Refreshingly different WITH NEW-LOOK OFFICES, A NEW LOGO AND A COLOURFUL APPROACH, THE FUTURE LOOKS VERY BRIGHT FOR SPENCER THE ESTATE AGENT.

here’s a new and exciting shop front on Ecclesall Road. With its quirky, playful signage and bright interior, you may be surprised to find out that the premises in question is a very familiar name in the Sheffield business community… Spencer, The Estate Agent. Despite the rebrand only happening this summer, Nicola Spencer has been at the helm for the past five years. Previously her parents’ business, managing director Nicola felt the time had come to make her mark – quite literally –

with a logo in her own handwriting. The look of their office has also changed. Now extended next door and over two floors, it’s a fun and relaxed environment to reflect the fact that Spencer is offering a refreshingly different property service. “Estate agents tend to look very corporate and serious, so we wanted to be more colourful and approachable,” says Nicola. “We’re not sales people. We are here to promote properties and to give you all the information you need. Moving house is a big decision, so we want to take good care of our clients.” And whilst Spencer’s strength lies in its ability to change and adapt, there is one aspect of the company’s ethos that has remained the same throughout its 23 years in business – honesty. “Choosing to have my signature as the logo was my way of saying, ‘my word is my bond,’” says Nicola. “We’ve always kept up with the times. We had a mobilefriendly website before most other agencies and are about

to relaunch the site again to make it even more user-friendly.” Nicola started helping out at Spencer in 1998 and immediately fell in love with the profession. “Once I started, I got completely involved. I love every aspect of property – and I think that’s really important. Estate agents need to be just as excited as their clients.” Spencer specialise in five areas of property; property sales, property management (rentals), block management, development design and interior design (house doctoring). The development design service includes discussions with developers in the initial planning stages and looking at layouts that are on trend and fit in with the current market. Whereas, the block management service involves managing the entire development and surrounding communal areas. “Our aim is to make sure vendors, developers and homeowners all get what they want,” continues Nicola, “And because we are an independent business, we don’t have to answer to anyone, meaning we can tailor our services to suit our clients’ needs.” What’s more, you will find a dedicated team with a passion for property and a brilliant knowledge of the local area. Spencer are also

just as keen to support local organisations and are proud sponsors of the Sheffield Rangers JFC, the Ecclesall Rangers, Hallam FC and @The Academy, who provide sports facilities for kids. Going the extra mile for their clients is the standard at Spencer, as is proved by the steady stream of thank you cards and testimonials. Nicola believes that a happy workforce equates to many happy customers and implements a ‘zero-tolerance approach to negativity’ in her office. And as a working mother herself, she understands that her female employees need flexible hours in order to balance their work with their family life. “We are proud to employ a number of strong, determined women,” adds Nicola. “The property world is still a male-dominated place, but it is possible to have a successful career and a family. “I think a lot of our competitors expected me to leave the business when I had my twins a couple of years ago, but if anything, I’m working harder than ever before and am loving every minute!” It all adds up to a complete package for a local business with strong roots in the area and a modern, dynamic approach that means Spencer, The Estate Agent is here to stay.

‘Our aim is to make sure vendors, developers and homeowners all get what they want. And because we are an independent business, we don’t have to answer to anyone, meaning we can tailor our services to suit our clients’ needs.’

MORFITT SMITH HAVE TEAMED UP WITH CASH FOR KIDS TO HELP DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN.

Help make it a very merry Christmas etween the tinsel and the turkey, it is easy to forget that the festive period should be a time of giving, and of reflection. One in four children are living in poverty in South Yorkshire and last year’s record breaking Mission Christmas appeal saw Cash for Kids’ deliver gifts to 21,458 children. This is why Morfitt Smith estate agents has teamed up with Hallam FM for the second year to launch the Christmas campaign. Cash for Kids are encouraging people to buy an extra Christmas gift that can then be distributed to needy children at risk of waking up to nothing on Christmas Day. This year a ‘virtual gift’ can also be donated by texting Hallam to 70808 to donate £5 to the campaign. Morfitt Smith are the official drop-off point for your Christmas gift donations, and with branches in Banner Cross, Hillsborough and Crookes, you’re never far from your local branch. Hundreds more local businesses have also signed up to become drop-off points, and are hoping to make this year the best fundraiser yet. In the last year alone they have provided support for Hallam Heroes, Happy Street and area manager Kaye Orwin has completed a charity skydive. It is this ongoing charity work – in addition to the fundraising work they do with local pre-schools – that has led to Morfitt Smith being shortlisted in The Negotiator Awards for Community Champion of the Year.

B

26 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

And it’s not just their charity work they have been recognised for. They also recently received the Negotiator Awards’ silver award for New Agency of the Year. Paul Batty, director of Morfitt Smith explains why this month’s Christmas appeal is particularly close to his heart. “Christmas is such a lovely time of year for bringing friends and families together and we all remember the excitement of waking up on Christmas morning to find out what presents we have – but not everyone is as fortunate. “Mission Christmas is such an important and worthy cause to ensure every child has a smile on their face on Christmas morning. Our mission is to raise as much awareness as possible in support of the appeal.” Once collected, the gifts are distributed to organisations responsible for the care of children, including social services, youth groups, schools and local community groups, and many other organisations across the region. In support of the Mission Christmas appeal, Morfitt Smith are also giving away a weekend theatre trip to London, including tickets to see Wicked, a trip on the London Eye, two nights in a four-star central London hotel (breakfast included) and rail travel. Everyone who donates a present to Mission Christmas through Morfitt Smith will receive a free #lilsmiffy bear and a ticket number. The winning ticket will be posted on social media and in the new Morfitt Smith e-magazine for the winner to come

forward to receive their prize. Ticket numbers are limited to the first 500 people. One entry per household. The Mission Christmas team kicked started their campaign with Santa for the official “switch on” of the Christmas grotto at the Banner Cross office. The team will also be taking part in festive fundraising events throughout the Christmas period, including Christmas Jumper Day on 9 December and a coin exchange; exchanging chocolate coins in each office for a donation to Cash For Kids. If you want to help a disadvantaged child this Christmas, drop your gifts into your local Morfitt Smith branch, until Wednesday 23 December. Alternatively, you can donate to Mission Christmas online at www.hallamfm.co.uk/mission or text HALLAM to 70808. Let’s help every child living in South Yorkshire have a very merry Christmas. WINE TASTING

Westside

A toast to the perfect partnership

Words: Molly McGreevy Pictures: Mark Rodgers

WESTSIDE AND MY FATHERS HEART, WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM WINE EXPERT JOHN MITCHELL, GET INTO THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT. t’s the perfect partnership. Two of the region’s leading independent brands have come together to work on projects you’ll be hearing a lot about over the coming months. The premier kitchen specialists My Fathers Heart and Westside decided to celebrate with a glass or two of wine, what else? And who else to dispense it and give us a taste of his expertise than John Mitchell? So it was that My Fathers Heart, Westside and Mitchell’s Wines held a special preChristmas tasting at the magnificent Broadfield Court kitchen showroom. Guests were greeted with a glass of fizz before blind tasting two white and four red wines each, having been challenged to guess the grape, country of origin and price of each bottle. Between wines the guests were treated to a three course taster menu, cooked by Andy Cummings of Bora, using one of the brand’s combined cooktop and extractor units. The revolutionary unit assures 100 per cent clean air by extracting grease and dirt downwards at a rate of four metres per second, meaning Andy could prepare a delicious meal without dirtying the air of the showroom. “Lots of normal extractors just do not do the job,” said Andy. “The Bora unit has changed the way people use their kitchens.” Before the starter, John Mitchell, owner of Mitchell’s Wines, poured the first wine - Cloudy Bay Marlborough 2016 Vintage, a sauvignon blanc from New Zealand, priced at £22. “This wine is iconic,” said John, whilst explaining that because the grapes were grown in the Southern Hemisphere, the vineyard was harvested in March. First glass down, the tasters turned to their starter, enjoying Asian style scallops whilst John poured the second glass of white, a William Fèvre chablis 2013. Angela de Jong, of Ciao Interiors, was first to guess the grape: “I think it’s a chardonnay, but only because I don’t normally like chardonnay. But I like this one, it’s nice because it isn’t too oaky.”

