She is aiming for a third successive year of selection for 2017. Steve Canning has represented GB in Age Group Triathlon at both World and European Championships. He has recently focussed more specifically on running, and is participating in the 2017 London marathon. Steve is raising money for Blind Veterans UK. The charity helped his great grandfather to train as a physiotherapist after he was blinded in the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Both Sally and Steve pin a lot of their success on maintaining good fitness throughout the season, and minimising time
lost through injury. They happily pass this knowledge on to their patients (as long as they don't then go and beat them too often!). As well as finding and recruiting all 32 of our distributors in the UK and Ireland, Tibor also sources our new products, is the buyer and deals with the import side of the business. “Our largest customers include prisons, hundreds of schools and universities, Mitie-Bunzl, councils, NHS hospitals, BUPA – whom we supply nationwide – 311 nursing homes, Manchester and Heathrow airports, Coca-Cola and Meadowhall – just to name a few. And I must not forget our wonderful 29,000 plus domestic customers.” From humble beginnings, TL Killi’s is the largest independent distributor of cleaning equipment and materials in the UK and the next stops are Mexico, Brazil, Turkey and India.
Clients in the UK also include sports and leisure centres, hotels, bars, restaurants, 180 places of worship and housing authorities. The Glossop Road and factory shops have on display a wealth of modern and innovative cleaning equipment to cater for every conceivable need. Very few items possess the same sartorial power that shoes do. Unlike, other accessories like cufflinks or a tie, a great pair completes an outfit, pulls the whole look together, and as such should take pride and place in every man’s wardrobe. An expert cobbler with over 50 years’ experience, Charles opened his first shop in 1972 after visiting his father at Darnall’s Coombes shoe repair factory as a youngster. A well-heeled gentleman himself, he understands that great shoes are worth investing in, so only the finest handmade footwear occupies the shelves of his Fulwood Road store. select group of specialist designers, all of which are committed to using traditional time-honoured English skills in their shoemaking. There are some 200 operations involved in the making of just one pair of Loake Goodyear-welted shoes, most of which are
carried out by highly-skilled craftsmen. Likewise, Barker, which produces over 200,000 pairs of hand-lasted sewn shoes annually, and Tricker’s shoes are carefully crafted by a team of master craftsmen to withstand years of wear. The shoes are handstitched and fitted with a special cork layer beneath the inner sole, which allows feet to breathe. A few decades ago, most of the shoes that men in this country bought were made in Northampton. But now only a few specialist shoemakers remain; the rest have gone abroad where production is cheaper. “Mass produced shoes are not made to last,” says Charles. “They are glued together, and the plastic soles are finished with only a thin layer of leather, consequently they start to fall apart within a few months of wear. “Invest in a properly made pair of shoes and look after them, they can last anything up to ten years. They get better the more you wear them; some of my customers have been wearing the same pair for decades.”

A good time for a review CAN THE NEW ‘RESIDENCE NIL RATE BAND’ AFFECT YOUR WILL? ith the advent of the residence nil rate band (RNRB) in April this year, Graysons is offering to review your existing will for free – to make sure that it is tax efficient and meets your requirements. The RNRB means that, where a property is involved, you can leave an extra £100,000 to your children (including step-children), or other direct descendants (grandchildren), inheritance tax free, on top of your existing nil rate band (NRB) of £325,000. The RNRB will increase by £25,000 a year until 2020, when it will reach £175,000; meaning you will be able to leave £500,000 to your family. A good time for a free will review? We think so. If you are married, and your spouse dies, you could inherit his/her nil rate band, meaning you will be able to leave up to £1million to your children and/or decedents tax free, as, since 2008 the unused part of the NRB passes to the surviving spouse. However, if you have made use of a nil rate band discretionary trust (NRBDT) within your will, having not changed your will and you die, the RNRB will be lost, so your children, grandchildren etc. will not benefit from it. This is because up until 2008, when the surviving spouse inherited his/her

spouse’s NRB (currently £325,000), many people set up nil rate band discretionary trusts. This meant that the amount of money up to the NRB was paid into a trust upon death, protecting it from inheritance tax. Of course, you may wish to maintain your NRBDT if you have one. For example if you want to protect your estate from a divorce settlement, or from care fees, but more than likely you will want to alter your will so that you can take advantage of the residence nil rate band when it comes into force and thus reduce inheritance tax. Thankfully there is a different type of will trust known as an ‘immediate post death interest’ (IPDI), often referred to as a ‘life interest trust’, which can offer asset protection from things such as nursing home fees and still qualify for the additional RNRB. Stephanie explained how large steps are taken in preparation for leaving nursery, ensuring a smooth transition to school. The majority of the staff are trained in First Aid. Furthermore, they promote fundamental British values such as democracy, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. The white chocolate exterior of the truffles contained popping candy and represented the fizzy tonic whilst the smooth milk chocolate centre had a strong and satisfying flavour. The lemon flavour in the chocolate egg was subtle, but delicious none-the-less.
