nside this issue you can read more details about the government’s Heat and Buildings Strategy and how it could affect the work you do now and in the future.

The strategy itself is a long document, at more than 200 pages, so we’ve focused on the potential impact on the domestic installation market, particularly on how the government intends to decarbonise the heating and hot water in the UK’s homes in the lead-up to 2050.

Next spring will see the launch of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, a grant of £5,000 for homeowners to switch out their gas boilers and switch on to heat pumps. It’s due to run for three years, but the £450 million allocated to the scheme is just a drop in the ocean compared with the scale of the task required to achieve the stated ambition of fitting 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028.

It appears that claiming the Boiler Upgrade Scheme will be down to installers rather than homeowners, with the installer reclaiming the grant after the installation is complete. And a whole heap of paperwork, of course.

Gas Safe ads showing on host of media channels G

as Safe Register’s multichannel ad campaign is continuing through the winter, raising awareness and recognition of the Register.

The mass-media ads focus on ‘The Sign’ that people are safe in their home and have peace of mind because they know that Gas Safe Register is the sign of legally registered gas engineers. Ads have already appeared on TV, radio, national newspapers in print and online and in a whole range of digital formats.

Social media has been playing a crucial role too, with the Register promoting the TV ad on Facebook.

Jack, the main character from the TV ads, is currently featuring in a series of posts right up to the festive period.

Every week a new element is added to the story of how Jack makes sure that he puts safety first by using a Gas Safe registered engineer to check his gas appliances. The Register has been adding traction to the stories by adding polls – for example, asking whether people have turned their heating on yet. The answer then features in the following post and helps to continue the story and provide longevity.

The campaign will run until March 2022.

Holiday cottage owner fined £120,000 over gas safety breaches Burghill Farms, a partnership trading as Dalhousie Estates, and Piers Le Cheminant have been fined after the occupant of a holiday cottage was found collapsed in a bathroom heated by a portable propane gas cabinet heater.

Forfar Sheriff Court heard that in 2015, the victim, Thomas Oliver Hill, was staying with his girlfriend and her family at Glenmark Cottage, Tarfside, near Edzell in North-east Scotland. They were renting the cottage from Mr Le Cheminant, who in turn rented the property from Burghill Farms. Mr Le Cheminant paid

20 per cent of his rental income to Burghill Farms.

On 28 October 2015, Mr Hill had taken a bath in the bathroom, which was heated by the gas heater. His girlfriend and her family became concerned when he did not appear after an hour. They knocked on the bathroom door and then forced entry when they didn’t receive a response. Mr Hill was found collapsed next to the bathroom door and died later. A postmortem found that the cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning.

The HSE investigation found that Burghill Farms and Piers

Le Cheminant did not have a suitable and sufficient system of maintenance in place for the cabinet heaters. These were placed in rooms that were too small for the size of heater to be used safely due to a lack of suitable ventilation. However, these failings could not be proven to be causally connected to the death of Mr Hill.

Burghill Farms of Brechin Castle, Brechin, Angus, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 36(2)(a) of the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 1998 and Section 33(1)(c) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. The

company was fined £120,000.

Piers Le Cheminant, of Poundsgate, Newton Abbot, Devon, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 35 of the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 1998, and Section 33(1)(c) the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. He was fined £2,000.

Fake fitter falsely claimed to be registered

Approved kit. Before starting, make sure your equipment meets all legal safety standards (BS EN61243-3).

Lock out. Identify the point of isolation, lock it off, and place warning tags on the equipment.

Initial prove. Test your voltage indicator against the proving unit to make sure it’s working properly.

Voltage test. Use your voltage indicator to confirm that there are no dangerous voltages in the circuit you are about to work on.

An illegal gas fitter from Burnley has been given a 15-month community order for carrying out gas work while not being registered.

Preston Crown Court heard that Adam Kilbride falsely claimed to be Gas Safe registered when he worked at two properties in Burnley in December 2018 and January 2019. After complaints about installation defects, Gas Safe inspectors found that the

work was At Risk as well as Not to Current Standards.

Adam Kilbride of Burnley pleaded guilty to breaches of Regulations 3(3), 26(1) and 3(7) of the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 1998. He was sentenced to a 15-month community order and 100 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay £400 compensation to the homeowner plus costs of £6,000.

Landlord failed to comply with Improvement Notice A landlord has been sentenced to a 12-month community order for failing to maintain the gas appliances at her rental property.

Colchester Magistrates’ Court heard that landlord Hannah Leek, from Loughborough, failed to have the gas appliances at her rental property in Tendring, Essex, regularly inspected and maintained and failed to provide a landlord’s gas safety record.

