FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE
Functional medicine is a personalised and integrative approach to healthcare which involves understanding the prevention, management and root causes of complex chronic diseases. The ultimate goal is to heal disease and promote a healthy life. A healthy life is not defifined as simply an absence of disease, but rather a positive vitality filled with energy, joy, gratitude and balance.
The Functional Medicine model evolved from the insights and perspectives of a group of influential scientific leaders who realised the importance of a personalised approach to disease causes based on the evolving research in nutritional science, genomics, and epigenetics.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Functional medicine gives Dr Hula the clinical decisionmaking tools they need to navigate the landscape of illness by exploring all relevant mechanisms. Your personal treatment plan is backed by scientific research. Part of this research involves selecting the most appropriate tests to get the best possible results relevant to you.

It’s beginning to look a lot like CHRISTMAS
Rajdhani are getting ready for the festive season.
e maybe approaching October but many of us have barely given Christmas a second thought. I certainly hadn’t. After all, it feels like we’ve only just got back from summer holidays so the thought of dark nights, cold weather and festive cheer feels far removed from where we are now.
But for many, the planning starts now.
Especially in the hospitality industry where restaurants and venues are putting and events.
One such place is Rajdhani at Dore train station, who were keen for us to sample their Christmas Day offering before unveiling it to their customers.

The Deli at Greystones brings great food and good cheer to this S11 suburb, writes Richard Abbey.

With the support of his family, Andy decided to take the plunge and try something completely different. Such has been the success of Kelham Deli & Kitchen that Andy decided to expand his little empire and open a second venueThe Deli at Greystones - which he did in February of this year.
It’s located on Greystones Road opposite The Greystones pub and is of a decent size; there’s tables both inside and out, both of which were occupied on the day of

Much of the produce is sourced locally, including bread from Welbeck Abbey, pastries from 4Eyes Patisserie, coffee from Frazer’s Coffee Roasters and Andy also collects a daily supply of bhajis from The Bhaji Shop. And don’t be surprised

We arrived mid-morning so was a little early for lunch but were spoilt for choice when it came to other options. After ordering coffees - a cappuccino (£3.60)
- we took a window seat and left it up to Andy to recommend some food options.
A bacon and brie sandwich served on focaccia (£6.90) married the time between breakfast and lunch perfectly and had that perfect union of gooey cheese, crisp bacon and caramelised onions for a touch of sweetness.
We also opted for one of the most

Andy also suggested we try on of their quiches, which are made especially for the deli. The cheese and broccoli version (£7.50 with salad) was excellent; served warm it had good pastry and a delicious

Made for SHARING
A new small plates menu enhances the appeal of The Dark Horse even further, writes Richard Abbey.
The Dark Horse is everything you would want from a local. It’s warm, it’s welcoming, it serves good beer as well an extensive drinks selection and has really ingratiated itself into the Banner Cross community over the last few years.
And, as an added bonus, it serves food.
Since opening in 2022, The Dark Horse has partnered with concession Slap and Pickle, who serve seriously good burgers made from 40-day, dry-aged Swaledale beef as well as chicken and vegan versions as well as loaded fries.
There has been various tweaks to the menu in that time but the latest is the introduction of a small plates menu (three
chicken Kiev bites; wings - with a choice of buffalo, BBQ or hoisin sauces; buffalo cheese bites; loaded onion rings; and mozzarella sticks. For the purpose of the review, it only felt fair to sample them all and with four of us dining we added in a couple of burgers (with fries) for good measure. There was more than enough to leave us feeling full at the end of the meal. Drinks are always a good place to start
at The Dark Horse and as well as the numerous draught beers, wine and spirits available, the venue is also well known for its cocktails, particularly during ‘Happy Hour’ where you can enjoy two of the same kind for just £12. This runs from 5-7pm Monday to Friday and 12-5pm on Sundays. A Tom Collins was just the thing for my wife whilst I welcomed a cold glass of Warsteiner German beer (£5.70).
Summer cocktail selections include a Sweet Summer Tea, Highland Honey Smash and a Berry Moo, all £9.50, and The Dark Horse has also partnered with Casamigos Tequila to produce three bold creations. Non-drinkers are also catered for with a selection of six different mocktails which are £5 each or two for £8.
But lets get back to the food.
Seated in one of the venue’s three booths, we had plenty of room to spread out and, more importantly, space for the multiple plates of food, which arrived promptly after ordering at the bar.
We’d opted for BBQ wings which were deliciously sticky as you’d expect and we really liked the chicken Kiev bitesthink popcorn-style chicken drizzled in a
garlic and herb mayo - and the mozzarella sticks, which had been dusted in parmesan and served with a spicy ketchup dip.
The buffalo cheese bites added further spiciness to the plates whilst the beerbattered onion rings were incredibly indulgent, smothered in a cheese sauce and crispy bacon bits.
On the burger front we ordered Slap and Pickle’s take on the classic bacon cheeseburger - The Baconator (£16) - as well one developed just for The Dark Horse - The Mardy Bun (£15.50) - which came with a stout and Henderson’s Relish cheese rarebit, smoked bacon, shredded lettuce, pickles and crispy onions. Both were excellent - just prepared to get messy!
The Dark Horse’s reputation for its burgers has built up over the last few years and this will only be enhanced with the addition of the small plates. After all, food was made for sharing.

