Autohaus Dolby can service everything from VW campervans to modern hybrid cars
Enjoy a drink while you wait
Positive vibes TAKING GREAT PRIDE IN THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE, NEWLY-EXTENDED AUTOHAUS DOLBY IS PERFECTLY PLACED TO SERVICE YOUR VOLKSWAGEN GROUP VEHICLE. ou may choose a car based on your lifestyle, or perhaps you trust a particular make or model. But it is just as important to find a garage that fully understands and uses the correct equipment for your vehicle. If you drive a Volkswagen, Audi, Seat or Skoda, help is at hand. Autohaus Dolby only work on Volkswagen group cars and vans and provide the sort of brand-specific knowledge you’d expect from a franchised dealer, only at independent prices. Established ten years ago by Matt Dolby, this independent business offers a comprehensive service for Volkswagen owners, tailored to their specific vehicle. The staff at Autohaus Dolby have specialist knowledge of the brand and pride themselves on their friendly and approachable service. “Out of everything we do, our major service with comprehensive service checklist is the most popular and helpful thing we
The newly-extended premises
offer our customers and it’s testament to what Autohaus Dolby is all about,” says Matt. “Customer service and creating more positive and personal relationships with our customers is just as important to us. They’re not isolated from the person who works on their vehicle so they can really get a good understanding of what goes into keeping it in great shape.” The garage, based within easy reach of Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley at Century Street Industrial Estate, has a cosy office where you can help yourself to a coffee and talk to a member of their team. The garage also recently had an extension and can now cater for even more vehicles. Autohaus Dolby uses Volkswagen’s own service schedule, original equipment parts and specialised equipment to deal with any VW group model. Working alongside Aran Haigh and Al Crookes, whose knowledge of such vehicles is second to none, Matt and the team

aim to provide a service to exceed all expectations. “We’re a small, friendly business and we make every effort to be easy to deal with. We do a proper job, offer a more personal service than the dealer and we are considerably cheaper,” adds Matt. “Even the tools we use are specially designed for Volkswagen group vehicles. All modern cars need modern equipment and we are always up to date in that department.” Matt and his team are happy to repair or service everything from old split screen VW campervans, to the latest car models, but they are also moving with the trends of tomorrow too. The team are now taking on turbo-diesel and hybrid vehicles. A fast charging service is available for all Autohaus customers. A minor service starts from £99 and a major service is from £169 including VAT, parts and labour and timing belt and water pump changes, with all genuine Volkswagen parts at £346 for the vast majority of vehicles. Another thing that makes Autohaus stand out from the crowd, is the option to drive away in a free Volkswagen courtesy car, so that you can continue your day as normal. Strictly come dining! THERE’S A NEW LOOK TO THE 2018 SOUTHSIDE & WESTSIDE RESTAURANT & BAR AWARDS – AND WE NEED YOUR HELP. he search is on for the finest dining and drinking establishments across Sheffield and North Derbyshire, as we launch the 2018 Southside & Westside Restaurant and Bar Awards. This year’s event is bigger and better than ever with an additional focus on the region’s blossoming drinking scene, and new categories to encompass the welcome recent explosion of micro-pubs and wine bars. We are also looking for a much greater involvement from Southside readers, as we ask them to help us make the big decisions in all the major categories. As in previous years we’ll be revealing all the winners at Baldwins Omega. It will be the end of an era for this legendary Sheffield banqueting venue which closes for the final time a few weeks after our awards dinner on Monday 4 June. We know that standards of food and

service will be as high as ever and before we search for a new venue for next year’s event we’re determined to make this last farewell at Baldwins our biggest and best awards dinner yet. Last year’s big winners were The Samuel Fox Country Inn who scooped two prizes on the night – Best Contemporary Restaurant and the coveted Restaurant of the Year. Now the search is on again to find the venues that have truly excelled in the art of delivering delicious food and beverages in a superlative setting. All our recent award winners have been superb, so expectations are high. Here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners: to make sure your establishment is under consideration for the big prizes in 2018, contact Southside publishing manager Sally-Anne Sharp: email@example.com.
