Humpback whales at Hervery Bay

A whale of a time ADAM KAY HEADS DOWN UNDER IN SEARCH OF QUEENSLAND’S MOST AMAZING SIGHTS – AND SOME OF ITS BIGGEST VISITORS… t’s the source of countless jokes and internet memes. ‘Australia: where everything wants to kill you.’ The apparent deadliness of the land down under has become such a cliché that we’re more likely to shrug it off than pay it proper attention. So it felt as if the universe was trying to prove a point when, on my first full day in the country, I was stung by a poisonous jellyfish. I’m fine, obviously – this article hasn’t been dictated via ouija board from beyond the grave – although I do feel a bit daft for not taking those ‘jokes’ more seriously. At the moment I was stung by that jellyfish, however, I was snorkelling off the coast of a private island on the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Golden sunlight poured down on me from above, falling to the ocean floor in bright straight beams, illuminating a kaleidoscope of coral and ocean wildlife. On

balance, I think it was worth the risk. Australia is a land of diverse charm and beauty – and nowhere is this more evident than in Queensland, the country’s secondlargest state. Our trip took in bustling Brisbane, the state capital; the Capricorn Coast, named after the Tropic of Capricorn and with the climate to match; the Bundaberg region with its quaint coastal resorts; and the natural wonders of the Fraser Coast. Each was full of highlights, varied and plentiful – but some things were common to them all. Firstly: good ol’ Aussie hospitality. Wherever we went, we were greeted by beaming smiles and laidback attitudes. (The clichés are true; Aussies really do say “No worries” a lot.) This was the case in busy cities as well as quiet seaside towns: throughout Brisbane, from the Gallery of Modern Art to the South Bank Parklands (both highly recommended), we met strangers who made us feel like old friends.

Second: the weather. Queensland does experience occasional heavy rainfall (more about that later), but for the most part it’s blue skies and high temperatures all year round. In Yeppoon, the sunrises and sunsets made the endless beach glow purple and pink. Our coach driver, a local, told us he’d never seen snow. Reader, I envied him. Thirdly, the food. Aussies love their tucker. Queensland is big on local produce: macadamia nuts, native to the region, feature on every menu; in the town of Bundaberg, famed for its sugar mills and rum distillery, the air smells of thick molasses. The local delicacy of the Brisbane region is the Moreton Bay bug, a type of lobster. The delicate flavour of its sweet, white flesh is in no way diminished by the fact that it looks like the thing that burst out of John Hurt’s chest in Alien. That bug is ugly, yes, but at least it isn’t

dangerous. It might not be true that everything in Australia wants to kill you, but most things certainly could. Even the fluffiest creatures can be a threat: on one coach journey, we passed a family of kangaroos sunbathing by the roadside – a common sight, our driver said. Very cute – but one swift kick from their hind legs and you’d be pushing up the daisies faster than you could say “Strewth!” The deadliest of all Queensland’s inhabitants, at least in theory, is the humpback whale. Up to 52ft in length with an average weight of 36,000kg, these marine mammals could squish a human without even realising it. But humpbacks are gentle giants, prone to playful displays and hugely popular with tourists. Hervey Bay touts itself as ‘the whalewatching capital of the world’ – unique amongst similar sites around the globe because whales use it as a stopping-off point, rather than somewhere they simply pass through. Expert locals operate boat trips which take visitors right alongside the whales as they play, slapping their enormous fins and leaping dramatically from the waves. There’s currently an application in progress for Hervey Bay to become an internationallyrecognised ‘Whale Heritage Site’. Here’s hoping it gets approved, because this is a

