Roads of plenty THEY’RE TWO OF THE MOST GREEN-SPACED AREAS IN THE CITY BUT HAVE MUCH MORE TO OFFER. LUCY JAMES TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT OAKBROOK ROAD AND FULWOOD ROAD. heffield lies in the foothills of the Pennines in the Peak District and is one of the ‘greenest’ cities in Europe with 60 per cent of it being green space.

Located just three miles west of Sheffield city centre in the suburb of Ranmoor, in the Fulwood ward, sits Britain’s only Oakbrook Road, situated within one of the most green-spaced areas in the whole of the city.

Despite the unique named road being one of the more expensive roads to live on in Sheffield, with an average house price of £300,625 in 2020, The Times named Fulwood and Ranmoor in their list of best places to live in the North and North East after experts travelled the country and toured the areas, judging them on travel, education, air quality and broadband, proving the homes on the road to be worth the extra costs.

Fulwood Road is equally desirable with average house prices of £327,500 achieved last year. The majority of sales were flats, selling for an average price of £239,417. Terraced properties sold for an average of £407,000, with detached

If you are looking for some inspiration of activities to do now that lockdown is gradually lifting, or for some socially distanced activities that get you out of the house, a list of nearby things to do that Oakbrook Road and Fulwood Road have to offer can be read below.

Bingham Park & Whiteley Woods Houses on Oakbrook Road have a stunning view of the green space next door to them - Bingham Park and Whitley Woods, located alongside the Porter Brook River. The park is sat on the top of a hill which gives walkers the perfect view of the surrounding areas, including Ranmoor’s St John’s Church, a grade 2 listed building with a past that holds a tragic story for those who are interested in history.

The park has two recently refurbished tennis courts which can be hired for 55 minuets for just £6, and other courts there have plans to be refurbished into a place to play netball and basketball.

There is a court suitable for use with skateboards and bikes, a bowling green and it even as an AstroTurf area with goal posts to play football making Bingham Park the perfect sport for all kinds of sportspeople.

Joined onto Bingham Park is Whiteley Woods, a lovely place for a picnic, walk, run, or cycle with the path taking you through a woodland and along the Porter Brook river.

Endcliffe Park

Peak District

Just a five-minute walk from Oakbrook Road and Fulwood Road is Endcliffe Park. Here, there is a playground for children, a café, space for sports, ponds and the Porter Brook river runs through creating an idyllic riverside walk.

Every Saturday morning, Endcliffe Park is the base for the Sheffield Park Run, and is also one of the starting points for the Sheffield Round Walk, a 15-mile loop of the city through urban and rural landscapes, passing rivers, parklands and some of the prettiest suburbs in the city.

Twelve minutes away by car is the Peak District’s Redmires Reservoirs. Redmires is home to three reservoirs and has a popular walking route which passes through woodland. This is the best and closest spot for people living on Ranmoor and Fulwood who like wildlife with many people who have visited the area mentioning the numbers of wild birds and waders here.

This walk is one of many free reservoir walks based in the Peak district and made accessible by Yorkshire Water. Only a few more minutes away is more of the peak district’s walks which guarantee you walks that can suit any ability from a gentle stroll to an adventurous scramble.Yorkshire Water has made the free walking routes downloadable on their website.

If you have children, or are planning to start a family, are an avid sportsperson, or just love the outdoors, the suburb is a fantastic place to live, and it is all thanks to its convenient and stunning location.

Bolehills BMX track Shepherd Wheel Museum Set within the picturesque valley of the Porter Brook and next to parks and woodlands is the Shepherd Wheel museum, a fantastic and working example of the Sheffield knife grinding industry, holding some of Sheffield’s steel work history, and contributing to Sheffield’s nickname ‘the steel city’.

Shepherd Wheel makes a great morning or afternoon out of anyone, with it being packed full of history and having a stunning location, even the kids will love it with the water simulation in the museum’s courtyard and plenty of outdoor space to run around in, why not stop by after your walk along the Porter Brook to Whiteley Woods or before you go further afield and continue following the river down to Endcliffe Park.

If you are a bit of an adrenaline junkie, then just a 10 minute drive away in Walkley is Bolehills BMX track. This full-size track has jumps ranging from small and simple all the way up to some trails, this is the perfect spot for practicing your skills or learning something new.

