Eating for health RACHEL MARTIN’S GUIDE TO THE SUPERFOODS YOU SHOULD BE INCLUDING IN YOUR DIET THIS YEAR. ccording to Mintel’s 2018 global food and drink report, plant-based diets are set to explode into the mainstream this year, and in a bid for optimal wellness, 'superfoods’ are now seen as a direct pathway to radiant health and boundless energy.

While in 2017 we turned to the healing properties of turmeric, macadamia nuts and maca powder, this year edible clays, matcha

and hemp products are set to be huge, according to experts. And the new alternatives, though a little strange sounding on the face of it, claim to offer myriad health benefits and are of course environmentally sustainable.

Here, Southside takes a look some of the health food trends predicted to be huge in 2018, and reveals what could well be set to become your new nutrition normal.

Hemp Seeds These small seeds are rich in essential fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids, including omega-3s, which can help fight coronary heart disease, cancer, and even symptoms of depression. Hemp seeds are also a rich source of the polyunsaturated fatty acid gamma linolenic acid, or GLA, which has been known to help with a number of maladies, ranging from allergies and attention deficit disorder, to lowering cholesterol levels.

Chicories Haven’t heard of this one? Chicories are those bitter winter greens like endive and escarole or purple radicchio. They are a good source of vitamin C and may also help boost heart health.

POMEGRANATE Pomegranates are known for their antioxidants and are an excellent source of fiber and vitamins C and K.

Matcha Chock full of polyphenols, matcha is lauded for its anti-aging properties. Importantly, it may help lower the risk of certain cancers and heart disease. And if you’re trying to stay focused on your goals this year, sip on this. Matcha is known to boost mental alertness too without the jitters you might get from other caffeinated drinks.

Activated Charcoal Activated charcoal can help you get purer skin and whiter teeth, as well as absorbing the standing tannins found in drinks like coffee and red wine.

SEAWEED Unlike their land-bound counterparts, sea-grown vegetables are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which may prevent sudden heart attack and stroke.

Seaweed is also full of important minerals, such as bone-friendly calcium and magnesium, as well as iron, potassium, iodine and zinc.

Açai Native to the rainforests of South America, the açai is a small purple berry that has been touted as a weight-loss and anti-aging aid. The fruit contains very high levels of antioxidants in the form of anthocyanins, which help fight cancer and heart disease.

HEALTHY EATING

GOJI BERRIES Goji berries have become a common sight on supermarket shelves, and for good reason: they contain a lot of vitamin C. Native to Tibet and Inner Mongolia, these orange-red tangy berries have been used by Chinese herbalists for centuries to treat visual ailments and poor circulation and to help boost the immune system. Scientific research has yet to support such claims, but there’s no denying that goji berries are rich in plant-based antioxidants and compounds.

Chia Seeds Native to Mexico, these nutrient-rich seeds have become all the rage among superfood seekers. And it’s no surprise - chia seeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and calcium.

Nutritional Yeast Not to be confused with active dry or brewer’s yeast, nutritional yeast is made from deactivated yeast and has no leavening power. It’s a great source of protein and fiber and is also among the only vegan-friendly sources of vitamin B12, which is essential for normal brain and nervous-system function but found mostly in meat and dairy products.

Black Garlic Black garlic has long been prized for its health benefits, but it became widely available in Western markets only a few years ago. The black bulb is created by fermenting raw garlic through prolonged exposure to heat and humidity, giving it a sweet, mellow flavour and an inky hue. In addition to the sulfuric compounds that provide garlic with its heart-healthy and anticancer benefits, the fermented cloves are a source of important probiotics.

Kale

GREEN TEA This ages-old health secret has been used as a natural remedy for everything from cancer to heart disease. The secret to this delicious drink? Antioxidants. The main superhero here is Epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, a phytochemical that slows irregular cell growth, which could potentially help prevent the growth of some cancers.

Move over spinach, you've got some fierce competition. Kale contains a type of phytonutrient that appears to lessen the occurrence of a wide variety of cancers, including breast and ovarian. Though scientists are still studying why this happens, they believe the phytonutrients in kale trigger the liver to produce enzymes that neutralize potentially cancer-causing substances.

Salmon Salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids, which the body cannot produce by itself. These fatty acids reduce inflammation, improve circulation and increase the ratio of good to bad cholesterol. Salmon is also a rich source of selenium, which helps prevent cell damage, and several B vitamins.

