New year, new floor No false ‘sales’, no tricks, no gimmicks … just good value and high quality service all year round.

S

ales are everywhere and there are huge discounts to be had. But have you ever pondered over a price that you think may be too good to be true? Well, the chances are, it probably is. At Layers Flooring in Dronfield, ‘sale time’ is approached in a totally different manner. Unlike many of their competitors within the industry, the local independent company promises to only deliver genuine reductions, which are granted to them periodically by the manufacturers. Certain large carpet outlets are notorious for hiking the prices to three times the real value, only to reduce them dramatically to suggest huge savings. Quite often you will find these same products in independent stores such as Layers at lower than their competitors’ sale prices all year round. Helpful, impartial advice is always on hand from the team of expert staff at Layers and they allow you to browse at your leisure rather than jumping on you with pushy sales tactics. This philosophy extends to every arm of the business and there are no sales gimmicks designed to make you ‘buy now think later’. Layers supply and fit carpets, vinyl, wood and laminates from the country’s leading manufacturers in a range of colours and styles. Even when on a tight budget, Layers will always provide value for money ensuring you get the best quality for the amount you can afford.

Customers are at the heart of the business and much of the work Layers carry out is based on word-of-mouth recommendations and repeat business. Since first opening the doors of their Crosspool branch over a decade ago, Layers have built a loyal following of customers, going from strength to strength and welcoming a sister branch, which opened in Dronfield six years ago. Layers offer many additional services including moving and replacing heavy furniture, uplifting and disposing of any existing floor coverings, and trimming and refixing doors, kitchen plinths and new skirting

boards. Their joiners can also attend to squeaky floorboards that have been a bugbear for so long. As standard Layers also offer free, no obligation quotes and a free sample loan service. If you’re elderly, housebound or simply find it difficult getting to the shop within working hours, they are happy to visit your home and bring lots of samples for you to consider; even out of hours. It’s a flexible approach to suit you and your lifestyle. If you’re on the lookout for new flooring, be sure to visit Layers Flooring, where you’ll find genuine discounts on already-competitive prices. SS Fitness

Join Sheffield’s award-winning gym membership scheme this January.

Beat the Christmas bloat!

E

aten too many mince pies this Christmas? Spent too much time on the sofa watching festive TV? Well there’s no better time than January to beat the bloat and make fitness your number one resolution for 2015! So why not shape up and shed that extra winter weight with Sheffield’s most popular health and fitness membership scheme – Fitness Unlimited? Don’t just take our word for it! Fitness Unlimited won no less than four awards at the recent Health Club Awards, which were voted for by our 18,000 members. Membership gets you unlimited access to gym, lane and leisure swimming and spa facilities, plus 350 fitness classes at seven venues across Sheffield. You could try aqua aerobics at Heeley Swimming Pool, a spin class at the English

Institute of Sport Sheffield (EISS) or body combat at Hillsborough Leisure Centre. There’s also Pilates at Springs Leisure Centre, HIIT (high intensive interval training) at Concord Sports Centre and swim fit at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, to name a few. So wherever you work or live, or whatever you enjoy doing, there’s a Fitness Unlimited venue for you. By becoming a member, you can also join in the celebrations for Fitness Unlimited’s 15th birthday! Now one of Sheffield’s biggest sporting success stories, Fitness Unlimited started out back in January 2000 with just three venues, a handful of fitness classes, a health suite and an athletics track. It has gone from strength to strength over the last 15 years, continuing to provide the biggest and best value membership in Sheffield.