BEST ORGANIC OPTION Montezuma’s organic milk chocolate button egg 250g, £9.99 Not only is this egg organic, it’s also gluten free. If you’ve experienced the usual grainy, no-thrills variety of gluten-free chocolate, you’ll be pleased to hear that this one has a smooth texture and a great flavour.
BEST FOR WHITE CHOCOLATE LOVERS Sainsbury’s Belgian white chocolate and pistachio egg 220g, £6 Great for those that like their chocolate with a twist, the crunchy pistachios proved a delicious contrast to the smooth texture of the egg. Our brain learns pain and as a result we feel our only option is to protect a given area. This results in further pain, reduced function and belief that we will never return to normal. Susan, a 60-year-old music teacher, presented with a painful toe that had deteriorated over the last two years. An x-ray revealed degenerative changes and the onset of arthritis in the joint. Medication had failed to improve the pain and Susan was becoming increasingly disabled and had been forced to stop gym classes. A mild deformity of the toe combined with poor gait pattern and a

natural tendency to over protect the foot was resulting in persistent pain. Explaining to Susan that arthritis will respond to movement and changing how she walked and used her foot produced immediate results and she was back in the gym. John, a 53-year-old crane driver, complained of low back pain for over 20 years. He came to the clinic with his wife who insisted he did something about this ongoing problem as he was not convinced physiotherapy could help. All the movements of the spine were normal apart from bending forwards. When asked why he could not bend he said, ‘I’ve a prolapsed disc’. His belief that he was damaged was causing him to avoid bending and further exacerbating the situation. Many people have prolapsed discs and most get better with simple movement. John made a full recovery within a few weeks. Brendan, a 35-year-old fitness instructor, had neck and shoulder pain for many years and had seen four therapists in the past who had rubbed and stretched his neck but had not changed his problem. He wanted to
return to weight training but he was told this was dangerous and he was becoming increasingly frustrated and worried about the future. Brendan was not damaged but he was using his body in a certain way that was pulling on his neck when he lifted weights. Joints and muscles are design to be loaded and this is the driving force to recovery. Avoiding activity, worrying about the future and living on a cocktail of medications is not providing a solution. Changing his lifting technique and re-educating how he used his body resulted in rapid improvements. o, you have accepted his/her proposal and are now dreaming of the perfect, sparkling white dress for your big day. The white dress is so synonymous with weddings, you would be forgiven for thinking blushing brides have always dressed this way. However, history buffs and marriage enthusiasts alike may be interested to learn that it hasn’t always been this way. Read on to discover the weird, wonderful – and not necessarily romantic – origins of the modern day wedding dress.

The dress Contrary to popular belief, the white dress wasn’t chosen to represent the purity and innocence of the bride, but became fashionable after Queen Victoria wore white for her wedding day in 1840. Victoria (the trend-setting Kardashian of her time) wore a plain white dress to marry Prince Albert simply because she liked the colour. But, she wasn’t the first to do so. Mary Queen of Scots wore white when she married Dauphin François of France in 1558. Although back then, this was considered scandalous, as white was traditionally worn by royal ladies in mourning. Before Victoria’s influential white dress, women of high social standing wore rich and bold colours to show off their status. Back in the Middle Ages, as it was routine for royals to marry for political gain rather than love, the bride needed to make sure she impressed the elite groom with her wealth and beauty. The wife-to-be was responsible for representing her country and so needed to exhibit power, wealth and superiority to be a desirable candidate for an alliance. To show these traits, the seamstress would use the most lavish materials, silk, satin and fur being popular choices. So by the time Victoria’s white dress came along, brides all over Britain wanted to follow suit. One popular lady’s monthly magazine described white as “the most fitting hue” for any bride. After that, white was considered the musthave colour and merchants saw this as an opportunity to up the prices of their garments. The white dress therefore became a symbol of wealth and desirability – a trend that is seemingly here to stay. Well, every bride wants to feel like a queen, right?
