KANE is offering one lucky gas engineer the chance to win its new KANE458s IAQ CPA1 kit with KANE LINK , worth more than £1,600, in the biggest Christmas competition yet.
At last month’s COP27 summit in Egypt, the UN said progress on cutting carbon emissions since the gathering in Glasgow a year ago had been ‘woefully inadequate’. And despite summer’s hottest temperatures on record in the UK and a much warmer start to winter than usual, real actions to limit climate change seem to be in short supply.
What’s happening with energy policy in the UK isn’t clear cut right now either. The political turmoil that resulted in a change of Prime Minister not once but twice – with the accompanying shuffling around of ministers – and the impact of the war in Ukraine, has meant that political focus has on the short term rather than the long haul for a while now.
The government has stepped in with some financial support for households experiencing sky-high energy bills. But there’s no getting away from the fact that people will be paying twice as much as last year to keep their homes warm and their lights on.
Using less energy has never been so important, and there’s a lot of good advice around about how we can do this. But many households this winter will simply be turning their thermostats down, turning the heating on for less time and inevitably, in some cases, not turning it on at all.

Registered Gas Engineer is written, designed and published by The Team on behalf of Gas Safe Register. 30 Park Street, London, SE1 9EQ
“Inspection of gas work is a vital part of the overall gas safety regime, and a condition of your ongoing Gas Safe registration.
“The overwhelming majority of Gas Safe registered businesses meet their inspection obligation and attend inspection as agreed. Those who do not incur costs for the Register, both financial and in terms of resources, which are ultimately borne by ALL registered businesses through their registration fees.
“When you are invited to attend an inspection, either of your work, or by attending an inspection event, it is vital that you fulfil your obligations as agreed.”
Bob Kerr,Gas Services Director, Gas Safe Register
As a competent and qualified gas business, your work will be inspected by Gas Safe Register periodically, whether you’re newly registered or you’ve been registered for many years. The inspector’s role is not to catch you out: they’re simply making sure that you’re working safely and correctly.
It’s a requirement under the Rules of Registration that you must allow the inspection of gas work undertaken in the course of your business and you must make arrangements for this when you receive a letter or email from the Register advising of an inspection appointment. Failing to attend an arranged inspection comes at a cost to the Register, which ultimately will be reflected in the cost of registration for all businesses and could result in sanctions being applied to your business.
It’s important to be prepared for your inspection and to make sure you’re available at the time that has been arranged.
Inspection appointments cannot be changed unless there are exceptional circumstances.
You’ll need to arrange access to two addresses within around 30 minutes of your business address where you have carried out gas work previously or where you can carry out work such as a landlord’s gas safety record check or a safety check during the inspection.
It is your responsibility to arrange the location and timings; Gas Safe Register will not do this for you.
The inspection will take around 2.5-3 hours. The inspector will gain an understanding of your knowledge from the work you will be undertaking by asking technical questions based on the competencies you hold.
They will inspect your gas safety equipment, which should
What practical work will I have to carry out?
It depends on what work you are showing the inspector, but some of the tests might be:
• A visual inspection of the gas installation and appliances
• A tightness test
• The working pressure at the outlet of the gas meter
• Gas rating appliances
• The inlet working pressure or operating pressures
• Flue gas analysis
• Checking the safety device/s of the nominated appliance
CIRCULATION: Jan-Dec 2021
• Identifying and reporting any unsafe situations.
be available for inspection: this may include tools and equipment that you keep in your vehicle.
The inspector will then observe you carrying out practical gas work that is within your registered work categories. You should make sure you have with you the tools you need to undertake this part of the inspection.
Do I need to show any work records?
You’ll need to show that you keep appropriate records of the gas work you have carried out and have access to suitable documentation to correctly deal with unsafe situations that you may identify through the course of your work.
Applying your competence not just to the work you do but also to the rest of the installation you are working on is just as important to maintain the safety of your customer.
For businesses with 10 or more engineers, the inspection will start with an office-based assessment that assesses how the business manages its gas work. Then the site inspection requirement is proportionate to the number of engineers the business has and the scope of work it undertakes.
If you are eligible for a virtual inspection, this will take around 1.5 hours and you will need a working laptop, computer or tablet to be able to complete the inspection. A statutory identification check will be carried out and, once confirmed, the inspection test can be completed.
You can refer to any reference material during the visit: the inspections are not closed book. However, inspectors will expect you to have sound knowledge of the Unsafe Situations Procedure and gas safety.
What if the inspector doesn’t think I’m competent?
You will be given feedback at the end of your inspection as to whether the inspector believes you have applied your competencies.
If you have not applied your competencies, you will be signposted to seek some further training, and/or you may need to go and read your training manuals. Another inspection will then be booked.
You are responsible for arranging the location for your inspection and for attending. Inspection appointments cannot be changed unless there are exceptional circumstances.
In exceptional circumstances, you can request to rearrange but you must do this immediately by emailing the scheduling team at appointments@ gassaferegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500, selecting option 5 and quoting your registration number.
If you request and agree a new inspection appointment, the new appointment must be kept: failure to do so will result in immediate suspension from the Register until an inspection takes place.
Gas engineers who have been inspected are invited to give their feedback on the process. The names of the engineers who gave the feedback on the right have been withheld.
“Thanks for the excellent audit method you employed last Friday. I was anxious but you put me at my ease. Glad to have dealt with that milestone.”
“Just had my Gas Safe probation inspection with Matthew Haynes. Just thought I would drop an email to say that he made me feel very at ease and relaxed during the process.
