Wildlife enrichment

ENRICHMENT experience

Enrichment this term has seen Year 5 and 6 enter ‘The Hall of the Mountain King’.

On a Thursday afternoon, the five forms were split into smaller ensembles which included strings, ukuleles, woodwind and recorders, percussion, piano and guitars. Here they worked in ‘sectionals’ to rehearse a piece of music from Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite. After a productive rehearsal, the children were then brought together to make one big orchestra, which was conducted by some extremely brave volunteers. In just one term, the children learned all the skills required to perform as part of an orchestra.

Other enrichment activities have included Drama where the Year 5s and 6s tackled scripted pieces from Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach and Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. They split into groups and began reading through the pieces before attempting to stage mini versions of the adapted plays.

This half term they are working on their devised pieces for the Summer LAMDA exams. The Year 5’s title is ‘The Visit’ and the Year 6’s is ‘The Text Message’. The pupils work in small groups improvising, devising and improving their pieces ready for performance following the strict criteria that LAMDA put in place for the exam. They really love this exam as they can truly make it their own.

Senior School has used enrichment time to explore games of strategy, compete in a House Maths competition and begin preparations for Year 9’s Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. They have visited the theatre, explored social dilemmas and created resources for younger pupils to use. In the Summer term they have been exploring Chinese culture and language, preparing for formal exams and getting ready to explore the Peak District on Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions.

Back in January, Year 5 and 6 children had a presentation and talk from Jo Elphick, Education Manager from the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation in London (DSWF). This included what it means to be endangered, which particular animals DSWF work to protect, why they need our help and what it is that DSWF is doing to help them. The children were told about the Global Canvas Art and Poetry Competition and how they could help the Foundation by raising money and awareness by entering the competition.

After the talk the children had the choice of collaging either an elephant or a rhino using magazine and newspaper pieces.

“They did this very enthusiastically,“ said Jo Elphick. “I was really amazed by the individual ways that they all went about it.”

After they had finished they began to create a habitat for their finished animals, including features like rivers, trees and grass, they then enjoyed arranging their animals on their habitat background.

“I was impressed with the children’s attention to detail and with their interest in animals. I hope that after this afternoon, the children will have more of an idea about conserving endangered species and the work that entails,” concluded Jo. JO ELPHICK WITH THE CHILDREN

Waddle scores in Boys v Dads match

Sheffield Wednesday and England International star Chris Waddle made a return to football when he joined the annual Westbourne School Boys v Dads match at Goodwin Sports Centre.

The match started very competitively and it was the boys who took an early lead through a calm finish from Oliver Jones.

This early setback only seemed to motivate the Dads, who went on to score four quick-fire goals to go into half-time with a comfortable 4-1 advantage.

The second half started with the Dads scoring another four goals, including a delightful finish from Waddle from 20-yards out.

Despite the score-line, the boys, led by captain Connor Baxter, never gave up and ended the match strongly. Oliver Jones scored a sensational volley from the edge of the area and strong wing-play from Severin Gale led to a third goal for the Boys.

At the final whistle the Dads won the match 8-3 and maintained their winning streak against the boys.

“The game was played in a great spirit throughout,” said Mr Beeby, who captained the Dad’s team.

“I was over the moon with the Dad’s victory and already looking forward to next year’s fixture.”

Girls Football thrives as Westbourne wins 6-1 In the spring term the Year 7 and 8 girls’ football team played their first fixture of the season – a five-a-side match at Goodwin Sports Centre against Sheffield High School. The start of the game was very fast paced and saw Isabel Hardcastle open the scoring within the first five minutes. For the rest of the half, Westbourne were in full control and went in at half time 4-0 up.

Mr Adebola decided to allow the opposition to play with an extra player for the second half, but even with this advantage the Westbourne girls continued to play with confidence and keep the majority of possession. Captain Hannah Richards and Isabel Hardcastle each scored two goals with Chloe Bennett and Abigail Crapper also getting on the score-sheet.

This was an excellent team performance from the Westbourne girls and to have such a strong girls football team from a comparatively small pool only goes to highlight the sporting talent Westbourne has.

County netball success

Victory at Barlborough Hall Football Tournament In January the Under 9 A-team went to Barlborough Hall to participate in the Barlborough Hall Festival. The schools competing in the festival alongside Westbourne were St Peter and St Paul, Nottingham and the hosts, Barlborough Hall. The first match was against St Peter and St Paul in which the boys produced a fine attacking performance, winning the game 6-0. Goals came from captain Luca Cancello and man of the match David Hughes plus Joshua Booth.

