A life full of memories FROM THE TERROR OF THE BLITZ TO HAPPY HOLIDAYS ON THE FAMILY CANAL BOAT, SIGNATURE LOXLEY PARK RESIDENT ENA HAS HAD A RICH AND VARIED LIFE. ood Friday in 1933 was a beautiful spring day, with the daffodils in bloom and the sun shining. There was a party going on in the village of Saxelby and Grimstone, near Melton Mowbray, with the entire village out celebrating the first baby born in 13 years.

She was six weeks premature, weighed only three-and-a-half pounds and was called Ena Wright.

Ena lived happily in the village for the early part of her childhood, before the family moved to a village outside Leicester when she was four. It was at nine that Ena witnessed one of the most momentous and horrific events of the Second World War. At the height of the Blitz, on the night of the 14th November 1940, over 400 Luftwaffe bombers attacked Coventry. Although the city was far away from her little village, the devastation filled the skies.

“It’s always stuck in my memory. My dad and I stood in the garden and watched the skies, which were filled with terror. We turned on the news the next day and Coventry had completely gone.”

When the war ended and normality returned, Ena was able to indulge her love of sport. As a teenager she represented her county in both rounders and netball. When she wasn’t on the sports field she spent a lot of time in her local church, which put on activities for youngsters in the village.

“We would go nearly every day, playing games and performing in concerts. I used to play the piano and the room was filled with people singing and dancing.”

After the war, village life was enriched by the arrival of an influx of Londoners looking to start a new life. The newcomers also added to the zip of the local church concerts.

Ena’s school holidays were often spent with her beloved grandparents, either cockling on the coast of Norfolk or joining them at work.

“My grandmother worked in the kitchen at Holkham Hall for Lord Leicester and my grandpa looked after the gate; I used to visit in the school holidays and I even met Princess Margaret. She used to Ena Negus ride in the grounds on horseback with her friends and they asked me if I’d like to try it but I never dared – I thought I’d get on one side of the horse and fall off the other!”

anet damaged her knee several years ago during a skiing holiday.

This resolved and several years later whilst stepping over a stile she fell and twisted the same knee. After a couple of weeks hobbling around and applying ice to the swollen knee she started to improve. She was sent for a scan that showed that her anterior cruciate ligament (central knee ligament) had snapped.

She wanted to avoid surgery as she worried about the possible complications such as infection, wound healing and the possible effects of the general anaesthetic. The surgeon said she needed surgery to repair the ligament. What should she do?

This is a common scenario seen at Hallamshire Physiotherapy Clinic.

The research suggests that a conservative approach is the best approach initially as most injuries resolve with strengthening and restoration of normal muscle control around the knee. If you don't improve after a year of the injury, then surgery may be an option. Understandably, Janet was confused and needed help making a decision. She received help from her GP who agreed that a conservative approach was sensible.

From my experience, the willingness to go under the knife shown by members of the public is not seen in people who work in the health industry. Maybe they have a better understanding of the risk/benefits of surgery and will only consider an operation after extensive physiotherapy.

Surgery can have amazing results, but doesn’t always have to be the first option.

Recovery from surgery can be long and protracted and necessitate long periods off work or other activities.

Janet avoided surgery and returned to full activities that included running and tennis. The knee just got stronger with use and progressive loading. It is amazing how the body can repair itself with time and correct physiotherapy. Come and get a second opinion at Hallamshire Physiotherapy Clinic.

Fertility. Vidya first joined the department in 2011, working as a clinical research fellow. She has been involved in several research studies and led in the study looking at the emotional health in patients undergoing assisted conception.

During 2013 she worked in the obstetrics and gynaecology department of the Jessop Wing and in 2014, she returned to Jessop Fertility as a consultant. Vidya works alongside Clinical Head Jonathan Skull and other consultants in the unit to provide a full and comprehensive service and active research programme aimed to improve the outcome of treatments The unit has a private entrance and a welcoming reception. During the first visit a couple meets with a Doctor to discuss the best treatment option. The centre offers a full and

comprehensive range of assisted conception techniques such as IVF, Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), and treatment with donor sperm and eggs. The centre utilises all the latest technology such as time lapse with no additional costs for the patients. Having researched the emotional effects of assisted conception on couples, Vidya specialises and leads the centre’s donor egg programme alongside a dedicated nurse specialist.