The veil and train
THE BOUQUET
The veil and train on the other hand, originated much further back in Roman times. Roman brides were swaddled from head to toe in a gigantic flame-coloured veil called the flammeum as it was believed its fiery appearance would scare off evil spirits. There is evidence to suggest that veils continued to be worn to protect brides’ faces well into medieval times. Similarly, bridesmaids wore similar dresses to the bride to confuse the spirits. The veil and train also prevented brides from running away from their grooms – and vice versa, as the bride’s face would usually only be revealed to the groom at the end of the ceremony. The lifting of the veil was also used as a symbol of the groom taking possession of his new wife and accepting her for all she was – for better or for worse. Moving closer to the modern day, everything a young princess wore on her wedding day was considered chic. Everyone wanted to emulate the regal style and as lengths of material signalled a more lavish and expensive dress, long trains were adopted by more ‘common’ brides – another element of the wedding dress that has stood the test of time.
Flowers may seem like the most romantic part of your wedding attire, but again, they were a device to ward off those pesky evil spirits. This ritual stems from a 17th century tradition of having fragrant herbs and plants such as garlic and dill in your bouquet. That’s right – garlic! The 1600s are famous for the plague epidemic and potent herbs like these were used in a desperate attempt to survive the disease. Not only were herbs thought to be good for your health (and as it turns out, rightly so), their strong scent was thought to ward off spirits. It will come as no surprise then, why would-be brides were keen to catch the bouquet – it wasn’t just their married life that depended on it. Female guests would also try to rip off pieces of the bride’s dress and flowers on her big day in order to obtain some of her good luck. The Sheffield Town Hall is an impressive Grade 1 listed Victorian building built in 1897 and is located right in the heart of the city. This unique venue is comprised of four large adaptable function areas and six stunning meeting rooms. Our larger rooms include our characteristic Reception Suite which can be divided in to two separate rooms and the Council Chamber which is able to accommodate larger conferences. In addition to our larger rooms our six meeting rooms can be utilised to either accompany large events as breakout space or used for smaller meetings. Located at the top of the Grand Staircase are the four entrances into the incomparable Reception Suite. The Reception Suite can be divided in to two private rooms each accommodating up to 120 delegates, alternatively the whole room can be used for any type of event and welcome a huge 220 guests. The Council Chamber can accommodate larger conferences for up to 150 delegates. This room is full of interesting details - the two; most striking details are the beautiful ceiling and the spectator area overlooking the Chamber. The entrance to the Council Chamber is via the Ante Room, located just off the Grand Staircase which shows pictures of all the previous Lord Mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, starting with the Duke of Norfolk in 1897. Here at the Sheffield Town Hall we have six meeting spaces, each varying in size and character. These rooms can accommodate between 11 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 40 guests, and are all a fixed boardroom layout. Neutral When it comes to weddings in warmer climates, opt for a cooler cream or beige suit. A more relaxed open collar shirt or coupled with a cravat (rather than a tie) work best, but check the dress code at your particular wedding. Chequered Like the floral dress, a chequered suit is always great for a spring or summer wedding. Go for a lighter shade and material. Thinner square outlines or full-on checks are both acceptable, but avoid full on tartan (unless you are going to a Scottish wedding). Depending on how casual you are allowed to go, try a plain blue suit and a blue and white chequered shirt.