WESTSIDE RESTAURANT & BAR AWARDS
Southside readers… get involved We want you to join us in making sure our final verdict is a true reflection of what paying customers across the region really think. Southside’s team of reviewers will be out and about, checking out established and new venues, and searching for the best the region has to offer. We will bring our own opinions to bear of course, but we also know Southside readers are a discerning bunch who travel the region to experience the best restaurants, bistros, pubs and wine bars. That’s why for 2018 we are changing our judging criteria, to give our readers a bigger say. After we have done the rounds of the
region’s finest eateries we’ll be publishing our shortlist of the best venues in all categories, from best contemporary restaurant to best pub. Once the shortlists are revealed, we’ll be asking our readers to have their say on the best in each category. We’ll add up the reader votes, put them with our judges’ own views and come up with the best of the best. Sounds a bit like how the voting works on Strictly Come Dancing, doesn’t it? OK, this is Southside’s version of Strictly Come Dining! That comes later in the year… we’ll be publishing our shortlists and telling our readers how they can get involved in the June issue of Southside.
JOIN OUR JUDGING PANEL We also want to give Southside readers a voice on the independent judging panel that decides the ultimate prize – the Restaurant of the Year. The search is on to find one reader to join with our other judges, all chosen for their knowledge of food and their passion for dining out on the Southside scene, to eat together at the three venues that are shortlisted for Restaurant of the Year. You can leave your credit cards at home; all we want is your opinions. And you will need to clear your diary for a few dates later this year when we bring the judges together to dine out and make their choices. Does this opportunity tickle your tastebuds? To apply for a place on our judging panel, please email the editor, Chris Wilson, at firstname.lastname@example.org and tell him in no more than 150 words what qualities you think the judges should be looking out for in the search for Southside & Westside’s Restaurant of the Year.

Seafood special FISH FIGURES PROMINENTLY ON A MENU THAT PROVES THE TICKLED TROUT HAS UPPED ITS GAME, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. aving grown up in and around pubs, and then served his restaurant apprenticeship working alongside Michelin-starred high flyers such as Gordon Ramsey and Marcus Wareing, Chris Mapp was always ideally suited to the tricky balancing act that involves simultaneously running a gastro pub and a restaurant. After a very successful last few years as chef patron at the Tickled Trout in Barlow, it seems Chris feels confident enough to ring the changes, and the recently revised menu looks decidedly more gastro than pub. The excellent selection of real ales is still there, and while steak and chips is off the menu, if you do fancy a good old carb-loaded plate of comfort food, burgers, pies and pizzas will satisfy that need. But elsewhere there are some lovely, flamboyant touches on a very wellconstructed menu that will appeal to seafood lovers in particular. The Tickled Trout is a versatile venue; there’s a lovely sunny conservatory as well as the restaurant, but on a bitterly cold Saturday lunchtime with sleet lashing the windows we bagged a seat in the lounge close to the roaring log fire. We began by sharing a portion of lightly fried whitebait with a pot of tartare sauce for dunking (£7.95). This is a dish I’ve fallen out with over recent years, but memories of too
much greasy batter and not enough seafood fragrance were banished by this lovely appetiser. For starters I selected one of the new dishes labelled as ‘something special’, a bold claim that was justified with a flourish. Cornish cod brandade (£8.50) was a quail’s egg covered in cod, fried in the crispiest breadcrumbs and served with a light curry sauce and seaweed. On looks alone this dish was a stunner, and cutting into it revealed a perfectly runny yolk, and a heavenly combination of tastes and textures. Our other starter of arancini (£7.95) was a real crowd-pleaser, with crisp parmesan risotto squares and truffle mayonnaise. Two seafood main courses really played to the Tickled Trout’s strengths. The Cornish catch of the day (£17.50) was a dazzling concoction of sea bass fillets, dashi foam, samphire, mushrooms, mussels, roasted fennel and dauphinoise. From the fresh flakes of white fish to the crispy skin and intensely savoury foam, this was cooking of the highest order. The Looe day boat fish (£17.95) was equally complex, perfectly balanced and a joy to eat. Cod, butternut squash, brown shrimps and Fowey mussels worked together beautifully. A portion of salty skinny fries (£3) may have seemed out of place in such high class company but we thought we’d best