I

Guesses recorded, John revealed the wine was indeed a chardonnay, originating in France, with a price tag of £12.99. Before the main course, John introduced the first of the red wines – the Ondarre Rioja Reserva, a red tempranillo wine. “I think it could be a merlot, maybe from Spain,” said Grace Kerali, of G&M Healthcare, correctly guessing the wine’s country of origin before John revealed the wine was, in fact, an award winner, having been awarded 95 points at the International Wine Challenge: “the equivalent to an Olympic medal,” said John. Attention was turned to one of My Fathers Heart’s stunning show kitchens, where guests Phillip Prince and Vernon Atkins donned their aprons and helped to prepare the main course. Keen to try out the innovative kitchen appliances, Phillip and Vernon experienced the power and beauty of the Bora cooktop and extractor first hand, as the remaining guests moved on to their fourth wine – just in time for the main. “This wine is absolutely perfect for pairing with beef,” said John, as he poured the La Côte Sauvage Cairanne Côtes du Rhône Villages 2012, which comes from a small collection of villages in France. The second red was a big hit with Jill Atkins, a customer

of My Fathers Heart. She said: “I think it is the nicest one I’ve tried so far, it’s got a nice bouquet.” The next wine, Beefsteak club reserve Malbec, was popular with My Fathers Heart customer Anne Brand: “It is beautifully smooth,” she said. “It complements the beef beautifully, but I’m not an expert and I’ve got no idea what it is or where it comes from.” Despite not being well-versed in blind tasting wine, Anne is familiar with the high quality, aesthetically stunning and technologically advanced kitchens that My Fathers Heart produces. Anne and husband Chris have been proud owners of a My Fathers Heart kitchen since August and, as keen hosts, have been entertaining from the heart of their home ever since, their most recent dinner party being a curry for 30 people. For the finale came, ‘the best wine of the night’, according to John, a Berton Vineyards Reserve Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, priced at £12.99. An Australian wine, coonawarra is an Aboriginal word for honeysuckle, and was very well received just in time for dessert – cinnamon scotch pancakes. Having tested their wine knowledge, the most knowledgeable guest – Vernon Atkins – was rewarded with a book, so he can hone his knowledge of wines. Jonathan Coulthard, owner of My Fathers Heart, said: ‘John Mitchell is an absolute star and kept everyone enthralled with his wit and knowledge of his gorgeous wines, Bora’s whilst Andy Cummings produced Andy Cummings some fabulous hot bites on the Bora at work in the cooktop…the two complementing My Fathers Heart Kitchen each other brilliantly!” “It was also great to fire up one of our fabulous SieMatic kitchens, we definitely ended up in the kitchen at this party, what a great night.” My Fathers Heart Unit 3a, Broadfield Court, Sheffield, S8 0XF Tel: 0114 250 0177 info@myfathersheart.com

ENTERTAINMENT

SHE’S BACK… OH, YES SHE IS! CORRIE STAR WENDI PETERS TALKS TO PHOEBE SEYMOUR ABOUT RETURNING TO HER ROOTS AT THE CRUCIBLE. chemes and scams were her bread and butter on Coronation Street. Now the actress who played Cilla BattersbyBrown is trading the cobbled streets of Weatherfield for the bright lights of the Sheffield stage. Wendi Peters will be joining a starstudded cast at the Lyceum for this year’s panto production of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs as the Wicked Queen. The panto baddie is a character we all love to hate and Wendi says she cannot wait to take on the role. “Oh, there’s nothing like being a baddie,” says Wendi. “It’s absolutely brilliant. I love being booed and hissed, especially by the kids. That’s all part of the panto. “It’s a really important thing is panto. It’s the first time a lot of these kids have been in a live theatre. They’re our future theatre audiences, so if they come and have a wonderful time, they’ll keep coming back and move on to other things and become theatre buffs for the rest of their lives, which is just brilliant.” Though Wendi is best known for being on our screens as Cilla, she is no stranger to the stage and says performing in Sheffield will be something of a homecoming. “I loved being in Corrie, I adored the character and I loved everybody there and I had a brilliant time, but I’d already done 15 years in the theatre, so I feel like I’m just going back to doing what I do. I did lots of musicals, it’s where I come from, so I’m really lucky that I’ve managed to go back to do a lot of stuff like that. “My first ever job, when I left college in ’87, was here at The Crucible. I did panto here. I was one of the dancers in Cinderella, so I feel like 29 years later, I’m coming home, coming back to where I started.” Most families will be very familiar with the story of Snow White and the Wicked Queen, but what can we expect from her modern, panto incarnation? “Obviously, she’ll be as glamorous. I’d like to play her quite regal and quite posh, and she might just slip every now and then into something a bit northern. And of course we’ll have the old hag that tries to persuade Snow White with the apple, so we’ll have fun with that.”

S

There is plenty of choice for panto fans across the region. Here are a few highlights: Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs 9 December – 8 January Lyceum Tel: 0114 249 6000 www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Tickets: £12 - £26, family ticket £78 Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs 10 December – 1 January Buxton Opera House Tel: 0845 127 2190 www.buxtonoperahouse.org.uk Tickets: £17.50 - £23 Jack And The Beanstalk by Manor Operatic Society 27 December – 8 January Sheffield City Hall Tel: 01709 365108 or 0114 278 9789 www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk Tickets: £5.50 - £19 Jack And The Beanstalk by The James Brandon Company 1 – 31 December The Academy Theatre, Barnsley Tel: 01226 744442 www.theacademytheatre.co.uk Tickets: From £13.50, family ticket £44

The demand for pantomimes seems to get stronger and stronger every year (last year’s panto was seen by over 46,000 people), and Wendi believes they remain so popular because they are a deeply-loved tradition the whole family can get involved in. “It’s a good mixture of song and dance, comedy, audience participation and a bit of a spectacle as well – everybody loves to come and see lots of glitter,” she says. “Us Brits eccentric as we are - we’re known around the world for this silly thing. I think it’s such a wonderful British tradition, and I hope it never ends, because it’s great fun.” You can see Wendi and the rest of the cast – including Phil Gallagher (CBeebies’ Mister Maker), Damian Williams (Sheffield panto legend) and Joanna Sawyer (Becky from BBC One’s Our Girl) - in this year’s spectacular production at the Lyceum from Friday 9 December until Sunday 8 January.

