Principal’s Letter The 2020-2021 school year was unforgettable! We were challenged to provide an excellent Catholic education during a time of change and unpredictability, while maintaining our school spirit, traditions and academic offerings. Despite the challenges, our schools adapted and moved forward in the hope of our faith.

Early this year, the Regis St. Mary Foundation kicked off the Building Our Future Capital Campaign to raise funds for building projects, tuition assistance and to increase the endowment. The community's response was tremendous and the campaign has nearly reached it’s goal of $5 million dollars. These funds provided the opportunity to update our St. Mary Campus this summer with a fresh coat of exterior paint, upgraded restrooms, new learning spaces, and flooring and lighting enhancements in classrooms. We also installed a new boiler and added air conditioning to the Regis Campus. In addition, a small group of alumni and donors raised funds to complete the renovation of the Christ the King Chapel. And the grounds of Regis High School have never looked better with the planting of new trees around the academic building.

As we move forward as a Catholic school community, let’s remember our schools are an important extension of our Church’s ministry. Our sole purpose is to evangelize our students and to fulfill our mission of developing disciples of Christ who learn, lead and serve.

It is a privilege to serve your family and to provide the best Catholic education possible to your children.

Where the Holy Spirit Leads For the past 14 years, I have done my best to discern how God wanted me to serve his Church. The Holy Spirit has repeatedly directed me to the right situation that has enabled me to grow in my faith and meet the needs of the people of God. My brief time at Mount Angel seminary was amazing. It renewed me spiritually, emotionally, intellectually and physically. After a challenging decade marked by tragedy in my family life, I felt completely transformed and ready to proclaim the Gospel in any way that I was called. While I had hoped that Christ wanted me to be a priest, it became clear to me that God desired I attend the seminary for a year to prepare me to more effectively evangelize the young men and women at Regis St. Mary Catholic School.

Having spent 18 months completing the application process for the Archdiocese of Portland, I was surprised by how hard it was to detach from my family and the local community.

I was so excited about getting to Mount Angel seminary; I assumed that moving on from my past life would be a breeze. When I talked with my spiritual director and human formator, they explained these feelings were pretty typical.

As the first semester progressed, I found myself less and less concerned about my family being able to proceed in their lives without my regular physical presence. I also had specific moments where I truly wanted to become a priest in order to remember my wife and daughter on the altar.

However, during this discernment, I was struck by how often my mind continually drifted back to my time teaching at Regis. In class and prayer, I frequently found myself thinking how much better I could have shared the faith with the students if I had taught the material differently or in the manner that I was learning at the seminary. Instead of being completely focused on pursuing the priesthood, I wondered if my true calling was teaching high school. Over Christmas break, I had an opportunity to briefly visit with the students

and staff back at the school. My heart overflowed with joy at being with them all again, even if only for a very brief moment. I returned to the seminary and took these thoughts and feelings to prayer.

When the opportunity to return and teach at Regis was presented to me, I admit I felt very conflicted. On the one hand, I knew that the Church has a desperate need for priests, and on the other hand, I knew that what would bring me the greatest joy was teaching theology. One of the great things about being at the seminary was the availability of people to assist me in my discernment.

As I shared with them my hopes, dreams, talents and abilities, it became clear that the most effective way I could serve the Lord would be to return to teaching high school theology at Regis.

While deciding whether or not to return to the school, I was struck by the words of Jesus to the demonic in Gennesaret (Mark 5:18-20). After being cured, the man asked to go with Christ and be one of his disciples. Jesus refused his request and instead told him to go home and proclaim the mercy he has been shown to his family and friends. So like the man in the gospel, I am delighted to return to my alma mater and use my talents to plant the seeds of faith in the next generation of Rams. I am excited to take what I learned during my year at Mount Angel Seminary and build a Eucharistic-centered theology program focused on liturgy, prayer, scripture, service and holiness. I look forward to again working with the entire community in our mission to develop disciples of Christ who love, learn, lead and serve.

I greet you with GREAT enthusiasm in introducing myself as a part of the leadership team at Regis St. Mary. I have enjoyed learning about the past and present of this community and how important it has always been to the families of the area. Of course, I am even more excited about its future and being a part of where God will be leading it!

I am very excited to join the leadership team at Regis St. Mary!

I am proud to say my administrative career has placed me near the Regis community over the last 15 years. God has created an amazing place for students to succeed academically while they consider how God desires to be seen and heard through them.

What would be important for you to know about me? I’ll start with my first vocation, as a father and husband. I have been married to my amazing and joyful wife Roberta for 29 years. We have four beautiful children–Zachary (27), Sarah (25), Cecilia (23) and Sean (21). Our family is God’s greatest gift to me.