check the basics were not being neglected. With such a strong emphasis on fish you’d expect a good selection of white wines and a fresh and fruity Picpoul Plo D’isabelle (£7.95 large glass) was the ideal choice to accompany this seafood spectacular. Desserts included one of my all-time favourites, caramelised apple tarte tatin (£11.95 to share) and the Tickled Trout version, served with clotted cream and vanilla ice cream, was as sticky, salty-sweet, chewy and moreish as I could have wished for. The Tickled Trout has really upped its game and if you like high end cuisine in a relaxed, friendly setting, it must rank among the very best. YOUNG CHEF OF THE YEAR
Last year’s judges (L-R): Mick Burke, Natasha Holland, Stefan Rose and John Murphy
Last year’s winner Dave Cockerill collects his award from Howard Middleton (left) and Jonathan Coulthard from My Fathers Heart (right)
Cooking for their futures DO YOU KNOW A YOUNG CHEF DESTINED FOR THE TOP? WE’RE ON THE LOOK-OUT FOR CATERING’S NEXT BRIGHT YOUNG THING AND WILL BE HOSTING A SHOWROOM SHOWDOWN AT MY FATHERS HEART. alling all head chefs and restaurateurs... do you have a bright spark working in your kitchen who is shaping up to be an outstanding chef of the future? If you do, now’s the time to shout about it, because Westside and My Fathers Heart are staging a fantastic competition to find the Young Chef of the Year 2018. The competition is open to all restaurants in the Sheffield and North Derbyshire region and all entries must be under the age of 25 on 1 June 2018. Four finalists will be invited to join us for a MasterChef-style cooking competition in the state-of-the-art kitchens at My Fathers Heart on Saturday 12 May. That’s their opportunity to create their signature main course, which will be judged by a panel of culinary experts. My Fathers Heart, designers and makers of the region’s finest bespoke, handmade kitchens, bedrooms and furniture, regularly host glamorous events in its award-winning showroom. It proved to be the perfect venue to stage our inaugural Young Chef of the Year event in 2017. The cream of the region’s young culinary talent came together and really wowed the judges with some first rate, inventive virtuoso cooking. Entries have already started coming in from young hopefuls across the city and we are putting out panel of judges together now. Once again our judging panel will be headed by a legend of the Sheffield restaurant world,
Mick Burke. Mick taught thousands of college students the fine art of cooking in his role as senior chef lecturer at Sheffield College. He retired last year after 37 years during which he passed on his skills to generations of young chefs who went on to have great careers in the kitchens of some of the finest restaurants in the land. The Westside/My Fathers Heart Young Chef of the Year competition is a great opportunity to shine a light on the next generation of kitchen superstars. We’re looking forward to seeing what the best young talent out there has to offer, and giving all four finalists, a boost by placing them in the spotlight. The results will be announced at the Westside Restaurant Awards on Monday 5 June 2018, an event which is fast becoming the Oscars of the local restaurant scene. So now it’s down to the head chefs and restaurateurs across the region to nominate their young kitchen stars for this prestigious event. We’ll be contacting restaurants across the region in the next few weeks, reminding head chefs and restaurateurs to get involved. But don’t wait to be invited. If you employ a bright young chef with the talent and drive to reach the top, let us know. Incidentally, last year’s shortlist of talented young kitchen stars was all-male. We know there are some fantastic female chefs out there so please help us to put them in the spotlight in 2018.

MEET THE CHEF
MEET THE CHEF HARD WORK IS HIGH ON THE AGENDA FOR THESE LOCAL CHEFS. RACHEL MARTIN FINDS OUT THE SECRET TO THEIR SUCCESS.