“I am an extremely anxious and nervous person but he really made the whole experience a lot easier for me.”
“I was very nervous beforehand but, after we chatted, you put me at ease and I felt relaxed throughout the inspection. Professional but not superior.”
An NHS worker is urging everyone to get a proper gas safety check after he had a lucky escape when an illegal gas worker carried out dangerous work in his house.
Anaesthetic practitioner Tony Deyn unwittingly used an unregistered gas engineer in his Cheshire home. The Immediately Dangerous work could have caused an explosion.
Tony Deyn, 58, who works at Crewe’s Leighton Hospital, had the boiler replaced at his house in Winsford by unregistered Robert Allen, a self-employed contractor trading as A&E Property Services.
After weeks of water leaking from the boiler, Tony called out a registered engineer, who found a catalogue of faults.
Inspection of the work found five separate serious defects, including an unsealed flue, a pressure-relief valve in the wrong place, undersized gas pipework, an uncommissioned appliance,
and corrosion to the gas pipework. Crewe Magistrates’ Court heard that the defects could have led to carbon monoxide leakage, scalding, unsafe combustion and unburned gas release, which could have proved fatal.
Tony says: “I believed the engineer who replaced our boiler was qualified. Unfortunately, that was not the case. We had a series of problems so got a registered engineer out to the house, who was shocked at what he found.
“It seems we were fortunate there wasn’t a serious leak. Me, my family, even my neighbours, are lucky to be alive.
“I know the cost of living is going through the roof right now, but this is one area you can’t afford to cut corners on. It’s really important to get a gas check and make sure it is done by a registered engineer.”
Robert Allen, from Winsford, Cheshire, who carried out the dangerous work, was prosecuted by the HSE. The investigation found that Mr Allen had never been registered. He had fraudulently used the registration number of a completely unconnected company.
He was given a 40-week suspended sentence, 200 hours of community service and ordered to pay costs of more than £5,000.
Tony Deyn adds: “What happened to us shows how things can go wrong. The work we had carried out put our lives at risk.”
Gas distribution networks (GDNs) have been asked to outline their plans for areas of their networks that could be suitable for early conversion to hydrogen.
The government has written to the networks, providing guidance on what needs to be included in their outline plans and how to apply for funding from BEIS to contribute to the costs of developing them. It says work is needed now to deliver plans by 2025 for a possible pilot hydrogen town, so that if hydrogen becomes part of the UK’s decarbonisation pathway in 2026, roll-out is well prepared.
The government is working with GDNs and others on research and development, testing and trials projects, to assess the feasibility, costs and benefits of using low-carbon hydrogen for heating in place of natural gas.
Gas Safe Register has started a major winter advertising campaign through multiple media outlets, helping people stay safe from the dangers of gas. The push started in late October and you may have already seen or heard the ads, which are on TV, on radio, in national newspapers, online and on social media.
The ads refresh the wellreceived ‘The Sign’ messaging and there are additional creative executions of a senior couple, as well as a father and his young child. There’s an updated voiceover on the TV and radio ads, plus the addition of a new ‘sonic brand’, an audio sign-off that helps with familiarity and memorability of the Gas Safe Register brand.
YouTube and Facebook are
carrying digital ads and video, and targeted ads will also appear when consumers search online for numerous home and energy-related topics. The wave of multi-media advertising will continue until early March 2023.
Gas Safe also teamed up with TV presenter Dion Dublin and other industry experts recently to encourage homeowners to get gas-savvy about their home whether they’ve just moved in or have been living there for decades. The story was picked up in national and regional press, and interviews with Dion and the Register’s Bob Kerr appeared on radio and TV.
You can hear the new sonic brand on the TV and radio ads on Gas Safe’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/ gassaferegister
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer visited Vaillant’s HQ in Belper, Derbyshire. He was there to see production of low-carbon technology in action and find out more about how the government and industry can work in partnership to ensure the UK can successfully transition to low-carbon technologies.
The leader of the Opposition viewed the company’s new heat pump line and took a keen interest in the variety of new skills needed to successfully work on the production line as well as the job opportunities created.
He chatted to employees who had retrained or upskilled
to work on the new line.
Sir Keir was also keen to speak with those new to the industry and went on to meet apprentices, graduates and interns. He talked to them about the role they felt they played in helping the UK progress into a new era of heating our homes and how the training support they were receiving is giving them the opportunity to progress their career in low-carbon technologies.
During the visit there was also an open discussion between Sir Keir and the Vaillant management team on how the government and industry can develop and support
a number of pathways to bridge the skills gap and to ensure that the support is there to enable the right investment in production capacity that will get the UK closer to net zero.
Sir Keir said: “The transition to low-carbon technology is an opportunity to be seized; for business, the creation of jobs, the ambitions of our young people, and to achieve energy security to keep bills down. It’s been invaluable to see Vaillant’s work developing heat pumps and advances in hydrogen.
Navien has renamed the two leading models in its NCB gas combi boiler range as the NCB700 ON and NCB500 ON. The move reflects the company’s introduction of ‘Navien ON’, its new technological concept dedicated to putting hot water first.
The energy-saving boiler maximises recirculation of domestic hot water while significantly reducing water wastage. Inspired by the infinity symbol and its similarity to the
letters O and N, the company created Navien ON, reflecting the boilers’ ability to deliver rapid hot water, constant temperatures and hot water for up to three showers at once.
It eliminates delays in hot water delivery to enable washing up and multiple showers to take place simultaneously, with no changes in hot water temperature or comfort. National business manager Jason Davies says: “We’ve successfully created an energy efficient and futureproof method of
prioritising hot water performance, which should be embraced by installers and homeowners alike.”
The NCB700 ON combi gas boiler can deliver hot water for up to three bathrooms simultaneously.
It’s available in two models capable of delivering up to 42kW and 54kW of hot water respectively.
The NCB500 ON can fit inside a cupboard with ease due to its compact 280mm depth, and achieves hot water outputs of up to 41kW.