I'm sure you’d want to know about my career in education. I’ve done just about everything in this field since I began teaching in 1994— 18 years of classroom teaching in elementary, middle, high school and special education as well as 10 years of K-8 administration and high school counseling, with lots of coaching sprinkled in. In all, 28 years as an educator—in public schools, Diocesan schools, charter schools and Jesuit schools. It has been an adventure, and one that I hope has prepared me well for this journey to Regis St. Mary.

Finally, I think you’d want to know what makes me tick. That’s hard to summarize, but I’d offer four things to start: living my mission statement (the Catholic faith), striving for excellence, enjoying the journey and building relationships. These begin to describe where I come from, what I value and what I want to bring to Regis St. Mary.

I look forward to the day we will meet! We begin together to ask for God’s grace and Our Lady’s intercession.

I am married to an amazing woman (Sheri). We have been married for 33 years. We have two daughters Alexandra (28) and Makenzie (26) and two sons Gabriel (18) and Eliason (16).

I am originally from Missoula, Montana and graduated from Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis. I attended Western Oregon my freshman year of college, then transferred to Azusa Pacific University where I finished a BA of Psychology and MA in Education with a focus on Special Education.

I have since served for seven years as a special education teacher, eight years as an athletics administrator and six years as a behavior specialist including working with patients at the state hospital in Salem.

I tried out for track my senior year in high school and did exceptionally well. I didn't know it then but it was the beginning of a testimony of our God working through a young man as a decathlete.

I won four USA championships, competed in the 1988 and 1992 Olympic games, achieved American and World Record performances and a Bronze Medal in Barcelona 1992. I became an author in 1994 (Aim High), then tried to make another Olympic team in 1996.

I retired in 1997 and began my journey in education.

The Olympic experiences were amazing but do not compare to seeing a student become confident in themselves. The new light in their eyes shines more brightly than Olympic medals. I pray I can focus on our heavenly Father's instruction and “Stand In The Gap” (Ezekiel 22:30) for our students.

Alissa graduated from George Fox University in 2019 and immediately began teaching K-12 music at Ambleside of the Willamette Valley and Archer Glen Elementary.

Shortly after, she became a fourth grade teacher at Veritas until moving to Eugene with her husband Tyler, daughter Lucy (2 months) and golden retriever Tubuskus.

Kristen began working in early childhood education in 2015 as a preschool assistant teacher in Portland, Oregon.

Kristen and her fiancé Mathew recently purchased a small family farm in Lacomb and are excited to become a part of the community.

Nikki is finishing her last year at Western Oregon University.

She recently moved to Oregon from Northern California.She is a blessed mother to Noah (6). She is excited to start her journey at Regis St. Mary and cannot wait to combine her love of teaching and her love of the Catholic faith!

Kaelyn is beginning her teaching career at Regis St. Mary this year in kindergarten. She has been involved in the Salem-Keizer School District for three years.

Kaelyn is getting married to her fiancé Caleb in October and is excited to begin their lives together with their dog Remus.

Emily began her career in education in 2009 after graduating from Oregon State University, with a degree in Elementary education and early childhood. She is married to Steve and has three children who currently attend Regis St. Mary— Ella (8), Charlotte (6) and Willie (4).

Aaron completed his first year at Buckeye School of the Arts in Redding, CA in 2020.

Aaron is married to Cia and they both recently moved to Oregon. Aaron can’t wait to continue his career in a place where he can combine his love of teaching with sharing his Catholic faith.

Lizzie received her teaching license and her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Western Oregon University. Four days after submitting her final assignment, she is married to her new husband, Miles, and together they share a dog, Newman, named after the Oregon State Newman Center where the couple first met and are currently employed.

Kayla began her teaching career in the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City, where she just finished her tenth year of teaching the third grade.

She is married to Joe and they are blessed with two children— Hadley (3) and Holden (18 months). And last but not least, a big, fluffy dog named Kingsley.

Michael graduated from Oregon State University in 2017 and has since been working with Regis St. Mary and Salem-Keizer public schools as a substitute teacher.

Michael is a major advocate of STEAM, spending his summers teaching outdoor school and teaching voice lessons during the school year.

Rory is a native Oregonian and began his teaching career in 2014. He is married to Katelyn, a Regis alumna.

Rory has taught a number of different subjects and coached multiple sports. His major passions are his Catholic faith and the field of strength and conditioning. He is very excited to join the Regis St. Mary community.

Eva is a native Oregonian with several years of experience as a guest teacher at various schools in the area.

