Whether that means entertaining in our gardens, heading out for a picnic or drinking and dining at one of our region’s splendid venues (now restrictions are easing) - the choice is yours.

At home, once you’re all set up outside - tables, chairs, parasol, mood-enhancing music - you’ll need to decide what to eat and for that we have plenty of inspiration. If you’re preparing the food yourself, over the coming pages we have some tasty spring/summer recipe ideas, which can be made with delicious ingredients from local suppliers including Whites of Calver.

You’ll find an extremely well-stocked Spar store at Whites of Calver which also includes an on-site butchers and delicatessen supplied by nearby Fischers & Co. More of a farm shop, much of its produce is sourced from local farm shops including New Close Farm Shop, Smyllies of Bakewell, Peak District Dairy, local Derbyshire wine merchants John Hattersley Wines, and local brewery Peak Ales. In short, everything you need for a slap-up outdoor feast. Attached is the Insomnia Cafe with coffee, cakes and lots of outside space.

If you like the idea of staying at home but can’t bring yourself to do the cooking (or the washing up), you could always order the food in. The Greedy Greek Deli has been a part of Sharrow Vale Road for over 15 years and is perfect for a seasonal alfresco meal. They cater for any size party and even attend outside events with their mobile unit.

After months of being at home, staying there might be the last thing you want to do so the appeal of eating out, literally, at a pub, restaurant or cafe may hold sway.

With venues able to serve drinks and food from 12 April, now is the perfect time to revisit some of your favourite spots, especially if the sun’s shining.

• 1 tbsp red wine vinegar • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 2 tsp oregano Method 1. In a small bowl, mix together the relish ingredients and season with salt and pepper.

2. Slice the top 4cm off the top of the loaf. Scoop out most of the inside, leaving 4cm at the bottom. Layer the ingredients inside the loaf, starting with the roasted peppers, then halve the relish, the red onion, remaining relish, mozzarella, salami, pepperoni and rocket. Put the top back on and wrap very tightly in plastic wrap.

3. Put the loaf on a tray topped with another tray. Weigh it down with something heavy, such as a cast-iron frying pan.

4. To serve, unwrap and cut into slices.

Spicy cauliflower and bean tacos with pickled red onions Serves 4 Prepare 30 minutes Cook 25 minutes Ingredients • 1 small head cauliflower, cut into small florets • 3 tbsp vegetable oil • 4 tsp smoked paprika • 4 tsp ground cumin • 2 cloves garlic, chopped • 2 cans borlotti beans • 1 tbsp honey • 3 tbsp cider vinegar For the pickled red onions • 150ml red wine vinegar • 1 tbsp salt • 1 tbsp caster sugar • 2 medium red onions, sliced into half moons To serve • Warm corn or flour tortillas • Fresh coriander • Sliced green chillies • Chipotle hot sauce Method 1. Preheat the oven to 220˚C, gas mark 7. To make the pickled red onions, heat the red wine vinegar in a small saucepan with 50ml water, the salt and sugar. Bring to the boil, then take off the heat. Add the onions and leave to cool to room temperature.

2. Put the cauliflower on a baking tray.

Drizzle with 1 tbsp oil, sprinkle with 2 tsp each smoked paprika and cumin, and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 15-20 minutes until charred.

Remove and set aside.

3. Meanwhile, in a large frying pan, heat the remaining 2 tbsp oil and the garlic. Sauté over a medium heat for 23 minutes until golden. Add the beans, remaining 2 tsp each smoked paprika and cumin, honey and cider vinegar; season with salt and pepper. Cook for another 5 minutes, then remove from heat.

4. When ready to eat, warm the tortillas and serve with bowls of the beans, pickled onions, coriander, chillies and hot sauce for people to help themselves.

Tomato tart with feta Serves 4 Prepare 30 minutes Cook 35 minutes Ingredients • 300g cherry tomatoes, halved • 1 medium red onion, thickly sliced • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 325g all-butter pre-rolled puff pastry • 150g cream cheese • 1 clove garlic, crushed • 2 egg yolks • 20g chives, finely chopped • 100g feta cheese, crumbled • 20g fresh basil Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180˚C, gas mark 4. Put the tomatoes and onion on a

baking tray, drizzle with the vinegar and olive oil, and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 15 minutes, then remove. Turn the heat up to 210˚C, gas mark 7.

