Happy to share their first-class experience are David and Barbara Arnold of Dronfield Woodhouse, who chose Layers to supply and fit new vinyl flooring in their kitchen and dining room.

Mr and Mrs Arnold said: “We first chose Layers eight years ago when they fitted our kitchen with vinyl flooring. We initially went to them because they are a local firm and so we thought we would give them a try. They were in the Civic Centre back then and we used to pass them while out shopping.

“Having been very happy with the service, when we decided to have vinyl fitted in the dining room too, we used Layers again. The dining room used to be carpeted but now it is more easily accessible for David, who uses a wheeled walker, as it is all one level and totally flat.

“When we visited the shop to enquire about the flooring, we felt very looked after. They got a chair for David and moved things around in the shop to make it more easily accessible for him.

“We had something quite specific in mind and were shown lots of samples.

The choice was great and they explained

about the different types of vinyl, helping us to reach the right decision.

After we had chosen, they said it could be done within two weeks and were happy to fit it at a convenient time for us.

“In the meantime, a man came round to measure the room and he brought samples so we could double check we were completely happy with our choice.

“Then when the fitter arrived a few days later we recognised each other as he was the one who had fitted our kitchen flooring eight years ago. He placed plywood down in the dining room – as he had done previously with the kitchen – before laying the flooring so it was nice and smooth. The vinyl is also very thick so it looks just like real wooden floorboards.

“We were so impressed with the fitter’s workmanship; he was brilliant. We

still can’t get our head around how he fitted the flooring as it was all in one piece but it’s incredibly neat – especially around the radiator pipes. He also pulled out the fridge, freezer and washer and put them back into place with no trouble. All in under two hours.

“He was so impressed with his handiwork he even asked us if he could take a photograph for his portfolio!

“If anybody asks us where to get new flooring, we would definitely recommend Layers. And in the future when we need new carpets we’ll certainly be popping up there.”

First class service Helen and Ian Parry were delighted with the results when they called in Dronfield Carpets and Floors to put the finishing touches to their home. aking a dilapidated barn and turning it into a family home is never an easy task, especially when you have a tight deadline to work to.

Helen and Ian Parry had spent nearly three years renovating their property in Apperknowle and though they knew it was going to be a challenge, they couldn’t wait to move in and put the finishing touches to their new home in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Thankfully, Dronfield Carpets & Floors owner Tom Straw was on hand to help.

“We were desperate to get the carpets fitted and we didn’t think we’d be able to do it in time, but they sorted it within the week,” says Helen. “We’re absolutely over the moon with it and we wouldn’t have been able to do it without Tom.” Once Helen and Ian had selected what they wanted, it only took their fitters two afternoons to install the carpets in their master bedroom, landing and three children’s bedrooms and just over a week

to fit the wooden flooring in their open plan living room and dining room, through the hall, into their kitchen and utility room.

The Dronfield Carpets & Floors showroom, with its impressive selection of carpet and floor samples, gave Ian and Helen a good idea of how their finished home would look. When the samples weren’t available in the store, Tom was happy to order them in for the couple to try.

The Parrys have succeeded in modernising their home, whilst keeping the feel of the old barn. “We chose the European White Oak engineered flooring for downstairs because they look warm and match the window frames. They’re hard wearing and work well with our under-floor heating as well,” explains Helen. “Sharon from the showroom suggested Wild Mushroom carpets for upstairs. It’s a bit darker than I’m used to, but it’s been fab. We wanted a bit of comfort in the bedrooms.”

Helen has been impressed by the

dedication of the team, especially once the work had been completed. “Tom and Sharon can’t do enough for you. I’ve called them up when we’ve wanted something extra and they’ve got it within a couple of days.”

Where can we play?

The scheme runs at four golf courses – Beauchief, Birley Wood and Tinsley Park, in Sheffield, and Tapton Park, in Chesterfield.

It sounds great, what’s included?

You get three, 30-minute golf lessons

with a PGA-qualified coach, which can be booked at any time during a three-month period. You can practice what you’ve learnt with three months free access to the four courses after 1pm. There’s also unlimited access to the 9-hole Academy Course at Tapton Park.

What do the lessons cover?

They have been designed to be an easy and affordable introduction to golf. The coaches will teach the basics from grip and posture to swing and putting. The one-to-one sessions will be tailored according to your ability.

Well for a start, it’s great for your health.

