The industry shows its support and creativity The 13th Gas Safety Week in September was another great success, with people and organisations from across the industry uniting to share gas safety messages more creatively than ever.

Here, we look at just a few of the huge range of activities.

hat did Gas Safe Register do?

The Gas Safety Guardians calendar, unveiled during Gas Safety Week, caught the attention of national and regional media across the country.

The calendar showcases what makes gas engineers unique and represents their real voices, showcasing their breadth of experience and diversity alongside useful gas safety tips.

From the Mirror to the Daily Express and the Daily Star, national newspapers featured the striking visuals of the calendar’s front cover – and

The Royal Yachting Association focused on what those using the UK’s inland waterways need to know to stay safe from the dangers of carbon monoxide and gas. It highlighted how to use LPG safely on board, and the signs and symptoms of CO poisoning. It also provided useful tips on ventilation requirements, the importance of not modifying LPG installations, and making sure that all appliances are inspected regularly.

The huge press coverage reached 9.6 million readers and contributed to a 15 per cent rise in visitors to Gas Safe’s website.

As ever, digital users were crucial to the campaign, which used several different strands to reach as many people as possible: Google ads, YouTube and social media channels all amplified crucial gas safety messages, reaching millions of online viewers.

Housing association Together Housing featured the story of Sonia Gillespie, a mum of two who gave up a career in dentistry to become a gas engineer.

She said: “I always knew I wanted to step into an industry where there aren’t typically as many women, because I wanted to be able to have that sense of

Alpha carried out research that highlighted that many homeowners are either neglecting gas safety or don’t know enough about it. The survey found that 63 per cent of Brits do not check or replace the batteries in their CO alarm, and that more than 40 per cent don’t arrange to get their boiler serviced every year, often citing cost as the reason.

To help combat this, the manufacturer suggested ways that gas engineers can have conversations with their customers to help keep them safe: • Asking them whether they know where their CO alarm is and how to test it • When a new appliance has been installed, to make sure they know where their gas emergency control valve is and how to shut it off in an emergency • Design a checklist to leave with them on what to do if they suspect a gas escape • Add a sticker to the boiler with the contact number of the National Gas Emergency Service.

Mark Vitow teamed up with Tesla UK for a special offer on gas cooker and catering hoses. The Cookerflex bayonet and Micropoint cooker hoses have a patented fire-safe fusible plug that shuts off the gas supply at the socket in the event of a fire. The company promoted the offer on its social media, sent a Gas Safety Week Deals flyer to all its customers, and promoted the offer on its website.

Talon ran a superhero-themed giveaway, highlighting how its ID clips can help identify pipework supplying gas, hot water and cold water. Marketing manager Mike Morris said: “Sometimes installers will be faced with a maze of pipework. [But] installing Identification Clips makes it quick and easy for future installers and homeowners to safely identify what pipes are carrying what around their houses.”

Online boiler installation company iHeat really got the bit between its teeth.

“ Why I drive around the country to tragic incidents”

A

n award-winning gas specialist at HSE used Gas Safety Week to describe the “emotionally taxing” week he spent at the site of an explosion that claimed the life of a two-year-old boy.

Principal registered gas engineer Steve Critchlow was called to Mallowdale Avenue in Heysham, Lancashire, following the blast in May 2021. He stayed at the site for a week as part of his investigation for HSE and his report supported the conviction of a man who was sent to prison for 15 years for manslaughter, damaging a gas meter and theft of gas.

Steve Critchlow, HSE’s gas specialist and Engineer of the Year at the National Gas Industry Awards, discusses his career, regulations and diversity.

Fatal explosions “It was a very emotionally taxing and high-profile case,” Steve says. “The explosion was caused by a next-door neighbour tampering with their gas installation and my work involved attending the scene, doing some laboratory testing and producing a report.”

Steve was named this year’s Engineer of the Year at the National Gas Industry Awards.

The 50-year-old from Buxton investigated fatal gas explosions in the Cairngorms in 2015 and in Shaw, Oldham, in 2011.

His role also requires him to investigate CO poisonings, including a fatality in Ipswich in 2012.

Steve says: “The family of the deceased wrote to me afterwards and sent me a lovely card with a handwritten message just saying how much they appreciated what I had

done and they could see I did my very best to explain to them what had happened.

Motivation “I kept that card because that is kind of the motivation every time, why I jump up out of my seat and drive around the country to attend these tragic incidents.”

Alongside his investigation work, Steve’s role at HSE requires him to appear in court as an expert evidence provider for gas-related prosecutions.

In July 2023, his incident investigation work saw him named as Engineer of the Year at the National Gas Industry Awards.

A gas inspector with 20 years’ experience with HSE, Steve is also responsible for advising fellow HSE inspectors and employers in the gas industry. All too often, he has seen what can happen when employers do not adhere to gas

safety regulations, which is why he believes it is so important that businesses safely maintain their gas installations. “It is very tempting for businesses to try and save money, to try to save time by not looking after their gas installations,” he says.

“It’s a highly regulated industry and the reason for that is because we know it can go wrong with fires and explosions and there is also a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning if appliances are not maintained regularly.”

Reflecting on this year’s Gas Safety Week theme celebrating diversity among Gas Safe engineers, Steve says: “Diversity needs to be normalised. There are around 56 million people with gas appliances in their homes and it’s increasingly important that the trusted engineers who keep those families safe must better reflect the communities they are serving.” n

Get ready for 2FA Gas Safe Register is introducing two-factor authentication (2FA).

It’s designed to protect you and the information that the Register holds about you – and you’re probably already familiar with it when you log into your banking, email or other apps.