Although many couples have fertility issues some women receive the dreadful news that their own eggs are not suitable for use or they may not produce their own eggs at all.

This can be for several reasons. Some women may undergo early menopause or may not produce eggs because they have had cancer treatment or medications in early life. Having the chance to have a family taken away from them is devastating. Their only hope to achieve a pregnancy is to receive donated eggs.

Women choose to donate eggs for different

reasons, many have completed their family or just simply want to help others experience the joy of parenthood. Some couples, who need treatment themselves, choose to donate half their eggs in return for a reduction in their treatment costs. Donors can receive up to £750 compensation but many believe giving the gift of life far outweighs the money received.

All enquiries to donate are directed to the nurse specialist. After the initial discussion an appointment will be arranged to explain the process in depth. If the donor is suitable to enter the programme an appointment is arranged to see Vidya. At this appointment a detailed medical and family history is taken and the journey begins.

The team make sure they take good care of their donors. Donors have appointments with the counsellors to ensure they fully understand the implications of donating and are supported throughout. Vidya sees many women wanting to donate their eggs, and

states ‘it is an amazing gift for them to give’.

As well as looking after the donors, Vidya sees couples waiting to receive donor eggs.

For Vidya helping and supporting couples through their journey is the best part of her job ‘there is nothing like seeing the joy when they achieve a pregnancy, and then when they return with their baby; it is simply joyous’.

Although treatment does result in many babies being born, support is given to those who may not get pregnant straight away, the staff appreciate how upsetting it is when treatment doesn’t work and the medical and nursing team along with the counsellors always offer their full support.

Weather watcher Lucia takes the art of coffee making to another level When the judges said it was her “unrivalled love and passion” that put Nonnas barista Lucia Gadau, 41, head and shoulders above her rivals across the country, they weren’t joking.

Whilst most baristas start their working day when they take their first morning order, the newly crowned Best Barista in England is hard at work from the minute she wakes up – she says there’s nothing more important to the perfect cup of coffee than checking the weather forecast.

Vital help of charity support nurse highlighted by heart failure mum A Derbyshire woman who suffered heart failure whilst pregnant has praised a Sheffield Hospitals Charity funded nurse who helped her bond with her baby during her lifesaving care.

Ruth Clout, aged 39, from Chapel-en-le-Frith, was admitted to the Jessop Wing Hospital at 33 weeks pregnant purely as a precaution, after suffering coughing and breathlessness.

It was there that doctors diagnosed Ruth’s shocking heart condition, prompting baby William to be delivered early and the mother and son were separated. But thanks to the help of Family Support Nurse Sandra Brown, Ruth and her family found a way to cope with their traumatic ordeal.

Ruth stayed in hospital for two weeks and during this period Sandra ensured she saw William on a daily basis. Initially she arranged for him to be transferred by ambulance to see Ruth, and then when he was well enough, she took him over in a car seat. Without Sandra’s help, Ruth would not have seen her baby and would have missed out on his early development.

Sandra Brown is funded by Sheffield Hospitals Charity and helps parents deal with their baby’s stressful journey through the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit by providing information, emotional support and practical advice.

Grassroots teams were invited to write into the nationwide event, along with a photo of themselves, explaining why the money would help them during the season.

“The competition was fierce, but the fact they are a young team with a grassroots theme made them outright winners,” said Gary. “It would be great for the boys and grassroots football to be celebrated and we hope this will inspire others to get involved.”

The team members’ mothers also joined in a free-to-play game and won the highest score in the country, along with a team prize of £1,500, whilst Emma Wasden won the highest individual score in the country and a prize of £500, bringing their total winnings to an impressive £3,000.

ou may know Chris Walker as Rob Hollins, a policeman in BBC daytime soap Doctors, but when he isn’t donning his uniform in front of the cameras, Chris loves to entertain at home, throwing dinner parties for his friends and family.

Chris’s love for food led him to compete in Celebrity Masterchef, where he reached the semi-finals, creating wonderful dishes for judges Greg Wallace and John Torode, but his passion for cooking began when he left the family home in Yorkshire and moved to London.

“Cooking wasn’t that important to me until I left home, then I started making standard things like a Bolognese or a chilli and I became fascinated,” said Chris.

