.

A dual-cylinder installation shall be fitted with a manual or auto changeover device and fitted with non-return valves.

These are in addition to the cylinder isolation valves.

A shut-off valve shall be installed in the low-pressure supply pipework to each appliance. If there is only one appliance fitted, the cylinder valve may be used for this function if it is located near the appliance. A remotely operable solenoid valve located in the cylinder housing is also

The solenoid can be fitted to the high or low-pressure side of the installation. The solenoid shall be closed automatically in the event of electrical actuating energy failure or loss.

Appliances Only appliances suitable and specified for use in a marine environment shall be installed.

If the appliances are used or second-hand, they must be in a safe working condition and fit for purpose, and the manufacturer’s installation instructions must be available.

They shall be installed in accordance with the appliance manufacturer’s instructions and fixed to the craft to prevent undue stress on any pipework connecting the appliance.

All appliances must be equipped with a flame supervision device and clearly labelled to indicate the type of gas on which is it is designed to operate.

Flues shall be sized and routed

In the hierarchy of standards, BS EN ISO 10239 is the one that is referenced most frequently. The prefix BS EN means it is the UK version, written in English, of a European harmonised standard; while BS EN ISO is an international standard that has been adopted by Europe as a European standard. A company manufacturing a boat or craft to sell abroad would need to comply with this standard as a minimum.

When an international standard is written, it must take in the views of an international panel of members from around the world. Sometimes there are compromises and differences from what you might expect to see when compared with other UK gas standards.

British boat builders will often refer to PD 54823:2016, which is controlled and maintained by BSI, as well as BS EN ISO 10239. PD 54823:2016 is a guidance document written to complement and reflect the requirements of BS EN ISO 10239.

It mirrors the minimum requirements of the international standard and expands on the level of detail about how work should be carried out. to ensure complete discharge of the products of combustion outside the vessel. Areas to be avoided are below canopies or areas that can be obstructed by an accumulation of water.

The flue system shall not have any dampers fitted and must not terminate within 500mm of any refuelling point, breather vent from the fuel tank or fuel system, or within 300mm of an opening window, door, port or ventilation grill.

The flue terminal shall be of substantial construction and fitted with a guard.

Owner’s manual The leisure craft/boat manufacturer shall provide an owner’s manual and will include with it instructions for use of the LPG system, any relevant instructions for the appliances, safety advice, guidance and safety check requirements. ■

Boat Safety Scheme Being a member of the Boat Safety Scheme permits the engineer to complete work on a leisure craft or boat that does not come under the Gas Safety (Installation & Use Regulations) (GSIUR) 1998, such as a leisure craft or boat that is used for personal use only. If the boat is hired out, used as a time share, shared ownership or a floating business such as cafes or shops, these fall within the scope of GSIUR. This requires that anyone contracted to work on the LPG system on a vessel in scope must be competent in LPG on boats and Gas Safe registered.

screw, the scope of GSIUR includes carrying out an LPG tightness test. Therefore, on a leisure craft or boat in scope of GSIUR, examiners who are not Gas Safe registered can only confirm gas tightness using one of the following methods: • Using a bubble leak detector, where fitted and correctly located, or • Observing a tightness test carried out by an LPG boats-qualified Gas Safe engineer.

Note: All other types of work, such as adding or replacing an appliance, require the engineer to be Gas Safe registered and competent in LPG on boats.

Safe isolation: what are the rules?

How can gas engineers achieve safe isolation and why do they need to do so? Paul Wilson, UK & Ireland sales manager for Martindale Electric, answers some of your most frequently asked questions.

W

hen it comes to gas safety, you are rightly expected to be more than just competent; you should be experts in your field. But there are plenty of other safety-related issues that you also have to be aware of. One of these is becoming ever more prominent: electrical safety.

But just being aware of issues around electrical safety is no longer good enough; you have to have both the knowledge and competence to safely isolate the electrical supply to a gas appliance that uses electricity.

What is safe isolation and why is it necessary?

Electricity is the cause of approximately 1,000 accidents at work every year – many more incidents inevitably go unreported – and 16 per cent of all workplace fatalities are linked to electricity.

With modern gas installations and appliances requiring more electrical connections than ever before – making up to 15 per cent of installation work – gas engineers are at greater risk from electricity. HSE provides clear guidance that live work should never be undertaken where there is the option to work electrically dead, and so establishing an effective electrical safe isolation procedure is critical to keep you safe.

The procedure involves de-energising the relevant circuits, isolating them properly before you start any work and, just as importantly, proving that they are electrically dead. The only exceptions allowed are when fault-finding on the installation, in which case appropriate care must be taken at all times.