Having sold approximately 150,000 memberships since its infancy, it is safe to say that Fitness Unlimited has played a major part in making the people of Sheffield healthier and more active. The scheme is operated by Sheffield City Trust, whose primary role is to benefit the health and wellbeing of the people of Sheffield. Its charitable status means that any surplus income generated is ploughed back into facilities across the city. This has resulted in significant investment across Fitness Unlimited venues over the last 15 years. More recent projects include a significant renovation at EIS Sheffield in 2013, the addition of a new gym at Heeley earlier this year, and a more recent revamp at Concord, which boasts the latest Unity Technology. So, whether you just want to tone up or completely change your fitness regime, Fitness Unlimited’s multi-site membership has you covered. Fitness Unlimited members also benefit from a rewards package, which grants up to 20 per cent discount on selected leisure activities, such as ice skating. You can visit the venues as often as you want and take part in as many classes as you like. With so much on offer, the hardest task will be deciding what activity to take up first. Give Fitness Unlimited a go and see for yourself what it has to offer by visiting www.fitnessunlimited.co.uk. Fitness Unlimited Tel: 0114 223 3419 www.fitnessunlimited.co.uk

The place for fitness After a major revamp and relaunch, Places Gym Health Club has everything you need for a new you.

P

laces Gym Health Club, on Crystal Peaks Retail Park, has been undergoing some exciting changes of late and was relaunched as Places Gym in June 2014. Originally called Sam Jones, the club opened in 2000 and has offered low cost, high quality fitness options to the people of Sheffield for the past 15 years. As well as being rebranded, the gym has also undergone a refurbishment, invested in updated gym equipment and introduced two simplified membership options. The club is run by Places for People Leisure – it is the first Places Gym and the first of many in the UK. The upgrade began at the end of 2013 when the gym invested in £300,000 worth of new, state-of-the-art equipment. The

upgraded club is truly impressive, with a separate indoor cycling room and large dedicated free weight, resistance and cardiovascular workout areas. There is also a flexible functional space upstairs, a V Plate area and two large dance studios. Places Gym has over 40 group exercise classes on offer every week. They include all the regulars you would expect like zumba and aerobics, as well as some exciting new additions like boxercise and FitSteps®, a dance fitness class created by the professionals at BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. New members will complete an induction with a personal trainer before using the equipment and these are booked online as part of the sign up process when joining through the website. And, no matter what time you visit, there are always staff on-hand to help, unlike some other low cost gyms. Continuing their history of offering great value for money, there are new membership packages* in place for both new and existing members of Places Gym. The cheaper option is the gym only membership that allows unlimited access to the gym for £19.99 per month. Or for £34 a month, you can enjoy a full membership, which offers unlimited access to the gym plus all the group exercise classes.

Moving with the times, the recent building works have seen the gym’s reception removed and replaced with state-of-the-art fingerprint recognition entry pods. It’s now more secure and easier than ever to work out whenever you like. Members must first register their fingerprint at the gym during their induction and then they are free to come and go as they please within opening hours. Despite the changes, regular members will be pleased to hear that the Headlines Elite hair salon, Revive beauty studio, and Characters coffee shop have all remained at the new Places Gym and are all open to nonmembers. Visit the new Places Gym website for more information and frequently asked questions, as induction bookings and membership sales are all done online now. Places Gym will be open Monday to Friday 6.30am-10pm and Saturday to Sunday 8am-6pm. The ultimate package With experts in everything from design to hand-built furniture, Arundel Joinery can totally transform your house into the home of your dreams. Words: Fiona Barber

A

s one of Sheffield’s leading joinery manufacturers since 1985, you’ll no doubt have heard of Arundel Joinery. This family-run business has been providing specialist handcrafted windows and doors for over 25 years and it has recently expanded the esteemed brand to include Arundel Interiors and Arundel Decorating. This ultimate trio means they can provide clients with the complete package – from ideas and design, right through to completion of every aspect of your home. Director Danny Broomhead says he decided to launch the additional businesses because of customer demand. “When we were working on properties restoring and fitting windows, we kept getting requests from neighbours for decorating.” Danny set up the decorating business with skilled painter and decorator Lee Bellamy, who had been an employee of Arundel Joinery for two years. He has many acclaimed awards, including Apprentice of the Year, Apprentice Paper Hanger of the Year 2011 and Deluxe National Wall Paper Hanger of the Year. With Lee in charge you can be