Ms Leek also failed to

comply with an Improvement Notice issued by the HSE, which required her to take action to deal with these issues.

Hannah Leek of Wicklow Close, Shepshed, Loughborough, pleaded guilty to breaching the Gas Safety Installation & Use Regulations 1998, and Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. She was sentenced to a 12-month community order and 100 hours of unpaid work, and ordered to pay £3,292.05 costs plus a victim surcharge of £85. www.gassaferegister.co.uk 09

New Vaillant customer centre showcases latest heating technologies Vaillant has unveiled a new Customer Experience Centre in an official opening attended

by Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury Helen Whately.

Based at the company’s UK headquarters in Belper, Derbyshire, the new Customer Experience Centre will support both Vaillant and sister brand Glow-worm, reinforcing the history of ongoing innovation right through to the latest advanced heat pump and hydrogen boiler technologies.

The opening follows the recent announcement of a £3 million investment to expand the Belper manufacturing facility to build aroTHERM plus heat pumps alongside its boilers. The move will make Vaillant one of the only UK heating appliance manufacturers to produce both high-efficiency gas boilers and heat pumps, as it seeks to meet the complex

decarbonisation challenge with a multi-technology approach.

UK and Ireland managing director Klaus Jesse says: “As we all know, the heating sector remains on the cusp of, arguably, the biggest challenge since its inception as it looks towards the low-carbon economy. Inherently for us, innovation lies at the heart of this as we continue to bring new products and services to the domestic and infrastructure markets through both the Vaillant and Glow-worm brands – but we know from talking to customers it can be difficult to keep up.

HMRC reminder HMRC is reminding gas engineers that if you are selfemployed, you are responsible for reporting your income to HMRC, via self-assessment. You must register by 5 October in the second tax year of your business – and you could be fined if you do not do so.

Failing to report income through self-assessment could lead to HMRC imposing interest charges and penalties.

Make sure you’re stocked up with genuine spares this winter, says Baxi As another busy heating season gets under way, Baxi is urging gas engineers to make sure they have enough supplies of genuine spares ahead of time so that they always have a quality part available when they need it.

Asif Ali, commercial manager for Baxi Genuine Parts, says: “To ensure no homes are left without vital heating and hot water during what is expected to be a particularly cold winter, it makes perfect sense to plan in advance and order supplies now. Any increased need for repair work could mean the availability of spares is pushed to the limit this year, particularly as some areas

of the industry have been facing supply chain difficulties.

“While we haven’t yet experienced any issues with our own stock of genuine spares, global supply chain challenges impacting future trends can be difficult to predict. To ensure there are no delays in completing essential maintenance work, installers are therefore advised to start building up their own supply of more commonly needed parts now, to reduce time spent sourcing spares further on down the line.”

Baxi also emphasises the importance of choosing genuine spares. “A large proportion of

Viessmann set for full hydrogen infrastructure trials The first practical deployment of Viessmann’s 100 per cent hydrogen boiler will take place in Germany. As part of the SmartQuart pilot project, a complete hydrogen infrastructure will be created, from the generation of renewable electricity for electrolysis, to the storage and distribution of the hydrogen created, and its use for heat and

power in industry and transport.

The company’s hydrogen boiler prototypes are currently running on test beds in the research and development centre at the company’s headquarters in Allendorf before approval, endurance testing and deployment in heating systems.

The boiler is based on Viessmann’s Vitodens boiler, adapted to run on pure hydrogen.

“We have taken a huge step towards realising the goals of the Paris Agreement in the building sector,” says Markus Klausner, chief technology officer of Viessmann Climate Solutions SE. Other condensing technology systems are also in development, including fuel cells and CHP units intended for use with hydrogen.

‘CO affects cognitive ability of older adults’ Prolonged exposure to low-level carbon monoxide increasingly impairs cognitive ability in older adults, a new study has found.

A three-year project, led by Beth Cheshire as part of her PhD at Lancaster University, sought to investigate the effects of CO on older people and found that the negative effect of ageing on cognition was worsened by greater overall exposure.

Beth says: “The results provide preliminary evidence of the neuropsychological effects of chronic low-level CO exposure in older adults.”

Older adults are more vulnerable to CO exposure because of a combination of

factors, from increased susceptibility to pre-existing disease, and they’re also likely to spend more time at home, further increasing the risk.

Adrian McConnell, head of Charitable Operations at the CO Research Trust, which funded the project, says: “Determining the levels at which low-level chronic exposures become harmful would be invaluable in informing policy, guidelines and safety technology in order to keep those most vulnerable safe.

“There is a significant knowledge gap in this area, which is why we were keen to fund this project. However, it is clear that there is more work to be done.”

