The family friend THE HYDE PARK INN IS A PROPER LOCAL WITH A WELCOME FOR EVERYBODY, SAYS PHOEBE SEYMOUR. ou know you’re in a proper local when the customers are welcomed like old friends. From my vantage point in a cosy corner of The Hyde Park Inn, I could see owners Tom and Vee doing the rounds as though greeting guests at their very own house party. Looking around at the families with their children entertained by colouring books and crayons, and with the odd dog in tow, it was easy to see why the pub won Best Family Friendly at the Westside Restaurant of the Year Awards 2017. As this was a Sunday, Tom was also manning the carvery with its wide selection of turkey, beef, gammon, pork and lamb, whilst wife Vee was in the kitchen personally prepping the other items on their specials board and Sunday menu. After a half of Farmers Blonde (£1.70) for me and a Coke for him (£1.40), my partner ordered the carvery (£8.95). Having recently gone veggie, I was impressed to find they did a vegetarian option with a stuffed pepper in place of the meats. However, there were plenty more tempting

options besides so I chose the mozzarella sticks (£4.95) as a starter from the specials board and a vegetarian burger (£6.85) as my main from the Sunday menu. Though he had a hearty meal on the way, my partner couldn’t resist trying a couple of my stringy mozzarella sticks in a crunchy coating accompanied by a complementary cranberry dip, conjuring up some Christmas flavours. Seeing my partner return with a plate full of beef, both boiled and roast potatoes, vegetables, crowned with a Yorkshire pudding and topped off with thick gravy, filled me with envy, but as my spicy bean burger arrived, all was well. The patty was filled with spicy tomato sauce and was encased in a toasted bun, while the cooling coleslaw was a welcome accompaniment, as were the chunky chips. For dessert, my partner had a pub classic – a light and fluffy syrup sponge pudding (£3.95) with a scoop of Bradwell’s vanilla ice cream and I had the apple tartlet (£4.25) – also with a scoop of ice cream. As we were leaving, the sun was shining
and there were just as many families outside on the decking gazing at the gorgeous green hills in the distance and enjoying their pints, proving The Hyde Park Inn has a fantastic atmosphere, whatever the season. aving struggled with a bad back
2015, Lesley Flint was H since diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis, and, in February 2016, she was told she needed a lumbar disk removing. Following a routine operation, the pain continued to get worse, and, in August 2016 another scan showed Lesley was suffering with a thoracic disk, which was almost cutting through the nerves in her spine. Lesley underwent a complex operation to remove the disk, and was told she would be able to walk again within six months, but further complications led to Lesley remaining in hospital until the end of January 2017, and in the run up to Christmas, she received the heart-breaking news that she would be paralysed from the waist down for the rest of her life. “It turned our lives upside down,” says Lesley, who lives in Inkersall, Chesterfield. “When you’re in hospital all you want to do is go home to your own bed, or sit in your own armchair. Then the realisation comes that you can’t do any of those things, and that you are going to go home, but you won’t be able to go upstairs. “Initially, we turned the dining room into a bedroom, and, as part of our plans to make living a bit easier, we wanted to turn it into a wet room, with just a small bedroom extension – which, with little financial support from the NHS or the council, was just about all we could afford.” Lesley now requires fulltime care, most of which is

Then the realisation comes that you can’t do any of those things, and that you are going to go home, but you won’t be able to go upstairs.” provided by her husband John, and a nursing visit every morning to help with bodily functions, as well as two carer visits each day. “Lesley has not had a shower at home for 11 months and is desperate to get an accessible wet room that enables her to be able to shower and wash her hair at home,” says John. “Currently, she has to visit Staveley Centre for a bath once a week, and she has no real privacy in her bedroom – we share the house with our daughter and her boyfriend and certain times of day he can’t walk through because Lesley is being taken care of.” When Roger Bird of GreenBird Properties heard the couple’s story, he knew he had to help, and, with the support of the local and wider community, he has pledged to transform the home in a DIY SOS-style makeover, at no cost. Around 70 contractors have offered products and services to help GreenBird with the build, and, with more than 200,000 people wanting to help, Roger has set up a JustGiving page. Although Roger has pledged to do the job at no cost to the couple, he doesn’t expect people to work for free, and believes £28,000 would help give Lesley and John an extension much more suited to the their needs, compared to the plans the budget originally allowed. “When I said I’d do it for free I
meant no cost to Lesley and John, and I’ll not take anything out of it myself, but I don’t expect other people to give up their wage, because they simply can’t afford it,” he says. “I can’t put a solid plan in place right now, because the funds will allow us to do so much, and we haven’t raised all the money yet. “If someone gave us a pot of money and told us to build what is best for Lesley and John, we’d cancel the original plans and get a new set of drawings. It’s a question of whether we can raise the money to do what I want to do, which is take the extension to the end of the house, make the building more accessible, and, most importantly, do the job properly.” National firms such as Build Base have already pledged to supply materials for the build, and a number of contractors have offered to provide services. To help raise funds, Roger is hoping to find support from larger corporations, and has contacted a national bank to ask for help. He’s also hoping the local community will pledge support.