What are the rules regarding safe isolation and how have they changed?

For newcomers to the gas industry, safe to touch, safe

isolation and proving that a gas appliance is electrically dead are already part of the training. The important change comes from recognising the increased risk that gas engineers face.

It means that all Gas Safe engineers must have the technical knowledge and competence to undertake safe to touch, safe isolation and proving electrically dead procedures before starting work on any gas installation/ appliance that has a connection to a 230V electrical supply.

This has been in effect since July 2020 and, by July 2025, all gas engineers will be required to self-validate that they have the knowledge and competence to safely isolate the electrical supply to a gas appliance that uses electricity; it could be as simple as signing a declaration stating this.

How can safe isolation be achieved?

Wherever possible and practicable, it is vital that gas engineers should work on dead circuits. Ensuring that you are not exposed to danger when working on or near live electrical systems requires a combination of effective safe isolation procedures and equipment that meets the latest standards, including HSE GS38 guidance notes(1). Failure to use the right equipment can result in a circuit remaining live – and the consequences can be fatal.

Take the time to identify the risks and introduce steps to ensure that all equipment is electrically safe before you start work.

Proper work planning and using the right tools for the job will help you to avoid incidents.

How can I be sure a circuit is actually dead?

Locking off the circuit correctly is an important step in the procedure, but it’s not enough to assume that the circuit is subsequently dead because a particular isolation device has been placed in the OFF position.

Although the circuit may be locked off, the neutral conductor can become live if an energised load on another circuit is connected to it.

And it’s not uncommon for circuits to be mislabelled, which can be particularly dangerous because it provides no certainty that the correct circuit is actually locked off.

proving unit to prove the circuit is indeed dead. While this may sound obvious, we know from experience that there are still far too many instances where engineers might try to use a known live source to test a voltage indicator.

The problem is that the known live source may only light some of the LEDs on the tester, whereas a proving unit will ensure that all the LEDs on all ranges are working, eliminating any uncertainty.

A further issue is that a known live source may not be conveniently available, increasing the risk that the voltage indicator is not actually proved to be operating correctly.

What equipment can I use?

You can comply with the standards by using fail-safe voltage indicators and proving devices that have been engineered specifically with safety

When choosing a voltage detector that complies with GS38, make sure that it is made to BS EN 61243-3.

It should be designed without batteries or switches – which could lead to false indication – and the voltage level readings should be clearly visible. It should also be durable as, let’s face it, equipment gets knocked around.

Look for a unit that is robust to prevent it getting damaged in a tool case, and that has heavyduty finger guards and doubleinsulated cable.

voltage; in other words, avoid using multimeters, as recommended by HSG 85.

A multimeter measures multiple electrical properties, such as voltage, resistance and current.

The problem is that they introduce the potential for human error, making it too easy to select the wrong range. In addition, they rely on battery power; if the batteries are flat, then a false “dead” reading will be given on a live circuit. The position is similar with

non-contact voltage detectors; while these are frequently used to detect live cables, they cannot reliably prove dead or confirm the safe isolation of a circuit.

You may want to consider investing in complete safe isolation kits, which bring together all the necessary equipment to prove dead and lock out the circuit being worked on. These kits generally feature a GS38 industry standard voltage indicator, proving unit and locking off devices in a combination carry case, which also helps prevent accidentally leaving any of the equipment behind. ■ www.martindale-electric.co. uk/product-category/safeisolation-voltage-indication

It’s time to challenge Most Brits have never had a female tradesperson working in their home. But with the industry facing a growing skills shortage, what more can be done to encourage women to consider a career in the trades? Registered Gas Engineer look at some of the latest initiatives and speaks to women about their own experiences.

S

eventy per cent of Brits have never had a female tradesperson in their home, according to a survey commissioned by Baxi that highlights the lack of female representation in the trades.

But even though so few people have used a qualified female tradesperson, 94 per cent of homeowners say they would completely trust them. And just under one-quarter (24 per cent) of women polled said they would feel safer using a female tradesperson.

There are no official figures for how many women work as heating engineers, or in other roles within the industry, but estimates suggest the number is very low. The GMB Union estimates that just one in eight construction workers are women1, while Direct Line for Business says there were 33,000 active tradeswomen in 2019 – with 73 per cent of them working as builders.2 But there are signs that times

are changing: Baxi’s research found that 70 per cent of homeowners would actively encourage a female relative to consider a career in engineering.

Managing director Karen Boswell says: “Our survey confirms that homeowners are happy to see female plumbers and gas engineers, yet there remains a critical lack of tradeswomen.