orange-and-white clownfish, and followed a ray as it glided effortlessly along the seabed. A green sea turtle passed right in front of me, close enough to touch, on its way to the surface for air. I was in undersea heaven. Unspoiled beauty abounds in Queensland. On Fraser Island, a short ferry ride out from Hervey Bay and the largest sand island in the world, the sheer number of natural wonders is overwhelming. Our drive (a guided tour by four-wheel drive; ‘normal’ cars aren’t permitted) took in Lake McKenzie, with its white silica beach; Eli Creek, warm and shallow enough to wade along; 75-Mile Beach (bet you can’t guess why it’s called that); and the coloured cliffs at the Pinnacles. Central Station, a forest filled with lush ferns and trees that stretch to the sky, is positively Jurassic. If a T-Rex had wandered into view, I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid. And what of the place I was describing earlier, where I got stung by the poisonous jellyfish? That’s Pumpkin Island, off the coast of Keppel Bay, and though I’d hesitate to call anywhere ‘paradise’, this comes mighty close. Owner Wayne Rumble was gifted the island by his father for his 27th birthday. (I got some boxer shorts for mine, so it’s one-nil to Wayne on that.) He and his wife Laureth live there, on this tranquil dot in the South Pacific, and the public can share a taste of

But spend an afternoon snorkelling beside it, over it, through it, and you realise why it really is one of nature’s true miracles. The waters around Lady Musgrave Island are a particularly beautiful part of the reef. The route out to the island is notoriously choppy, and our boat ride came the day after the area’s worst storm in years. Put it this way: next time I’ll take a helicopter. But the remarkable sights made every wretch and heave worthwhile. I saw coral of every type and hue. I watched shoals of

their charmed life through the island’s seven holiday cottages. We spent a lazy afternoon sunbathing and paddle-boarding (I only fell in once), watched the sun go down over cocktails at the beach bar, then cooked a barbecue late into the night. The next morning, after a walk round the island (we dawdled and took an hour; you could easily do it in ten minutes), Laureth gave us an impromptu yoga lesson, peaceful and silent but for the waves lapping gently at the shoreline. Suffice to say, I would let a thousand jellyfish sting me for a thousand days to spend one more hour on Pumpkin Island. And the same applies for Queensland – the glistening jewel in Australia’s crown.

HANNAH SANDERS MEETS THREE COUPLES WHO GAVE THEIR LOVE A HELPING HAND… veryone’s a sucker for a romantic gesture, and with Valentine’s Day approaching the pressure is on to show your significant other that the dull routine of daily life has not put out the fires of passion. A card from the local paper shop and flowers from the garage forecourt simply won’t cut it. Of course, if money is no object you can go over-the-top with a grand gesture that is simply impossible to ignore. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were two of the biggest film stars of their era and in 1969 Burton paid $1m to buy her a 68 carat diamond. Pretty impressive, but even this stunning declaration of love was no guarantee of longevity. Two marriages and two divorces later she sold the sparkler for $5m and donated the cash to charity. Edward VIII became King of England in 1936. But by December of that year, deeply in love with a married American woman named Wallis Simpson, he was forced to choose between her or his throne. He chose her. She divorced her husband and they were married the next year. Was this the ultimate romantic sacrifice or the selfish pursuit of pleasure? The jury’s still out on that one. Meanwhile, closer to home, we asked readers about romantic gestures that made an impact on their partner. A graduation with a big surprise… Sarah Walker was in for an surprise when her husband Matthew proposed during university graduation. Matt had the ring for months before but just didn’t know the right time to ask. Lying in bed the night before Matt said he just thought, “why not?” It was a perfect opportunity as everyone that was important to them would be there. Throughout the ceremony he was nervous and impatient to get outside. Then, it was the question of when was the right time, but thankfully when everyone came together for a picture, he got down on one knee and popped the question. Sarah burst into tears and said yes, and the moment was even captured on Radio Sheffield. Now married, the couple are expecting their first child this year. For Sarah and Matt, romantic gestures are a big part of their relationship as it is a way of showing their affection towards one another.