2. Unwrap the pastry and slice into 4 rectangles. Use a knife to lightly score a 2cm border on each piece. Put on a tray and freeze while you prepare the remaining ingredients.

3. In a small bowl, mix together the cream cheese, garlic, 1 egg yolk and 2 tbsp chives; season with salt and pepper.

4. Put the pastry on a baking tray and bake for 8 minutes. Remove and spread with the cream cheese mixture. Top with the tomatoes, onion and feta. Brush the outer edges with the remaining egg yolk. Bake for another 10 minutes, then remove. Top with the remaining chives and fresh basil to serve.

Greedy Greek The Greedy Greek Deli has been a part of Sharrow Vale Road for over 15 years and has continued to grow and evolve into more than just a deli.

Today’s business consists of a small production kitchen near Chesterfield where their Greek chefs make delicious food.

Have you been inspired to turn to a plant-based diet or just cut down on the amount of meat you eat? Maybe you’ve cut back on alcohol or tried to increase the amount of fruit and vegetables in your diet.Whatever your choices – and reasons – there’s one unifying theme and that’s taking positive steps to improve your health and wellbeing.

As we move into spring there’s no better time to take those positive steps even further by giving yourself a dose of goodness in the form of juicing.

Juicing is a process that extracts the juices from fresh fruits and vegetables, usually stripping away most of the solid matter, including the seeds and pulp, from whole fruits and vegetables. This results in a liquid that contains most of the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants naturally present in the whole fruit or vegetable.

Juicing is sometimes done to detox but can supplement your current diet.

The nutritional quality of juice obtained from both types of juicers is similar.

RECIPES: Carrot, Apple & Ginger 8 Medium Carrots 2 Apples (Coxes, Royal Gala or Braeburn) Slice of root Ginger (to taste) Carrot, Apple & Ginger makes a delicious starting point for those who have never tried vegetable juices. It has superb nutritional qualities: carrots are a good source of Vitamin A and Beta Carotenes, providing anti-ageing and cancer-fighting antioxidants. Apples have an abundance of pectin which forms a gel that breaks down toxins in the intestines and helps maintain a healthy bowel function. Ginger is an excellent tonic for the entire digestive system. In fact, Carrot & Apple is a staple drink of the Gerson Institute of Cancer Therapy.

This drink can be easily made with any fruit & vegetable juicer. Carrots need to form the majority of the juice otherwise the flavour of the apples will dominate.

introduction to wheatgrass and may be preferable for those who aren’t too keen on the intensity of straight wheatgrass juice. Simply juice the wheatgrass in the appropriate juicer followed by the remaining ingredients. ***

Pineapple, Mango, Apple, Lime & Ginger Smoothie 4 Rings of Fresh Pineapple 1 Mango 5 Apples 1 Lime Slice of Ginger (to taste) 4 Healthy Dollops of Fresh Yoghurt The combination of pineapple, mango, lime, ginger and yoghurt has to be tasted to be believed: it’s rather special. Even more so if you’re lucky enough to find a supply of Indian or Pakistani mangoes.

This drink serves serves. Prepare and freeze the mango and pineapple. Add to a blender followed by the juiced apples, lime and ginger. Finally, add the yoghurt, blend well and serve immediately.

alking has become an increasing, and enjoyable, part of our lives over the last year or so. As restrictions continue to ease and we can now venture further afield, a trip out into Derbyshire this spring can hold a certain sense of wonder.

If you head off the well-trodden track you can be rewarded with grand gardens and more at Thornbridge Hall, a delightfully different 12th century stately home that lies on the outskirts of Ashford-in-the-Water.

After being closed for almost two years, the gardens are now open to visitors along with a plant nursery and the Carriage House Café, which fully reopened on Monday 12 April. They are open seven days per week from 10am4pm. The cost of entry to the 12-acre gardens will be £7 per adult with no charge for children.

A lockdown silver lining has been the time it has afforded the owners of Thornbridge Hall to work on the house and gardens. The breathing space has allowed them to make a number of tweaks to the already beautiful 100-acre plus property.

This includes fully restoring the previously buried Clumber Quadrafoil fountain in the Italian Garden. An impressive sight at 20m across, the fountain is now home to hundreds of yellow bath ducks. Squeals of delight can be heard for miles around as children catch them with the provided nets and throw them back in again.