safe in the knowledge that your painting and decorating will be completed to a premium standard. To launch Arundel Interiors Danny also teamed up with Chris Headland (formerly Renaissance Joinery), an experienced professional who works from a separate workshop in Dronfield. They specialise in bespoke handmade kitchens and wardrobes, as well as almost everything else indoors. The three professionals, alongside the many talented designers and tradespeople within the company, are now able to provide customers with a complete renovation service. If you employ Arundel to transform your home, a designer will meet with you to

look at previous designs and discuss your ideas and needs. These are then used to create high-quality, handcrafted pieces – exactly to your taste. Arundel Joinery’s dedicated team can recreate existing designs, or offer an alternative solution to suit you and your property. Whether you want them to plot the intricacies of a new staircase, door or window; their design services are offered as a combined extra, so you won’t be surprised by any additional charges. They use traditional materials and tools to deliver high-quality results, and in order to do that, they make sure to only use certified, sustainable suppliers of high-quality soft and hardwoods. As a Yorkshire manufacturer of traditional and heritage products they believe in providing superb design – both technically and aesthetically – exceptional quality, which is precision built. Not only do they focus on great quality, but Arundel Joinery have an eye on the environment too. All of their timber is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved and their suppliers are members of the Timber Trade Federation. This means that all of their wood comes straight from a certified forest and the supply chain has not been broken. Some timber may need to be supplied from forests outside of the UK, and they ensure that they choose suppliers to supply wood from certified and legal managed forests. Also if you have uPVC windows and doors, they will dispose of your old ones in a licensed site. While Arundel Joinery take on many domestic projects, they also specialise in restorations of listed buildings. The most

recent venture was a renovation of Beauchief Hall. This included replacing 70 windows to look exactly as they did 250 years ago – keeping the same detail but improving the quality with new technology. It is one of the biggest projects they have worked on and took 16 weeks to complete. Although Arundel Joinery is a Sheffieldbased company, their specialist work has become so well-know they get offered contracts in London too. Danny says: “The businesses in London doing what we do charge a fortune and those that are cheaper don’t offer the quality we do.” Most recently they have been awarded contract work in Whitechapel in London, which is the gateway into the City of London from Canary Wharf. This will be the biggest regeneration project in the centre of London since the Olympics. Despite demand elsewhere, their roots are still very much in Sheffield and their primary focus remains simple – to provide bespoke products and a fantastic service. BEAT THE BLUES Don’t let the Christmas hangover get you down. Banish the January clouds with our guide to a cheerful New Year.

I

n 2005, psychologist Cliff Arnall claimed that bad weather, debt and the time lapsed since Christmas – plus the usual back-to-work blues – culminated in the third Monday of January being the most depressing day of the year. Of course, there is absolutely no scientific evidence to support this theory and, though Cliff was named as the author of the report, it was actually a Sky Travel publicity campaign. There’s nothing like a

touch of mythical misery to make people book holidays, eh? The fact remains, however, that January is a glum month. While it’s easy to dispel a myth that claims a certain day is worse than the rest, the post-Christmas blues are hard to shake off completely. This year, don’t fall victim to the trend. We’ve rounded up a few tips to help you start 2015 as you mean to go on – happy and full of energy. So forget the January blues, here’s to the January grooves! (Oh come on, it nearly works…)

WORDS: Stephanie Burns

BORROW A DOG Spending quality time with playful pooches is proven to lift the spirits – and those without a pet of their own need no longer miss out. National initiatives ‘Borrow My Doggy’ has been bringing dog lovers and dog owners together since 2012. Those not able to keep a dog can borrow someone else’s – taking it for walks, feeding it and generally having a lovely time – meaning the dog is happier and the owner needn’t feel guilty about not being able to keep it company throughout the day. It’s a win-win situation. For more information and to get matched with members in your local area, visit www.borrowmydoggy.com.