How to start the New Year with style Over the New Year, George and Laura took the next big step in their relationship and got engaged, for which George really pulled out all the stops. On New Year’s Day, George managed to get Laura out of the house so he could set up his proposal. Armed with string and sticky tape, George created a ‘washing line’ through their flat full of pictures, memories and notes of their time together. At the end of the string there was a book filled with reasons he wanted to marry her, as well as a note saying “read me and come into the other room”. When she went in he had their favourite song playing- “I knew I loved you” by Savage Garden with a light box reading “can this be forever?” He got down on one knee, popped the question and she said yes. Talking to George about why he felt it was the right time, he said; “I knew I wanted her for the rest of my life, so there was no point in waiting any longer.” January 1 also has some special meaning to George and his family as it would have been his Nan’s 80th birthday and he felt that it would become a day filled with happiness and would always hold a special meaning The one thing George regrets about the day was his outfit choice. He wore a ‘suit you would wear for a skype interview’ and it really wasn’t him. George went for well- worn jeans on the bottom with a ‘dad’ shirt, tie and blazer on the top. He said; “It felt right at the time to try and be a bit formal but afterwards I just felt silly… although at the time it did make her smile.”

A sweet love story on a very tight budget Shauna Naylor and her husband Dan, have been together for nearly 11 years now and their relationship started off with some of the sweetest gestures. On February 14 when they had little money and were living in a run-down room that didn’t even have wallpaper, Dan painted ‘Chez Danny’ onto the wall and hung fairy lights from the rafters, transforming a dingy dwelling into a beautiful bistro and served her a Valentine’s meal. There was a rickety old table with just a single flower in a glass while, playing in the background were Latin love songs. Shauna said that it “made her fall head over heels for him again”. The loved-up couple even have a special number- 433. This stemmed from listening to a record by a minimalist composer, Steve Reich, including a track that is four minutes and thirty-three seconds of just silence and whenever it came on instead of skipping it, they took that time to just be together. Shauna says every time they see those numbers now, they show their love for each other. We won’t pry… some things are best kept private. For Shauna and Dan it is the little things you do that show love. They feel that romantic gestures are a way of keeping that special bond alive.

dread to think where I would be now if I had not started the Alevere programme when I did. I was deteriorating fast as a person.” James Jayawardena’s weight loss difficulties started in April 2016 when his GP diagnosed him with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and pre-diabetes. “Something had to give as my weight had really started to creep up over the last few years, and, at 22-and-a-half stone, I was starting to become increasingly aware that if I did not do anything about it I was exposing myself to potentially irreversible and serious health implications.” James was worried that his demanding lifestyle would mean it was impossible for him to lose weight, however, as soon as he started on the Alevere programme he was convinced that the team at G&M Healthcare could help him. “My initial concerns were about being hungry, as I ate quite large portions and would often graze during the day. In fact, the pleasure of eating something ‘unhealthy’ is better when it becomes an occasional treat, rather than a regular and ignored part of your diet.” After three months on the programme James had lost almost seven stone, and was starting to feel much more confident again, and has since continued his weight-loss journey. “I was losing 3kg every week, so it was great to get on the scales and realise how much I had lost overall – and that made me want to carry on. I liked the routine of the programme and the big weekly weight loss was a great motivation, I became very focused. “With good planning and listening the

programme is adaptable, I wouldn’t say it was easy, it took willpower, but I didn’t feel hungry and my energy levels were noticeably higher to myself and others. “Alevere isn’t a diet, because it changes your philosophy completely. It teaches you to eat normal but healthy food, and retrains you on how you should eat. “The programme is now part of my daily life without me being obsessed with it and by what I can and can’t be eating. I have changed how I eat for good – I eat regularly and I still have what I want, but I don’t snack all the time.” James has discovered a whole new way of life, and, though he knows there is no magic wand to losing weight, he has seen that with help and support it is achievable. “Alevere has totally changed my life. People always comment that I am now a completely different person and approach things in a different way. “Grace, Sarah and all the staff, therapists and nutritionists are extremely knowledgeable and there’s always as line of communication and support available and you feel like part of a little community. “I firmly believe in Alevere and want others to see how it has worked for me. If I had one regret it would be that I did not start the programme sooner.”

The plan has taught me to think about what I am putting into my body.” Like everyone, Kerry has hit the occasional rut but she says she tries to combat it by switching up her workout routine. "My weight is no longer ruling my life. Before, I let the weight define me and my boundaries. Now, I don't. I make the rules. "I've learned to be patient about the rest of the weight loss," and she reminds others to do the same. "Instead of always being down on yourself for how much more you have to go, look back at all you've already done." Kerry is such a convert to the goals and outcomes of the programme that she has now joined G & M Healthcare as a weight loss therapist, helping to motivate others along their weight loss journeys. “All the staff at the clinic were very caring and professional and I wanted to give something back to the programme. It has really helped me and I’m so grateful. “It’s great to see others achieving their goals.”