She obtained her Master of Education in School Counseling with honors from the University of the Southwest. Eva is married to husband Matthew and has two children—Truman (7) and Tallulah (7 months).

Josh has been teaching and coaching in Salem for the last 20 years. He has coached a variety of sports from kindergarten to college level athletes. He and his wife Marie have three children— Logan (13), Teagan (13) and Mackenzie (16). His twin sons Logan and Teagan will be competing on the football team this year.

Chris is a graduate of Regis High School ('81). He taught and coached for 33 years at South Albany High School and was a mentor teacher for Greater Albany Public Schools for two years. He is engaged to his fiance Karen and has two children—Alison (30) and Isaiah (16).

JaAnna got her AA from BYU in art, BA in elementary education from WOU, and almost completed her MAT from Grand Canyon University. She will be student teaching in the mornings this semester and teaching art in the afternoon. She has six children, three of which are still in school. Her family has lived in Scio, Oregon for over 25 years.

Matt is a Regis graduate ('96) and comes to us with a wealth of knowledge, experience, skills and positivity. He worked previously in the sanitation field for over 20 years. He and his wife Nikki live in Sublimity and have four children who have all gone through Regis St. Mary. His youngest son will be an incoming junior.

Brynie attended Merrimack College in Massachusettes.

He has held coaching positions in California, New Mexico, Utah, Washington and Oregon. He joins us after four years as a head coach in Colton, OR. He is blessed to be married to his amazing, supportive and beautiful wife Robyn and has two chiwinie dogs Buddy and Bella.

F R O M T H E F O U N DAT I O N

Thank you for your steadfast support of the mission of the Regis St. Mary Foundation.

For 60 years, foundation leaders have taken to heart their responsibility of providing financial support to Regis High School, and now Regis St. Mary Catholic School.

This annual report is a way to acknowledge those who have supported our mission and school, many times over multiple generations.

Over a year ago, we set sail on a major voyage in support of our school. We launched the Regis St. Mary Building Our Future Capital Campaign with a goal to raise $5 million to meet the most important needs of the school– to increase tuition assistance, tackle deferred maintenance and other infrastructure projects, improve academic programs such as STEAM and build a larger endowment through cash and deferred gifts. Together, these projects will lead to enrollment growth and a sustainable financial future. Campaign volunteers reached out to hundreds of potential donors. While the campaign continues, more than 230 gifts and pledges totaling over $4.6 million have been received, and with these we were reminded that support for the school runs generations deep.

Stayton resident Vernon Staley was among those to receive a call from a campaign representative. The conversation triggered fond memories of his own capital campaign experience six decades ago. Staley was among a large group recruited from throughout the Vernon Staley local vicariate to raise $250,000 to build Regis High School. He said the crew was a “Who’s Who” of local Catholics, including mill owners A.J. “Mandy” Frank and Bob and T.G Freres.

At 97 years young, Staley is thought to be the oldest surviving member of that team. At the time, he was motivated to build the school because his three children (Tony, Vicki and Bill) were nearing high school age.

A machinist at Willamette Plywood in Aumsville, Staley said volunteers would clock out from their jobs and go make their calls.

“We worked in teams of two and were assigned every Catholic household in the area,” explained Staley.

“I worked with George Harteloo who was a real go-getter and a great fund raiser. George had a convincing case about why all Catholics should support this new school.

My favorite memories were related to the weekly dinner meetings run by Mandy Frank.”

“Mandy was our leader,” said Staley. “He made sure that everyone was gung-ho. He wanted everyone to participate in the funding of the school. I remember that George and I called on a man who apologized that he was unable to pledge because he had lost his job. We told Mandy about the man’s situation. He asked us to have the man come to his office. He did and was offered a job, and then he was given a pledge card so he could be among participants.”

Dennis Frank said he was not surprised to learn of his father’s actions. “It sounds just like him. The rule of the day was that you were Catholic, and you had children that were in school, you got behind the campaign,” Frank said.

Frank and his family continue to provide generous support to the school. Frank believes the investment today in both infrastructure and tuition assistance will pay large dividends for the Catholic school with enrollment and program expansion. “I see a bright future for Regis St. Mary,” Frank said.

We are fortunate to have people like Vern Staley who can still share first-hand accounts of the founding of our schools. Our work during the Building Our Future Capital Campaign confirmed that the spirit and enthusiasm of our founders shared through his story is very much alive today.

Noteworthy was the introduction of a family-based fundraising strategy called “Generational Giving.”

This was a special effort to reach out to a few, select families whose support of the school has been steady and strong for decades. In response, first, second and even third generation Freres, Bochsler and Keudell family members made generous collective gifts honoring family patriarchs and matriarchs. We look forward to expanding this effort in future campaigns.