Playing an 18-hole game of golf burns at

least 900 calories. Golf also combines the weight-loss benefits of walking combined with the toning and musclestrengthening benefits of swinging the clubs and carrying or pulling your golf bag. Flair for flavour Chris Wilson is blown away by the standard of the modern cooking produced by the kitchen at the Red Lion. ead chef Oliver Parnell is giving free reign to his creative flair with the new spring/summer menu at one of the finest food destinations in Derbyshire, the Red Lion at the Peak Edge Hotel.

Stunning views across Stone Edge have always made this a popular venue for those who fancy a run out to the country and a bite to eat – but even without the lovely setting, the quality coming out of the kitchen makes a visit an absolute pleasure.

A new a la carte selection plus two tasting menus provides endless variety, and if you fancy something a little more down-to-earth, the pub food favourites like fish and chips and burgers look pretty irresistible too.

On our latest visit we were able to sample dishes from across the posher spectrum of the menu and were blown away by the taste, texture and stylish presentation.

This is modern British cooking at its best, using locally sourced meat, vegetables and herbs to create a series of dishes that look good and are full of gutsy, full-on flavours.

A taste of the inventive gastronomic tour de force to come was delivered with a canape of

pea and ham foamed soup with broccoli and stilton choux pastry balls. Excellent rye bread and poppy seed rolls with burnt butter completed the curtainraiser and left us hungry for more.

As well as using local suppliers whenever possible, Oliver likes to forage in local fields for ingredients such as the wild garlic, which added a fragrant bite to the soup when combined with jersey royals, English asparagus and pea shoots.

The Red Lion is a versatile venue, operating as a cosy pub as well as a classy bistro. Service is relaxed and friendly, but with the waiters in the candle-lit dining area smartly attired in black waistcoats, white shirts and black ties there is no doubting that this is a serious foodie operation, where all aspects of the restaurant experience are taken care of.

At this time of year, locally sourced lamb should be at its peak of flavour and we enjoyed two examples of this; delicate lamb sweetbreads with peas, ham and shitake mushrooms, and spring lamb

Wellington. The later dish, with the meat just pink and the pastry perfectly crisp, was a real highlight.

Equal care was lavished on a perfectly cooked dish of stuffed plaice with brown shrimp, beurre blanc, mussels, samphire and Jesey royals.

Every dish was beautifully presented, and a palate-cleansing dish to signify the end of the savoury course and usher in the sweets showed a playfully inventive touch too. How about a test tube filled with pina colada placed on a bed of crushed ice surrounded by dry ice, with coconut sorbet and pineapple slice on the side? Over the top perhaps, but great fun and, most importantly, rather delicious.

Pistachio parfait and chocolate mousse completed the sweet segment and brought a dazzling dinner to a sweet finale.

This was a very special tasting and all the dishes we sampled are available on the tasting and a la carte menus at the Red Lion.

The tasting menus cost £60 for ten courses, £45 for seven. A la carte diners pay £23 for two courses and £28 for three.

From fine art to fantastic beaches and 24-hour party people, there are plenty of reasons why Tel Aviv is becoming THE short break destination of choice, writes Chris Wilson.

snapshot of Tel Aviv is likely to contain at least three of the following: a spectacular seafront with palm trees and golden sands, beautifully preserved Bauhaus architecture, ultra-modern tower blocks, building sites, leafy boulevards... and a handful of impossibly cool dressed-down twenty-somethings making an art form out of doing nothing in particular.

This is the city that took a long, hard look at the political and religious strife that most of the world associates with Israel, and decided it would rather throw a party instead. They call it The Bubble, and it’s easy to see why.

Well, that’s one side of the story, and if you are looking for a short break

destination that provides brilliant beaches, shopping, smart restaurants, and a relentless dusk ‘til dawn nightlife you won’t be disappointed.

You will, however, only be getting half the story. Tel Aviv is certainly big and brash, with an ever-changing skyline thanks to the huge number of very tall buildings being thrown up to cope with a booming population and vibrant business culture – but appearances can be deceptive.

The “anything goes” culture that makes this city a magnet for the modern world’s 24-hour party people, has also created a haven for artists, designers and creative minds, a point that was very much brought home to me as soon as I checked in to the Artplus Hotel.

This chic and understated hotel (blink and you’ll miss the entrance) is dedicated to Israeli art. Five local artists were commissioned to create the murals that set the tone for the décor on each of the five floors. Retro-style furniture combines with clean modern design. My own room was a white cube with splashes of red acrylic paint on canvas designed by acclaimed local artist Elfrat Gal Nur. All rooms provide scribbling pads and coloured crayons, encouraging guests to catch the mood and get creative. With video installations on the stairwells and a ‘virtual’ Persian-style carpet projected onto the lobby floor, I found the whole set-up great fun.

not get a sea view but it is a two-minute stroll to Tel Aviv beach and the beachfront promenade.