Qualification successes There have been more qualification successes for city homelessness charity Emmaus Sheffield.

Emmaus Sheffield is the drug and alcohol free project that provides a home, support and work for formerly homeless people in the city.

Through its social enterprise programme it aims to provide meaningful work and enable the people it supports – known as companions - to eventually become self-supporting once more.

And Emmaus companions John Nichols and Shaun Turnbull have now qualified to carry out PAT Testing, which means electrical items on sale at the charity’s popular second hand store are properly fit for purpose.

“PAT Testing is a legal requirement and one that has to be carried out by a properly qualified person,” said Emmaus Deputy Manager Charley Fedorenko.

“Training to carry out this service fits in perfectly with the Emmaus philosophy of providing our companions with the new skills they need to make a fresh start and it also means we have greater scope for selling items we might not otherwise be able to accept at the store.

“Many charities will not accept faulty items but with John and Shaun now fully qualified to PAT test items, please do think of us before you throw away unwanted electrical goods because we may be able to get them ready for a new home.”

Bears of Sheffield If you’re going on a bear hunt there’s surely no better place to start than Crystal Peaks.

For intrepid explorers can spot a total of 16 of the forest favourites at the award-winning Sheffield shopping centre as it joins the Children’s Hospital Charity Bears of Sheffield trail.

The Bears of Sheffield is a unique sculpture trail scattered around the city throughout the summer, the biggest mass participation event Sheffield has ever seen.

The 60 large bears who form the heart of the trail have been designed by professional artists and sponsored by companies, businesses and individuals. But there are also 100 little bears decorated by local school, college and nursery pupils.

Crystal Peaks is hosting two of the large bears - designed by artists Caroline Greyling and Edwina Kung - and 14 of the small bears.

The Bears of Sheffield follows the hugely successful Herd of Sheffield four years ago, which brought highly decorated elephants to the city streets and was a huge summer hit, raising more than £610,000.

Anybody taking part in the trail can download a website to their phone and collect the bears electronically. Trail maps are also available for a suggested donation of £1 along with a souvenir guide at £9.99 containing photos of all 60 big and 100 little bears.

Three Peaks Challenge A team of intrepid fundraisers are taking on one of the year’s toughest challenges as they support St Luke’s Hospice.

The Sheffield friends – Josh Beachell, Sam Ashworth, Joe Ashworth, Sam Civil, Ellis Chant, Connor Jubb, Carl Hurst, Ryan Beatson, Callum Burnes, Luke Lomas, Sam Hawksworth and Chris Sharp – are in training for the National Three Peaks Challenge.

In just 24 hours the lads will have to reach the top of the highest peaks in Wales, England and Scotland. They will start with Snowdon in Wales, then go on to England’s Scafell Pike and finish at the top of Ben Nevis in Scotland. And before they even embark on their adventure they have already raised £1,725 for St Luke’s.

“St.Luke’s provides the best standard of care and support for the people and families of those who are battling serious illnesses,” said Sarah Doyle, who is helping with organisation for the challenge.

“Having experienced the work St Luke’s do first hand with some of our loved ones, we are able to say that this is a cause that needs to be shown a massive amount of gratitude and appreciation.”

Elf: The Musical is based on the smash hit Will Ferrell movie about Buddy, a human raised by accident amongst elves at the North Pole, who travels to New York in search of his biological father - with unexpected and hilarious consequences.

The STOS production will be another regional premiere, following on the success of their last show at the Lyceum, Shrek: The Musical.

STOS Theatre Company produces the world’s top musicals at Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre, made for and by the people of South Yorkshire. hen Richard Tims joined the board at Sheffield FC in 2007 his aim was to not only develop the club and brand globally but to find a permanent home for the world’s first football club. Now chairman, Richard looks like delivering on his promise.

Since its inception in 1857, Sheffield FC has led something of a nomadic existence. Its first home was East Bank, so named as it stood on the east bank of the River Sheaf, and the team has also played at Bramall Lane, Newhall, Ecclesall Road and the Old Forge ground in Attercliffe. Owlerton and the Niagara Grounds followed as well as spells at Hillsborough Park and, more recently, Don Valley Stadium.

Since 2001 Sheffield FC, who currently play in the eighth tier Northern Premier League Division One South East, has called the Coach & Horses in Dronfield ‘home’ - but that’s all about to change.