Pressurisation in installations is essential for controlling the quality of the system water and for optimising performance and lifespan, says the company.

Bags full of fun at Installer Stock Take an amusement park full of sheep, a bank holiday weekend, a man who’s determined to put the smile back on people’s faces, and what have you got? A family festival that’s going from strength to strength.

ore than 150 gas engineers and their families flocked to The Big Sheep amusement park over the August Bank Holiday for the Installer Stock festival. And they hardly talked about work at all, according to organiser Neil Bunning – they were too busy listening to music and enjoying the atmosphere in North Devon.

For many, it was their second time at the festival, says Neil, who is managing director of IMI Hydronic. The idea had come to him in 2020 at the height of the Covid pandemic. Many gas engineers had lost income and been talking about how they were struggling during the lockdowns, both financially and with their

mental health. Neil wanted to try to create something that they could look forward to.

“My idea wasn’t originally about a festival, it was about whether we could get people together for two days and put some money into the local economy,” he says.

He got in touch with The Big Sheep, which had created a Covid-safe outdoor arena and was working with local arts venue the Palladium to put on gigs – and between them Installer Stock was born.

at a social distance, and this year gas engineers and their families made up around one-quarter of attendees at the weekend, which was headlined by ska and reggae band the Dualers.

“Manufacturer events are normally very male-dominated,” says Neil, “but I’ve got a young family and I wondered if families would get together – and they did.

“They were like-minded people who just happen to be in the

same industry, enjoying each other’s company.”

The ticket price of £140 for a family of four covered the whole weekend’s events, including entrance to all The Big Sheep’s attractions. The festival was non-profit-making and, as an added bonus, IMI gave gas engineers special ‘ewe-ros’ on-site vouchers to spend on food and drinks.

There’s good news for next year too, as Neil is working on plans to make Installer Stock even more ‘ram-tastic’ in 2022. n

Michael Hole saw this ‘live’ gas isolation valve in the property where he was working: he removed the valve and capped the gas supply using appropriate fittings.

Thomas Watts’ customer suspected that vegetation was the cause of their boiler breakdown. And they were right: Tom discovered it had grown right through to the boiler via the air intake flue duct.

Matthew Anderson was asked to trace and repair a gas escape. The unsleeved pipework had corroded and gas had entered into the cavity wall. Someone had tried to disguise the pipe as sleeved by putting a small section of copper sleeving at either end. Matthew re-installed the pipework correctly in a full sleeve.

This cooker had been relocated by the householder using plumbing fittings.

David Spicer immediately refitted it correctly.

Matthew Andrews could see that this boiler chimney installation had not been sealed and secured correctly: he rectified the installation by sealing with a sand and cement mortar mix inside and outside.

He was horrified to find the severely corroded casing with a gaping hole in the top, from an old positivepressure boiler. Mark disconnected the boiler from the gas supply and a new appliance has now been fitted.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme: Grants of up to £6,000 will be available from spring 2022 to encourage homeowners to change their fossil fuel boilers to appliances that use a low-carbon heat source. Registered Gas Engineer looks at the detail of how the government anticipates the scheme will operate.

T

he Boiler Upgrade Scheme will be available in England and Wales from spring 2022 until 2025, providing grants for installing low-carbon heating in homes and some non-domestic settings.

The details of how it’s likely to work were released alongside publication of the Heat and Buildings Strategy just ahead of last month’s COP26 in Glasgow.

Regulations will be brought in ahead of the launch and the government says it will be working closely with the scheme’s administrator Ofgem on the detail, having consulted with potential users.

The Heat and Buildings Strategy sets out the government’s ambition to install 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028 and scale up low-carbon heating. As part of this, the £450 million Boiler Upgrade Scheme replaces the Clean Heat Grant and will run for three years.

Ofgem will be responsible for handling enquiries, reviewing applications, making payments and monitoring compliance.

How much is the grant?

The scheme will provide grants of £5,000 towards the installation and capital costs of air source heat pumps and biomass boilers, and grants of £6,000 for ground source heat pumps.

The scheme will support systems up to 45kW. Applying for the grant Application will be in two stages and installer-led for both application and redemption.

Installers – not their customers – will need to provide a quote at the voucher application stage. They will need to get approval from their customers as part of the process.

Installers will then redeem the voucher after the installation has been completed: the government says it’s committed to ensuring prompt payment.

Vouchers will be valid for three months for air source heat pumps and biomass boilers, and six months for ground source heat pumps. Unused vouchers that expire or are returned will be 20 December 2021

‘recycled’ and the public will be able to see whether vouchers are available.