The spectacular scenery of Royal Portrush Golf Course
NORTHERN IRELAND REMAINS LARGELY UNDISCOVERED FOR HOLIDAY GOLFERS – BUT THAT’S ALL ABOUT TO CHANGE, WRITES JOHN MURPHY. olf clubs all over the world have
in common when it G something comes to parking arrangements. It’s not surprising nor illogical: officials of the club, whether they be board members, captains or presidents have allocated parking bays in the club car park. Normally small plaques in the club’s livery reserve the parking space with the words: “Secretary”, “Captain” clearly displayed. In 2012 I had the pleasure and privilege to visit Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. As our car turned into the car park we saw the various reserved bays. At the end, near the clubhouse there was one highly unusual and remarkably different reserved space: the plaque merely stated: “Open Champion.” Remember, Royal Portrush is the home to one of Northern Ireland’s heroes: the genial Darren Clarke, former Ryder Cup Captain, and this was the year after he had conquered the elements at Royal St. George’s to claim the Claret Jug. The plaque said a lot about the club, its membership and the people we met in the province. Classy, understated but possessing of a fierce pride in what their sons and daughters have achieved on the world stage. In fact Northern Ireland has a wealth of riches in the golfing department: Darren Clarke, Rory Mcllory and Graeme McDowell bestride the game like the legendary giants 42 Southside | www.southsidemagazine.co.uk
who in folklore built the nearby Giants Causeway. So how is it that the origins of these greats are concentrated in such a small area? The answer may be obvious: their golfing education was forged in this hotbed of golfing tradition and heritage where some of the world’s best courses are shoe-horned on to a rugged and breathtakingly beautiful peninsular. The elements take no prisoners in this part of the world and Darren Clarke’s victory in 2011 will always be remembered for his ability to play crunching long irons into a ferocious wind that was the hallmark of the Open that year. A skill no doubt honed at his home club and at the nearby links courses of Portstewart, Castlerock and Ballycastle. It’s no wonder that the “Welcome to Portrush” sign proclaims that it is the “Major Golf Capital of the World “ – a wonderfully Irish play on words as the sign lists its two Open winners (Fred Daly 1947 and Darren Clarke) and its US Open winner Graeme McDowell (2010). This part of the world is now very much in the golfing focus with Portstewart having staged the Irish Open this year, won by the Spaniard Jon Rahm, and the Open coming to Royal Portrush in 2019. The decision to choose Portrush was highly significant, the club being the only one outside England and Scotland selected to host the famous event, and it last did so nearly 70 years ago in 1951.

Royal Portrush is a test for any golfer

I was lucky enough to be able to return to Portrush earlier this year as part of a visit by journalists to assess progress towards the Open in two years’ time. The Open Champion plaque may have gone but the glorious scenery and majesty of Portrush were still gleaming in the watery sun. A vast expanse of green beyond and around the clubhouse awaits the visitor, not dissimilar to the initial view of St Andrews. A concrete starting hut frames the first tee and in the stillness of an early Irish morning it’s difficult to imagine the cacophony that will greet the world’s finest stroke-makers in two years’ time. The course is hailed by many (including this humble hacker) as the best they have played on. Every hole is memorable and the scenery simply stunning. It would be a pleasure to just walk the course without touching a club. The views across thundering seas and sheer cliffs are mesmerising. The Championship Dunluce Course, originally designed by the same Harry Colt responsible for the Hallamshire course in Sheffield, is undergoing major changes in advance of the Open, most notably the moving of two holes from the Valley Course to make new seventh and eighth holes and the removal of existing holes 17 and 18. An underground tunnel is also being built to manage player and spectator traffic around the course. Despite the ongoing course work, our round was as enjoyable as the one five years ago. The hole that lingers longest in the memory is the fifth, White Rocks, with its green perched on the edge of cliffs with a sheer drop to the beach below. Long hitters can take on driving the green on this dog-leg downhill par 4, despite being just over 400
yards long, by angling a shot right of the fairway, between a menacing sand dune and a ravine of brambles and weeds. My crowd, with the exception of our one-handicapper maestro, were tempted until raw fear on top of the gusty tee gripped us and intimidated us into yellow-livered shots. The sense of intimidation merely increases when you’re on the next tee. An uphill par 3 of 191 yards off the Championship tees, with a ravine cutting in from the right and normally into the wind. The driver’s ball flight and length resembled a nine iron’s. It’s no wonder that they’re making absolutely no changes to this monstrous hole for the Open. Just down the round from Portrush is the impressive Portstewart club, comprising the Strand and the Riverside Courses. The Strand has all the traits of a true Irish links with mounded fairways set tight into the dunes and lightning fast, undulating greens framed by that stunning scenery of grass, sea and sky. Ironically and with no diminishing of the rest of the course, the first hole is the standout one. Widely acknowledged as the finest opening hole in Ireland, perhaps Europe, you are challenged to drive from an elevated tee down between two dunes that frame a narrow fairway which sweeps away to a duneprotected green on the right. In my experience golfers rarely consider Northern Ireland as a destination. These two courses plus other notable ones, such as Ballyliffin, just over the border in Donegal prove what a mistake that is. Try and play them before they become even more well known in two years’ time, when just maybe a sprinkling of Irish magic will mean a car park space being reserved once again for one of the Province’s famous sons.