Fuelled by his new found love for food, Chris started collecting cookbooks and now has a couple of hundred at home, covering every cuisine imaginable. He would often prepare meals for fellow actors whilst touring the UK, and this soon grew into hosting dinner parties.

Chris’s prowess in the kitchen didn’t go unnoticed, and a friend at The Regent Hotel, Doncaster, asked him to host gourmet nights on a Friday, each one themed round a different cuisine.

“I cooked nine-course gourmet meals for up to 44 people, I wanted to prove to myself by charging people money. When you invite people round to your house they’re not going to tell you the food is rubbish, because that would be rude. But people will when they have to pay for it, I charged quite a lot of money and people kept coming back again and again, so that was great.”

For Chris, food is about bringing people together around the table. He said: “These days things have changed, there’s so much food you can microwave and so many takeaways available. When I was a lad people sat round the table and shared family times, and that is what is important to me, to create that ambience.”

With so much entertaining experience, Chris shared his tips and tricks for throwing a wonderful dinner party.

“The thing about dinner parties is that the host has to be there, if the host is in the kitchen all the time, it ruins the evening for them and their guests. A host should get a chance to sit round the table and talk, because that’s what food is all about. That’s one of the most important things about food, it should bring people together.

It’s all about preparation at a dinner party, that’s the real secret. You need a starter that is made up, a main course that can be left, and a pre-made dessert, whether that be hot or cold. I recommend using your slow cooker, make something two days before and it’ll improve in the fridge.

On the day itself, you’re presenting food rather than cooking it – that’s the key to it all.

You don’t want to be serving fillet steak to eight people when you have to cook it to order, that’s restaurant stuff. That doesn’t make for a conducive dinner party.”

ON ARRIVAL “You want some nibbles out already, something that people can get stuck into straight away like olives, especially if you’re inviting people who haven’t met before. Make sure there’s a drink waiting for them, either a cocktail or a glass of bubbles.”

TO START “A smoked mackerel pate works very well.

You can buy the mackerel already smoked and mix it through with some crème fraiche and some capers. Stir through some sultanas soaked with wine and serve that with some salad, some melba toast, butter and you’re done.”

MAIN “Try ox cheek, it’s just amazing, it’s superb.

Cook it for six to eight hours in the slow cooker and it’ll be the best beef you’ve ever tasted. I do it a day or two before, put a bottle of wine in there, put carrots in huge and whole and leave them to cook.

I would brown the beef first, cut it into big pieces, and then add red wine, beef stock and huge vegetables, also add onions and thicken it later using either cornflour or a mixture of butter and plain flour in a paste.”

Where to source ingredients “Use your local market. Of course we all use supermarkets, but if you get a good relationship with your butcher and your fishmonger they’ll help you, they’ll hang meat for you longer than a supermarket will, they’ll give you special cuts, they’ll look after you.”

Drinks “Always team drinks and wine. The first thing is not to be scared of wine, it’s there to be enjoyed. No one should be snobbish about wine, in this day and age you can get some great wines for a really good price. You can get a lovely bottle of wine for five or six quid, but if you’re having a dinner party and want to make it a bit special, pay a bit more and it’s so much better.

Matching wine to food is great fun. You want to start with a white wine or a sparkling wine, or you can do cocktails, then move onto red, then port and brandy.

A good idea for dinner parties is to choose a cocktail and make it in a punchbowl, at the moment I’m loving pornstar martinis. Make it up in a nice big bowl, don’t put ice in it, instead fill empty spirit bottles ¾ full with water and freeze them. That keeps the cocktail cold and doesn’t dilute it. Get a ladle and everyone can serve themselves.”

background music, like my food I like everything. I love classical, I love jazz, I love heavy rock, you want to be putting on something a bit background.

If you’re serving at Christmas, obviously get some carols and some Bublé on, or a bit of Nat King Cole. It depends how you’re theming your dinner party, during the World Cup and other football tournaments I choose a theme based on a team playing. For example you might do Brazilian food and choose your music accordingly.”

Good food, good wine and good company – the ingredients for a successful dinner party

For a more informal dinner party “There are lots of great ideas to make a dinner party less formal. One thing you can do is get a leg of lamb and cook it until it falls apart and then shred that on the table.