Earlier this year, the club announced that it intends to build a 4,000-capacity stadium, alongside an interactive attraction explaining Sheffield’s role as the birthplace of the beautiful game, at what is currently the Sheffield Transport Sports Club at Meadowhead. It is hoped that the new ground will become a place of pilgrimage, drawing fans of the world’s best-loved sport from around the world.

The club will fund the project by developing the current site in Dronfield for housing; a planning application is with North East Derbyshire District Council and should be finalised later this summer. Once that’s rubber-stamped, and planning for the new stadium has been submitted and approved, Richard believes it could be ready in as little as two years.

He is confident that the proposed heritage centre will help the city better capitalise on its proud sporting history as the place where the rules of the modern game as we know it were developed, having in the past been overshadowed by Manchester, where the National Football Museum is located.

“St Andrews is known around the world as the home of golf, Lord’s is the home of cricket, and we want Sheffield to get the recognition it deserves as the home of football,” Richard said. “This will be somewhere to which the sport’s three billion fans can make a pilgrimage and pay homage to the city which gave the world the beautiful game.

“It doesn’t matter if you support Sheffield United or Sheffield Wednesday, this is about being proud of the region’s

sporting heritage. We need everyone to get behind this and let the world know Sheffield is where football kicked off 164 years ago.”

The roots of association football can be traced back to 1855 when members of a Sheffield cricket club organised informal kick-abouts without any official rules. Subsequently, two members, Nathaniel Creswick and William Prest formed the Sheffield Football Club.

The inaugural meeting of the club took place on 24 October 1857 at Parkfield House in the suburb of Highfield in Sheffield.The original headquarters was a greenhouse on East Bank Road lent to them by Thomas Asline Ward, father of the first club president, Frederick Ward, and the adjacent field was used as their first playing ground. Initially, Sheffield FC games were played among club members and took the format of ‘Married v Singles’ or ‘Professionals v The Rest’.

Creswick and Prest were responsible for drawing up the club’s rules of play, which were decided upon at the club’s AGM on 21 October 1858, and published the following year. They were referred to as the Sheffield Rules, were the first detailed set of rules of football to be published by a football club (as

opposed to a school or university).

At the time, before the formation of the Football Association (FA), many different kinds of football were popular in England. For example, each of the various public schools played football according to their own individual rules, and these varied widely. The Sheffield Rules were later adopted by the Sheffield Football Association when it was formed in 1867.

Sheffield’s near neighbour, Hallam FC was formed in 1860 and in the same year the two clubs first met each other in a local derby which is still contested today.

They became members of The Football Association on 30 November 1863 but continued to use their own set of rules. On 2 January 1865, the club played its first fixture outside Sheffield against Nottingham playing 18-a-side under Nottingham Rules.

By this time the club had decided only to play teams outside Sheffield in order to seek a bigger challenge. On 31 March 1866, Sheffield played a ‘London’ team under FA Rules at Battersea Park. The game, played as an eleven aside, was won

by London by 2 goals and four touches down to nil. However, the matter of Rules being disputed around the country was solved by the adaptation by Sheffield FC of the FA rules in 1878.

The rest, they say, is history.

“When I became chairman, I inherited what was known locally and anecdotally as the oldest football club in the world, but no-one had explored the potential or sought to secure much wider recognition than this,” explains Richard. “So, when I got involved, I wanted us to start getting the message out there, for the wider world to know our story.

“I spoke to a historian at the FA who confirmed in writing that we were the world’s oldest football club still in existence. Our proud claims and the provenance of the club were given the official seal of approval.”

“The development of our club is key to the birth and development of the modern game,” continues Richard. “We brought in elements like crossbars, corner kicks, free kicks, the first floodlit game was held here, the first trophies awarded, the first intercity match. These are all familiar parts of the game that we now take for granted , but they were initiated by us over 160 years ago.

“Going forward, it’s our aim to build on this heritage and create a sustainable football club that retains the values and keeps the history alive while carving out a clear future. Our brand and club are about integrity, respect and community, and a game that’s open to every age,

race, gender and ability.”

Indeed, the new venue will not just house the 4,000-capacity stadium and heritage centre but full training facilities and pitches that can be used by all. It aims to become an integral part of the community.

Complementing the plan for the new stadium, Sheffield FC have recently launched a new website and a new membership scheme, making it even easier to support the club (see panel).