“There has been just the one meanie who made a comment on our Facebook page about them being a bit naff,” laughs Emma Harrison, who has owned Thornbridge Hall with husband, Jim Harrison, since 2002. “But I’m happy to be part of Club Naff, if that’s what they are. The smiles and laughter have brought the place to life. We are even building a beach in time for summer, I’ve already bought the buckets and spades!”

Work is also well underway on The Potting Shed, a brand-new glass fronted café that will serve delicious home cooked dishes – such as doorstop sandwiches using freshly baked bread, huge, fresh salads and flavour-packed soups – using garden sourced and estate raised ingredients. There will also be cakes from The Bakehouse and beer on tap from Thornbridge Brewery. Access will be directly from the Monsal Trail, as well as via the property’s main entrance, providing a welcome sanctum for walkers and cyclists. >>>

The plant nursery is also enjoying a makeover, and The Bakehouse is being expanded as well.

The plan is to offer an extensive range of experiences, meaning a trip to Thornbridge should appeal to anyone and everyone, whatever their interests.

Guided nature walks – allowing visitors to take in the diverse, often rare local wildlife – sculpture trails and photography courses, are all in the pipelines. Wood carving, glass blowing, kiln making, forging, floristry school, pick your own flowers and pottery are also on Emma’s wish-list.

“We have honestly worked harder than ever before during lockdown,” smiles Emma. “Usually, we would be travelling a lot, working on our various businesses but the restrictions meant we had to ease up on that side of our lives.

It gave us the opportunity to step back and really absorb and enjoy our family home. We realised that we had to share it with other people again. It’s too special to keep behind closed gates.”

Emma first visited Thornbridge Hall with her youth/social worker, the indomitable Donna Jones MBE when Sheffield City Council ran it as a residential conference centre. She fell in love with the gothic mansion immediately and vowed to buy it one day. Emma and Jim fulfilled that dream

20-years ago and set about restoring the property, that had fallen into some disrepair. It has been a labour of love and a project that the couple are understandably very proud of.

Thornbridge Hall is surrounded by 4.8 ha (12a) of quintessentially English gardens, set in the heart of the Peak District National Park. The gardens were designed at the end of the 19th century to create a vision of ‘1,000 shades of green,’ which the owner wanted to be able to see from his bedroom window.

They are a perfect example of Victorian drive, determination and engineering to manipulate the landscape into a series of

garden rooms.

The gardens first opened to the public in the 1930s and there are many distinct areas including the Italian Garden, 30m (100ft) Herbaceous Border, Water Garden and Koi Lake, as well as terraced lawns overlooking the beautiful Derbyshire countryside.

Visitors will also come across three temples, numerous statues, 46 urns and two grottos, all of which were incorporated into the garden in the 1890s. Some of the statuary came from Clumber Park and Chatsworth, while some were gifts from the Greek Government.

The current ownership has seen the development of the Kitchen Garden, Scented Terrace, Long Border, Modern Knot Garden, Orangery and Greenhouse.

The Carriage House Café will be serving freshly ground coffee and other drinks, alongside their famous sausage rolls (Plain, Jaipur or Stilton - using pork raised on the estate), cakes and slices made by The Bakehouse. Based at Thornbridge, this fast-growing business is run by talented baker, Eleanor Rastrick.

Let’s hope so, because time is one of the most influential factors in determining the value of that gleaming hunk of metal and jewels you’re so proudly wearing. After a few years have elapsed, it’ll still be telling the hours, but it will eventually become a vintage watch, pursued by collectors all over the world.

But before pound signs dance merrily away in your visual field, sorry, we’re going to have to break it gently… the battered Timex you received as a 16th birthday present is not currently at the top of the list of targets sought after by aficionados.

We are talking about watches that have that vital ingredient – the prestige that derives from the maker’s name. And they do not come any grander than Patek Philippe. By general consent, they are at the very top of the tree. With a few arguable exceptions, the rest of the famous names belong in the chasing pack.

So what is it about this particular maker that prompts someone to spend a small fortune for the reassurance of seeing the name emblazoned on the dial every time you glance at it?

A Derbyshire businessman has two Patek Philippes. One of them, bought for £21,000 a few

years back would now fetch nearer £55,000.

But it isn’t the monetary value that drives his passion for collecting.