PRACTICE MINDFULNESS A buzzword in mental wellbeing, mindfulness is currently being touted as the best antidote to a stressful lifestyle. It’s about appreciating the ‘now’ and being present in the moment by being aware of how you think, feel and act. For example, next time you wash your hands, pay attention to the sound of the tap running, how the water feels on your hands and the scent of the soap – it sounds odd but it can really help to refocus your mind. For a more in-depth practice, a four-week online course by The Mental Health Foundation (www.bemindfulonline.com) costs £60 and ‘involves paying attention to our thoughts and feelings in a way that increases our ability to manage difficult situations and make wise choices’.

SOCIALISE The best way to nurture a bad mood is doing nothing – or checking social media and seeing others having a better time. But, as post-festive bank accounts are notoriously a little peaky – to put it lightly – lavish nights out and weekends away are often last on the agenda. Does that mean you can’t still see friends and enjoy perhaps a more modest activity? Of course not. Grab the last of your Christmas chocolates, a bottle of wine and gather some friends for a night in playing board games or watching a DVD. Granted, it’s not the most glamorous way to spend a Saturday night but it’s fun and it’s free and, at this time of year, you can’t really ask for much more.

If this sounds like the very last activity that would raise your spirits, don’t be a martyr. Let your family/partner/friends go without you, enjoy a couple of hours alone, and avoid the stroppy teenager routine. For the many others who love nothing more than a bargain, however, this is the brightest ray of sunshine on an otherwise dull horizon. And don’t forget, shopping can also be included in your new year exercise regime as two-and-a-half hours of dashing round the shops will burn around 385 calories. As if you really needed an excuse…

AND FINALLY… FORGET THE RESOLUTIONS

The Burns Night app (left) and a traditional Burns Night supper (above)

CELEBRATE BURNS NIGHT This often-overlooked Scottish tradition, which takes place on 25 January and celebrates the life and work of poet Robert Burns, is what winters are made of. Comforting food, warming spirits and sharing the experience with friends and family – what better way to spice up the end of a dreary month? There’s even, would you believe, a Robert Burns app available for iPhone and Android. On it you’ll find more than 550 poems and love songs; a useful guide to hosting your Burns supper including recipes, what to drink and what to wear, and a biography detailing just what makes this eminent bard one of history’s greats.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Be honest, when have you ever stuck to one longer than a couple of weeks? If you are looking to lose weight, get fit or quit smoking, start right now. It sounds obvious but there is nothing stopping you making the changes you need to make, besides yourself. Putting it off until a certain date or not trying at all because it’s now the 10th of the month and you planned to start on the 5th makes the whole process seem like more of a big deal than it really is and will set you up to fail. Instead, run up and down the stairs a few times right now, cook a healthier tea tonight or have one less cigarette today. By gradually building up to the full gym membership or strict health plan, you’re more likely to achieve the results you want. Finally, don’t beat yourself up if you don’t stick to your original plan as it will only make you feel worse.

A weekend to remember Radio 1 superstar DJ Annie Mac presents Lost & Found Festival in Malta for 2015.

alta will welcome electronic music DJ Annie Mac at her first-ever curated festival on Easter Bank Holiday, 3-5 April 2015. Situated on the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, the dance music event will showcase a line-up of DJs and feature beach parties and night raves. The BBC Radio 1 DJ rose to fame in 2004 when she launched her now popular show. Annie’s stentorian voice is highly-respected in the world of bleeps, basslines and cowbells, and 2009 saw her pick up ‘Best Female DJ’ prize at the Drum & Bass Awards. Lost & Found continues Malta’s increasing appeal to a young and trendy festival-loving crowd. Isle of MTV’s inception in 2007 initially brought the big names to the small island. Previous A-listers include Lady Gaga, Snoop Dogg and David Guetta, firmly placing Malta on the map of popular music. Lost & Found’s starstudded line-up of DJs and artists is no exception to this youthful momentum, with Carl Craig, Duke Dumont, Eats Everything and Kaytrananda all featuring as headliners. Annie Mac says: “ After visiting the island it was unequivocal it should be the home of our AMP festival; it’s extremely beautiful and the people there are so warm and welcoming. It’s going to be a very special weekend.” Across eight core venues, ticket-holders are treated to “a multitude of daytime pool parties and night time open air raves.” These are but a stone’s throw from each other and conveniently located close to Malta’s most popular hotels. Lost & Found’s website also promises “something very special on the last day”. For more information, including ticket availability plus a full line-up, visit www.lostandfoundfestival.co.uk