The Peacock Inn Cutthorpe Andy Clark: Head Chef I have worked at the Peacock Inn for four years, serving up a range of food varying from pub classics, such as beer-battered cod chunk, to modern British food like the brisket and marrowbone suet pudding. Before I came to the Peacock, I was the head chef at the Dragons Fold restaurant in Chesterfield, having studied catering at college after leaving secondary school and falling in love with every aspect of it. I was inspired by my grandmother, who was a fabulous cook, she taught me a lot of the techniques that I still use to this day and I love coming up with new dishes. On a normal day in the kitchen, we all arrive around 9.30am to prep for service, which starts at midday, and we have a fantastic team, so everything is completed to a very high standard. My advice to aspiring chefs: if you have a strong work-ethic, a creative mind-set and positive attitude, you’ll go far in this industry. The opportunities are brilliant and I’d happily recommend it to anyone. School Hill, Cutthorpe, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, S42 7AS Tel: 01246 563669 / www.thepeacockcutthorpe.co.uk
The Tickled Trout Jack Butler: Sous Chef I started out in my career as a kitchen porter at Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium, before catching the chef ‘bug’ and working in various restaurants and hotels. I took to being a chef naturally, enjoying the artistic creative side but also the old school tough love military side of learning. And I love the ability to travel, meet new chefs and share their stories and recipes. As well as having the freedom to express yourself and watch people enjoy your creations. A typical working day for me starts by taking notes of any incoming deliveries or those to be placed, greeting all the staff and grabbing a cup of tea. Then it’s straight into prep for the day ahead. My advice to aspiring chefs: work hard, listen a lot and learn from your mistakes – you will make them, but it is all part of the fun. I’m also a keen reader of top chef and foodie books and find it very rewarding as it gives you a marker to drive towards. Learn from them, open your ideas, and remember, every chef draws on influences from other chefs. It’s a sharing community. 33 Valley Road, Baslow, S18 7SL Tel: 0114 289 1111 / www.tickledtroutbarlow.com 22 Southside | www.southsidemagazine.co.uk

OUR WINNER Tesco Finest Salted Caramel Egg 310g, £9 A smooth Belgian milk chocolate base with creamy milk and white chocolate. Both are sweetened with crunchy caramel pieces and enhanced by a hint of sea salt... With a description like that, we were salivating before we’d even opened the box. The egg is split into two halves, so you can enjoy the best of both. As we split this thick and decadent egg in half, a few members of the panel even let out some “oohs” and “aahs”. The salt beautifully balances out the sweet caramel and chocolate, it’s an impressive size, well-presented and is egg-cellent value for money. The fact that we couldn’t help going back for seconds, was also a strong indicator that this was the best of the bunch.
Top of the chocs 2018 OUR EGGS-PERT PANEL SHARE THEIR TOP TREATS FOR EASTER. TUCK IN...
ith such a wide range of Easter chocolates out there, and a number of family members with their own personal preferences to buy for, it’s enough to give you an eggs-istential crisis. To help with this predicament, our very
own tasting panel were on hand to put some of the most delicious Easter products from some of the best chocolatiers around to the test. Read on to find out which we deemed the most egg-cellent and which one we crowned the top of the chocs.
BEST ALL-ROUNDER Betty’s Trio of Spring Flower Eggs 250g, £27.50 Not sure whether your loved-one likes milk, dark or white chocolate? This trio ticks all the boxes. The dark chocolate egg is rich with delicious depth of flavour, the white (or should we say silver?) chocolate was creamy and obviously of a high quality, while the milk chocolate was a good balance of the two. Like most products in Betty’s Easter range, they were beautifully hand-crafted and decorated with flower frosting. 26 Southside | www.southsidemagazine.co.uk
BEST BOOZY CHOCOLATE Prestat Pink Popping Prosecco Easter Egg 170g, £17.50 Confectionary with a kick. Enveloped within this prosecco-flavoured chocolate egg are fizzing popping candy and strong prosecco-filled truffles. What’s more, it has the “By appointment to Her Majesty the Queen” seal of approval. And if it’s good enough for Liz, it’s good enough for us.
BEST FOR ALLERGIES Booja-Booja Around Midnight Espresso Easter Egg 35g, £9.99 Not only were we impressed by the gorgeously painted, egg-shaped wooden box this was presented in, we also couldn’t believe how deliciously silky these truffles were – especially considering they are organic and dairy, gluten and soya free. Coffee lovers will also enjoy the authentic flavour.