The second match was against the hosts Barlborough Hall, with Westbourne again scoring six goals, in a 6-2 victory. Barlborough were a much greater test for the boys, but they stood firm and played some excellent football, led again by Luca Cancello and (man of the match) David Hughes, who both scored fantastic individual goals.

The boys then met Nottingham in the final match and quickly found themselves 3-0 down in the first five minutes. Despite the start, the boys fought valiantly, led by the efforts of man of the match Khaled Alshatti and eventually went down 6-4. Due to Westbourne, Nottingham and Barlborough Hall being on the same points (2 wins and 1 loss) a penalty shootout was undertaken to determine the overall winner. Under pressure, Westbourne won the shootout, with Luca Cancello, David Hughes, Khaled Alshatti and Joshua Booth all taking penalties. Overall, the boys were fully deserving of their victory, giving 100 per cent effort in all their matches and producing some excellent football.

A number of Senior School netball players attended the South Yorkshire Excel Programme netball screening event at the English Institute of Sport. It was a great opportunity for the girls to train with and play against other talented netballers from within South Yorkshire, watched by the attending scouts.

Ailsa Gillespie (Year 9) and Lola Fowler (Year 8) were chosen to join the programme and have been training every Monday evening with the U14 County Netball squad and have represented South Yorkshire in matches against other counties.

Bracing run is more a breeze than a wheeze for Westbourne pupils There’s nothing more bracing than a good run in the fresh air… as pupils discovered as they embarked on the annual Westbourne Wheeze.

The annual sporting challenge, which includes all pupils from Year 3 upwards, was held in two events at the Dore home of Sheffield Tigers Rugby Club.

It was a particularly cold and wet afternoon, making the ground slightly muddy and slippery, but this did not deter the pupils – all it did was make them more determined and ready to challenge themselves over the different terrains.

It was a wonderful and successful event and evident that some pupils were not only determined to win a medal but to finish in one of the top three positions or even set new personal bests.”

Newcomer Lola Fowler received first place out of all the seniors with a time of six minutes and 59 seconds.

There was also a very close result between the Junior School Year 5 pupils Sam Jokhi and Cristina Bayona.

And in the team section, Whitfield House came first overall.

* NB: all pupils from Year 3 to Year 11 have represented their school and have played in a match this term.

ART EXCELLENCE Westbourne has excelled in recent competitions

Top art awards for Nina and Christopher As one of many schools from across Sheffield, Westbourne had over 40 pieces of artwork selected to be displayed in the Sheffield Young Artists exhibition at Ponds Forge.

Congratulations to Nina in Year 2 who won the top prize in the KS1 painting category and to Christopher in Year 6 who won two top awards. He was runner up in KS2 painting and took the top prize in the drawing category.

The exhibition, organised by the Rotary Club of Abbeydale, ran at the Skyline Suite of Ponds Forge in April.

Given that Westbourne School sponsors the drawing category they were delighted that one of their own brought the trophy home! Well done to everyone involved. * Art Club is one of over 50 different clubs and activities on offer at lunchtime and afterschool at Westbourne.

Monkey Business for Poppy in Year 2 Congratulations to Poppy Fletcher in Year 2 – her artwork was selected as KS1 overall winner from schools across Sheffield in the Chinese New Year Art Competition in association with the Confucius Institute at the University of Sheffield. 2016 marks its 13th celebration in the city.

Her prize of a Chinese bamboo scroll was presented to her by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Denise Fox. Well done to all nine of the Westbourne young artists who had their artwork – celebrating the Year of the Monkey – selected and on show in the City Hall Sheffield Ballroom in February.

WESTBOURNE BEAT TOP MATHEMATICIANS AT THE SHEFFIELD HALLAM UNIVERSITY POP MATHS QUIZ 2016

Meet the

WINNERS Westbourne adds up against top mathematicians Year 9, 10 and 11 competed in the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge (IMC), which is run by the UK Mathematics Trust.

In their maths lessons they completed a Mock IMC test and the top achievers were put forward to the national competition. This meant that pupils from Westbourne were competing against the best mathematicians in the country from over 3,000 schools.

Nationally, only the top 40 per cent of these gifted mathematicians received certificates and we were particularly successful with 16 certificates. Anjoli Ashok even went through as one to the top 2,000 and

received a Merit certificate from the International Kangaroo competition. The pupils enjoyed the experience and plan to do even better next year.

Westbourne Junior Mathematicians beat Sheffield Hallam University record Team Westbourne beat top mathematicians from 50 primary schools across Sheffield to win the Sheffield Hallam University Pop Maths Quiz 2016.