“When I joined the club 20 years ago my immediate concern was to stop it going out of business,” said Richard. “It had never had its own ground, so my next goal was to find us a permanent home. Hopefully we have gone some way to achieving that.

“What we have started to do is to create something that is more than a local football club. It’s what we call a ‘living, breathing antique’.We’ve always been old, but we are also a modern, forward-thinking, progressive football club.We were in the Women’s Super League last year, we have disability teams, Futsal teams, walking football. Coupled with our heritage and values, this is a pretty unique and powerful package and one that we can proudly pass on to future generations of Sheffield FC.” These are certainly exciting times for not just the club, but the city and the wider football community. Sheffield is the home of football, we just need to shout about it a bit more. Sheffield FC are giving voice to that argument and long may it continue.

It is the gemstone favoured for 40th wedding anniversaries and the birthstone for July.

Rubies are red; the colour of passion, whether love or anger, and they have been related to these emotions throughout history. They are very tough and hard and are associated with endurance and indestructability (although they are by no means indestructible!).

The name ruby comes to us from the Latin ‘Ruber’ meaning red. The finest rubies can almost seem to glow from within, a property noticed as far back as Roman times, when they were said to hold an inextinguishable flame, able to melt wax or boil water. Rubies cannot do either of those things, but the glow can be real. It is due to fluorescence: rubies contain traces of chromium that give them their bright red colour and this element causes a red fluorescence when under ultraviolet light. In stones where there is enough concentration of chromium this means that even

ultraviolet wavelengths in sunlight can cause the stone to have a subtle glow.

Not all rubies will fluoresce though because some will contain traces of iron which suppresses this property.

Today, ruby is still one of the most valuable gemstones in the world. The Sunrise Ruby set a record for coloured gemstones when it sold at auction in 2015 for $30million; more than $1million per carat for the 25.59ct stone. Mined in Myanmar (the world’s most famous locality for rubies), the stone is of the finest red colour and has the advantage of a beautifully even cut; unusual in rubies which can often be uneven as cutters seek to produce the best balance of colour from the stone.

Although several large, historical ‘rubies’

in Royal collections have been found to be spinel (another beautiful red gemstone frequently confused with ruby prior to the development of gemmological testing and famously present in the British crown jewels under the name of the ‘Black Prince’s ruby’) there are still stunning ruby pieces in the jewellery collections of royals including the British, Portuguese and Danish royal families.

However, you don’t need to be royalty to enjoy this beautiful gem. our first open water swim can be a real shock to the system.You may be dressed to the nines and have mentally prepared yourself for what you are about to undertake but when you take those first steps into a seemingly infinite expanse of ice cold water, your breath will literally be taken away.

So why do people do it?

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a noticeable surge in the popularity of open water swimming with the lockdowns leading to many people across the UK participating in the sport, largely because swimming pools had been closed.

A report published by Outdoor Swimmer in January, showed that 45 per cent of swimmers increased their amount of time swimming outdoors in 2020 alone, with 20 per cent of those starting the sport to improve their mental health and general wellbeing, and when the pools reopened, only two per cent of swimmers stopped open water swimming and went back into the indoor pools.

Open water swimming has an abundance of health benefits, so it is no wonder why so many people have taken to their local waters, especially at this very difficult time. From getting fit to trying something new or getting closer to nature, people all over

the country are taking the leap into the cold and it seems like the sport is only becoming more popular.

Mark Kleanthous is an open water swimming coach working with all ages across the country.

With 39 years of open water swimming experience, he said he began open water swimming after having a fear of water as a child.

“I could not swim at school, I learnt to swim to complete a triathlon… I have competed in 525 triathlons in 39 consecutive years!” he proudly told me in an interview.

“My first experience was petrifying; the cold water took my breath away; I thought I was going to die; then I soon realised I had survived the scary moment and started with a form of breaststroke which I did not know I could do, having never done breaststroke before.”

Mark noticed the health benefits of open water swimming early on in his career.

“Swimming in nature is my me time and my escape, not being bombarded by the internet and the frenetic fast pace of life and the instant demands the world now expects of each and everyone. I consider myself a positive person but when life gets in the way, when you feel you are on life’s treadmill that is going too fast, open water

swimming simply is being back with nature and is a reality check and slows down my speedy, busy mind… it’s my moving mediation,” he explains.