QUINOA This teeny-tiny, grain-like seed packs some serious nutritional prowess. With a mild, nutty flavour and a texture similar to rice or couscous, quinoa is one of the only grains or seeds that provides all nine essential amino acids our bodies can't produce themselves. And it's filled with protein - eight grams per one-cup serving, to be exact.

Long and winding road DON’T LET THE DRIVE PUT YOU OFF, WRITES RACHEL MARTIN. IT’S MORE THAN WORTH THE EFFORT. “

here is it?” I’m thinking, as the sat nav tells me to signal right and the road winds high into the village of Ashbourne. My companion asks whether I have made a mistake. I had no idea. “Just trust the GPS,” I said.

On and up we go, along the winding roads of the Derbyshire Peaks and Staffordshire.

And as we edge further away from the brighter lights of the Dovedale Valley, I’m hoping this isn’t going to end with an ‘I told you so’ look.

But just I begin to think we’d been miscast in the remake of Wuthering Heights, The Izaak Walton hefts into view. And as we pull up outside the majestic 17th century country house hotel, named after the famous author of “The Complete Angler”, we were full of anticipation for the evening ahead.

We were warmly greeted by the receptionist, who took us to the 2 AA Rosette awarded Haddon Restaurant. Being the first to be seated was not a problem, as the waiters were welcoming and showed us to a lovely table draped in white linen and laden with heavy silver cutlery, an elegant candelabra and delicate wine glasses.

Soon, the restaurant began to fill up, enhancing the pleasant atmosphere, and as we perused the starters our waiter was quick to bring out selection of warm, homemade breads and butter, which were moreishly good.

The pre-starter canapes were impossible to turn down; the goats’ cheese so light and rich

it seemed to smoulder in the mouth for an eternity and the hint of earthiness from the mushroom at the finish was divine. The accompanying bon bon left us in a frenzy at the thought of what might be appearing next.

And quite rightly too, as my starter of panfried quail breast and leg lollipop appeared: complemented by a glass of Finca Flichman reserve Malbec (£6.50) followed by a vibrant and fresh assiette of beetroot, blue cheese, walnut pesto, basil and peashoots for my companion. The latter paired perfectly with a fresh on the palate glass of Greyrock Marlborough sauvignon blanc (£6.50).

The quail breast was served with fried quails egg, king oyster mushroom, pancetta and jus and proved to be deliciously delicate.

The leg lollipop was tender and succulent, and set the bar high for meaty mains to come.

My venison was generous to say the least, cooked beautifully and presented with flair.

Dressed with black pudding and venison bon bon, duo of carrot, fondant potato and seasoned with redcurrant jus, it had a deep flavour and a softness which melted in the mouth.

My companion’s sage, mushroom and butternut pasta was perfectly complemented by crispy mozzarella and tempura sage. And the creamy, flawlessly smooth béchamel gave an earthy dimension, whilst shaved parmesan added textural contrast.

We were more than pleased with our

puddings: my soufflé was perfectly formed with vanilla ice cream and zingy blackberries.

My companion’s theatrical dish of dark chocolate parfait and passionfruit textures was a tangy, sweet confection, a final burst of fireworks in a meal which came humming and fizzing with invention – an amazing way to almost end the meal.

I say “almost end” because we rounded off dessert with coffee, accompanied by beautiful homemade mint and citrus chocolates.

Our midweek visit was the ideal antidote to a murky autumn’s eve – but go for supper in winter when the fires are roaring and I’d imagine it would be even more magical.

MY FATHERS HEART HAD DOUBLE THE FUN OVER THE FESTIVE PERIOD, HOSTING TWO SPECIAL EVENTS. he excitement and anticipation associated with the festive season was captured beautifully in two events hosted by My Fathers Heart, designers and builders of the region’s finest bespoke, handmade kitchens, bedrooms and furniture.

A Taste of Christmas was a special evening of Christmas canapes, cooking demos and wine recommendations, giving guests food for thought when it came to hosting their own festive celebrations.

Brocco Kitchen, Sheffield’s multi-award winning boutique hotel, and Le Bon Vin, one of the leading wine merchants in the north of England, were on hand to make sure the party went with a swing.