Everyone here has been in the same boat and there’s a really sociable, friendly atmosphere - and guaranteed fun.” Her team of passionate, experienced instructors use top hats, feather boas, canes and songs from all the popular Broadway

shows, and classes are now based at a new studio on Ecclesall Road, offering a safe, nonjudgemental environment for women of all ages, shapes, sizes – as well as those with two left feet. Now is your chance to get fit, have fun and dance like no one is watching. Previous dance experience is not essential but a love of dance is, and, of course, those all-important jazz hands! Katy is offering free taster sessions from 24 November - 4 December and from 9 - 15 January 2017 at the Ecclesall Road studio, and local community venues in Mosborough, Chesterfield, Dronfield, Bakewell and Hope, for anyone who would like to try out a class before signing up. TESTIMONIALS FROM KATY’S CLIENTS: "I used to be a member of a gym and I hated it. I was a little apprehensive at first but I've lost weight, feel fitter and made friends. I had no co-ordination but Katy got me dancing." Carole Smith “I enjoy the classes as they are good fun, great exercise and I have to concentrate - so I’m unable to think about general worries and pressures of everyday life. It’s a great way to escape.” Nicola Hill "I'd just retired and I wanted a challenge. I thought I'd got two left feet and that I would struggle but it’s so much fun and I never stop laughing." CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS

UNITED NATIONS PHOEBE SEYMOUR AND RACHEL MARTIN FIND OUT WHY THE WHOLE WORLD LOVES CHRISTMAS. hristmas is celebrated in many countries around the world, and though the mode of celebration, the dates and the traditions vary, the festive spirit remains the same. Festivities can be startlingly different from country to country, but whether you're celebrating Christougenna in Greece, or Noeller in Turkey, you're sharing in the wonder and magic of the Christmas season. Here's a look at the ways Christmas is celebrated around the world, as told by some of the region’s restaurateurs.

C

GREECE: Kala Christougenna The Greek Christmas holiday traditionally spans twelve days – from December 25 to January 6, which is known as Epiphany Day. Some customs are ancient origins, whilst others have sprung up more recently. “On Christmas Eve, children - especially boys - often go out singing 'kalanda' (carols) in the streets,” says Dennis Mouzakis, owner of the Greedy Greek, Sharrow Vale Road. “They play drums, triangles and sing – sometimes carrying model boats decorated with nuts and painted gold. It’s a very old custom in the Greek Islands and children are often given money or sweets. “Due to the Christian Orthodox religion, it is customary to go to church on Christmas morning for the religious service. “Christmas trees are not traditional, but are in most homes now. A more traditional decoration is a shallow wooden bowl with a piece of wire suspended across the rim. A sprig of basil is wrapped around a Dennis wooden cross and Mouzakis once a day, the mother of the family dips the cross and basil into holy water and sprinkles the water in each room of the house. “Melomakarona and kourabiedes are the two varieties of Christmas cookies in Greece. The first are semolina, cinnamon, and clove cookies drenched in honey, while the second are fresh butter cookies sprinkled with powdered sugar and almonds. “Christopsomo is a traditional bread made on Christmas Eve, which has a cross carved into the top. On Christmas Day, the head of the household makes the sign of the cross above the loaf of bread, cuts it and gives a piece to everyone at the dining table. “Aghios Vassilis (Saint Basil) brings children presents on the 1 January. On this day the ‘renewal of waters’ also takes place, a ritual in which all water jugs in the house are emptied and refilled with new ‘St. Basil's Water.’

Ruth and Faruk Günay

TURKEY: Mutlu Noeller As 98 per cent of the country are Muslim, Christmas is not a largely celebrated in the religious sense. Turkey’s varied colonial history means they have adopted many other culture’s nonreligious traditions and customs. However, they are the country most credited for the invention of Father Christmas. “I’m originally from Sheffield, but I lived in Kemer for 10 years, so our family have experienced Christmas in both countries,” says Ruth Günay, owner of Lokanta, Broomhill. “It’s interesting because on the one hand they don’t celebrate the Christian side of things, but there is this connection to Father Christmas. They say St Nicholas was born in Turkey and was the Bishop of Myra, so that’s something that is celebrated. “Turkish people don’t tend to celebrate Christmas Day though. They celebrate all the things associated with Christmas at New Year. People open presents on New Year’s Day and I’ve noticed that shopping malls are becoming more and more decorated in Christmas trees and baubles and are looking more like they do here in Britain. “They’ve adopted a lot of European customs such as the turkey and even their word for Christmas, Noeller, is borrowed from the French word. School children love singing carols at this time – Jingle Bells is huge! “When it comes to food, families have big banquets, but like the Christmas meals at Lokanta, they tend to have smaller mezze dishes so they can concentrate on socialising. “In Istanbul, roast chestnuts are a popular street food. Pomegranate is another food associated with Christmas. Then, of course, there’s Turkish Delight.”

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS

THAILAND: Sùk-s n wan krít-mâat

ITALY: Bon Natale

Christmas isn’t an official public holiday in Thailand, with only a small minority of the Thai population being Christian (90 per cent are Buddhist). However, at this time of year hotel staff can be seen wearing Christmas hats, whilst shopping centres are decorated. “Buddhism is tolerant of all other religions, including Christianity, and this religious tolerance is part of the reason why a major Christian festival such as Christmas can also be enjoyed by Buddhists in Thailand,” says Jaraiya Sancunakorn, owner of Patoo Thai, Ecclesall Road. “The most famous Catholic church in Bangkok is the Holy Redeemer Church in the Ploenchit district. They have several Christmas masses every year, usually three English services a day both on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. “Christmas is not celebrated in the religious sense, and 25 December is a normal working day – though its impact is easy to spot commercially and, if you are in Bangkok in December, you will find Christmas-themed decorations. “December is among the busiest months of Thailand’s peak tourist season. Bangkok’s shopping centres and luxury hotels, with their Christmas trees and fairy lights, become Jaraiya Sancunakorn an attraction of their own. “What is Christmas without overdoing it on the food and drink? If staying at an international hotel in Bangkok, you are likely to come across popular gala buffet dinners for both Christmas and New Year. “Despite the fact that offices, schools, colleges and universities remain open on Christmas Day, residents will still observe the festivities. Children dress up in vibrant colours and most of the schools arrange various kinds of festive activities. “The distribution of gifts by Santa Claus, along with the singing of the Christmas carols and Christmas hymns, form a major part of the Christmas festivities and teachers will act out plays for the entertainment of the children.”