The government says it will work closely with Ofgem on the detail of the scheme’s administration and function, learning from the experiences of the Renewable Heat Incentive and the Green Homes Grant.

Qualifications Installers – and the installed system – must be MCS-certified or equivalent and a member of a consumer code such as RECC (the Renewable Energy Consumer Code) or HIES. They will need to show evidence of their certification when they apply for the voucher, and MCS certificates will need to be submitted when the voucher is redeemed.

MCS is expected to consult on reducing admin costs for membership ahead of the scheme’s launch. It’s due to introduce a revised Heat Pump Standard (MIS 3005), through which installers can be certified in design or installation or both.

Installers will not need to be registered with TrustMark.

At a glance • The property must be suitable for the installation and have a valid EPC • Installers must provide a quote when they apply for the grant • Installers must be MCS-certified or equivalent • Installers will redeem the voucher after installation is complete • Complete installation must be MCS-certified • Vouchers are valid for 3 months for air source heat pumps and biomass boilers, and 6 months for ground source heat pumps • The scheme will be administered by Ofgem.

Compliance Installers will need to provide certain information at the time of application – for example, showing that a biomass installation is in a rural area. After work has been completed, they will need to provide further evidence to redeem the voucher, such as an MCS certificate.

Ofgem will have powers to make on-site checks before the grant is paid to confirm eligibility of the installed system. The scheme administrator will also have the powers to:

• Require corrective action where non-compliance is identified.

• Revoke vouchers or recoup grant payments from installers where corrective action is not taken, or in cases of serious non-compliance.

Property suitability and technologies To ensure installations are only undertaken in suitable properties, a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) less than 10 years old must be shown. There must be no

If the homeowner wants to have insulation fitted at the same time, then a new EPC showing that the work has been carried out can be shown when the voucher is redeemed.

Heat pumps will only be eligible where they replace existing fossil fuel systems or direct electric systems and must have a minimum SCOP of 2.8 – an increase on the 2.5 rating required for domestic RHI. Biomass boilers must be capable of using a liquid to deliver heat. Biomass boilers will only be supported in rural areas and where they replace existing fossil fuel systems, where that system is not fuelled by mains gas, or direct electric systems.

Heat meters and those that specifically measure the electricity usage of heat pumps are NOT required, although the government says it recognises the benefits that smart meters could bring, especially to enable access to ‘time of use’ tariffs. ■

Scotland targets fuel poverty as well as zero carbon The Scottish government also published its Heat in Buildings Strategy in the autumn, setting out its pathway to net zero by 2045 – five years earlier than targeted in England and Wales.

The Strategy will require more than 1 million homes and the equivalent of 50,000 nondomestic buildings to convert to zero heat emissions by 2030.

The government has fuel poverty in its sights too, outlining steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to remove poor energy performance as a driver of fuel poverty.

Interim targets have also been set for a 75 per cent reduction in carbon emissions by 2030, and 90 per cent by 2040.

It’s also set statutory fuel poverty targets requiring that, in 2040, no more than 5 per cent of households are fuel poor, no more than 1 per cent are in extreme fuel poverty and that the

The Scottish government has committed to publish a refreshed Energy Strategy as well as an Energy Just Transition Plan in spring 2022. It says it will use this to further refine its approach to heat in buildings.

It’s also going to create a National Public Energy Agency to accelerate the change in how people heat and use energy in homes and buildings. The

Our Strategy commits to phasing out the need to install new or replacement fossil fuel boilers, and to consult on introducing new legislation and regulations to underpin this transition and ambitious investment programme, but equivalent action from the UK government in reserved areas, such as on energy pricing, will be essential to deliver these commitments.

How the UK will transition to net zero The Net Zero Strategy describes the government’s policies and proposals in all areas of the economy to keep the UK on track to achieve its decarbonisation vision.

T

he government says it’s making the decisions that are needed now to drive investment in new low-carbon technologies.

As these develop, it says it will continue to test its approaches so that it can decide how to scale up to reach its 2050 zero emissions target.

The policies and proposals Power The UK will be powered entirely by clean electricity by 2035, says the government, subject to security of supply. It aims to do this through a combination of technologies: nuclear, including new small modular reactors as well as a large-scale nuclear plant, offshore and onshore wind and solar. All this will be underpinned by flexibility, including storage, gas with CCS, and hydrogen, all designed to help avoid price spikes.

Fuel supply and hydrogen 5GW of hydrogen production capacity has been targeted by 2030, and emissions halved from oil and gas. Current gas prices spikes underline the need to get off hydrocarbons as quickly as possible, it says.

A new Industrial Decarbonisation and Hydrogen Revenue Support (IDHRS) scheme will fund new hydrogen and industrial carbon capture business models.