Then have lots of wraps and different ingredients so people can make their own wraps; you can do that with beef and pork as well.

If you’re going to do South East Asian or Chinese food get all the ingredients in bowls in front of everyone with part-cooked veg and meat, then serve a lovely homemade stock in teapots on the table so guests can pour their own red hot stock into their bowl and everything becomes warm again, usually served with noodles. You could do the same with Mexican. It’s nice to put big bowls of food on the table and let people help themselves, that breaks the ice as well.”

One final tip?

“Go and read up on what you’re going to do.

Don’t be afraid of food, don’t ever apologise for your food in front of your guests and be confident. Don’t poison anyone though, you don’t want your guests being ill.”

Words from a famous Dubliners’ song but an apt description of the Lady Captain who arrived to greet our visiting party at Killorglin Golf Club in Kerry.

It may not be the best course in the South West of Ireland or the most famous but in terms of hospitality, spirit and warmth it has few rivals. Anne Kenny Foley was justifiably brimming with pride when she met us and introduced us to the club. The civility extended to a serenade over lunch, performed by the chef on accordion and her daughter on vocals. A shared pint of the “Black Stuff ” with club members merely enhanced the atmosphere of mirth and merriment. Only in Ireland…

clubhouse, with its panoramic windows, provides stunning views across the country with the course framed on one side by the Macgillicuddy Reeks Range (including Carrauntouhill, Ireland’s highest mountain) and Dingle Bay and the Slieve Mish mountains beyond.

The course, costing a mere 25 euros a round, is only 20 minutes from Killarney, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ireland. It lies at the heart of Killarney National Park with its lakes and mountains providing the perfect location for walking, cycling, boating, fishing and of course golf.

From our base, the rather grand and comfortable Hotel Arbutus in the heart of the town, we enjoyed rounds at three other courses but Killarney can also be used as a

starting point to enjoy the rugged and beautiful Wild Atlantic Way. The Wild Atlantic Way is a 1,500 mile driving route along the west coast of Ireland passing through nine counties and three provinces, stretching from County Donegal’s Inishowen peninsula in the north to what is commonly known as Ireland’s culinary capital in the south, Kinsale.

A tourist going south from Killarney can head for Skibbereen, firstly navigating the beautiful Ring of Kerry, the Iveragh peninsula. Beauty and heritage are fused in this part of the world. On the one hand there is the beautiful Rossbeigh beach – one of Europe’s finest – and on the other hand there is the heritage of Derrynane House – former home to Daniel O’Connell, “The Liberator”.

“There is a feeling at both north and south extremes of the Wild Atlantic Way that you are on the edge of the world.” take you through stunning scenery as you head to Dursey Sound, Castletownbere Harbour and the popular Glengarriff. Don’t forget to take in the verdant gardens on Garnish Island and enjoy the views at Bantry Bay. Get to Baltimore Harbour, outside Skibbereen, and you realise there is nothing but water between you and the next piece of land – America. The countryside is enchanting with loughs running into the sea and walking trails around and on top of rugged coastal promontories.

A long holiday or a number of trips would be needed to appreciate the Wild Atlantic Way in all its glory as there so many highlights. At the north there is the magical district of Connemara where turquoise, crystal clear water laps unspoilt, white sand beaches and ancient thatched, cottages dot the horizon.

Go south on the route from Connemara and take in the party city of Galway, the stunning Cliffs of Moher and the Dingle Peninsula, famed for its clifftop views of the crashing Atlantic waves below. Be brave and drive the Conor Pass. If you’re lucky you may

catch sight of Dingle’s famed aquatic visitor, Fungi, the Dolphin.

This part of Ireland is also home to some of the country’s finest restaurants, which is no surprise given the quality and volume of local produce. Rozzers restaurant at Killeen House Hotel in Killarney is a perfect example: fine local food supported by a great atmosphere.

Ashes Restaurant in Dingle offers the same: the turbot I sampled was exceptional.

The Wild Atlantic Way must also be unique in being home to some of the best golf courses in the world in such a condensed strip of land. It features marquee courses such as Ballybunion, Waterville, Tralee and Lahinch alongside the likes of Ballyliffin, Connemara, Dooks and The Old Head.

We were fortunate to play three other courses in this area. The drive on the Atlantic Way to Dingle Golf Links (Ceann Sibeal) is spectacular as you traverse narrow lanes to reach the very tip of the Dingle Peninsula.