Traditionally, Italian Christmas celebrations would take place on Epiphany Day on 6 January, rather than on Christmas Day. Nowadays, families focus more on 25 December, but traditional customs and food vary throughout the country. Salvo “Christmas is very different, Iilardi depending on the region you live in, but it’s always a big family gathering with lots of food,” says Salvo Iilardi, owner of Casanova, Crookes. “The most important part of the table is the panettone. I’m from Sicily and a big tradition is to start with an anelletti al forno, which is a pasta dish baked in the oven. Then the main course is falsomagro – a roll of meat, filled with ham, cheese and egg in a tomato sauce. It’s very nutritious, and not as fattening as a lot of other Christmas meat dishes. “We also have cannolo - an Italian dessert pastry from the Sicilian region. By the time you finish, you can’t move! “It’s a big celebration for kids. Families tend to have Christmas trees and decorations, but nativity sets are even more popular. About 99 per cent of kids will have their own nativity set. It’s also a time to play games. “On 24 December, kids make a biscuit shaped like an animal with a boiled egg on top. The shell is decorated in different colours and then the biscuit is filled with dried figs and pine nuts. On Christmas Day, families usually go to church in the morning and kids get lots of presents, but it

CHRISTMAS IN THE PEAKS

Christmas feel PICTURESQUE PEAK VILLAGES AND TOWNS SUCH AS CASTLETON, BAKEWELL AND HASSOP ARE PARTICULARLY ATTRACTIVE DURING THE FESTIVE SEASON. f you love the feel of a good, oldfashioned Christmas then a festive trip into the Peak District is an absolute must. Picturesque settings such as Castleton, Bakewell and Hassop are delightful at any time of year but they take on a very special feel in December with local people going out of their way to make the streets, shops, cafes and churches look particularly appealing. For many people from all over Sheffield and North Derbyshire, a trip to Castleton at this time of year is particularly attractive. With the streets lined with Christmas trees and every shop window decorated and beautifully lit, it’s a glorious trip out whether you are catching up on Christmas shopping or just soaking up the atmosphere. The switch-on of the Christmas tree lights brought huge crowds to the town in midNovember, and the Christmas spirit will remain all the way through December. Bakewell also takes Christmas to its heart with the big Christmas lights switch-on in Bath Gardens taking place on Saturday 26 November. Throughout December the town

I

will take on its own special festive glow and of course as well as an impressive array of independent retail outlets, perfect for those special luxury gifts, the weekly Bakewell Market will take on a special festive atmosphere.

BOOKS

Connecting generations RISING STAR ANNEEKA LUDHRA’S MISSION TO DISCOVER THE TRUE FLAVOURS OF INDIA IS REVEALED IN A BRAND NEW BOOK FROM RMC MEDIA. ake seven grandmothers. Combine with 500 years’ experience. Finish with an up-and-coming star of Indian cookery. The result? A tasty mix of know-how and show-how that’s set to be a big hit this Christmas – with a little life advice thrown in for free. Anneeka Ludhra’s new book ‘Dadima’s: Celebrating Grandmother’s Wisdom Through Indian Cooking’ brings traditional expertise bang up-to-date in a cookbook with a difference. Berkshire-based Anneeka, 25, looked to the older generation as a starting point when she set out on a mission to discover the true flavours of the old country and connect generations in the process. She then added her own twist to almost 50 classic recipes, all of which are lavishly illustrated in the 224-page book. And the seven grandmothers she found through her network didn’t stop there. As well as being consulted on the finer points of Indian cooking, each of them added a little spice in the form of some pearls of wisdom to pass on to the younger generation. “Older people have so much to offer, not only in the secrets of the kitchen learned over many decades, but in life experience,” says

T

Anneeka. “Of course it’s the food that really does the talking in the book – heeding the life advice is optional!” The research for her book took her all over the country to seek out grandmothers she knew of, renowned for their excellent cooking. “We carefully prepared every recipe from scratch with the aim of showing people how to make truly authentic dishes at home. The result is a far cry from what you might find in most Indian restaurants. Their menus feature cuisine which has, not surprisingly, been adapted to the English palate. But in the case of the grandmothers, there was more of a connection with India, and the knowledge they brought over here with them has been passed down across the centuries.” The recipes chosen for the book are written in an informal style, with plenty of pointers for the amateur cook. Among them are old-school favourites like aloo paratha (stuffed potato flatbread), aloo gobi, mah di daal, cholay and pea and potato samosas, together with dishes for those with a sweeter tooth, such as mango kulfi and barfi. The handsome hardback book (ISBN 9781-907998-25-6) is published by RMC Media and makes the ideal Christmas gift.

‘Dadima’s: Celebrating Grandmother’s Wisdom Through Indian Cooking’ is available via Amazon priced at £19.95. For more information, visit www.dadimas.co.uk. Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com 71

EATING OUT

A sense of calm THE TRANQUIL SPACE OF THE CATHEDRAL’S 1554 CAFE IS HEAVENLY – IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. t sounds faintly ridiculous to describe a venue that has dominated Sheffield’s cityscape since the 12th century and remains the oldest building in the city to still be in daily use as a bit of a find. Nevertheless, I found the experience of walking into 1554, the café in the heart of Sheffield Cathedral, to be something of a revelation. One second your senses are being bombarded by the sights and sounds of the city as the Christmas shopping frenzy gathers pace, the next all is peace, stillness and a perfect sense of calm. We entered through the gift shop, crossed the back of the cathedral and stepped into a café that provides contemporary light refreshments in a streamlined, elegant setting with a simply stunning stained glass window backdrop. 1554 takes its name from the year Mary Tudor granted a royal charter which returned land and property to Sheffield that had been seized by the crown. Today, funds raised in the coffee shop help towards the upkeep of the cathedral.

I

72 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

The menu changes daily with freshly made soup and sandwiches and an eye-catching front counter temptingly stuffed with savouries and cakes. Beverages are supplied by (who else?) the Heavenly Coffee Company. We started with a pleasingly busy ploughman’s platter (£5.95) including a pork pie from Wateralls in Sheffield market, cheddar, pickle, coleslaw, salad and ploughman’s pickle. Our second main course, a goat’s cheese, roast tomato and sweet chilli flan (£3.95) was boosted to hearty main course proportions by being plated up with generous portions of three hearty salads – puy lentil and tomato with feta, pasta with pesto, roast vegetables and feta and coleslaw. Once you’ve ordered at the counter, table service is quick and efficient but this is a great place to linger and admire the light reflected through the stained glass onto the pale wooden floors and chairs; it all makes for a bright, lovely environment. The coffee is strong, smooth and among the finest examples to be found in the city. I

sampled the cappuccino (£2.45) and the flat white (£2.50) and, since we were not inclined to hurry, deliciously moist wedges of Bakewell tart (£2.65) and gluten-free pecan brownie (£2.65) rounded off one of the most nurturing and spiritually enriching lunches to be had in the city. 1554 Sheffield Cathedral Church Street, Sheffield, S1 1HA Tel: 0114 275 3434

The Matterhorn

TOUR DE FORCE

CHRIS WILSON STAYS ON THE MOVE BY TRAIN, BUS AND BOAT TO SEE THE SIGHTS IN SWITZERLAND. hatever happened to the Grand Tour? Back in the 17th century, wealthy English gentlemen would spend several months travelling across Europe, accruing knowledge and purchasing beautiful antiques and carpets to furnish their country estates back home. Nowadays, even if budgets are not an issue, we tend to settle for a single location. Unpack, head for the pool, and return home a fortnight later, several shades darker but no wiser. It’s a habit that has not gone unnoticed among our continental cousins. As I checked in to one hotel for a single night’s stay on a whistlestop tour of Switzerland, my host was vexed about the holiday habits of the archetypal Brit abroad. “Why do you stay in one place? You should see more of the country you are staying in,” I was told. I didn’t need the lecture; she was preaching to the converted. Have suitcase on wheels will travel…that’s my motto. Mind you, it does make it a lot easier when the country you are visiting is Switzerland, where the trains, buses and boats always run on time and itineraries can be planned with total confidence. Just to make the travel easier, you can buy