Industry Hydrogen, carbon capture and renewable energy will accelerate decarbonisation in clusters around the UK, accounting for around half of the UK’s industrial emissions.

Heat and Buildings By 2035, all new heating appliances installed in homes and workplaces will be low-carbon technologies such as heat pumps or hydrogen boilers. But this will be a gradual transition and no decision on the future of hydrogen heating will be made until 2026. No new gas boilers will be sold by 2035.

The government expects the cost of heat pumps to fall quickly and hopes they will be as cheap to buy and run as a gas boiler by the end of this decade.

It’s also considering rebalancing energy costs by removing levies away from gas and re-allocating them to electricity, so lowering electricity bills for consumers.

Transport The government has already committed to stop sales of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 and says all cars must be ‘zero emissions-capable’ by 2035.

There will be zero-emission vehicle grants and funding for electric vehicle infrastructure, with a focus on residential street charging, as well as money to support the electrification of vehicles and supply chains.

Four thousand new zeroemission buses and a net-zero rail network are targeted for 2050, with all diesel-only trains removed by 2040.

It’s also expanding zero emission road freight trials.

In the air, the government says it’s kickstarting the commercialisation of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with funding to develop plants, and an ambition of 10 per cent SAF by 2030.

Natural resources Farmers will receive support for low-carbon farming to increase productivity and enable more efficient use of land, such as through agroforestry.

Around 280,000 hectares of peat in England will be restored by 2050, and more woodlands will be planted, up to 30,000 hectares a year by the end of this Parliament.

There will also be funding for local authorities to collect food waste from all homes from 2025.

Greenhouse gas removals The government acknowledges the difficulty of removing residual emissions from the hardest-todecarbonise sectors, including aviation, agriculture and industry.

It’s proposing that greenhouse gas removals will be supported initially by the government before moving towards a market-based framework.

Supporting the transition At least £1.5 billion of funding will be behind the drive to net-zero, with the aim of supporting the ‘innovation chain’ to reduce costs and support key technologies and ideas to meet net zero. The government says it will work with the private sector to provide the finance needed, back training and skills, support workers to retrain and upskill, and build low-carbon industries.

It says it will reform the skills system so that training providers, employers and learners are incentivised and equipped to deliver the transition to net zero.

A new Sustainability Disclosures Regime will enforce mandatory climate-related financial disclosures, and the government also says it will publish an update every year against set targets to achieve its climate goals. ■ www.gassaferegister.co.uk 23

Ventilation requirements for pipework in ducts or voids Do you know how to calculate the amount of ventilation required to prevent a build-up of gas in a floor void or duct? Gas Safe Register technical support officer Katrina Martin sets out the requirements.

W

e have all come across gas pipework that runs in floor voids, ducting and similar circumstances. In many of these situations, ventilation is required to prevent a build-up of gas within the void, as this can become dangerous.

Ventilation Gas pipes in ducts and voids need ventilation to ensure that any minor leakage of gas – which may be within permissible limits and therefore not raise a concern during a conventional gas tightness test – can be cleared to prevent a build-up reaching dangerous levels.

BS 6891 advises that the ventilation provided in a duct or void is intended to clear minor leakages and it is NOT practical to provide ventilation that would clear a gas escape caused by a major failure of the pipe.

The level of ventilation is normally dictated by the cross-sectional area of the duct, as shown on the right.

Fire safety Any ventilation provision must be considered carefully to ensure that it does not conflict with any fire safety measures and other building standards in place for that building, such as noise or air transfer.

This means that any ventilation provided for the duct or void should not communicate with any protected area. You should contact the building’s designer or relevant local authority Building Control to confirm whether a specific space or area is classified as being fire-protected.

For vertical shafts and ducts, the required openings should be provided at both high and low level. For horizontal ducts and ceiling voids, the required openings should be provided at either end.

Let’s examine how to measure and calculate this: To calculate the cross-sectional area, multiply the height (A) by the width (B). The length of the duct is not relevant when calculating the cross-sectional area.

So, for instance, if the height of the duct is 50mm (0.05m), and the width is 800mm (0.8m), to calculate the correct cross-sectional area, you mutiply 0.05 by 0.8, to give you the answer of 0.04m2.

By referencing the table, you can see that the ventilation requirements for this sized duct is the cross-sectional area, or 0.04m2.

So, the calculation is: 0.05m (A) x 0.8m (B) = 0.04m2 For pipework exceeding 35mm in commercial-type premises, the ventilation requirements for larger size ducts can be found in IGEM/UP/2 Edition 3, Table 16.