The course is equally spectacular as you attempt to define holes hewed out of dunes and long wispy grass. Beaufort is a more traditional inland parkland course with wellmaintained fairways and greens while Killarney Golf and Fishing Club is the epitome of the imposing and traditional championship venue.

Turkish delight CHRIS WILSON INDULGES HIS TASTE FOR LUSCIOUS GRILLED LAMB AT LOKANTA. he chef of my house hates cooking lamb, and apparently if I took a turn at cleaning the oven occasionally I’d know why. It seems nothing leaves stubborn, meaty, fatty stains quite like a delicious roast lamb joint. A small price to pay, but then I would say that, wouldn’t I? Thanks goodness then for the recent rise in popularity of Turkish eateries in Sheffield and particularly for my lovely, friendly, civilised local restaurant…Broomhill’s Lokanta.

Because there is something about those trademark charcoal grills with their raw flames that just bring the best out of a luscious hunk of lamb. Other main courses are available of course, and Lokanta has a full range of fish and vegetarian options, but in my view this is what they do best.

Our latest visit began with a selection of cold and hot meze dishes which were perfect for sharing and for bringing back memories of Mediterranean holidays. Fresh octopus and sun dried tomatoes (£7) cooked in red wine, served cold with sun-dried tomato in an olive oil dressing, was a classic taverna-style snack, delicately flavoured and very healthy. The same claim could not be made for the pastrami and cheese baked parcels (£5.75) or the courgette and feta fritters (£6) but they were packed with gutsy flavours and

incredibly moreish.

Throw in some bread and olives and Lokanta’s addictive own barbecue sauce, not ferociously hot but perfect for spicing things up in a moderate way, and you have an ideal first course.

Another great way to start a Turkish meal (and a good test of a restaurant’s authenticity) is to check if they have ayran (£2), the traditional drink made from yoghurt, water and salt. It can vary wildly from venue to venue but Lokanta’s version, chilled and slightly salty, was gorgeous. The Efes beer (£4.75 for a large bottle) was chilled too, and most refreshing.

For main courses, fillet of lamb on aubergine puree (£15.50) was as tender and juicy as we had hoped, and there was a delicious smokiness to the aubergine that lifted the dish to another level.

Meanwhile for indecisive carnivores, the mixed grill (£17.50) is a perfect get-out. A plate of grilled lamb, chicken, lamb meatballs, Turkish spicy beef sausage and halloumi covered all bases and the accompaniments included another pot of that oh-so-addictive Lokanta barbecue sauce.

The wine list is very reasonable and the Turkish red wine Yakut (£5.25) had enough spice and depth to match such hearty food.

Luxury and practicality Remember the FF, that exotic V12 supercar powertrain embodied under a family friendly, four-seater shooting brake body? Well if so you’ll be pleased to know that Ferrari has updated its design to this, the GTC4 Lusso.

Unlike the normal GTC4 Lusso, which comes equipped with a 680hp 6.3-litre naturally aspirated V12, the GTC4 Lusso T (pictured), wades into battle with the same 3.9-litre turbocharged V8 from the 488 GTB supercar.

While the V8 may not be as powerful as the V12 – 600hp plays 680hp – the V8 has more torque, 561lb ft against 514lb ft, which should make it a more effortless drive. It takes just 3.5 seconds 0-62mph, with a top speed exceeding 199mph.

Unlike the GTC4 Lusso, the T is rear-drive only.

Works in progress MINI’s latest edition of the Clubman has finally been introduced to the John Cooper Works treatment.

Apart from a meaner and overall more aggressive looking exterior package with upgraded suspension, braking, cooling features, the Clubman John Cooper Works edition gets some upgraded running shoes in the form of a 231hp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit. This means the Clubman will hit 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds and go all the way, if needs be, to a max of 148mph.

Power from the potent 2.0-litre motor will be sent to all four wheels via either a sixspeed manual or an eight-speed flappy paddle job.

The Clubman can achieve figures of 41.5mpg on the combined cycle and 154g/km of CO2.

Air conditioning dehumidifies the air blowing onto the screen and will still work even if you turn the temperature up to warm. You will find that by doing this the screen will clear much quicker.