“They are certainly not just bling,” he says. “Right from being a young boy interested in engineering, I understood how gearing works. And some of the top watches are remarkable pieces of engineering.

“For instance, a watch might have 24 rubies in its movement.

They are not there just for decoration. They are an integral part of the working mechanism.

And rubies cost money, hence the prices of the finished article.”

But even Patek Philippe can’t claim the same rarity value that surrounds the creations of another maker much beloved by formula one racing drivers.

That maker is Frank Mille, who produces timepieces in absurdly small quantities.

“It is literally a case of one guy sitting on a Swiss mountainside making watches.

Because of the rarity, they can change hands for up to £250,000.”

But even that staggering sum pales into insignificance when the other vital factor is taken, that of provenance. To you or me that means who had the watch previously. If it was someone famous, the difference in value

Ian Cookson of PA Jewellery in Sheffield is something of an authority on watches, but even he was stunned when Steve McQueen’s old one went under the hammer recently.

“It set a new record price of $17million at auction. The price was driven by the provenance – a watch of the same specification without that link would be worth $150,000,” said Ian. Back in the realms of real life, there are numerous makers which are highly desirable and accessible to those who are looking for an investment which can be used and enjoyed every day.

But the first problem that could confront a would-be collector is actually getting hold of some of the more soughtafter examples.

In many cases, it’s impossible to go down the retail route.

Potential customers are invited to buy new watches, and that invitation is hard to come by.

The greater the maker’s repute, the harder it will be to get hold of one.

The thinking behind this is to reduce the chances of a secondary market emerging due to buyers looking to make a quick profit by selling on. That means existing customers get first choice when a new model comes along and you may face a long wait for one to appear on the market.

Ian cites the example of a Rolex Submariner commissioned by the armed

forces in the 1970s. Only 2,000 were made and many of these have suffered irreparable damage or loss in the years since, increasing their rarity value. One example, compete with military markings, was sold by Ian for £11,000 – a far cry from the £162,000 which another with only slight cosmetic and detail differences fetched as collectors got the scent.

Rolex, especially the gold variety, were once the embodiment of eighties flash cash. These days, the brand is second only to Patek Philippe.

Omega were once held to be some way behind but with increasing interest in vintage watches, they have been catching up with Rolex in some instances.

In turn, the ground vacated by Omega has benefitted the likes of Longines.

If you’re still worried by what your watch says about you, don’t be.

As Ian says, the trend is towards refinements in production rather than ostentation. “You wouldn’t give some of them a second glance. If anything, they are remarkably understated.”

What to do after lockdown? As restrictions start to ease, we look at things to do and places to visit, from cinemas to theatres and more.

he last year has been hard for every one of us.We have had to adapt to this new way of life.The endless lockdowns, the new ways of working from home, kids being off school, not being able to see any friends or family and limited social contact with anyone. It has been a little hard. However, it seems things are looking up and there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has released a roadmap of what will be opening up on no earlier than 17 May and the summer months.These things include restrictions on meeting people

outdoors being lifted, however, meeting groups over 30 people will still be illegal.

Most businesses will reopen, indoor entertainment and attractions; cinemas, play areas and more. Hospitality sectors like pubs will be invite customers indoors and no substantial meal will be required with drinks, but it has to be table service.

Hotels and B&Bs will open up and allowed to go ahead are group sport and exercises classes. Performances will also be allowed to go ahead with indoor events holding up to 1,000 people or half full (whichever is the lower number).

Outdoor events will hold up to 4,000 or

half full and outdoor seated venues can hold 10,000 or quarter full. Up to 30 people can now attend weddings, receptions, wakes and funerals.

Following on into the summer months, from 21 June there will be no legal limits on social distancing and life events. Also, nightclubs will reopen, and they will be easing restrictions on larger events.

We can soon get life back to normal and start to look forward to things again!

It seems as though being able to have a meal with your friends, going to a music event, going to see the newly released film in the cinema is nearly in our reach.

Music Live music has been a big miss for many but, fingers crossed, performances should be able to resume inside and out from 17 May onwards. Many venues still seem to be airing on the side of caution with gigs pencilled in for later in the year rather than straight away, although no doubt this will change in the coming weeks and months.