When it’s implemented, you’ll need to use it every time you log into your Gas Safe Register online account. 2FA will be introduced in stages but please take these steps now so that you’re ready: • Every person who logs into your online account on your behalf must set up their own account with their own unique user ID and password.

This includes anyone who handles your registration renewal, notifies, adds engineers or orders a licence card on your behalf. You will no longer be able to share your user ID and password with anyone else.

• You can add new users and set them up in your online account by choosing: > Account Settings > User Accounts > Add Additional Users > Set Permissions.

As in previous years, ads are spread right across different types of media – TV, radio, national newspapers and digital.

And for the first time, there will be ads on Nextdoor, the app for neighbourhoods, where communities connect, share information and recommendations.

Is your ID card up to date?

Your Gas Safe Register ID card is an important tool: it both promotes your business and helps to raise awareness of gas safety.

When you show it, the licence card means that people can quickly and easily confirm that you are registered and hold the right competencies to carry out the gas work agreed.

The use of the licence card is covered in Gas Safe Register’s Rules of Registration. Anyone carrying out gas work must carry a licence (ID) card that shows the name of the registered business in whose name the gas work is being carried out.

Check the front The Gas Safe ID card has information on both the front and back, so it’s important to check both sides. Here’s what the card shows on the front: • Your photo: Please check this is correct.

• The name of the business that is registered and registration number: So that consumers can confirm engineers are from the company they contacted to carry out the work.

• Start and expiry date: The start date will be the date the card was requested.

The expiry date is the date the registration is due to expire. However, where an engineer’s core work

Don’t forget you can find this on the front of your ID card at the top and embossed across the middle. It's also on the back of your card in the bottom right-hand corner.

categories expire before the registration end date, the date that the work categories expire will be listed. If the date has expired, you should contact Gas Safe Register.

• The licence number: Each registered engineer has their own unique licence number: this is at the top of the card and embossed across the middle as well.

• Security hologram: Official Gas Safe ID cards have a hologram with the Gas Safe logo.

If you carry out work for other businesses, you must be registered in your own name or be listed against the registered

business for which you are working if the work is carried out in the name of that business.

You must show your ID card when asked and return it to Gas Safe Register if it asks you to do this.

Check the back On the back of the card is a full list of your work categories, along with the expiry date. Make sure you check that the work categories accurately describe the work areas in which you are qualified. If a work category expires before the end of the registration year, the expiry date of that work category will be included on the back of the

card. If any information appears to be inaccurate or missing, please contact Gas Safe Register as soon as possible.

When you renew your annual Gas Safe registration, you will receive an updated card automatically. However, if you take additional qualifications during the year, these will not be included. If you extend range or scope – for example, by adding a changeover to LPG or from domestic to non-domestic – you should order a new ID card that accurately reflects your current competencies. The cost for this is £11 plus VAT and you can order a new card via your Gas Safe Register online account.

Govt backtracks on net zero What did the industry make of the Prime Minister’s softening of plans to phase out fossil-fuel boilers and switch to low carbon?

What is net zero?

The UK is committeed to reaching net zero by 2050. It is targeting a reduction in carbon emissions of 68 per cent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, and 77 per cent by 2035.

The government says it has cut emissions faster than any other G7 country.

he Prime Minister has delayed and softened measures intended to support the UK reach its 2050 net-zero carbon goal.

Rishi Sunak said the UK is still committed to its targets but cited “unacceptable costs on hard-pressed British families”, and pushed back and watered down some of the planned measures and deadlines to which the industry had been working.

He said homeowners will have more time to transition to heat pumps – and, in a major step back, that not everyone would have to do so.

“We’ll never force anyone to rip out their existing boiler and replace it with a heat pump,” he said. “You’ll only ever have to make the switch when you’re replacing your boiler anyway, and even then, not until 2035.

“And to help those

households for whom this will be hardest, I’m introducing a new exemption so that they’ll never have to switch at all.”

Alongside this, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which provides grants to people upgrading their fossil-fuel boiler to a low-carbon heating system, has risen to £7,500 from £5,000.

Under the revised plans, the government said it would: • Delay the ban on installing oil and LPG boilers, and new coal heating, for off-gas-grid homes to 2035, instead of phasing them out from 2026.

Many of these homes are not suitable for heat pumps, so this ensures homeowners are not having to spend around £10,000-15,000 on upgrading their homes in just three years’ time.

• Set an exemption to the phase-out of fossil-fuel boilers, including gas, in

2035, so that households who will most struggle to make the switch to heat pumps or other low-carbon alternatives won’t have to do so. This is expected to cover about one-fifth of homes, including those off grid, that would need expensive retrofitting or a very large electricity connection.

• Scrap policies to force landlords to upgrade the energy efficiency of their properties, but instead continue to encourage households to do so where they can.

• Move back the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by five years, so sales of new cars from 2035 will be zero emission.

The government says the Chancellor and Energy Security Secretary will bring forward comprehensive new reforms in due course.

Peter found a balanced-flue gas fire fitted into a builder’s opening where the chimney had been capped. The fire has been replaced with an electric version.

Simon was called to a property because he was told “the end part of the flue is missing”. He found that it was even worse than reported. The appliance was made safe.

FROM TERRI McDAID Terri saw this installation in a holiday park where the chalet owner had run out of gas and so used a small bottle. The installation has been made safe.

Chris attended a fault on a fire and back boiler unit that the customer said hadn’t been serviced “for a few years”. The top of the combustion box was badly corroded.

The appliance has been made safe.

Billy found this LPG installation with the wrong type of pipe that a squirrel had chewed through. The installation has now been rectified.

FROM RICHARD DEAKIN Richard found two crushed-up takeaway food cartons inserted into the chimney/flue terminal in a boiler he was replacing.