Men Colourful tie If you feel more comfortable in a more traditional and darker coloured three-piece suit, why not brighten it up with a colourful tie or cravat? Choose a block colour tie in pink (on trend this year), red or a lower key colour such as purple. When it comes to cravats, you can be a little more playful with patterns. s well as being a market town with a thriving life of its own, Bakewell’s winning blend of beautiful scenery, attractive courtyards and independent shops, cafes and restaurants makes it a popular destination for visitors from close to home and further afield. Whether they come to shop, dine or feed the ducks, Bakewell is always buzzing with life. The setting on the River Wye, with the grand spire of All Saints Church watching over the ancient five-arched bridge, makes Bakewell one of the most photographed and painted spots in the Peak District National Park. Country comforts RACHEL MARTIN ENJOYS A RELAXING MEAL AT A COSY RURAL RETREAT. f you love nothing more than sitting in front of a roaring fire, working your way through the weekend papers while you also work your way through the selection of wines (or ales) at the bar, then the Samuel Fox Country Inn is the place for you. Located between Castleton and Hathersage, the Samuel Fox is a classic country inn serving up hearty food, a warm welcome and with a terrace looking onto Bradwell Edge. As we arrived on a classically British wintry day – howling gales, pouring rain and grey skies – we were initially seated in comfortable armchairs by the fire as we ordered our drinks and viewed the menu. And soon we were tucking into our complimentary bread selection, topped with lashings of salty butter and washed down with a glasses of house red and Farmers Blonde. We didn’t wait long for our first courses to arrive; I delved into the duck and port terrine, which was glazed in an excellent orange marmalade – not too sweet – and full of tiny chunks of orange rind and pistachios that added intense flavour and a contrasting texture. This was complemented further by the sharp, fruity savours of beetroot which cut

through the rich flavour of the meat. My partner’s Jerusalem artichoke soup was equally pleasing; hearty and smooth and topped with short strips of chorizo, cooked until soft and visibly bleeding flavour into their creamy companion. For mains I continued the gamey ‘theme’ and ordered the warming pheasant casserole and for my partner the roast blade of beef with fondant potato, purple sprouting broccoli, carrots, mushrooms and Yorkshire pudding. The casserole had all manner of delights swimming within it and was cooked to the point where the peaks of the accompanying mashed potato passed golden brown, making a crunchy foil to the sea of gravy below – in short, perfectly done. And my partner’s beef was beautifully presented, served with robust red wine gravy. There was a sticky toffee pudding to finish and the textures were particularly gorgeous, with plenty of crunchy caramelized nuts to contrast with the sweet stout ice cream. My partner had the chocolate brownie, which was soft, chewy and crunchy in all the right places and cranked up a notch with charred clementine segments and a dune of mocha sorbet and white chocolate. It ended our meal with a memorable flourish, the presentation
once again gaining top marks. The entire meal was beautifully cooked, well-presented, and delivered by friendly and helpful staff – it’s easy to see why they have been on the receiving end of many awards for culinary excellence – and if you ever find yourself in Bradwell, especially if you’re visiting nearby Hope Valley, I highly recommend you book a table – or room. If breakfast is of the same calibre, you’re certainly in for a treat. New look for an old favourite … AND THE FOOD IS A GOOD AS EVER, WRITES MOLLY MCGREEVY. t’s all change at Made By Jonty. After seven years on Sharrow Vale Road this popular daytime café has unveiled a new look. For talented chef/owner Jonty Cork, it’s also an opportunity to reveal a hidden talent – having completed a degree in furniture design before turning to food, he has personally created new booths for diners and rejigged the space to leave more room for those waiting to be seated. As anyone who has experienced the Made By Jonty lunchtime rush will testify, this is not before time… and the new look appears to be working well. Despite a packed café, on our latest visit we were met with the warmest of welcomes and soon led upstairs to our table. Before starting up on his own, Jonty worked in some of Sheffield’s finest dining establishments, taking the head chef role at both West 10 and Silversmiths. As water was placed on our table before we’d had a chance to settle, it’s obvious that old habits die hard, and Jonty’s is no greasy spoon. It’s not only in the little touches that Jonty’s fine dining background shines through - there’s not a cheese sandwich to be found on the lunch menu. Instead expect spiced beetroot yoghurt and white bean hummus on