W

a Swiss Pass for unlimited travel on eight consecutive days on railways, boats and most alpine postbuses, covering a network of 16,000km. The Swiss Pass also allows a half price reduction on all privately owned funicular and mountain railways and free entrance to 450 museums. It really is the ultimate ticket to ride. On arrival at Zurich airport, it was a short stroll to the adjoining railway station and half an hour by train to the sleepy town of Kusnacht and the Romantik Seehotel Sonne. Dating back to 1641, the picturesque location on Lake Zurich was mesmerising and the hotel’s private bathing area was irresistible on a scorching July day. The water was crystal clear – very refreshing and with nothing but the occasional steam boat gliding by to make ripples on the water – and a quick dip was Grimsel Hospiz

the perfect way to unwind. Dinner on the terrace, watching the sun set and the lights from small towns across the bay start to twinkle, added to my sense of wellbeing. Food and wine, I realised, was going to be a major plus point. Throughout the tour I ate incredibly well on outstanding local produce including home-smoked salmon, veal, river fish and berries. The wine, meanwhile, was a revelation. It is produced in all 26 Cantons, although not in sufficient volume that you are likely to find it imported to your local supermarket. So, make the most of it: many patriotic bars and restaurants stock only Swiss wines, and that is no hardship when the choice includes creamy sparkling Cremands, flinty Rieslings and smooth rich Merlots. After that first night, I awakened to a ridiculously perfect chocolate-box view of mountains, lake, blue skies and fluffy clouds. So I checked out with some sadness, but I had an itinerary to follow and a series of trains, boats and buses to catch. The next few days passed in a blur of activity with fresh highlights around every corner. Whatever our mode of transport, the views were amazing and if some, even for

TRAVEL

first time visitor, were eerily familiar, it might have been because some of Switzerland’s most picturesque scenery is much loved by TV and film location scouts. So, at various times, we found ourselves in the same spot as some of fiction’s most memorable action scenes involving legendary heroes and villains. On one train journey through the Beernese Oberland region, we found ourselves looking up at the Reichenbach Falls, where Sherlock Holmes and his arch rival Professor Moriarty fought and perished in a dramatic death plunge onto the rocks below… until a disapproving public demanded that logic be defied and Holmes was resurrected in a later story. Perhaps the most spectacular hotel on our tour was the Grimsel Hospiz, perched at 2000m in the middle of bleakly beautiful rocky landscape on the turquoise waters of an artificial lake which is built on top of a hydro-electric dam. We travelled by train and bus, then the hotel’s mini bus took us through the dizzying steep mountain roads. It came as no surprise to learn that James Bond and Blofeld had battled it out on these very same twisting roads in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The hotel is accessible only by cable car in winter and is so remote that skiing is too dangerous. People come to revel in the luxurious hotel and watch the scenery. This being high summer, we simply drove on a road blasted through the rock, arriving at our mountain retreat not quite able to believe our eyes. Don’t miss those views, but also don’t miss the wine cellar of which the owners are rightly proud. A more sedate mode of arrival, though just as exciting in its own way, is the steam boat to Lucerne, which is worth a walking tour for its hidden alleys, teeming town squares and beautifully preserved 13th century city walls. Summer in Switzerland means there are, of course, mountains to climb, and it was appropriate that we ended our truncated version of the Grand Tour in Zermatt, the town that started it all. The Matterhorn dominates the view here and there are wonderful summer walks for all levels of fitness.

GET THERE AND GET AROUND Switzerland Tourism For more information on Switzerland visit www.MySwitzerland.com or call our Switzerland Travel Centre on the International freephone 00800 100 200 30 or e-mail, for information info.uk@myswitzerland.com; for packages, trains and air tickets sales@stc.co.uk.

The Reichenback Falls

However, if you simply want to take in the view, there is a train up to Gornergat at an altitude of 3,089m. We were staying at the Monte Rosa hotel, which was the mountaineering base of Edward Whymper, the man who made the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn. Legend has it that Queen Victoria disapproved of such dangerous leisure pursuits and pronounced that it must stop. To anyone with a remotely rebellious taste for adventure this was just the incentive needed – and hardy hikers have been coming to Zermatt to tackle the Matterhorn and the less challenging lower ranges ever since. Zermatt is a quirky town. Local farmers still drive their goats down the main street every day, but the glitzy bars and restaurants are testament to the fact that this is one of Switzerland’s most fashionable resorts, winter and summer. But while the town may be buzzing the one thing you won’t hear is the roar of the internal combustion engine. Cars are banned, although you can always find an electric buggy at the station to transport you and your luggage to the hotel. And that seems a suitably strange final stop on this truncated version of the Grand Tour.

Continuing success WHEN A LOCAL BUSINESS IS STILL GOING STRONG AFTER MORE THAN 40 YEARS IT MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT... TIME TO TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE CONTINUED SUCCESS STORY THAT IS SHEFFIELD WINDOW CENTRE. t was way back in 1975, when Rubik’s Cubes were all the rage and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen topped the charts, that the company was founded. Fast forward 41years and Ian Hunter, who took over the running of Sheffield Window Centre (SWC) in the early eighties, is managing director... and with all his four grown-up children also involved, this is a true family business. You don’t last that long in the same city unless you receive consistently excellent feedback from satisfied customers – and as the decades have rolled by, generations of Sheffield folk have found SWC to be the first, and most reliable, name they look for. SWC was also the first Sheffield business to be given Trusted Trader status by Which?, a nationwide consumer champion website that not only tests products from washing machines to power tools, but also gives local companies a rigorous assessment before naming only the very best on their online directory of recommended trades people. Of course, there have been big changes since 1975 and SWC has stayed at the very top by investing in new machinery, adopting green policies, and constantly researching methods of production to provide the most up-to-date levels of security and thermal efficiency.