BEST FOR KIDS Thorntons White Chocolate Bunny 200g, £6 Thorntons is a must if you’ve got kids to buy for this Easter and this white chocolate bunny is a great choice. As well as being a decent size with a detailed kid-friendly design, you’re sure to get good quality chocolate from a high street favourite.
BEST FOR DARK CHOCOLATE LOVERS Chococo Luxury Madagascar MegaDark Egg 175g, £18 This one was certainly the coolest-looking of the bunch, with its geometric pattern and three layers of dark chocolate. If you know a true dark chocolate connoisseur, this bitter 85 per cent MegaDark egg is just the thing. Vegans and the ethically-minded can also rejoice, as the company strive to carefully source all their ingredients.
BEST FOR GROWN-UP KIDS Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Swiss Chocolate Bunny 440g, £6 A grown-up take on a classic kid’s choice, this Easter treat from Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference range is a realistic twist on the usual cartoon-esque hollow bunny. This was such a work of art, it was a shame to behead it. But we were soon rewarded with smooth Swiss milk chocolate, which was easy to break up as it bent rather than snapped, therefore avoiding pesky crumbs – well, it would be a shame to waste any. Pampered pooches WITH BOARDING, GROOMING, DAY CARE AND A COLLECTION AND DELIVERY SERVICE, YOU’LL FIND EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR YOUR DOG AT DUNSTON LODGE. t was over 30 years ago that Dunston Lodge Dog Boarding Kennels was founded, and with husband and wife team, Richard and Julie Harrington at the helm, it is a true family business. Throughout their 30-year history they have always been known for providing first class accommodation and care, including dog boarding, dog grooming, doggy day care and a collection and delivery service, and they take great pride in the facilities on offer and the service they provide. “Our family-run business has a lifetime of experience in animal care and is devoted to giving your dogs the best accommodation,” says Richard. “Each dog that comes in to our care is looked after as if they were one of our own and gets one on one personal attention throughout the course of their stay, giving you peace of mind whilst your away.” To ensure your dog is happy during their stay, Dunston Lodge deliver a full programme of activities each day, ensuring all dogs are well-fed, well-exercised, their rooms are kept clean and any individual requirements can be catered for, e.g. extra walks and special dietary requirements. “We know how hard it can be to leave your dog in the care of someone else, but we can assure you that we provide your dog with the love, attention and care they would receive at home,” Richard adds. “We provide your pet with a safe, warm, caring and fun environment, and employ a large team of dedicated staff who are passionate about dogs and providing great care – many of whom have worked with us for a number of years.”
Dunston Lodge welcomes all breeds, sizes and ages of dogs, including those with specific dietary or medical needs, providing single, double and family rooms, each with an indoor heated sleeping area, a supply of warm, cosy blankets, beds and bedding and an outdoor covered play area. All dogs boarding at Dunston Lodge also eat at least twice a day (choosing from the large selection of branded dog foods on the menu), will receive daily health checks, have any necessary medication administered (as instructed by their owner) and are bathed, blow-dried and clipped/groomed (if requested) so that they go home feeling a fully pampered pooch. Because Dunston Lodge are more than just your regular kennel, dogs also enjoy walks in private woodlands at least twice a day, and a professional veterinarian is on call 24/7 to provide care and advice if needed. Should you need to be away from home for long periods during the day, Dunston Lodge also offer a day care and day boarding service, meaning your dog can be dropped off from 8am and can be collected up to 6pm (weekdays) or 5pm (weekends/bank holidays). For those searching for something extra special, pamper days also include a bath/blow-
dry and any of the other grooming services of choice. And Richard and the team can also arrange for a professional photographer to come and capture some special memories with you, your family and your pampered pooch, while they are looking their best. Headed by fully qualified groomer, Gemma Wharton, the dog grooming salon offers a full range of dog grooming service, from a bath and blow dry, to full clipping, and on arrival, full details of the style you would like your dog to be groomed to will be taken. For further information on boarding, dog grooming and doggy day care services, Dunston Lodge welcome viewings at any time, although late morning or late afternoons (after morning/afternoon walks) are preferable, so that they have plenty of time to show you around and answer any queries. Green, green grass NOW IS THE TIME TO START GETTING YOUR LAWN IN SHAPE FOR SUMMER. iving your house a spring clean is a popular activity this time of year and your garden deserves the same attention if you want it to look its best. When we do venture back outside, though, we are often faced with overgrown shrubbery and under-loved lawns, and bringing your garden back to life can seem like a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be. As the weather gets milder, now is the perfect time to give your lawn some much needed TLC and keep it healthy and weed free in the months ahead. The milder winter means your lawn has probably continued growing all year and could have done with attention a little earlier than usual. First things first – it pays to take care of any bare patches that may have appeared. The best way to deal with them is to carefully rake the patch and then sow some grass seeds mixed with a little top-soil. It’s important not to let the seeds dry out, so remember to keep them well watered and you should see some sprouts appearing within a few days. Grass needs as much direct sunlight as possible to stay healthy and green, so raking up