Next, we indulge in Jijo’s Halloumi burger – layered with tangy sriracha maple mayo and gherkins on a soft brioche bun alongside a lavish portion of chips and garden salad (£16.75). Crafting emotionTHROUGH FORM
Inside the world of Scott Allan. By Kieron Williams.
cott Allan Limited is a studio where design doesn’t just meet function, it tells a story. Founded by designer Scott Allan, the brand is known for creating contemporary homeware pieces that blend natural materials with architectural forms, all made with integrity and purpose.
From a young age, Allan was fascinated by how things worked and why they looked the way they did. What began as a childhood obsession with dismantling toys evolved into a deeper fascination with form and engineering, eventually leading him to study Transport Design at Coventry University. But it was a teacher – and a collection of Alessi homeware – that introduced him to design’s emotional resonance.
“At that point, I realised the ability of design to express emotion,” he recalls.
After years working in a consultancy on large-scale design projects, Allan found himself yearning for more creative autonomy.
“I longed for the ability to take control of the design process, from conception of an
The result was the launch of Scott Allan Limited, a brand that now channels his inquisitive nature into tactile, minimalist pieces that invite use and spark conversation.
Allan’s design process is anything but linear. Ideas emerge from everyday observations – a curious texture here, a small problem waiting to be solved there. Several concepts develop in parallel until one naturally takes precedence.
“Over time, one will tend to take prominence, which will then be worked up into a manufacturable object,” he explains.
Each piece is a subtle dance between traditional techniques and modern technologies, united by a commitment to product innovation and understated elegance.
The studio’s location plays no small part in shaping this aesthetic.
“This unique juxtaposition of the wildness says.
A love of contrasts is woven into his work, from material pairings to form. Take his Earthenware vessel, for instance: an angular, architectural silhouette softened by a hand-hammered pewter liner, each with its own unique undulations. It’s an object that embodies both precision and imperfection.
Bringing these pieces to life hasn’t been without challenges. Sourcing materials and forging partnerships with British manufacturers required tenacity and no small amount of trial and error.
“It wasn’t unusual to go through several desperately needed,” Allan says.
But perseverance, he adds, has been the most valuable lesson of all.
While many designers chase trends, Allan deliberately resists them.
“Good design will stand the test of time,” he says.
His focus instead lies in craftsmanship,
sustainability, and emotional connection.
Materials are chosen with care and often tell their own story., whether it’s Blackwood, celebrated for its rich natural colour, or earthenware selected for its warmth over more polished alternatives.
Sustainability isn’t a slogan here; it’s a principle. By designing timeless, durable objects and steering clear of fast-changing aesthetics, Allan encourages a slower, more meaningful consumer culture.
“Careful consideration is always given to how a material is sourced and what may become of it at the end of its usable life.”
Looking ahead, Allan hopes to expand his range, though the reality of being entirely self-funded means every new product is a calculated investment. One piece he’s excited to launch is a contemporary pewter jar, an effort to reimagine a traditional material and present it in a way that feels fresh and relevant.

Tea and The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop united for a unique tea blend launch.
hen Yorkshire Tea were looking for a venue to launch their latest tea blend, there was only one choice - The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop.
WThe shop was transformed into a visual delight of bright pink boxes, complemented by eye-catching displays of puddings and tarts, for the unveiling of Cherry Bakewell Brew, which is part of Yorkshire Tea’s ‘Proper Brew’ range. These elements perfectly captured the essence of this new tea, which uses natural
The Great British Bake Off’s charismatic star, Liam Charles, welcomed visitors who sampled the new brew and shared feedback with the Yorkshire Tea team.
“I think the Cherry Bakewell Brew is lovely, the smell and taste are remarkable and unmatched,” said Jemma Beagrie, managing director of The Bakewell Pudding Shop. “I’m a huge Yorkshire Tea fan - it’s a brew that we drink at home and we only use in our restaurant and tea rooms. We are such close neighbours with Yorkshire, so what better place than the

The tea was developed by Kate Halloran, who is Tea Development Manager at Yorkshire Tea. She said: “I loved Cherry Bakewell tarts when I was a kid, so I was excited by the challenge of coming up with the recipe for a proper brew that matched my memories of these iconic bakes. The result is a naturally sweet blend that works a treat with or without milk. I can’t wait for people to give it a try!”
Coming up with a new brew takes Yorkshire Tea about a year from start to of the taste is that cherry sweetness. It feels like you’re eating a Cherry Bakewell and you’re having a cup of tea at the same time.
Yorkshire Tea worked with creative agency Lucky Generals to come up with a plan to take over Bakewell’s iconic The Original Bakewell Pudding Shop for the
day. Fortunately the team there were really happy to help.
“When we started to think about how we were going to launch our new brew, we all knew that we needed to come and get the approval of the people of Bakewell,” added Penny Webster, brand manager for Yorkshire Tea. “We loved being part of the town for the day and want to thank everyone from the Original Bakewell Pudding Shop and the town who helped us make it the best launch yet. We met so many lovely people and, luckily, we seem to have got the thumbs up for our new brew!”
If you’re wondering how best to drink the tea, Kate designed it be served either with milk or without, but recommends with milk and that it should be brewed for 3-4 minutes.
The ‘Proper Breaks’ brew range has been around for a little while; Cherry and Caramelised Biscuit Brew, which has a lovely hint of toasted sugar and spices. The brew is currently available in Morrisons and will be available from other retailers later in the year.
