hristian Hawley was enjoying the relaxed vibe of Melbourne’s bar and restaurant scene when he had the ‘lightbulb moment’ that was to launch a new career selling classic and contemporary furniture, lighting and accessories online. Having sold his IT company in 2000 and taken a gap year with his girlfriend (now wife) Debbie, he only knew for certain that he wanted a new career challenge that he could give his heart and soul to. Sheffield-born Christian recalls: “I needed to find myself, I always wanted to go into business and do something... it was just a question of what. Those three months living in Melbourne were incredible. I loved the lifestyle and the look surrounding it and just thought, I’m going to sell these iconic designs.” Today Christian is CEO of Nest.co.uk and that background in IT seems not so much a false start as a key factor in the development of a business model that saw Nest.co.uk becoming pioneers for the interiors industry online. Christian started by visiting trade shows in Milan, Paris, Stockholm and New York, something he still does every year. “It sounds ever so glamorous but you are just in an exhibition hall trying to establish a place where you feel the world is at from an interiors perspective.” Not everything fell into place immediately however. For four years Christian tried to sell his home furnishing dream via a conventional retail shop on Ecclesall Road. “When people came in they thought we were wonderful but there weren’t enough of them and it was probably too different at the time. But this only gave me further drive to succeed. “When we started, selling online was very much in its infancy but by embracing new technology we could take 100 brands and 20,000 products to market. There is no way that any size of store could have contained all those things. But on your computer at the click of a button, someone anywhere in the world can buy.” There is still a physical presence in Sheffield with a delightful store just off the Parkway with lots of samples. This year, Nest launched their home interior consultations. A service completely free for anyone within a 30-mile radius, where one of Nest’s 35-strong team will come along, get a feel for the home and the client’s wishes, and offer expert product advice. That team includes MD Toni-Anne Dunleavy who started as a Saturday girl

Design destination SHEFFIELD-BASED NEST.CO.UK HAS ESTABLISHED ITSELF AS THE GO-TO PLACE FOR COOL AND CONTEMPORARY FURNITURE AND INTERIORS. AND IT’S ABOUT TO GET EVEN BETTER. ten years ago and proved to have fantastic empathy with the customers and staff. The perfect addition to help grow Nest to what it is today. Expansion plans for 2019 include a radical overhaul of the website, a year in the planning and set to be launched very soon. With faster speeds, new filtering and the same breadth of variety and choice. Simplicity is the key – making the buying process as easy as possible and allowing the quality of the designs to shine. Meanwhile Christian seems to have found the perfect platform for passing on his love of beautiful design to the public. “Every year I search for the best designers around the globe, whether they work for manufacturers or themselves. It could be a well-known name or a student fresh out of university who has come up with a remarkable idea.

“The beauty of the design community is that it is always evolving. Someone somewhere, perhaps in Denmark or London, will be designing a new chair or light right now.” Whether it’s a beautifully-made Italian sofa, a design classic like the Charles & Ray Vitra Eames Lounge Chair, the Flos Arco lamp designed by the Castiglioni brothers, or the current top-selling butterfly chair by Cuero Design, you can be sure that Nest.co.uk will only sell originals from licensed manufacturers. WINNER – ‘Best of Houzz 2018’ for Best Customer Service Excellent service, excellent staff, and AMAZING kitchen! My husband and I are so chuffed. We had two walls knocked through, a new wall and door built and a new kitchen installed. We could not be happier with the whole process from start to finish. Everyone at DKD are professional, helpful and genuinely seemed to care about giving us the best results. The builders, plumbers, electricians, kitchen fitters, surveyors and everyone involved were absolutely brilliant and went the extra mile for us. I have never known anything like it! It all

seemed to happen so fast too, which was great. Thank you so much to DKD, I would highly recommend using them. Mr & Mrs Makey, S6

On a mission

BLENHEIM’S PAUL BLACKBURN IS CHANGING THE WAY THE PROPERTY MARKET WORKS – TO BENEFIT BUYERS, SELLERS AND CLIENTS ALIKE.

hen you see a distinctive, beautiful home up for sale or being built in Sheffield, North Derbyshire or Yorkshire, there’s a very good chance that it will have the Blenheim signature attached. There are two distinct companies – Blenheim Park Developments builds luxury homes across Sheffield, Yorkshire and Derbyshire while Blenheim Park Estates sells beautiful homes in the same areas. Managing director Paul Blackburn is a man with a mission to completely recalibrate the property market, in a way that benefits buyers, sellers and clients who want the finest homes designed and built. “We are different,” he says. “When it comes to attention to detail we’ll pull out all the stops to create your dream home. Customers who come across us for the first time just can’t comprehend the attention to detail and the lengths

W

12 www.sheffieldvibe.com

we will go in order to give them precisely what they want.” If there is one key element that sets the Blenheim team apart from its contemporaries it is this. They listen. When it comes to building a new home, it’s not just about following the latest trends or filling it with the latest gadgets; it’s about sitting back and listening, very carefully, to what the customer really wants. This might mean a client approaches Blenheim and says they want a new home of a particular size in a certain area or postcode... say the Hope Valley in Derbyshire for example. Or there may be an existing home that requires partial or complete renovation. Paul and his team will look at the options, search for the land and even help with the negotiations to acquire it. Getting planning permission is one of Blenheim’s specialities, so when it comes to designing a home it’s all about

catering to client’s needs while also knowing what will and won’t get that all-important sign-off from the local authority. One recent example involved a property being built in a conservation area where long-standing trees might have put the project at risk. By designing an eco-friendly, curving driveway so the trees were not just preserved but turned into a unique feature in a brand new home, planning delays were avoided. Whether it is designing a new home from scratch or redeveloping an existing property, Paul will sit down with the clients and Blenheim’s in-house architects to design a bespoke home that truly reflects the purchaser’s lifestyle. If you like cooking and want the kitchen to be the heart of the home, every single detail will be considered, from the distance between the workspace and the oven to the size of the dining area.

PROMOTION

Fancy a perfect country home with roses round the front door, a southfacing garden with traditional lawns and flower beds? Or something more modern with clean straight lines, hard surfaces and low maintenance? With Blenheim it’s all about project management, and clients can be involved as much or as little as they desire. They will project manage everything down to the last detail. If you’d rather be hands on, or perhaps you have your own favourite interior designer or architect who can work alongside the Blenheim team, you’ll still have one point of contact for every aspect of the job from the roof to the drains to the landscaping. You will never find yourself ‘on hold’ and passed from one department to the next. Paul adds: “No other company in Sheffield does what we do. When you go to a traditional building firm they will offer you ‘the product’. They have their

way of doing things, and that’s that. “But Blenheim will offer you a home that is considered, and thought about, and designed to meet the individual’s needs. This is a level of service that makes a home exceptional and special. It’s never about us, it is always about the clients.” Blenheim Park Developments started in 2004 building developments to sell. After a few years they diversified and started building beautiful bespoke homes for specific clients. As for the estate agency side of the business, that started with a single client, for whom Blenheim were building a property, voicing dissatisfaction at the service being offered by existing estate agents as he tried to sell his home. And so Blenheim Park Estates, specialising in selling beautiful homes and offering the bespoke service that distinctive properties of a certain calibre demand, came into being. All viewings

are accompanied by a designated team member who really takes the time to know the property inside and out, leaving the seller to go out and get on with their day. Then, once an acceptable offer is reached, Blenheim can handle every stage of the sale, with recommended solicitors and removal firms, to cater for every eventuality. Moving house is always a stressful business, so why not steer clear of all that aggravation and let Blenheim handle it? It’s not all millionaire mansions either. If you’re selling a smaller niche home with some unique features, from a city centre apartment to a smart townhouse to a barn conversion, Blenheim will help put you in touch with the right potential buyers. business with over 20 years’ experience fuelling its professionalism and expertise, Supafit specialises in the design, manufacturing and fitting of bespoke bedrooms and kitchens. Owned by husband and wife Martin and Jayne, Supafit is a real family business, and their daughter Jenna recently followed in Martin’s footsteps, joining the team as a designer after studying interior design at Liverpool University. With an exceptional flair for interior design, Jenna works with her father to find the perfect pieces to complete your home, no matter the size of room or budget you’re working with. Whether you’re looking to make the most of an awkwardly shaped attic, trying to maximise the functionality of a small alcove or even if you’ve an abundance of square footage at your disposal, the team at Supafit will help you find the best way to utilise the space you have in your home. Supafit have a full range of designs and styles for you to choose from, so whether you’re wanting to give your home a modern makeover or you’d prefer to stick to a more traditional look, their unlimited design and colour choices mean that whatever it is you’re looking for, they can turn your vision into a reality. The team at Supafit will oversee your whole project from start to finish, and unlike with many larger companies you’ll find that you have the same points of contact throughout the process, and you’ll come to know and trust them. When you choose to work with Supafit, either Martin or Jenna (or often even both) will pay a visit to your home to discuss your wants and needs. Shortly after their visit, you’ll receive design plans, after which you’ll pay a visit to the team to make any necessary amendments before the design is passed on to the team at Supafit’s state-of-the-art factory for assembly. Almost all of the team at the factory have been there for over 20 years, and the family connection reaches here too, as this is where you’ll find Jayne and Martin’s nephew hard at work. Everything made by the team at the Supafit factory is done so to the highest quality, making use of all the latest in modern conveniences such as their CNC router, edge bander and beam saw to construct the finest made-to-measure furniture. While Supafit do specialise in bedrooms and kitchens, they’re also able

Confetti

A wedding for all seasons SPRING, SUMMER, AUTUMN OR WINTER... WONDERING WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO TIE THE KNOT? HERE ARE OUR TOP TIPS FOR PLANNNG A WEDDING IN EACH SEASON. BY RHIANA HUGHES.

46 www.sheffieldvibe.com

ith Christmas and New Year having just passed, and Valentine’s Day on its way, if they haven’t already, our timelines and inboxes are sure to start filling up with engagement announcements from happy couples excited to tie the knot. If you’re newly engaged, planning a proposal or eagerly awaiting a ring in the near future, one thing you’ll have to consider as soon as the planning gets underway is what time of year you want to meet at the altar. There are plenty of ways to host a beautiful wedding in each of our 12 months, and we’re here to help you on your way down the aisle with our top five tips for planning a wedding in each season.