Dominating the competition, they managed to create an all-time record in its 21-year history, by achieving a 100 per cent score – winning by some distance. Congratulations to Priya Choker, Abyan Memon, Yunki Lee, Oliver Hardcastle and Thomas Blades.

Watched by their parents from above the atrium of SHU, the hour-long quiz began. Working as a team they tackled a mix of complex mathematical questions that got progressively harder.

“We only got to spend three minutes on each question before moving on to the next. We had only just enough time to work out the answer, get Thomas to check it and for me to write it down!” said Priya.

“I have been involved in the pop maths quiz for the last three years,“ said Yunki Lee. ”I was so happy and proud to win with such a clear lead this time, especially after finishing joint first last year and then being beaten in the tie break by a question that was down to estimation.”

“It is such a monumental achievement for the team to win against a vast array of other schools and with a perfect score of 100 per cent. It was great for them to participate in maths in a university setting and to experience such enthusiasm for the subject,“ said Mr Tedcastle, Deputy Head of Westbourne Junior School. * Westbourne School offers a Maths Masterclass which is open to Year 5 and Year 6 pupils from local primary schools.

Winners of the AMP Awards 2016 Westbourne’s team, Absolute Zero, won the final of the AMP Awards 2016.

This is the first year they have entered the competition. The school band ‘Pablo and the Vultures’ – Isaac Vohra, Niamh Donovan, Dylan Harris and Owen Dalton – performed brilliantly to come in a very respectable third place. This is quite an achievement considering they were competing against schools from across Sheffield, including sixth forms with pupils studying music at A level. Even more spectacular was the ‘Dragons Den’ performance from ‘Absolute Zero’ – the business team of Harriet Mellor Year 11, Hazel Joel, Anushka Reddish and Abigail Heywood (all from Year 10) who were supporting the band.

AMP Awards is a competition that involves thousands of students from across Yorkshire inspiring them to bring out their business skills, as well as encouraging them to get creative with their musical talents. The AMP Awards presents

an authentic, exciting business challenge and a platform for live, original performance, enabling young people to discover and evidence skills, increase confidence and grow strong and collaborative cross community networks.

Hazel, Abi, Anushka and Harriet managed to pull off an amazing victory – they raised over £500, sold raffle and show tickets, organised a custard pie fundraising competition, organised the merchandising for the show, created and uploaded a video and also introduced the band!

This was a great achievement.

GREASE is the word

Westbourne’s young actors and singers have made quite the impression over recent months. pring wasn’t quite over before students started dreaming about ‘Summer Nights’.

Grease was the word as Westbourne presented their very own version of one of the world’s bestloved musicals.

Following on from the success of shows like Oliver, Annie and The Wizard of Oz, Grease took to the stage for a sell-out performance at Sheffield’s Montgomery Theatre in March.

It was a chance to rediscover the magic of the classic comic love story of innocent Sandy and bad boy Danny, the T Birds and the Pink Ladies and a host of hit songs including Hopelessly Devoted To You, Beauty School Dropout, Greased Lightning and

THE MUSIC STRINGS WORKOUT GROUP

Raising the roof at Yellow Arch Studios On Wednesday 21 October Westbourne rocked the roof at the Yellow Arch Studios. The eagerly anticipated Gig Night was a huge success with staff, students and parents joining together to support the performers.

The Year 5 band kicked off proceedings with an energetic set followed by bands, soloists and duets from a wide range of stars in the making. Staff and students came together throughout the night with some great performances highlighting how much talent and confidence Westbourne musicians have.

The school thanked their Music Department and peripatetic music staff for their time, commitment and continual support not just for the fantastic performances on the night but for the excellent music provision at Westbourne.

Top musician leads music ensemble workshop In February 2016, a String Ensemble Workshop led by Lucy Revis was hosted at Westbourne School. This was a workshop for string players of any level aged 7-21 where each pupil was placed in carefully planned ensembles to suit their ability. Some already formed groups were coached on a new or previously learned repertoire.

The workshop ran from 10am to 4pm and included coaching and a masterclass in group performance, ensemble rehearsal technique and repertoire interpretation. At the end of this exciting day, all groups involved got the opportunity to perform to parents and friends in an informal concert.

Staff comprised experienced musicians and teachers, including head of strings Morven Bryce. Morven was previously the leader of the Tippett Quartet with whom she toured internationally and broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

Since 2002 she has appeared as Guest Concertmaster with ensembles such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Concert and BBC Ulster Orchestra. Morven has also performed as Guest Principal with The London Philharmonic Orchestra, The Philharmonic Orchestra and The Academy of St Martin’s in the Field.