“I like to vary my breathing pattern whilst swimming, slow and controlled in and out of mouth, or in and out of my nose.

It certainly helps with my quality of sleep.”

Not only is it relaxing and good for the mind, but Mark also feels proud of himself after a swim, saying he enjoys “the sound of my hands splashing and the sense of achievement as I glide through the water, passing by bushes and trees and looking back to see how far I have travelled.”

Throughout Mark’s time as a swimming coach, he has come face to face with a wide range of wildlife from fish and seals to minks and warns swimmers to respect that they are swimming in their habitats.

“I’ve been chased by an adult mink after its young followed me when swimming in a canal and another time, my body was covered with neoprene and the only part of me exposed to the cold water was my feet, imagine my shock when a crayfish started snapping on my toes – the only piece of my skin exposed!” he laughed.

Swimming safely With a life dedicated to open water swimming, Mark has shared some of his advice to those wanting to start the sport. “Your first introduction to open water swimming should be with an open water swim coach, or an experienced open water swimmer,” he said .”Learn how to relax your breathing before getting out of your depth, then learn to float on your back. Inexperienced swimmers shouldn’t swim in open water with low energy levels or when they’re under a lot of stress as the cold water can heighten anxiety and create more stress rather than reduce it.”

To stay safe, open water swimmers suggest that those looking to begin the sport, seek local swimming groups; Sheffield has three main groups which cover outdoor swimming:Yorkshire Outdoor Swimmers, Sheffield Triathlon Club and Sheffield Outdoor Plungers.

Where to swim With Sheffield often being referred to as the ‘Outdoor City’, Sheffielders in particular have proven to be very lucky with the vast range of open water swimming options available for them.

With many options being just minutes away by car, and easily accessed by public transport, here are three of the best outdoor swimming spots that are just a stone’s splash away from your doorstep.

Upper Derwent Valley’s Slippery Stones Situated in the idyllic Peak District, in the Upper Derwent Valley is the popular, and natural swimming spot, Slippery Stones.

The natural pool is large enough for a paddle, float or a swim, and in the deepest area, it is deep enough to jump in from the rocks surrounding the water but be sure to check for danger before you jump!

Although the area which is deep enough for swimming is smaller

compared to the likes of the Harthill Reservoir, and overcrowding is inevitable in the summer months, the beautiful views surrounding the spot makes Slippery Stones a must go place to swim.

As well as the stunning location, the spot holds some of the most astounding examples of British history, with there being numerous examples of engineering from the 20th century; Slippery Stones is not only a place for a swim, but great for a day out.

Rother Valley Country Park Next on the list is the lake at Rother Valley Country Park. Situated on the outskirts of Sheffield and close to Rotherham sits the country park which attracts hundreds of people every day.

The lake is one of largest open water swimming areas in Sheffield that is safe, however for safety and insurance reasons, to swim here you need to have either a full time triathlon club membership, or a summer swim membership with Sheffield Triathlon Club.

Harthill Reservoir Located on the outskirts of the city and close to Rotherham, Harthill Reservoir is both, a local and safe place to swim.

The site is even the home to the Yorkshire Outdoor Swimmers club which allows swimmers from the age of nine years old, to swim safely, and all year round.

As well as going for a swim, Harthill reservoir’s location offers a walk around the two lakes, and the countryside surrounding the area which offers a beautiful woodland and an abundance of wildlife for those wanting to get that step closer to nature. *** With such a diverse range of swimming locations in Sheffield, there is something for everyone, but before diving in, be sure to read up on open water swimming beforehand to make your open water swimming experiences safe ones.

Theatre Talent 30 June - 24 July Crucible www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Marking a welcome return to theatres is a new Sheffield Theatres production – Talent was written by Victoria Wood and tells tells the story of a young woman with dreams of showbiz glory.

Originally scheduled for the summer of 2020, Talent stars Richard Cant, Daniel Crossley, Jamie-Rose Monk, Jonathon Ojinnaka, James Quinn and Lucie Shorthouse.

Directing the production is Paul Foster, whose most recent credits with Sheffield Theatres include Kiss Me, Kate and Annie Get Your Gun. Talent was written

The Rifles: Unplugged 15 July Leadmill www.leadmill.co.uk British indie outfit the Rifles rose to popularity in the mid-2000s with a jaunty garage rock & roll sound that’s equal parts Jam-like swagger and a playfulness not unlike contemporaries the Kooks.