W

WINTER

SPRING

1. Choose wisely

1. Flower power

For those of you willing to brave a bit of a breeze, you’re likely to have more options available to you when it comes to choosing your venue. A lot of venues offer off-peak rates, so make sure you shop around not only to find the perfect place for you, but also to scout out the best deals if you’re trying to stick to a budget. Once you think you’ve found your dream location, make sure to pay a visit in the evening before you commit to anything. While a venue may be stunning in the daytime, you’ll want to be sure it’s equally as eye-catching after the sun has set.

With spring comes the blossoming of beautiful flowers, and there are countless ways in which florals can be seamlessly incorporated into your big day; whether it’s your dress featuring a subtle floral motif, your bouquet full of the season’s best and brightest, or a Kim and Kanye inspired flower wall (without the hefty price tag).

2. Check the heating If you’re getting married in the colder months, you’ll definitely need to check on how your venue stays warm. Most modern buildings and large hotels and homes are usually fine, but when it comes to older buildings like churches and barns, there’s often very little to no heating built in to the venue. Find this out ahead of time so that you can get to work on sourcing blankets and heaters to avoid numb fingers and toes in the pews.

2. Go natural If you’re going with the natural look with your dress and décor, why not follow suit with your hair and makeup? Opt for a messy bun or simple flowing tresses, paired with glowing, dewy skin and earthy eyeshadow.

3. April showers While hopefully the sun will be shining on your wedding day, spring can be one of the most unpredictable times of year when it comes to the weather in the UK. Make sure you’ve got a plan in place just in case the heaven’s open,

especially if you’re planning an outdoor ceremony. Stock up on wellies and umbrellas so you’re not stuck with soggy sulking guests.

4. Egg each other on If you’re able to dodge the dodgy weather and you’re planning your wedding around Easter, why not set up an Easter egg hunt? Fun for kids and the adults too, it’s a great way to break up the day. There are plenty of ways to include Easter in your big day without it seeming like an overwhelming theme. Try your hand at DIY and turn eggs into decorated place settings, or hand out bags of mini chocolate eggs as party favours.

5. Destination unknown If you’re not wanting to leave the success of your big day up to Mother Nature, then perhaps a destination wedding is the way to go for you, and there are countless countries where you’ll be almost guaranteed sun throughout the spring months.

3. Send RSVPs ASAP Give your guests plenty of notice ahead of your winter wedding, especially if you’re planning to tie the knot around the festive period as you may well find that people’s calendars start to fill up with work and family commitments. You’ll also want to give your guests a heads up if you’re planning to hold parts of your big day outdoors, so they can plan their outfits accordingly and make sure any little ones are wrapped up.

4. Don’t shy away from sparkle Whether it’s adding a touch of shimmer to your wedding gown, or you want your bridesmaids to shine, winter is the perfect time of year to add some sparkle. Shops will be full of glittery dresses ahead of the festive season, of if you’re getting married after Christmas and New Year, there are sure to be plenty of beautiful dresses on sale for a bargain price.

5. Get covered Wedding insurance is important in every season, but winter brings up some more obvious concerns when it comes to the smooth running of events. Plenty of providers will cover you if your big day is affected by bad weather, if suppliers can’t make it to the venue or even if wedding cars fail, so look around and find the right cover for you. www.sheffieldvibe.com 47

Confetti SUMMER 1. Save the date As well as summer being the most popular season for couples to walk down the aisle, it’s also the time of year that most of us jet off on our holidays. Make sure you give your nearest and dearest plenty of notice once you’ve set the date to make sure they’re there to watch you say I do.

2. Hide from the sun You’re probably thinking why would I plan a wedding in the summer just to sit in the shade? As much as you should enjoy the weather on your wedding day, if the summers to come are anything like the one we were blessed with in 2018, you’ll still need to be careful. If your ceremony is outside, have parasols and sunglasses on hand for your guests, and if you think most of your reception will be spent outdoor too, don’t skimp on the sun cream and consider setting up a gazebo or tent for anyone not wanting to catch a tan.

3. Stay hydrated While we all love a drink at a summer wedding, make sure you’re well stocked up on water for you and your guests so you’re not spending the next day nursing a nasty hangover. A great way to keep cool is to hire an ice cream van and serve some boozy ice lollies.

4. Keep your flowers cool Make sure you’re thinking ahead when it comes to choosing the flowers for your big day. If you’re getting married on a particularly hot day, a lot of flowers are likely to wilt and this will be noticeable in any pictures you take later on in the day. Make sure your flowers are stored well before you walk down the aisle, or go for realistic artificial flowers instead.

AUTUMN 1. Embrace autumnal colours Autumn is full of beautiful hues of gold, rust and smooth browns, all colours which are easy to incorporate into wedding décor. As the autumn leaves are sure to be falling, why not embrace this and use this as the theme for your wedding stationary?

2. DIY An autumn wedding is the perfect opportunity to try your hand at DIY. Shabby chic and vintage looks often crop up at this time of year, and there are plenty of ways to get crafty in favour of splashing out on expensive centrepieces.

5. Make time for touch-ups

3. Try a theme

If you secure a good makeup artist, your makeup should last all day. When it’s hot out, however, there’s bound to be a few touch ups required. If budget isn’t an issue, keep your makeup artist on site all day for frequent fixes so you’re always looking picture perfect. To save a few pennies, invest in some quality blotting paper and setting powder.

People can often think themed weddings are a little on the cheesy side, but when done well they can really make a wedding stand out in all the right ways. Why not dot pumpkins around the venue? They come in all shapes, sizes and colours, so go black and white for the bride and groom or spray paint them gold for a touch of glamour. If

48 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Halloween isn’t your thing, how about turning your wedding into your own bonfire night celebration; see if your venue will allow an open fire, hand out some sparklers and blankets and end the night with a show.

4. Say ‘I do’ at dusk There are some spectacular sunsets throughout the autumn months, and if you don’t mind the cold, it might be worth saying your vows outdoors as the sun goes down. It’ll make for some stunning photographs and will get everyone feeling romantic.

5. Check your photographer’s portfolio As with a winter wedding, or any wedding taking place in the latter hours of the day, you’ll need to be mindful of how pictures will look when taken after dark. When choosing a wedding photographer to capture your day, ensure you take a good look through their body of work to see if their work is consistent through different times of day and whether it stands up in tougher weather.

Taste the difference WEDDING FOOD HAS COME A LONG WAY. FROM STREET FOOD TO SIZZLING BARBECUES, WE LOOK AT THE CATERING TRENDS TIPPED TO TAKE 2019 BY STORM.

Confetti hen it comes to planning a wedding, it can seem like the list of things to do is never-ending. Where do you start? Do you pick the date first or find the perfect venue and work around that? Do you find the dress of your dreams at the start of the process or are you worried you’ll fall out of love with it before the big day rolls around? How many guests should you invite? When do you need to pick out your wedding rings? A lot of the decisions you make when planning your wedding will be based on what you and your partner want. There will inevitably be a few times though, where you start to consider what will matter to your guests. Should you have a live band or a DJ? What kind of party favours should you hand out? Are you inviting children or is it an adults only do? Perhaps most importantly, what will they want to eat? Wedding food has come a long way since the three-course sit down meal and the age old question of ‘chicken or beef?’ While of course many do still opt for a more formal affair, the food being served to wedding guests is what’s changed considerably in recent years. We take a look at the catering trends tipped to be popping up at weddings throughout 2019 and the foreseeable future.

W

Brunch Daytime weddings can be significantly cheaper than those taking place in the afternoon or evening, and with the increasing popularity of brunch across the UK, this seems a no brainer for anyone choosing to get married early on in the day. Serve brunch favourites such as omelettes, crepes and pastries with mimosas and Bloody Marys. And there are all sorts of popular brunch spots to style yours on, so whether you’d rather mimic the more upscale restaurants or you’re more into the laid back, help yourself style, you’re sure to find the perfect way to incorporate this weekend tradition into your big day. Just maybe don’t make it bottomless if you want anyone to remember your day…

Late Night Snacks While brunch is a treat for those who love a mid-morning meal, some are deciding to add a bit of fun to the menu for those who stick around after the sun has set. Late night snacks aren’t new to

weddings, but where people often just opted to serve simple snacks like pizza and burgers, couples are now choosing to dish out their favourite takeaway cuisine or the food that they gravitate to when they get peckish late at night. If you’re getting married close enough to home, why not give your favourite local takeaway a ring and see if they can help you out?

Food Vans Catering vans are perfect if you’re set to say ‘I do’ outdoors during the summer months. They come in all shapes and sizes serving almost every type of cuisine imaginable, ranging from upscale canapes right down to your local kebab or ice cream van. Ideal for those who want more of a casual atmosphere, food vans allow the bride and groom to actually take time to grab a bite for themselves while mingling with their friends and family. Food vans also give the guests more freedom as they can eat when they please rather than being sat down to eat when they’re told to, and nobody wants to spend £100 a head for food to go to waste.

Getting married early in the day? Serving brunch to your guests could be a winner www.sheffieldvibe.com 57

Confetti confined to the conversations within the table the bride and groom have placed them on. While buffets make a lot of sense logistically, they’re never exactly a feast for the eyes. Boring beige food is being put behind us to make way for decadent selections of meats, breads and cheeses. Think oversized charcuterie boards, food as far as the eye can see. Not only for savoury items, grazing tables can be great for desserts too. Why not consider grazing tables to frame a more formal main course?

Non-traditional Cakes Plant-based snacks are bang on-trend – and delicious

Plant-based Bites People’s eating habits are changing more and more every year, and it’s likely that among your wedding guests you’ll have vegetarians, pescatarians, vegans, plain old omnivores and possibly a couple of guests who are gluten-free. While it’s great that these days when you go out to dinner there’s something on the menu for everyone, it becomes a little more difficult when you’re trying to keep costs down and keep things running smoothly at a big event like a wedding. There are some ways to please (almost) everybody though, and serving something that’s full of protein but meatfree is one way to go about it. There are countless dishes out there that are packed full of flavour and are entirely plant-based, so instead of trying to find out the individual dietary requirements of each and every guest, serving a vegan menu could be a cheap and easy solution.

notoriously fussy eaters, kids will enjoy the freedom of being able to choose how simple or exciting their food will be, and their mums and dads won’t have to worry about stopping for food on the way home.