He would like to have tested the appliance while in use with his FGA but the boiler was already off the wall and the system had been drained down.

FROM OWEN RICHARDS Owen Richards found many reasons to remove a gas fire during service: an inappropriate soldered joint, unprotected pipework, and newspaper used to seal an opening in the chimney/flue route. The appliance has been removed and the supply sealed off, at the customer’s request.

FROM MICK INGER Mick discovered that the copper pipe was completely corroded through because of a leaking condense pipe dripping.

FROM TOM CARTER Tom was investigating a condensate leak and saw that the chimney/flue was completely rotten.

He also identified an unsecured external expansion vessel.

The chimney/flue has been replaced and an internal expansion vessel fitted to the boiler.

FROM STEPHEN LEITCH Stephen Leitch spotted the vertical chimney/ flue terminal (top) while he was working opposite: he said it’s the lowest he’s ever seen.

At another job, he found the chimney/flue terminal end grill was missing and was not completely sealed to the wall. He replaced the complete chimney/ flue, which was also badly corroded.

FROM DOUGIE ROSS Dougie was asked to service and complete a landlord’s gas safety record for this fire and back boiler unit. It hadn’t been touched in years and, on inspection, it was unsafe because of escapes on the gas pipe and burner caused by corrosion. The appliance was made safe.

FROM JAMES MATTHEWS James spotted these chimney/flue terminals.

He told us that there are more than 50 new-build houses on the site and not one of the terminals is straight.

FROM DAVID BARNARD David found this chimney/ flue not sealed to the wall inside or outside.

The elbow had been secured to the top of the boiler with silicon.

The boiler was made safe and later replaced.

FROM RYAN BROWN Ryan sent us his photo of some nice installation pipework (top). But he also found a rather unusual radiator valve/ TRV assembly in another property.

FROM ROB WILSON Rob found the boiler was leaking fumes from the burner door: the burner plate seal had perished due to age. Rob made the boiler safe. New seals have now been fitted and Rob carried out a full strip-down service.

FROM PAUL FARR Paul’s customer had got someone from the pub to install their boiler for £200. We’re not sure it was worth even that much.

FROM PAUL BETTANY Paul found this boiler, where builders had built an extension over the chimney/flue with all windows and doors in place. They had also built over the incoming gas service pipe and left an open end after removing the gas hob.

The installation was isolated and a RIDDOR submitted.

FROM NIGEL ALDRIDGE Nigel saw that flexible water pipe had been used on the gas supply to the hob. The appliance was made safe.

FROM MARTHINUS STRYDOM Marthinus was carrying out a safety check when he found damaged flue sample points on the boiler and plug/caps completely missing. Products of combustion were escaping directly into the property. He fitted a new flue adapter and flue.

FROM KEVIN SCOTT Kevin found this chimney/flue in an enclosed shed-type extension. He turned the boiler off and made safe.

Does anyone, anywhere, actually have a plan?

Heat pumps, heat pumps, heat pumps. That’s all we seem to hear these days. I get the environmental issue, and I get that they’re probably a big part of the future heating industry.

But as a gas engineer, I just can’t get enthusiastic about them.

I don’t know whether I’m alone on this one, but the thought of having to retrain, at 48 years of age, just seems like hard work. Talking to other engineers who’ve been there and done that – or are currently doing so – it doesn’t exactly sound like a laid-back experience either.

Gaining your MCS accreditation, and F-Gas if you’re working on refrigerants, it appears, is as easy as

by just 30 installers. That’s nationwide, I assume. If this doesn’t scream ‘skills shortage’ then I don’t know what does.

Maybe I’m not alone. But if the industry is blinkered by heat pumps, does that mean that we have completely forgotten about electric boilers: a technology that isn’t new, and is a darn sight easier to fit than a heat pump?

Will hydrogen happen?

And what about hydrogen?

Will this ever happen? Less than 18 months ago, might I remind Registered Gas Engineer that it published plans of a 20 per cent blend of hydrogen being rolled out from this coming winter season. Is this still in the pipeline (excuse the pun) or has it magically disappeared?

I wrote this letter, the Prime Minister delayed the implementation of some of the government’s key “green” objectives. Let’s face it, who didn’t see that coming? It’s fine making all these bold claims of net zero by 2050, but it’s only as time goes on that they are starting to discover what the cost of all of this bold talk

actually looks like.

Now, it appears that the government is saying that hydrogen is too expensive to be a viable fuel source for heating homes. If this is the case, what about the cost of decommissioning the gas network? I read recently that this would likely cost £65 billion. This figure will, no doubt, double, or even triple over time, as it always does on public projects. And it will be the consumer who must pay for this, not the government.

Shut the shop

What are the gas network companies’ views on this? Do they even get a say? Are they happy to just shut up shop and go and do something else?

Does anyone, anywhere, actually have a firm plan?

I get that times move on and progress needs to be made.

I also get that gas as a fuel has a limited shelf-life, even if you don’t buy into the current climate crisis. What I don’t get is the distinct lack of forward planning.

Myself, I’m still installing gas boilers at around the same pace that I’ve always done, and I don’t really see this changing in the near to medium future. Heck, I’ve got maybe 20 years left of working in the industry and beyond that point I’m not really bothered whether the way forward is heat pumps, hydrogen, electric boilers, or even back to coal fires. henever you carry out work on a flued appliance, GSIUR 26(9) requires that you immediately examine and confirm the effectiveness of the flue. But this requirement is particularly difficult where there is a concealed chimney/ flue system, particularly those in ceiling voids.

Technical Bulletin 008 was developed by an industrywide working group to provide guidance for these situations.

It makes clear that any concealed room-sealed fandraught boiler chimney/flue system installation being worked on where you cannot confirm the effectiveness of the chimney/flue system should be classified as At Risk and, with the responsible person’s permission, it should be turned off in accordance with the Unsafe Situations Procedure (IGEM/G/11).