I

A family affair... L-R: Ian, Sam, Amy and Ian Hunter

82 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

The one thing that hasn’t changed, and never will, is their “old fashioned” approach to selling. SWC is renowned for its ‘No Pressure Policy’ – leaving customers to decide in their own time. Whether it be price, product, or service – they can’t be beaten and that’s the reason they never need to push or pester. The company, which has premises on Oakbrook Road, Broad Lane, Scotland Street and Rockingham Street, uses top brand REHAU – a market leader in polymer extrusion – for all their installations. Their multi-chambered profile uPVC doesn’t warp or discolour like so many lesser brands. And if you’re worried you won’t be able to get a frame to match your desired colour or design, don’t be. Frames come in a variety of coloured foils, including cream, black, grey and green, as well as several wood grain colours including rosewood and oak. You can also have your frames sprayed to match any RAL colour – so you’ll have new windows that look exactly how you want them to. Good-looking windows are no good if you can still feel the chill – but thanks to SWC, you won’t feel a thing. Their standard windows have energy efficiency ratings of A, while their standard double-glazed units are made from Pilkington’s KS glass, are argonfilled and incorporate a warm edge spacer bar to retain the heat in your home. It’s not just about staying cosy, though – energy efficient windows can help you to make big savings on your heating bill. Perhaps the most important thing you want from a window is to know that it’s secure, that it will keep would-be thieves successfully at bay. SWC’s windows are fitted with a multi-point shoot bolt locking mechanism – the best there is. They also fit anti-jemmy devices on all vulnerable opening windows –

so you’ve got the peace of mind of knowing that you’ll be as safe as possible. Don’t be misled by the name, by the way – SWC do more than just windows. They offer an expert stained glass service and fascias and soffits, as well as high-quality doors. These all have Hoppe Security handles fitted as standard – approved by the police, no less – as well as cylinder locks which are anti-pick, drill, snap and bump and again have a multipoint locking system. There’s more, too – specifically, conservatories. Due to the advances in glass specification, SWC can now provide conservatories, which are suitable for yearround use, thanks to glass which has been specifically designed for the purpose. It offers a wide range of benefits including thermal insulation with solar control, glare reduction, enhanced sound insulation and self-cleaning properties. The company can also install underfloor heating and laminated floors, as well as taking care of the building, plastering and electrical work, so you only deal with one point of contact throughout the entire process. Get in touch with Sheffield Window Centre today – they care about your windows, doors and conservatories just as much as you do. Tax Planning So Christmas is upon us which means that the 5th of April is just around the corner. This day marks the end of the tax year and is the date by which you should have finalised any tax-efficient savings plans and pension issues. If you have money to save, but have yet to use up your ISA allowance, make sure you take advantage of this tax-free form of investment before the April deadline. The allowance is £15,240 for the current year. If you don’t use your allowance by this date, it will be gone for good, as you cannot carry any allowance which you haven’t used over to the following tax year. The ISA allowance rises to £20,000 from 6th April 2017. Equally, make the most of allowances on your pension contributions to cut your tax bill. Business owners can contribute up to £40,000 to their pension annually tax-free, effectively a tax efficient way of saving for the future. The lifetime allowance for pensions reduced from £1.25m to £1m from 6th April 2016. This affects not just those with individual personal pensions but also employees or members of occupational pensions such as the NHS pension scheme, teacher pension schemes, dentists etc. It is possible to still apply for the increased allowance to be retained however, applications must be made to protect this. Tax issues can be complicated but at Hamnett Wealth Management, we speak in plain English and explain everything comprehensively. We try to make everything as simple and easy as we possibly can. We encourage you to ask as many questions as you need until you are comfortable and able to make an informed decision. We take time to understand your individual aims and objectives. IN BRIEF

New private rooms at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital’s haematology department

Chief Executive of Sheffield Theatres Dan Bates and Meadowhall centre director, Darren Pearce

Meadowhall announces partnership with Sheffield Theatres Meadowhall and Sheffield Theatres have announced a joint initiative to engage more young people in theatre and performance. From November, the two iconic Sheffield establishments will be working together to specifically encourage younger audiences to enjoy theatre by giving them opportunity to access a rich cultural education. The partnership will begin by enabling Sheffield Theatres to offer 100 free tickets to children at schools in the east of Sheffield – including Wincobank Nursery Infant School and Tinsley Meadows Primary Academy – where engagement with the arts is the lowest in the city. Darren Pearce, Meadowhall centre director, said: “We’re very proud to be linking up with our city’s well established and award-winning theatres. Our aim is to engage a more diverse audience and who knows, perhaps inspire some performers of the future.”

Westbourne School 2017 Scholarship Day Applications are being taken for Year 7 entry scholarship places at Westbourne School, Sheffield’s only co-educational independent school for children aged three to 16. The scholarships are an excellent opportunity for more able pupils at any school in the area whose parents are considering the option of the independent sector at secondary school level. Scholarships are awarded to recognise academic achievement and are awarded in the fields of academic achievement, music, sport and all round ability. Scholarship Examination Day will be held at the Westbourne Road school in January. Applicants will also be required to submit a portfolio of evidence identifying their achievements and progression to date as well as their future expectations and they may be requested to attend a practical interview following the exams. Visits to the school to meet Mr Hicks and tour the school should be arranged by contacting the Senior School secretary on 0114 266 0374 or e-mail: swoodhead@westbourneschool.co.uk

Charity cash boosts blood patients’ care at Sheffield hospital Patient care at the city’s newest hospital ward has been given a huge boost, thanks to a £300,000 donation from Sheffield Hospitals Charity. The charity has funded furniture, artwork and other patient comforts designed to make the new private rooms at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital’s haematology department a home from home for patients. There has been a rapid rise in the number of people needing complex treatments for blood cancers and other disorders at the hospital, prompting the need for an extra 17 single rooms to be built where patients can undergo difficult treatment in isolation to protect their weakened immune systems. The rooms also provide more privacy and peace. Charity bosses met with patients, families, staff and support groups to design the rooms and choose features to enhance patient care.

Atkinsons Santa adds festive sparkle to St Luke’s Hospice Christmas Santa Claus will be visiting Atkinson’s department store from 26 November to 22 December, with all proceeds from his magical grotto being donated to St Luke’s Hospice. Situated on Atkinsons’ first floor, the grotto will be open from 11am to 3pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and 10.30am to 4pm Sunday. Entry costs £5, with each young visitor receiving a gift from Santa and an ‘I’ve visited Santa’ certificate – keepsakes of the visit are also available for an additional donation.

IN BRIEF

Ladies take aim at Hayton castle MY FATHERS HEART FOODLOVERS CHARITY EVENT My Fathers Heart will be hosting an exclusive charity event for a special selection of food-lovers on 1 December to raise money for the NSPCC. They will have jazz musicians, Christmas cakes and a fabulous auction with the opportunity to buy items donated by Siematics, Subzero Wolf and Gaggenau, not to mention a variety of culinary delights from Sheffield’s favourite independent food sources, such as cheeses from Porter Brook deli and top-end ports from Starmore Boss. Raffle prizes will be presented by Coronation Street’s Joe Duttine whilst his favourite Yorkshire food emporium, Mr Pickles’, will be offering a selection of culinary delights.

Yorkshire Fillies was created to fill the yawning gap of opportunities for ladies living in the north to shoot clays. However, continually having to drive for hours to find a ladies’ shoot in what is still a male dominated sport got Louise Alford's mind working and Yorkshire Fillies was born. From approaching friends for the first shoot, many of whom had never shot before, by the third ladies’ day, the event had attracted interest from far and wide. The latest event was held at Hayton Castle shooting ground near Retford. For many of the ladies, who had never lifted a gun, confidence quickly rose under expert coaching. Everyone shot a fair amount of clays. Guns were provided, everyone received a safety briefing and there was a real sense of camaraderie and achievement. These events are not just about the shooting though. After the shooting, homemade quiches, cakes and other tempting treats are washed down with glasses of fizz. The raffle raises funds for Louise's chosen charity, WorkLtd, in Sheffield. Momentum is growing – the next shoot in November is almost sold out already. No special gear is needed, just turn up and get shooting. Check out the Yorkshire Fillies’ Facebook and Twitter pages and get involved.