Get on track MAKE GOOD ON YOUR INTENTIONS BY CHOOSING RESOLUTIONS THAT ARE REALISTIC AND ACHIEVABLE, WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR. very January, we set ourselves resolutions with the best of intentions. And yet by February, most of us start to slip back into our old ways.

Last year, Bupa published a poll based on 2,000 British people which found that out of those who said they would be setting a new year’s resolution for 2017, half were not confident they would stick to it.

With this kind of attitude, it’s no surprise we fail to keep them. So what is it about our resolutions that leaves us feeling as though they are unattainable?

Bupa found that around one in five people also admitted to setting overly ambitious and potentially unsustainable goals, while psychology professor Peter Herman and his colleagues have identified what they call the ‘false hope syndrome’, meaning our resolutions tend to be significantly unrealistic and out of alignment with our internal view of ourselves and so our minds reject them.

From losing weight to saving money, each resolution requires us to change our behaviour, which ultimately means changing our mind-sets.

Here are some tips to help you keep your mind on track and to help make your resolutions more achievable this year.

BE REALISTIC If your resolution is too ambitious, it will be unrealistic to achieve. Your chances of success are much greater when you channel all your energy into changing just one aspect of your behaviour.

So rather than vowing to lose weight and cut out drinking, concentrate on lowering your calorie intake and doing more exercise – and allow yourself the odd glass of red from time to time. Diets are about everything in moderation, and the same goes for your goals.

BE SPECIFIC The more specific you can be, the more you can break your resolution down into smaller, more manageable goals. Another thing which tends to happen with non-specific goals is that they are easier to put off and you’ll be tempted to keep moving your goal posts. Instead of saying, ‘I want to lose weight this year’, say ‘I want to lose two stone this year’ so you will have a clear target and know when you have successfully met it.

When it comes to our resolutions, many of us find it much easier to talk the talk, than we do committing to the walk. By recording your goal, you make a conscious commitment to working toward achieving it. Write down your resolution or even make a chart where you can track your progress regularly and place it somewhere it can easily be seen such as above your desk where you work, on your bathroom mirror or on your kitchen fridge.

DON’T GIVE UP

Finally, if you do come up against some obstacles or fail to meet your short-term goals, don’t beat yourself up about it, and most importantly, don’t let it discourage you.

MEASURE IT

Another reason the resolution ‘I want to lose two stone’ works so well is that it can be tracked and regularly measured. Goals that have deadlines are also a great way to motivate you. ‘I want to lose two stone by my son’s wedding in July’ is therefore a more effective measurement of your success, while, ‘I want to lose four pounds each month’ is even better, as it can be measured regularly and in the short-term – just remember to keep it realistic.

MAKE IT EXCITING

People are often put off their resolutions because they can feel like a chore. You may happily tuck into a bowl of vegetables and quinoa for a day or two, but after two weeks of eating the same meal, not so much. If you are aiming to eat healthily, create a varied and interesting menu. The same applies for long-term goals. Instead of saying, ‘I want to save money’, adding a reason such as, ‘so I can take my children to Disneyland’ gives you something positive and specific to look forward to.

More of the same WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR THE PROPERTY MARKET? HANNAH SANDERS ASKED TWO OF THE REGION’S PREMIER PROPERTY EXPERTS.

2017 was very much a year of two halves for UK property prices. The first six months were ‘business as usual’ as house prices steadily increased. This growth was very much as predicted with house prices rising on average between five and eight per cent.

It was as the property industry geared up for the busiest time of the year that the housing market stalled. From May onwards, we began to see subsequent stunted growth with many regions reporting repeated monthly falls, the likes of which we have not seen since the housing bubble burst in 2008.

The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors cited fewer people looking to buy as the predominant reason, coupled with political uncertainty and looming interest rate hikes.

The North-South divide continued to persist with Scotland, North East England and Wales being the only areas where sales picked up, while in the rest of the country trends 34 Southside | www.southsidemagazine.co.uk

were either flat or negative. The immediate forecast is for sales to continue to flat line with an overall decrease in property prices for 2018 as a whole.

Looking longer term, national house prices are predicted to rise by at least six per cent over the next five years by Barclays, who believe the UK property industry will return to more buoyant times once we have weathered the storm.

