Biruk Legesse ’16 is an exemplar of leadership, determination, focus … and gratitude.

“The Sister Thérèse Higgins Scholarship gave me the opportunity to gain new experiences and develop my leadership skills while learning new things that will help me at Regis and after I graduate,” says Biruk.

Biruk notes that his decision to attend Regis was made in part because of the financial support, but also because he found the College the right fit based on the community, class sizes, and academic programs. “I wanted a small school where I could get one-on-one attention from my professors and make close friends. Regis had that to offer, more so than any other school I considered. I The Sister Thérèse also knew they had a strong healthcare studies program and this Higgins Scholarship was important to me.” As an entering freshman in 2012, he knew gave me the opportunity to gain that Regis had an outstanding nursing program and strong science new experiences department, but he was not entirely sure that nursing would be for and develop my leadership skills while him. “I was interested in Nuclear Medicine, so I connected with learning new things… the advisor to get more information. I found out that Regis has an excellent program and I like the challenge and hands-on experience, so I decided that was the major for me.”

Biruk proudly serves as an Orientation Leader for incoming first-year students.

This opportunity required Biruk to become intimately familiar with the College and knowledgeable of its rich traditions and history. Additionally, he is a resident advisor in the dorms. “My scholarship has given me the opportunity to gain new experiences and develop leadership skills that will help me succeed after I graduate.”

50th Reunion Heartwarming, Rewarding, Record-Breaking

Class of 1964

Reunions are sentimental, fun—and known as the biggest and best alumni event of the year. But there’s always something extra special about the 50th Reunion. And this year was no exception.

“It really was a heartwarming and rewarding experience for me and for my class,” said Class President and Reunion Chairperson Patricia “Pat” O’Hearn. “And not even just that weekend, but the entire year leading up to the Reunion that we spent planning.”

Email, Facebook, phone calls, meetings— communicating regularly was the key to creating an event with the personal touches that truly united the class. A committee of 17 Class of ’64 alumnae met at Regis over a dozen times to ensure the perfect weekend.

“You could feel a sense of warmth and enthusiasm throughout the entire weekend,” Pat recalls. “Our liturgy Mass was a beautiful beginning on Friday and leading the Parade of Classes on Saturday

At the end of the weekend, I had tears in my eyes when thanking the committee.

Everyone worked so hard and it came together so nicely.”

That pride is well-deserved. Not only did they come together to plan a fantastic event, they campaigned all year for the Regis Fund and collectively raised $227,976, the largest gift from a 50th Reunion class.

Pat noted that participation was just as important as the dollars, and they were pleased to surpass their own personal-best class participation rate.

The Class of 1964 broke the record, and they are certainly in good company.

Over the last five years, the 50th classes have raised more than $750,000 to support Regis students.

The secret to such a strong class connection? Says Pat: “Not waiting five years for the next Reunion!”

Siobhan McLaughlin ’17 visited Regis five times as a high school senior before deciding where to go to college. “I grew up in New Hampshire with a dream to pursue a career in nursing, and Boston was at the top of my list of college towns.

After visiting the campus so many times and feeling the sense of community, it wasn’t long before Regis was at the top of my list, too,” says Siobhan.

Thanks to the Sister Jeanne d’Arc O’Hare Merit Scholarship, she came to Regis and enrolled in the award-winning nursing program.

Now that she’s here, Siobhan is taking full advantage of her opportunities.

In addition to several on- and off-campus jobs, she My scholarship really made the difference humbly admits she was named rookie of the year for her track and in allowing me the cross-country teams and she has taken it upon herself to accelerate opportunity to come to Regis and do all these her nursing studies so she can study abroad this spring. “I’m getting wonderful things. ahead in my science classes so I can experience a semester at the University College of Cork in Ireland. It’s really important to me.”

She knows none of it would be possible without the support of her scholarship.

“As the third child in my family to go to college, I never thought I would be able to go to a private university in the Boston area,” said Siobhan. “My scholarship really made the difference in allowing me the opportunity to come to Regis and do all these wonderful things.”

When you first visited Regis College, how did you know it was the right place for you?

Like so many alumni and students who first step on the Regis campus, I just knew. My dad jokes that it literally took me 30 seconds, and I said, “write the check!” I hadn’t even met anyone yet. What really clinched it for me was meeting Professor Frans Rijnbout and seeing the Black Box Theatre (now the Patricia Teehan Sullivan Studio Theatre). I couldn’t wait to perform in that space.

What is your favorite thing about Regis? The people.

Even as such a young alumna, you give generously to the Regis Fund every year. What’s your philosophy when it comes to giving back? Regis changed my life. It’s as simple as that. I was fortunate to receive several scholarships and I want to pay it forward to help current students.

I give to support the unrestricted Regis Fund because I trust the College to make the right choice regarding where the money is needed the most. Together, we have an impact on continuing to make Regis a better place as we also carry on the amazing traditions that continue to make alumni proud.

Your 10th Reunion with the Class of 2005 is next year!

Any big plans? Oh my goodness, does that make me feel old! I truly hope we have an INCREDIBLE turnout! The Class of 2005 is a very special class, full of talented people that I would love to see again. My hope is that we really represent at the Parade of Classes and show up the other classes on the dance floor Saturday night!