Grazing Tables Grazing tables, if styled well and made up of high-quality ingredients, can be show-stopping. Just as with food vans, grazing tables allow guests the opportunity to socialise rather than being

“Wedding food has come a long way since the three-course sit down meal and the age old question of ‘chicken or beef?’.”

Dinner and a Show If you’re really wanting to wow your guests (and solve the picky-eater problem), then why not find a caterer who can work on-site preparing food to order in front of your guests? Dishes such as noodles, sushi or even a BBQ menu are easy enough to prepare and will have lower costs than a typical wedding feast, with all the atmosphere and excitement of dining at a high-end restaurant. This is also a great option if you’re inviting children to the wedding. As 58 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Wedding cakes can be an expensive part of the wedding, and you can be almost certain that the whole thing won’t get eaten. Instead of wasting a large chunk of your budget on something you feel you need rather than want, why not do something different for dessert. Couples are opting for dessert stations or even desserts designed to mimic the shape of a traditional cake, such as a crepe cake or profiterole tower. If done well, alternative cakes can look even better in photographs than the original as their unique designs shine, and don’t worry – you can still pop a little bride and groom somewhere if you still want to hold on to a bit of tradition.

A profiterole tower can make a tasty alternative to a traditional cake

Match made in heaven MAKE YOUR WEDDING RINGS EXTRA SPECIAL WITH PERSONAL TOUCHES, SUCH AS USING GOLD WITH SENTIMENTAL VALUE FROM FAMILY HEIRLOOMS. ZOE LEWIS, JEWELLER AND GEMMOLOGIST AT PA JEWELLERY, LOOKS AT THE OPTIONS. our wedding rings are an important part of your big day and will remain with you throughout your marriage as a symbol of the love you share and the promises you have made to each other. Increasingly couples wish to make their wedding rings extra special by adding personal touches and we have a variety of ways in which we can help you make your rings as individual as your relationship. We are regularly asked if we can make wedding bands out of customer’s gold. The answer is yes! Supplying metal for your rings can allow you to transfer the sentimental value of family heirlooms; many customers will use pieces of jewellery, perhaps even wedding rings, left to them by family members, giving the new rings a rich, unique and personal history. This is what the customers whose rings feature in the images for this article did. Don’t worry if the gold you have is not all the same fineness, we can mix 9ct, 18ct and 22ct together. The finished piece will assay at whatever fineness the metal reaches so such a mixture may

receive a 9ct or 14ct hallmark; as an extra local detail the rings will be assayed at the Sheffield Assay Office and receive the Sheffield assay mark. We can also work with your platinum or silver. Our experienced goldsmiths will melt your jewellery into a single piece and work it into your chosen shape and profile by hand. Your handmade ring can be further personalised; whether it is a modern brushed finish, detailed hand-engraved pattern or row of sparkling diamonds, there are a wide range of options available to allow your wedding ring to match an existing engagement ring or ensure it reflects your personality and style. Many customers choose to finish their rings with a personalised message engraved

Finished rings...

inside the band. This could be the date of your wedding, your initials or lyrics from your first dance song; the choice is yours. If you prefer to wear metals with a silver colour but want to use family gold, then our expert team of goldsmiths have some clever solutions. Using a platinum, palladium or a white gold band for the main body of the ring, we can inlay a narrow strip of your gold as a stylish finishing touch. Alternatively, if you don’t want any gold on show we can use your metal as the core band with a solid white metal overlay. When the ring is being worn the gold cannot be seen but if you take the ring off you can see the extra special core beneath. Visit us and speak to our jewellers to discuss your requirements and find out how we can make your wedding rings with a personal touch. Swiss adventure HOLLIE LEIGHTON, FROM SPA TRAVEL, HITS THE RAILS IN SWITZERLAND.

The Bernina Express train Image courtesy Alessandro Lucca / 123RF.com

have just returned from an adventure in the Alps seeing some of the spectacular scenery and sights of Switzerland. I was lucky enough to be hosted by one of our preferred tour operator partners, Classic Collection Holidays, on a three-night break, spending one night in famous Zermatt and two nights in the beautiful area of St Moritz. To get to our first stop of Zermatt and its famous Matterhorn mountain we flew into Zurich airport with Swiss Airlines direct from Manchester. There is a train station at Zurich Airport so connections and travel from the airport are easy, frequent and most of the time run like clockwork! Three hours and 30 minutes from Zurich airport via train and you arrive into beautiful Zermatt. It is a car free village so transport consists of electric buses, bikes and horse-drawn carriages. It is a perfect location to walk/hike with its famous peaks and the mountain train and cable cars give amazing views of the Matterhorn and surrounding areas. The

old town is very pretty and full of flowers in front of the high street shops, designer boutiques and cafes. In Zermatt centre is the Gornergrat station where we joined the train up the mountains to the famous Gornergrat viewing area, which is at an altitude of over 3,000 metres. It is a 360-degree panoramic viewing area where you can enjoy sites of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau mountains as well as over 200 other peaks. On a clear day you may be able to see the Mont Blanc Massif in France or the German Black Forest. We were lucky with sunshine (if not very cold with ice and snow thickly layered on the grounds) and spent an hour admiring the beautiful scenery. Once back down in Zermatt we had a short walk across the road to the main station and moved onto Brig where we then boarded the famous Glacier Express train for the remaining seven hours of our journey to St Moritz. The Glacier Express train is the slowest express train in the world and travels through some of the most scenic parts of the country. You

have panoramic windows where you can enjoy the views and the steady journey up and down the mountains. You can have the option of dinner on board the train, which we did. If you are a fan of trains, spectacular views (or both!) then this is definitely for you. Arriving late evening into St Moritz we then moved onto our hotel for the remaining two nights. Set in the Albua Alps Region and at 1,800 metres, St Moritz and the surrounding villages have been the centre of Swiss Alps tourism for years attracting royal families and celebrities. The resort is full of designer boutiques and excellent restaurants. The area is renowned for its winter sports but in the summer also offers great summer activities like hiking, cycling and also windsurfing/water sports on the area’s famous lakes. We did a full day excursion from St Moritz, taking the train first of all to the Bernina Diavolezza base station where you then join the Diavolezza cable car and travel to 3,000 metres to the Diavolezza peak viewing platform. Here

you are rewarded with the magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. Then once back down to base station we moved onto another train which took us over the Swiss border to the beautiful town of Tirano in Italy. Due to time restrictions we had a whistlestop 45-minute stay in Tirano but were treated to a gorgeous authentic Italian lunch at the Al Portici restaurant – a definite recommendation from me if you ever find yourself in Tirano. Leaving Tirano we joined the sister train of the Glacier Express – the Bernina Express Train – to take us from Tirano back to St Moritz. A beautiful 2 hour 30 minute journey was full of breath-taking views past waterfalls, ravines, mountain streams and over bridges and viaducts through the Engadin Valley. I must say out of all the train journeys we did the scenery on the Bernina Express journey topped them all – it really was just so pretty, you couldn’t put your camera down in case you missed the next beautiful sight! After one last night back in St Moritz it was time to come home. A seamless service yet again on the Swiss trains and

Hollie hits the heights

an easy two-hour flight from Zurich back to Manchester completed my Swiss adventure. Having never been to Switzerland or its surrounding areas before I can see why it is so popular year round with summer walkers/hikers/scenery lovers and also through the winter for adventurers and skiers alike. It is a year round destination that has something for everyone – but if you are a lover of trains and beautiful scenery then this is definitely the place for you! I can’t wait to get my walking shoes back on and get

there in the summer myself. Top tip – the fly luggage service used throughout the country is excellent and If you are going on excursions or a long journey for a day your big suitcase can be transported from one hotel to another for you so you don’t have to worry about moving that on and off a train – it can all be done for you. If you wish to talk further about a trip then please feel free to contact me on 01937 845678 or email me at hollie@spa-travel.com and I will be more than happy to assist.

EATING OUT

Sea of love SET SAIL FOR WICKERSLEY, WRITES CHRIS WILSON, AND DISCOVER A THOROUGHLY MODERN – AND DELICIOUS – FISH AND CHIP DINER. t may have the look and feel of a brand new restaurant but Seven Seas, a restaurant above a fish and chip shop in Wickersley, has a long and proud history. They’ve been ‘frying tonight’ on the same spot since 1931 but there have been major changes since current owners, Theo and Sugar, took charge seven year ago. The upstairs dining area, spotlessly clean with wonderfully attentive waitress service and a varied menu including daily specials, opened three years ago. Only the framed black and white photographs on the wall offer a glimpse of a tradition stretching back 80-plus years… this is a thoroughly modern diner. It’s definitely hit on a winning formula too. We pitched up for a midweek lunch in early January, a time when many restaurants are feeling the post-Christmas pinch. Not here… tables were soon full and the air was filled with tantalising aromas from adjoining tables. (No sounds or smells of constant frying however, the traditional ‘chippy’ downstairs may also be doing a roaring trade but it’s a separate entity).