Over the next five years, it is believed that high employment rates, growth in private housing market levels and an increase in rates of average earnings will contribute to rising property prices across the UK. The South is expected to see the largest annual property price increase over this period, however, property investors are looking north for good value for money and income stability. Yorkshire and Derbyshire prices are likely to rise by an average of three to four per cent over the next five years with certain property hot spots having the potential to achieve a rise of 10-13 per cent.

Over a third of high net worth investors looking to purchase property in northern regions think that property prices are going to rise, with over a quarter who plan to purchase citing ‘strong rental income’ as a reason to invest here.

This positive outlook will be received as positive news for both homeowners and buyers and will produce a tonic to the current fears of political uncertainty and looming rises in interest rates.

Probably the most frequent question I was asked in 2017 was: “What will be the impact of Brexit on the housing market this year and into 2018?” This underlines the level of uncertainty which has existed within the minds of landlords, buyers and sellers alike.

Fewer properties have been coming to the sales and lettings market (averaging four per cent to six per cent less in 2017 compared to 2016) with the natural knock-on effect that there’s been less choice for buyers.

On a positive note, buyers have benefitted from some attractive mortgage rates, with the trend in the latter part of 2017 being to opt for a fixed rate product. This offers buyers financial stability in terms of monthly payments (providing they have a ten per cent deposit).

Researching the rental market across our network of 11 offices across North and West Yorkshire has revealed that tenants are now staying in a property for an average of 21 months – almost twice as long as when we first opened our doors 20 years ago.

This is a trend we expect to gather further momentum throughout 2018, as living in a rented home for a longer period is now a real and sustainable alternative for a people seeking a more flexible lifestyle.

2017 has seen a steady growth in sale prices of circa five per cent across both North and West Yorkshire. We have seen first-hand signs of pent-up demand now being released.

This is evidenced in the typically more sought-after locations of Harrogate, North Leeds and York. Here, achieved prices have been 95 per cent to 98 per cent of asking prices – and the speed of sale has been faster than the regional average.

This year has witnessed a healthier appetite among developers in the new homes sector – and we see this as a big stand-out growth area for 2018. This will help the under-supply of housing, although this must be seen as a longterm strategy rather than a quick fix.

What will we experience in 2018? A very similar picture to be truthful – with a backdrop of small, incremental interest rate rises; and the ripple effects of new Government initiatives – spearheaded by stamp duty reductions for firsttime buyers, and build-to-rent developments, especially in Leeds city centre.

UP TO £250,000 In Acomb, York is a beautiful threebedroom, semi-detached house. It has a through lounge, dining room, modern interior and benefits from a stunning garden. The Embsay at Heatherfields, Doncaster boasts an exquisite fourbedroom, detached home that will spoil you for space and style. A diamond among the coal AUTHOR CATHERINE BAILEY TALKS TO PHOEBE SEYMOUR ABOUT HER FASCINATION WITH THE SPLENDOUR OF WENTWORTH WOODHOUSE AND HER HOPES FOR ITS FUTURE. itting on a luxurious sofa and staring in awe at the huge fireplace, twinkling chandelier and the detailed gold-painted ceiling and walls of the Van Dyck Room, there is no denying that Wentworth Woodhouse is still a magnificent stately home.

But then I notice, carved into the wall, a golden frame above the fireplace with a blank rectangular space where an original painting

by Sir Anthony van Dyck once hung – symbolic of this historical building’s former splendour.

No one knows more about Wentworth’s ups and downs than Catherine Bailey, author of best-selling book, Black Diamonds: The Rise and Fall of an English Dynasty.

As she sits with me on the evening of a fundraising event to restore the building, she is bubbling over with optimism for the future of the house.

After all, it’s come a long way since she stood in front of its neglected form in 1999 while working as a TV researcher.

“When I first came to Wentworth Woodhouse, I made the mistake that

everybody makes in thinking the stables were the house,” explains Catherine. “Then I came round the corner and I just couldn’t believe how huge it was and that I’d never heard of it before. It seemed like this forgotten palace and it was shuttered up like it was abandoned.

“And it rather haunted me. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. So in between my television job, I did some research and began to find this skeleton of an extraordinary family story.”

Catherine had also noticed something strange about the landscape in front of the house. It didn’t have the usual manicured appearance you’d expect from a stately home.

She later discovered this was because the land had been mined, and the title, Black Diamonds was born.