Kathryn first became a Brownie in 1959, started volunteering as a helper in 1972 before becoming their leader in 1976, and has volunteering ever since.

COMPETITION

Winner Christine Vincent with her daughter-inlaw Lindsey (left) and with staff from RMC Media and My Fathers Heart (below) – and prizes

30 years... we have a winner AFTER MONTHS OF ANTICIPATION AND THOUSANDS OF ENTRIES, A WINNER WAS CHOSEN FOR OUR FABULOUS 30TH ANNIVERSARY WINNER-TAKES-ALL GIVEAWAY. hen Christine Vincent saw the incredible selection of prizes up for grabs in RMC Media’s winner-takesall 30th anniversary competition, she nearly didn’t bother entering. And while she was right to assume that thousands of readers from our range of nine monthly titles would also have a go, she did well to follow her more positive instincts... because hers was the first name out of the hat. Our competition – with 30 superb prizes donated by independent businesses from across the region – has been the centrepiece of RMC Media’s 30th anniversary celebrations this year. The grand finale came when Christine joined us for a champagne reception in the showroom of RMC Media’s media partner, My Fathers Heart, to celebrate her success and see the superb selection of prizes on display. Christine, who lives in Doncaster and is a regular reader of our Eastside magazine, said she was still in a state of shock when she

came along, with her daughter-in-law Lindsey, to collect her prizes. Joining in the celebrations were representatives from RMC Media and My Fathers Heart and Jackie Gill from Bradfield Brewery, who donated 30 bottles of the limited edition Thirty Something ale, brewed specially to celebrate our 30th anniversary. Harriet Coulthard from My Fathers Heart said: “It was lovely for us as a company to be able to host such a happy occasion, and to see Christine so thrilled to receive all those great prizes.” Over the next few months our special winner can look forward to living the high life, thanks to a package of prizes that includes race days, holidays, hotel stays, jewellery, luxurious food and enough fizz to stage a very special celebration party for family and friends. “I get Eastside every month and read it right through. When I saw all those prizes I thought, ‘I’ll never win it, but I’ll give it a go.’ And then when I was told I’d won I couldn’t

believe it. I’ve not been able to sleep, I’m so excited. All the prizes look great and they’ve come just in time for Christmas.” As her good fortune begins to sink in, Christine is already starting to think about which prizes she is going to keep, and which will be shared with family and friends. “I am looking forward to the flights to Guernsey and also staying at The Crown Hotel in Bawtry, which is near where I live, so I am saving that for my birthday,” she said. “I’m going to share most of the prizes with my family. Lindsey is taking her nieces to see Diversity in Leeds, my partner Martin McNicholas and my son-in-law Richard Whitticker will be doing the adventure day at Yorkshire Outdoors and my son, David Glenn Vincent, will have the Bailey bracelet and then the boys will enjoy the 30 bottles of beer between them – I’m keeping the watch from PA Jewellery for myself!” And so she should. Congratulations Christine.

Building bright futures PROGRAMMING, ROBOTICS, DESIGN – LEARNING AT S. ANSELM’S IS HANDS-ON. oding Lego robots with iPads, building dens in the forest, 3D printing Viking chess pieces…from its idyllic Peak District location, S. Anselm’s School is a hotbed of innovative learning. New for the 2016/17 academic year is the Lego® Education Innovation Studio, a freeflowing, imaginative environment focused on giving children a hands-on learning experience. The centre has been filled with state-of-the-art resources to enhance learning, including Lego EV3 and We-Do programming and robotics, Lego architecture, K’Nex and 3D printers. At the centre children can experience inventing, designing and building their own creations, whilst a bank of computers and iPads develop their IT skills. Using iPads, children programme the robots using code, making them move, change direction and light up. As their skills improve, children start to work with more advanced coding, developing essential IT skills. For the younger children, learning is being taken outside the classroom, out into the rural surroundings of the school grounds to with the newly introduced Forest Schools programme. The school has 3 Forest School qualified teachers and, from Year 1, pupils are taken outside for an entirely different learning experience. Instead of traditional subjects, they take part in den making, use tools and create art with nature. “It’s all about working in a different way to the classroom,” said Helen Hunter, one of the S. Anselm’s Forest School teachers. “It is child-centred learning that develops their teamwork skills outside, in a different environment.” Forest Schools focus on a holistic approach to learning - giving children the freedom to grow and develop whilst observing nature. Developed from Scandinavian practices, Forest Schools offers elements of chaos and calm within learning, giving self-esteem, friendship

and life skills a natural environment in which to grow. “All the children are fascinated by it,” said Helen. “It gives them a real sense of achievement, they are able to cope as things become more challenging; it’s a true accomplishment.” As well as contemporary facilities and teaching methods, S. Anselm’s has revamped their curriculum, moving away from the traditional timetable towards topic-based learning from Year 1 through to Year 5. Other than maths, languages and games, all subjects are taught within one topic, with each year group focusing on a new topic each term, culminating in a final project. Liz Scott, Director of Studies, said: “Year 4 are looking at Celts, Romans, Anglo Saxons and Vikings. At the end of this project we are going to put on a concert, for which the children will perform a “life off ”, where each group has to convince the audience of parents they have the best era in which to choose to live. “We are also 3D-printing chess pieces, which will include real characters from Anglo Saxon and Viking history that the children have learnt about. We will then host a chess battle to music composed by the children and film it using stop motion animation.” Peter Phillips, the Headmaster, said: “The creativity used, the focus on imagination, taking learning outside, there are some extraordinary things happening. This is a small, really kind, really caring school, the children feel respected. If a child comes here they really do have an enormous opportunity to fulfil their potential in a can-do environment.” S. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year.

QE £30m Sports Village Elite Sports Academy Awards worth upto £7,000 Day or boarding, upto 100%. Membership costs of Elite Sports Academies for: Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Netball, Rugby, Swimming.

Best results for all PEOPLE AND RELATIONSHIPS ARE THEY KEY TO WILSON FIELD’S SUCCESS. ilson Field managing director Nick Wilson says people and relationships are key to the success of his business, which has celebrated 15 years in business this year. The company, headquartered in Sheffield, but with a network of nationwide offices, was started back in 2001 by Nick Wilson and his father Keith. It has moved with the times and is now the largest independent insolvency practice in Yorkshire, boasting ten insolvency practitioners and over 90 staff – a far cry from its humble beginnings when a handful of staff worked from a small rented office. Nick reinforced that it is the experienced team around him which has helped make the company so strong and resilient in a declining insolvency market. He said: “Over the last 15 years the company has seen turnover more than treble, staff numbers rise as has the volume of business. But the company has also seen terrible times for UK businesses and whole sectors suffer as a result of global recession, national and international competition, increasing energy costs and the banks’ declining ability to lend. Fortunately, that is behind us. “What has remained consistent though is the quality and experience of the staff we have here. Their contacts and relationships