the Falafel Plate (£8) and smoked haddock in the Omelette Arnold Bennet (£8). With our hearts set on brunch, we decided a return visit must be made to sample the lunch menu and set about making our selection – the Full Veggie (£9) for myself, and the Breakfast Burrito (£7.50) for my friend. It’s easy to be lazy over a vegetarian breakfast, simply swapping meaty elements for a couple of dry veggie sausages, but not at Jonty’s. What arrived at our table was a beautiful plate of fresh, colourful food featuring breakfast classics and some more contemporary brunch ingredients. Substance came from a stack of halloumi whilst spinach and avocado provided the greenery. Across the table, my friend’s burrito was packed with cheese and mushrooms, the tangy cheddar and touch of onion giving depth of flavour. On the side, a pot of freshly homemade salsa was both sweet and spicy. Although, brunch isn’t traditionally followed by dessert, it would be rude not to sample one of Jonty’s fabulous cakes – the long list of which was reeled off by memory upon request, as we sat a floor above the cake cabinet. After much deliberation, we opted for a
slice of the Lemon Drizzle (£2.80) and one of Carrot Cake (£2.80). The former was moist and spongy, the citrus drizzle oozing through the chunk of cake. The latter sweet and nutty, with a thick spread of icing between layers. The perfect accompaniment to our creamy cappuccinos, topped with beautiful stand-your-spoon-up-in-it froth. There may be a new look at Made By Jonty but some things never change. There will always be a menu of fresh and innovative dishes delivered by a service that matches that of the city’s finest dining establishments, and of course, the eggs will always be perfect. Onto a winner HANNAH SANDERS TRIES A NIGHT OUT WITH A DIFFERENCE AT NAPOLEONS. ith its plush velvet seats, private booths, cosy lighting and upmarket décor, Napoleons makes you feel closer to a Las Vegas casino than Ecclesall Road. Arriving just after 7pm on a chilly Tuesday evening we were some of the first customers of the night, but a steady throng soon followed and the restaurant filled with chatter and tempting aromas. We were greeted and seated in a luxurious private booth and ordered from the popular dine-in-style menu (£23) which included a drink, a three-course dinner and free £5 gaming chip – the perfect choice if you want a night out with a difference. The booth, with its gold velvet seats, was the perfect setting to relax with an old fashioned cocktail (£.6.95) while my designated driving partner went for a large coke (£2.50). Although they have a variety-filled menu which undergoes monthly changes – which is great if you like to re-visit favourite restaurants without having the same thing

twice – the standards when it comes to quality of the food and attentive service are reassuringly excellent. For my starter I opted for the potted ham hock with sour dough loaf, which was slightly salty and full of flavour, complemented by the fresh bread and sweet carrots. My partner went for the minestrone soup with baby mozzarella, packed full of an array of vegetables and partnered with a slice of crispy bread. For mains I chose the pan-fried sea bream. The chefs didn’t miss a mark when it came to the fish, which was cooked to perfection with a light and crisp skin and served on a bed of chorizo and tomato bean ragout. The crispy squid, piled high on top of the fish was beautifully cooked and very moreish. My partner went for the braised brisket of beef ‘bourguignon’, served on a bed of potato puree, along with a side of oven-roasted chips (£2). The slow-cooked meat was the winner of the night, with its rich and tender flavour, it retained its juices and melted in the mouth. Both mains came with a selection of seasonal
vegetables along with baby potatoes. Usually dessert provides the perfect ending to a meal – and although the pumpkin brownie (£4.95), with its fudge sauce and white chocolate ice cream hit the spot – on this occasion we headed downstairs to the casino to try our hand at roulette, where our luck just happened to be up, and we found there is nothing sweeter than beating the table. Fit for a king PHOEBE SEYMOUR SAMPLES A BANQUET FIT FOR ROYALTY AT PRITHI RAJ. here are some things about going to an Indian restaurant that make it an extra-special dining experience. It’s the little touches – dish after delicious dish served on silver platters, the warm lemonscented wet towels… And at Prithi Raj on Ecclesall Road, it’s the whole package and more. Well, what