Built by the Marquesses of Rockingham between 1725 and 1750, the 180-metre east front is believed to be the longest of any English country house.

The fourth Earl, Fitzwilliam inherited the estate in 1782 and was responsible for much of the early industrial development in the area, establishing numerous mines and factories in the surrounding towns and villages and by the midnineteenth century, the family were thought to be the sixth wealthiest landowners in the country.

However, the book focusses on a particularly tumultuous period between 1900 and 1950, and the more Catherine describes this time, the more it sounds like a Downton Abbey plot.

“At the turn of the century, the lifestyle here just defies belief today.

here with his two unmarried daughters and they had 85 servants to look after them. That was just indoors. There was 300 in the grounds including a mole catcher and a bear keeper – it was just so lavish.

“The extraordinary thing was that in the space of 50 years, they had been hounded out of this house. They’d lost their collieries, their wealth and the whole dynasty was in danger of dying out.

“For me, the coal was almost more important, because I’d spent quite a bit of time in the mid-80s in a pit village in south Wales and it felt like the house was a symbol of the bleakest statistics of the last century.

“One per cent of people owned two thirds of the nation’s wealth and 88 per cent owned nothing. So Britain’s miners had been the driving force in righting that social injustice.

So it was this story of the miners who were part of this community and the family itself that drew me to it.”

But as Catherine explains, writing the book wasn’t without its obstacles.

“The biggest shock to me, was that 16 tonnes of documents had been burnt in the 70s and therefore the records I needed to write the book weren’t there. So instead of being a straightforward history where there was a portrait of a community, family and an industry over an arc of time, it became something of a detective story and I had to piece it all together.

“But I got amazing help from people in the village. It was really an oral history by talking to those who’d worked at the house and whose parents and grandparents who had, and of course, the mining families and the community who’d worked round here before and after World War II.” Shortly after she visited the house in 1999, the Newbold family bought Wentworth.

During this time, the property has been used to film a number of series such as ITV’s

Memorial Fund grant.

Events such as tonight’s Q&A and book signing with Catherine in the magnificent Marble Saloon are essential to preserve such a stunning local landmark.

“I am delighted to be supporting the rescuers, the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, as they strive to give the house back its true place in the community. It’s now nice to see the lights on and cars parked outside. It would be lovely to think that my book has played a part in the house’s future.”

So ran the headlines. And Sir Norman Adsetts was never very far from them in an extraordinary career which reached its peak in the heady days of the mid-1980s.

Now he’s in the news again, this time for making his debut as an author – at the age of 86.

His new book, A Man of Sheffield – the Adsetts Story, has already attracted critical acclaim from seasoned industry-watchers.

The book represents the fulfilment of another ambition for Sir Norman, who first

thought of the idea after researching his family history. This revealed several major surprises, and not least, one or two skeletons in the cupboard.

He discovered ancestors including a combative pre-WW1 politician who became a master of the soapbox speech, a 19th century hero of the American running track – who was incidentally also a bigamist and became implicated in race-fixing scandals – and a murderer whose gruesome deeds shocked Hong Kong nearly 100 years ago, a crime for which he went to the gallows.

And yet the book is more than a mere family history or business biography. It is a history of Sheffield seen through the eyes of those bearing the Adsetts name.

The story begins in the late 16th century and includes authoritative detail on major historical events including the First World War and the Normandy landings, leading up to the 1980s and the regeneration of Sheffield, a process in which he was instrumental.

And yet Sir Norman, whose home is still in Sheffield, is characteristically modest about his latest achievement.

“It’s the story of a family that moved four miles in 400 years. So we weren’t exactly upwardly mobile!” he said.

Abbeydale Cottage Nursey visits The Callywhite Care Home A group of children from Abbeydale Cottage Nursery in Sheffield took a trip to visit the elderly residents of The Callywhite Care Home in Dronfield.

The visit was the idea of Fiona Gallagher, child practitioner at Abbeydale Cottage Nursery. Fiona was inspired by a Channel 4 programme that documented an intergenerational experiment demonstrating the benefits of preschool children spending time with the elderly.

Fiona Gallagher explained: “I’ve been working with children for over 20 years and have learned a lot about their emotional development but this documentary really interested me.

“Many residents may not have young grandchildren so this visit was very special.