Worth the wait RESTAURANT VISITS ARE BACK ON THE MENU. AND THERE’S NO BETTER PLACE TO START THAN AT CASA HOTEL, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. t was so nice to be out. After months of being cooped up, it was just lovely to be sat inside a restaurant enjoying a delicious meal and a chilled glass of wine. It was the most normal I’d felt in, well, I can’t quite remember.

And the venue for our ‘outing’ couldn’t have been better. The two rosette award winning Cocina Restaurant, on the first floor of the Casa Hotel, is a stylish space with a bar at its entrance which gives a way to a huge Lshaped dining room with panoramic windows. The open kitchen is a hive of activity and the plentiful staff were eager to please and charming throughout the evening.

businessman behind Global Brands, the drinks company who brought us VK, Bacardi Breezers and Amigos. His father, originally from Barcelona, went on to become a restaurateur and put down roots in Derbyshire.

Papá’s influence is clear to see, from the Mediterranean-inspired dishes cooked on the Barcelona-made, coalfuelled Josper oven in the kitchen, to the Spanish bull ornaments on the shelves of the dining area. But the ingredients themselves are locally-sourced, thanks to Steve’s own farm, Walton Lodge. At the top of the menu is a brief paragraph telling us about the farm where all Cocina’s meat is organically sourced.

More restaurants should be this up-front about sourcing their produce.

It’s an impressive enough building but

this is not a place to go to for the views.

If searching out new sources of culinary excellence is on your radar however the good news is it couldn’t be easier to find.

At the restaurant entrance is one of those Salvador Dali-inspired melting grandfather clocks, the first indication that they aren’t afraid to do things a little differently here.

The menu has a good selection of tapas options, which can also be eaten as starters, as well as grill dishes, main courses and ‘Cocina comforts’, which included burgers, fish and chips, pasta and curry.

The bread is home-made and delicious, the wine list has plainly been assembled with some care and includes an excellent selection available by the glass, and the

coffee has clearly been made by a barista who knows their stuff.

A lemon gin cocktail (£9) provided the perfect aperitif for my companion whilst I indulged in a glass of the house white, a Borsao Blanco Macabeo (£5.80), which had notes of peach, lemon and fennel.

To start we chose from the tapas menu, opting for dishes of sauteed garlic and chilli king prawns (£5.50) and panseared scallops (£8) and very good they were too. The juicy prawns had just the right amount of heat whilst the scallops, served with pineapple and chilli glazed belly pork, toasted coconut and a wasabi cracker, was refined and equally delicious.

For mains I couldn’t resist putting the Josper grill to the test and the tuna steak

(£25), served with a chimchurri sauce and a side of sauteed green beans and shallots, was divine. It was cooked just how I like it; seared on the outside and deliciously rare on the inside with its fresh flavour well complemented by the parsley, oregano, garlic, olive oil, vinegar, and red pepper sauce.

My wife chose the Walton Lodge rump of lamb (£19), which was served pink and accompanied by dauphinoise potato, buttered asparagus, spinach and wild garlic puree and a very more-ish lamb sauce. It was the perfect spring/summer dish; the meat was cooked just right while the accompaniments provided plenty of flavour and interest.

Welcome return CRISIS? WHAT CRISIS? NONNAS IS BACK – AND STILL BUZZING, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. aving been allowed to re-open inside from May, the biggest challenge facing many pubs, bars and restaurants has been encouraging customers to step back through their doors.

For months, the idea of sitting in a restaurant and enjoying a meal seemed to be nothing more than a pipe dream and after getting used to cooking and eating at home, maybe with the odd takeaway or delivery thrown in for good measure, now it’s more a question of will people eat out rather than can they?

There seems to be no such crisis of confidence for Nonnas’ customers whom looked happy and comfortable in their surroundings on a surprisingly busy Monday night. It may look a little different – there are less tables to conform with social distancing measures – but it still felt like the Nonnas we know and love.

The restaurant is an Ecclesall Road institution and has been since it opened in 1996. Proprietor Maurizio Mori puts its success down to a mixture of tradition, innovation and consistent quality of service. He said: “We have always strived to do something different and serve traditional Tuscan flavours with a Nonnas twist. It’s something our customers truly appreciate and our chefs are always looking for new and innovative ideas. We are lucky to have a truly fantastic team of staff and a fantastic manager in the shape of Stefano Buralli.”