Reasons to explore

O

ften overlooked by tourists, the village of Stoney Middleton in the Peak District’s Hope Valley has become less known for its wealth of historical heritage and picturesque beauty and more as a shortcut for those commuting to Manchester. But if you take a stroll down to The Nook, just off the main road, you’ll discover many reasons to explore the beautiful surroundings. Village pump

Nestled in the valley of the village, the Stoney Middleton Roman baths are housed in a Grade II listed building, with a history that dates back to ancient times. Although there is no solid evidence to prove that it was the Romans who uncovered this natural spring or even built the baths, Roman coins have been found locally, which suggests they made offerings at the dazzling discovery. Roman soldiers also had a fort at Navio nearby, so it is widely believed that they would have left the military fort to unwind in the spring’s relaxing setting and take advantage of its ‘healing properties’. SS Music

Adam’s got it covered Anything you want, you got it with Trasklive’s live jukebox full of great music for every occasion.

T

he music industry can be a turbulent world. With so many artists desperate to survive making a living doing something they love, there is immense pressure to keep audiences captivated. While some re-invent their appearance or musical style to keep things fresh, others search for innovative ways to strive for success. Adam McCulloch did just that when he launched a project called Trasklive in 2013. Trasklive gives clients the variety and choice of a musical covers service – from solo and duos, to a full band of talented and versatile performers. He tells FIONA BARBER about musical inspirations, strutting his stuff as Liam Gallagher and unusual song requests…

SOUTHSIDE 44

What is your earliest memory of music? “Probably listening to The Beatles with my dad – Abbey Road stands out. I think my first gig was Steps though, so it wasn’t all plain sailing!’ What was the first instrument you learned? “I started on the piano and would just sit for hours learning Beatles songs. The Beatles’ back catalogue is the best education. When it comes to taking requests and figuring out a song on the spot, you have all the training from those guys.” Why did you choose music as a career? “I would have been a footballer but sadly my career was cut short by my total lack of ability. A lot of my family comes from Liverpool and my uncles both still tour, so

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

044 - 045 SSide Jan15_Layout 1 16/12/2014 15:34 Page 2

music was always around me. Strutting around and pretending to be Liam Gallagher was probably my earliest foray into performance.” How did you progress into a career in music? “I started to sing at school, played in local bands and wrote originals. Then I moved to Leeds to study English Literature and spent some time travelling around America. The quality of live music is so high there; I think it spurred me into action. “I carried on writing my own music but it is only the past year or so that I have focused on live performance and building a business. It is a lot of work, but it is the best kind of work. “This definitely feels like my first full year of music; before now it was a fun pastime and more about songwriting. Now I am full time I can really get my teeth stuck into work.” Which musicians inspire you? “There is obviously a big Beatles influence. In terms of contemporary artists, I love Gregory Alan Isakov and Sufjan Stevens. I do enjoy a good pop song though; I’m never afraid to play some S Club 7.”

How did you meet band members Dan Wilson and Dave Turner? “I went to school with Dan Wilson and he played drums in our very first band. He is a fantastic and versatile musician – he can sing, play guitar and of course, the drums and percussion. I met Dave Turner through a previous job three years ago and he is a brilliant guitarist. I also sing in a duo with Ellis Cox, who is a fantastic vocalist in her own right.”