I

The restaurant menu is predominantly fish, of course, although alternatives include homemade gourmet pies including a glorious looking steak and ale suet pudding, which I spied being delivered to an adjoining table and immediately noted for a return visit. On this occasion though, like most diners, it would be seafood all the way. For starters, wholetail Whitby scampi in crisp breadcrumbs (£4.50) and one of the daily specials, chilli and garlic prawns and chorizo with toasted flatbread (£6.95), set high standards not just in taste but presentation. Little things like the fresh side salads, beautifully dressed, accentuate the point that this is not your average ‘chippy with a caff ’. It does, however, do full justice to the basics. My large cod and chips (£10.50) included a suitably whale-like portion of succulent white fish in the crispiest batter. With top-notch mushy peas and tartar sauce on the side, my contentment was complete. Across the table something rather more elegant was requested and flamegrilled plaice (£12.95), with chips and more of that lovely salad, was light and delicious. Those scorch marks from the

chargrill made sure it also looked truly mouth-watering. There’s a good, short wine list, which will no doubt come into its own in the evenings (Seven Seas is open until 10pm) but tea for two (£3.80 with free refills) hit the spot on this occasion. It was, of course, served in tasteful china cups and saucers. There’s a lengthy dessert menu, and we both fancied a taste of something sweet to round off a memorable lunch in style. From the specials board a mini trio of chocolate, strawberry and lemon cheesecake with cream (£4.95) was three mouthfuls of heaven, while a mint chocolate ice-cream bomb (£4.50) cooled things down nicely. 5 STAR FOOD HYGEINE RATING

PROMOTION

Food with soul ANNIE WILLIAMS IS BROUGHT TO BOOK AT ONE THE CITY’S NEW ADDITIONS ased in Sheffield’s oldest library is The Library Café & Restaurant, a hidden gem in Attercliffe which has brought life and soul into an area which has been gradually pushed out of the city’s limelight. The red-brick building close to the corner of Leeds Road opened in 1894 in answer to the demand from steelworkers and their families keen for selfimprovement, and later became the city’s original job centre when staff started listing vacancies from local employers. The Library re-opened its doors in October last year, but now as a café and bar with a strong focus on jazz and soul music. There isn’t an angle within the venue which lacks character, from the still standing librarian office, which is now used as the kitchen area to the piano that was bought as a tenth birthday present for the now 104-year-old library mistress. After years of working in the hospitality industry and travelling the world cooking up a storm on cruise ships and picking up inspiration from countries across the globe, Justin decided to throw in the life jacket and dock in Sheffield for his early retirement at 33. But the self-proclaimed party-thrower didn’t rest for long and was soon back to

B

searching for an opening that he could apply his passion for music and food into. The plates are not priced individually, however with the tapas dishes being offered at the affordable price of two for £6 or three £9, it was only right that my friend and I ordered eight dishes between us, there was simply too many brilliant options to not try. Opting for a range of meats, such as the spicy chicken wings, meatballs in tomato and red wine sauce and personal favourites, chorizo in red wine, spicy king prawns and the coconut curry chicken and rice, as well as vegetarian options patatas bravas, ciabatta with herb butter, apple and brie, garlic bread with goat’s cheese and jalapenos, there was absolutely nothing that could be faulted about the colourful options. From fluffy melted cheese and freshly baked bread, which comes in fresh every morning, to the freshest tomato-ey salsa and the kick of the hot sauce which coats the chicken wings, there is not a tastebud left untingled. It’s safe to say gin is very much the booze à la mode, and The Library has not let this slip by. With 40 gins to choose from, most of which are chosen specifically for their local link, all at an affordable price ranging between £5-7,

there is a tipple even a non-gin lover would fall in love with. Buddying up with Attercliffe’s newest brewery and taproom, Saint Mars on the Desert, The Library will soon be working to brew their own local beer; there is more to be confirmed on this partnership, but we have high expectations from the two. By 2024 Justin aspires for the Library Café to be one of three venues under his brand, all following the same formula tapas with food and music in a historical Steel City setting. EATING OUT

Onto a winner IT’S TRIED AND TESTED BUT NOT AFRAID TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT. THE TICKLED TROUT IS DESERVING OF ITS PRAISE, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. 019 couldn’t have got off to a better start for Chris Mapp and his team at Barlow’s Tickled Trout. To say they’re delighted to have been voted Restaurant of the Year and Chef of the Year at the Derbyshire Life Food and Drink Awards and Best Out of Town at the Chesterfield Food & Drink Awards is something of an understatement. And word seems to have got out. There was no post-Christmas lull on the evening of our visit, in fact, the whole place was packed. With a huge wood-burning stove at one end, the bar is an inviting place to start the evening, with a good selection of beers and ales as well as an extensive gin menu. Seated in wingback chairs we perused a menu that was mouthwatering to say the least. Moving into the restaurant – a contemporary affair with full-length windows and lots of wood and leather – we eagerly awaited our first courses. My wife rarely overlooks calamari and this version, served with Tickled Trout tartare (£7.95), didn’t disappoint. Presented in a little wire basket, the squid, tentacles and all, was deliciously tender while having the right amount of crisp.

2

My arancini (£7.95) have been a favourite at the pub since it opened – it’s easy to see why. The five crisp risotto squares were heavenly. Parmesan cheese, truffle mayonnaise, crispy, gooey… what more could you want? My wife cast similarly envious glances when by main course arrived. The day boat fish (£18.50), which on this occasion was roasted fillet of hake, was served with Rock oyster, Fowey mussels, crab, clams, sea vegetables and a mussel emulsion. Fish arrives at the Tickled Trout daily from Looe in Cornwall and the freshness was evident throughout this dish. The fish was perfectly cooked with the accompaniments providing the perfect balance of flavours. It was a real taste of the sea. Across the table, my wife tucked into perfectly pink Pan-roasted Gressingham duck breast (£19.95), which was served with Parisienne potatoes, balsamic cranberry, sautéed foraged wild mushrooms and roasted hazelnuts; a real wintery dish that too was packed with flavour. A glass of Two Ridge Trail Merlot (£6.95, 250ml) was the perfect accompaniment. Dessert threw up a surprise in the form of woodruff ice cream, which was

served with a salted caramel tartlet (£7). Woodruff, I was told, is a perennial herb-like plant, which on this occasion had been foraged from Chris’s garden. It gave the ice cream an unusual, slightly malty, hay-like taste but worked really well with the sweet caramel. Different but delicious. Meanwhile, my wife tucked into an equally good TT chocolate brownie with salted caramel ice cream (£6.50). It was a suitable finish to a stunning evening. This was our first visit to the Tickled Trout but on this evidence we will be returning soon, no doubt to try the much-lauded Sunday lunches too. The accolades afforded to Chris and his team are clearly well deserved. Tickled Trout 33 Valley Road, Barlow, Dronfield, Derbyshire, S18 7SL Tel: 0114 289 1111 www.tickledtroutbarlow.com

EATING OUT

All change in 2019 A NEW TEAM HAS GIVEN THIS LONG-STANDING TOTLEY FAVOURITE A NEW OUTLOOK, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. here’s been an inn of sorts on the site of The Cross Scythes in Totley dating back to the 17th century. Now a versatile pub/restaurant with rooms, a recent change of ownership is giving one of Sheffield’s iconic venues a youthful feel. The new team is headed up by joint owners Ben Stazi, who is taking care of front of house, and chef-patron Scott Philliskirk, who built a reputation for being one of the region’s brighter young chefs during a spell at the popular Hidden Gem café at Ringinglow. They’re planning an overhaul of the evening menu soon and on this showing it’ll be well worth waiting for, but we found plenty to blow away the post-New Year blues in a daytime menu packed with crowd-pleasing classics and daily specials including a pie of the day (fish) and pasta of the day (salmon). We cosied up to a roaring log fire (which was topped up at regular intervals) and chose a couple of very tasty starters from the Snacks & Nibbles section. My potted ham with a topping of onion, honey, fennel, parsley, piccalilli and crostini (£5) was absolutely bursting

T

with flavour. The pickle was sharp, the meat was moist, lean and tasty – a robust dish, executed to perfection. Our second starter of (very) large shell-on prawns with lemon and saffron aioli (£7) also hit the spot and left us in keen anticipation for the mains. When pork belly is on the menu I find it hard to resist and The Cross Scythes’ way with that comfort food classic, roasted with mash, some lovely crisp carrots, wholegrain mustard and cider sauce (£14), was outstanding. An impressive hunk of meat had been slow cooked to tender perfection so that it came away effortlessly on the fork. Across the table my meat-free companion was tempted by the fish and chips and an intriguing stuffed aubergine dish with a strong supporting cast including cauliflower cous cous and Cajun diced potatoes but she settled for another vegan option, the spiced veggie burger (£11). This was another winter warmer of a dish with a tasty chickpea and butternut patty, slaw, Monterey Jack cheese, chips and pickle. There’s an excellent wine list incidentally and an impressive range by

the glass including a very moreish Shiraz (£6, large glass) which saw me through two meaty courses. If you’re taking part in Dry January how about an alcoholfree cocktail? The Virgin Mary (£5) complete with pickle gave an added kick to my abstemious companion’s meal. Puddings were terrific. Frangipane tart with strawberries, raspberries and almonds (£6) was moist, slightly chewy and not too sweet while the chocolate brownie (£6) had that all-important almost-gooey centre with a super smooth accompaniment of chocolate mousse and a sprinkling of burnt white chocolate. THE DIARY

He’s one of our own HE’S BEEN DUBBED ‘THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN VOICE’ BUT WE JUST LIKE TO THINK OF HIM AS A SHEFFIELD LEGEND. RICHARD ABBEY TALKS TO PAUL CARRACK ABOUT HIS NEW ALBUM, TOUR AND MORE.

fter 50 years in the music business playing with the likes of Squeeze, The Smiths, The Pretenders, BB King, Eric Clapton and Mike and The Mechanics, you wouldn’t think that Paul Carrack would get intimidated too easily. He’s the first to admit he usually doesn’t – “I’m Sheffield born and bred so I’m not easily intimidated!” he tells me – but a chance collaboration on his latest album, These Days, did put him on edge ever so slightly. The man in question is Steve Gadd, a renowned drummer, percussionist and session musician whose long list of collaborations includes Simon and Garfunkel, Steely Dan and James Taylor amongst many, many others. Steve was

A

90 www.sheffieldvibe.com

on a European tour with Chick Corea and was only in London for three days – so Paul seized his chance. “He’s an absolute legend. He can play anything you want to throw at him but I have to say he’s the most humble, supportive musician you could hope to find. He’s just a genuinely a lovely guy.” This album, Paul’s 17th solo album, came together a little differently to the way he usually works, largely due to the availability of Steve. “I started doing this the normal way, which is me writing the songs and doing a bit of everything,” explains Paul. “But there’s another way of doing it which is to bring in great players and trying to get a bit of chemistry going – and that’s not a euphemism! – and that’s what we

attempted to do with this album. “We got Jeremy Meek, who is a Sheffield boy and has been in my band for 20 years, and Robbie McIntosh, great guitar player, he’s played on a couple of my albums. We did 12 basic tracks in three days.” Legendary saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis also added the album’s horn section and Paul also collaborated with former Squeeze bandmate Chris Difford, who wrote the lyrics for five tracks. These Days is grown-up pop music made by, and for, people who’ve had the ups and downs that life unfailingly provides. “It’s about getting to an age, and appreciating what you’ve got,” says Paul. “I hope it will resonate with people who are going through the same stuff.