Next up, the Tour de Yorkshire – a legacy event following on from the success of the Tour visit. A race that was an instant hit with the riders, albeit one of the hardest races on their calendar

due to the terrain. The race gets bigger and better each year and I am so excited about this year’s edition, not least because the final stage finished right outside Full Gas Bikes’ front door! “And to cap it all, the 2019 World Road Championships have just been awarded to Yorkshire! A week-long festival of races, which will visit every part of the county! “Being a southerner (sorry!), all I can say is that the scenery and cycling here is simply breathtaking. “Yes, it’s hard, yes, its hilly – but it is so worth it once you get to the top and see all the amazing views. There are so many great events to ride and all of the above races have support rides for everyone from families with kids, through to the serious sportive rider wanting to test themselves over the same terrain as the professional riders. “So, what are you waiting for? Get the bike out, fill your lungs with some fresh Yorkshire air and take in the stunning views. I know from experience, it’s well worth it.”

Seafood special HANNAH SANDERS IS TRANSPORTED TO SUNNY SPAIN BY A SUPERB PLATE OF THE MEDITERANNEAN’S PAELLA. tepping off the icy cold street, I was transported to a beach side restaurant in Spain; with a glass of rosé in my hands, a delightfully friendly waiter close by, and the relaxing sound of the Gypsy Kings, I could almost feel the sun on my face. This is the magical, transformative effect of The Mediterranean on Sharrow Vale Road in Sheffield, which opened in 1979 and has been a standard bearer for lovers of seafood ever since. It has changed hands over the years, but the style and décor remain comfortably familiar. Simple white walls, surrounded by blue cushions and chairs and stained glass lanterns has served them well. Rachid El Afif, who has been a chef for many years, became the owner three years ago and wisely opted against wholesale changes, staying true to a popular formula. The fish and shellfish is delivered fresh every day and, while other seafood restaurants have struggled to find a foothold in Sheffield – even national chain Loch Fyne failed – The Mediterranean has never fallen out of fashion.

To start with, I had the lobster avocado salad (£9.50) which was an array of vivid colours and full of mouth-watering flavours, while my partner got his hands messy with the juicy king prawns (£7.95), which were covered in a zingy lemon sauce. For mains I chose the seafood paella (£16.95). The chefs didn’t miss the mark when it came to the paella, which came bursting full of seafood, including mussels, king prawns and small cubes of chorizo, it left my mouth tingling with flavour down to the final bite. My glass of Rosé Blush (£4.50) with its undertones of gooseberry and raspberry complemented the dish. There are always alternatives for those who don’t want to stick to the seafood route, and my partner had the braised lamb shanks (£17.50). The lamb was cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth. It was covered with a thick, tomato concassee sauce with hints of rosemary and garlic, and served with a generous portion of seasonal vegetables. These dishes couldn’t have been more different, yet they were both impressive in taste and presentation.

Homemade desserts proved impossible to resist. I went for the pecan pie (£5.95), presented on a slate slab. The pie was stuffed with pecans covered in a sweet, gooey sauce with a mango foam on the side. My partner went for the chocolate parfait (£5.95) and it did not disappoint, with its sweet taste it leaving him wanting more. A question of taste THE WELCOME MAYBE ALL WARM AND COSY BUT HOW DOES THE FOOD MEASURE UP AT THIS POPULAR THAI RESTAURANT? BY CHRIS WILSON. 016 was the year of Hygge, the Danish word used to sum up all things cosy, from light fittings and soft furnishings to comfort food and candles. But you don’t need to come from the dark and dour outposts of Northern Europe to understand the importance of making your surroundings warm and welcoming. It has been just one of the factors behind the success over the last few years of AllSiam, a treasure of a Thai restaurant on Ecclesall Road. It only takes a casual stroll past the front window to be assured that someone here cares deeply about first impressions – those displays of fresh flowers are always eye-catchingly beautiful and immaculate, any day of the week. Step inside and all is calm. While many Thai restaurants go for grand display, with Buddha statues and rickshaws at every turn and staff in brightly coloured national costume, the mood at All-Siam is distinctly low-key. Streamlined wooden flooring and white tablecloths create a clean, serene feel with candles and low lights to complete the gentle picture. Waitresses in chic black dresses are unobtrusive but very friendly. So it’s all down to the food, served on chic patterned blue and white china, to provide the fireworks, and this is where All-Siam truly delivers.