Gas pipework installed in a

protected area within a duct that contains an inspection hatch or opening that communicates with that protected area must be at least the same fire rating as the area in which it is fitted.

Pipework installed in a protected area shall be ventilated to outside air at both high and low level. The ventilation requirements depend on the size and cross-sectional area of the duct, and therefore Table 6 of BS 6891 should be consulted.

Note: Natural ventilation shall be used in this instance, not mechanical ventilation.

Pipework is not considered to be contained within a protected area if it is separated from the protected area by a fire-resistant duct. The fireresistant properties of that construction must be as recommended by the relevant guidance document.

Fire stopping must also be taken into consideration when pipework is installed in a protected structure. If pipework is running in floors or walls, you must ensure that openings are kept as small and as few as practical so as not to impair fire resistance. ■ www.gassaferegister.co.uk 25

Q A

Do all FGAs give me all the readings I need?

All FGA models, including the latest app-based ones, will give you the basic readings required to follow BS 7967.

However, different models will have additional functions to assist with other tasks, such as calculating efficiency, excess air and differential temperatures.

Some models and kit options may include a manometer for performing tightness tests or a variety of pressure readings.

You may want to start with a basic model and build up your kit over time, so shop around to find what works for you.

I see these new styles of FGA that connect to apps on your phone and tablet – are they more complicated or time-intensive to use?

Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, you’ve probably started using this technology already in other parts of your work, such as apps when fitting smart thermostats, or gas rating or pipe sizing – or even the satnav in your van.

The new app-based style of FGAs may look different but they work in an intuitive, familiar way and they’re designed to make your life easier not harder.

What are the advantages of connecting to an app?

Undoubtedly one of the biggest advantages is that you can be greener and help the environment by emailing reports rather than printing them. It also saves money because you no longer need to buy a printer or replacement rolls of paper.

Connecting to an app gives you greater flexibility: you can easily send the reports to multiple recipients in one go rather than producing lots of paper copies – one for the homeowner, one for the landlord, one for yourself, etc.

Some apps can provide GPS tagging on the reports to prove where the readings were taken, potentially reducing the need

for unnecessary call-backs.

Connecting to the app also allows for more detailed reports, including gas safety records that can be created from the FGA readings.

The high-resolution LCD on your phone or tablet allows for a clearer, colourful, traffic-light indication of readings, and more descriptive hints and tips.

Some models offer better battery life because they aren’t powering a processor, keypad, or display, such as the screenless DC710 (pictured).

Apps can also help to streamline your business by reducing paperwork and making it easier to find your finished jobs.

Are the new styles of FGA that connect to apps easier to maintain?

In theory they should be better because, even though they use the same internal components as a traditional FGA, some don’t have keypads, dials or LCDs that could be costly to repair if damaged.

Look for those that have additional measures to avoid unnecessary downtime, such

as water ingress protection in the sampling probe, or a robust design to protect against accidental damage.

Whichever model you choose, it’s always important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to keep the unit running correctly.

How long is the warranty?

The warranty varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and from model to model but generally they have a minimum of five years with some as long as 12 years. However, to maintain the warranty, your flue gas analyser needs to be returned every year for calibration and re-certification.

Do I need to send my FGA off for annual calibration?

Yes, it’s a requirement of BS 7967 and it’s important to ensure that the results are accurate. Try to return your FGA

before your busy period because having a well-maintained, in-calibration instrument is essential for you to carry on working.

Most analysers now alert you before the annual calibration is due, and you can also book them directly via app-based FGAs.

Q A

What’s the cost and how long does it take?

Most manufacturers offer a fixed-cost schedule, and you should factor in these costs when you’re considering buying a new FGA. Turnaround times can vary but most manufacturers have out-of-hours systems as well as payment options.

However, in most cases, a standard service and recertification should take no more than a couple of days for your FGA to be fully checked and tested to ensure it’s ready for another year. ■

2022 goes back to the future Jonathan Kane, CEO of Kane International, gives his review of 2021 and looks ahead at what could lie in store for 2022 – and beyond.

I

t’s time to take stock and prepare for 2022, and that means looking back at what 2021 has meant for everyone.

With so many working from home, people have had the time and inclination to make home improvements. So if 2020 was about Covid, and 2021 was the year of home improvement, what’s next for 2022?

Good COP/Bad COP As a country, how do we reach net-zero CO2 emissions without returning to the Stone Age? It’s been a challenge digesting all the news that has come out of the COP26 conference, with lots of new initiatives being announced. The choices that lie ahead seem stark.

Take off-grid homes, for example – the government seems to have decided that heat pumps are the only solution, ignoring the practical benefits of converting oil boilers to carbon-free hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).