THE DIARY

It’s not being frightened of it, and just trying to enjoy it.” Much of the album strikes a glass halffull, pensive mood about the long road travelled and the adventures still to come. Paul sounds as composed as he’s ever done; after five years touring with Eric Clapton, could a bit of his influence rubbed off too? “Yes, I think so,” Paul says. “It’s always hard to quantify but as a musician, subliminally, you do pick things up. Eric’s a fantastic artist with fantastic integrity and he doesn’t compromise. I’m not chasing a hit or a fancy pop production, it’s a pretty honest, organic kind of record.” Reaction has been good. Reviews have been positive and his fans have been 100 per cent behind it. It’s also had over one million streams on Spotify, something Paul has found difficult to get his head round. “I can’t believe it but it’s true, because I’ve got the numbers in front of me,” he beams. But there is one thing that has got Paul’s back up. Just a little bit. “The one fly in the ointment is that

Radio 2 don’t get it. That was a bit of a slap in the face,” Paul muses. “It’s a shame because Radio 2 is big numbers, a lot of people listen to it, and it lets people know you’re still around and you’re out on tour and all that stuff. “But they’re going for a younger thing now. It’s not been a natural shift, it’s like it’s come from above, they’ve decided it’s not diverse enough, it’s not young enough, it’s not this that or the other… they’re trying to get 35 year olds and upwards. I’m thinking, ‘are they f---ing joking?’.” Paul will be starting 2019 touring the album, stopping off at Sheffield’s City Hall on 14 March. At approaching 68 years old, his appetite for hitting the road remains, yet is a much different experience to his younger days. And why shouldn’t it be? “I’m based in the south, as you know, and the lads are in Sheffield, so they’re in a small bus and I have a car and driver,” he laughs. “Believe me, I’ve got millions of miles on the clock and in the early days, most of them were pushing bloody vans, trying to get them started.

Anything that takes the sting out of it these days I’m up for.” Touring always gives Paul the opportunity to return to his roots, to Crookes, and catch up with family (his older brother John has recently retired), friends and to revisit another love. “I love going up, for my sins, to see Sheffield Wednesday,” he remarks. “I’m a season ticket holder but don’t get many games out of it. The worst part about it is, I’ve got two sons and a grandson, they’ve all been brainwashed, so it’s bad enough if you’re living in Sheffield, but down here, can you imagine the shit they’ve had at school with all the Arsenal and Tottenham fans?” After his solo tour finishes in March he’ll be heading back out on the road with Eric Clapton for dates in Japan, Germany and then a run at the Albert Hall in London. 2019 is shaping up pretty nicely. EATING OUT

Pass at your peril WHEN THE FOOD IS THIS GOOD, THERE’S NO NEED FOR GIMMICKS, WRITES RHIANA HUGHES. his is the time of year when, if hunger strikes, you’re sure to find plenty of restaurants with flashy signs and 2-for-1 offers trying to draw you in. Once you look inside though, you’re likely to find mostly empty tables and mediocre food. What you need to look out for are the understated restaurants, the ones that don’t need to use gimmicks to fill their seats, even on a quiet Tuesday night just after Christmas. You might be forgiven for not noticing Prithi Raj if you’ve headed past the small restaurant in a hurry, but once you’ve had a taste of their hearty, authentic Indian cuisine, you’ll be sure not to make the same mistake twice. The soft hum of traditional music is anything but intrusive, and instead adds to the warm atmosphere that makes you feel connected to the culture as soon as you walk through the door. As my partner and I walked in, we weren’t surprised to see the restaurant looking fairly quiet with it being so soon after the festive period and prospective diners likely still sticking to their New Year diets. It didn’t take long for the restaurant to

T

liven up though, with its grand round table situated in the bay window welcoming a large group of friends, and the booths around us being occupied one by one. After enjoying a couple of crisp poppadums with a fresh pickle tray and finding ourselves unable to stop gazing at the plates on neighbouring tables, we were served our starters of tandoori chicken and Raj king prawns (both £5.50). Both were served still sizzling on hot plates, bright red in colour with a black char that you know will be full of flavour. My partner’s tandoori chicken came large and on the bone, soft and tender with the flavours of each individual spice from the chef ’s tandoori sauce coming through. The prawns were large and meaty, and had me wishing that I’d gone all in and ordered prawns for my main course. Once my main of chicken madras (£9.50) arrived though, I knew I’d made the right choice. Not too hot but with a decent kick after every bite, the flavours of each spice were perfectly complemented by my generous portion of pilau rice (£2.80) and plain nan

(£2.50), used to make sure no drop of sauce was left behind. My partner’s main of lamb Bengal Baher (£10.50) had his eyes wide open in delight. Melt in the mouth lamb and soft potatoes in a mildly spicy sauce with a keema nan (£3), he struggled to describe the dish as anything but perfection for a meat lover like himself. Though the restaurant continued to get busier as the night went on, the level of service provided by Prithi Raj’s staff never wavered. Each waiter made sure that you knew you could take your time with each course, wanting you to genuinely enjoy your experience with them from start to finish, and that we did. New year, new you HOW ARE YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS SHAPING UP? KEEP ON THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW WITH THESE TOP LIFESTYLE CHANGING TIPS. f you went to a New Year’s Eve party this year the odds are you will have come across more than one person planning to change their lives for the better in 2019. There is not a lot of logic behind the idea of New Year resolutions. There’s is no particular reason why the willpower we need to make that change in lifestyle will suddenly appear on 1 January and stay with us throughout the year. Still, everybody’s got to start some

I

time, and if you were one of those people draining a final glass of your favourite tipple or sucking furiously on one last cigarette as the chimes of midnight sounded, here’s to you for thinking so positively. And even if you didn’t put a red circle around 1 January in the diary, it’s not too late to strengthen the sinews and make at least one change for the better. Here are five of the most common resolutions – and some ideas about how to realise them.

Declutter your home There are few things more demoralising than waking up to a home full of clutter. If every available surface in your living space is full of ‘stuff ’ it’s time to fight back before it becomes overwhelming. As with many successful resolutions, the key is to start small. Make sure you have a clear identity for each room so you know exactly what you want to keep and where you want to put it. And if it really is a big job then it’s important to set targets that show immediate success. Sort out a cupboard or drawer or box room, identify the things you no longer need then recycle, give them to charity or put them in the bin. Do not ‘put them in the garage’... that’s just transporting the problem form one room to another. Set aside half an hour a day and you’ll be amazed at how quickly that clutter subsides and your living space grows! www.houseandgarden.co.uk/article/howto-declutter-your-life

Manage your money

Lose weight This will perhaps be the most longed-for change for many of us as we try to make up for the indulgence that saw us wolfing down all sorts of unhealthy treats and piling on the pounds over the festive season. You’ll come across many ‘miracle diet’ claims but before you splash out on the latest celebrity-driven DVD and submit yourself to a brutal regime of cabbage soup and bananas, the NHS has some excellent advice about how to plan your weight loss. Join the four million-plus people have downloaded the NHS 12-week weight loss plan, which is designed to help you lose weight safely – and keep it off. Going steady seems to be the key – long-term changes to diet will result in a steady eight loss with the practical aim of losing 0.5kg to 1kg a week (1lb to 2lb). www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-weight/start-the-nhs-weight-loss-plan/ 94 www.sheffieldvibe.com

On a certain day in January the credit card bills arrive – and a significant number of us will open the envelopes and panic at the prospect of paying those Christmas bills. If this is a familiar scenario for you, it’s time to take control of your finances and make sure you don’t get into such a tight spot financially again. Easier said than done, and it’s hard to break that ‘spend, spend, spend’ mentality if you love a bargain. But free, independent help is available and if you take the time to manage your money it can help you stay on top of the bills all year round and save £1,000s in the process. Take a methodical approach to setting up a budget, paying off loans and credit cards and setting a savings goal and you’ll be in control of your budget. The Money Advice Service is an organisation established with cross Government party support, that provides free and impartial advice on money and financial decisions to people in the United Kingdom. www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk

Learn to cook/take time to cook more Here’s a resolution that not only allows you to develop a fantastic skill, it also has a positive impact on anyone who is also looking to lose weight or manage their money better. Many of us know the basics of cooking but fall out of the habit as a busy work life kicks in. If you feel drained after a long day at work, can you really be bothered to

cook, especially when there are so many takeaway or frozen dinner options? Well, everyhing takes a little effort but the rewards when you do more cooking and eat less pre-prepared food are manifold. If you really are going back to basics start by boiling or poaching an egg, or perhaps by chopping an onion and a few peppers and whipping up an omelette.

Before you know it you’ll be cooking pasta, baking potatoes and roasting chickens. You’ll use much less salt and fat than in the takeaway versions of your home-cooked meals, the true taste of the food will shine through and you’ll have a small fortune too. www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/25skills-every-cook-should-know

Stay off social media It’s addictive, it keeps you awake at night and leaves you bleary-eyed and exhausted before the day has even begun. Yes, staring at our smartphones and tablets has got us hooked good and proper. We’ve become all-too-adept at multitasking. Whether we are talking to friends, watching a film or eating our dinner, that invasive blue screen is a constant companion. It may seem harmless but if you find yourself going to bed later and later, insisting you need just one last glance at the latest breaking news or the latest trending photos of cute cats, or stalking old school friends you haven’t spoken to in decades on Facebook, you’ve got a problem. Time to restore some order: it’s been suggested that upwards of 30 per cent of millennials are quitting social media and feeling happier as a result. Dare you follow suit? www.nhs.uk/news/mental-health/internet-addiction

Finest moments CITY HALL SET FOR MOZART CELEBRATION AS PART OF SHEFFIELD INTERNATIONAL CONCERT SEASON. tarting on 1 February, Sheffield City Hall will host a run of four Mozart concertos as part of Sheffield International Concert Season, an opportunity to sample some of the master composer’s finest moments with world class soloists and orchestras. London Mozart Players, led by Howard Shelley, kick off the run with their 70th Birthday Concert on Friday 1 February with two great works by the composer who gave the orchestra its name. Leading from the keyboard, Shelley directs Mozart’s beloved Piano Concerto, a work that even by its composer’s standards is a wonderfully lyrical and moving creation. The ebullient finale of Mozart’s Symphony No. 34 rounds off what promises to be a hugely enjoyable birthday party. On Saturday 16 February the Hallé’s Principal Clarinet Sergio Castelló López is soloist in Mozart’s serene Clarinet

S

Concerto. It was written for Anton Stadler, hugely respected despite Mozart’s nickname for him: ‘old redcurrant face’. The concerto was tailored to exploit Stadler’s virtuosity, celebrated singing tone and love of the instrument’s rich lower register. Violin superstar Jennifer Pike joins the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on Friday 8 March to perform Mozart’s richly melodic Third Concerto in a concert also featuring some of the most famous music ever written in Sibelius’ Finlandia, Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Vaughan William’s iconic The Lark Ascending. The Hallé return on Friday 22 March, led by Johannes Debus and joined by young piano virtuoso Pavel Kolesnikov, winner of the prestigious Honens Prize 2014. They close the City Hall’s Mozart celebration with one of the composer’s most memorably lyrical and sunny piano concertos.