How to deal with it The Technical Bulletin contains guidance on how to deal with an existing concealed roomsealed fanned draught boiler chimney/flue system in order of preference: • Fit inspections hatches, CO alarms and regular servicing and maintenance Inspection hatches at appropriate locations are the most effective way to examine the integrity of the chimney/flue system when the flue has been concealed within the fabric of the building. This may be boxing or ceiling voids containing a flue or where the flue has been installed in a concealed location, for example boxing in or a ceiling void.

Inspection hatches should enable the overall integrity of chimney/flue system to be confirmed. You need to consider any other defects before you can determine whether it is safe.

If you can confirm that it is complete/intact and effective, then provided that any identified installation defect(s) do not constitute an increased risk of chimney/flue system failure, it is safe for continued use. Typical installation defects that may contribute to an increased risk of chimney/flue system failure include: – For condensing boilers, inadequate gradient/fall of the chimney/flue system back to the boiler, which may trap condensate, putting excessive strain on the chimney/flue system joints or supports – Incorrect/inadequate chimney/ flue system support, constituting significant risk of chimney/flue system failure – Signs of condensate/water leakage at chimney/flue system joints – Incorrect flue material/joints other than specified by the appliance manufacturer, etc.

• Fit a CO void monitoring safety shut-off system (COSSVM) and regular servicing and maintenance In exceptional circumstances, the installation of inspection hatches may not always offer the best, nor a practical option – for example, if the enclosure around the chimney/flue is too small to allow effective examination of the whole chimney/flue system, or where fitting inspection hatches could affect any existing fire protection measures.

Systems that monitor the void for the presence of CO and which, on activation, shut down the faulty boiler, may be considered as a method of providing an additional level of protection for property occupiers who do not have, nor agree to have inspection hatches installed.

This form of protection, along with the 26(9) checks as a minimum will ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, that the boiler and chimney/flue system are safe for continued use.

If you cannot confirm the effectiveness of a concealed flue/ chimney, you must classify the installation At Risk and, with the responsible person’s permission, turn off the system in accordance with the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure (IGEM/G/11).

If your customers refuse you permission to turn off an At Risk installation, you should ask them to sign paperwork to confirm that they accept responsibility for a situation that could result in a serious incident.

In the case of an Immediately Dangerous situation, where permission to disconnect the boiler has not been given, you should contact the Gas Emergency Contact Centre.

Dealing with flues in voids (continued) Note: These systems are not acceptable as a substitute for inspection hatches for new or replacement installations, which will need to meet the requirements of relevant Building Regulations and standards. Your customer should understand that when their boiler needs replacing, ceiling hatches will need to be fitted at the same time as the complete chimney/flue system is replaced.

A void monitoring system (COSSVM) alone will not satisfy the requirements of the Building Regulations/Standards.

Where neither of these situations exists, you should continue to undertake regular service/maintenance on the boiler, recommend the installation of CO alarms, and classify the installation as At Risk in accordance with IGEM/G/11, the Unsafe Situations Procedure.

Boiler operational safety and other checks In addition to confirming the effectiveness of the concealed chimney/flue; the supply of combustion air, the operating pressure and/or the heat input (gas rate), you must verify the following:

What does the guidance cover – and what is excluded?

The guidance mainly covers situations where the chimney/flue system passes through ceiling voids, floor voids or behind false walls.

It does NOT apply to chimney/flue systems incorporating: • Vertical condensing flexible room-sealed fanned-draught chimney/flues systems installed in enclosures, such as constructional chimneys etc, which are sealed so that any leakage of products of combustion cannot pass from the enclosure to any room or internal space; and • Short chimney/flue systems such as those that are connected directly from an appliance to outside air through an external wall.

The guidance does not apply to the air inlet pipes of twin-pipe chimney/flue systems.

•T hat the combustion performance of the appliance is correct in all modes of operation eg, in both high and low fire rates, and complies with the manufacturer’s instructions or BS 7967 •W here manufacturers provide an air inlet sampling point, that any specified O2 levels are in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions • Plume/heat discharge is evident from the chimney/flue termination with the boiler in operation • There is no evidence of distress on the enclosure or ceiling along the complete length of the chimney/flue system • There are no known previous

issues relating to the property, or other properties in the same development, that could be related to concealed chimney/flue systems issues that have not been corrected/ rectified before. You should enquire with the responsible person.

Adjacent property You may find chimney/flue systems routed through an adjacent property, even though this installation practice is no longer permitted. In these situations, and if checks of the boiler and the chimney/flue system in the property containing the boiler are all satisfactory, you should take reasonable steps to ensure overall chimney/flue system integrity. Reasonable steps may include: • Making enquires with all parties and asking to see evidence of reports of examinations made by them, or on their behalf.

• Making enquiries with the occupants of adjacent properties to gain access • Leaving documentation with the occupier(s) of adjacent property, explaining the requirement and seeking arrangements for access.

Make sure you record the steps you have taken.

Following the guidance given in Technical Bulletin 008 (Edition 3) is not compulsory and you may take other action.

But following the guidance will ensure that you are complying with the regulations, and the relevant enforcing authorities may refer to this guidance as industry practice.

If you can’t gain access to an adjacent property and there is no evidence that there are any chimney/flueing issues, you can leave the boiler and chimney/ flue system operational.