A new programme of support is designed to empower neurodiverse engineers, students and apprentices to achieve their full potential and thrive in both their professional and personal lives.
The programme includes a ‘Differently Wired Hub’, an online resource offering expert advice, information and content on a variety of neurodiverse conditions, such as autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia.
It’s been launched by engineering charity Foothold, with funding from Neptune Energy and also provides support for engineering students and apprentices, ranging from access to a formal diagnosis, to counselling support to help them understand their feelings about their diagnosis, and financial grants to fund assistive equipment or help with day-to-day living costs.
The Differently Wired Hub is free to anyone in the engineering
community, whether they have been diagnosed, support a neurodivergent individual, or simply want to learn more about neurodiversity.
Employers can also find information and guidance on how to empower their neurodiverse colleagues to thrive and support the success of their business.
Foothold CEO Jane Petit says: “Every day, many neurodiverse engineers face challenges and barriers that prevent them from accessing the opportunities that neurotypical people take for granted. In particular, we know that this leads significant numbers of students and apprentices to drop out of their courses – which has a knock-on effect for the entire engineering workforce.
“By providing this programme of support for both established and aspiring engineers, we hope to build a world where everyone in the industry is empowered to
make the most of their unique talents and capabilities.”
Stuart Redgard, an ambassador for the programme, says: “Having received a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder in May 2022 at the age of 55, I’ve often felt very alone during my neurodiversity journey. But knowing that I now have people I can turn to and who won’t judge me has made a world of difference.
“That’s why this new support from Foothold gives me hope for neurodiverse engineers like me to be empowered to engineer their way, and take advantage of the same opportunities as neurotypical community members – no matter what stage they’re at in their career.”

Nearly nine in 10 Brits are concerned by rising energy costs, a new survey from Resideo has found. The heating controls manufacturer has launched a new campaign to highlight the practical recommendations heating engineers can make to help mitigate rising energy bills.
The campaign’s tagline ‘Every crisis needs a hero – installers, this is your time’ highlights the everyday heroism of heating engineers, showing the true value of their work and the impact they can
have, particularly against current energy prices.
Resideo is supporting heating engineers with digestible information that can be used to initiate conversations with customers about efficiency. Informative online content and
in-person events will run across the heating season and into 2023.
Thousands of UK households do not have adequate heating controls and may be using more energy than they need, says Resideo. The company is helping gas engineers in their recommendations to customers, with advice on using existing heating controls more effectively and the difference that small changes can make, such as upgrading a thermostat.
Rinnai’s new free service designs the ideal heating and hot water system specifically for the customer’s requirements. This ensures savings can be made in purchase and running costs as well as carbon emissions.
The company can advise the customer on what system should be installed, as well as designing heating and hot water that
uniquely complement the site. Operations director Chris Goggin says: “We believe implicitly in this basic premise: we do the best we can, and we achieve what our customers want and expect. And that includes anticipating the future.
“We are using our core competencies of design engineering solutions to suit all
possible future needs and fuels.”
The company says a hybrid heat pump or solar thermal with bioLPG options could be the most suitable solution for off-grid rural locations, especially those with high demand for heating and hot water. And city occupants can consider hybrid designs, including hydrogen-ready units for gas blends of up to 20 per cent.