Thai menus tend to be so busy it can be bewildering, but rather than get lost in the sheer number of dishes on offer we began with Pearls of All-Siam (£15), a sharing dish offering up endless variety and beautifully presented, to get the ball rolling. This mixed starter includes chicken on toast, seasoned pork balls wrapped in vermicelli, prawns on a bed of orange slices drizzled in Thai sauce and sprinkled with roasted coconut, and golden baskets filled with seasoned chicken and vegetables. With sweet chilli and plum dips this was a lovely contrast of taste and texture. Where Thai food really excels for me is the use of fresh herbs, spices and chillies to create clean, distinctive flavours and this is perfectly illustrated with the soups. All-Siam’s Tom Yum Goong (£6.50) is a classic spicy, hot and sour soup with prawns, mushrooms, lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves and an extra splash of lime juice. If you can stand a little heat (this dish comes with a deserved three-chilli rating on the menu) it’s zingy and delicious. Thai food is ideal for sharing and we selected three contrasting dishes for a richly varied and satisfying main course. Gaeng phed ped yang (£9.25) was duck in red curry with coconut milk, pineapple, lychee, tomatoes and sweet basil leaves, a familiar favourite that did not disappoint.

With so much choice I always try to sample at least one new dish when I visit a Thai restaurant. This time it was Pud pak fai daeng (£4.95) a moreish dish of stir-fried spinach with chilli, fermented soya beans and garlic, topped with tender pork in a crispy batter. A generous dish of Pud Thai (£6.50), stirfried noodles with egg, prawns, bean sprouts and spring onions was most welcome, and with a portion of steamed thai rice (£2.10) to soak up the last drops of those delicious sauces and Singha beer (£3.30) and jasmine tea (£2.20) to drink this was a meal to savour in deliciously relaxed surroundings. hat was a very popular dessert in Italian restaurants in the seventies,” said Salvo, the owner of Casanova in Crookes, after a long pause. I’d ordered a hot chocolate pancake and was worried I’d made a faux pas. Salvo then explained how decades ago, restaurants in Italy would proudly bring out carts with shelf after shelf of cakes and desserts. But once European food regulations came in full force in the 1970s saying all desserts needed constant refrigeration, restaurants had less room for them. Pancakes were therefore the perfect solution, as they took up very little room. Back to the present day, looking through the wide range of traditional Italian desserts, Casanova obviously don’t have this problem. Casanova opened in 1997 and it’s difficult to imagine Crookes without it. As the go-to Italian for many local families, it won Reader’s Choice at the Westside Restaurant Awards 2016 and more recently, the Regional Award for Best Family Restaurant for Yorkshire and Humberside. Despite being a huge, high-ceilinged restaurant, candlelit tables and warm furnishings made for a cosy setting. After a glass of Vini Bianchi house white

wine (£3.65 for 175ml) for me, a glass of prosecco (£5.25) for my partner and a tomato and garlic pizza bread with cheese (£5.35), I ordered the salmone con gamberetti (£8.25), whilst my partner had the funghi alla Casanova (£6.75) for starters. My partner’s pan-fried mushrooms in a garlic, white wine and dolcelatte cheese saucewere creamy and indulgent, whilst my starter came as a salmon parcel filled with prawns. Beautifully presented, it was drizzled in a moreish marie rose sauce on a bed of rocket and baby leaf. For mains, my partner had the pizza Salerno (£10.45) from the main menu, whilst I had the pollo al pesto (£14.95) from the specials board. With plenty of jalapeños, spicy pepperoni and chicken, the Salerno is certainly a pizza for those who like it hot. My pollo al pesto was a succulent chicken breast in a pool of homemade pesto, topped with shavings of parmesan and toasted pine nuts. Accompanied by potatoes and seasonal vegetables, it was the perfect Italian winter warmer. For dessert, I ordered the aforementioned hot chocolate pancake (£5.50) stuffed with vanilla ice cream and covered in a warm sticky chocolate sauce – a delicious balance of