However, if you suspect a problem, you should check the complete length of the chimney/flue system (including parts of the chimney/flue system routed through adjacent property). Until you can gain access to the adjacent property, you should classify the installation as At Risk. n

From the helplines The main role of a Technical Officer at Gas Safe Register is to deal with questions that come in on the technical helpline or via email. Some questions can be straightforward to answer, but others will take slightly longer to answer because it takes time to get the correct information from the relevant document – a British Standard, IGEM document or Building Regulation from the appropriate region of the UK. The following questions are just some of those that have been asked over the past month.

Pipework

Q: What size pipework can I work on with my domestic ACS core competency?

A: A domestic gas engineer can work on up to and including a U16 meter, up to and including 35mm copper and 1¼” steel pipework, and with an installation volume not exceeding 0.035m3. This is in accordance with IGEM/UP/1B.

Flues

Q: I’ve been asked to renew a boiler but the existing flue goes over the boundary into next door’s garden.

Can I fit it in original position?

A: No. The boiler MUST be installed in accordance with current Gas and Building Regulations. These require the flue termination to be in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, gas regulations, relevant British Standards, and Building Regulations, which in this case is Approved Document J.

Cookers

Q: I have been asked to fit a second-hand cooker but do not have the instructions. Can I fit it?

A: No. Even if the appliance is second-hand, you are required to install it following the manufacturer’s instructions.

If the cooker is owned by a customer and being moved to their new property, you can install the appliance in accordance with BS 6172 and Technical Bulletin 022.

Ventilation

Q: What are the ventilation requirements for mobile catering vehicles?

A: In mobile units, ventilation should be provided at a rate of at least 250mm2 for each 1kW input rating of all appliances, or 1000mm2, whichever is the greater.

This should be divided equally between ventilation openings at high and low level, as per Section 8.3 of UKLPG CoP 24 Part 3. The effectiveness of this ventilation must be checked and recorded by a registered gas engineer using a suitable CO2 meter, as described in BS 6173 and IGEM/UP/19.

Q: I’m doing a safety check/ service and I’ve noticed there is insufficient ventilation provided for the appliance.

Can I still service the appliance?

A: You can complete the work you are there to do but you must consider whether the appliance is deemed safe or not. If it is open-flued and has less than 90 per cent of the combustion air required, then it is At Risk. If it is a roomsealed appliance that requires ventilation, most probably for cooling purposes, and has less than 90 per cent of required ventilation, then it is Not to Current Standards (NCS).

Get ready for winter Top tips to prepare your customers’ heating systems and homes in readiness for the cold season ahead.

Protect boilers Older non-condensing boiler installations in unheated spaces, such as a garage, outhouse or loft space, rely on good insulation of pipework, cold water storage (CWS) and feed and expansion (F&E) tanks. The boilers themselves often need additional frost thermostats and pipe thermostats: these override the normal heating controls and fire up the boiler in the coldest of temperatures.

Some boilers also have a spring-loaded safety valve screwed into the cast-iron heat exchanger to relieve the expanding pressure on the boiler if the cold feed and vent pipe should become frozen.

Newer boilers have built-in frost protection instead of relying on external controls.

External condensate drains You should only consider fitting an external condensate drain connection if internal gravity or pumped connection is impractical to install.

Where the condensate must be run to an external drain, make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions and BS 6798*, which require the condense pipe to be run internally as far as possible before going outside. The pipe diameter must be increased to a minimum of 30mm ID (typically 32mm OD) before it passes through the wall.

The angle of the pipe should slope downwards by at least 3° as it passes through the wall to help maintain a good velocity as the condensate exits the building.

The external pipe run should be kept as short as possible, to a maximum of 3 metres, taking the most direct and most vertical route to the discharge point. There should be no horizontal sections in which condensate might collect.

To minimise the effects of wind-chill, the open end of the condensate pipe should terminate below the grating and above the water level. It should also be covered by a drain cover, such as those used to prevent blockage by leaves. The pipe must be insulated from the point where it emerges from outside the external wall of the building, using suitable waterproof and weatherproof insulation.

Alternative methods of protection may be used, as specified by manufacturers, and

Dealing with frozen condensate It’s important to insulate all exposed pipework in unheated spaces, but the most likely cause of damage to a boiler in sub-zero temperatures will be a frozen condensate pipe that has been run externally.

When the condense pipe freezes, condensate backs up inside the boiler causing damage that could lead to expensive repairs.

It will cause the boiler to go into shut-off and many customers will turn to you for help.

However, there are steps that they can take themselves, and it’s worth having these to hand if your customer calls:

products such as those that preheat the condense before it leaves the thermal envelope of the dwelling can be used too.

Protect homes Damage to property and heating systems can happen when pipes become frozen or when the temperature rises again and damaged frozen pipework thaws out to expose leaks.

Make sure your customers know where their pipes are and how to shut the water off. When pipes freeze, speed is critical: the quicker the water is shut off, the better the chance of preventing serious damage.

Outside taps: Use a suitable insulating cover to protect outside taps from wind-chill and freezing conditions. It’s also a good idea to fit an additional

Holidays: The following measures will help to protect homes that are left empty during the winter: • Add antifreeze to the central heating system: this is especially useful in properties such as residential park homes or holiday homes.

• Leave the central heating switched on and set the room thermostat to a low temperature setting.

• If the loft space has cold water storage and feed and expansion tanks, and you are concerned about freezing in a prolonged period of sub-zero temperatures, open the loft hatch slightly at one end to allow some heat to circulate into the loft. n

Remember When installing a boiler, any horizontal flue exiting the property needs to be installed at least 300mm above flat surfaces to avoid becoming blocked by snow or leaves.

Use of oxygen equipment The use of medical oxygen equipment can increase the risks of combustion in materials that would otherwise be inert.