any dead leaves and twigs is another important job and can be a great way to get the kids involved and develop their ‘green thumbs’. As a rule of thumb, the first dry and sunny day in March is the ideal time to give your lawn its first cut of the year. Cutting the grass too short, too soon, can attract unwanted weeds and moss, so to avoid that happening, make sure you use the highest blade setting on your lawnmower. Special fertilisers are available to use at this time of year to give grass the essential nutrients it needs to grow strong and give it a vibrant colour; these seasonal treatments have been specially developed to work in cooler temperatures. Spring weather conditions tend to result in a flourish of young weeds, and selecting a treatment that includes a herbicide can help to control brood-leaved weeds such as daisies, clovers, dandelions and buttercups. Once you’ve carried out basic maintenance on your lawn, it pays to plan ahead to prevent all your hard work in the spring going to waste, and to guarantee a beautiful lawn you can enjoy all summer long. Hotter weather and dry spells over the
summer can lead to your lawn turning yellow and drying up, but there are some really effective treatments out there that can help keep grass greener for longer, such as the Oasis treatment from local lawn care specialist GreenThumb. The surfactant attaches itself to the molecules in the soil to conserve any moisture, helping to reduce the amount of watering needed. Where soil type is mainly clay, which is common in the Sheffield region, the amount of water needed to keep grass green can be reduced by up to 80 per cent, so you can spend less time watering and more time enjoying your lawn. Give yourself another reason to be cheerful this spring and take care of your lawn now to enjoy the benefits of a luscious, green lawn year round. Call GreenThumb Sheffield on: 0114 276 0101 for a free lawn analysis or email: firstname.lastname@example.org GreenThumb Tel: 0114 276 0101 Email: email@example.com www.greenthumb.co.uk

First steps IS PRESCHOOL BENEFICIAL FOR YOUR CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT? LIA DESAI LOOKS AT THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY YEARS CARE AND EDUCATION. ropping your little one off at nursery for the first time might seem like a daunting experience. Many parents wonder if investing in a quality preschool is even worth it. Would it be better to stay at home with your child during these formative years? With Princess Charlotte of Cambridge having recently started school in a blaze of publicity, and apparently already well on the way to being bilingual at the age of two; it’s worth discussing the benefits of nursery school. The little Royal’s preschool says it focuses on providing a fun, structured environment where children are encouraged to read, write and understand numbers – with minimum pressure. Willcocks Nursery, in leafy Kensington, is also known to focus on emotional values and building confidence. But you don’t have to be fourth in line to the throne to benefit from early learning. More forward-thinking preschools are now offering academic teaching. Nursery allows
young children the chance to gain new skills, experiences and friendships for the first time. Developing social skills:
Firstly, the structured setting of preschool is an opportunity for children to learn how to follow instructions and develop socially. Raising their hands, taking turns and sharing will help them become more thoughtful individuals. They are taught to respect others, solve problems and comprise with their peers. They grow emotionally too – by playing with other children and gaining confidence, they achieve a sense of self-worth and learn to take care of themselves and others. Preparing them for academic education:
As well as social growth, nurseries provide a foundation for academic learning. From their ABCs to their 123s, children are prepared for the demands of school by practising premaths and literacy skills through a variety of activities. While they’re building toys and
playing shopkeepers, they’re actually acquiring transferrable life skills. Furthermore, preschool is an opportunity for children to explore, converse and find answers to their endless array of questions. They can speak to their teachers and develop relationships with their peers. This promotes language and cognitive skills. Future prospects:
Studies have found that “at-risk” children, who don’t receive good nursery education, struggle more in later life. They are 25 per cent more likely to drop out of high school and 60 per cent probably won’t go to college. It also claims that 40 per cent are more likely to become a teen parent and 70 per cent of at-risk children are more likely to be arrested for a violent crime. Scary stuff! So next time you get emotional about saying goodbye at the school gates just remember, you are giving the little darlings a huge leg-up in life. Southside | www.southsidemagazine.co.uk 39

Westbourne School Educating girls and boys for life
Westbourne named ‘leading school in Sheffield and seventh nationwide’ by the Sunday Times School Guide 2018.