They also do great breakfasts and have a happy hour with nibbles and wine for guests every afternoon. Whether you are here to soak up the culture, hit the beach or crawl the bars, Artplus is the ideal base for your stay.

If you want to get to grips with what is happening in Tel Aviv right now, head for the Sarona Complex. Hyped as the New City of Tel Aviv, it is a mix of unique Tel Aviv architectural history and a fusion of urban experiences, incorporating art, culture, entertainment and leisure. Despite the relentless building programme, huge efforts are being made to renovate and preserve. In the Templer settlement, one of the first modern agricultural settlements in Palestine dating back to the 1870s, we stumbled across an immaculately preserved olive press alongside a very cool modern wine bar built into the basement of one of the old dwellings.

Often when a city embarks on a massive modernisation programme like this – and the corporate world is pouring millions into the new business-minded Tel Aviv – alternative lifestyles are marginalised and the result is a sterile banality. Not here, where street art (graffiti if you prefer) thrives.

These aren’t just chancers with a few cans of spray paint. Committed artists like Maya Gelfman, a 37-year-old who has been exhibited at art fairs around the world, can take weeks working on complex, striking designs that all carry her tell-tale heart signature. There are many more like her. From the overtly political to the simply pretty, this unofficial art is as much a part of the cityscape as the sleek new office blocks

and the cool bars.

For something slightly less cerebral, take a stroll along the waterfront. From the billionaire’s boy toy yachts in the harbour to the surfers and beach volleyball aficionados, it’s the perfect setting to find a café to settle down for a spot of people watching. I didn’t spot any dog grooming parlours but they

must exist, judging by the number of primped pooches strutting alongside their owners.

Jaffa is also home to the brilliant, barmy Bet Ilana Gur Museum, which exhibits original sculptures and designs of the artist Ilana Gur and also serves as her private home.

The museum building stands on a hill in Old Jaffa with breathtaking views of the new city and the Mediterranean.

The museum’s collections boast works of art both from Israel and throughout the world; sculptures by Henry Moore, ethnic art from Africa and South America, experimental art from around the world. Eclectic is the word and Gur the collector clearly favours art with a strong sense of self-expression.

Even if you are not an art fanatic the views from the roof of the museum, back across to Tel Aviv, are mesmerising. It’s the perfect spot to draw breath, try to put everything you’ve seen into some sort of perspective, and plan your next visit.

CHESTERFIELD CHAMPIONS Chesterfield continues to increase its appeal, says Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield. he weather has finally turned warmer and the lighter nights are here. Chesterfield is beginning to blossom once again and in more ways than one.

While the floral displays in and round the town have come to life so too has tourism. There’s nothing like warm weather and sunshine to put us in the holiday mood. This is a great opportunity for Chesterfield to capitalise on its proximity to the Peak District as well as spectacular visitor attractions like Chatsworth House, Hardwick Hall and Bolsover Castle.

However, it’s important Chesterfield doesn’t become a place that people pass through in order to reach their tourist destinations. The town, in its own right, has so much to offer tourists not least the crooked spire, museum,

Chesterfield Visitor Information Centre is doing a great job welcoming visitors to the town. So much so that it is a finalist in the prestigious VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2015. Soon the town will have yet another reason for people to visit us – a monthly artisan market which will take place on the last Sunday of every month.

The market will give people, both locals and those from outside the area, more reason to visit Chesterfield on Sunday. The increased footfall will benefit other retailers in the town. The popularity of online shopping and out of town shopping centres means it is more important than ever to support our town centre retailers. And the level of support for Chesterfield’s retailers is incredibly

pleasing, if the nominations for the 2015 Chesterfield Retail Awards are anything to go by.

You nominated in your droves, giving us an incredibly strong field of contenders for the 15 awards. The awards have now become a fixture in Chesterfield’s calendar. I’m delighted that Peak FM breakfast show presenters James Summers and Becky Measures have agreed to host the awards at the Winding Wheel on Wednesday 24 June. I am sure their big personalities will make the 2015 awards an event to remember and one I am personally looking forward to, very much like summer.

Michael played for England 1999-2008 and won The Ashes in 2005, Richard played for Yorkshire and Middlesex then went on to become an international umpire in 2008 and Joe has played for England since 2012.