“With the industry facing its biggest change since the introduction of the gas boiler, this would be an excellent time to improve female representation.

We will be doing our bit to employ more women in engineering and management.”

Jess Queenan, a Baxi customer support engineer, has been a qualified gas engineer for six years. She says: “I have a career and a wage that I’m proud of. It would be great to see more women getting into it… hopefully we’ll be breaking through some boundaries over the next few years and making [women engineers] the norm.”

Jess’s view is reinforced by independent gas engineer Rachel Griffiths, who says: “There’s not a single obstacle I’ve come across as a woman plumber that I needed help with [or] couldn’t do because of my gender.”

and went straight into the industry after gaining her degree in Computer Aided Engineering.

She says she wasn’t encouraged to work in engineering at her school, as it was considered a career for boys. But family and

new initiative that’s working hard to encourage more women into the trades is the national Register of Tradeswomen, set up in March 2021 by Hattie Hasan. Hattie created Stopcocks in 1990 – a national company of women plumbers and heating engineers – and since then, she and her partner Mica May have championed the role that women can play in the trades.

Hattie received an MBE in 2020’s New Year Honours for services to women in the heating and plumbing industry.

The register is open to women across all the trades, and in time 32 September 2021

they hope to have hundreds of fully vetted tradeswomen of all types, based all over the country.

The register has been set up as a community interest company, meaning it’s not-forprofit and all monies raised are fed back in, and initiatives are designed to encourage more women to join the trades.

Spread the word Hattie and Mica are aware of the need to train more tradeswomen – and tradesmen – as the UK battles with a growing skills shortage.

The register is looking to set up training courses for women who would be interested in learning a trade.

“It’s pre-college level training,” Mica says. “Enough to help teach people how to fix taps and toilets, and to give them some experience with tools and plumbing in general. It’s great experience to help boost their confidence, especially if they are looking to go to college to learn more skills.”

Initially the training is aimed at teaching a skill to women and survivors of abuse, but Mica hopes they can roll it out on a much larger scale in future. They are currently seeking sponsors to work with them on converting a vehicle into a flexible mobile training centre, travelling around the country to run basic trade training courses.

Mica says: “These courses are meant to be a taster, because people are contacting us saying ‘how can I find out if I’m interested in this work when I’ve never had the chance to try?’

This way they can give it a try in a non-threatening environment, to see if it’s something they’d like to pursue further.

She says: “Companies are taking steps to become more inclusive, and challenge stereotypes. I feel lucky to be pursuing my career at a time when women are becoming more visible, but there are still times when I’m seen as less knowledgeable or competent than my male counterparts, and these perceptions still need to be challenged.

“Encouraging women in to get involved starts with good representation. We need to shout about the women who are already in the industry and the fantastic work they do.

“This is particularly important for children and young people, who can see from an early age what a real person working in the industry looks like.

“It’s important to show the breadth of careers available in the industry, and how there is something to suit all skills, interests and career goals.”

‘Women have a vital role to play’ Northern Gas Networks (NGN) is also encouraging more women to explore a career in the gas industry. The most recent intake for its engineering apprenticeship programme saw a 20 per cent rise in the number of offers being made to female applicants, quadrupling the company’s female engineering workforce.

Annie Thompson from Leeds began her career at NGN in an administrative role, but was promoted to operational technician at the NGN gas holder in Leeds after completing a course run by training provider Develop.

She says: “I’m on site every day in my hard hat and high-vis, and I make sure that everything is in place for the contractors to do their job safely. I ensure that all the engineering work runs smoothly and to a high standard.”

NGN has established a Diversity and Inclusion Strategy within the organisation, and is also a business partner for Solutions

for the Planet; an organisation that brings schools and businesses together to encourage all pupils to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and to think about how science can provide solutions to the challenges of sustainability.

Growing influence Viessmann is determined to recruit more women. Its Women’s Influence Network (WIN) aims to positively influence cultural change so that both women and men are perceived more in terms of their specific strengths.

Men are welcome to be part of

the network, which has more than 100 active members. Initiatives include networking events, seminars, a mentoring programme, and improvements in childcare provision as well as information on maternity and paternity leave. The Network hopes to work with the Viessmann Foundation to speak to young people in schools about opportunities in the heating industry before gender

Emma-Louise Bennett is a customer relationship coordinator based at Viessmann in Telford.

As a WIN member, Emma wants to encourage interest in the industry from as many different people as possible.

She says: “The heating industry is currently suffering a severe skills shortage [and] a large section of the Gas Safe Register will be retiring in the next 10 years. It’s essential that the female market is tapped into.