Many of our children at the nursery have relatively young grandparents and do not have the opportunity to spend time with elderly people. The benefits of this initiative is certainly positive for everyone!”

The Callywhite Care Home, part of The Green Care Group, was more than keen to take part.

Julie Reaney, deputy manager at The Callywhite said: “When Fiona contacted us with the idea, there was no hesitation in getting involved. We have recognised for a long time how beneficial it is to our residents when children come to visit. Our residents absolutely love it.”

A group of 10 children, aged two and three visited the care home and the children and residents were immediately drawn to one another and played together through a series of games and sing-a-longs.

A programme has already been put in place for the children to visit the care home regularly.

PLACES GAIN THREE MORE GYMS Places for People Leisure has acquired three Simply Gyms, which will run under its Places Gym brand, in Chesterfield, Telford and Hinckley.

As one of the largest leisure operators in the UK, managing over 100 leisure facilities, Places for People Leisure looks at ways to improve physical activity within communities.

With the acquisition of these three gyms there are now six Places Gyms altogether, with the other three in Corby, Preston and Sheffield.

Sandra Dodd, chief executive of Places for People Leisure, said: “As part of the acquisition significant investments are planned within the three clubs for next year which we hope will ensure that we create vibrant, attractive and imaginative places that can’t help but encourage people to be more active.”

The Aston Martin Vantage is the baby in the range, the small agile coupe with the personality of an excitable dog. The Vantage has an all-new futuristic look separating it from the rest of the Aston Martin line-up, taking design cues from the Aston Martin Vulcan track car.

As Aston Martin shares a partnership with Mercedes, it’ll be powered by the same 510hp 4.0-litre biturbo V8 found in the Mercedes AMG GTS. This produces a 0-62mph time of 3.5 seconds and a vmax of 195mph. Power is delivered through a eight-speed ZF automatic transmission via the rear wheels.

Say hello everyone to the all-new Jeep Compass – Jeep’s attempt to make the SUV segment its own.

Starting at £22,995, the Compass is a great way to enter the SUV market. Upon its arrival in February 2018, there’ll be two petrol and three diesels to choose from. Petrol units are a 140hp 1.4-litre turbo and a 170hp 1.6-litre turbo. Diesels are a 120hp 1.6-litre unit and a 2.0-litre motor with either 140hp and 170hp. Transmissions available are a sixspeed manual or a nine-speed automatic with either two-wheel or four-wheel drivetrains.

Four equipment levels: Sport, Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk. Standard equipment includes 16-inch alloy wheels, LED tail lights, leather steering wheel, air-con and cruisecontrol. Higher specs include larger alloy wheels, Apple CarPlay and keyless go.

â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and we will begin to ready ourselves for the benefits that HS2 will bring to the town.

Although 17 years away, we must start laying the foundations now â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not just physically, but also in training and skills in order to make sure we take advantage of the opportunities HS2 will bring to the town.

I recently attended Chesterfieldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first Investment Summit, which brought together businesses, investors and developers across the region.

Richard Brown CBE, a board member of HS2 was speaking at the conference. Previously on the board of Eurostar, Mr Brown said that there was the opportunity for HS2 to transform Chesterfieldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fortunes in the same way Eurostar had done for Lille in France.

And there are many parallels to be drawn. The city, in the north of France, was known for its industrial background and underwent some difficult years prior to having a Eurostar station. The town fought to get its station and was successful in 1993.

Now Lille is known throughout France for its handsome city centre and culture and is ranked as one of the major metropolitan areas of Europe. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the gateway to Belgium, like we are to the Peak District. Since the creation of the Eurostar station, rather than passing through the city people actually stop and spend time there. That is what we must recreate in Chesterfield. I am confident this will happen as there will be much to attract visitors and encourage them to stop and stay before venturing into the Peak District.

While the start of construction on the HS2 line in Chesterfield is some years away, work did get under way stripping out the former Co-op building at the end of the year, ahead of it being transformed into a hotel and restaurant later this year.

Work also started towards the end of 2017 on creating the access roundabout, bridleways and footpaths for Peak Resort. In 2018, construction will begin on the hotel, apartments and multi-storey carpark in phase one of Chesterfield Waterside.

Years of behind-the-scenes work is now coming together. Our physical and economic building blocks are being put in place that will make Chesterfield a town to live, work, do business and visit. The only way is up.