Indeed, it was a masked Stefano who greeted us on arrival and showed us to our table. Other staff members were also masked and hand sanitiser was available to use on the way in and out. With less tables the restaurant looked much bigger but felt ‘safe’, if that’s the right word; all staff and diners seemed to be respectful of social distancing measures where possible and it seemed to have that same restaurant buzz.

Nonnas is only operating an a la carte menu at present – there are no pasta offers or chef ’s specials – but it had a familiar feel to it, namely good quality

A glass of cold Menabrea beer (£5.25, pint), for me, and a glass of cabernet sauvignon Mezzacoraona (£9.95, 250ml), for her, quickly got us in the mood. We’d brought the whole family so started with focaccia all’aglio (£4.95), fritto misto (£8) and, recommended by Stefano, asparagi fritti (£7.95). My two children, relishing the change in scenery, wolfed the mozzarella and tomatotopped toasted focaccia strips down with particular praise given to the ‘stringiness’ of the cheese.

The excellent tempura battered seafood, which consisted of cod, prawns and squid, in my wife’s fritto misto was quickly mopped up with the accompanying lemon mayo.

I’m taking bragging rights, though, as my asparagus – also tempura batterered – was the star of the show. Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside it was

deliciously moreish and well complemented by the accompanying onion pureé, crispy shallots, micro sorrel and harissa.

My daughter and I both chose pasta for main course – rigatoni for her (£7.50), tagliatelle for me (£13.50). All pasta at Nonnas is homemade using only eggs and flour and, on this occasion, both examples were top drawer. Served with their well known and much-loved ragu of eight-hour slow cooked Italian sausage, tomato, bay leaf and chilli I could have eaten more and more. The chilli gave it a real kick too. For me, too many restaurants overcomplicate their pasta dishes but Nonnas have got it just right – simple and delicious.

newly arrived from Milan, to its offering, paired with Café New York coffee imported direct from Montecatini. A single espresso was the perfect example and a fitting end to a delicious meal.

Any fears we had previously held about eating out had quickly vanished over the space of a couple of hours.

Nonnas was safe, busy and, more importantly, still some of the best Italian food you’ll find this side of the English Channel.

Sectoral differences The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has released new figures showing that over two-thirds (66 per cent) of businesses surveyed were offering remote working to employees.

The data, from a survey of over 900 businesses conducted in April 2021, also shows nearly three quarters of businesses expect to have at least one employee working remotely over the coming year, with the average expectation among those firms being just over half of their employees working remotely.

There were some major sectoral differences in the results – 80% of B2B services firms (such as finance and law) were able to offer working from home, while only 61% of manufacturers and 54% of B2C services companies (such as hospitality and retail) offered this. For manufacturers and B2C service firms 21% were not able to offer any of the flexible working options proposed, in comparison to only 7% of B2B service businesses.

Award-winning Sheffield company CODA Studios is emerging from lockdown with a record order book.

The multidisciplinary practice which is based in Sheffield’s Kelham Island and Manchester and includes CODA Architecture and CODA Bespoke, underwent a management buyout just before the Covid-19 pandemic took hold.

Matt Bowker, Abel Hinchliffe and Jamie Hanson now lead the firm after acquiring the remaining shares from founding partner David Cross.

After maintaining a full range of services for clients throughout lockdown, CODA is enjoying record orders and a period of expansion across all areas of the company.

“This is a building that has the potential to become a major city centre landmark and one that will help to shape its future, a groundbreaking project that we are proud to be developing.”

Another important project for the CODA team is the new Olive Lane ‘Heart of the Community’ scheme at Rotherham’s Waverley development on behalf of Harworth.

“There has been so much speculation in recent months about the decline of the retail and commercial sectors but the projects we are working on very much prove that is not the case and that despite all the challenges of the pandemic there is as much need as ever for innovative design,” said Matt.

“Attitudes towards property may be changing but good design is all about acknowledging and adapting to those changes.

“As a result, we firmly believe that the year ahead will see even more expansion as we work on a raft of new projects.”

Sheffield specialist creative SEO agency Rise at Seven will be taking to the streets to mark the start of their partnership with South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout.