else would you expect from a restaurant whose name means ‘king of the world’? Regular diners at the restaurant will agree that the round table in the bay window with the chandelier above it is the best place to sit with large groups of friends or family, but the other tables and private booths, surrounded by contemporary décor in warming shades of pink and purple, were also a lovely place to unwind and enjoy a curry. My partner and I arrived on a weekday evening to find the restaurant near full and a couple of a members of staff ready to greet us. Seated at our table with two refreshing bottles of Cobra (330ml £3), we started with a couple of crisp poppadoms with a fresh pickle tray as we perused the extensive menu. For starters, I had the chicken tikka (£4.90), whilst my partner had the mixed kebab (£4.80). My chicken tikka was succulent and scarlet red, still sizzling in the pan on a bed of onions and peppers. My

partner enjoy the best of all worlds with juicy pieces of chicken tikka, a tender sheek kebab and crunchy-on-the-outside, soft-on-theinside onion bhaji. Choosing our mains was a difficult task but thankfully, owner Mizan Rahman was on hand to help. I was after a medium hot prawn curry, and Mizan had just the answer – the jal jinga with king prawns (£12.90). Meanwhile, my partner opted for a classic with a twist – the chicken raj korma (£10.50) – both from the chef specials menu. My partner’s curry was creamy and sweet, just as you would expect a korma to be, but with a subtle fruity flavour – it was a welcome change. My jal jinga was served in tomato-based sauce with green chillies and red Kenyan chillies, with a gorgeous hint of garlic coming through. Whilst it was not a particularly hot curry to begin with, it was a flavour which built gradually and left the corners of my smiling mouth tingling. These were served with boiled rice (£2.50), which ensured the variety of flavours from my curry could really come through, a garlic nan (£2.90) and – another brilliant recommendation from Mizan – a side of bhindi bhaji (£4.50). As a subtly warm, brown-red, tomato based curry, filled to the
brim with exotic pieces of okra that had just the right amount of crunch to them, it perfectly topped off this varied and gorgeous banquet. Finally, after cleaning up with a couple of aforementioned warm lemon-scented wet towels, we cleansed our palates with a juicy wedge of orange each – nothing more than a glass of water was needed. Playing to the Gallery THE FOOD, THE SERVICE AND THE SURROUNDINGS MAKE FOR A SPECIAL DINING EXPERIENCE IN DERBYSHIRE. BY CHRIS WILSON. he setting may be classic olde-worlde country house comfort, with friendly and attentive service to match, but dining in the Gallery Restaurant at the Cavendish is anything but an exercise in nostalgia. Head chef Alan Hill arrived at this glorious four-AA star 24-bedroom hotel on the Chatsworth Estate last summer, after 10 years working close by in the kitchens of two pubs also owned by the Devonshire family at Beeley and Pilsley. He has obviously been inspired by the opportunity to move up to the ‘big house’ and cook in such a grand setting, creating a delightful menu with an emphasis on fresh ingredients, locally sourced where possible, with the occasional twist. It’s a menu worth taking some time over, and we found the perfect spot for perusals and pre-dinner drinks in the lounge, on possibly the world’s most comfortable sofa in front of a roaring fire. The restaurant, with soft shades of duck egg blue on the walls and crisp white linen and Sheffield silver on the tables, is a winning blend of contemporary and classical and the same could be said about the beautifully judged food. After excellent fresh, warmed bread rolls my starter of Roscoff onion mousse, served

with parmesan chips, pickled onions and burnt onion ketchup, was light, delicately flavoured and thoroughly tasty. My companion’s soused Cornish mackerel, partnered with slightly tart still-crisp rhubarb and toasted pain d’epices (rye bread) won a rave review too. These were also very pretty and elegant plates of food, a theme that would continue throughout the evening. My main course of roast salt aged sirloin of beef was the last word in juicy tenderness and came with sweet onion, parsnip puree and parmentier potatoes. It was not a massive plateful but with so many big flavours, this was a satisfying dish to linger over and appreciate every mouthful. As designated driver I was looking for a red wine to do justice to the beef. The Cavendish has a terrific and varied list, including a great selection by the glass. As luck would have it, they also had a rather special Amarone, normally only available by the bottle, already opened. A single glass (£11.70) of this rich, dry masterpiece was the perfect companion. Just as memorable, our second main was a perfect fillet of Cornish line caught sea bass with Porthilly oyster beignet, spinach, shrimp, mussels, tarragon and cavalo nero. For dessert my hot chocolate fondant, with griottine cherries, cherry ice cream and hazelnut praline, required an extra 15 minutes