Top marks for Westbourne ed by headmaster, Mr John Hicks Westbourne is the only co-educational independent school in Sheffield offering first class education to girls and boys from the age of three to 16. And such is their commitment to focusing on individualised learning – offering every child the opportunity to excel and be the best that they can be – the latest issue of the Sunday Times School Guide has named Westbourne the “top school in Sheffield and seventh nationwide”. The demand for Westbourne Senior School is likely to increase further following the publication of the school performance tables in January. Westbourne ranked as the second best school in Sheffield, including other independent schools on the attainment 8 score. Westbourne is keen to share its excellence and every January, offers scholarships to all Year 6 children in the area, for entry into their senior school in the September of the same year. “It was encouraging to see so many external applicants applying for these exams and eager to secure a place in Westbourne
senior school,” says Mr Hicks. “The standard of the results were, as we expected from such a talented group, very high, and with current Year 6 pupils and the interest generated from the January scholarship examinations, September’s Year 7 form is likely to be oversubscribed.” While great pride is taken in the academic achievements of its pupils, sporting excellence and creativity in music, theatre and art are always encouraged. And music plays a principally important part of life at Westbourne, with pupils taking part in everything from classical collaborations with world class professionals, to taking over the stage of Sheffield’s iconic Leadmill for special gig nights. In the interim, talented pupils of all ages make full use of Westbourne’s state-of-the-art drama studio, which opened in 2015, and are currently busy rehearsing for this year’s production of 13 The Musical at the Montgomery Theatre, Sheffield on the 21st and 22nd March. When it comes to sport, Westbourne is proud to be inclusive, but still retains a competitive edge, and achieves this by offering not just A team, but B and C team fixtures. Every pupil has the opportunity to represent their school in a range of sports and
recent extra-curricular trips have included a sports tour to Lanzarote and a trip to Africa, with a ski trip to the USA planned for later this year.
Meanwhile, at the younger end of the age range, places in Westbourne’s reception class are also in great demand. The very popular pre-school for three to four year olds is open 42 weeks a year, between 7.45am and 5.45pm, and offers indoor and outdoor classrooms, a purposebuilt play area, French, music and P.E. (taught by specialists), excellent facilities and free childcare places. But don’t just take our word for it.Why not take a look for yourself and book a tour of the school any day of the week, or pop in to the Westbourne open morning on 8 March, 10am -12 noon Westbourne School 60 Westbourne Road, Sheffield, S10 2QT Tel: 0114 266 0374 www.westbourneschool.co.uk Southside | www.southsidemagazine.co.uk 41

ACQUIRED TASTE The Bentley Bentayga needs no introduction – it’s the company’s first ever SUV and it’s as luxurious and pompous as any Middle-Eastern oil billionaire could ever hope for. Along with the 6.0-litre W12 petrol unit, the Bentayga is now available to order with a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine developing 542 bhp and 568 lb ft (770 Nm) of torque. Fuel economy has been stated at 24.8mpg on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 260g/km. Fuel range is predicted at 464 miles on one tank of fuel. In order to achieve these results the engine will deactivate half of its cylinders in order to save fuel whilst on a cruise. Price and release date yet to be announced. Local jewellery company supports Whirlow Hall Farm Sheffield young people with special needs given Alternative Educational Provision thanks to Freemasons The work of Sheffield charity Whirlow Hall Farm Trust has been given a boost by a £12,000 grant from the Yorkshire West Riding Freemasons. The grant will support the Trust’s programmes which help young people with complex learning and behavioural difficulties reach their potential through engagement with the outdoors. Whirlow Hall Farm Trust’s ‘Whirlow LIFE’ programme helps young people with learning disabilities or other additional needs fulfil their potential by offering an alternative approach to education and development, one that combines learning with outdoor, hands-on activities. Ben Davies, chief executive at Whirlow Hall Farm Trust, said: “We’re grateful to Yorkshire West Riding Freemasons for this very generous grant, which will allow us to help young people face their challenges and develop vital life-skills. It really will help them make the most of their potential.”