Working in heating can be very well paid if you are in the right job and there is no physical reason why a woman can’t be a heating engineer.”

A real shift in support for women Melissa Puryer is the Viessmann area business manager for the south-west of England; the face of Viessmann for engineers and merchants in the area. She joined Viessmann as a graduate with a degree in English – the first entrant on a trial graduate recruitment scheme.

Melissa says: “There have been times when I’ve gone into a merchant or met with an engineer and got the feeling they were trying to ask particularly technical questions to prove I didn’t know the answer. This has driven me to improve my technical knowledge as I do enjoy proving some of them wrong.

“I do think it’s easier now for women to join the industry, and 34 September 2021

“You can see a real shift in support for women as engineers on social media,” Melissa Puryer, Viessmann area business manager I’ve noticed there are more younger people and female apprentices being considered by engineers. You can also see a real shift in support for women as engineers on social media.”

But Melissa says the industry needs to do more to raise awareness of the jobs available.

“You have to know someone who does the job or you wouldn’t know how to get into it,” she says.

“It would be amazing if there had been a session at school where women came in and talked about their jobs and what the opportunities looked like. Although you see plumbers driving around town, not many people know what the job entails.”

The industry is changing Sarah Hobbs began her career in 2001 working for a local merchant and is now business development manager (south) for Resideo.

“I had always been drawn to more technical hobbies, so finding a job I could really get my teeth into was ideal,” she explains.

“There were not many women in construction when I started out, and when I was behind the trade

counter, people tended to head to my male colleagues for answers rather than asking me, but thankfully this is not as prevalent now.

“If you are willing to prove the

doubters wrong, you can certainly get there.”

Sarah also wasn’t encouraged at school to consider a career in the trades. She says: “There was much more talk about admin roles in the late 1990s when I was starting out, so these were the type of opportunities presented to the girls in my class.

I knew that wasn’t what I wanted, but I had to search for other routes myself.

“To some extent this is still the case. Even though the job roles are out there, it still doesn’t feature widely on the radar unless a family member or friend is already in the industry and can offer inspiration and advice.

“Encouragingly, there has been much more emphasis on engineering and STEM subjects within schools, but that tails off when it comes to plumbing and heating. With the skills gap looming, we need to take the opportunity to break this cycle and present the industry as diverse, attractive and exciting, so that more women and men consider it as a long-term career choice.” ■

Supporting off-grid customers and installers to meet the decarbonisation challenge Life after lockdown is certainly looking greener.

With the pandemic having sparked a noticeable shift in attitudes towards the environment and the importance of nature, it is no surprise that we are seeing a growing demand for sustainable solutions that can reduce carbon footprint and, in turn, help consumers save money.

Inherently, though, making the move to lowcarbon heating for rural, off-grid homes has proven difficult due to the associated complexities and high costs – acting as an obvious deterrent for the customer and installer alike. This, however, is changing with the arrival of BioLPG, a direct, drop-in, hassle-free, sustainable replacement for conventional LPG. Here, Karl Bateman, National Specifier Manager at Calor, advises on the growing opportunity that BioLPG offers installers operating in rural settings.

One unlikely consequence of the Covid crisis is that it has brought the plight of the planet to the fore. With national lockdowns leading more people to spend time outdoors and appreciate the importance of nature, the pandemic has seen the emergence of a more ethical, more eco-conscious consumer.

According to a recent report, 81 per cent of us are more concerned about the environment now than a year ago.1 A separate study2 reveals that 65 per cent

sustainable purchases.3 British householders recently admitted they would be willing to pay £3,654 more a year for sustainable items on top of their existing household outgoings.4 On a wider level, the UK government has asserted the importance of a green-focused recovery to the pandemic that tackles the climate change crisis. Sustainability issues will also be high on the agenda ahead of the United Nations COP26 summit. Part of this

Cue the rapid acceleration of green technology uptake. It’s estimated that as many as 60 per cent of consumers are now making more environmentally friendly, 36 September 2021

will centre on the urgent progress needed to reduce carbon emissions from home heating, which contributes a significant 14 per cent to the UK total alone.5 The result is a huge opportunity for installers to offer heating solutions that help their customers to improve their energy

efficiency, reduce their environmental impact and get their homes ready for the future.

The rural challenge When it comes to treating the 8 per cent of UK homes that are situated in rural settings and off the gas grid, though, the heat decarbonisation task is traditionally a complex one. This is because the nature of Britain’s rural building stock makes it harder for these properties to transition to lowcarbon heating, compared with those in urban areas.

While hydrogen is a possible solution for those on the gas network, it can’t be stored easily or transported off-grid. Heat networks work better in more densely populated areas, and so these are unlikely to play a major role in the countryside.