M The use of oxygen therapy should not have a detrimental effect on a gas appliance itself: the risk from the use of oxygen is that of flash fire, where an escape of oxygen reaches a naked flame. In the case of gas appliances, this can be the pilot light to a back boiler unit.

any gas engineers might have customers who use medical apparatus at home, such as oxygen therapy and nebulisers, and you may not ever have given it a second thought.

They’re perfectly safe when used as instructed, but mistakes do happen and you should be aware of potential issues and dangers.

Oxygen therapy in the home is a form of treatment for several serious health conditions, including respiratory and cardiac complaints.

Oxygen is not flammable, unlike other gases and chemicals, but it is a highenergy gas that readily oxidises other materials and strongly supports combustion. This means that the release of any additional oxygen into a fire or any other gas-burning appliance will greatly increase the intensity and rate of combustion. It could also aid in the combustion of materials that otherwise would be relatively inert.

Oxygen equipment There are three main types of oxygen therapy: • Oxygen concentrators • Portable (ambulatory) oxygen • Nebuliser therapy.

When people who have a respiratory condition use a nebuliser to relieve the symptoms, the gases given off by the device may affect the flame characteristics and hue.

Depending on the concentration of these gases in the room, the burner flames can change colour, ranging from pale pink to bright orange.

The flames also appear to be larger than normal: this is because they are affected by salts in the gases that expose the full outer mantle of the flame that is usually not visible to the naked eye. The flames will return to their normal size and colour once the room has been purged with fresh air.

An oxygen-producing device can pose a significant safety risk: for example, if the patient is using oxygen equipment near a naked flame such as a gas fire.

The properties of air

By volume, ‘dry’ air contains approximately 20.9 per cent oxygen (O2), 78 per cent nitrogen (N2), 0.93 per cent argon (AR), 0.039 per cent carbon dioxide (CO2) and a small number of other gases.

An excess of oxygen in a room or space can be very dangerous, resulting in an increased level of risk in the combustibility of materials, including those considered to be non-flammable (such as metals) under normal conditions.

Oxygen is an oxidising agent, which means it gives oxygen

to another substance, which strongly increases combustion.

Levels of oxygen in the atmosphere above 21 per cent cause materials to burn more intensely, faster and hotter than in normal air. An increase of oxygen of around 3 per cent can double the combustion rate. And where medical equipment is involved, this means that a leaking valve or damaged oxygen hose in a poorly ventilated room can quickly increase the oxygen to a dangerous level.

In normal conditions of temperature and pressure, a fuel source is needed to produce a fire. However, the reactivity of oxygen increases when pressurised, and so oxygen equipment operating above atmospheric pressure

at high flow rates can cause materials to burst into flames spontaneously.

Substances that are not usually considered a fuel can cause a fire – oil, grease and even some metals can burn in the presence of an oxygenenriched atmosphere. Therefore, the use of oil, grease or hand cream should be avoided when using oxygen equipment.

Some types of oxygenproducing device provide a constant flow of the gas to the patient, some of which is not inhaled. Non-inhaled oxygen that escapes from a mask can collect at a low level around the patient because oxygen is denser than air.

For immobile patients, unused oxygen from the mask can flow on to their clothes

and bedding, presenting a significant fire risk. An ignition source such as striking a match or using a naked flame can cause a serious flash fire, igniting clothing or bedding and potentially causing serious or fatal burns.

Using oxygen equipment near an ignition source, such as a gas fire or back boiler, carries a similar risk.

There are no standards currently that give guidance on the minimum clearances required for oxygen-producing equipment from potential ignition sources. However, guides are available from the NHS, local health authority and oxygen supplier for patients about to use oxygen therapy.

Use your own engineering judgement coupled with what

you encounter on site, and make sure that the room(s) where the oxygen equipment is used is ventilated adequately.

If a person or oxygenproducing equipment and cylinders are in very close proximity to an ignition source

– such as a gas fire or cooker – warn them of the danger and, where necessary, help them to move or reposition the equipment/cylinders. You may need to consider the patient’s needs and seek assistance from medical personnel if required. ■

Reduction in gas rate (heat input) test duration for metric gas meters Date issued: 26 September 2023

This Technical Bulletin (TB) is intended to give guidance on reducing the recognised test duration of gas rating an appliance on a metric gas meter from two minutes to one minute.

Introduction

This Technical Bulletin advises on the rationale behind a change to the two-minute gas rate (heat input) check for domestic installations with metric (ultrasonic and diaphragm) gas meters.

It should be noted that a large number of imperial gas meters are still in service and that the gas rate method for this type of meter will remain unchanged, and that one complete revolution of the dial is required.

Background

The two-minute gas rate was introduced in 1995 and has become the industry-recognised procedure for carrying out a gas rate. However, it can be difficult to accurately carry out a two-minute test with larger appliances installed with a smaller heat load requirement.

As such, a trial was set up to test a one-minute test duration.

Several trials by British Gas and Gas Safe Register were carried out using a one-minute test-time duration. The trials proved that the reduction in time did not negatively affect the accuracy of the test and, in many cases, gave a heat input to nearer that given by the manufacturer.

Savings

Although the initial aim of the trial was to make gas rating less frustrating for installers, it highlighted that considerable savings of gas and water consumption per annum could also be achieved.

For gas, there would be savings in usage and wasted energy, with a reduction in CO2 emissions also achieved.

For water (eg, combi boiler hot taps running during check), there would be savings in water usage and a reduction in water/drainage charges for the gas user.

Adopting the one-minute check

Because the check is shorter, the calculation must be altered.

Only the changes made to the previous calculation are highlighted below:

1. Ensure all other appliances are turned off 2. Set the appliance up for a gas rate (heat input) check as detailed in the manufacturer’s instructions 3. Note the initial meter reading 4. Operate the appliance for one minute1 5. After one minute take the final meter reading 6. Subtract the initial meter reading from the final meter reading. This is the amount of gas used, and will be half of what you are currently used to recording.