hot and cold. Salvo was much more impressed by my partner’s choice of salted caramel and chocolate cheesecake. With a light biscuit base and a sweet creamy middle, my partner agreed that he had made the right choice. Whether you are a regular or a newcomer, you are always guaranteed a warm welcome from Salvo and his team at Casanova. All the dishes we had were freshly prepared and well presented. in the leafy S11 W Road postcode were roused from their beds at 5am on a dark November morning last year by the sound of chainsaws and a knock on the door from the police, a small local issue became national news. Home owners in this most lawabiding of suburbs were bluntly told to remove their cars immediately or have them towed away. Three members of the public were arrested, and Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg and Green Party leader Natalie Bennett rushed to the scene to show their support. For many Sheffield residents this was the tipping point - the moment when they realised this was not just a matter of a few tree-huggers making a lot of noise. And now, for many of them, the issue is bigger than the trees. It’s about the kind of city they want to live in. They see the secrecy surrounding the 25-year PFI (Private Financial Initiative) deal between Sheffield City Council and contractors Amey and ask: what do they have to hide? Westside spoke to the key players as the battle was set to enter a new phase. 94 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

“Trees are a frontline between us and vehicle exhausts. The majority of them are healthy and there’s no reason for them to come out, except for the disturbance of the pavement. “They’ve maintained street trees in other cities and they’ve got the means to do it here. Many techniques are included in the contract, so they wouldn’t cost the taxpayer, but they would cost Amey more. They are taking out the trees to protect their profits and that’s wrong. “The PFI contract means the council have handed over accountability. We can’t vote Amey out because they are never up for election. “The council say for every tree they cut down, a new one will be planted, but they aren’t being planted properly. They are planting them on top of the roots of the old ones. “The council should make sure Amey work to national best practice, and at the very least, enforce solutions that wouldn’t cost the city another penny. “They are still looking at it from the point of view of highway engineering and seeing the trees as a problem, rather than an asset.”

“I’ve not seen the whole contract. Even Nick Clegg, who was involved in securing the money when he was deputy prime minister, hasn’t seen it. “Sometimes there’s good reasons for a tree to come out and the protesters at STAG (Sheffield Tree Action Groups) understand that. But even when The Independent Tree Panel has suggested trees be kept, they’ve not been. With Rustlings Road, they were ignored. “My understanding is that the Rustlings Road trees were healthy and could have been saved. The council sat on the report from July and published it half an hour before they started the chainsaws. “The Rustlings Road trees have gone, but the campaign moves on. Now, we have two big issues. One is Western Road’s war memorial trees (dedicated to Westways Primary School pupils who fought in the First World War). “The other is Rivelin Valley Road. That petition is close to 5,000 signatures. If they get that, they can debate it with the council. We’re proposing a cross-party working group for Western Road. It’s a new year and a chance for us to reset the dial.

Alison Teal, Green Party councillor for Nether Edge and Sharrow Ward “I’ve been looking at whether road signage is being done legally. “When they’ve used “no parking” signs, they haven’t applied to the Department of Transport in the way they were supposed to. “The cabinet member for infrastructure and transport, Mazher Iqbal, has now admitted there were never any signs on Rustlings Road. At the time, Bryan Lodge, cabinet member for environment at Sheffield City Council, said there were signs and officers had taken photos to prove it. “I don’t think we can move on while the issue is still current. I recently met with Simon Green, the director of Sheffield’s Place Management Team, who signed off on Rustlings Road. “He said 6,000 trees are meant to come down in the core investment period, 2012 to 2017. The core investment period ends in September 2017, so 2,000 are to be felled between now and then. “I asked what happens contractually if they don’t manage to fell them all and he said, “I don’t know.” “The council are looking at ending their contract with Veolia, which they were supposedly locked into until 2036. So perhaps the roads can be under council control again soon.”