This leaves heat pumps and biomass.

Biomass has air quality issues, and woodchip pellets need to be handled manually and delivered frequently. Heat pumps generally require good levels of home insulation to heat effectively.

But rural homes are hard to insulate.

Lots have solid walls, 78 per cent are detached and 47 per cent were built before 1949, many much earlier. Therefore, the

We currently offer our BioLPG as a blend of 40 per cent mixed with 60 per cent conventional LPG, to provide 38 per cent carbon savings compared with heating oil. We aim to supply 100 per cent renewable energy products by 2040.

reality is that an electric heat pump alone may not keep occupants warm enough.

What’s more, homeowners may end up with bigger energy bills than expected due to the energy level needed for heat pumps to work effectively and keep them warm.

This is why, understandably, some installers have been reluctant to work on low-carbon projects off the grid. A recent survey7 among members of Calor’s Boiler Installer Scheme revealed that 68 per cent were concerned about how the decarbonisation of heat is to be implemented in these homes. We want to keep boilers It is estimated that the typical upgrade cost for such homes could reach over £30,000 compared with a national average of £9,000.6 And 63 per cent said their customers would prefer to lower their carbon emissions by keeping their existing heating system and boiler, but using a more sustainable fuel they can ‘drop in.’

Fan-diluted flue systems Fan-diluted flue systems may be used to disperse products of combustion in high-rise buildings.

Here, Barrie Church looks at some of the questions he receives on proving air flow at the correct rate when flow volumes are variable.

I

n recent weeks, I have received several queries regarding the safety of interlocks on fan-diluted flue (FDF) systems using variablespeed drives (VSDs) on multiple boiler installations. FDF systems are used when it is impossible to get the chimney to high level, for example, in a high-rise apartment block. They dilute the products of combustion to a safe level that does not cause low-level environmental issues.

Without the correct suction conditions under all boiler loads and necessary air-flow interlocks, the system can be dangerous because products of combustion will not be drawn away from the boiler chimney/flue.

Unstable combustion There are many problems with using VSD control with fan-diluted flue systems. The main issue is that the design must maintain the correct ‘range’ of suction conditions on the primary flue header, just as it is required of a chimney. These conditions must be interlocked with the operation of the appliances. This means that the first thing to do is find out from the appliance manufacturer the end points of these conditions. Too much or too little can lead to unsafe or unstable combustion.

Unfortunately, many appliance manufacturers are unable to provide this information and you may need to rely on the experience of the fan-diluted flue designer, or, better still, go to a manufacturer that can provide the information.

It’s vital to ensure that there is as much draught control as necessary in the appliance connections, which depends on the space available as well as knowledge of the appliances.

Under some wind conditions, the interlocks may prove OK without the fan running, which illustrates that you should always prove that the fan is running.

The inlet air system can be blocked by all manner of things, from crisp packets to snow and leaves – and even sheets of hardboard. The fact that the suction conditions have been met does not always mean that there is a flow. Paddle flow switches can be unreliable and, at very low boiler demand, might not be good enough to ensure safety.

Differential pressure switches 3across attenuators or inlet grilles or fans could be applied. But even with the correct interlocks in place, nothing beats good regular maintenance to ensure safety.

to guarantee safety under all boiler operating conditions.

inlet damper is not usually of a balancing type and is generally left fully open. In most cases, it would be better if this inlet damper is installed between the boilers and the fan so that it can be used for balancing the system against the fan duty.

maintenance by those who understand the design of the system. Adding fixed balancing dampers in various parts of the ductwork is essential, with all dampers having at least 25 per cent cutaway openings and rigidly locked into position.

It could affect the air flow into the burner and, depending upon the types of balancing dampers that are fitted, affect the flue gas passage to the exhaust grille.

best to have separate systems, even if both are VSD-controlled.

Where dilution air is extracted from the plant room, the ventilation must be increased substantially if it is by natural means, such as louvres, because it has to be based on at least 2.0m/sec jet (1.0m/sec face) velocity.

Where the ventilation is mechanical, the supply must be interlocked and able to provide enough to cover both the dilution air requirement and combustion air.

Condensate The last point that I would like to make relates to condensate.

The design information in the standards relates to noncondensing boilers: however, the

air flow and temperature conditions for the design need to be dramatically changed for condensing boiler systems, whose waste gases can be like a fog when used with FDFs. Vertical plumes have caused numerous 999 calls and horizontal plumes across highways have the potential to cause serious accidents.

The plume may not be a problem if the outlet is in an inconspicuous location, but it can be mitigated by entraining more dilution air so that the flue gas becomes unsaturated. However, this can increase the size and cost of the system substantially.