1 Add any additional seconds that it takes for the display to change after one minute and include these in your calculation.

Procedure While a one-minute test duration is shown to have many benefits, this is not a requirement. If an engineer wishes to continue using the two-minute test duration (such as using an application on a mobile device), then this is their prerogative. The intention of this TB is to show that a reduction in test duration to one minute is both beneficial and accurate, and so would now be an acceptable test procedure.

Liquid Gas UK Code of Practice 33 – Use of LPG Cylinders Date issued: 05 October 2023

This Industry Standard Update provides an overview of the recently published Industry Standard Liquid Gas UK Code of Practice 33 Use of LPG Cylinders.

Introduction

Recently Liquid Gas UK published the new Code of Practice 33 – Use of LPG Cylinders(1). This Code of Practice (CoP) amalgamates, replaces and supersedes various Codes of Practice that had been published previously and which are now withdrawn.

The standard comes into effect immediately. To allow registered businesses time to carry out internal update training to reflect the technical requirement of the updated standard, Gas Safe Register will inspect to the revised standard by 1 April 2024. This should not restrict businesses from applying the specifications sooner.

General

The standard has been amended to update terms, references to legislation and other standards. It defines the requirements for the use and storage of LPG cylinders.

It was recognised that there was significant duplication of information across some Codes of Practice regarding the use and storage of LPG cylinders, and so it was agreed to consolidate a number of these to form one new document.

This new Code of Practice replaces the following Liquid Gas UK CoPs: • CoP 24 part 1:2006 – Use of LPG Cylinders at Residential and Similar Premises(2)

• CoP 24 part 5:2000 – The Storage and Use of LPG on Construction Sites(3) • CoP 24 part 6:2000 – Use of Propane in Cylinders at Commercial and Industrial premises(4).

It also incorporates the relevant parts of the following Liquid Gas UK Consumer Guidance Sheets (CGS): • CGS 3 – Use of LPG cylinders indoors(5) • CGS 5 – LPG hose and tubing for use with vapour offtake cylinders(6) • CGS 17 – Use of clips to secure vapour phase LPG hose and tubing to BSEN 16436- 1 (Classes 1,2 and 3) to end fittings(7) • CGS 26 – Guidance for operators of public LPG refuelling facilities on the filling of freestanding LPG cylinders(8) • CGS 28 – Safe use of LPG propane and butane cylinders and cartridges(9) • CGS 37 – Guidance for private ownership and filling of freestanding LPG cylinders(10) • CGS 39 – Regulators – Safe use(11).

Summary The information contained in the new Code of Practice was previously contained in the standards that it has replaced. Registered businesses should be aware that they have a responsibility to ensure that they are fully apprised of all of the requirements of the whole published standard and their practical application.

It’s time to stop CO KANE’s chief executive Jonathan Kane looks at how the manufacturer is helping to keep people safe in their homes by alerting them to the presence of CO.

T

his year, KANE and charity CO-Gas Safety won IGEM’s Lion’s Lair competition for their work in promoting why gas emergency service engineers must test homes and appliances for carbon monoxide. The simple message It’s Time to Stop CO saw the manufacturer take home the Chris Bielby Award.

The UK’s gas emergency service didn’t used to test homes for CO using engineers who hold the CMDDA1 qualification to find the source of CO – investigating a report of fumes or CO alarm activation.

Now they do test for CO for vulnerable customers.

Vulnerable households All four gas networks have regional programmes to ensure that vulnerable households aren’t left without gas any longer than necessary if the gas supply has to be isolated. If a vulnerable customer cannot afford the repair or replacement of pipework or an essential gas appliance, the GDN will arrange for a Gas Safe registered engineer to visit and carry out the required repair, replacement or service. Gas Safe registered engineers can also carry out CMDD1A checks to identify the source of a CO leak.

Cadent and NGN carry out CMDDA1 room investigations using the KANE458s IAQ analyser with wireless room monitors for their Service Beyond the Meter programme, and Cadent tested more than 600 homes, finding at CO at 200 of them. SGN Care and Repair has tested more than 200 homes.

The right pump for the right purpose Richard Ballard, product manager at Salamander Pumps, reviews the most suitable approaches to resolve low water pressure and flow.

The main mains There are three main systems types in the UK: conventional gravity-fed, mains-fed with a combi boiler, and mains-fed with an unvented system.

M

any households experience low water pressure and flow. But it can be resolved: the issue is how to specify the right product to fit and which solution solution will work most effectively.

Conventional gravity-fed The hot water cylinder is often found in an airing cupboard, with a large cold water storage tank in the loft. The height of the cold-water storage tank determines the pressure and, in turn, the flow rates. These are considered to be low-pressure systems. Shower and wholehouse pumps are suitable for this type of system and will boost water pressure and flow.

Mains fed: combi Combi boilers rely solely on mains flow and pressure to deliver water, typically requiring a minimum of 0.7 bar pressure

What do you want to pump to?

The water-boosting solution you install will depend on the number of outlet(s) you need to boost. In a gravity-fed system: for instance, the 1.5 bar CT50 Xtra twin pump will boost water to the shower only.

All other ranges are suitable for multiple household appliances, with the Right Pump range the most suitable option for the whole house and multiple outlets.

The Right Pump range uses centrifugal technology, which enables higher pressure to be maintained at greater flow rates, up to 3.0 bar. This means they can boost up to eight outlets at once.

Right Pumps and CT Force also incorporate Salamander Pumps’ Crossover Technology, a bypass facility that enables the pump to operate one-sided, such as when running only a hot or cold tap, without causing damage to the side of the pump not in use. and 9 l/min to operate. The boiler delivers hot water on demand. Shower and wholehouse pumps are not suitable for this type of system: instead, an inline mains booster pump, accumulator or pumped tank can improve the flow rate.

