Peter Fabian came across this piece of DIY remedial work when called out to investigate a breakdown. He had installed the boiler some years ago, before a carport was installed, and so he was quite surprised to find a ‘plume kit’ connected using electrical insulation tape. The boiler was made safe until the issue was rectified.

Trevor Davis found a blocked chimney/flue when asked to remove a gas fire. The inset fire was sealed to the marble with silicon and had never been serviced. Black bags had been filled with insulation and pushed into the chimney/flue before installation. The customer said they had stopped using the gas fire after suffering from headaches. Tom Ellis’s customer had fitted a new condensing chimney/ flue to his old standard-efficiency boiler, terminating in front of the door. The installation was made safe.

Tanvir Ahmed was asked to replace a boiler. This chimney/flue had been in a void for the past 18 years or so with no inspection hatches fitted.

When Jason Cook arrived to carry out a gas safety check, he immediately spotted that the tenants had built a wooden structure covering the chimney/ flue terminal. The chimney/flue had been extended outside using black plastic downpipe and PVC tape. The appliance was made safe, and a new extended chimney/flue has been fitted.

Services’ engineer says he thought he’d seen everything until he saw this installation. Oli Jones found an asbestos chimney/flue connected to a restaurant’s commercial openflued water heater, which failed the spillage test. The appliance had no ventilation. The customer refused to have the appliance made safe so Oli called the ESP, which attended and made safe.

Dene Rozier was called out to a water leak on a fire and back boiler unit and found that the combustion box was extremely corroded. It was made safe and has now been replaced.