Other issues •C orrosion issues with the use of the proper grade of stainless steel for system

longevity are often overlooked on grounds of cost.

• The handling and removal of the condensate is also a big problem, and this may get worse as the concentration of hydrogen in natural gas increases.

• Large damp stains on exterior walls by grilles are not acceptable – choose a better type of drip-free joint.

• Condensate and dust will collect on the linings of the duct system and especially on the fan assemblies. This means that maintenance access is even more important than with non-condensing systems.

• Where different speed set points are configured to match selected boiler loads, it may be necessary to include multiple differential pressure switches, each monitoring the different boiler load configurations.

Why zoning matters Changes in the way we live and work have highlighted the importance of advanced controls that enable customers to zone their heating systems, writes Chris Ingram, founder of Continal Underfloor Heating.

M

any household budgets are tighter than ever due to the impact of the pandemic, and homeowners are always looking for ways to make their money go a little further.

Utility bills are rising, with the price cap for default domestic energy deals raised to cover rises in the wholesale costs of gas and oil. Around 80 per cent of the energy used in a property goes towards providing heating and hot water, so it’s an easy place to start when trying to reduce household bills.

Switching energy supplier is one way, but upgrading heating control systems to make sure their heating is as efficient as possible is often the quickest and most cost-effective way to improve efficiency and so bring down costs.

For years now, manufacturers have been pushing the importance of advanced controls, and yet 15 per cent of homes with gas central heating still do not have a basic thermostat1 – let alone sophisticated modern controls.

Revisions to Building Regulation Part L, due out later this year, are designed to encourage more properties to improve their heating controls.

From April 2022, it will be mandatory in England and Wales for each room in new-build properties to have its own temperature controls. Existing homes that do not have this level of control will need to have them fitted when their boiler or heat source is replaced.

For underfloor heating (UFH) systems, that means fitting a thermostat in each room. This will

monitor the temperature in that room, or area, sending data back to the wiring centre to ensure that each part of the property will maintain the desired temperature.

Get into the zone Fitting individual room temperature control as part of the UFH system also gives homeowners the opportunity to go a step further and introduce specific heating zones, and this can boost heating system efficiencies significantly.

A multi-zone system divides the property’s heating into specific areas based on their usage and requirements, for example: kitchen, office, bedroom, and lounge. Separate heating programmes are then created for each area, each controlled by its own thermostat, to ensure that the room is only heated when it is likely to be in use.

For example, zoning a system means you can set the heating to come on in the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom first thing in the morning while the household gets ready for the day, leaving the living and office areas set at a lower temperature. Then, from 9am when children are at school and adults are either out at work or in their home office, the heating in those areas can be switched off,

or the temperature reduced, while the working area is kept warm.

Having multiple zones gives complete flexibility and control over the heating, so that no heat energy should ever be wasted on an unoccupied room.

With more people working flexibly in the future, flexible heating systems will ensure that they don’t pay any more than they have to for the comfort and warmth that a modern UFH system brings.

Design for life Creating a zoned UFH system comes down to the design. A zoned system uses a wiring centre and actuators to provide independent control of each zone, with separate pipe runs going to each room, all connected to a central manifold. A room thermostat is then fitted in each area to monitor the temperature,

sending data back to the wiring centre and telling it when it needs to open the actuator and fire up the boiler to send heat to that specific zone.

Making sure this type of system works efficiently means choosing the right controls, and working with a manufacturer who can design a system for you that maximises efficiency at every stage. Every UFH system should be carefully designed and built to meet the users’ needs. That means talking with customers right at the start to learn how they live and how they want to be able to use the system, then assessing what zones they will need.

Always choose a supplier that can offer advice on the right questions to ask, and one that will provide detailed CAD and installation plans to make fitting the system simple. ■ www.ufh.co.uk

Training is back – and here’s why you need it As lockdown restrictions ease, manufacturers can provide face-to-face, hands-on training once again. Navien’s national training manager Sean Keleher looks at why it’s so important to keep your product knowledge and skills up to date.

ith new boilers and accessories constantly being brought out, training remains vital for heating engineers in both the oil and gas sectors.

Covid-19 restrictions meant that training centres around the country experienced heavy restrictions or had to close temporarily, but as essential workers, heating engineers were able to carry on servicing and repairing boilers nationwide.

Training didn’t stop altogether, though, and many companies created alternatives to physical courses, including videos, eLearning, online questionnaires and Zoom sessions. But now there is light at the end of the tunnel, and manufacturers are re-opening their training centres and inviting gas engineers back for vital, hands-on, face-to-face sessions.