On behalf of our legacy families, our founders, and all volunteer leaders and supporters today and tomorrow, thank you to all for your help with shining a bright light on our schools.

To enhance, promote and plan for the financial security of Regis St. Mary Catholic School.

Endowment The Foundation seeks to provide a stronger, sustainable funding source for the school by increasing the endowment size. The school receives 4% of the Foundation’s invested principal every year. For every $1,000,000 added to the permanent endowment, the Foundation will be able to distribute an additional $40,000 per year to the school.

Bequests and deferred giving education will play a major role in this area.

The Regis St. Mary Foundation was created in 1976 with the goal of promoting and furthering the development of Regis St. Mary by building student enrollment through scholarships and financial aid, stabilizing school finances through a strong annual fundraising program and creating a long-term endowment fund through direct gifts and planned giving.

Legacy Society Deferred and planned gifts have long served as the foundation for the growth and success of Regis St. Mary Catholic School. The purpose of the Legacy Society is to recognize those who have remembered Regis St. Mary Catholic School and the Foundation in their estate plans.

Tax Status

Regis St. Mary Foundation

The Regis St. Mary Foundation is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue code.

The organization is classified as not being a private foundation by the IRS. The Foundation operates as a supporting organization under IRS section 509 (a) (3) for the benefit of Regis St. Mary Catholic School.

Named Funds Named funds may be established with outright planned gifts or bequests of $25,000 or more. Donors may direct the annual distributions from the named fund they establish for a specific purpose or personal interest or may allow the Foundation to direct dollars to be used where they are needed most on an annual basis. By establishing a named fund, donors communicate their values to their families and heirs.

Matching Gifts Many companies match an employee’s contribution to the School or Foundation. Please contact your personnel or human resources officer to see if your company will make a matching gift.

Financial Aid & Scholarship Funds Gifts to the Regis St. Mary Foundation and Regis St. Mary Catholic School support a number of financial aid funds that assist current students with their tuition payments.

Consider making a gift to the Endowment Fund, Blessed Mother Mary Scholarship Fund or to one of the named scholarship funds. Please contact the Foundation if you are interested in establishing a scholarship fund in honor of a loved one.

CAMPUS MINISTRY: CLASS RETREATS

Eighth Grade Retreat The eighth grade class focusing on the theme Christ, Church and Me. The day started off with a couple bonding games, followed by a clip from the TV series "The Chosen". Mr. Dol went on to share a story from Luke about the determination of four men who brought their paralytic friend to be healed by Jesus. He was healed because of their faith—a great example of Church community. Fr. Luan celebrated Mass, and after a well earned break, students were divided into groups for some challenging activities.

The object of the exercise was to complete the tasks assigned to the group by relying on the gifts and talents of each other.

Sophomore Retreat The sophomore retreat focused on the Beatitides. After a period of group discussion, Mass was celebrated with Fr. Ralph. Students then broke into small groups for some activities. After lunch, students headed to the Rock Boxx in Salem to do some indoor rock climbing and concluded the day by sharing some facts from the inspiring life of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, known as "The Man of the Beautitudes."

Freshman Retreat The freshman retreat in September kicked off with bonding, interactive exercises and followed with a session on building relationships based on honor and respect. Students learrned about the importance of character, honesty, deendability and most of all, being an encouraging wingman for each other. The class then split into small groups to discuss key words for their four year motto at Regis. The consensus was, "We are a different BREED! As RAMS, we serve in the light of CHRIST and love as FAMILY." Soon after, the class headed to the chapel to celebrate the Eucharist with Fr. Jossey. The day concluded with ice cream and a video clip from Fr. Mike Schmitz.

Junior Retreat After many attempts over the year, we at last were able to have the Junior Encounter at the Fr. Bernard Youth Center in Mount Angel. In spite of the Junior Encounter not being an overnight retreat, all the juniors were awesome in making this experience a memorable one for the whole class. The boys and girls were split for their retreat except for daily Mass, morning prayer and meal times, and all students were engaged right from the get-go.

The retreat was highlighted by time spent in adoration, praying for each other after reconciliation, having time to read palancas/encouragement letters and sharing the opportunity to be together in person again after this long year of social distance.

The boys were also blessed to have recent graduate Jake Bentz back to address the group in one of the sessions as well as Mr. Tabor who joined via Zoom from Mt. Angel Seminary. As always, the Junior Encounter tops the chart for the high school students.