Luke Seed, member of SORT (Save Our Roadside Trees) “I live on Rustlings Road. On 17 November at about 5am, I heard a knock on the door. A policeman was there saying, “You've got to move your car. If you don’t move it, it'll be towed.” “I protested, “This can't be legal!” and he said, “It is.” So I got dressed and sent a text to the others. “After I'd moved our cars, the police said that if I went into the area where they were working, I'd be arrested. So my neighbours and I stood on the wall of my property, which is underneath the canopy of the tree. “A representative of the council came up to us and said: ‘This is a perfectly legal traffic regulation order. It's been posted on the road.’ “But if someone had posted an order seven days in advance, somebody would have noticed. “After that, my wife found it difficult to sleep because she was concerned they were going to come back. “I wrote to the police commissioner. He replied: ‘The police hadn't intended on being involved, but Amey didn't have enough people to knock on doors, so they felt a moral obligation to get involved.’ “The arrogance, particularly of the Labour group, is breathtaking. They’re not acting as representatives of the people.”

“Streets Ahead is the biggest investment ever seen in roads, street trees and infrastructure in the city we all love. This represents our opportunity to replace trees where necessary so that they don’t just last for the next ten years, but for the next hundred years. For our children and our grandchildren. “We are announcing a series of new commitments to the people of Sheffield for 2017. It’s important to be clear that this is not necessarily about replacing fewer trees, although we will continue to listen to the views of residents regarding the trees. This is about working in a clear, transparent and collaborative way, and working to regain the trust of people in Sheffield. “We reiterate our apology for the mistakes that we have made, and we understand that we need to show that we have learned from what happened. We have already promised that no work will begin before 7am and that we will publish the Independent Tree Panel advice well in advance of any work beginning on trees.”

Sports Village is a £30million complex and Alistair and Jonny Brownlee cut the ribbon on 34 acres of sports pitches which have been fully reconstructed. It comprises six astroturf pitches in total, eight natural turf pitches and six multi-use courts, all of which are floodlit. For the floodlighting alone there’s 101 columns, 604 lights and 480 miles of cable. The super-stylish new Mercedes-Benz EClass Coupé ticks all the right boxes for comfort, performance and the latest technology, including full smartphone integration, the latest driver assistance systems and the option of semi-autonomous driving. Unique in this segment is a ‘floating’ widescreen cockpit. Made up of ‘virtual instruments’ and positioned in the driver’s direct field of vision, it can be tailored to each individual. A new 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine will join three petrol powertrains at launch, which delivers 194hp and CO2 emissions of 106g/km. The first deliveries will arrive in April.

The Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 combines a three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, which reduces fuel consumption to 134.5mpg yet is still capable of sprinting from 0-62mph in just 6.9 seconds. The combined power output of 224hp is impressive. The new MINI Countryman, which is 20cm longer and 3cm wider than its predecessor, also features a touchscreen function for the first time as well touch-free electronic tailgate control. FIRST RESIDENT MOVES IN Audrey Denton has become the first permanent resident at The Porterbrook in Sheffield. The 89-year-old moved from her apartment on Ecclesall Road South into the new luxurious care home, which boasts a cinema, piano bar and beauty salon and, is on Tapton Crescent Road in Crosspool. Audrey’s son, Chris Denton who is a motor dealer, said: “When Mum and I visited, we thought the place looked fabulous. The rooms and the en-suite bathrooms are superb. “The staff are wonderful, especially the general manager, Daphney Nobelle (pictured), who is so friendly she is a delight to deal with.”

Jo Lenton, head of community nursing at the hospice, said: “The car has been used daily by the rapid response team and is proving a vital part of the work we do across Sheffield. “It is good to have such a physical presence out across the city so the general public are aware we do a lot of our work in the community and not just at the hospice itself.”