Tickets for Sheffield International Concert Season, including discounted subscription packages for multiple concerts, are available online at sheffieldcityhall.co.uk, over the phone on 0114 2 789 789 or in person at the Sheffield City Hall Box Office.

SES expansion Rail Engineering firm, Specialist Engineering Services Ltd. (SES) has recently relocated its headquarters to Doncaster to centralise its commercial and operational sides of the business with the help of Business Doncaster. Employing over 200 people, producing a turnover of £9million and with further sites in London and Scotland, SES made the decision to move its headquarters to Balby Court, Balby Carr Bank, Doncaster earlier in the year. The decision to relocate its HQ was supported by Business Doncaster, a partner of the Sheffield City Region Growth Hub Enhancement Project, which is financed by the England European Regional Development Fund as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020. With the help of Business Doncaster, SES managed to secure funding that contributed to the firm’s relocation as well as modifying the access point to its rail operating centre to allow for heavy plant access. SES was also able to benefit from the project’s range of free masterclasses on all aspects of business management including GDPR and marketing. Once the largest and most experienced mining contractor in the UK, having supported numerous British blue chip companies and with presence in the Arctic Circle, India, Bulgaria and Poland, SES are at the frontline of engineering solutions and applies its expertise in mining to the civil and rail engineering sectors.

Choose your carer IF YOU COULD CHOOSE CARE FROM AN ANGEL WOULD YOU? hen it comes to the care of your parents people want the very best for their Mum or Dad. As our loved ones get older the challenges of complex health needs can mean that parents may be increasingly reliant on their sons and daughters for support. Families can face difficult choices and be forced into difficult conversations. Will they be able to cope? Is it better for their parents to go into a care home? What will be the impact on them if they are forced to leave their home? These were just some of the questions that faced Fred’s family. Fred’s family explained: “Dad is a proud Yorkshireman and has always been very independent but the time that we were giving to his support was increasing and we wanted to make sure that he got all that he needed.” The family considered a care home however, they wanted to

ensure that their Dad was able to stay in his own home. It was at this point that the family reached out to local care provider Visiting Angels. Visiting Angels managing director Dan Archer takes up the story: “At Visiting Angels we know that people are happier in their own home and surveys amongst doctors have shown that home is also a healthier place for people to stay.” Visiting Angels provide a regular care at home service to the family with the same caregivers visiting each week and each visit being unrushed and tailored exactly to Fred’s needs. His daughter says: “The Visiting Angels that visit my Dad have already made a real difference to our family. It was important to us that we were able to choose who visited my Dad and Visiting Angels allowed us to choose our caregiver.” www.visiting-angels.co.uk

Are your business records up to date? You might see bookkeeping as an admin task with no value added to the business, and to some extent you are right. After all, it is tracking and recording Hannah Adams money coming in and out of the business, which is then often only used for tax purposes. But when you consider that 40% of businesses don’t survive for longer than 5 years, keeping accurate records becomes an important task.

Looking to grow your business and achieve those ambitions? Consider the use of bookkeeping as the basis for financial planning. A bookkeeping service can support a business through planning and decision making, which then results in business growth for the future. Regardless of the size of your business, keeping track of your finances can be tricky at the best of times. Rather than admin, spend your time meeting customers, marketing your products and services or training staff.

VAT registered? Keeping accurate records is even more important when your business is VAT registered, and with Making Tax Digital beginning in April 2019, being on the right software is essential. At Freedom in Numbers, we’re passionate about supporting businesses with their ambitions to grow. We can handle your bookkeeping needs on a daily basis, giving you access to live accounting data, so you can make those important decisions when you need to. We’re Xero partners too, so if you’ve been considering a Xero subscription, we can help reduce the cost.

The £45million woman SALLY PRESTON WAS ‘LIVING THE DREAM’ SELLING HER HEALTHY SNACK BUSINESS IN A MEGA-MONEY DEAL – BUT IT ALMOST BECAME A NIGHTMARE. THE LOCAL GIRL DONE GOOD SHARES HER INSIDE STORY WITH CHRIS WILSON.

104 www.sheffieldvibe.com

018 was the year everything seemed to go right for Sally Preston. The Sheffield-born former Abbeydale Grange pupil sold her business for a sum she describes as “north of £45million”, got married and won a Business Woman of the Year award. But when I asked what it felt like to pull off the mega-millions deal every entrepreneur strives for, a once-in-alifetime moment that means you never need worry about money again, the answer was not what I was expecting. In fact the story of how the deal to sell Kiddylicious, a business selling healthy snacks for children that she launched from her dining room table in 2004, nearly backfired, sounds more like a living nightmare. Sally had worked for Marks & Spencer as a food scientist for 11 years before setting up first Babylicious and then Kiddylicious, which was bought for that eye-watering sum by Belgium-based Lotus Bakeries in July last year. But behind the scenes all did not go

2

BUSINESS

according to plan. “Our major shareholder had a temper tantrum in the week of selling and decided he would not sell,” Sally recalls. “After a year of strategies he decided he was not happy with the deal and on the day of signing he refused to turn up. All the lawyers and financial advisers were standing by but he held a 30 per cent controlling share. Six piles of papers had not been signed; we spent 36 hours not knowing if we had a deal or not. “When he finally did rock up, on his own, at the lawyers to sign the papers and sent me a text to say “it’s a wrap” we were emotionally exhausted. He stole the joy from all of us. “He has tried to explain why he acted in that way and it was absolutely a load of rubbish. Who knows what happens when a load of money is floating around? Nobody has spoken to him since.” For Sally the pressure was made worse because her workforce, who had invested in 10p shares in the company and now stood to make a tidy sum when the sale went through, were relying on her to see the deal over the line. “As soon as I made the decision in January 2018 to sell, I told my team what was happening. They weren’t scared

and I could call on them to drive the business forward because they were going to benefit. “I had said trust me, join me on a journey. If we go bankrupt you lose £2.50, if it works out you get £84,000… which quite a lot of them did. “But during that 36-hour period we were all exhausted, absolutely on our knees. Everyone on my team who was going to get a bit more money, to buy a car or get a new bathroom or go on holiday, was going to lose out.” Sally would be the biggest loser of all, of course, so how did she resolve the crisis? “I was under huge pressure and they were looking at me to sort it out. I was the one talking calmly to this man, every hour on the phone, trying to find out what his little issues were. I was the one who got him to be there with pen in hand.” OK, so there was a major scare, but once the crisis was averted surely then Sally could finally savour that Champagne moment? Not exactly… “That was when the really bad chest pains started. I thought Oh my god, I have worked all my life for this, I have finally got the money in the bank, and

now I am going to have a heart attack. So I went to the doctor and was told I had post traumatic stress disorder because the situation was so stressful. “They prescribed some time off but I had to carry on working and integrate my company with Lotus.” So, complete rest was out of the question, but since that scary period life has definitely taken a turn for the better. Sally and her partner had got married in Florence shortly before the deal went through and in October she took her extended family to Marrakesh for a week. Her successor at Kiddylicious starts this month and Sally will be staying on for a while as a nonexecutive director and adviser before leaving at Easter. Then there will (finally) be six months off to take stock of everything she’s achieved, with perhaps the odd holiday or cookery course thrown in. She’s also interested in picking up some advisory/non-executive roles to help businesses in the growth stage. “There is plenty of help out there for start-ups but once you get beyond that stage and start growing there are challenges to do with cash, and people, and the brand. That’s where I want to help.”

“I was under huge pressure and they were looking at me to sort it out. I was the one talking calmly to the major shareholder. I was the one who got him to be there with pen in hand.”

BUSINESS

The Kiddylicious wafer took on the iconic rusk as the go-to snack for babies. It won The Grocer’s new product of the year award and was soon selling 110,000 wafers a day.

Anyone in business would do well to heed Sally’s story because while she may be sitting pretty now her success is hardwon and did not happen overnight. In fact when she left school with two E’s in biology and chemistry and an F in physics (she walked out after 20 minutes, unable to answer a single question) noone was singling her out for future success. “Abbeydale Grange was a terrible school, when it was pulled down I don’t think anyone shed a tear,” she says. “It was, unfortunately, everything that was bad about comprehensive education.” That may be so but flunking her Alevels was a wake-up call. “I realised you had to put something into life to get something out of it.” So Sally set about applying herself on a higher diploma in food technology in London and then, for 11 years, working for M&S Food following a successful work placement. But in hindsight she concedes there were early signs that she would never be the type to play the company game. “When I got the job they told me I’d need a briefcase so I bought one made of tin in shocking pink from Covent Garden. Within three weeks I had a reputation for not conforming. It was there from the start, I was pushing boundaries and challenging the Stepford Wives approach to M&S management where we all march in line and carry our Filofaxes. “I don’t know how I stayed 11 years but that’s where I learned my trade, put down roots and had children.” She left M&S to do some consulting for a while in various food factories and in 2002 launched Babylicious, to be followed in 2005 by Kiddylicious. In 2009 the business ran out of money and was put into administration. “We were haemorrhaging cash, it was soul destroying. I didn’t give up, I just thought there had to be an easier way.” In October of that year Sally launched The Kids Food Company, taking the Babylicious and Kiddylicious brands with her. During years of uncertainty the family home was secured with the bank, the personal risk was enormous. “My home was on the line all the way 106 www.sheffieldvibe.com