Mains fed: unvented Unvented systems have a sealed (unvented) hot water cylinder, fed directly from the mains water supply, with no cold water storage tank. They have a high minimum flow rate of 20 l/min and pressure of 1.5 bar to operate correctly.

Therefore, if the mains is not sufficient, an accumulator or pumped tank will be needed.

Positive or negative?

Gravity-fed systems are by far the most common system in older properties and it’s important to clarify further what

type of product you will need.

A gravity-fed system is either positive or negative head.

A positive head pump will only work in a positive head system but a universal (negative head) pump works in both positive and negative head systems. If there is any doubt, always opt for a universal pump.

A positive head pump is activated when the minimum flow of water of 2 l/min passes through the pump and out of a pumped outlet, such as a shower or tap. To test whether a positive head pump is suitable, carry out the following test: For showers and mixed hot and cold taps: • Turn the water to fully hot • Time how long it takes to get 1 litre of water, if it takes less than 30 seconds then it’s a positive head system.

• Repeat the process for fully cold: both hot and cold must get 1 litre of water in less than 30 seconds for the system to be suitable for positive head pumps.

• For showers, you also need to get 2 litres of mixed water (hot and cold together) in 30 seconds.

For hot or cold outlets, such as a hot or cold tap, time how long it takes to get 1 litre of water. If it takes less than 30 seconds, then it’s a positive head system.

If you cannot measure the water flow rate, then you can check that the system is suitable for a positive head pump if there is more than 600mm between the base of the cold water storage tank and the highest point in the system after the pump. n

To store or not to store?

When the time comes to replace an old commercial water heater, should you choose a hot water cylinder or a water heater?

Gavin Edwards, training manager at Navien UK, compares the benefits of both.

H

ot water cylinders can hold a large volume of water at a fixed temperature – maintained at 60°C to prevent legionella – and can also support large volumes of usage. The average small business needs around a 200-300 litre cylinder, which needs boosting in order to support the volume of water usage.

It’s important to remember that when demand increases, you will need to increase the heat into the system and consider the space that is needed to support the size and weight of the cylinder.

Water heaters Using water heaters can reduce water wastage and increase efficiency because water is used when it is needed rather than by storing it. The customer will

receive rapid and constant hot water from multiple outlets to meet the hot water demands of their business.

Ultimately, these are more efficient than cylinders because the desired temperature can be set on the water heater and the hot water is accessed on demand: with a cylinder, the stored water must be heated up to 60°C before being blended with cold water to bring it down to the appropriate temperature for the user.

This also limits time usage throughout the day because your customers will need to pre-empt and allow time for the water temperature to increase before delivering it, and the stored water will lose its heat as it waits to be used.

For installers, not needing a cylinder can reduce the installation requirements

Not all gas engineers we’ve spoken to realise how a database can unlock a new way of running your business.

You’re sitting on a goldmine of information but using it to find and manage details is really only scratching the tip of the iceberg: • Nearly half (44 per cent) of our users said automated reminders are the most profitable feature for them.

• Filling out quotes and invoices is quick and easy if you have a database from which to copy or pull information automatically.

• A digital database can easily incorporate a full job

history. If you’re struggling to remember or find the quote you sent out, or the notes you left regarding boiler health, agreements with landlords, and so on, then this one’s for you.

Not all databases are equal You may choose to create a database in Microsoft Excel or another spreadsheet editor.

Doing this will mean that you can keep customer information consolidated in one place and sort/search for information easily. Taking it one step further with an online tool like Google Sheets solves the problem of there being only one master copy.

But if you want to take advantage of tools like automated reminders, paperless records and so on, you’ll need to use specially made job management software.

Worcester Bosch launches Compress 2000AWF monobloc heat pump The Compress 2000AWF is the latest addition to Worcester Bosch’s heat pump range. It’s an all-in-one monobloc model with no indoor unit required and is suitable for renovations and new-build.

The high-temperature 2000AWF has outputs ranging from 4kW to 20kW, which can be cascaded up to six units. Its efficient operation and simple controls make it the perfect heat pump for first time users, says the company.

Installers do not need to have F-Gas qualifications to fit the heat pump, and it is very accessible, with only the need to remove a

few screws to access key components for maintenance.

It comes with up to seven years’ guarantee.

Solid paste water treatment for commercial and industrial use DosaFil is a water treatment solution in a solid paste, making it easier and safer to handle and reducing the risk of leakage or spillage.

Unlike traditional water treatment solutions, which come in liquid form and are added to the circulating water in the heating or cooling system, DosaFil uses active ingredients in a solid form that rapidly dissolve when added to the systems.

This also removes the need to transport heavy plastic containers that cannot be

The Registration GB App provides the full functionality of the web-based Viessmann Installer Portal and is available on Android and Apple platforms.

The app replaces the previous Registration UK App. You’ll need to download the

new app, and log in with the Viessmann Account you use to access the Viessmann Installer Portal or the Partner Portal.

skills&training Start your MCS heat pump journey with NIBE NIBE’s Pro Installer Partnership Scheme is a streamlined and professional route to becoming an MCS-certified heat pump installer, through training and certification.

Digital tools, technical support and business support help heating installers demonstrate compliance with MCS standards, including the quality management system (QMS).

Packages are personalised, whether heating engineers are already certified or need help navigating the certification process after completing the

relevant qualifications, or are new to the world of heat pumps.

Heating engineers can become qualified via the LCL Awards Level 3 Award in Heat Pump Installation and LCL/CIPHE Low Temperature Heating and Hot Water Systems qualification.