Peter Fabian came across this piece of DIY remedial work when called out to investigate a breakdown. He had installed the boiler some years ago, before a carport was installed, and so he was quite surprised to find a ‘plume kit’ connected using electrical insulation tape. The boiler was made safe until the issue was rectified.
Trevor Davis found a blocked chimney/flue when asked to remove a gas fire. The inset fire was sealed to the marble with silicon and had never been serviced. Black bags had been filled with insulation and pushed into the chimney/flue before installation. The customer said they had stopped using the gas fire after suffering from headaches.
Tanvir Ahmed was asked to replace a boiler. This chimney/flue had been in a void for the past 18 years or so with no inspection hatches fitted.
Tom Ellis’s customer had fitted a new condensing chimney/ flue to his old standard-efficiency boiler, terminating in front of the door. The installation was made safe.
When Jason Cook arrived to carry out a gas safety check, he immediately spotted that the tenants had built a wooden structure covering the chimney/ flue terminal. The chimney/flue had been extended outside using black plastic downpipe and PVC tape. The appliance was made safe, and a new extended chimney/flue has been fitted.
H2 Property Services’ engineer says he thought he’d seen everything until he saw this installation.
Oli Jones found an asbestos chimney/flue connected to a restaurant’s commercial openflued water heater, which failed the spillage test. The appliance had no ventilation. The customer refused to have the appliance made safe so Oli called the ESP, which attended and made safe.
Dene Rozier was called out to a water leak on a fire and back boiler unit and found that the combustion box was extremely corroded. It was made safe and has now been replaced.

With regard to Martin Garside’s letter “Time to update the EPC”, I undertook additional training as a domestic energy assessor (DEA) and I’m qualified to carry out Energy Performance Certificate work as well as Gas Safe work.
I was puzzled that his DEA stated that his solar panels counted as mains electric water heating as I would have thought solar panels would have a more positive effect on his EPC rating.
As with gas work, to be a DEA one has to be registered with a

regulating body. But unlike gas work, there is more than one of these. I’ve spoken to the technical department of my regulating body for DEAs about this matter. They stated that without more in-depth information they couldn’t offer an opinion, so they advised that Martin should contact his DEA’s regulating body should he wish to query the assessment. He’ll be able to find out which regulating body it is at the bottom of his EPC.
James JohnstonWhile I’m fully in favour of smart devices that save gas and money, optimising comfort and energy for the end user, what about the installer?
So many times I’ve fitted an expensive device, only for it not to work – most of the time caused by the internet service providers (ISPs) seeing the devices as a virus and blocking its passage.
We are gas and heating installers and should not have to start getting out customers’ laptops to start rummaging around the admin of their ISP to change channels, open gateways, etc. This should be down to the smart device manufacturers.
If they’re producing a product, it should be their responsibility to ensure that every ISP is aware of its existence and make sure it’s
allowed to operate first go. We do not get paid for doing their job and can sometimes spend all day trying to get these to work.
I’ve personally had two experiences whereby the devices simply would not work and, after three months of trying by myself and the manufacturer, they were removed and ACL Wisers fitted in their stead. This cost me days of unpaid time and customers untold grief.
I’d like to see a better effort from all smart device manufacturers to ensure a smooth transition with their devices and the ISPs, giving us a better chance of getting them to work first time, giving end users immediate control and ultimately allowing us to get paid for the work.
Stevie SmithThis Industry Standard Update provides an overview of the key areas of change arising from the revision of IGEM/GM/6 Ed 3, Non-domestic meter installations, Standard designs.
The Institute of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM) has published a revision of IGEM/GM/6 Edition 2 Non-domestic meter installations, Standard designs(1) (communication 1750). The new standard, IGEM/GM/6 Edition 3(2) (communication 1864), replaces the previous edition of this standard which is now withdrawn.
To allow registered businesses time to carry out internal update training to reflect the technical requirements of the amended standard, Gas Safe Register will inspect to the new requirements of this standard from 1 January 2023.
However, this should not restrict businesses from applying the specification sooner.
The following is a brief overview of the amendments made to IGEM/G/6 Edition 3.
In section 3: Legal and Allied Considerations, the subsection 3.15.5 now details the requirements of new meter design and their compliance with the Measuring Instruments (Gas Meters) Regulations.
Section 7.2 states the requirement for meters to be fire-resistant when located within premises with no readily accessible service valve.
The comments on the sealing of regulators have been removed from section 9.2.6. However, this is stated in note 3 of 6.1.1 and throughout the standard.
Table 6 now includes standards required for thermal mass and ultrasonic meters.
The guidance for pipe supports, section 11.2, has been significantly increased, with greater explanation of the requirements.
Section 14.5.13, Location, now includes a comment that doors or gates should not open on to a public thoroughfare and cause a hazard.
Note 1 of 15.1.6 comments on the requirements for meter exchanges and the existing ECV, when a not normally acceptable valve may be accepted when it meets certain specifications.
Installing requirements in section 15.2 have been amended to include guidance on pressure losses through the meter design and the alignment of flange bolt holes (Figure 8).
An improved example of a Composite Notice is given in Figure 12 to assist engineers.
Additional labels have been included in section 18.3.2.2 and 20.13; where it is found that a Gas Transporter (GT) has not fitted an ECV label, a substitute label as shown in Figure 17 must be completed and fitted. If metering equipment is to be removed from site with no intent of replacing, then the label shown in Figure 32 shall be installed.
As previously stated, this Industry Standard Update is only a brief overview of the information contained in the amended standard. Registered businesses should be aware that they have a responsibility to ensure that they are fully apprised of all the requirements of the whole published standard and their practical application.