or so of cooking time. You can probably picture the scene as I gently thrust a spoon into the fondant and the deep, dark, rich chocolate slowly trickled onto the plate. Oh yes… it was worth the wait. There was also a fantastic cheese board and a return to our spot by the fire for coffee and petit fours. The food alone makes dinner at the Cavendish special; add the service and the setting and it’s an experience to relish and remember for a long time. Dinner in the Gallery Restaurant is £49.50 for three courses. You can also dine at the Kitchen Table soaking up the atmosphere and watching chefs at work, or for more a more relaxed experience, try the Garden Room. After founding business partners Maurizio Mori and Gian Bohan decided to split the business, taking one restaurant each, the former set about revamping and reinvigorating the Ecclesall Road venue – and it’s been non-stop ever since. The introduction of live music nights on Wednesdays and Thursdays has broadened its appeal further (and helped to extend the feelgood weekend atmosphere), while the authentic Italian coffee bar vibe and £5.95 pasta, served between 5-7pm, ensures the restaurant is busy at all times. Thankfully there are plenty of staff to keep things ticking over just as they should. Service, on the evening of our visit, was impeccable throughout. Our quieter (although not that quiet) Tuesday night – surely some respite is needed? – was the perfect time to relax and indulge; the wonderful aromas emanating from the kitchen only increased our anticipation further. The menu leans more towards traditional Italian and, in my opinion, is all the better for it. There’s a good choice of antipasti, pasta and secondi (main courses), as well as platters to share – the meat and fish varieties sounded heavenly. We decided broader strokes would

work better for the benefit of this review and set out to get a more rounded view of what was on offer. A starter of Crostata di formaggio di capra (£6.75) demonstrated finesse and flavour; the balance between the salty goats’ cheese, sweet beetroot and caramelised red onions was just right. Across the table my fritto misto (£7), a lightly battered selection of squid, prawn and cod, was devoured with gusto – the accompanying salsa verde mayo was delicious too. My wife’s main course of agnello – braised lamb shank (£18) – served with a wellmatched celeriac purée and baby carrots, was fall-off-the-bone tender and full of flavour. A glass of primitivo di Manduria (£8.75, 250ml) was the perfect accompaniment. For me, Nonnas’ pasta cooking – the mark of any good Italian restaurant – passed the test with flying colours. Trofie (£10.50), a short, thin, twisted pasta from Liguria, is not something you usually find on menus over here but is definitely worth a try. Served with tenderstem broccoli, gorgonzola and a delicious nut sauce, it was unctuous, indulgent and light enough to leave room for dessert – “the best part of the meal,” beamed our cameriere. He was almost right too (the pasta won the day for me). My wife’s almond milk panna
cotta (£7), served with a mango and mint compote and vanilla crumble was light and fresh-tasting, while my chocolate and beetroot cake (£7) was a taste sensation. The richness of the cake was delightfully balanced by the underlying subtle taste of the vegetable, sour amarena cherries and a healthy dollop of mascarpone. Delicious. We ended the meal with a nutty Frangelico liqueur and an espresso. Nonnas has evolved over the last year or so but it’s easy to see why it’s the place to be on Ecclesall Road. The staples of its success – good coffee, fine wine, traditional food and a buzzing atmosphere – remain. We just need the sun to break out now so we can hit the terrace. pring’s here…well let’s not bust out the paddling pools just yet! But there have been those odd days where you step outside and think, hang on just a second, I don’t quite need the full thermals and double winter gloves, or in non-cycling terms, I don’t need the winter jacket, hat, gloves and scarf! The problem is, one day it’s 15 degrees and were all walking around in short sleeves like its summer, the next, its two degrees and sleeting, and that is why, as my mum would say, everyone is getting ill, there seems to be a lot if “it” about. I think “it” is a horrible winter cold that hangs around for weeks. A bike shop, probably more than any other shop I can think of, sees summer coming. First, the work shop starts to get very busy, everyone getting that puncture fixed for that ride around the reservoir, the bike fit studio is full most days and the visitors to the store start showing interest in