JUNIOR QUOTE–"The Junior Encounter was an incredibly special experience. It was immensely refreshing and comforting to spend quality time with all the amazing ladies and to allow ourselves to be vulnerable with one another. The bonding between us girls was a great experience and being in the presence of God and deepening our relationship with our faith felt remarkably good. A moment that sticks out most was when Mrs. Dol prayed individually with each of us as we sat in front of the Blessed Sacrament. The retreat was certainly an unforgettable experience and one I will hold close to my heart forever."

Senior Retreat The senior class had their retreat focusing on the theme The Gift of Silence and Transitioning into a Faith Community. The students made great memories and were so blessed with great weather that gave them the possibility to do some outdoor fun activities.

My years at Regis St. Mary helped me so much academically. The college classes I had to take for my fire science/paramedic degree were not always easy and the eight week Clackamas Fire Department academy was tough. I was thankful for knowing how to study, problem solve and use my time wisely. My career depended on it.

Lead I never felt that I was a leader, but the teachers and staff at Regis St. Mary helped encourage me to be a leader. Communicating, inspiring and including others and always working to improve myself and my career skills are tools that I use every day. In the fire service, decisions may have to be made quickly, as patient and firefighter safety are crucial.

Serve This is probably the easiest answer for me and probably one of the biggest reason I chose the career I did. It sounds cliché, but I really wanted a career that helped others. I see some people that are not at the best time in their life. My years at Regis St. Mary showed me how to treat others with respect and how to help people in need. I never would have thought that, during my school years, I would learn more than just math or English from textbooks, but I was provided a strong foundation and skills that would and will take me places in my career!

2020-21 Season Highlights •

Senior Byron Bishop was named to the First Team All-Conference and All-Defensive Team in basketball.

Junior Nick Woods was named to the Second Team All-Conference in basketball.

•

Senior and team MVP Sara Wiltsey was named to the Second Team All-Conference in basketball.

•

Junior Ava Silbernagel was named to the Second Team All-Conference in basketball.

•

Junior Whitley Stepp named to the First Team All-Conference and All-Defensive Team in basketball.

•

A total of 18 athletes from Regis qualified and competed at the State Track & Field State Championship. Girls took first place and boys placed fifth.

•

Boys golf placed first in District and State Golf Tournaments. It was the largest boys golf team the Rams have seen yet.

•

Senior Ashleigh Jechart and Junior Ai Kawamoto qualified and placed first and second place in the District Golf Tournament. Both players would have qualified for State had there been one, finishing in the top three of all regular season competitions.

•

Regis Cross Country sent two individuals to the State Championships, with the girls team program missing State by a few points last season.

PERFORMING ARTS

Regis Performing Arts Takes Center Stage!

Fall Play—Leaving Iowa Regis students performed Leaving Iowa in December for a virtual audience.

Theatre in a pandemic was a new hurdle this year, but the students did an excellent job navigating this new platform. Nine iPads were set up so families could enjoy the streaming performance from the comfort of their own home.

It was not the ideal situation, but the students handled it with positivity and the show was a success!

Spring Musical—Godspell In April, Regis High School students performed Godspell for a small in person audience and a virtual audience. Having a live audience again was the highlight of the show. Opening night, the livestream went down and the students immediately rallied together and entertained the audience with some improvisation as we waited for the livestream to come back up. It was incredible to see the students come together and make the best out of it.

Even with all the challenges this year, Regis students found a way to have fun and continue to entertain the Regis community.

Early Bird Drama Early Bird Drama made a comeback this year! With 20 eager St. Mary's middle school students and 6 months of rehearsals, the students put on the widely funny How to Eat Like a Child and Other Ways of Not Being a Grown-Up. The show was performed both live and live-streamed in front of a small audience of parents and family members. We are so proud of our kids and are excited to see what is in store for Early Bird Drama next year! Thank you for giving these kids the opportunity to participate in one of the only middle school theatre programs in the Willamette Valley.

Christ the King ANNUAL FUND

Without a doubt, this was our most challenging auction to plan. We were challenged with constant date extensions due to state mandates, guest capacity limits and decisions on whether to have the event indoors or outdoors.

The decision was finally made to have the auction over two days because of attendee limitations, with the silent auction being held indoors on Friday and the dinner and auction being held on Saturday outdoors.

What seemed like a huge gamble, not knowing how many people would want to come or whether or not the weather would permit, it ended up being a great success.

Our community and school family was beyond grateful to be able to enjoy a night out.

Each year, necessary funds must be raised to provide dependable, recurring, budgeted support for Regis St. Mary Catholic School and provide tuition assistance for students with demonstrated needs.

The Christ the King Fund is the most direct way for parents, alumni, parishioners and friends to contribute and help us continue our mission of forming young men and women to be disciples of Christ.