This Industry Standard Update provides an overview of the recently published Industry Standard IGEM/UP/19 Ed 2, Design and application of interlock devices and associated systems used with gas appliance installations in commercial catering establishments.
An updated version of IGEM/ UP/19(1) (communication 1865) has been published. This revised publication supersedes IGEM/ UP/19(2) (communication 1777), which has been withdrawn.
The revision to this standard comes into effect immediately.
To allow registered businesses time to carry out internal update training to reflect the technical changes in the updated standard, Gas Safe Register will inspect to the requirements of this standard from 1 January 2023. However, this should not restrict businesses from applying the specification sooner.
IGEM/UP/19 details the requirements for air flow and interlock devices and their associated systems being used with gas appliances in new commercial catering installations, and for replacement or extension to existing installations. It does not apply to mobile catering or event catering – these are detailed in Liquid Gas CoP 24 Part 3(3)
Significant and minor amendments have been made throughout the standard, and the main details are below.
To assist the engineer in the correct selection of which standard to use in their situation, ‘Figure 1: Aid for selection of gas catering standard’ has been added.
Type A and Type B appliance statements have been removed from sections 4.1.2 and 4.1.3. The requirement to interlock type B appliances means that type A appliances would also be interlocked and therefore there is no reason to detail them separately. This removal is repeated throughout the standard.
The design requirements in section 4.2 have been amended to include subsection 4.2.1.2, where the details of carbon dioxide sensors can be found.
In section 4.3, Variable Speed Drives (VSD) have been amended to Demand Controlled Kitchen Ventilation (DCKV). These DCKV systems may be more energy efficient and reduce noise by modulating the ventilation rate to the demand. Additions include the requirement for DCKV systems to comply with clause 11 from BS 6173:2022(4) Installation and maintenance of gas-fired catering appliances for use in all types of catering appliances. Maximum air flow rates shall be assessed to BESA Specification for Kitchen Ventilation Systems DW/172(5), by using the thermal convection method.
There have been considerable amendments to 5.1 and 5.2: again references to Type A and Type B appliances have been removed. In 5.1.2.1 the supply flow design is now 75 to 95 per cent of the total extract volume and any DCKV system shall maintain the supply air ratio at all speeds.
There are small changes to the illustrations and flow charts. Figure 2B is now labelled 3B and has been amended slightly to give a carbon dioxide detector fitted at approximately 2 meters from the floor. Figures 4 and 5: these risk assessment flowcharts deal with NEW or EXISTING installations and have slight amendments – they replace the previous versions.
An additional note in 7.1 has been added for the actions required by the responsible person in the kitchen when a gas detection system alarm is triggered.
Appendix 3 is now titled ‘Examples of typical interlock arrangements’, and there are new illustrations which replace the previous versions in appendix 4. Appendix 4, 5 and 6 have been removed.
As previously stated, this Industry Standard Update only gives a brief overview of the information contained in the amended standard. Registered businesses should be aware that they have a responsibility to ensure that they are fully apprised of all the requirements of the whole published standard and their practical application.

How do you get the best out of your flue gas analyser?
TPI sales and marketing director Peter Philpott has some top tips.
• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and guidance. This way you’ll reduce the potential need to return your analyser for investigation, should something go wrong outside the required annual calibration/ recertification schedule.
• Turn your FGA on in a clean ambient air environment for purging and zeroing. This is essential to create a base level for getting repeatable accurate readings each time.
• Keep an eye on your filters, swap out and replace regularly to avoid the potential for slow or inaccurate readings if condensate should enter the FGA.
• Take advantage of any early warning systems your FGA may be capable of, such as alerts showing a potential blockage, as well as stopping the pump, reducing further issues until the blockage is resolved.
• Allow all the gas present to be exhausted before turning the FGA off: this way you’ll avoid the potential risk of saturating the sensors with harmful gases, resulting in initialisation errors when next turned on. Don’t force it to turn off.
• Remember to place the boiler test cap back on the appliance and again take advantage of any prompts that alert you.
• Take advantage of the manufacturer’s technical helpline, as most issues can be resolved without the need for the FGA to be returned. If it does need to go back, then the technical teams now know more about the issue and its potential resolution.
• Leave your FGA in your van overnight, especially in the winter months. Not only is it an expensive tool that you rely on, but their sensors and components don’t like freezing temperatures – even more so when moving from really cold temperatures to warm environments, which can cause internal condensation.
• Penetrate too far when placing the sampling probe into the flue, as this has the potential to draw up excessive condensate and swamp your filtration system. Use the depth stopper provided.
•Just chuck your FGA in the back of your van: keep it nice and toasty in its protective carry case, and again remember to take it out of the van at night, for its own safety.
Always return your FGA to the manufacturer or one of its approved service centres. This a requirement of BS 79671 and ensures your FGA is checked and equipped with the required parts to keep it performing until its next annual calibration/recertification.
Don’t try this at home, as you probably won’t have the specific software needed or the training required, not to mention the lab conditions and the different national standards, traceable gas mixtures or expensive calibrators that also require annual recertification themselves, or access to quality approved parts or sensors. Leave it to the experts.
After following industry regulations and manufacturer’s instructions for installations, service, maintenance and repairs, the FGA is the only way to confirm the appliance combustion is within industry specification.
You are using the FGA to advise customers that it is safe to live or work in that property (or not). FGAs are manufactured to EN 503792 standards and manufacturers are here to support you to ensure they work as they should. www.tpieurope.com
Buying new or upgrading Shop around as you may get a better deal from your current or a different manufacturer offering technological enhancements, such as smart connectivity direct to your mobile phone or tablet. After all, you probably don’t still have a Nokia 3310 mobile phone or get directions from a crumpled-up road atlas any more. Technology moves on so why shouldn’t this be the case for your FGA?
Make sure you register your FGA with the manufacturer to ensure continuity with annual service/recertification and warranty, as well as help with recovering stolen analysers. n