mean so much and that, in turn, brings respect and referrals. “As the company has grown I have had to rely more on my team for the day to day work but I am still heavily involved in the strategy for the business and have a strong management board to bounce ideas off and take advice from. “It certainly has not been dull over the last 15 years. We have seen major changes in technology, new fee structures, and greater transparency and tightening of regulations. The company has invested heavily from a digital perspective and we have recently become a paperless office. Our team here is young, developing and innovative enough to embrace a changing business world. “And to meet the changing needs of our clients we have had to diversify in order to compete and survive, especially when many other competitors have fallen by the wayside. “Wilson Field, which specialises in offering business support, turnaround and refinancing rather than general accountancy services, historically dealt with small and mediumsized businesses. Its reputation has grown to attract larger assignments in the SME sector and administrations of notable nationwide companies ranging from manufacturers to construction companies, hotels to hauliers and coach companies. “With recession behind us, our clients’

needs have changed. We are focussing more on business turnaround and work closely with intermediaries and specialist funders to help businesses to restructure and survive. Growth going forward is expected to come from the secondary finance market and financial reviews as we build our referral base. Historically Wilson Field has grown organically from retained profits which means we are well placed to take advantage of expansion opportunities as they arise. “Our people again are key to this for me. Our professional reputation amongst our business introducers is high and the corporate market continues to be our target, but we are eager to help sole traders and micro businesses with their problems. He added: “It is still going to be difficult in the economy in the next few years and global factors will continue to affect the rate of national recovery. It is too early to tell at the moment how Brexit will affect businesses. “One underlying objective that Wilson Field has had for 15 years is to preserve business and produce the best results for all concerned – our clients and their creditors and employees. “I look forward to seeing this objective continued and seeing what the next 15 years at Wilson Field will bring.” Wilson Field can be contacted on 0114 235 6780. MOTORING

Subtle changes There will be an all-new Seat Leon released in February 2017. The previous Leon was a winner largely due to its distinct, classy look and the new model has followed with this philosophy. It’s not an ‘all-new’ Leon, but an update to the previous model. There are subtle styling changes to the exterior which include redesigned bumpers to make the car look bigger and there’s an injection of brand new and updated technologically as showcased in the Ateca SUV. This includes the likes of traffic jam assist and pedestrian protection assist. It also comes with a new trim level named XCELLENCE which is supposed to give a distinct upmarket feel and there’re a host of new Euro 6 compliant engines available to choose from.

THE NEW YEAR WILL BRING A FLURRY OF NEW MODELS, WRITES JORDAN CUTFORTH. WE TAKE A LOOK AT A LITTLE OF WHAT’S IN STORE.

ALL-NEW A5 Welcome everybody to the all-new Audi A5, a car which took the market by storm with its initial release by in 2007. Available in Coupe and five-door Sportback body styles, the A5 is built on an all-new platform and comes with all the latest technological gadgets you can think of. The Coupe will be available with three diesels and two petrol engines whilst the Sportback will only be available with one petrol and two diesels. Engine ranges from a 187hp 2.0-litre TDI and TFSI to a 249hp 2.0-litre TFSI with all-wheel drive Quattro. There’s also a 3.0-litre TDI with 215hp available too. Alongside the A5 is also the S5 variant. Available in both body designs it’ll come with a 349hp 3.0-litre turbocharged V6.

Championship edition To celebrate the championship win of Marco Wittmann in the DTM Championship, BMW has given their cherished M4 another special edition. Called the DTM Championship Edition, it’ll have top-class motor racing technology for drive and suspension as well as a specific design that mimics the DTM racing cars built by BMW Motorsport. This includes body stripes, a huge boot spoiler and aggressive body styling. Based on the M4 GTS, it gets a 3.0-litre turbocharged watercooled straight-six petrol engine producing 593hp, which is good for a 0-62mph time of 3.8 seconds and a 190mph top speed. Inside, it’s a strict two-seater carbon bucket job with a roll cage to replaces the rear seats. Luxuries include Sat-Nav, air-con, adaptive lights and parking sensors.

Stand-out crowd-pleaser After the release of the newly updated GTR earlier this year, Nissan has revealed the Nismo edition – the flagship in the GTR range. Costing from £149,995, the Nismo will be powered by a more powerful version of the 3.8litre twin-turbo V6 found in regular GTR models, 592hp to be precise. This can be due to the fact that this Nismo engine features technology from the GTR GT3 car. As with all GTR’s, power is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed double-clutch gearbox. With the improved aerodynamic capabilities of this Nismo edition, it produces more downforce than any other Nissan production car to date. And with the more aggressive body kit, it certainly stands out more than any other Nissan production car to date. 104 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

DAVID J. MARTIN A.I.O.C.

The home of quality FROM STUNNING HAND-CRAFTED KITCHENS TO BESPOKE FURNITURE, DAVID J MARTIN’S ATTENTION TO DETAIL PRODUCES BEAUTIFUL RESULTS. n these days of mass produced furniture it seems almost impossible to find beautiful bespoke, handmade pieces, whether that be for your kitchen, bedroom, study or lounge. At David J Martin customers are welcomed into the firm’s on-site workshop, to see their furniture come to life. “People often don’t believe that the workshop is here, under the showroom” said owner David Martin. “Then we bring them downstairs and they’re blown away.” There’s a team of eight, highly trained carpenters working on kitchen cabinets and islands, bedroom furniture, desks and study furniture, each one made unique to order. David himself is a carpenter by trade, training for years before completing a degree in the subject. He ensures his staff are trained to the highest standard, resulting in the finest quality products. Everything at David J Martin happens under one roof, so David himself can check the quality and finish of each product at every stage of the process. “Our attention to detail is second to none and this makes us stand out from the crowd,” said David. “We are not held to ransom by mass-produced products as we make everything from scratch – even down to making our own cutters for producing mouldings.” This means you can add to your kitchen

in years to come and the company will still be able to match the designs. In the David J Martin showroom, a stunning range of kitchens is on display, but the company also produces bespoke furniture for every room in the house. For the bedroom, the company builds beautiful wardrobes, and other unique storage solutions for difficult spaces. For the study, David’s team of carpenters can build desks and media spaces. After an initial customer consultation, when David will discuss budgets and offer expert design advice, the cabinetmakers work from plans drawn by David and create bespoke furniture, which can be sprayed to high gloss or satin finishes using durable Two Pac paint. With larger companies, you will often see doors advertised as having a ‘high-gloss finish’. This means that they are vinylwrapped and, although this does produce a shiny look, it means that you will be able to see the joins. David J Martin’s professional sprayer can apply any colour you wish in their paintspraying booth, giving a modern finish with no joins. That means water cannot seep in and cause peeling – something that can happen with vinyl-wrapped doors. Everything is done in-house, which enables David to guarantee high quality at every stage. For those customers undertaking full refurbishment of their home, David J Martin

can provide a one-stop shop for structural, plumbing and electricity work, as well as building furniture. David said: “We run a building company alongside our bespoke joinery company, so customers are not waiting for plumbers, electricians and so on. We can take care of everything and ensure that the project is completed to the highest standard.” For David it’s all about creating a high quality customer experience, whether the job be big or small. One call to David J Martin could result in a stunning new extension, complete with kitchen, plumbing and electricity – David only employs the best tradesmen. In the company’s 36 years of trading, David J Martin has built a superb reputation for customer satisfaction. The company is highly regarded for their customer and after-sales service, ensuring that every customer is a happy one and fixing any problems with their furniture, whether that be two weeks or ten years down the line.