In an increasingly competitive market, heating engineers need

generation. For new learners, they can provide colleges and educational establishments with the most advanced boilers on the market, to ensure students are up to date with the latest in heating technology.

Heating technicians need to be properly trained for the work they carry out, giving them confidence in their skills and product knowledge, while offering their customers added peace of mind in terms of safety, costs and efficiency. Attending a manufacturer’s training day is an excellent way to learn all the essential information under the guidance of a dedicated technical expert. A manufacturer-led training course also ensures that engineers can demonstrate that they have the levels of competency required when fitting a specific product.

This enables attendees to obtain valuable experience with live gas, oil and water connections, as well as familiarising themselves with the latest controls and relevant legislation.

It can be challenging to take time off work and attend a training course, but doing so offers long-term benefits.

Industry-recognised training schemes include hands-on advice and learning, helping add to and enhance installers’ expertise and skills.

All appropriate accessories should also be explored in

depth – including flues, pumps, condensate traps and control systems. When looking at the controls available, it is important to consider the technical aspects, such as wiring and connectivity, as well as functionality.

Furthermore, as heating installers are now dealing with consumers who have grown more tech savvy, aspects such as smart controls, diagnostics and zoning are all key elements that can require detailed explanation.

Training and certification are the best ways to convey trust to your customers: the more trained gas engineers the heating

industry has, the better its reputation will be, while simultaneously eliminating fraudsters carrying out substandard or even illegal work.

As the industry emerges from lockdown restrictions – and with the heating season nearly upon us – there is no better time to get re-acquainted with the latest legislative and technological developments.

Not only will it refresh your product knowledge, but it can help grow your business by ensuring you are working safely and fulfilling your customer’s expectations. ■

Sludge: seeing is believing Sludge or magnetite in heating system water is a major cause of heating breakdowns. But water quality isn’t usually seen or considered by the homeowner. Tom Hood, Adey’s UK and Ireland sales director, looks at the risks that the build-up of sludge poses, how to prevent it happening, and the importance of showing your customers why it needs to be treated.

M

ost gas engineers know what sludge is and how it forms from corrosion inside radiators, pipes, and soldered joints. The older the system, the more likely it is to have some heating sludge build-up.

But that doesn’t mean that newly heating systems are immune. Corrosion can start to affect boilers and radiators from day one. Indeed, leaving old water in a system unaddressed is like putting old oil in a new car.

According to independent

This means the billpayer has higher energy bills than they would have if the heating system’s water was cleaner. In fact, Band A boilers can shift to Band E in terms of efficiency because of the damage caused by sludge.

The tell-tale signs of sludge can become apparent before the boiler breaks down. They include cold spots in radiators, kettling noises, having to turn the thermostat up, lukewarm water from taps, leaks, loss in boiler pressure, or the boiler simply turning itself off.

Once sludge starts to build up, various parts of the boiler become affected: the main heat exchanger, the plate heat exchanger, expansion vessel, pump, gas valve, automatic air vent, the fan, and even the PCB. Their performance is compromised until it invariably 46 September 2021

the magnet, so that they can be removed as part of annual servicing and maintenance routines. Smart filters can monitor the build-up of sludge and alert heating engineers to a sludge problem before it causes a breakdown.

Adding such prevention measures can reduce annual energy bills by up to £802 a year by keeping the boiler working as efficiently as possible. Filtering out sludge prevents it from damaging the heating system, preventing potential expensive and stressful breakdowns and prolonging the boiler’s lifespan by up to seven years.

Making the invisible visible Best practice when it comes to water testing should be worked into every install, every service, and every repair, whether the system is new or not.

While customers are often very aware that a boiler breakdown will be inconvenient, disruptive and costly, many aren’t aware how preventative maintenance can help to prevent it. On-site, laboratory-style water testing can help them understand the

importance of boiler system water quality and ongoing preventative treatment options. On-site testing of the system’s water quality, including inhibitors, corrosion and pH levels, can open the door to discuss remedial actions, such as system flushing or replenishing inhibitor levels.

This type of measure is also recommended as part of Benchmark best practice when it comes to the preparation, commissioning, and maintenance of domestic heating systems.

Going for the flush Whether you are installing a new boiler or servicing an older model, if you find sludge is present in the system, it is best

practice to remove it. Flushing can remove virtually all the magnetite through a cleaning process, without the need to remove radiators, giving a faster and more effective clean.

As most homeowners’ first point of call for maintaining and repairing their heating systems, heating engineers are not only there to eliminate sludge when it becomes problematic.