The company are planning to kick off their year of fundraising for Roundabout by hosting their own sleep out on the streets outside Rise at Seven’s office in St Paul’s Square, Sheffield. That event will mark the launch of a whole range of partnership activity for the charity and the young people it supports.

“We’re taking on Roundabout as a client, treating them the same as we would treat clients like ODEON, Pretty Little Thing, Playstation or Parkdean Resorts,” said Rise at Seven co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Stephen Kenwright.

“We’re going to commit to delivering £120,000 of digital marketing work and advice for them over the next year, without any charge to Roundabout.”

At the same time, the company will also be offering important training opportunities to young people supported

“We’re offering several placements of six months at a time, paid at the real living wage, to the young people Roundabout is working with,” Stephen explained. “There will also be opportunities to extend the arrangement and even for those placements to become permanent in some instances “Along with that, we’re running an interview process open only to people applying via Roundabout, where we’ll give advice on CVs and applications helping to build their skills and confidence for future applications.

“We are a young company, helping young people to realise their potential and that is what Roundabout does too so it feels to us that this is the perfect working partnership.”

Steve said: “The hospice allowed Julie to spend her final moments in peace. The last thing I wanted for her was to have an unpleasant death; she’d suffered enough already. Ashgate gave her a very calming and peaceful end to her life and I’m enormously grateful for this.”

Electric dreams THE NATURE OF MOTORING IS MOVING UP A GEAR – ERIC STEAD MG IS ALREADY OFFERING A GLIMPSE OF THE FUTURE. magine, just for a few minutes, that your time machine has propelled you from the late 1980s to the present day.

First things first, you’d best call home to let them know you’ll be late for tea by about 35 years. Problem is, you can’t see a red phone box anywhere.

Instead, everybody carries around a small device that will fit in the palm of your hand. But, thanks to something called the internet, it can be used for everything from ordering your shopping (for delivery to your door, of course) to finding the best place near you for a course of Swahili lessons. And even for buying a car.

It just so happens that here in 2021 we are about to see the biggest revolution in transport since the invention of the

internal combustion engine.

In nine years from now, electric cars will be the only story in town – because all cars will have to be made that way.

The manufacturers have not been slow to react. All the big names in the business are gearing up for the day of reckoning and some already have models on the market.

But, much as we all want to save the planet, what of the traditional weaknesses of electric cars?

Early attempts at using clean power concluded that the concept was a long way from winning recognition as a practical alternative to the typical family car.

Performance was an issue. That was then, but now even Ferrari have launched a hybrid model, and word from

the prancing horses’s mouth has it that an all-electric version will not be long in coming.

But above all, the big concern among potential buyers was range. Longer journeys had to be planned carefully to ensure the vital – but scarce – charging points.

Things have certainly changed on that front, according to our man in the know, Simon Stead of MG dealers Eric Stead Sheffield.

Take their SUV, the MG ZS EV, for example. With a 163-mile range, it has enough in the ‘tank’ to reach central London from Sheffield. Or it takes only 40 minutes at the motorway services to charge up. Or if you’re in the market for an estate car, the MG5 EV delivers a whopping 214-mille range.

“When you look at the relative running costs between a conventional and an electric car, the electric car will cost about £40 [per month] to run. This compares to £140 for the petrol engine,” says Simon.

He points out that servicing costs are dramatically reduced. Throw in the zero car tax and the proposition looks very different.

Driving one of these cars for the first time takes a little getting used to. For a start there is no engine noise, Only a faint whoosh as you glide along the road surface.

How many speeds does the gearbox have? Answer, one of course. There are no gear changes, just the steady hum of the motor, which in turn makes for a very smooth ride. There are no sudden lurches as you change up or down, just consistent forward propulsion that seems effortless and, dare I say it, easy.

Performance? Well that’s pretty

impressive too. Both models have plenty of poke, in particular the MG5 EV, which is not by any means embarrassed by conventional cars.You could really feel the extra power provided by the larger capacity battery which made for a much more engaging driving experience.

Reversing is made easier with a rear parking camera and sensors.

Apart from the motor, there is loads of state-of-the-art technology in each of the cars such as regenerative brakes and a collision avoidance system which brakes automatically if you get too close to the car in front. The dashboard and central console is unfussy with everything in easy reach and, more importantly, straightforward to use. Satellite navigation is included and there’s DAB radio as well as compatibility with both Apple and Android mobile devices.