through. Of course when you employ people you have to pay them or you become insolvent so I’d go many months without a salary. It worked out OK in the end, but it was a grind.” One of the products that sparked the turnaround was the Kiddylicious wafer which took on the iconic rusk as the goto snack for babies. Launched in 2009 it won The Grocer’s new product of the year award and was soon selling 110,000 wafers a day. Then in 2016 came the launch of Veggie Straws, a gut instinct call by Sally that proved to be an instant and massive success. “It just felt to me like a good idea. I have a real problem with companies that do a mass of market research; you’re asking people to think about things they’ve never thought about before so you get all the wrong answers.” Another gut instinct is that Brexit will

be good for Britain. “I voted out and the more I look at the behaviour of the EU the more I think we made the right decision; it’s like being in an abusive relationship where you want to leave and they won’t let you. “They’ve made it very difficult for us, but it’ll be all right on the night. We’re in for a tough 2019 but the European Parliament is not fit for purpose, everything is a compromise and nothing works for anybody. We should just take control.” One of the reasons she feels so strongly about a post-Brexit Britain was her experiences last February when she was one of the business people who accompanied Theresa May on the Prime Minister’s trade mission to China. “That was an absolute eye-opening experience,” she says. “Theresa May may have the most thankless task on the planet but she worked so hard and made £15.2billion worth of deals, although that was not reported because the journalists on the trip were obsessing over Brexit. Why? The scale of opportunities tells us that exporters should be looking east.” In October last year Sally was also named Women of the Year’s Business Woman of the Year and she wants to use her high profile to support women in business. “I am keen to understand why women have children and suddenly believe they can’t do it… because they can.” But will the woman who built and sold one hugely successful business be inspired to start again from scratch? Time will tell, but you can bet she won’t be doing the one thing she can afford to do... sit back and take it easy. “I’m still going to be very busy,” she says. “It’ll just be a different conversation.”

IN BRIEF

Family tensions run high ollowing the success of Love and Information in the Studio last year, award-winning director Caroline Steinbeis is back in Sheffield directing a revival of Githa Sowerby’s Rutherford and Son at the Crucible theatre. 1910, the industrial north. Rutherford is overbearing, dogmatic and disappointed. With three grown children and not one qualified to take over the family-owned glassworks, he rules his house with tyranny and disdain. But with a failing business and tensions building, the order of the household is about to shatter. “The Rutherford family is best understood as a child’s mobile out of kilter,” says Steinbeis. “Each family member is working tirelessly to be the best version of themselves.” Starring Owen Teale (Game of Thrones) as the domineering patriarch Rutherford, this gripping drama sees family tensions running high. Steinbeis continues: “Whilst there is love towards each other on some deep level, too much damage has been done and by the time

F

we meet them, things are absolutely at breaking point.” Rutherford has three children, but it is Mary (married into the family) who sets out to untangle the ties that bind, she has such a strong impact on the family and what a time to see this strong female character. Steinbeis reflects: “2018 was a huge year for women; and I find that as a society we listen in a different way and can hear things we could not six months ago [and what is brilliant is the way the play] recognises the bravery and

resilience that is needed in order to find your own way in the world.” Boasting a cast with stars of stage and screen, this gripping family drama about supremacy, legacy and taking control of your destiny runs at the Crucible from Friday 8 to Saturday 23 February. Tickets are available on 0114 249 6000 or online at sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/whatson/rutherford-and-son

Art love affair Terry Batty has rekindled a lifelong love of art after attending classes at St Luke’s Clifford House. Clifford House is the St Luke’s Hospice facility for anyone affected by an illness that has no cure. Terry first came to Clifford House in September 2017 to support his wife Kathleen who was suffering from cancer and they attended art classes together. Following Kathleen’s Terry and daughter Sheryl death, Terry decided that he wanted to continue attending classes and now brings daughter Sheryl and even ten-year old granddaughter Emily along with him. Terry has actually painted on and off since childhood but found it difficult to devote much time to his hobby until his retirement. But now, thanks to his landscape and mixed media sessions at Clifford House, he has even had a painting exhibited at Sheffield’s Millennium Galleries as part of the Great Sheffield Art Show. “I need Clifford House and I really look forward to coming to these classes,” Terry said. “It’s given me a chance to learn new things – I’ve recently started painting in watercolours which I’ve never learned before.” 108 www.sheffieldvibe.com

IN BRIEF

Ian Chester of Yorkshire Windows with Joasia Lesniak

Three Peaks sponsor Leading South Yorkshire home improvement company Yorkshire Windows is the official sponsor of the 2019 St Luke’s Hospice Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge. The celebrated 26-mile challenge takes walkers through the stunning Yorkshire scenery of the Dales National Park, starting with smallest of the peaks, Pen-y-ghent, before going on over 12 hours to tackle the peaks of Ingleborough and Whernside, climbing a final total of 1585 metres. The St Luke’s team will be taking up the challenge on Saturday 8 June, with participants paying a £30 deposit fee and then raising a minimum of £200 per person – all of which will go to patient care at Sheffield’s only hospice. And with them every step of the way will be main sponsor Yorkshire Windows, the company that specialises in uPVC doors and windows, composite doors, bi-fold doors, conservatories, orangeries, garage doors and roofline products. “This is the perfect example of how a Yorkshire company can support a top Yorkshire charity as it takes on the challenge of a great Yorkshire event,” said Yorkshire Windows managing director Ian Chester. “We are delighted to be supporting St Luke’s throughout 2019 and believe the Three Peaks event should be an enormous success. “If fact, we are even aiming to enter a Yorkshire Windows team and join the walkers as they hit the heights and hit their fundraising target.” St Luke’s senior corporate fundraising manager Joasia Lesniak added: “We are delighted that Yorkshire Windows will be sponsoring this great event. “The Three Peaks Challenge was a great success in 2018 and with the support of Yorkshire Windows we believe it will be even better in 2019!” For more information or to register email fundraisingevents@hospicesheffield.co.uk or call 0114 235 7553.

Saturday charity collection service Making a donation to Emmaus Sheffield has never been easier now that the city charity has launched a Saturday collection service. Emmaus Sheffield is the working community with quality, self-contained accommodation, training facilities and a workspace for previously homeless men and women aged 18 years and over. It aims through its social enterprise programme to provide meaningful work and enable the people it supports – known as companions – to eventually become selfsupporting once more. One of its main fundraising schemes is its extremely popular second hand and vintage store at the organisation’s headquarters in the historic Sipelia Works, a former cutlery factory at Cadman Street, close to the city’s Canal Basin. The charity runs a collection service for unwanted larger items of furniture and electrical goods. And now, in response to growing calls for a weekend service, collections can be arranged for Saturday – and deliveries can also be made too. “The success of our furniture store depends entirely on the generosity of the people of Sheffield, who keep us stocked up with everything from sofas to dressers, coffee tables to wardrobes,” said Emmaus Sheffield Deputy Manager Charley Fedorenko. Items can be taken directly to the Emmaus shop in Cadman Street during normal hours or to arrange a collection simply call 0114 272 0677 or email: enquiry@emmaus-sheffield.org.uk www.sheffieldvibe.com 109

Sheffield Parks Walk THE NEAR 15-MILE ROUND WALK IS A GREAT WAY TO DISCOVER HIDDEN SHEFFIELD GEMS, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. Heading into the Limb Valley

o you think you know Sheffield? Even if you are a born-and-bred resident of the Steel City, unless you’ve tackled the Sheffield Parks Walk, there are certain dusky corners that are almost certainly waiting to be discovered. I first stepped out on this circular route way back in 2001 when we invited readers to join us on a summer stroll of just under 15 miles to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the launch of RMC Media’s first title, Westside. Despite the fact that I’d come to Sheffield for a job in 1983 and never left, and been a keen walker for most of that time, it was a revelation. For example, I’d visited the pretty and genteel Whirlow Brook Park many times, without walking through the woods to the rear and striding through the gorgeous and peaceful Limb Valley; Brincliffe Edge was another first while Chelsea Park, on the final stretch, reminded me of a forgotten gem. Most of my fellow walkers felt the same way about different stages of a very pleasant meander which, with a couple of refreshment breaks, took the best part of a sunny summer’s day. Most of all, this varied mix of urban parkland, streams, woods and suburban streets, was a glorious reminder that the old cliché about Sheffield being one of

S

110 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Great Britain’s greenest cities was no idle boast. Taken in sections the Sheffield Parks Walk, which begins in Endcliffe Park at Hunters Bar, is all pretty easy going for the most casual Sunday stroller (though there is a steep incline through Lady Spring Wood at Beauchief). The walk is signposted extremely well, so even if you are not familiar with the route it would be hard to go astray. And if the thought of 14-and-abit miles is just too daunting, why not break it down into sections over the course of a few weekends? You’re never more than a couple of miles from a main road and a bus. The Sheffield Round Walk is managed by Sheffield City Council in association with various ‘friends of’ groups. A detailed booklet, the Sheffield Round Walk Guide, costs £4.95 and is available from the council and various outdoor shops.

Starting point at Endcliffe Park

THE ROUTE 1. Start from Endcliffe Park at Hunters Bar and follow the Porter Brook through woodland to Bingham Park at the western end. Continue along the brook and Whiteley Woods passing the Forge Dam cafe on the way. 2. Head through the Mayfield Valley along Clough Lane to the peaceful wooded area of Porter Clough where you turn south to the little village of Ringinglow on the edge of the Peak District National Park. Pass through the village, head through the Limb Valley with the Limb Brook and woodland trails. 3. Walk through Whirlow Brook Park and continue south-east through Ecclesall Woods where you’ll pass Abbeydale Miniature railway. Continue towards Beauchief Abbey, passing through Ladies Spring Wood on the way. Beauchief Park includes the remains of the 12th century Abbey, a 17th century church and a pretty mill pond. 4. The route continues east to Meadowhead and Graves Park, after which you turn north through Lees Hall golf club and Meersbrook Park. The final section takes you through Chelsea Park and Brincliffe before finishing back at Endcliffe Park.