St Luke’s Hospice needs your clothes for Lent Westside’s publishing manager Sam Warsop knows what she’s giving up for Lent… and she’s supporting a great cause at the same time. Throughout the whole of the 40-day run-up to Easter, Sam will be giving an item from her wardrobe to St Luke’s Hospice. And those discarded fashion items – everything from dresses to accessories – will then be sold at the charity’s chain of 14 shops throughout the city. “I started my Lent challenge last year and it really was incredibly therapeutic, sorting through my wardrobe and knowing at the same time that I’d be doing something good for a fantastic organisation like St Luke’s,” says Sam. “I’d advise everybody to give it a go and have a pre-Easter fashion purge – and the great thing is that by the time you’ve finished you’ll have plenty of space for some new purchases.” Anybody following Sam’s Lenten lead can take their donations to any St Luke’s shop during normal trading hours – visit stlukeshospice.org.uk for individual store opening hours.
Local fine jewellery company Roseanna Croft Jewellery, proudly supported the Whirlow Hall Farm Trust in February by creating a bespoke piece for their charity Masquerade Ball at Baldwins Omega. The piece was designed especially for the occasion, inspired by The Phantom of the Opera’s ‘Masquerade’ and the intricate patterns often found on Masquerade masks. The piece was handmade in sterling silver with a unique white topaz and sparkling black sapphires. It helped to raise around £2,000 as the prize for the opening game on the evening. The trust on the night raised close to £20,000. Roseanna Croft Jewellery specialise in creating bespoke, one-off pieces of jewellery to capture a memory or an occasion. They also specialise in the redesigning of old jewellery that can no longer be worn. Roseanna Croft Jewellery will work with you to redesign the piece into something you can cherish and enjoy wearing every day. Enquire about the bespoke design services of Roseanna Croft Jewellery by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org and find out more through their website www.roseannacroftjewellery.com.

March welcomes longer days and with that the town welcomes heightened tourism and trade opportunities. It’s a time of great growth overall, and nowhere will this be
more evident than at our annual Celebrate Chesterfield event taking place later this month. Celebrate is one of the largest business events in the area, attracting up to 300 delegates each year. I love the event; there is always a buzz in the room and a collective air of excitement for the town. This year, the breakfast event will include an update on many upcoming plans and developments for Chesterfield, including the hotly anticipated Chesterfield Waterside development which will progress significantly in 2018. We’re a small town with big plans that are really starting to take shape. Our ‘city thinking’ was perfectly embodied by the Chesterfield Observation Wheel, which the town hosted over the past month. High profile locations such as Liverpool,
Hyde Park, Leeds, and even the London Olympic celebrations had previously played host to the wheel, and I was proud to see Chesterfield now on that list. Another reason to celebrate in Chesterfield this month, is National Apprenticeship Week (5-9 March). Naturally, we celebrated in our own unique way with the launch of the brand new Apprentice Town website to support this innovative project in Chesterfield. I am passionate about apprenticeships. They will play a key role in the town’s future workforce. With all the upcoming developments and trade and tourism potential that they will bring, comes the requirement of a skilled workforce – and apprenticeships can offer this. Apprentice Town is the perfect vehicle to raise awareness and interest in an area that has previously been misunderstood and under-represented. With all of this, we are not only sowing the seeds for a successful 2018, we are also looking further into the future and securing our place as a thriving town in which to live, work and socialise. We must remember though that you reap what you sow – and growth on a large scale such as that in Chesterfield takes care, time and attention.