At Chesterfield’s Winding Wheel you can catch Status Quo’s Francis Rossi (30 July) whilst across in Sheffield there are re-arranged gigs for from JLS (28-29 October), Steps (2 November) and Gary Barlow (2 December).

The potential for festivals taking place over the summer months is still up for debate. Derbyshire’s Y Not Festival (30 July-1 August) have yet to confirm or cancel at the time of writing. The coming weeks and months will reveal much more but if the events are cancelled, any ticket purchases will be rolled over to next year.

In Sheffield, at the Arena you will be able to catch re-arranged performances from the likes of JLS (28-29 October), Steps (2 November) and Gary Barlow (2 December). In the city centre you can catch Tom Grennan (19 September), Declan McKenna (21 September) and Sheffield’s own Heaven 17 (13 November) at the O2 Academy, and Patawawa (12 June), Levellers (25 June) and You Me at Six (10 July) at The Leadmill.

Arts & Culture Museums, galleries and exhibition centres will be welcoming visitors once again and will need your support.

Cinema Movie theatres are set to re-open, at the earliest, on 17 May and with many of last year’s blockbuster film releases put on hold, this summer should see a tidal wave of new movies hitting the big screen.

Marvel’s first cinematic release for almost two years, Black Widow, should finally get it’s release on 9 July and will be followed by Shang Chi and the Ten Rings (3 September). Disney’s offerings come in the form of Cruella (28 May), a live action prequel to 101 Dalmatians, and Luca (18 June), a Disney-Pixar animated adventure set on the Italian Riviera that sees an unlikely but strong friendship grow between a human being and a sea monster disguised as a human.

Furious franchise - number 9 is set to be released on 9 July - whilst Tom Cruise returns to the cockpit for the longawaited sequel to Top Gun - Maverick (23 July).

If you’re looking for a good family film, Space Jam: A New Legacy (23 July) should tick all the boxes. There’s no Michael Jordan this time but LA Lakers star LeBron James will be joining Bugs Bunny and the Looney Toons for more basketball-fuelled adventures.

Finally, musical lovers can marvel at In The Heights (18 June), a feature version of the Broadway musical in which a bodega owner has mixed feelings about closing his store and retiring to the Dominican Republic are inheriting his grandmother’s fortune.

Comedy Let’s be honest, we could all do with a laugh after the last 12 months. I’m sure there are many gigs to be confirmed - and many more still to move - but for starters you can catch Jack Dee at Buxton Opera House (14 May TBC). “In these difficult and uncertain times people need hope – a ray of sunshine to brighten their day. And that’s very much where I come in” says Jack. Across at Chesterfield’s Winding Wheel you can see Jason Manford (28 August).

Theatre Like cinemas, Derbyshire’s theatres will hope to have audiences back from 17 May. Chesterfield’s Winding Wheel and Pomegranate Theatre are taking a positive stance and have shows lined up for summer, including Zog (23-24 June), The Haunting of Blaine Manor (9-

10 July) and Beyond the Barricade (17 July).

Buxton Opera House will be showing Crooners (29 August), a rip-roaring new comedy music show that has been wowing audiences, witty and exhilarating it is full of hilarious one liners, laugh out loud silliness and

superb musical numbers with the outstanding nine-piece The Mini Big Band live on stage.

Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage (31 August-4 September) is also back, exploding with heart-pounding music, breathtaking emotion and sensationally sexy dancing.

It’s time to head for the greens and tee off as St Luke’s Hospice gets back on the fairway for its 2021 Golf Day. The popular sporting challenge will be back at Abbeydale Golf Club on Friday 11 June sponsored by Sheffield data protection specialists Bruce and Butler.

Open to teams of four players – from scratch to 24 handicap golfers – the day costs £275 and includes dinner and prizes for team and individual competitions.

An online community, set up to help business owners in the East Midlands to connect and support one another through the challenges of lockdown, is celebrating its first birthday.

Communicate with Purpose is the brainchild of High Peak communications consultant, Lucy Rennie. It was set up as a supportive space where business owners across the county can share ideas and lessons learned with other small business owners and managers.

Since its inception in March last year at the beginning of lockdown, the community has grown from an early membership of 20 to some 130 business owners, with that figure rising each week and now attracting members from across the UK. As well as providing members with the opportunity to collaborate with others in the group, it opens doors to other areas of the UK that weren’t previously on members’ radars.