The government also wants more heat networks, also known as district heating. These systems work in new developments and flats when you have time to plan and install all the necessary controls, but are very challenging to retrofit into existing homes.

When it comes to heat pumps, the government has committed to giving £5,000 each to 90,000 lucky homeowners to help them upgrade their properties, instead of insulating nearly 400,000 inefficient homes and reducing energy bills for the people least able to afford them.

Heat pumps are great for deep home renovation and new-builds but, for most of us, they’re a real challenge, requiring outdoor space, a hot water tank, new radiators and pipework. This is simply not realistic to install after an emergency breakdown on a cold day in January.

Gas gas gas The ban on gas boilers won’t happen yet. Since most of us use gas for heating and hot water, it would be nearly impossible to

remove them before the end of their useful life. As the Prime Minister has said, no one is going to “seize your gas boiler”.

Instead, the government will only ban new boilers when there are affordable replacements available. It helps that there will soon be gas boilers that are 100 per cent hydrogen-ready – these systems are already in trials.

Converting gas into hydrogen is an expensive process with tonnes of leftover carbon to capture and store – no one has yet found an economic way to do this.

As heat pump sales grow, costs will fall and the installation of hydrogen boilers will be more attractive.

Electricity suppliers will also want customers to use their green energy and are likely to pay or employ installers to fit heat pumps, recovering costs with five or 10-year PCP or PCH car-type contracts, which many homeowners will like.

It’s also likely, within 10 years, that gas and oil boilers will be banned from off-grid homes, new developments and extensive renovation projects, especially in Scotland and Wales, where devolved authorities move at

Here’s how I think this brave new world might look in 10 years’ time: It’s a cold day in January 2031, the UK is on its way to reaching net zero CO2 and you’ve just got into your electric van, with your KANE LINK analyser futureproofed for all test conditions.

This morning you’re off to show a homeowner how their new heat pump is performing outside, using wireless measurements streamed into your analyser.

Then you’ll test another customer’s 100 per cent hydrogen boiler and cooker for NOx and O2 levels using your analyser, before testing an oil boiler that has been converted to HVO. Your final job for the day is to carry out a traditional CO/CO2 landlord’s gas safety record check on a combi boiler before going home to recharge your van and yourself.

Gas engineers need to learn about heat pumps. Customers trust engineers’ advice because of their independence, and want to hear views on when it is best to install new technology.

They won’t want a simplistic ‘head in the sand’ answer and, if you’re not open minded, they’ll go elsewhere – perhaps to an electrician or energy supplier keen to make a quick sale with a long-term contract, losing you your customer.

Energy suppliers see an opportunity to convert more than 28 million gas consumers and they won’t be afraid to make

unrealistic promises with large marketing budgets.

The risk is that engineers will have to become a utility contractor or employee – it’s fine if that’s what you want, but most engineers we meet became independent for a reason.

Don’t forget that most consumers would prefer your unbiased opinion over a big company’s ‘soft sell’ approach, so what you know and your opinion on these new technologies will become an even more important part of your business.

Perhaps the future’s not so scary after all. ■

Reset and recalibrate Ensuring that your flue gas analyser (FGA) is maintained regularly and suitably goes without saying – but the whys, hows and wherefores take a little more digging into.

Here, Anton by Crowcon breaks down the calibration process and shares its best practice.

D

uring the calibration process, the FGA’s sensors are checked to ensure that they take an accurate measurement of a known concentration of certified calibration gas. To do this, the reading needs to be adjusted to match the gas concentration through an initial sensor calibration of the new unit, or replacement sensor for the existing unit.

Another type of calibration is a field or drift calibration, which can be defined as a slow change in the response of a gauge over time during normal use. Using the existing instrument, the operator brings the reading back after the drift occurs. Measuring the amount of drift in the gauge during the calibration process is vital to see how far into inaccurate territory the drift has moved, and to rule out any and all measurement errors and associated issues moving forward.

Regularity is key Sensors naturally degrade over time and they each have a different lifespan of optimum operation, whether they are electrochemical, catalytic bead or infrared sensors. Regular calibration is necessary to raise the gain levels and bring the sensor back in line to ensure accurate readings. If devices remain unchecked, they will give incorrect readings.

Once the sensor reaches a certain point, it cannot be brought back into the correct position and this is when a new sensor needs to be installed; the calibration process indicates when the sensor has reached this point and must be replaced.

The calibration procedure First, the device needs to be set to calibration mode: this will feed a test gas of a known concentration on to the sensors to see how they respond. The gain levels will be adjusted within the sensor to match the readings

to the concentration fed in and mitigate any drop off.