Ensuring the ongoing function and longevity of an FGA is in the detail, says Lynsey Tamlyn, international marketing manager at Crowcon.
Making sure that you have an operational, well-maintained flue gas analyser is of the utmost importance. Without an efficient analyser, your capacity to carry out your work and deliver a reliable and safe service to customers is severely hindered.
FGAs are crucial tools because of their capacity to sample the flue gas of a working appliance and then measure the critical gases produced during the combustion process. These measurements enable you to gauge the appliance’s operational efficiency, as well as its safety levels.
By abiding by certain best practices, professionals in this sphere can remain proactive, safe and successful.
The importance of servicing Without proper servicing, this essential piece of kit becomes obsolete. Bearing in mind the essential and safety-related nature of the use of FGAs, it is imperative that it is well maintained, with a current and valid certificate of calibration.
All FGA manufacturers recommend an annual calibration and service at the very least. But if you suspect there are issues with the instrument at any other time, then always contact your FGA supplier for assistance.
During regular services and calibration, the instrument’s consumable components are checked to see that they have enough life in them to last to the next due date.
Ensuring the ongoing function and longevity of an FGA is in the detail.
Bearing in mind the climate in which you are working, FGAs are likely to get cold and damp if they are left in a vehicle overnight. It’s important to not store your FGA in this manner to avoid condensation
forming and causing water damage. Removing the analyser from your vehicle overnight also reduces the risk of theft.
As well as remaining vigilant in terms of storage, another way to ensure a healthy FGA is to regularly check the filters. Clearing out the instrument’s water trap regularly is a must as this is the
primary cause of damage and downtime in flue gas analysers. Damage can occur because water is a by-product of combustion and can get sucked into the FGA each time a test is undertaken.
FGAs come with inbuilt water traps and filters to protect from this damage, so check and
empty them regularly, alongside making sure that the filters are in optimum condition and replaced when required.
Moisture build-ups lead to low readings because the sensors have a film of condensation over them which, in turn, stops the flue gas reacting with the chemicals in the sensors. Moisture can also cause the pump to not perform correctly due to water contamination. Placing the FGA near a radiator or in a warm room will raise the instrument to room temperature and often resolves any issues.
When the time comes for your FGA’s annual calibration, the prospect of sending away a vital piece of kit can be unappealing. But don’t put it off: failing to service your FGA could result in the loss of your professional reputation, your job – or worse.
Ignoring the need for calibration means overlooking an FGA sensor degradation. The sensors inside FGAs react with the very gases they are there to detect, which cause problematic wear and tear. Over time this leads to degradation and causes issues such as inaccuracies in its readings.
Alongside this erosion of function, as is the case with all equipment, parts can fail. A poorly performing, uncertified and uncalibrated FGA could fail to detect an issue, leading to the potential for you failing to exercise the expected duty of care to your customer.
If your analyser is showing any signs of failure, even before your next calibration due date, always book it in promptly. Service and calibration will ensure that it responds accurately to gas, and that all its components are replaced as and when they need to be. ■

Jonathan Kane of KANE
E veryone will remember 2022 as the year the war in Ukraine increased energy costs and caused global supply issues. Most will also remember this was the year of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, her death, and the proclamation of our new King. And KANE will remember 2022 as the year we won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the category of Innovation for KANE CARE – our promise to never let you down or your money back.
The Queen’s Award is the highest honour a British business can win, and was first proposed by Prince Phillip in 1965 to celebrate British industry. Today, there are Queen’s Awards for innovation, international trade, sustainable development, and opportunity through social mobility. A parallel award for voluntary service is the equivalent of receiving an MBE.
KANE is a family business that has been running for 60 years, but we’d never considered applying for a Queen’s Award until a chance conversation with our Chamber of Commerce made us think again.
Why did we apply? Unlike the Oscars and other awards, we were told that if you’re good enough, you win, but that you don’t win at the expense of others. This meant we’d be judged entirely on merit.
The Queen’s Award is the only award I know requiring two independent audits to see if your
application delivers its promise.
We were interviewed by a group of experts who asked many questions and gave nothing away – a bit like a combination of Dragon’s Den and The Apprentice.
We then showed another group how our KANE CARE after-sales support guarantees same-day analyser service and recertification or your money back, with a 10-year warranty and 20 years’ all-inclusive pricing.
Thanks to three years of five-star customer comments on Trustpilot, and a forensic investigation of our accounts, turnaround times and refunds, our claims were proved to be true and we received the Queen’s Award for Innovation.
The Queen’s Awards were announced every year on her birthday and published in the London Gazette. This year, in
small print on page 2 was KANE – one of 51 Queen’s Award winners for Innovation.
It meant we could advertise the Queen’s Award for five years, meet the Royal Family at Buckingham Palace and receive our award in person from Her Majesty’s representative, the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire.
When the Lord Lieutenant visited KANE, it was a great moment for our team. The award meant everyone knew we were delivering the right promises for the right reasons.
Earlier this year we said goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II – our longest-reigning monarch.
As KANE turns 60 and looks forward to new challenges and opportunities, we want to thank Her Majesty for introducing this unique award celebrating the best of British business. ■ www.kane.co.uk