Pulling power Entry level Ferrari Say hello to the Ferrari Portofino, Ferrari’s all-new open-top grand tourer. Taking the place of the California T in the Ferrari range as the company’s ‘entry level’ supercar, the Portofino has some hefty responsibility on its hands. With an all-new chassis laying under an all-new more aggressive and purposeful design philosophy, the Portofino is much more than just a face-lifted California T. Powered by the same 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8, power has been boosted to 592hp which gets the car from 0124mph in 10.8 seconds. It’s 80kg lighter than the California T and it boasts a larger boot too. The cabin is much improved and is set inline with the cabin from the GTC4 Lusso with the new 10.2-inch touchscreen and newly designed steering wheel.

The brand-new Audi RS4 Avant was revealed to the world at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. As with the previous incarnation of the RS4, this generation model will only be available in estate form, leaving the RS5 to occupy the more sport-orientated market. Unlike the previous RS4, which boasted a high-revving naturally aspirated V8, the new RS4 is powered by a 2.9-litre biturbo V6 making 444 bhp and 442.5 lb ft of torque, an increase of 124.4 lb ft over the previous model. The interior of the RS4 is impeccable. It’ll come with the company’s infamous ‘virtual cockpit’ arrangements and built with a fit and finish only the Germans can achieve. Transmission is an eight-speed auto job with Quattro all-wheel drive. Prices start from £61,625.

FIVE ALIVE After the launch of the Mondeo back in 2015, Ford has now decided to update the line-up to its flagship businessman’s express. The latest Mondeo range will now have a new sports and luxury specification. In short the Mondeo range will drop from seven trim levels to only five. Starting off at £19,445 we have the Zetec Edition, then there’s the ST-Line both existing and new trim level, then we have the Titanium Level and the range-topping Vignale. As standard, all five models have navigation, DAB, autonomous braking to mitigate or avoid low-speed collisions at under 31mph, front/rear parking sensors and cruise control with speed limiter. ST-Line features lowered sports suspension and an enhanced sporty look with Titanium introducing premium leather heated seats.

Chesterfield Scouts heading for the 2019 International Jamboree Six scouts from Chesterfield have worked hard to gain a place at the 2019 International Jamboree in West Virginia. The boys, who’ve been awarded the Chief Gold Scout Award are wanting to give back what they’ve learnt to the local scouting community and inspire more young people to achieve their goals. The boys now need to raise £25,000 between them to complete their quest to the World Scout Jamboree. The boys aged between 14 and 15 years are at the forefront of the fund raising, are committed to their goal and determined to succeed. Global Brand’s Steve Perez buys back the hotel his late father founded Derbyshire entrepreneur Steve Perez has bought a hotel and restaurant that was originally set up by his father and where he learnt valuable business lessons working as a waiter and chef, having left the business 40 years ago. "When I heard the Red Lion was possibly up for sale I knew I had to seize the opportunity,” says Steve. “I have many fond memories there and learnt the foundations of business from my father, which have helped me throughout my career". The month-long celebration aims to not only raise awareness of the thriving sector and its local presence, but also to inspire the next generation of manufacturing and engineering careers. With £1billion of investment on the horizon for Chesterfield, this month is vital in

Chesterfield will not fully benefit from the progress being achieved on its major developments during the coming year, Peak Resort, Waterside, HS2 line and depot, and Markham Vale, unless it has a skilled and ready workforce ready to construct and service these developments. That means we must turn our attention now to get young people interested in engineering and manufacturing It iss a difficult sell. Young people these days are all about digital technologies, but one of the things we aim to show during the many events held during Made in Chesterfield, is the variety of jobs and roles available in other industries. In actual fact, the digital industry plays a key role in the manufacturing and engineering sector. The historic image of manufacturing and engineering being heavy, dirty, even low paid work couldn’t be further from the truth in today’s modern industry- the Made in Chesterfield event is crucial in showcasing this. That’s why companies such as Urban Flamingo, Paul Mossman Pottery and Brampton Brewery, are involved in the schools programme, as well as more traditional organisations like Penny Hydraulics, MSE Hiller and United Cast Bar. The past and the future complement each