How do you start with learning a new track? “I usually sit at the piano and piece together an arrangement. I like to put my own twist onto certain songs. I utilise an iPad now and it has been a lifesaver for words and requests taken.”

What made you transition from being a solo artist to starting up Trask? “I felt there was a gap in the market for what I was offering at live performances: a widerange of covers and the ability to take requests. I saw bands playing the same old songs and felt that if I could offer a personalised, unique set then I would corner a niche. Using other musicians has been a natural step as I increase the variety of events I cover, and I’m lucky enough to know the best.”

What’s the strangest request you’ve ever had? “I had a big group of Swiss tourists asking for all kinds of songs in Liverpool. They wanted What’s Up? by Four Non Blondes. Let It Go is always requested if a party has children there. The dads seem to know all the words though!”

Had you performed with other artists previously? “I work with other session bands at times, particularly with my uncle. He has an established music business and it helps to have somebody else in the family working in the field. Many would not support music as a career but my family have been great. I have a number of collaborations, both in writing and performance lined up for 2015, so keep your eyes peeled!” What are the pros and cons of playing solo/as a duo/in a band? “It is fun having other musicians playing with you.You can try new things, and it allows me to introduce other instruments besides the acoustic guitar. I played piano for a private function in November with the band and it sounded great. Gold by Spandau Ballet went down well! Of course, playing solo tends to be quicker to prepare. But whatever the setup, playing live is always a pleasure.”

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

What type of music do you enjoy playing most? “The great thing about catering for private events is the variety of tastes. Certain songs are always popular. I think I’ve played Pharrell Williams’ Happy about a thousand times in the last year! Upbeat pop is always fun to play. Don’t You Want Me by The Human League has probably been my favourite cover of the year.”

What is the most memorable event that you’ve played? “I have been lucky enough to play some fantastic venues – as a band we played a gorgeous wedding in West Yorkshire in a rather glamorous yurt! There are some fantastic local venues for events too – Casa, The Fox and Goose and the Chesterfield Arms to name a few. “

‘This definitely feels like my first full year of music; before now it was a fun pastime and more about songwriting. Now I am full time I can really get my teeth stuck into work.’

Adam is currently taking bookings for weddings and private functions for 2015 so make sure to contact him in advance. You can find Trask on a number of leading events sites such as Warble and Live Music Management, but you can book directly at www.trasklive.com. Stockings for heroes is one of the many fundraising ideas for the charity and Ashdell wanted to help fill a stocking. Two very large Christmas stockings were hung in the school hall and the Head Girl Ella Roberts (Y6) and Safi Ismail (Y3) hand over the stockings girls have been very busy filling them over the last couple of weeks. SS Motoring

Honda’s dream machine The inspiration behind every teenage boy’s dream returns – the Honda Civic Type-R. Landing around May, it’ll be the most extreme Type-R ever made, producing at least 276 horses from a 2.0-litre i-VTEC turbocharged engine (the first Type-R to incorporate a turbocharged engine). Honda wants this turbo engine to not only attain the ‘high-revving’ characteristics of the much-loved VTEC engines of old, but combine it with real-world demolishing low-end torque. Honda’s targeting the frontwheel-drive Nürburgring record and by the looks of it, it’ll be pretty damn close. Expect a price of around £30,000. Looks to be a cracker.

Viva Vauxhall The Vauxhall Viva is back. Though in this case, it’s in a tidy, compact supermini flavour. Launching in the spring, it’ll come with the same 74bhp 1.0litre three-cylinder unit found in both the Adam and Corsa, and it’ll be mated with a five-speed manual. The chassis has been designed to “provide exceptional safety and class-leading comfort” and it’ll incorporate typical Vauxhall design cues including their ‘blade’ side design and winged chrome bar up front. It’ll be crammed with tech including Apple and Android synching capabilities, ESP, ABS, hill start assist and park assist. Prices are yet to be announced.