As your customers look to gain more efficiency from their existing heating system, Resideo sales director Martin Wilson looks at some of the conversations you might be having and how you can help them.
fact, this burns through more fuel, working the boiler harder to reach the higher temperature and not heating up the home any faster.
Energy costs are high on the news agenda and continuing to worry people. And it’s understandable that you might be cautious when talking to customers about additional products, even if they will help save money in the long run.
However, Resideo’s recent survey1 of 1,000 UK homeowners found that 43 per cent say they would spend money on the latest heating controls if it meant they could save money in the long term.
One-fifth of those questioned said they would also reach out to a heating professional for recommendations and advice on where savings can be made – so you needn’t feel like you are overstepping the mark by offering
There are also simple things that can make those extra savings: for example, turning the thermostat down by 1°C could save them around 10 per cent on their bills2
advice. Whether it’s as part of a boiler service or upgrade, customers will be looking to you to give expert advice on what will deliver the greatest savings.
A simple check of the existing heating control during a boiler service or upgrade is a good place to start. Taking a few minutes to check that the thermostat is set correctly and that your customer knows how to use it effectively will really add value to your visit. It’s still a common misconception that turning the thermostat up will warm a home more quickly. In
Millions of properties have inadequate controls, with the result that the boiler is either on or off, continuing to pump out heat long after the room reaches the required temperature.
Individual energy savings are dependent on existing controls and the property itself, but where
valves (TRVs) ensures that each room maintains a comfortable temperature and can be adapted to suit usage. This switch could also save your customer £327 a year3
How can they get the very best out of their heating system?
people can, or need to, change their boiler, their controls or even the radiator valves, you can suggest a range of options for different budgets.
For instance, where a property has an older mechanical thermostat, replacing it with a newer, digital version can make a significant difference. Based on current energy prices, simply swapping an old mechanical thermostat for a digital, loadcompensating thermostat can save up to £181 per year3
Upgrading a mechanical thermostat to an OpenTherm (load-compensating) one could save £218 a year.3
Swapping manual radiator valves for thermostatic radiator
Customers who completely upgrade their heating controls can make bigger savings. For example, replacing manual radiator valves and a mechanical thermostat with electronic TRVs and a modulating, OpenTherm zoning thermostat solution could save £585 a year.3
This is partly because an advanced thermostat can navigate temperature fluctuations
by monitoring the outside temperatures. The temperature inside property adjusts automatically to ensure it runs as efficiently as possible, only turning on and up when heat is required. For example, the smart weather feature on the Honeywell Home evohome system provides improved zone comfort control and energy consumption, based on outside temperature, room temperature and a unique feature that learns the heat losses in each room. ■

“Whether it’s as part of a boiler service or upgrade, customers will be looking to you to give expert advice on what will deliver the greatest energy savings.”
Martyn Bridges, director of Technical Services at Worcester Bosch, looks ahead to 2023 against the backdrop of recent political instability and the increasing emphasis on energy efficiency.
The tides are changing as we look ahead to 2023, when we will be just two years away from the introduction of regulations that effectively ban gas boilers from being fitted in new-build properties.
While this is a positive milestone on our way to achieving the necessary net zero-carbon emission targets by 2050, it does require a seismic shift for a domestic heating industry that has been dominated by the gas boiler for decades.
Whenever new Building Regulations are introduced, the key to their long-term success is having a consistent, unified front across the industry. However, the current landscape surrounding these latest changes seems to be ever changing, with new targets, policies and government figures and an ongoing inconsistency that makes the road ahead seem uncertain.
As we enter 2023, we are likely to see more and more mainstream emphasis on the need for energy saving. Even with the freeze on
gas and electricity prices, our fuel bills are likely to be double those of 2021, and we are already seeing energy saving suggestions in the mainstream media that may help to lessen the immediate blow for homeowners.
The energy crisis has certainly brought about some of the highest levels of consumer concern in recent memory, and is one of the key factors contributing towards the overall cost-of-living crisis.
From a legislative perspective, we are expecting to see a consultation released soon on hydrogen-ready boilers. This is something we have been waiting on for more than a year and which has apparently gone through various rewrites to incorporate more of the overall heating system, not just hydrogen-ready boilers.
We will also see the Building Regulations changes that were introduced in 2022 start to bed in for new-build properties. Houses built according to these regulations will have a 31 per cent reduction in CO2 levels compared with a house built to the 2018 regulations,
which is a drastic reduction.
It is still possible to install a gas-fired boiler in these properties, but to do so the system must be augmented with increased insulation or energy efficiency measures such as solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and wastewater heat recovery. Solar PV really is an incredible technology and, at a time when energy efficiency is so important, it is arguably unforgivable that brand new properties don’t get installed with an array of panels on the roof as standard to capture this free source of energy.
The UK government is in some turmoil and we have now had three different prime ministers in 2022. Consequently, government ministerial positions are also changing at the same rate, which doesn’t bode well for the continuity and stability of energy policy.
We have had numerous energy ministers over the past 20 years, and no one seems to remain in the position long enough to create
policies that the industry can get behind or support. This has made the move towards energy efficiency and sustainability far more difficult because the industry has had to deal with often-moving goalposts.
Over the course of the coming years, we are likely to see an inevitable increase in the use of heat pumps. This should also be encouraged, although I think it unlikely that we will hit the 600,000 annual installation figure that was proposed 18 months or so ago.
However, we will certainly see an organic rise in heat pump installations, and we will probably see a significant rise when the Building Regulations change again in 2025 to make it nearly impossible to fit anything other than a heat pump in an individual property.
We are also likely to see a welcome increase in heat interface units and district heating systems in new-build domestic properties over the coming years, especially after the regulations change in 2025. ■