The new settings are locked into the device’s firmware and a calibration report is simulated,

gases. During usage, gases are drawn from the flue and passed over the sensors to gain a reading. Often when the device is powered down, after a test is completed, some of that noxious gas remains inside the unit and becomes trapped. This can cause damage to the sensors and electronics through corrosion and can shorten the life of the unit.

It’s important to not keep your FGA in the van overnight as you risk condensation forming and causing water damage. Taking it indoors with you at night also reduces the risk of theft.

Another handy tip to protect your FGA unit is to only use approved chargers with outputs that are tailored for the target device. Using non-approved chargers can cause damage to the battery and lessen charge retention, or even impairment to the battery and IC chips in the device itself.

Checking the device’s probes and connector pipes is also important as these can perish over time. Any splits or cracks in the rubber house will cause incorrect readings and so performing periodic checks on your hoses to ensure they are in good operating condition is a useful habit. ■

Choose the right flue gas analyser How do you know what type of flue gas analyser is the best fit for you?

hoosing your next flue gas analyser (FGA) means considering several factors, and not just the price. Do you need an FGA for domestic work? Will you also be working on commercial projects? Whatever your job requires, you need to make sure you choose the right FGA. One of the first things to consider is the type of work the FGA will be carrying out on a day-to-day basis. If you only work on domestic heating systems then the options are easier, but you may still want to check that any analyser on your shortlist can cover all your fuel requirements, and is as capable on oil-fired or solid-fuel applications as it is on gas-fired systems.

Centres and Assessments Once again, we’re pleased to publish our annual directory of the UK’s ACS assessment centres and the qualifications they offer.

We’ve contacted more than 250 centres, checking that they’re open and providing assessment and re-assessment to gas engineers to take their mandatory five-yearly qualifications – and upskill in new gas competencies.

It’s been another year of upheaval. The first quarter saw another national lockdown due to Covid-19, with many gas engineers unable to take their assessments. Wiser adds controllers for complete home heating solution

Navien’s range of condensing gas boilers includes four combi and four system models, with outputs from 20kW to 40kW. The range is OpenTherm-ready, allowing for instant access to the latest heating control technology.

Every Navien NCB gas boiler has a stainless-steel heat exchanger and digital display panel, with 40kW models benefiting from a turndown ratio of 10:1. These quiet-running units use 60/100mm plastic flues and are supplied with a free LPG conversion kit. The range also offers flue length capabilities of up to 21m, for flexible siting.

The intuitive Smart Plus control includes smart weather forecasting and geofencing capabilities to ensure comfort and energy efficiency, while all devices are three-zone ready and have smartphone connectivity. Adding the control to the gas boilers also improves energy efficiencies, raising their overall ErP rating to A+.

An underfloor heating controller and electrical heat switch have been added to Drayton’s intuitive Wiser heating control system, providing control of different types of heating configuration.

With the introduction of the new dedicated heat pump setting, Wiser can now be used with any type of heating system. These additions are an integral part of Wiser’s development into a full smart and sustainable home system. As part of this transition, the Wiser app has been renamed Wiser Home.

The underfloor heating controller and electrical heat switch enable users to control both electric radiators and underfloor heating via the Wiser Home app, in addition to the standard radiators that most will still have in their homes.

The underfloor heating controller can be integrated into all heating systems and configurations. It provides heating and cooling functions and can control up to six zones on separate schedules when paired with a room thermostat.

The electrical heat switch has a 16A relay for electrical heating and, because it is hard wired, can act as a range extender for the entire Wiser Home system. The switch is compatible with electric radiators and towel rails, electrical underfloor heating, plinth heaters and infrared panel heaters.

Ariston pumps up its Nuos water heaters Ariston has unveiled its Nuos Plus Wi-Fi heat pump water heater.

Available in a 200 litre direct (200D) and 250 litre indirect (250I) model, the units combine a floor-standing unvented cylinder with an air source heat pump water heater. They have COP of up to 3.14 and produce only 51dB of noise, similar to a fridge freezer.

The new models have an extended operating temperature range of -10°C to 42°C and are 80 per cent more energy efficient than traditional cylinders of the same capacity. The Nuos Plus Wi-Fi 200D heats up from cold in less than four hours, and BusBridgeNet technology means the Nuos Plus Wi-Fi 250I can be fully integrated with Ariston’s boilers via the company’s Sensys controls.

The heat pump water heaters have three different modes. Green ensures that the only heating source is the heat pump itself and the maximum hot water temperature achievable is 62°C. For faster reheat times, in Comfort mode the heating element either replaces or assists the heat pump to replenish the water as quickly as possible. Boost switches on the heat pump and heating element at the same time until the desired temperature is reached.