While cleaning and powerflushing will stop dirty debris from doing further damage, fitting a magnetic filter to keep freshly cleansed water clean is also vital, keeping customers safe from the dangers of sludge and costly repairs. ■ www.adey.com

Warm floors without the disruption Overfloor systems can bring underfloor heating to a home with minimal disruption, writes Chris Ingram, founder of Continal Underfloor Heating.

O

verfloor systems are a relative newcomer to the underfloor heating (UFH) industry.

Unlike more traditional systems that are laid beneath the floor of the property before being buried under a liquid screed, overfloor systems are laid on top of an existing subfloor.

They can then be covered with carpet, vinyl, wood floors or tiles, bringing the luxury and efficiency of UFH to properties – without the disruption of having to rip up the existing floor.

This flexibility has made them extremely popular with installers, and there are many different products available – but they don’t all offer the same benefits, and you need to make sure that the system provides the promised amount of heat or risk disappointing your customers.

Overfloor systems typically consist of a high-strength

insulated substrate board inset with grooves where the UFH pipes sit. The substrate is laid on top of the base floor and, once the pipes have been set into the grooves, the floor covering is laid on top.

Overfloor boards based on an extruded polystyrene-insulated substrate won’t provide the same heat output as a screed system, typically providing 60W/m2 compared with 100W/m2 of heat from a screed system. But the reaction times are still fast because the heat is sent directly up into the floor covering rather than first having to navigate through a solid screed.

Overfloor systems use thin heating pipes to keep build-up heights to a minimum. But because the systems are designed to be as narrow as possible, it’s important to check the compressive strength of the board to make sure it can take

the weight of the floor being laid over it.

This is especially true if you’re planning to tile over the UFH system because the heavy weight of the tiles can compress the board and cause it to shift, risking the tile grout cracking. Some manufacturers require their systems to be laid using special primers and adhesives to prevent this, but these products can be expensive. Alternatively a layer of plywood could be added on top to stabilise the floor, though this will reduce heating efficiencies and increase the floor build-up height.

BoilerMag adds compact system filter

The new LG R32 Monobloc Therma V heat pump unit makes it possible to incorporate standard boilers and/or solar panels into heating and cooling, for an innovative and economical heating and hot water system.

The Monobloc version of the air-to-water heat pump is now available in 5kW to 16kW 1Ø and 12kW to 16kW 3Ø. It comes with a wide operating range of 10Hz-135Hz, water temperatures up to 65°C without an electric

Glow-worm’s new Compact is small but mighty Glow-worm says its new Compact boiler is one of the smallest on the market, with a casing size of 626mm x 400mm, making it suitable where space is at a premium, including kitchen cupboards and caravan retrofit projects.

The combi is available in 24kW and 28kW in a bundle that comes with a flue and system filter. Its stainless-steel heat exchanger provides protection against corrosion for older systems, helping to increase the lifespan of the boiler.

App integration with Viega slimline press tool Viega’s Pressgun Picco 6 Plus makes press connection installation simple, even in the most confined or awkward spaces, says the company.

The new inline configuration has been designed to operate as a natural extension of the arm.

At just 1.6kg, it is 700g lighter than the previous generation Pressgun Picco and can be used comfortably with one hand.

Its 180° rotating head means connections can be pressed at any angle.

Rinnai’s Sensei N Series continuous-flow hot water heaters are now ready to use with the proposed initial supply of hydrogen blends in the existing gas infrastructure.

The Sensei N Series can be powered by a blend of up to 30 per cent hydrogen, and Rinnai UK is developing units that will be able to operate on 100 per cent hydrogen.

The appliance is described as suitable for use with natural gas out of the box, but can be

converted and re-commissioned in the field to operate safely and efficiently solely using a hydrogen supply.

All Rinnai units are guaranteed to provide limitless volumes of temperature-accurate hot water, provided fuel and water connections are constant.

The Job • Provide technical advice, expertise and troubleshooting support to dealers, architects, installers, clients, and in-house staff.

• Liaise with appliance manufacturers and product suppliers.

• Liaise with technical specialists, approval bodies and service providers.

• Perform analysis and mentoring activities, document, and report on findings.

• Coordinate technical spares stocks, despatch and returns.

• Undertake technical writing and publish guidance documents for installers and servicing engineers.

• Keep abreast of regulatory and guidance changes, then effectively communicate and manage key elements.

• Comply with regulations and work practices plus industry or site-specific work rules.

• Conduct administrative audit and technical reviews with recommendations for change proposals.

• Carry out other administrative duties to include maintaining accurate records and interpreting data.

• Hours of work are 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday (8 hour paid shift).