Honeywell Home has launched the R200 CO, smoke, heat and combo alarm range, replacing the XSeries.
The R200 provides better notification through interconnected alarms that can trigger CO, smoke and heat alarms all at once. The radio module is incorporated so there’s no need to buy a separate module.
All products come with a 10-year service life and 10-year warranty as standard.

Panasonic is expanding its Aquarea range of air source heat pumps with the addition of the K and L Generations.
Available from spring 2023, the Aquarea K and L are focused on improving energy performance and offering a series with natural refrigerant. The K generation uses R32 refrigeration, making it suitable for new homes. Meanwhile, the L generation uses the natural refrigerant R290, which has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 3.
The redesigned construction of the outdoor units provides a high level of safety, as the unit is hermetically sealed for easy and flexible installation. The K generation retains a refrigerant link between the outdoor unit and the indoor unit, while the L generation
features a hydraulic link.
A remote control is supplied as standard, which features intuitive navigation. There is an optional second remote control for two-zone systems.
Both generations are quieter than previous models, and have a higher level of performance for greater savings, with a SCOP of up to 5.12. The outdoor units have been redesigned with a premium anthracite chassis.
The systems come with smart control and energy consumption monitoring. Aquarea Service Cloud enables real-time remote supervision of a fleet of installations for increased customer satisfaction, providing statistics, history, and system information.

Grant UK has added a Uflex and Uflex Mini overlay system to its underfloor heating range. The overlay system can be laid on most types of new or existing floor, making it an alternative to screeded systems.
The overlay system consists of lightweight, high-density polystyrene boards in 16mm and 20mm thicknesses. Each board is available either nonfoiled – for use with tiles with an adhesive – and foiled, for surfaces such as wood laminate.
The foiled boards have a bonded layer of reflective 75micron aluminium foil on the upper surface, which enhances the rapid transmission of heat across the floor and offers an alternative to using separate heat emission plates.
The Uflex Mini overlay system uses 16mm boards that are suitable for 10mm pipe at 100mm centres; and 20mm thick boards suitable for 16mm pipe at either 150mm and 200mm centres. All boards are supplied in packs of ten.
The overlay system speeds up installation time because there is no need to wait several weeks for a wet screed to dry. There is minimal disruption to existing floors: in most instances, the system can be fitted directly on top of the floor surface. The low profile means there is minimal increase to the height of existing flooring.
Each board can be easily cut to suit the dimensions of a room and the layout of the pipework, and also incorporates pre-formed grooves for the pipework. www.grantuk.com/products/underfloor-heating
Danfoss has a new range of energy-saving electronic room controls (ERCs), co-created with installers. From its industrystandard backplate to the multiple cable access design and intuitive display, in a full white exterior, the new ERC collection is designed for easy use, from selection and installation to programming.
Danfoss has also extended the warranty on the new range from two to five years and all models are compliant with Boiler Plus.
Models include the TS710 and FP720 time switch and programmer, the TP5001 range of programmable room thermostats, the RET2001 digital room thermostat range, and the RET1001M dial room thermostat.
The backplate allows for side, top, bottom and rear access. There’s a +1 hour booster button and indicator lights under each channel. Also, the old CH (channel) button, sometimes wrongly identified by users as central heating, has been changed to
read PR to avoid confusion. In addition, the previous 365-day service interval has been updated in line with regulations to a minimum of 400 days.
Gareth Ash, marketing communications manager, says: “Research by the University of Salford shows that replacing a standard room thermostat with one that [offers] load or weather compensation can deliver 10 per cent savings whenever the heating is on. So, with models that offer OpenTherm and on/off load compensation, the new Danfoss ERCs are the obvious choice for efficiency.”