buying the bikes and not just kicking the tires. The long-established cyclists start looking at the new bikes for the year and the racing guys are eying up those new carbon wheels and sun glasses that look like you could survive the space shuttle re-entry process. In other news, we are proud to have been awarded a grant to install a Yorkshire Bank bike library at Full Gas bikes. This is a great initiative which makes bike available for anyone and everyone to loan out. With all that going on, with events almost weekly to get everyone ready for the Tour de Yorkshire, if you haven’t visited Full Gas bikes at Fox Valley yet, you really should, you don’t know what you’re missing. Places for People raises more than £5,000 got heart charity Places for People Leisure Centres in Sheffield have announced that their partnership with the British Heart Foundation (BHF) has raised £5,074 towards the fight for every heartbeat. Around 7 million people are currently living with cardiovascular disease in the UK and the funds raised will help support the BHF’s research into preventing and treating these devastating conditions. Staff and members at Graves Health and Sports Centre, Wisewood Sport Centre and Thorncliffe Health and Leisure Centre got involved by holding wear red events, raffles, and auctions, plus encouraged everyone to donate bags of stock to fill local BHF shops. Jo Strong, Cardiac Rehab Instructor also took on the Helsinki Marathon to raise funds. “We are so pleased to have raised so much money to support their vital work. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our employees, customers and suppliers in helping us make a real difference,” said Alex Greaves, contract manager. “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped make our partnership with Places for People Leisure such a success. Too many lives are lost to heart and circulatory conditions each year, and the money raised from this partnership will play a crucial role in helping us find new ways to help keep more hearts beating,” adds Lauren Mallinson, partnerships manager at BHF.

Prestige award for Brocco on the Park Sheffield’s boutique hotel and neighbourhood kitchen Brocco on the Park has received a Silver award in the UK’s Free From Eating Out Awards, for its selection of vegetarian, gluten-free and other specialist dishes. The awards recognise eateries that alter the menu or provide specialist dishes for diners with specialist dietary solutions. Brocco was selected as one of the most innovative and accommodating kitchens in the B&B and Guest House category. Tiina Carr, owner of Brocco on the Park, said: ““We’re thrilled to have been awarded a Silver in the FreeFrom Awards. SUPER DESIRABLE The F12 is dead, long live the 812 Superfast. Say hello everyone to Ferrari’s flagship V12 supercar. Powered by a 789hp 6.5-litre V12, the 812 Superfast is the most powerful naturallyaspirated car the company has ever created. 062mph takes just 2.9 seconds, exactly the same time at the special edition F12tdf, with a top speed of over 211mph. As with the F12 and F12tdf, the 812 Superfast sends its power to the rear wheels only via a instantaneous seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Where the F12 was all about beautiful curves, the 812 uses sharp edged angles to make up its appearance. It’s certainly more aggressive looking. The interior has been given a more luxurious feel with a whole host of new technologies fitted.
Pocket rocket The Audi RS3 is one of the most powerful hot hatchbacks in the world. With 362hp produced from its 2.5-litre five cylinder engine, coupled with four-wheel drive and a quick shifting DSG gearbox, it can sprint from rest to 62mph in just 4.3 seconds. Not exactly slow. Now though, Audi has upped the power stacks even higher – power for the Audi RS3 now weights in at 395hp, making it the most powerful hot hatchback on the planet. 0-62mph is reduced to 4.1 seconds and the top speed is limited to 155mph. Derestricted, it can hit 174mph. The interior has been changed slightly with the introduction of the Audi virtual cockpit display. Pricing yet to be confirmed. Available to order in the summer.

Racing pedigree With the imminent arrival of this year’s F1 campaign, Aston Martin has unveiled its latest additions to the Vantage range; the V8 and V12 Vantage S Red Bull Racing Editions. Taking inspiration from Red Bull Racing’s distinctive livery, owners will be treated to a deep Mariana Blue paint finish as standard with red infills on the carbon fibre grille and yellow brake callipers.