HEROES

A home is the bedrock to everything THE LIVINGWELL MODEL MEANS PEOPLE ACCESSING SPECIALIST SERVICES ALWAYS HAVE A SAFE, SECURE HOME CLOSE TO THEIR FRIENDS, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY. o-one should have to move out of their local area to access specialist mental health or learning disability support – they need to be home; safe, supported and surrounded by their family, belongings and community. That’s why South Yorkshire Housing Association (SYHA) teamed up with Sheffield Care and Social NHS Foundation Trust (SHSC) to create LivingWell, a model that ensures people accessing these services have the safety and security of being in their own home – always. Juliann Hall, Director of Care, Health and Wellbeing at SYHA, said: “The reality was that many people with a mental health diagnosis had been displaced for many years, and were in rehabilitation units, and those places will never be a home. When you’re in your own home, you have access to your things – your books, your family, your community, and when people are sent away, that link’s broken, so they lose the very connection with the thing that makes them well. “As a housing association, we believe that your home is the absolute bedrock to everything; that you cannot be well without a good home and roof over your head.” LivingWell works with local people to give them the skills they need to live independently in their own fullyfurnished home. By working alongside a named keyworker from SYHA and the Community Enhancing Recovery Team at SHSC, the people who receive this support are involved in developing their own personalised support plan which has their best interests at heart. Mike Hunter, Executive Medical Director at SHSCT, commented: “Receiving care in a rehabilitation unit miles away from your home just isn’t the best place to recover.

HEROES

“I’ve done a lot of work with people who are homeless and people who’ve been in locked rehabilitation units, and, if I’ve learnt anything, it’s that sorting out housing is what makes the real difference in their recovery.” The LivingWell model began more than three years ago and around 50 people have benefitted from better health and wellbeing outcomes, which this model provides. The model was founded on the principle that for someone to be well physically and mentally they need to have quality housing, receive support in their local community and have access to the crucial support network that family, friends and carers offer. The individual’s care and clinical needs are wrapped around their home. SYHA

“The house the person is given is then there for as long as they need it – even if they’re re-admitted they can always come back home.”

work closely with partners in local health and social services to make sure they complement the individual’s existing care requirements. The house the person is given is then there for as long as they need it – even if they’re re-admitted they can always come back home. Juliann Hall adds: “The thing that created part of the solution on this was the relationship between ourselves and the care trust, because we were willing to be different. “As we had a long-standing relationship and trusted each other, we were willing to take a very different approach and be radical and take that risk. But the most important thing is that it’s changed the lives of the people that have moved back to Sheffield.”

Lisa Knowles*, who has benefitted from the LivingWell model, said: “For me, it’s important being back somewhere I know, somewhere I’m familiar with. When I go out of the door, I know where to go, I know where I am, and I know which way to turn… it’s somewhere that feels like home. “I originally was sent away and my family didn’t know I was there – I didn’t have chance to tell them. I felt as if I was completely on my own. “Eventually I got moved back to Sheffield to live in my own house, and in the first month I received an incredible amount of support. If I hadn’t gotten

that I would have ended up back in hospital.” Natalie Newman, LivingWell manager and area lead, at SYHA added: “The collaboration between SYHA and SHSC has been an insight into the future of mental health services where health, housing and care, work together as equally invaluable partners assisting people to improve their lives. “We’re proud of the difference this innovative and seamless partnership is having on people’s lives. We want to find like-minded collaborators so we can continue to make great things happen in other cities.” By working together SYHA and SHSC have been able to give people returning to Sheffield a safe and secure place to call home. ho will care for the legal needs of the elderly? It’s a modern dilemma that isn’t about to go away, as we live longer and more of us are prone to memory loss, dementia and physical frailty. Whether you are facing your later years alone or with the help of friends or family, there comes a time when everyone, no matter how fiercely independent, needs a little help. But with an increasing number of legal firms growing in size, deserting the suburbs for massive city centre offices, and moving away from the personal touch that used the be the cornerstone of their business, finding a friendly face to tackle your individual issues can become a real problem. This is where Rosalind Watchorn Solicitors can help, with friendly legal advice in a comfortable setting. They are based on a quiet street in Nether Edge and have a large car park, so there’s no need to tackle Sheffield city centre’s ever-changing one-way system. What started as a one-woman band in 1993 is now a thriving business with a staff of 23 including eight solicitors and three specialist paralegals specialising in wills, probate, tax planning and trusts, as well as residential and commercial property work. Founder Rosalind Watchorn started the business from her kitchen table in 1993 after training with a large commercial firm. “I found I was much more excited by, and interested in, talking to real people about their real life situations, than the number of noughts on the end of a big deal,” she says. “I had two young children at the time and a third soon followed; I thought it might be a sideline for a short while but the business just grew. “It seemed that many firms didn’t really value their private clients, they probably no longer wanted to do home visits to the elderly, but that is a service that is still necessary and there are many people who still like a more traditional and more personal approach.” Judging by the way the business has grown over the last 25 years Rosalind is not alone in this view. Her business partner Rebecca Linsell, who joined in 1997, sees a daily need for the more hands-on approach. “We often help people who either don’t have family

Friendly and approachable THE PERSONAL TOUCH IS WHAT COUNTS AT ROSALIND WATCHORN SOLICITORS. close by or are living independently and starting to struggle,” she says. “Perhaps they need to start thinking about having some care at home, or going into care, and they need support from somebody other than friends and neighbours because it is a big undertaking. “We try and get to know people and support them in making those decisions, not making decisions for them. It’s about finding out what they want, what they need and what their circumstances dictate and sometimes protecting vulnerable people against financial abuse.” As well as providing a friendly face,

Rosalind and Rebecca also have the expertise to guide clients of all ages and backgrounds through a legal landscape that has become more complicated over the last decade in areas such as wills and inheritance tax, powers of attorney and community case. Rosalind says: “A lot of people think they can write their own will, or they Google something, or they take advice from a well-meaning but misguided friend. Then they discover they missed out on all sorts of opportunities because they did not come along and get legal advice at the right time. “Our approach is to cut out the legal jargon and talk to people in a way they will understand.” Rosalind Watchorn Solicitors 10 Kenwood Park Road Sheffield, S7 1NF Tel: 0114 229 0160 www.rwatchorn.co.uk

Younger generations are increasingly reliant on the “bank of mum and dad” and the number of parents and grandparents willing to assist their family has mushroomed in the last 10 years. Helping the next generation can be very costly. A 20% deposit for a first home can easily be over £25,000; student fees are currently £9,250 a year and together with loans for living costs many young graduates are saddled with over £40,000 of debt; and the average wedding costs in the region of £25,000. But not everyone thinks about the legal implications of gifts or loans to their children or grandchildren. Before contributing to a property purchase you need to be clear about whether this is a loan to the children, and if so on what terms. If it is a gift what are the risks of your child’s partner or spouse taking advantage of this in the future and claiming a share in it themselves? Do you want to protect it, for

example, by putting it in a trust so that the capital amount is sheltered? Do you want to have the property, or a share in it, in your own name? If so what would be the inheritance tax consequences, stamp duty payable, or the capital gains tax implications when the property is sold or you transfer it to your child. Sometimes what you do will be dictated by a third party if your child is getting a mortgage. It is always better before embarking on large gifts or loans or other arrangements with family members to seek legal advice first from specialist lawyers. The tax implications are important; but we can also advise about ways your interests as well as those of your children can be best protected. Rosalind Watchorn Solicitors deal with Wills, probate and property issues and are available to discuss your future plans with you. Please call on 0114 2290160 or email mail@rwatchorn.co.uk. Home visits are available if you are unable to attend the office.

MOTORING

SEVEN-SEAT PRACTICALITY ALSO BRINGS AN ELEMENT OF FUN IN THIS MONTH’S ROUND-UP. BY JORDAN CUTFORTH.

SEAT SUV flagship If the Skoda Kodiaq is not your cup of tea then SEAT has a great alternative – the Tarraco. The Tarraco sits above the Ateca and Arona to be SEAT’s flagship model, being the firm’s only seven-seater option. Starting at £28,320, the Tarraco has got some stiff competition to fend off, but being a SEAT, it should be a solid and reliable choice for any family. Four trim choices are offered: SE, SE Technology, XCELLENCE and XCELLENCE LUX. Standard equipment includes metallic paint, Full Link, DAB, 17” alloy wheels, alarm and three-zone climate control. Other trims include larger alloys, rear-view camera, electric tailgate and navigation. Engines include a 148bhp 1.5-litre TSI, a 187bhp 2.0-litre TSI and a 2.0-litre TDI with 148 and 187bhp.

Seven up and speedy The fastest SUV to ever tackle the Nürburgring is a… Skoda? That’s right and not just any Skoda, the first ever SUV to wear the hot performance vRS badge. Powered by the firm’s most powerful diesel engine ever fitted to one of their cars – a 237bhp 2.0-litre four-pot – the Kodiaq vRS can sprint from 0-62mph in 7.0 seconds and go onto 136mph. No too shabby when you’re seven up and full of luggage! The vRS will be permanent allwheel drive with a seven-speed DSG transferring the power to the wheels. On a combined run, the vRS can

achieve 44.1mpg with 167g/km of CO2 being produced. Inside, it’s all very vRS-like yet practical enough for every situation. On sale in January. Price approximately £43,000.

In the works Spider fan The 720S just got a whole lot cooler. Welcome everyone to the spider – McLaren’s convertible edition of the 720S. Powered by a 710hp 4.0-litre twinturbo engine, the 720S is one of the fastest road cars ever to have been produced. Top speed is 212mph and 2.9 seconds 0-62mph time. It can still achieve 202mph with the roof down. Weighing in at 1,332kg, it’s only 44kg heavier than the coupe, yet it’s still 88kg lighter than the nearest competition. This is all thanks to the carbon fibre body structure and new retractable hard top, which can lower or raise in 11 seconds – the fastest in the supercar class. Deliveries to customers will commence in March of 2019. Priced will start at £237,000. 126 www.sheffieldvibe.com

From March 2019 the newly revised John Cooper Works edition of the Mini Cooper will be back. Coming in coupe and convertible styles, the JCW will come with a 2.0-litre 231hp powerplant with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox. The former acquires figures of 40.9mpg combined and 157-158g/km of CO2 for the coupe; 39.8 to 40.4 mpg and 161-162g/km for the convertible. The latter 45.6-46.3mpg and 140-142g/km for the coupe; 43.5-44.1mpg and 145148g/km for the convertible. With the six-speed manual option, the coupe can accelerate to 62mph in 6.3 seconds and 6.6 seconds for the convertible. Standard specification includes sport suspension with 17-inch John Cooper Works alloy wheels, sports braking system and John Cooper Works Aerodynamic Kit. Available to order now.