WestbourneNEWS Westbourne pupils take to the slopes for annual ski trip Pupils at Westbourne School proved they’re as much at home on the slopes as they are in the classroom when they took part in their annual ski trip.

Folgarida, in the Italian Dolomites, was the destination for the party of 73 – including more junior school pupils than ever before – with bright blue skies and good snow making it the perfect conditions for the daily visits to the slopes.

And at the end of the week pupils Meg Coleman and Felipe Russo scooped the most improved skiers award.

“Once again this proved to be one our most successful out of school activities,” said Nigel Elvidge, Director of Sport at Westbourne. “More than a dozen parents accompanied the party too and there was a great atmosphere throughout the trip, with all the different age groups, young and old, generating new relationships and looking out for each other, which is an enormous part of what being part of the Westbourne family is all about.”

Plans are now already in place for the school’s 2017 ski trip, which will visit Wagrain in the Austrian Alps. * There are an abundance of extracurricular trips on offer at Westbourne, including a language trip to Cantabria, a sports tour to Lanzarote and a planned trip to Africa.

You’d expect a BBC reporter to ask some tough questions… but Junior School pupils were more than ready to meet the challenge of being interviewed by BBC Radio Sheffield presenter Paulette Edwards.

Paulette visited Westbourne as part of her Saturday morning radio ‘Kids’ Talk’ slot and asked the Year 4 pupils questions on everything from Vladimir Putin to the importance of looking smart.

“Our children all had a great time and gave some really interesting answers to Paulette’s questions,” said Year 4 form tutor Mrs Paul.

Westbourne Bed Race It was hardly Formula One… but you’d be surprised how much speed a shopping trolley masquerading as a bed can generate when the cause is a good one!

During a morning break last term, the annual Great Westbourne Bed Race took to the track with every participant determined to raise as much cash as possible for the school’s charity of the year, Sheffield Young Carers.

The qualifying stage saw Team Shinee – pupils Elliott Renshaw, Henri Corran, Sohail Manavi and Matthew Baxter – win their three races.

And The All Blacks – pupils Tommy Heath, Greg Shahane, Patrick Lee and Ben Forrester – also muscled to victory.

Controversy marked the semi-finals, though, as lane discipline went to the dogs and as high spirits took over, Team Shinee faced a shock disqualification.

The final between The All Blacks and The Year 9 girls – Georgina Heywood, Emma Verity, Marisa Ali and Ailsa Gillespie – went to a photo finish, with a decision that the boys won by four inches.

But proving that everyone’s a winner in this sort of race, Caitlin Sulivan, Hannah Jenkinson, Josephine Paul and Maisie Foster won applause for their fantastic onesie outfits.

And the real winners were Sheffield Young Carers, who saw the event raise £168.75 for their valuable work in the community.

Scholarship exams

Westbourne makes a storm on the catwalk In February Charlie Lilly Clothing presented their Spring Collection at a busy Fashion Show organised by Friends of Westbourne, raising just under £300 in support of the school’s Charity of the Year 2016.

Guests were treated to a glass of Prosecco and nibbles on arrival before being delighted with a fun, action-packed show presented by five volunteer models.

Introduced by Director of Sports Mr Nigel Elvidge, first to the stage was the spring collection, followed by formal dresses, a funky festival summer look and casual leisure wear.

“Thank you once again for organising such a great event and for allowing us to use it to promote our work,” said Katie Borland, Director of Funding and External Relations, Sheffield Young Carers. “We really do feel quite overwhelmed by everyone’s support at Westbourne.”

Congratulations to all 23 candidates who entered Westbourne’s scholarship exams in January. The standard of the results was, as expected from such a talented group, very high and Westbourne was delighted to announce that two Westbourne pupils were successful.

Rosie Molyneux was awarded the All-rounder (with music) Scholarship and Yunki Lee won the Academic (with music) Scholarship.

This January saw a record number of external applicants applying to join Westbourne through the scholarship route. Entrants came from a wide range of schools including Dobcroft, Dore, Dronfield, Loxley, Ashdell, Birkdale and Mylnhurst – further evidence of the high regard in which Westbourne is held.

Westbourne is delighted to have been able to award four scholarships to external candidates and look forward to them joining Year 7 in September.

Congratulations are also due to Dylan Harries and Head Boy Joe Peckett in Year 11, who have both been awarded scholarship places to Birkdale School for Sixth Form study. Dylan for Academic and Joe for Sport.