Jordan Cutforth takes a look at what 2015 has in store for motorists.

New Disco ticks all the boxes As from January, the Land Rover Discovery Sport will be the new weapon of choice for every family undertaking the daily school run – the combination of the badge, the practicality, the economical engines and the build quality will see to that. You maybe thinking: “the Range Rover Evoque sees to that, right?” Wrong. You see, the Evoque doesn’t have seven-seats (unlike the Discovery Sport) and although the Evoque’s interior feels classier, this means you’ll not be worried about your kids smearing it with their muddy shoes or jammy dodgers. Available in two or 4WD variants. Prices start from £32,395.

Alfa has a platform to build on Alfa Romeo hasn’t had a slice of the compact executive saloon market since the 159 discontinued in 2012. They’re planning on taking some of it back with this, the Alfa Romeo Giulia. Expected to go on sale at the end of the year, the Giulia will be rear-driven and will incorporate a number of four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. This will be an important car for the company as its platform and array of engines will be rolled out into future Alfa models within the next five years. No pressure then.

B-Class leads the charge Starting from £31,950 (excluding government grants), the Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive will be the company’s first crack at a full volume electric car when it goes on sale early in the year. Mercedes state it’ll achieve 142 miles on a single charge from its lithium-ion batteries, which produce 180bhp and 340NM of torque, carving a 7.9 second 0-62mph time. Mercedes say these figures make it the most powerful, fastest accelerating five-seat electric car in its class boasting the greatest theoretical range. Practicality is great with a 510-litre boot, rising to 1,456 litres with rear seats folded.

SS Chesterfield Champions

Happy New Year to all readers! From Peter Swallow, Chair, Destination Chesterfield.

N

ow we’re in the new year, it’s easy to get excited as we have so much to look forward to as a town in 2015. However, I think it’s important to remember all that has been achieved in 2014, so allow me to give you all a quick reminder… I hope that you will be impressed! Amongst many things this year, we’ve seen the installation of the new ‘Growth’ sculpture on Hornsbridge Roundabout which enhances one of our key gateways and best of all did not cost our town a penny as it was kindly funded by Barratt Homes. We also had the great news in February that University of Derby will soon be establishing a campus here in Chesterfield. This opens up so many opportunities to young people in the town and surrounding areas. In April, work started on the first homes at the much anticipated Chesterfield Waterside project and we’ll be welcoming first residents in 2015. As one of the largest regeneration schemes in the country, this first stage means everything for Chesterfield.

The town’s first ever Retail Awards were held in June celebrating and recognising our thriving retail scene. The awards recognise Chesterfield’s talent in the retail sector and shows why we still have one of the best town centre shop occupancy rates in the country. October saw a celebration of our town’s talent in the food and drink industry at the Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards 2014, which was double the size of last year’s ceremony. TV chef Ainsley Harriott was once again a hit as our host for the evening. There must be few people in Chesterfield without a selfie with him on their phone! More recently, Chesterfield’s St Mary’s High School was recognised as one of the top comprehensives in the UK in The Sunday Times, and the town’s first manufacturing festival was hailed a success. The Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield unveiled the new sculpture outside Chesterfield Coach Station, another key gateway, to kick off the Made in Chesterfield Week (10-14 November). The sculpture, kindly donated by Franke Sissons, is a shining example of what can be achieved when young people, apprentices, and businesses work together.

The festival highlighted the thriving manufacturing and engineering sector and the many companies based here in our town who not only operate nationally but internationally. Most importantly the events throughout the week highlighted a career option to many youngsters who may not have considered it, proving there is so much opportunity, ability and passion right here in Chesterfield. With all that and more, what a successful year 2014 was – we’re certainly off to a head start for a good 2015! I hope you will join me in celebrating and recognising our achievements properly on 25 March at the Celebrate Chesterfield 2015 event.
